During the February Board of Directors meeting for the Paris-Henry County Chamber of Commerce, the Vice President of Tourism Michael Trolinger announced the lineup for the 2022 Tennessee River Jam set for June 16-19.

Thirty-five artists will perform over the four days at nine venues throughout Henry County. Those artists include; Big & Rich with Cowboy Troy, The Marshall Tucker Band…

This event supports the mission of the Paris-Henry County Chamber of Commerce, and we are thankful to be part of it.”

Haywood County Women Speak About Lessons and Legacies

The women of Brownsville and Haywood County continue to make history daily as they go about fulfilling their responsibilities as mothers, daughters, wives and women. During March and Women's History Month, the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center is acknowledging contributions of seven extraordinary women who will share their stories during "Phenomenal Women Speak," Saturday, March 26 at 2 p.m.

Noted author, Haywood County native and cultural historian, Dr. Cynthia Bond Hopson, will facilitate the panel of local trailblazers and leaders. This is the 8th year for Hopson to lead 8 | DISCOVER

the program and includes the following panelists: Angela Lee, Iva Jarrett, Sandra Humphreys, Melinda Eckley Posey, Sharon Clark, Heather Pennel and Lisa Tisdale Hopson.

"We are blessed to have so many amazing and phenomenal women who live and work in Haywood County," says Hopson.

"When they share their lessons and legacy, we stand taller, become stronger, more confident, and we're reassured that we, too, can soar! This event's always a treat for our community."

Over the past seven years more than 60 women who live or work in Haywood County have shared their powerful journeys.

Panelistare suggested by their peers, former honorees and other community leaders. This year's theme is "My Story Lessons and Legacy."

Hopson's books on Haywood County will be available during the event and include “The Women of Haywood: Their Lives, Our Legacy, Wiggle Tales, Times of Challenge and Controversy”, and her latest inspirational book “Totally Gracefull.”

Clarksville – Explorer’s Landing, the children’s wing of the Customs House Museum, reopened in Jan. 2022 with a new look and feel. Check out the interactive, engaging, education and localized exhibits.

Chattanooga – The Read House celebrates its 150th anniversary with the new “Throughout the Decades Dinner Series,” featuring era-inspired dinner events inspired by historic menus and cookbooks.

Southeast Tennessee – The perfect pampered vacation with a private chef, ride-along guide and scenic adventure with Bike the South: Wine and Bike in the Tennessee Overhill – a treasure trove of rivers, waterfalls, quiet backgrounds and rolling hills set against the backdrop of Cherokee National Forest.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park – Visitors are invited to the help preserve park species by recording sightings of animals, plants and other organisms from their smartphones using the iNaturalist app while hiking or enjoying the

outdoors, as part of the Smokies Most Wanted program.

New Restaurants, Bars, Breweries and Distilleries Nashville – Opening late spring 2022, June is the second experience restaurant from Chef Sean Brock, located above its sister restaurant, Audrey, in East Nashville. June will focus on a unique tasting menu-only format that explores ingredients indigenous to the American South.

Franklin – Burger Dandy downtown brings back retro nostalgia in its dining room and patio and menu items like burgers & dogs, Kool-Aid pickles, apple fried pies, old-fashioned and spiked milkshakes.

Knoxville - Ebony & Ivory Brewing is Knoxville’s 23rd craft brewery opening spring 2022 in North Knoxville and the first with a Black co-owner. Their mission is to create a safe, comfortable, inclusive atmosphere where all can find common ground through their beer.

Pigeon Forge – Guy Fieri’s Downtown Flavortown, opened March 2022, showcases unique culinary combinations, Duck Pin bowling alley, arcade games, Tiki bar, and photo opp in front of an iconic 1968 Chevy Camaro.

Townsend – The second Company Distilling location, set to open May 2022, will feature a tasting room and restaurant, with access to nearby cycling, mountain biking and hiking trails in the Great Smoky Mountains. The original location is in the picturesque town of Thompson’s Station in Middle Tennessee.

Bristol - Located in the heart of Bristol’s historic downtown district, Pins & Friends Duckpin Bowling will feature multiple duckpin bowling lanes, a restaurant, vintage arcade games and more.

Johnson City - Tennessee Hills Brewstillery is the first of its kind in the state combining the best of both worlds. The brewstillery buys locally grown malts and aims to serve a 100% Tennessee made product from grain to glass.

Wartburg - The veteran-owned and family-friendly MoCo Brewing Project features live music, food trucks, hot chocolate and coffee. MoCo partners with local businesses and artists to bring activities downtown including Pints & Paints, Foams and Facials and parties for kids.

Reliance (April 22-23) – The Polk County Ramp Tramp Festival features live bluegrass, folk and rock-and-roll music, a traditional Ramp Meal which includes ramps in eggs, white beans,

cornbread, fried potatoes and streaked meat bacon.

Franklin (April 23-24) – More than 120,000 visitors enjoy arts and crafts vendors, superb entertainment, great food, drink, fun and tradition during the Main Street Festival in the historic downtown.

Savannah Farmers Market Season Begins April 13

Savannah Farmer's Market in downtown Savannah, Tenn. will be bustling bright and early on April 13.

The market has become a popular place for residents to find healthy, delicious food options, health screenings and summer fun, according to Beth Pippin, Hardin County Tourism Director.

“We are located at the Savannah Market, downtown at the corner of Main and Williams Streets”, announced Pippin. Again, this season the market will be stocked with produce fresh from the fields, succulent fruits, country eggs,

local meats and cheeses, and the sweetest baked goods. It is also a great place to pick up local delicacies like home-made jellies and local honey. You can even grab a bouquet of fresh flowers, which are grown right here in Hardin and our surrounding counties.

Farmers Market days are every Wednesday, April 13 through October.

A variety of vendors set up each week; each vendor’s wares change as the crops come in and harvestings begin. The hours are 8 a.m. until 2 p.m…or until they sell out each Wednesday. UT

Extension also hosts a monthly Second Saturday market for farm vendors and local crafters.

“We are excited to once again bring locally grown healthy food and health resources to our Hardin County families”, shared Pippin, “and to partner with the City of Savannah, Pick Tennessee Products and our local UT Extension Services.” Throughout the season, UT Extension will offer food products and information on providing healthy food choices for our area.

Discovery Park of America Grows Annual Three-day Military History and Armed Forces Symposium

by Adding More Content and Special Guests

Discovery Park of America is hosting its annual Military History and Armed Forces Symposium Friday, April 29 through Sunday, May 1, 2022. The event has grown significantly larger than previous years and will feature a variety of programs and interactive activities that explore the past, present and future of the American military. All active military, veterans, their guests and student groups will receive free admission to Discovery Park during all three days of this event.

Sponsored by Union City Coca-Cola and Dixie Gun Works, the Military History and Armed Forces Symposium features presentations from special guests, static and active demonstrations of military equipment and vehicles and gallery talks.

Guests will also experience historical interpreters and period musicians throughout the museum and park.

In addition to bringing back the Lantern Walk this year, the event will include a members-only reception with entertainment provided by Operation Song and a Civil War-period ball with live music and dance instruction provided by the 52nd Regimental String Band. The band will also be performing during a church service held on Sunday morning.

Local Civil War memorabilia collector, Jason Pate, will be sharing some of his collection of rare photos in a special exhibit and presentation, “Hearing Voices of the Past Through Imagery.”

Friday’s events have been designed with students in mind and will provide both military- and history-related content perfect for school groups.

“For guests passionate about history and the military, this

symposium is going to provide a lot to discover,” said Dr. Julie Hill, education events coordinator and lead member in planning the symposium. “Our education and exhibits team have put together three days that are packed with incredible activities highlighting our country’s military past, present and future.”

The list of those presenting from the main stage this year includes: Col. Many-Bears Grinder, USA (Ret.), first woman to serve as Commissioner for the Department of Veterans Services Maj. Gen. Tommy H. Baker, commissioner for Tennessee’s Department of Veteran Services Dr. Elvernice “Sonny” Davis, Chaplain (Col.) USA (Ret.), author of “Reflections of an Army Chaplain” Sue Hoppin, nationally recognized expert on military spouse and family issues, working to bridge the cultural gap between government, private and public groups and military communities Kevin Rumley, USMC, musician who made his personal journey from life as a homeless Veteran suffering from drug addiction to a college graduate with a master’s degree in social work Dr. David Coffey, professor of history at the University of Tennessee at Martin and author of several books, including “In Harm’s Way: A History of the American Military Experience” Wanda Nelson Castellaw, Tennessee native with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, a master’s degree in educational psychology and a passion for supporting military spouses Lt. Those attending the event will also want to spend time exploring Discovery Park’s Military Gallery that can be found on two levels of the museum. The lower level contains a collection of military vehicles and weapons, as well as displays about the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cold War and our current military conflicts. Displays about the Civil War, World War I and World War II can be found on the entry level, as well as an oral history theater that showcases stories shared by Veterans.

miles of inland lakes and freshwater streams nearby, including South Holston Lake. The 7,580 acre reservoir, known for its smallmouth bass fishing, features plenty of fishing holes and 60 percent of its shoreline borders the Cherokee National Forest. Great Smoky Mountains National Park Sets Attendance Record

Great Smoky Mountains National Park experienced the busiest year on record with 14,137,812 visits. Visitation exceeded the 2019 record by 1.5 million visits and 2020 visitation by more than 2 million visits. The park has increas-

ingly become a year-round destination with eight monthly visitation records set during winter and spring months in 2021.

“In the last decade, park visitation has increased by 57%,” said Acting Superintendent Alan Sumeriski. “While increas-

ing visitation presents complex challenges, we are honored to care for a park that is special to so many people. We remain committed to developing innovative solutions to provide the necessary support for visitor services and resource protection.”

Roads, trails, frontcountry campgrounds, and backcountry campgrounds were all busier than normal in 2021.

Frontcountry camping increased 40%, while backcountry camping increased 20%. The park continues to experience its highest visitation in the summer and fall with peaks in July and October. However, visitation levels in the winter and spring months are rapidly increasing. In 2021, the park set individual monthly visitation records in January through June, November, and December. During the winter months, December through February, the park had 600,000 more visits than the 10year average for this time period. During the spring months, March through May, the park had 1.2 million more visits than the 10-year average for this time period.

Operational costs associated with serving more visitors and protecting resources continue to rise. Annual, year-round needs present significant funding and staffing challenges. To help meet critical needs this year, the Friends of the Smokies and Great Smoky Mountains Association are providing more than $4 million in aid. The park is also slated to receive project-specific, short-term funds to help chip away at the maintenance backlog in campgrounds, wastewater systems, and along roads and trails. Construction timelines and project details for significant rehabilitation work are expected to be announced over the next few weeks for several projects.

Park managers will continue to work towards improving access and the visitor

Piecing It Together: Rutherford County’s Quilt Trail

Perhaps you’ve seen them as you’re driving around - large murals of patchwork quilt squares providing a pop of color to the sides of passing barns and buildings. What you may not know is these squares, just like a real quilt, join together to tell a deeper story.

The Rutherford County Quilt Trail is part of a nationwide initiative to bring tourism and cultural preservation to rural

areas. Many of the squares you’ll see originate from family patchwork quilt designs handed down from generation to generation. The very first quilt square was installed on the side of a tobacco barn in Southern Ohio. Now, over 43 states currently take part in the National Quilt Trail, and you can start your journey right here in Middle Tennessee.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Readyville Mill (above) was built in 1812 and continues its work as an operational gristmill and now, restaurant. An idyllic setting, the mill has hosted over 200 special events and serves as a mainstay of this local community.

This square uses a family quilt pattern designed by Ms. Bogle’s mother. A fifth-generation farm named for its grove of hickory trees, Hickory Hill Farm is still an active producer of hay.

Once a hot-spot for school and church field trips to see exotic animals, Cripple Creek Farm currently supports a feeder calf operation. Known as the Judge McFarland property, the original house dates back over 100 years and has been maintained for the last 20 by the Boner family.

Ferrell Hollow Farms serves as a boarding location for special needs horses. Owners Cindy and Alan produce a line of body products featuring unique herbal blends along with handcrafted hardwood chairs and rocking chairs.

Fashioned after a family quilt pattern, this block is featured on the side of a barn built in 1952. The lands it exists on has been a working beef farm for five generations and dates all the way back to the 1770s.
