A king and queen dance contest, a festive parade through the heart of downtown, unique shopping vendors, authentic Czech food (including those delicious kolaches), costumed dancers, downtown Pivo (beer) Pavilion, 15 live Polka bands including Grammy Award winning Brave Combo, and a special country concert featuring a Texas Country Music favorite, Wade Bowen. During your stay make sure to visit Ennis’ historic downtown where you will find wonderful shopping, dining and some new additions that include a new wine and whiskey bistro; The Vine at 119. Stroll the beautiful, tree-lined Dallas Street and shop the Bluebonnet Market where you will find unique vendors selling pottery, baked goods, jewelry, fresh produce and more. The Bluebonnet Market is open every Saturday, 8 a.m - 12 p.m., April through October. Watch your favorite movie under the stars at the popular 7-screen drive in theatre, Galaxy Drive-in Theatre. Catch a live play at the Ennis Public Theatre or at Theatre Rocks. Check out an action packed drag car race at the Texas Motorplex. The options are limitless! Mark your calendars for upcoming events that include Blues on Main June 11th and 12th. Main Street Midway will hit the downtown on June 22nd and remain through the 26th as a nice prequel to our Ennis Freedom Fest that is on June 25th! On October 1st our larger than life hay maze will return to celebrate all things Fall and Halloween! Autumn Daze will be the last weekend in October and we are looking forward to revealing the entertainers this year very soon!

Community outreach and activities — KJT youth program, scholarships for KJT members who are graduating seniors History — KJT Society began so that Czech immigrants could bond with each other after coming to the United States. The Ennis chapter was founded in 1900. KJT began accepting women members in 1980. Although it started out as an exclusively Catholic organization, in 2008, KJT opened membership to all Christians.

History — Sokol — which means falcon in Czech — was founded in 1862 in Prague, and brought to the United States by Czech immigrants to preserve their heritage. The Ennis unit was formed in 1908.

PolkaFest Run returns May 28

Area runners of all ages will be participating in the 22nd Annual PolkaFest Run on Saturday, May 28, with three events to choose from; a 10K Race, One Mile Fun Run/Walk and 5K Race. The Ennis Rotary Club continues the annual tradition, after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, with HEB as the title sponsor for 2022. Certified by the USATF, the 3.1 mile or 6.2 mile courses begin on the west side of the Bluebonnet City, the longer event starting at 7 a.m., 5K set to get underway at 7:30 a.m. In between is a One Mile Fun Run/Walk, which begins at 7:10 a.m. Awards will be distributed at 8:30 a.m. Registration is open online at runsignup.com/ Race/TX/Ennis/22ndAnnualPolkafestRunWalk5K10K and more information is available on the event Facebook page: PolkaFest Run. Individuals may register in-person, May 28, at 2405 Yorkstown Dr., in front of Lonestar Fitness Center, from 5:45 a.m. until 6:45 a.m. Registration costs vary depending on the event you choose, the age of the participant and when you register. Funds raised by the Rotary Club go directly to

benefit many local groups and projects such as Rotary Park, the Splash Pad, Ennis Public Library’s Reading Program, scholarships and non-profits in the community. 2022 Country Concert Artist Twenty years and some 4,000 shows into his career, the name Wade Bowen has become synonymous with Texas country music - and for good reason. An artistic descendant of American icons like Guy Clark, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Robert Earl Keen and more, Bowen is another link in a Texan chain of roots-rock poets stretching back more than 50 years - but his ambition never ended at the state line. “I will carry that flag proudly,” Bowen says of his Red-Dirt distinction. “But I’ve always said I’m not a ‘Texas artist,’ I’m an artist from Texas, and I think there’s a difference.” Seen as one of the genre’s finest and most authentic modern voices, Bowen’s approach stays rooted in tradition, but also stands on the creative cutting edge.

Kolache is Polka Fest fast food In-take contest slated for May 28

Four champions to be crowned An annual tradition at the Polka Fest is the kolache eating contest. It is set for 1 p.m. downtown, on Saturday, May 28. Consuming the fruit or cheese-stuffed puffy dough treats takes on a science exhibit of osmosis and lasts less than a minute. The Czech and Slovakian pastry is downed by contestants, rapid-fire, to see who can devour three in the quickest time. Prizes are awarded by the sponsor to the winner in Men’s, Women’s, Youth Boy and Youth Girls divisions. Aspiring dessert-eaters should meet at the downtown stage at noon on May 28 or register in advance at the Ennis Chamber of Commerce. Kolache is a semisweet wedding dessert from Central Europe, which later became a part of breakfast fare in South London. It has become popular in parts of the U.S.A. Originally derived from an old Slavonic word, kolo, meaning circle or wheel, the tasty dish has varied over the years, and is even made with sausage or other meats. In true Czech tradition, however, kolache is only stuffed with non-meat items. Czechs immigrants who settled in Texas began making klobasniky, with meat, and so the dish continues to evolve. One thing that is common is that it disappears in a hurry and its handiwork is a satisfied smile.

Kolache King competes again Gastronomic gladiator seeks 2022 crown

One event during the Memorial Day Polka Festival enjoying increased popularity in recent years is the Kolache Eating Contest. It takes place downtown on Saturday, May 28, and while it’s not quite Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, it has a Joey Chestnut-like champion. Jonathan Newton, a former volleyball head coach (for three years) and soccer assistant coach at Ennis High School, has won six straight competitive eating titles, and he’s returning this month. The Emperor of the Esophagus says he’s ready to rumble and that he’ll “participate until I lose.” At 6’2, 225, the San Antonio native loves the Spurs of the NBA. And he craves kolaches, the sweet Czechia pastry that holds a portion of fruit and is surrounded by puffy dough. “I just enjoy doing it every year for the free snack,” he joked, “and my kids get a kick out of it.” In previous Polka events, the rules have been simple – who can consume three kolaches in the shortest amount of time? While his style appears akin to osmosis, he does chew and he does wash down the comfort-sweet with water. It has never taken as long as a minute, and while he claims to savor the flavor, his fastest times are around 35 seconds. Originating from the Bohemian or Old Slavonic word, kolo, kolache means circle or wheel, and Newton accelerates them into Hot Wheels. Zoom! Anatomically, the human tummy is not a bottomless pit, though this gastronomic gladiator would welcome a change in the rules. “I would like to do at least 10 kolaches per contestant,” he explained, “or have a 3-to-5-minute time limit to eat as many as possible.” Sounds like he’s upping the ante to a meal.

Together with his wife, Kendal, who coached softball at Ennis a few years ago, they have three sons in Jonathan (8), Joshua (5) and one-year-old Joseph. They reside in Waxahachie. Currently, Jonathan is a special education teacher at Mansfield’s T.A. Howard Middle School. When he left Ennis, he was an assistant coach in volleyball, track (high jump, pole vault, throwers) and soccer at Timberview H.S. Presently, he is out of coaching. Kendal teaches at the Red Oak ISD. The couple met while studying at Stephen F. Austin State University. He played basketball, club volleyball and threw discus at Castle Hills First Baptist in San Antonio. It wasn’t until he came to Ennis that he began throwing kolaches down the chute.

Lillie Crowley’s classic prize winning recipes Halushka Texas Czech Almond Pie (Potatoe Dumplings & Cabbage) Ingredients:

5 potatoes, grated or shredded 1 Tb salt 3 eggs, beaten 3 C flour 2 onions, chopped 1 head cabbage, shredded 1/2 c. butter

Ingredients:

1 C white corn syrup 1 C dark brown sugar 1/3 tsp salt 1/3 C melted butter (unsalted) 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 1/2 tsp almond extract 3 eggs, slightly beaten 1 C almonds

Directions: Add beaten eggs to potatoes, then add flour to make a soft dough. Have a pot of water boiling as for spaghetti. Dip spoon into boiling water and drop dough by the spoonful into the water. If spoon is dipped the dough will not stick to the spoon. Cook 10 minutes, drain, rinse with hot water. Saute onions in butter until golden brown. Add shredded cabbage and cook until tender about 1/2 hour. Add salt to potato mixture, then mix with cabbage and add to a white sauce mix.

Czech Quick Pickles (Kvasaky)

Ingredients:

Clean quart size jar Cucumbers 1 Tb canning salt 1 tsp sugar 1 tsp pickling spice, fresh dill or dill seed 1/2 C 10% acidity white vinegar* HOT water Directions: Place salt and sugar in bottom of jar. Slice cucumbers into rounds, sticks or spears and place in jar. Add pickling spice or dill, vinegar and HOT water. Close jar and shake well to dissolve salt and sugar. Wrap closed hot jar in cup, towel or newspaper. Set aside for 12 to 24 hours. Add carrot sticks, fresh green beans or mini-carrots if desired. *Use 5% vinegar for a milder pickle

Ingredients:

1 pt. sauerkraut 1/2 c. diced bacon 2 green onions with tops, chopped or 1/2 c. onion, chopped 1 sm. raw potato, diced 1/4 tsp. sugar 1/8 tsp. caraway Salt and pepper to taste Directions: Open can or jar and drain sauerkraut well. Cover with fresh water and boil for about 10 min., then drain again. Fry bacon and onions until lightly brown. In blender, put 1 cup of water and the raw potatoe, diced, and blend until liquefied. Combine bacon and onion, potato, caraway, salt, sugar and pepper. Stir until mixed, then pour over sauerkraut. Cook for about 15 min.
