would like to start out the New Year by announcing that Dr. Richard D. Henderson, DVM, has been selected as the Texas Veterinary Medical Association’s General Practitioner of the Year! This is a very prestigious award. You can read Dr. Henderson’s pet column right here in Waves Magazine.

His Pet Corner is a must-read each month.

Congratulations, Dr. Henderson. The award is very well deserved.

You will notice that our Restaurant Section has expanded once again. Tom Valliere and Charlie Bresenhan work tirelessly each and every month to bring us all the latest news and information regarding the Galveston area dining scene.

2020 was a banner year for us. We couldn’t do it without you. Again, I want to continually stress the importance of BUYING LOCAL. Let’s all continue to support our local businesses throughout 2021. It’s very important that we do this, and it is the right thing to do.

It is with a heavy heart that I want to share with our readers the passing of a good friend and a wonderful person. Edward Glenn Kier passed away on December 7, 2020. Eddie is survived by his partner of 43 years, Johnnie Mize.

For many years, Eddie and Johnnie owned and operated West End Gallery and Decor in Jamaica Beach. Eddie and Johnnie were Waves Magazines very first advertiser. They signed on to advertise when all I had to show them was a flyer, a brochure, and a dream. That is the kind of people they are. Eddie had such a big heart, filled with kindness.

Eddie wasn't just the life of the party; on many occasions he WAS the party. He had such an infectious laugh and could keep a smile on everyone's face.

I know many of you got to meet Eddie at our Waves Social parties. You can't find friends any more loyal and caring. Eddie will be missed by all.

Friends are cordially invited to the celebration of Eddie's life that will be held on February 14th, 2021 at The Galveston Country Club at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, Johnnie requests that memorial contributions be made in Eddie's name, to the Galveston Island Humane Society.

e humans often make impulsive decisions, some of which we regret. Some choices only affect us long-term like that tattoo one Saturday night after a few too many cold beers. Other poorly planned decisions can have lasting ramifications on family members, and in the case of animal ownership, the quality of life of an animal. Deciding to purchase or adopt a dog or cat is one that should be thought out thoroughly in advance to be sure you can provide for all the needs of the animal. There are a number of questions that we should ask ourselves before taking the pet plunge.

Dogs being social creatures need the time with their person to be socially well adjusted. Too much time alone is a recipe for boredom and destructive behavioral problems. The poor dog often gets blamed for eating the couch when in fact the owner has unwitting neglected the pet’s emotional needs for attention. If your job and social commitments are numerous there may be a better time in the future to adopt a pooch.

suited to the individual that has a busy out-of-home schedule or someone that travels often on weekends.

Because they do not require outdoor bathroom spaces, cats can be left for long hours by themselves, even over a weekend. Although felines are more independent than dogs and adjust to being by themselves, I feel having two cats will make them happier and more active in the long run.

Happy cats with clean litter boxes are less likely to develop inappropriate urine-marking behaviors.

Another frustrating cat behavior is clawing furniture. This problem is one of the leading causes of owners turning their pet over to animal shelters. If having pristine couches

and recliners in your home is a high priority and you want to own cats, then the pet owner must learn to trim nails from the time the kitten enters your life. Trimming cat nails is very easy to learn and takes less than one minute once you perfect the technique. In addition, providing your new cat with scratching posts and carpeted kitty furniture is also helpful to direct their natural scratching behavior to the right places.

Before choosing a particular dog think about your own lifestyle during your free time. If you enjoy the outdoors, breeds like labs, German shorthair pointer, Brittany spaniels and Vizslas have temperaments that fit well with runners and weekend athletes. These breeds do require daily vigorous exercise to stay happy and well adjusted. They would be a terrible choice for apartment living especially for individuals who spend a lot of time with their televisions or on social media. Having a fenced yard for additional exercise is a must

for these guys.

For people that want mostly a house pet, some breeds that might fit the bill include pugs, Chihuahuas, or King Charles spaniels. These guys do require some exercise and walks but also adapt well to living in small spaces.

Another question to ask oneself is, “Can my budget handle to medical needs of the breed I’m interested in?” For instance, the English and French bulldogs are very popular breeds today. They demand a large price tag from the start and encounter more medical problems than the average dog and therefore go to the vet more often. I sometimes see owners who have spent so much money on their pup that there is not much money left to afford the veterinary costs associated with these dogs.

Enough said about pure breed dogs. Remember there are plenty of

awesome Heinz 57 dogs at our local animal shelter that can fit your needs and provide you with a pet you will love as much any blue blood.

If you going to have a pet, either do it right or not at all! Maybe this is not the right time in your life to care properly for a pet. If not, wait until the time is right. When all else fails, start with a fish tank, but remember, fish need to be cared for also.

The Famous Ladies Of Galveston

s we start 2020, I thought it might be fun to look at the famous women of Galveston.

• Winifred Black - Born Winifred Sweet Bonfils, lived from 1863 to 1936.

She was the first female reporter and journalist to record pictures of Galveston after the storm of 1900. On assignment with the New York Journal, she disguised herself as a boy and “cajoled” her way through police lines. Although not born in Galveston, Winifred is credited with many of the pictures we see in present day records of the great storm.

• Sara Haden - Born in 1898 in Galveston, Texas. She was always cast in character roles. After their parents’ divorce, Haden and her elder sister Beatrice Shelton Haden (born 1897) attended Sacred Heart Academy in Galveston. She made her film debut in 1934 in the Katharine Hepburn movie “Spitfire”. Haden later signed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer as a contract actress in the late 1930s and had roles in many of the studio’s films, most notably in the Andy Hardy series starring Mickey Rooney. She was cast as the spinster Aunt Milly Forrest.

•

• Minnie Fisher Cunningham (1882 –1964) - She holds the distinction of being the first female student at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston to earn a Graduate of Pharmacy degree. She was president of the Texas Equal Suffrage Association from 1915 to 1920 and became the first executive secretary of the National League of Women Voters. She was an important leader in the campaign for votes for women on the state and national levels. In 1923, she organized a Women’s National Democratic Club. She ran for the U.S. Senate in 1928 and for governor in 1944.

• Tracy Dawn Scoggins - Born November 13, 1953 in Galveston. As an actress she is known for her roles as Monica Colby in the 1980s primetime soap opera “Dynasty”. Tracy also starred in the first season of the 1993–1997 television series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.

• Valerie Ritchie Perrine - Born September 3, 1943 in Galveston. Her film appearances include Superman (1978), The Electric Horseman (1979), and Superman II (1980). Perrine was photographed nude for a pictorial layout in the May 1972 issue of Playboy, later appearing on the cover in August 1981. She then became the first actress to appear nude on American television by exposing her breasts during the May 4, 1973, PBS broadcast of Bruce Jay Friedman’s “Steambath” on Hollywood Television Theater.

• Katherine Marie Helmond - Born in Galveston, (1929 – 2019). Over her five decades of television acting, she was known for her starring role as ditzy matriarch Jessica Tate on the sitcom Soap (1977–1981) and her co-starring role as feisty mother Mona Robinson on Who’s the Boss? (1984–1992). She also played Lois Whelan (the mother of Debra Barone) on Everybody Loves Raymond.

Porch Pirates

n estimated 36% of Americans have had a delivered package stolen from outside of their house at least once, according to C + R Research.

The more proactive among these bandits are even starting to think outside of the box, tailgating delivery trucks to steal parcels as soon as they have been delivered.

NO! WE DON’T LIKE THAT! Texas lawmakers have passed a bill that would fine anyone convicted of porch piracy between $4,000 to $10,000, along with a possible six months to ten years in prison.

Always alert our local police if you become a Porch Pirate victim. Let’s all look out for each other, be good neighbors, and help to stomp out this horrible crime.

The holiday season was a goldmine for Porch Pirates.

Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, the U.S. Postal Service shipped more than 800 million parcels.

Some dishonest people have found that being a Porch Pirate can be pretty easy. Burglary takes a little bit of skill, robbery takes more skill, but there is almost no skill in walking up to someone’s house and taking a package.

Studies have shown thieves tend to operate during daylight hours; homes closer to the roadway are targeted more than those way back; and the package size, visibility, and whether or not the package has a brand on it seems to be a factor.

Some interesting findings are that 51 % of Porch Pirates are women. A lot higher percentage than other crimes that are committed. Also, the Porch Pirates tend to be in the middleclass income group.

ou are probably aware that blue light from digital devices has the potential to cause eye damage, but did you know that blue light from your computer and cell phone screens can also cause skin damage?

Blue light is a high energy, short-wavelength light emitted by the computer screen, cell phone, other digital devices, and the sun. In the age of the pandemic when we are all spending so much more time on our devices, blue light skin exposure and skin damage is on the rise.

How Blue Light Causes Skin DamageBlue light stimulates the production of free radicals in the skin which accelerates the appearance of aging. The effects are cumulative and can lead to increased pigmentation, redness and swelling. In addition, your skin’s regenerative cycle can get thrown out of whack causing more skin damage over time.

How to Minimize the Damage - Reducing your time on the phone, computer or other electronic devices is unlikely to happen in this time of social distancing and need for alternate forms of communication.

However, there are a few simple things you can do to lower your exposure. When possible, keep your phone a minimum of 12 inches away from your skin. Placing your calls on speaker, rather than hugging it to your cheek, is a practical measure you can implement. You can also reduce the brightness on your screen by 50% or enable the “Night Shift” setting to limit the blue light emitted.

Vegetarian. Zero family history. Seemingly the healthiest person, at least I know.

The nickel-sized lump has turned my world upside down and wreaked havoc on my life. But I am pushing through the advised treatments, and I will use my strong, otherwise healthy body to get this alien lifeform destroyed, out of me, and gone forever. And as best as my body and mind will allow me, I’m going to continue my healthy lifestyle and workouts throughout this challenging time.

On one of my early pity-party days, I just couldn’t believe my body had betrayed me by allowing one microscopic cancer cell to become two, four, sixteen, several million.

How could my body not take care of business early and rid my body of the aberrant cell before it got out of hand?

After the cry-fest was over, I tried to turn my thinking around to the beautiful things my body does for me daily, and thanks to a compilation on Brightside.me, here’s just a small sample of why I should be thanking my body instead of denouncing it: • The human brain has a memory capacity, equivalent to more than four terabytes on a hard drive.

• A newborn child can breathe and swallow at the same time for up to seven months.

• Nerve impulses sent from the brain move at a speed of 170 miles per hour.

• A single human brain generates more

The food, of course, is the real star here. Large portions of delicious, offbeat flavor combinations coupled with unusual presentations support their “eclectic” identity. The emphasis is always on fresh, healthy food. There are no fried foods in this restaurant, so you won’t get fries and a burger. What you will get is a delicious hand-formed burger on a homemade bun with a choice of delicious sides (My favorite is the Asian noodles.) The bun, like most of the breads and baked goods, comes fresh from their own bakery, “Pattycakes”, across the street. Make sure you visit after your meal to check out their artisan breads and their unbelievable pastries.

The Mosquito Cafe Their breakfasts are legendary on the island. The bowls – a unique serving style- range from standard meat, eggs, and potatoes to some very unusual creations. One of the favorites is their Mosquito Benedict as described in their menu. “A house baked savory scone covered with sautéed shrimp, mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, fresh asparagus, and poached eggs topped with hollandaise sauce with a choice of cheesy grits, roasted potatoes, or apple pecan salad”.

The salads are amazing. My personal favorite is the Thai chicken salad. A grilled chicken breast atop a bed of mixed greens tossed with tamari sesame vinaigrette, topped with roasted peanuts and Thai peanut sauce.

This could not happen to a nicer couple. Operating out of the kitchen in their new location, they retain the food truck and use it for special events in the future.

Tara Head and her husband PJ are the owners of Koop’s. Both are from Galveston and PJ’s roots go back many years. The business is named in memory of their late sister and friend Kristen Head. Kristen’s nickname was Pook, hence the backward spelling of Koop’s. Always ready to get her hands dirty in the kitchen, the name is a fitting tribute to a loved family member.

alk about adversity! This small family owned business started in a food truck on Avenue S in the parking lot of the former Barbecue Barn. From the very start, they created a huge buzz in our island food community. The business thrived with lines at the window. Just as quickly as they rose to prominence, they crashed as a landlord dispute sent them packing for a new location. Lo and behold, they were able to strike a deal to take over the Charlie Burger location on 23rd street. Offering seated dining, they were well on the way to being a full service brick and mortar restaurant when tragedy struck again when Galveston ordered all restaurants to close and offer only takeout and delivery service.

Well, it just so happens that take out is a core competency for a food truck, and barbecue is a perfect takeout food.

Specializing in smoked brisket, they offer a full range of smoked meats, sandwiches, sides and plates. Their ribs are delicious and serves as their usual Saturday special. For takeout during restricted times, they offer several daily specials that are reasonably priced. The core menu rotates daily but they always add one or two surprise specials, so you are never bored. They post their specials daily on their Facebook page. Some of the past specials included corned beef for St Patrick’s Day and a special gumbo offered in memory of their sister on her birthday March 9th; a tradition I hope they continue.

Far from traditional, their daily menu mixes it up. A recent menu included a brisket banh mi with garlic noodles - a twist on the traditional Vietnamese sandwich, or how about a brisket banh mi taco with a side? More traditional options include a loaded baked potato or a burger with fries. For a treat, try their brisket street corn in a cup for a twist on that Mexican favorite elote dish. Their barbecue plates are always available and offer a selection of meats and sides.

Of The Island

I

am vigorously energetic regarding the whole creative process of producing a composition, from cutting and sanding the stretcher boards, to priming the canvas. It’s all the culmination of a painting. I love to be in the grip of creative fervor. I enjoy impressionistic theory, choosing not to paint or depict intricate details in a composition because I prefer to portray the overall visual effects creating an intense color vibration. I leave areas of the composition open to the imagination of the viewer and create relationships within the composition with abstract shapes combined with traditional perception, juxtaposition of bright vivid colors, oneness with the subject, and feeling the emotion of its essence as I see it. At least, that’s my intention. Sometimes it works out! It is thrilling to see the viewer’s reaction when they view a scene that I have captured as I have seen it through my eyes of God’s magnificent creation and see the stirring of the viewer’s imagination.

Art has always been a major influence in my life. I am inspired

by Sam Houston National Forest which surrounds my home in the country where I find a wealth of subjects to paint. I paint what I know and have seen with my own eyes. Currently, my work is mostly seascapes with atmospheric conditions from my observations outside in the open air, although I enjoy painting from sketches completed years earlier from my travels across America and abroad. I continue to use sketches of the ocean, especially from Galveston Texas. Sometimes, my Plein Air work is transferred to the studio to add the finishing touches, but I still love studio work. With the thought of a new painting, I get excited and thrilled from my drawings and notes on the light, mood, and essence which I made many years earlier. I began painting the ocean when I was in junior high school when my parents first took me and my siblings to Galveston.

Since that time, I have loved the ocean and the multitude of

subject surrounding salt water such as birds, shells, seaweed, and boats which I include in my paintings.

I studied Fine Art at Sam Houston State University, winning many art competitions, and was awarded summa cum laude. I have intensely studied the work of many of the world’s leading contemporary artists which added to my understanding of art history. I was mentored by the State Artist of Texas, Harry Ahysen, Jimmy Barker, and my friend, Professor Kenneth Zonker who taught art at SHSU for nearly four decades, and who helped me develop my style and workout many diverse projects.

Claude Monet and Paul Cezanne are my favorite artists, Monet, a French Plein Air painter who painted luminous waterscapes and Cezanne, a French Post-Impressionist for his remarkable still lifes.

Most of my paintings are done with oil which I find most stimulating, but I often use watercolor to describe specific subjects. I use gouache for still life paintings because it is a water media that easily pleases my personal creativity.

I have seriously sketched from the age of six, back as far as I can remember. In high school, I won many art contests, one of which was a watercolor of a child chasing a white rabbit in the snow, which was quite symbolic at the time. People around me didn’t support my desire to paint and when I purchased my first set of highly coveted oil paints in my junior year of high school from income of my first job and first paycheck, they told me it was a waste of time and money.

However, my love of art and the ocean could not be extinguished. I am always impressed with the salt water in any part of the world and can recall where each painting is created and my thought process behind each one. Each painting has a story. I relish the qualities of contrast and subtlety, the waters’ power to entice and envelope and to create a dramatic expression. It is my intention for the observer of my paintings to feel the peace, mood, wind, rain, heat, or cold sensation that I felt when I first viewed it. I find much pleasure in presenting a seascape on canvas in such a way that reaches through the layers to the heart and soul of the viewer so that they stop and take pause.

They say the neon lights are bright on Broadway. But, this year, the Great White Way’s biggest night of the year is going virtual, as the Tony Awards will take place online. Tony Award Productions released the following statement regarding the American Theatre Wing’s 2020 Tony Awards, presented by the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing: The 74th Annual Tony Awards, scheduled to air live on the CBS Television Network on Sunday, June 7th from Radio City Music Hall in New York City, will be postponed and rescheduled at a later date, in coordination with our broadcast partner. The health and safety of the Broadway community, artists and fans are of the utmost importance to us.

We will announce new dates and additional information once Broadway opens again. We are looking forward to celebrating Broadway and our industry when it is safe to do so.

After extensive research from such sources as Broadway World, Playbill and Variety, here’s what we know so far:

Though the Tony Awards had originally announced that a ceremony would take place late this fall, that timeline was based on the assumption that productions would be able to resume in March 2021, Charlotte St. Martin, president of the Broadway League, said at the Theatermakers Summit. Now that many shows are eyeing a return in fall 2021, St. Martin said Tony Award presenters have more time to create the digital ceremony. “We don’t have a decision date yet,” St. Martin said in a discussion with SiriusXM host Julie James.

“Since we’re not opening in March, we have more planning time.” St. Martin said the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing, which co-present the Tony Awards, are working with CBS, the traditional broadcast partner of the Tony Awards, as well as producers of the Tony Awards to determine what the ceremony will look like during the pandemic.

“Our timeline has always been fluid and the partners are working together to create the best possible Tony Awards in the tradition of the brand,” a spokesperson for the Tony Awards wrote in a statement to Broadway News.

On October 15, Tony Award winner James Monroe Iglehart announced the nominees for the Tony Awards. Important takeaways: Slave Play became the most nominated play in Tony Awards history (12 nominations), with The Inheritance closely following (11 nominations).

The most-nominated musical of the year is Jagged Little Pill (15 nominations), followed by

Moulin Rouge! The Musical (14 nominations).

Aaron Tveit is the only nominee in his category (Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical) and all nominees for Best Original Score come from plays instead of musicals. The nominating committee considered 18 productions from the 2019-2020 season, after setting an eligibility cut-off date of Feb. 19, 2020. The Tony Awards made the initial announcement about a forthcoming digital ceremony on Aug. 21. The ceremony was originally scheduled to take place at Radio City Music Hall on June 7, but was postponed after theaters shut down in March 2020.

“Though unprecedented events cut the Broadway season short, it was a year full of extraordinary work that deserves to be recognized,” Charlotte St. Martin, president of the Broadway League and Heather Hitchens, President & CEO of the American Theatre Wing, said in a press release. “We are thrilled not only to have found a way to properly celebrate our artists’ incredible achievements this season, but also to be able to uplift the entire theatre community and show the world what makes our Broadway family so special at this difficult time. The show must go on, no matter what – and it will.”

Here’s hoping when they are finally broadcast, I’ll be able to continue my Annual Tony Awards party tradition, even if it’s virtual, too. Of course, all y’all will be invited!

C l o s e - u p pat r i c k l e m i r e Spring time is ling time

S

pring is ling time in our Texas coastal and near offshore waters. Their arrival signals the return of the first of the warm water, near surface, finny predators that many of us eagerly anticipate. They are our most unpredictable species during this early period. At times, they will eat anything that smells or looks like food — but almost any bait can also be turned down.

The strong suit of these early arrivals is that the biggest ones seem to lead the parade.

Late March and April through May can produce some brutes over 100 pounds. During that period in 2005, several were weighed in at the Galveston Yacht Basin that went from 85 to almost 96 pounds.

The Texas State Record of 108.44 pounds was caught on May 9, 1998. The 2005 S.T.A.R. Tournament which started on Memorial Day weekend was won by Shane Barthelmess with a 75 lb.-14 oz. brute, taken on June 1 1 out of Freeport. Some of the baits and tactics that can be used to get one of these beasts to boat side is the heart of this piece.

It’s hard for just about any ling to turn down a live bait, such as a small blue runner, hardhead catfish, pinfish or crab, etc. These baits are easy to come by, whether you have to catch them at the dock or offshore. Various dead natural baits to use are whole squid, a glob of squid, Spanish sardines, cigar minnows, sandtrout, etc. Artificials that work is numerous and include spoons, lead head jigs, Snapper Slapper@jigs, butterfly type jigs, castable cedar plugs, soft plastic swim baits and soft plastic crabs.

The live or dead fish baits can all be fished nose-hooked, through the bottom of the head and out the top or hooked in the back, ahead of the dorsal fin. They can be freelined or fished Carolina rigged, using the smallest size of egg weight that will get your presentation into the strike zone. The amount of egg weight needed is dictated by the current’s strength. Use the least amount of weight you can, a slow sink gets more looks while your bait is descending through the water column.

A bait about 3-4’ under a float is a killer and can be fished away from the boat for one of those unseen surprise ling. If you choose the live hardhead catfish, be sure to carefully clip their dorsal and pectoral fins close to their body with diagonal cutters, etc. before putting them in your baitwell. Safely dispose of those

clippings. When choosing to use a live crab, carefully remove the crab’s claws; besides eliminating a pinch point for you, it will also make it easier for your ling to inhale. It’s best to punch the holes through its shell with an icepick or a hook other than the one you are going to fish with. Their shells are tough and can dull your hook point—something to think about.

Artificials that have worked for me, from near the surface to the bottom, are Snapper Slapper jigs in 1 and 3 ounce sizes. Pink/chartreuse, black/purple, purple/ white and all white are my favorites. Tip them with either a whole Spanish sardine or squid. The baitfish is head hooked on the main hook and the stinger hooked at around the mid body area. Be sure to leave a little slack in the stinger’s cable to let the baitfish lay straight and be able to flex in a natural swimming motion. They, along with other lead head jigs, can also be fished with a 4” to 6” soft plastic swim or curly tail. Those butterfly type jigs that were covered in the November 2005 issue are one of the new hot baits on the block. Jig them shallow for near surface swimmers or deeper throughout the water column for those unseen cruisers. Another of those “new, hot baits” is the castable cedar plug, an adaptation of the standard trolling configuration of the traditional cedar plug. The only place I know of as of this writing where they can be purchased is at Islander’s Custom Tackle on Galveston Island. It’s a rigging technique I came up with in early 2005. Complete details on them will be covered in next month’s issue. Ling love ‘em at any depths. Soft plastic, 4” to 7” swim baits such as those by Storm@, Panther Martin@ and Tsunami@ have a lifelike look at any depth. The same goes for those 4” soft plastic crabs by Rip Tide@.Cutting the legs and pinchers so that they are individual, like on a live crab, gives the Rip Tide soft plastic crab a more natural appearance. I put a 1 h” long piece of 18 gauge copper wire through the first portion of each claw and elbow and into the body after giving it a defensive, ready to fight, natural look “Wacky” rigged or nose hooked 9 inch Slug-O’s@ or Berkeley’s@ 10 inch inshore eels “get bit” too.

The tackle I use for ninety percent of my offshore fishing is a Shimano@ TLD 15 mounted on a 7’ Allstar Graphite@ rod. The TLD 15 is spooled up with 300’ of white or Hi-Vis yellow 100# Power Pro Spectra@. A 50# mono backing is under the Power Pro, just enough to bring the Spectra to full spool. I tie 12-14’ of 80-100# mono to the Spectra with a Lemire modified Tony Pena knot. I dull the last 5-8’ of the mono to “Poor Man’s Fluorocarbon” condition. This great knot and procedure were covered in detail in my February and March articles in this almanac section. The virtually-no-stretch feature of the Power Pro Spectra really aids in controlling a big fish, close in or at a distance. Its feel of what’s going on at your hook and powerful hooksets also work in your favor.

Remember, ling are not primarily surface feeders.

The mid-depths and the bottom are their real feeding grounds. Always keep a watchful eye for near surface cruisers. They can appear in a heartbeat and be gone as quickly. Chances are, you will have time to do a maneuver I call “stop chumming”. What that amounts to is throwing a couple of pieces of squid or a couple of sardines about 6-8’ in front of your “cruiser”; the chance is great it will stop to investigate and maybe take time to eat them — this is your chance to make some kind of presentation. If there are several smaller ling with a much bigger one, most of the time the smaller ones will get to those stop chum pieces first; this opens the chance to bait the big one. All of this happens quickly, you must have a plan of action rather than a reaction. When a near surface cruiser disappears, go to the mid-depths or the bottom with your offering — it’s very likely the ling is still around.

All the following techniques apply to live or dead baits or the artificial, unless noted differently.

Hook size is dictated by bait and tackle size.

When a near surface casual cruiser comes into view, cast ahead of and beyond it. The bait crossing its line of motion on the retrieve has the appearance of an escape move of a prey species.

Casting a bait directly ahead, say 15-20’, and just twitching it is OK, but a retrieve toward a ling may trigger its flee response. With any bait, pull it away from a close ling, stop, let it sink a little; pull away again if needed and stop. This will many times trigger a strike. When a ling turns its head slightly away with the bait in its mouth, strike with a “J” type hook or quickly wind tight when using a circle hook— ling spit baits a lot if given the chance. If the ling is swimming toward you and it takes the bait, waiting until it turns before setting the hook is one way to go and is what most fishermen do. If you try to set the hook when it’s coming directly toward you, use this method; give the rod an up sweep; the chance of a hookup is greater than a straight pull. In this situation, a “J” hook has a greater hookup potential. Use a horizontal or side sweep if the ling is sideways or going away from you; naturally, this sweep of the rod is done in the opposite direction that the ling is swimming.

After the hookup, the next round of fun begins.

Most hooked ling will come to the near surface area at some point. When one comes up shallow quickly, with heavy side/horizontal rod pressure, they can be brought to boat side quickly.

This tactic, called “down and dirty” is basically applying heavy rod and drag pressure to the left if it’s swimming to your right and making it turn and swim to your left. As it turns and starts left, your pressure on the line pulls it somewhat in your direction, as you retrieve as much line as you can. As it passes in front of you and to your left, horizontal pressure to the right is applied.

Repeat as necessary, this side pulling, swimming direction changes and the retrieving of your line

will bring a big ling to boat side quickly. The line retrieval will naturally depend upon how much closer it will be swimming or how far you can pull it; the retrieval might be in half turns of your reel handle or many — it depends a bunch on the fish, they are sort of like us humans, they have different personalities and attitudes. This heavy side pressure seems to somehow disorient a big ling, allowing you lead it to the boat as if it were on a leash. While this may not sound as sporty as a 30-minute battle, time is always on the fish’s side; also, tournaments don’t give added points for long battles. Using this tactic, I’ve brought several of over 70# to the gaff in about a minute and a half. Unless you have a lot of deck space to work with as on a party boat, for instance, a ling of almost any size needs to go directly into an appropriate size cooler. On the deck, they can break your leg or worse, and destroy tackle, boxes, etc. Those 5 to 7

spines, remnants of a ling’s first dorsal fin, are short, stiff and sharp. Avoid them, they can inflict serious, painful cuts very quickly. When a big ling is brought boat side the first time after this down and dirty technique, a miss with the gaff will result in a strong and long run. This is also the time when your chances of losing your prize escalate, its weight falling against the reel’s drag can result in a broken line or pulled hook. When the gaff or gaffs are struck home, step back a step, quickly put your reel’ s clicker on and the reel out of gear. If your ling comes off the gaff, it will fall against the clicker. This does two things you need most at this point, preventing a pulled hook or broken line, and preventing a backlash while letting it run off against the slight pressure of the clicker. You may do this with thumb pressure, but I guarantee you that the dumbest, properly working clicker is smarter than the smartest human thumb! Over the years, I’ve saved numerous sizable fish of varied species with this “on the clicker and out of gear” move.

When your ling has its second chance and is running off against the clicker, put your reel back into gear and then off the clicker and the fight is back on. This should be done automatically with any fish that’s about to be gaffed.

As with any sight fishing, polarized sunglasses and a dark underbilled hat are close to being must-use items; you can’t make a timely bait

presentation if you can’t see them as soon and as long as possible. An example which shows you never know when that ling of a lifetime is going to show happened on May 6, 2001 : it was on the party boat Texsun Il out of Galveston — I was supposed to fish that day but something came up and I couldn’t make the trip. The person fishing on my spot had never been offshore fishing. He hooked into this monster of a ling and was having some trouble handling the rod, and after a struggle, he gave the rod over to one of the deckhands, who pulled on it a while and then turned the rod over to Capt. Johnny Williams. After about 45 minutes total, the brute was finally brought to gaff. The thing was huge; Capt. Williams phoned me to come to the dock to take some photos — I’m glad he did, it was the biggest ling any of us had personally ever seen. At the dock, on certified scales, it weighed 111 1/2 lbs.!! It would have been, and would still be, the Texas State record; too bad it took the three of them to get it in. This just shows you never know what’s going to take your bait and that you had better be ready.

The bottom line is watching what’s going on, having a plan that gets your bait presentation into the strike zone and having a good fighting strategy and the tackle to do the job may produce your ling of a lifetime. Use the tried and proven true rigging, baits and tackle as outlined, along with the fighting and gaffing techniques recommended. They will go a long way in assisting you to bring your ling of a lifetime to the boat and into the cooler—springtime, summertime and beyond.

Directions ring sauce pan to med high heat and add bacon grease, onion, garlic and pequin.

SautĂŠ until tender, then add butter and mushrooms. Cook until liquid reduces from mushrooms. Add flour and stir quickly to keep from sticking as a roux forms. Deglaze with wine and slowly add beef stock while stirring. Add seasonings and cracked mixed peppercorns to taste (I use extra on wild game). Reduce heat to med low, cover, and reduce liquid by half. It should turn darker.

In a cast iron deep skillet, heat on med high and melt lard. Spray each chop steak with duck fat spray, season both sides with TSS Jalapeno Dusted all-purpose rub, then add to skillet. Flip often adding more lard if needed to prevent sticking. When internal temp hits 165, pour mushroom gravy over steaks, cover, and reduce heat to med low.

Simmer, turning often until gravy thickens. Serve over mashed Yukon gold potatoes and a garden salad, or sliced avocado seasoned with TSS Jalapeno Dusted.

Reduce heat again to low. Adjust seasoning and cook another 30 minutes.

Prepare grill and skewer shrimp. Lightly brush shrimp with clarified butter and season with Coastal Seafood. Grill and set aside. When the sauce thickens, stir in shrimp, cover and cook 15-20 minutes stirring occasionally. Turn the heat off, leave covered, and let the shrimp continue to pull in flavor from the sauce while you prepare white rice or bread bowls.

Bunny was in a quandary as to how to start out the new year with her column. I had so many ideas, but they just didn’t seem right. I thought, well, lets start out this year with something sweet. So, forget your New Year’s Resolution of working out and losing weight, and enjoy these wonderful cookies. I went to my go-to friends that cook and bake all the time and got these EASY recipes from them.

Joanie’s Moms Swedish Tea Cakes/Cookies • • • • • • •

Steve’s Potato Chip Cookies • • • • •

Ingredients

1 pound butter softened at room temperature 1 cup sugar 3 cups flour 2 cups crushed potato chips ½ cup finely chopped pecans (use a mini processor if you can’t find chopped pecans at the store) • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Ingredients

½ cups butter ¼ cup sugar 1 egg yoke 1 cup flour 1 egg white, beaten ¾ cups chopped nuts (use whatever nut you like) Maraschino cherries (optional)

Directions

Cream butter and sugar together and then add egg yolk. Add the flour, mix well. Roll into small balls, and then dip into the beaten egg white. Then roll in the nuts.

Top each with a cherry. Bake at low temperature, 300 degrees for 10 – 15 minutes.

Note: These recipes can easily be doubled.

with Jan & D e a n Hi Jan and Dean. I am a 38-year-old male and have been divorced for about 3 years now. I wear glasses, and without them I am blind as a bat. My problem is that while dating I am fine because I can of course wear my glasses then. The ladies all seem to be fine with that.

The real problem begins when things turn romantic and intimate. I have to wear my glasses during those intimate times to be able to see anything. Seriously. I am blind without them. Me wearing glasses during intimate encounters seems to be a real turn off to ladies.

They won’t return my calls or texts afterward.

I don’t see anything wrong with wearing glasses while romancing but it seems to be a real negative with women. Please don’t say wear contacts because I have tried that and can’t tolerate them. What should I do?

All you seem interested in is putting on some night vision goggles and getting after it. I’m shocked that you would ever get a lady to the point to where she would even consider being romantic with you. Maybe you could just purchase one of those coal miners’ helmets where you could flip your light off and on. That would be quite the mood setter.

Billy Bob, you don’t seem to have a clue. Maybe you can “see” your way to becoming a more desirable man to women. Then maybe a few of them would return your calls.

Billy Bob, if you are legit, which I don’t think you are, I’ll still bite and give you an answer. I can be blunt just like Dean. Do you really need to see?

Honestly, by now you should know where everything is and go with the flow. Do you have mirrors on the ceiling? You seem like the type that might. If so, you can focus on them.

Goodness in action

Another day, another year. How will it be different than 2020?

i rst, 2020 was many things: stressful, trying, scary, terrifying, painful, etc., but not all bad. For all the pain and sadness, we also found that there is still a great deal of good in this world.

You only have to look at our Galveston Island family to see this goodness in action. Many Islanders, while being tested by the pandemic and the struggles of a weak tourism season (mainly due to the cancellation of our biggest seasonal events and COVID19 restriction on restaurants, bars, and music venues), we have found ways to support each other to keep the island going.

I would like this Reflection to shine the light on what it means to be thankful for what we have and how giving to those in need is a gift that makes the heart feel warm and happy.

The past 4 years, The Palms Condominium and its owners have taken a collection each year to donate to the Galveston County Food Bank. The amount donated equates to about 16,000 meals over the years. This year, with all the heartaches the county and our beloved city has endured, I worried donations might fall because so many people have been affected in different ways.

I was hoping to get enough donations for 4000 meals this Christmas season. I thought it would be a good idea to challenge a few businesses, which included ReMax Leading Edge and Sand-NSea Realty. To my amazement, we collected over $3000, which equates to 12,000 meals for the Galveston County Food Bank.

It seems the giving spirit is alive and well on the island, and I want to thank The Palms owners, Nikki Haley and her agents at RE/Max Leading Edge, and Jana Turner from Sand-N-Sea for participating in our holiday giving. It is truly a blessing to share with those who are less fortunate. Everyone mentioned helped make a difference this giving season.

My hope and prayer for this New Year is we Islanders continue to find ways to be “Kind”, “Charitable” and “Forgiving”. If we can do these things, I truly believe 2021 will be a great year!

erbs have been with us since the dawn of time. Given their ancient history, it is no surprise that a great deal of superstition has been attached to these mysterious plants with healing powers.

Rosemary for Remembrance

Rosemary was believed to ward off evil spirits and dispel jealousy. The frequent inhaling of the scent would retain one’s youth. The blue flowers get their color from Mary’s blue cloak that she laid on the bush while traveling to Egypt to save Jesus.

Thyme For Purity

Wherever thyme grows wild, it indicates a pure atmosphere.

It is also where fairies are said to play the most. Thyme was used to help the deceased to transition to the spirit world. A sachet of thyme placed under the pillow while sleeping was said to dispel nightmares and give positive dreams.

Twenty bedrooms, nearly all occupied at the same time, some families staying for only a day or two while others come for much longer visits up to a month or more in some cases.

If you have special skills, training, hobbies or speak any foreign languages, please come share with us…can you lead a group in singing along with your musical talent…can you teach the children to speak a few words or sing a song in your native or learned language…do you know a special dance (think “chicken dance” or the “cha-chacha” or “folklorico”) all children love to sing and dance. Karaoke is a favorite if you own a machine!

Duties that need to be done on a daily basis include acting as a receptionist and answering phone calls, preparation of rooms for incoming families, helping in the business office, cooking and baking, playing Bingo and hosting family activities as well as providing “arts and crafts” sessions. Host a party! Halloween, Christmas, Valentines, Easter, Birthdays…etc.
