What is Easter?

Easter is the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus from the tomb on the third day after his crucifixion, fulfilling the prophecy of the Messiah who would be persecuted, die for our sins, and rise on the third day (Isaiah 53). Remembering the resurrection of Jesus is a way to renew daily hope that we have victory over sin. According to the New Testament, Easter is three days after the death of Jesus on the cross. Easter follows a period of fasting called Lent, in which many churches set aside time for repentance and remembrance. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Good Friday, the day of Jesus’ crucifixion. The 40 day period was established by Pope Gregory 1 using the 40-day pattern of Israel, Moses, Elijah, and Jesus’ time in the wilderness. The week leading up to Easter is called The Holy Week, or “Passion Week”, and includes Palm Sunday (the day Jesus entered Jerusalem and was celebrated), Maundy Thursday (the “Last Supper” where Jesus met with his disciples to observe Passover), and Good Friday (when Jesus would be crucified on the cross). Easter is a very significant day within Christianity and is the foundation of the Christian faith. Jesus, the Son of God, fulfilled prophecy and through his death, has given the gift of eternal life in heaven to those who believe in his death and resurrection. Read the entire Biblical account of Resurrection Day in Matthew 28, Mark 16, and Luke 24.

Living A Faithful Life by Sandra Peoples His master said to him, “Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master”. Matthew. 25:21 There are attributes of God we can’t live out in our own lives. We aren’t omnipotent, omniscient, or omnipresent but there are others we can live out. We love because He is love. We serve because He sets the example and we can be faithful because He is faithful. One of my favorites stories of faithfulness is the friendship between David and Jonathan. In 1 Sam. 17, we read about David defeating Goliath. Chapter 18 introduces these two unlikely friends - the son of a shepherd and the son of the king: “As soon as [David] had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.” Jonathan went on to give David his robe, armor, and “even his sword and this bow and his belt” (18:4). But, Jonathan’s protection of David didn’t stop with handing over his possessions. At the end of chapter 18 we read how Saul felt about David, “But when Saul saw and knew that the Lord was with David, and that Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved him, Saul was even more afraid of David. So Saul was David’s enemy continually” (18:28 & 29). Saul became obsessed with killing David at this point but Jonathan continued to be a faithful friend. Jonathan first saved David’s life in 1 Sam. 19 when he warned David that Saul planned to kill him. Jonathan interceded by reminding his father of the good David had done. What’s remarkable to me about this friendship is that after Saul’s death, the throne would belong to Jonathan. Saul said to him, “For as long as the son of Jesse lives on the earth, neither you nor your kingdom shall be established” (v. 31a). Still Jonathan was faithful to David, knowing that it’s the Lord who puts kings on thrones, not bloodlines and traditions. The battles between Saul and David went on, as did the battles between Saul’s army and their enemies. In chapter 31, we read of Saul’s defeat and Jonathan’s death. “And the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons, and the Philistines struck down Jonathan and Abinidab and Malchishua, the sons of Saul” (v. 2). 2 Samuel starts with David mourning the deaths of Saul and Jonathan. He tore his clothes, wept, and fasted to show his grief. After Jonathan’s death, would David remember the vow they had made to each other? “Go in peace, because we have sworn both of us in the name of the Lord, saying, ‘The Lord shall be between me and you, and between my offspring and your offspring, forever” (1 Sam. 20:42). Could David be faithful to Jonathan even after his death? In 2 Samuel chapter 9 we find out. David asked, “Is there anyone left in the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?” (v. 1). A servant told David, “There is still a son of Jonathan; he is crippled in his feet”.

10

APRIL 2022

If we look back at 2 Samuel 4:4, we see he was crippled because his nurse took him and fled at the news of his father’s death. He fell and became lame. Jonathan’s son was dependent on others for his care. David asked for Mephibosheth to be brought to him. Mephibosheth came before the king and fell on his face before him. David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan, and I will restore to you all the land of Saul your father, and you shall eat at my table always” (v. 7). Verse 11 says, “So Mephibosheth ate at David’s table, like one of the king’s sons”. God did not forget Mephibosheth. He did not let David forget either. We can learn from God’s faithfulness to them and David’s faithfulness to his friend. Jen Wilkin writes, “Ultimately, every act of faithfulness toward others is an act of faithfulness toward God himself”. Like David and Jonathan, that can be in our friendships. It can also be in our marriages and other roles like being a daughter, son, sister, brother, church member, and employee. We choose to be faithful in dozens of ways. We can be faithful with our attention, actively listening to each other. We can be faithful in how we spend our money, honoring the budget we set with our spouses. We can be faithful in our time management, not neglecting time with others. There will always be temptations to be unfaithful. Unfortunately, we can’t turn on the news without hearing about broken relationships and broken hearts. But we can hold fast to our confession with hope without wavering - our hope in God and in His plan for our relationships. He who promised is faithful! God, thank You for the gift of the relationships I’m in. You are using us to make each other more like Christ each day. Faithfulness is a fruit of the Holy Spirit, and I want to grow in that quality. Please help me to be faithful in words, actions, and thoughts today. In Jesus’s name, amen. Virtual ‘Beat the Pack’ program to help people quit smoking offered at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is offering the community a proven program to help people quit smoking. The next four-week series is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. on April 6 on a virtual platform. The complimentary program, called Beat the Pack®, was developed by Pfizer Inc. and is sponsored by Houston Methodist Cancer Center at Sugar Land. Participants will meet virtually each Wednesday for four weeks during April with a trained facilitator who will provide tools, tips and support to help smokers create and follow through with a personalized “quit plan.” “Studies show that close to 70 percent of smokers in the U.S. want to quit,” said Amy Sebastian-Deutsch,

director of oncology and infusion services at Houston Methodist Sugar Land. “But it typically takes a smoker between six and 11 attempts to successfully quit. Beat the Pack is a proven program that can greatly increase those odds and make it easier to give up cigarettes for good.” Even long-term smokers can benefit from quitting. “The health benefits of quitting begin almost immediately and continue indefinitely,” said Sindhu Nair, M.D., board-certified hematologist oncologist with Houston Methodist Oncology Partners at Sugar Land. “Within months, former smokers will have improved circulation and reduced blood pressure, enhanced oxygen flow, the return of taste and smell and less coughing and colds. After a

year, their risk of heart disease will be reduced by half. After 10 years of living without cigarettes, the risk of heart attack or cancer is similar to that of someone who never smoked.” “It isn’t easy to quit, and certainly it is more difficult to do so by yourself,” said Sebastian-Deutsch. “Beat the Pack provides all the tools and support needed, and it does so in an informative, friendly atmosphere that offers encouragement and camaraderie.” The four-week program is offered quarterly at Houston Methodist Sugar Land. Registration is required and space is limited. For more information or to register, visit houstonmethodist. org/events and search for ‘quit smoking’, or call 281.274.7500.
