ere on the Gulf Coast, we’re all too aware that the arrival of fall doesn’t coincide with cooler tem peratures. We’re also veterans at mak ing what’s new in fashion’s favorite season work in our still-warm Septem ber—creative layering. As in all things, we understand the need to be flexible and enjoy having all the options. Fash ion insider and RISE boutique owner Mel Reynolds curated autumn’s newest looks on friends and local business women Mary Emily Davidson, Dr. Kathryn Dempsey, and herself. Supportive and stylish, they’re a group of women to emulate and I couldn’t have found a better trio for our cover. I am loving all the unabashed self-care ser vices I’m seeing everywhere I go. No longer seen as a guilty pleasure, from the lighter side of things like aesthetics to heavier topics like eating what’s good for you and taking care of your mental health, I’m thrilled women are embracing new attitudes (and local offerings).

The penultimate soirée prior to the lavish Vintage Affair Gala, the Grand Patrons’ Dinner was a smashing success. Generously sponsored by Lexus of Mobile and hosted by Mr. Herbert A. Meisler and Mr. and Mrs. Ben Meisler, this American Cancer Society fundraiser has become legendary in its own right. The sparkling event, held at the Country Club of Mobile, was carefully curated not only to thank supporters, but also to ensure guests learned a little and laughed often. Featuring guest speaker Dr. Caroline McGugin, a silent auction, wine tastings, a raffle for a diamond-encrusted bracelet from Zundel’s Jewelry, and much more, we’re already saving the date for next year’s festivities.

Quite fond of the color pink too, we’re shining a light on the local men fundraising for Mobile’s chapter of the American Cancer Society (ACS). Co-chairs Pratt Paterson and State Representative Napoleon Bracy, Jr. are leading South Alabama’s ACS chapter in this national campaign presented by 2022 title sponsor, Poarch Band of Creek Indians. We couldn’t be prouder of all of these distinguished leaders for using the power of pink to represent our generous community and to honor an all-too-common diagnosis. Every dollar raised will go towards life saving support such as a 24/7 helpline, patient transportation, and so much more.

A friendship based on fashion, art, and beauty is not only FAB, it proves common interests can be instrumental in creating meaningful and fun friendships amongst women. Each a master of their trade, Mary Emily Davidson, Dr. Kathryn Dempsey, and Mel Reynolds have become friends and brands in their own right. As we transition into fall, Access invited this enviable trio for a day of play at The Mobile Museum of Art in their special exhibition, FOR CHILDREN: The Elements of Art and Design. After all, what grown-up doesn’t get excited by a larger-than-life rubber duckie and enormous Legos? All great sports, the ladies share their stories, insider scoop, and the latest looks they’re crushing on now. The support they offer each other is not only joyful, but the very definition of self-care. As the curling wand and lashes flew about, our spirits were lifted just hearing them bounce from one topic to the next. From their passion for business and how they make it all work to complimenting each other throughout the day, they each make living their best life look oh-so-easy and oh-so-good. Like the song says, girls really do just wanna have fun.

ENHANCE WHO YOU ARE. SELF-CARE IS A WOMEN SINCE WE’RE ALL PROFESSIONALS, WE NEED TO BE TO CARE FOR LOVED ONES.”

MARY EMILY DAVIDSON

riginally from Mobile, Mel Reynolds’ fashion journey included many roads across the country. Returning to Mobile in 2019 with her husband Tony and Vivienne, their adored Cavalier King Charles Spaniel fur baby, the couple wanted to be closer to family. She also brought with her an unmistakable passion for fashion, a knack for getting it just right no matter a woman’s age, size, or comfort zone, and the personality and work ethic required to thrive in a business that’s anything but easy.
More than a store, Mel explains what sets her apart. “RISE provides quality items our clients not only love, but will reach for time and time again. Every piece is bought for versatility, maximum use, and to coordinate with another. We definitely take the sting out of searching for the perfect look by getting to know our clients and focusing on what they’re wearing in their day-to-day life. Whether it’s work, brunch with the girls, a wedding, or their next vacation, knowing our clients’ closets and preferences pays off for everyone,” she explains.
Proof she supports the women who support her, Mel adds, “Mary Emily isn’t just everything you want in a friend, she’s a total boss, period. I’m also a client of hers. She’s done my brows and lip blush which are a true time-saver. I love waking up made up! As for Kathryn Dempsey, I found out she’s the premier dermatologist in town because most of my local clients go to her for the many services she provides. Due to all the positive conversations, I became a client, too. She’s beyond brilliant and I love her aesthetic, her beautiful office space, and the way she cares for her patients. We instantly clicked and this is another example of women supporting women. These alliances are priceless.”
Mel knew fashion was the career path for her at an early age. “I stud ied business at the University of South Alabama before hitting the road to experience every facet of the fashion and retail industry. Wanting to learn the business inside and out, I worked in wholesale and high-end retail sales, buying, management, and more. Quite literally, all roads have led to RISE!” MelSo,explains.what is RISE? Located in Spring Hill, RISE is a top local cloth ing and accessories boutique, and the result of Mel’s hard work. “We carry sought-after designers and offer in-house styling services. Originally, we opened in 2019 as a pop-up concept to test the local market, and today we have a beautiful new permanent store in the recently renovated Spring Hill Village Shopping Center,” Mel tells us.

Having dressed countless women, Mel comprehends it’s not so easy, say ing, “We offer styling services because we understand the time constraints most women endure. We can pull looks together for any occasion, update older favorites with new pieces, and special-order items. It’s our goal to make it super easy to pop in, grab what you need, and go on with your day. We build relationships because we’re busy women too—we understand the pressure of wanting to look good with no extra time to spend!”
with her pristine store bursting with well-edited collections of must-haves that you’re guaranteed to cherish, we ask about her personal style. “It’s hard to pin down because I like it all! However, I suppose NYC street-chic would best describe it; most times, you’ll catch me in denim, pumps, and a white button-down shirt.”
As a prime example of building relationships at RISE, Mel recalls meet ing Mary Emily Davidson. “We met at my first pop-up in Mobile and shortly after that I went to her home for a closet edit. We became fast friends as she was rebranding her personal style to elevate her growing business. She’s also become an ally in the business world and we’re a constant support for one another. It’s so important to develop trusted relationships with women in business; we need each other!”
As for the merchandise, Mel tells us, “Through years of buying, research ing, and trips to various markets, I’ve honed in on incredible brands that meet my criteria: being women-owned, practicing sustainable manufacturing, us ing organic materials, paying fair wages, and never mass-produced. I also put a lot of thought into the clothes I buy. For example, I offer several Australian lines during certain times of the year. In the Southern Hemisphere, they offer really cool styles in fall colors and breathable materials that are perfect for our climate. Finding the right pieces for my local client base is ever-present in myFamiliarmind.”

From Mobile, Mary Emily opened Outliner Studio in 2018 after receiving extensive training around the globe. This isn’t the tattooed makeup of decades past. Her permanent makeup results are as naturallooking as they are flawless. “When done correctly, there’s no pain, zero-to-little downtime, minimal maintenance, and it lasts for years. Permanent makeup is non-surgical and the most modern and effective way to restore natural features. However, these results are due to the investment we have made in our training and how we care about our clients,” she clarifies.

With her sights set high, she has big plans. “This year, we’ve launched The Academy at Outliner Studio to teach others how to start a beauty business and the art of Permanent Makeup. It’s truly an honor to see my students succeed and we’ve created one of the most thorough training programs in the US,” Mary Emily tells us.
28
Diving deeper, Mary Emily adds, “Polished eyebrows are so im portant and make you look youthful and awake; a little enhancement will result in more symmetry and fullness. With age, I’ve lost my natu ral lip color and had to reapply lipstick often—it wore off quicker than my eyebrow pencil! My first lip blush treatment was a game-changer and wow, what a time saver. When I look in the mirror, I’m pleased at what I see—that’s the best feeling!”
As for their services? “We offer enhanced cosmetic and medical services through permanent makeup like Lip Blush, Permanent Brows and Eyeliner, Ultra Realistic 2-D and 3-D Areola Tattooing, as well as the most modern camouflage treatments for scars and stretch marks. I’m excited to announce we’ll soon launch new services such as Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) for hair loss,” Mary Emily shares.
M
Her personal branding approach? “Fashion and beauty allow me to bring art to my day. Putting in that little extra effort, plus having the right fashion guidance from Mel, makes me feel like I can really take on the day! While in healthcare, I didn’t have a good pair of jeans to my name! I met Mel when she opened RISE and from there, the fashion turned into friendship. She helped me build a wardrobe that not only fits well but also reflects how I really want to look. It’s brought me confidence, friendship, fun, and a better self-image. She’ll give you the shirt off her back—liter ally!”Admitting to following Dr. Dempsey on Instagram for years, she has now become a friend. “Kathryn is a true talent! Her cosmetic work is amazing and her patients that see me always have perfectly filled lips (never overdone), perfectly placed Botox, fabulous skin, and rave about her work! I love that our businesses are complementary and that I’ve gotten to know such a special and kind hearted person. I’m all about women who lift each other up and she does just that!” she shares.

Mary Emily’s motto? “Beauty, fashion, and art should enhance who you are. Self-care is a beautiful way to connect with other women since we’re all professionals, moms, students, and everything else we need to be to care for loved ones. Sharing these artistic experiences where we can be truly vulnerable and care for each other is an extension of who we are as women.”
ary Emily Davidson is not only wife to Jeremy and moth er to Ava June and John Morgan, she’s a pioneer in the beauty business. As the owner and operator of Mobile’s Outliner Studio, she’s growing her in-demand permanent makeup business by leaps and bounds. And she’s even developed a training program, too. Referred to as Rembrandt for the face, it may well be attributed to her Fine Arts degree with a concentration in paint ing and her experience in the medical field that brought her here.
With an artist’s touch, Mary Emily’s goal is for each client to wake up made-up. “Client satisfaction is why we invest extensively in our skills and education. We’ve brought the best and safest restorative Per manent Makeup techniques to this area and I’m so proud of our results, reviews, and feedback. I love the joy and surprise in my clients’ eyes when they see their results and hearing how we’ve made them feel more confident or restored from a traumatic experience, surgery, or in jury. They reignite my passion every day,” Mary Emily beams.

Always looking chic and fashionable, Dr. Dempsey claims, “If you peek in my closet, you’d see that I’m drawn to bright colors and bold pat terns. I love ruffles, sparkles, and anything with unique details. I think this is why I love dermatology, where it’s all in the details.”
Summing it up beautifully, Dr. Dempsey concludes, “I’m married to the most wonderful husband on earth. I wish for every woman to have, and know they deserve, a partner that lifts them up. I think kindness and confidence are the key ingredients for a beautiful and a rich life. If you can treat others in the way you want to be treated and feel good in your skin, you’re doing great, because nothing makes a woman more beautiful than the belief that she already is.” Old | 251.378.0200
As for her go-to-glow secrets she shares, “Photorejuvenation is my favor ite. It brightens and tightens the skin while improving texture and tone.” Con tinuing, she adds, “Laser hair removal has been life-changing since there’s no downtime—talk about a time saver! Not having to worry about shaving and ingrown hairs is everything.”

C
Expanding, she continues, “Like most women, I wish I could be five places at once. I try to live in the moment and practice self-care. When everyone is sleeping, I go to Village Yoga—it’s instrumental to my physical and mental health. My husband and I try to have a weekly date night, and recently I’ve taken a few weekend trips with my daughter and best friend to relax and have fun! It’s important to fill our cups, otherwise we have nothing to pour from.”
Her top treatment recommendations to consider during the cooler months include photorejuvenation for sun damage and HydraFacials to infuse moisture during these drier months. This is also the perfect time for treatments that re quire staying out of the sun for a period of time.
Smart as a whip, she graduated magna cum laude with high honors from Vanderbilt University and completed her residency at the Medical University of South Carolina. She even she served as chief resident during her final year and scored in the top 3% on the nationwide dermatology practice boards.
Naturally, she offers the services you’d expect from a top dermatologist, ranging from microneedling to Vbeam laser treatments to address those little red bumps, blood vessels and flushing. “I’m an expert injector and perform Bo tox, Dysport, and dermal filler daily as well as intense pulse light and fractional laser treatments. Crystal Hartley, our expert laser tech, also performs laser hair removal, photorejuvenation, chemical peels and more,” Dr. Dempsey tells us.
Naturally, Dr. Dempsey is a sunscreen advocate, sharing, “Sunscreens have come a long way. There’s no reason for anyone not to wear it on their face, neck, chest, and hands daily. It’s the most affordable and effective antiaging product around.” Coastal Dermatology offers a range of skin care products, but she believes it doesn’t have to be expensive. “I always build a personal stepby-step routine for my patients and suggest both drugstore and medical-grade products.”Dr.Dempsey also knows the importance of female camaraderie. “It’s im portant for us to build each other up. Being a woman is hard enough ” On her friendship with Mel Reynolds and Mary Emily Davidson, it comes down to one word, “Wow! I’m in awe of them. They’re incredibly kind, welcoming, person able, intelligent and beautiful. It’s so inspiring to see them enriching our community. I love that they’re both in the business of helping women look and feel beautiful—it’s the best!” she exclaims.
COASTAL DERMATOLOGY & SKIN CARE CENTER 5472
Relocating to Mobile with her husband Todd, the couple have two children, Annabel and Cullen, and Dr. Dempsey founded her all-encompassing skin center, Coastal Dermatology, in 2018. “I tell woman considering opening a busi ness to go for it and to have a support system, as it’s a lot of work and it truly takes a village. My husband, family, friends, lawyer, bank, billing company, accountant, and employees have been instrumental in my success,” she shares.
elebrated local dermatologist Dr. Kathryn Dempsey’s beauty is more than skin deep. Hailing from Dallas, her career path started at camp. “During medical school I worked at Camp Dermadillo, a place for kids with serious skin conditions. I fell in love with those kids and saw firsthand how people with skin conditions literally wear their disease for the entire world to see. From acne to skin cancer and genetic conditions, it became my mission to help everyone feel comfortable in their skin—it’s truly the most rewarding profession,” she says.

Well bless her heart, our own charming Southern influencer and contributing editor, Charlotte Kilborn Carey, explains just a few of our cherished traditions with those new to the area as it continues to grow by leaps and bounds. We think longtime locals will agree that these Southern staples have stood the test of time and bring a certain joie de vivre that’s unique to us. Since we can’t imagine it any other way, won’t you join us?

south of the Mason-Dixon Line have the repu tation of impeccable manners and boundless hospitality. This remains vital to our very existence. It’s only natural for us to welcome guests to our homes with full Southern regalia—it’s our love language. For example, holiday or not, outsiders must know we will pull out the family silver and china for most any occasion. When my father inherited his mother’s Limoges, he swore to use it every day and did just that. To us, this is a way to connect with and remem ber the past. Naturally, many busy hostesses will use their fine china even when serving take-out delicacies such as chicken fingers or barbecue. Don’t be alarmed, it’s just that Southerners agree everything tastes better when served on a silver platter.
A
s the Bay area welcomes new friends and fam ilies to our shores, I thought it wise to explain some of our signature behaviors and treasures to ensure our newbies are well-versed. For starters, it’s crucial to understand that Southern roots grow wide and deep and our pride is as strong as the mighty live oak branches draped in moss stretching across our land scape. Never too shy to show that pride, certain traditions have been passed down for so long we absolutely refuse to let them Residentsgo.

As many of you may have noticed, we will monogram anything. Guests will always find beautifully monogrammed linen (always lin en), guest towels in the bathrooms along with pretty little soaps nestled in porcelain dishes by the sink. Wildflowers Floral Design in Fairhope is a great source for these little treasures. Visi tors might think we’re all convinced that we’re the main character in The Princess and the Pea by the way we dress our beds. The higher the better, and if a small set of steps are required, you’ve done a fine job. Regardless of the heat, we pile on layers of blankets, coverlets and duvets over crisp ironed (and monogrammed) cotton sheets, complete with a triple fold at the top (those who know, know). Don’t even get me started on the massive array of pillows on top ranging from standard to Euro and everything in between—also monogrammed of course. Naturally, there’s always a bed skirt, unless you’ve chosen an upholstered bed frame, an other Southern obsession. To shop for sump tuous Matouk and Yves Delormes linens, try Eastern Shore favorite Living Well. My local go-to’s for monogramming are Bobbins De sign, Embroidery Tyme, and Missy Bradley.

Straw Company’s Traditional are equally delicious options. When I’m being a very good Southerner, I like to make my own and add nuts. I use Martha Stewart’s Cheddar Biscuits with Pecans recipe. She’d be Southern if she could, trust me.
Dressing up is another Southern specialty, and not just ourselves but our little cherubs as well. You may have noticed every Southern child is adorned in a smocked outfit. For us, this begins at birth and for girls, the bigger the hair bow, the better. Tiny Town in Mobile and Fairhope as well as The Holiday in Spring Hill are great sources for the perfect children’s outfits. Local legend Toodles Dorgan is the grande dame of handmade heirloom gowns. For the perfect chapeau to wear for a daytime Mardi Gras event or a sporty polo match, look no further than fave boutiques CK Collection and Debra’s, who bring the talents of milliners from across the country home so you can shop from the convenience of your neighborhood.

Not only do we love our seafood, we decorate with it, too. Lucky enough to be surrounded by nature’s treasures and with the “waste not, want not” mentality passed on to us by our grandmothers, we gild oyster shells, make seashell-framed mirrors, and craft Christ mas trees out of driftwood. Midtown Mobile shop M.A. Simons has a beautiful collection of decorative oyster shells to keep and gift. I even have a friend whose marvelous powder room walls are adorned with a whimsical collection of seashells. Speaking of decorating, you’ll find that toile is king down here. When chinoiserie speaks, we listen, and local company Southern Toile has taken it to the next level with their Mobile and Mardi Gras toile patterns. You can pick up these beautiful textiles at Five Gold Monkeys on both sides of the Bay, one for me and one for you.

In every Southerner’s pantry, I can guarantee you will find two indispensable staples—cheese straws and pralines. They are the “break glass in case of a visitor emergency” that a good hostess al ways keeps on hand. I’m very particular about both of these staples as I like my pralines crispy, not sticky, and buy them at the legendary Three Georges Candy shop in Mobile and the iconic Punta Clara Kitchen in Point Clear. I love a spicy cheese straw like the ones from Savannah Grace but Betsy’s Classic and the Mississippi Cheese

While there are too many to list, I hope this introduction to Southern culture explains a bit about our way of life. Naturally, I’d need endless pages to even approach Mardi Gras. But the point is that I wish our new neighbors well and hope they come to embrace some of our traditions which mean so much to us all. Later, y’all, and pray for sun or the next time I see you on the Pink Carpet it will be with Noah and two of every animal.

If you’re new to the area, it’s vital to understand that SEC foot ball is a way of life. We are true to our schools and dress the part, too. We represent team spirit right down to our attire, accessories, and serving ware choices. Weekend Waterford, aka Styrofoam or plastic party cups, emblazoned with your host’s team logo will serve you well if you’re invited to a game-watching event as hostess gifts are also a Southern tradition of the utmost importance. Fairhope’s Harvest Jewels even has the perfect mascot pendant to top off your gameday look and The Garage Studio has all the fun, school-themed cups and tailgating must-haves. It’s best not plan your wedding, or any event for that matter, on game day. If you do, guests will expect multiple big screen TVs or I promise the pews will be bare.

TOWARDSPROGRESSPERFECTION
It’s been five months since we introduced you to Matt and Amy McDonald and their Olde Towne Daphne dream-house-turned-nightmare due to termite infestation. At the time, brothers Jared and Geoffrey Cochran, co-owners of Cochran Builders, Inc., were working with their top-notch team to restore this pre-Civil War gem to its original glory, guided by prominent architect L. Craig Roberts. To say they’ve come a long way is an understatement.

THE HISTORICAL HOME IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY.

THE HOME AT THE START OF A COMPLETE RENOVATION DUE TO TERMITES.
et’s start with a short recap of what we learned last May. In 2015, Matt and Amy McDonald bought the bayfront CullumLee-Caffey home, a Gulf Coast Greek Revival cottage listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Three years later, termites had destroyed it. With different owners, the home might have been torn down and a new one built, but Amy and Matt were utterly committed to restoring their home to its original state. Hiring a dream team of the area’s best in architecture, building, woodwork, and more, the house was taken apart down to the studs and every historical detail replicated using expert craftsmanship and the same hand tools used by the original builders 175 years ago. This painstaking labor of love was undertaken with enthusiasm by builders Jared and Geoffrey Cochran, whose first and foremost task was ensuring all the termites and damaged wood were removed.

“At this point we’re in various stages of the ‘finishing’ process,” Jared says, adding, “Since Access last visited the site in May, we’ve made tremendous progress on the interior. First, we insulated the entire home with open cell spray foam, which provides the greatest value of all the forms of insulation, then we hung sheetrock and have since finished all of it. Our finish carpenters have been installing trim materials and working in concert with the hardwood flooring installers.”
No strangers to big builds, Jared and Geoffrey still love the challenge of overseeing a project where an entire house is taken apart and rebuilt to exacting historical detail. As always, they’re the first to ensure credit is given to both their team at Cochran Builders and the elite subcontractors working with them.

Fast-forward to the present, and we’re awestruck at the progress they’ve made. No longer a sea of studs marking the outline of what were once rooms, the interior boasts completed walls; temporary flooring is being replaced with golden antique heart pine; moldings and trim are being added, and the exterior is being prepped to be painted. Color us amazed at the transformation being wrought by these masters of their crafts.

SANDING AND PREPPING OF THE EXTERIOR OF THE HOUSE ARE CRUCIAL STEPS TO ACHIEVE THE PERFECT FINISH WHEN THE PAINTING PROCESS BEGINS.

Like conductors of an orchestra, it’s their job to ensure their team and the other contractors on-site are keeping perfect time together so that none is wasted. Geoffrey adds, “We’ve also begun sanding and prepping the exterior of the house so we can start the paint process.”

Sincehome.”so much of the original floor was damaged by termites, they were only able to salvage enough for the floors upstairs. Jared adds, “Fortunately for us, Zach Deas was able to locate a trove of old antique heart pine beams, which he then processed into the flooring that we’re installing throughout the first floor. Finding such materials is not an easy task and we really appreciate the efforts Zach made for us to keep the historical nature of this process alive.”
Deep appreciation is also extended to those who have been on the project since day one. Jared declares, “Barry Easterling and his crew of men at B & B Construction have absolutely been the backbone of our workforce. Because of the historical nature of this project, we had to take it apart literally piece by piece and put it back together in the same fashion. This is wearisome and sometimes backbreaking work. Barry and his men understood the importance of this project and have executed this task flawlessly without a single complaint—a rare quality these days!”
Calling project manager Skip Jones their ringmaster, Geoffrey says of him, “Skip has been in the trenches with these guys, managing the chaos of multiple subs, material deliveries, and making sure that our homeowners’ wants and needs are being met. It truly takes a team of craftsmen to pull off a project like this, and all these gentlemen are exactly that!”
More praise for Deas Millwork comes from Geoffrey, who claims, “The moldings in this home aren’t something we could purchase at any local building supply store. Luckily for us, Deas was able to come through again. We saved pieces of the old moldings and Zach actually made the knives to cut new material to match the original. Jared and I knew when we took on this project the importance of having a company like Deas Millwork. Their contribution to this restoration has been massive and we could not have accomplished it without the unique machinery and talented people working there.”
“BARRY EASTERLING AND HIS CREW OF MEN AT B & B CONSTRUCTION HAVE ABSOLUTELY BEEN THE BACKBONE OF OUR WORKFORCE. BECAUSE OF THE HISTORICAL NATURE OF THIS PROJECT, WE HAD TO TAKE IT APART LITERALLY PIECE BY PIECE AND PUT IT BACK TOGETHER IN THE SAME FASHION.”

Geoffrey shares, “Greg Maddox with Maddox Custom Cabinets & Millworks Inc. has begun the tedious process of building all the furnituregrade cabinetry throughout the house at his shop off-site. Wrapping up, Geoffrey has a few final thoughts, telling us, “Projects like this are not common. In fact, they’re very rare. This has been the most challenging endeavor our company has engaged in by far. We are blessed to have such a wonderful team of talented men and women who have risen to the occasion and exceeded every expectation we had for them.” Jared concludes, “It’s also important we mention our gratitude for homeowners like the McDonalds, who understood the immense challenge we faced and trusted us to make this happen. Matt and Amy McDonald have been outstanding clients and have fueled this project not only financially, but with the confidence they have placed in us. It’s easy to work for people who trust you and your team—that’s why this project is going to be a huge success!” See you at Thanksgiving!
48
Spending their summer battling excessive heat and unprecedented amounts of rain, the crew also had to deal with supply chain issues that, since the pandemic, have become a become a daily problem for all of us. Nonetheless, Jared claims, “Our timeline is to have the McDonalds back in their home by Thanksgiving; I think that is very doable.” Home for Thanksgiving sounds good to us.

If we could bottle the Fairhope experience, Jubilee Suites on Mobile Bay is more than a contender. The pristine waterfront inn offers more than one can imagine and guarantees those staying, hosting, or attending an event at this local gem are not only satisfied, but somehow leave happier, fulfilled, and recharged. Checking in with owner Dana Maloney, the ultimate innkeeper, she opens up about fulfilling her “home-suite-home” dreams.

BLISS 50
Knowing many of us have dreamed of creating a fabulous Airbnb (and even mentally

decorated it), this couple has actually done it. With no shortage of hard work and headaches, the result is a luxury bed and breakfast situated on 200 feet of beachfront property overlooking Mobile Bay, suites with breathtaking views, a New Orleans-style courtyard and fountain, a chef’s kitchen, inspiring grounds, and so much more that it must be seen to be believed.
Asked what inspired this journey, Dana shares, “I think it was all about creating a home away from home. I’ve had such a transient lifestyle and never forgot how good it felt going to my Grandmother Edna’s home when I was growing up. She was always happy to see us and had wonderful food and fresh flowers waiting for us when we arrived—it was magical. When we settled down in Charlotte to raise our three boys, I loved meeting people and making them as comfortable and happy as possible.”Inspired by her grandmother, Dana is also a natural hostess. “I get a lot of joy out of feeding people while giving them a place to relax and transition from a stressful life

to a happy vacation. We like doing family reunions, corporate and wellness retreats, and there’s nothing like ‘heads in beds,’ an endearing term for our overnight guests. Often, our guests come at random and we strike up these wonderful conversations. Before you know it, we’re all friends. These accidental connections are the magic I was hoping for,” she beams.
We’re curious about the property’s history, and Dana tells us, “We didn’t know it for a long time, but this property was a ship workers’ hotel during World War II and underwent many revisions. After the war, it was taken apart and sold to a man who trucked it, piece by piece, across the Bay and put it back together with the help of family members, even the little kids. It took eighteen months as they built smaller buildings to live in while they put the original
I
t could be the natural beauty that engulfs the property, the flawless Southern hospitality, the fluffy bedding, or the smiles of happy people coming and going that make Jubilee Suites a place you want to be. Access staffers have spent time on-site and we still can’t pinpoint exactly what makes it so special. But there’s no doubt friends have been made, spirits lifted, and it is indeed a special place—much like Fairhope itself.Owned and operated by Jim and Dana Maloney, who spent most of their lives in Charlotte, North Carolina (also a hospitality city), we ask for the details as to how they found Fairhope. “Our daughter-in-law, Maegan Maloney, is from Mobile and her family had property in Fairhope. We came to Fairhope to meet her parents and she showed me this particular property. She knew I would love it, and I obviously did because I bought it!” Dana tells us.
As for their renovations, Dana reveals, “We took possession in January 2018 and opened just a few months later in March. We’ve updated and painted everything and replaced the appliances, plumbing, and electrical systems. It’s safe to say that since opening, we’ve pretty much had a steady stream of projects! But we still have plenty more in mind and it’s been fun watching it all come together.”

Able to comfortably accommodate 35 guests overnight, they’ve hosted writing retreats, wellness events, corporate team building retreats, and intimate weddings, family reunions, bridal showers and more. Jubilee Suites has been the chosen set for television specials due to the absolutely stunning common spaces, both indoors and outdoors. Picture a long dining table adjacent to a wall of glass doors framing a magnificent view of Mobile Bay, doors that open to the outdoor balcony with seating for friends and family, all just off the dream catering kitchen.
As for the divine accommodations, each sun-filled suite boasts a private entrance; full kitchen stocked with coffee, tea, and condiments; washer and dryer and laundry supplies; individual air conditioning units; fresh flowers, and both books and art by local artists available for purchase. Most are family and pet-friendly, too. “I’m partial to the three

Regarding that professional staff, Dana hired their Experience Manager, Christy Wells-Fritz, to ensure they’re able to serve clients in the manner intended. An energetic jack-of-all-trades, Christy quickly becomes that friend you can count on. “Guests can look forward to our home-cooked breakfast every morning and requests are welcome, including catered private dining options. served her well. “My motto is ‘There will be miracles.’ So many times, when I’ve thought I couldn’t get through something, I let go and then a miracle happened. The night I met Christy, I thought, ‘Oh, my gosh, I’d love to have her as my manager.’ It took me a year, but she’s been with us for three years now. It’s been a lot of wanting something, and when it seems like it won’t happen, I let it go and again and again, things work out for the best. Miracles do happen.”
with the businesses of Fairhope that send us business, and in turn, we send them business. We put certificates called ‘Jubilee Jacks’ in each suite that guests can redeem at several local businesses downtown. I currently budget $5,000 a year to give back to the community with this program and feel Fairhope could develop this on a greater scale. We also put a Jubilee Suites shopping bag and apron in each room with a bowl of candy—that just makes everyone happy!”
56
Asking what’s surprised her most since opening, Dana states, “The relationships between our guests. Many have nothing in common except for happening to be here at the same time. They end up developing friendships and continue seeing each other when they leave. There’s just something about being on vacation at a place like this that allows you to put your guard down and open up with others. Recently, we went to St. Louis and saw two former guests along the way.”

WHEN PASSION MEETS PRACTICE
58
There’s no question we live in interesting times. Some may describe it as information overload; advancements are happening faster than we can keep up, causing many to tune it all out. However, the team at Women’s Health Alliance of Mobile (WHAM) is on the frontlines of women’s healthcare, right where they prefer to be. Not only does this accomplished team of physicians have decades of experience, each are engaged in related passion projects that include breastmilk banks, groundbreaking medical trials, and preventive care awareness. What’s more, Drs. Susan Vance, Brittney Laughlin, Ted Catranis, and Jessica Jones are dedicated to combining the best of the future and the past through educating women and forming meaningful long-term relationships with their patients.

VIP treatment? Sign us up! Dr. Jessica Jones relates, “This collaborative approach to health care benefits patients and doctors alike,” adding that building long-term relationships with patients is the goal here. “Women’s healthcare is missing continuity. Gone are the days where you had one

What touched us most perhaps is that while they each have a distinct passion and personal ity, one fact is crystal clear—women’s health is more than a job to each of them. While Dr. Laugh lin is outgoing with a smile for all, Dr. Vance is straight-talking with a sharp sense of humor, and both make WHAM a place you want to be. Dr. Catranis is as witty and personable as Dr. Jones is kind and caring, and all are whip-smart and pride themselves on working as a team to deliver the best possible care.
oing to the OB/GYN isn’t necessarily every woman’s favorite thing to do unless perhaps she’s expecting a baby. However, stepping out of the eleva tor and into the world of WHAM, most women’s stirrup anxiety fades away as she’s greeted with warm faces in a comforting and well-designed space clearly created for women.
DR. SUSAN VANCE
A founding member of the practice, Dr. Vance is renowned for her diagnostic and surgical skills, but her gaze is also squarely focused on all women having access to excellent healthcare, transitioning generations of families from birth through menopause. She declares, “I find myself embracing menopause, with its own unique issues, as never before since I can now totally relate to this phase of life with my own experiences. I only practice gynecology now and I’ve been told I’m a good ‘gyne-chiatrist.’”
Talking with this team of doctors isn’t just en gaging, it’s fascinating. Bursting with facts and special interests, it’s hard not to be overwhelmed by their passion. Yet, this is exactly what you’d hope for. This is especially true in a time where many women are choosing to focus on their aes thetics rather than what may be happening on the inside. But the WHAM team wants women to have both—and to never compromise their whole health. Why?

Interestingly, there’s a nationwide short age of women’s healthcare providers, especially in the South, and when we toss in how the pandemic lockdowns resulted in women putting off preven tive screenings and exams designed to catch con ditions before they become major medical prob lems, some experts say we’re in crisis.
If this describes you or someone you know, the doctors at WHAM are not only here to help—ex pect to receive a gentle nudge from them if you’re behind on your screenings. Offering complete services for gynecology, obstetrics, preventive health, fertility, surgery, and ultrasound, this OB/ GYN practice is committed to providing the high est level of compassionate (and judgment-free) care for women from adolescence to post-meno pause. So why not choose a team with a complete understanding of women’s health to start?
G
Drs. Susan Vance and Britney Laughlin were two of the practice founders, and they’re in lock step concerning WHAM’s goals, with Dr. Laugh lin saying, “Our mission is always to provide pa tient-centered care, treating all patients uniquely according to their individual needs. We consider our patients part of our family.” And their skilled and caring staff is equally dedicated. Dr. Vance adds, “Our goal is also to provide an optimistic work environment for our team members, whom we also consider family. They understand the im portance of working in a concerted effort to pro vide VIP treatment to all of our patients.”

DR. BRITTNEY LAUGHLIN

Dr. Laughlin has multi-faceted passions for helping women. One is securing breastmilk for infants in NICUs by working with The Mother’s Milk Bank of Alabama. Her goal? “To spread awareness about this organization so one day they’ll have such a surplus that any mom can receive donor milk. ”Another is her interest in helping women struggling with both infertility and high-risk pregnancies. “Women facing either of these challenges need to feel supported and heard. With three obstetricians, the doctors recognize the unique aspects of every pregnancy and work with their patients to address their goals, provide safe and healthy outcomes for moms and babies, and ensure that the patient and her partner have a trusted resource in their provider throughout their pregnancy. Dr. Vance notes, “Working with our dedicated staff, we provide patient-centered care while also offering the necessary support for highrisk or complicated pregnancies. Personalized, at tentive, and supportive care is vital to a positive experience throughout a pregnancy.”

Patients feel heard. Our delivering physicians still deliver their patients’ babies if humanly possible, rather than relying on who is on-call that day.”

Acutely aware that women often put their health last, Drs Laughlin and Vance concur, with Dr. Laughlin remarking, “We all have a tendency to care for everyone else first, then if there’s time left we consider our own health.” She’s compas sionate but firm, saying, “Women should always keep up with annual exams, especially with their primary care provider and OB/GYN. Many condi tions can be prevented or diagnosed before there’s a major detriment to her health. I hate to see some one turn 50 and the wheels just start to fall off!”
Since we’re addressing all women, let’s address the younger ones, too. Dr. Jones says, “I enjoy practicing adolescent gynecology. Girls between the ages of 12–21 are a subset of medicine that are often overlooked—it’s an incredibly important time of development and I hope to improve ac cess to care for them. We now recommend a first gynecology visit be between the ages of 12–15. During this visit, we focus on discussing the phys ical and emotional aspects of puberty and discuss developing healthy relationships and coping mechanisms.” With a guardian present, Dr. Jones will also answer any questions or clear up miscon ceptions regarding unwanted pregnancy, normal
If you’re one of the many who postponed their annual exams, we promise the doctors at WHAM aren’t going to lecture you. They genuinely want to help women, not shame them, and they do so with the heart of a teacher. Dr. Ted Catranis shares, “Education is power, and we pride our selves on educating our patients on the impor tance of understanding their bodies and topics such as preventive medicine and ensuring their cervical, breast, and colon cancer screenings are up-to-date. We also provide bone density screen ings for those in the appropriate age range.” But it’s more than preventive medicine; they also ex plain exactly what they’re doing and why they’re doing it. For example, an annual exam is much more than a Pap smear to check for cervical can cer. He states, “Beyond preventive medicine, pa tients with a medical condition leave us with a comprehensive understanding of their diagnosis and their treatment plan.”

When faced with the prospect of surgery, it’s comforting to know all of the physicians are highly skilled laparoscopists and vaginal surgeons and they strive to offer the least invasive surgical options available, including those for urogyne cological procedures and pelvic floor operations. Additionally, Drs. Laughlin and Catranis are expe rienced in robotic surgeries.

A founding member of the practice, Dr. Vance is a renowned for her diagnostic and surgical skills, but her gaze is also squarely focused on all women having access to excellent healthcare, transitioning generations of families from birth through menopause. “I find myself embracing menopause, with its own unique issues, as never before since I can now totally relate to this phase of life with my own experiences. I only practice gynecology now and I’ve been told I’m a good ‘gyne-chiatrist,’” she says.

A prominent OB/GYN and experienced laparoscopic and robotic surgeon, Dr. Catranis is an ally for women. Since 2007, he’s been the chair of the Alabama Baby Coalition (ABC), a campaign for healthier babies in Mobile. “ABC’s Fetal Infant Mortality Review program’s purpose is to understand how a wide array of factors relate to infant loss on a local level. The goal is to enhance the health and well-being of women, infants, and their families through recommendations for improved community resources.”
Dr. Catranis is heavily invested in the Alabama Baby Coalition, a campaign for healthier babies in Mobile, and has been the organization’s chair since 2007. “Each year, about 100 babies in Mo bile County die before birth or in their first year of life. The Fetal Infant Mortality Review program’s purpose is to understand how a wide array of fac tors, from social to economic to environmental, relate to infant loss on a local level. The goal is to enhance the health and well-being of women, infants, and their families through recommenda tions for improved community resources and ser vices,” he claims. “Connecting grieving families with each other and also with local support agen cies is another important aspect of the work we do.” And, if that’s not enough, Dr. Catranis is also a Principal Investigator for manufacturer-spon sored clinical trials. Working with the nation’s best and brightest, their goal is to seek answers about and solutions for difficult conditions such as

What’s striking is that all four doctors are not only highly skilled, they go above and beyond to serve their community, not just their patients. For Dr. Laughlin, it’s securing breastmilk for babies who need it most. She shares, “WHAM’s office is one of 17 donor milk depots for The Mother’s Milk Bank of Alabama. Women selflessly donate breast milk for those neonates and sick infants in NICUs in Alabama and across the country. My goal is to spread awareness so this organization will one day have such a surplus that any mom can receive donor milk. Our depot is the only one in Mobile, as well.” Dr. Laughlin also focuses on helping women struggling with infertility and also those with high-risk pregnancies. She says, “From initial evaluations to treatment, women struggling with infertility need to feel supported and heard by their physician. I extend the same support and my expertise to women with high-risk pregnan cies. Both of these situations can be scarily vul nerable times and it’s my job to make them feel as safe as possible.”

Meet licensed medical esthetician Aimee Lee, one of the newest practitioners at Alabama Medical Group’s (AMG) growing aesthetics program. Prioritizing glowing outcomes for her patients, Aimee is also keen to educate them on further improving their skin at home, making her a new go-to when it comes to looking as young as we feel. Additionally, she’s a devoted wife, mom to three teenagers, and a photographer, illustrating to us all that we do have time to wash our face before bed. We spoke with Aimee about her career, family, and the services she expertly provides.

Challenges she faced with her own skin were the catalyst for Aimee to become a licensed medical esthetician. The more she learned, the more she was convinced this was her calling. But don’t think it was easy. “Education is always the best way to start in any field, so I was adamant about starting from the bottom and working my way up. The long days of classes and long nights of studying while raising children weren’t always easy, but I’m thankful I had the opportunity to learn and truly understand skin before jumping into this industry,” she claims. After completing a 14-month education course, she sat for her state boards and passed with flying colors. “I was (and have been) employed as a licensed esthetician in a medical setting since graduating five years ago, which is an accomplishment in itself, considering how competitive this industry is and how limited these positions are in our area.”

If you’re one of the lucky patients seeing Aimee, you already know this is the first thing she’ll ask you, and it’s not so she can lecture you regarding its importance—it’s part of meeting people and gently teaching them about caring for their skin. “Individualized treatment plans are vital for each patient’s success,” she says. “Further, I ask what they hope to change about their skin and their end goal. From there, I physically examine the treatment area and develop a game plan. My objective is for patients to feel confident they’ll not only look better when their treatment is complete, but also be educated about at-home skincare maintenance.”
Aimee has always put family first. Originally from New Iberia, Louisiana, she says, “I was born in Cajun Country, where family, faith, and food are at the top of our priority list,” she laughs, adding, “I’ve lived in Mobile for nearly 30 years, but my Cajun heritage is part of who I am.” After graduating from McGill-Toolen Catholic High School, Aimee attended the University of South Alabama before getting married and starting a family. “I’m a wife, mother, esthetician, and photographer. My husband, Jonathan Lee, is a Captain with the Mobile Police Department and the owner of THP Solutions, a security consultation company. Together we have three teenagers: Jackson, Alex, and Emma Grace,” she shares.
Alabama Medical Group’s growing aesthetics program allows Aimee to demonstrate her superior skill set and share with us the value of the services offered. Her unmistakable passion for her work and care for her patients is on full display when asked what she loves best about her job. “Too many things to count! I really love my patients. It’s not uncommon for someone to be teary-eyed during their initial consultation, and I have the privilege of watching their confidence level rise and their smiles get a little bigger each time they walk through my door,” she tells us, sweetly adding, “Little did they know they were beautiful all along—it’s just my job to help them see it. And when they finally do? Well, that’s my favorite part of the journey.”

ALLĒ AND ASPIRE REWARDS PROGRAM
One of my favorite treatments, mainly for the correction it allows me to do on scarring, fine lines, and wrinkles. Additionally, it promotes collagen production and is wonderful for tightening skin and improving texture. It’s rewarding to watch a patient leave my office with newfound or restored confidence after a series of treatments.

Laser is my favorite! With such a wide target range, we’re able to correct multiple concerns—unwanted hair, unwanted pigmentation (brown or red!), loose skin, acne, broken blood vessels, and even facial bruising. Although there is usually a little downtime, it’s minimal.

We love offering our patients a chance to save! Allē and Aspire are free programs where members receive special offers and earn points on products and services including Botox, Latisse, SkinMedica, Juvéderm, and Dysport.
SCITON BBL TREATMENTSLASER
A quick and easy procedure without any downtime; it can be done alone or as an add-on to any service. Removing vellus hair and dead skin cell buildup can make a huge difference in the skin’s appearance. Not only does it feel amazing, it also allows products to soak in more deeply and can promote a better result when coupled with procedures like microneedling, chemical peels, or laser.

Skinceuticals, Skinbetter, Lira, and Elta are worth the investment. I’m a firm believer in good skincare and it starts with sunscreen. some cases. At AMG, we have peels ranging from superficial to medium-depth and are able to target acne, minimize pore size, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, smooth texture, and balance (or even remove) pigmentation.
All cosmetic injections must be performed by a doctor, but I’m happy to educate patients on any questions they may have, as I’m not only knowledgeable, I’m also a huge fan of injectables!

CURATIVE CUISINE

70
We’re getting too comfortable with our comfort food. Homemade mac and cheese, fried chicken, and your grandma’s buttermilk biscuits are sentimental Southern favorites for a reason—it’s when those dishes are our only source of nutrition that health problems can arise. No one’s is saying not to indulge in some rocky road when the going gets tough, but USA Health’s Robert Israel, MD, FACP, is here to explain that changing the way we cook and eat will positively impact our lives in ways Ben & Jerry’s can only dream of. What’s more? The teaching kitchen at his practice will train you to make nutritious meals that will aid your overall health without sacrificing flavor.
The longer he practiced, the more he became aware of how lifestyle choices affected health outcomes. “What I’ve found is that eight of the top 10 causes of death in the United States are lifestyle-related in
And Dr. Israel isn’t suggesting anything as drastic when we speak to him. Indeed, he laughs at the notion. “The first principle we teach is that food needs to be delicious; If it doesn’t taste good, then why would anyone but an ascetic eat it? One of my favorite teachers here says he wants his food to be unapologetically delicious and nutritious at the same time, and it is possible,” he affirms. The same goes for encouraging movement and exercise; it needs to be fun or at least pleasant and enjoyable for most people to do it.
“LAST NIGHT, I SETTLED IN TO WATCH TRUE CRIME ON NETFLIX WHILE DEVOURING A BAG OF RAW SPINACH,” ONE EVER...

one way or another. While we have great medications for all of those diseases, we can’t do it all through medication. We need to do it with lifestyle modification, which includes nutrition, exercise, and other techniques.” he declares.
Sought after for his diagnostic and treatment skills in the more traditional role of medicine, he was ahead of his time in many ways. “I always thought that integrative approaches to health were much more effective and tried to use those when I could, but I didn’t do it very effectively for many years,” he admits. “Our approach was a negative one—don’t do this, don’t do that. it wasn’t very appealing and was hard to sell because it was punitive and unpleasant. In retrospect, I wouldn’t have wanted to do what I tried to tell patients they needed to do, either.”
While we’re on the subject, we ask what “integrative approach” means. Dr. Israel fills us in. “Integrative medicine utilizes traditional medicine (such as pills, surgery, and physical therapy) and also factors in nutrition, exercise, meditation, massage, mindfulness, and yoga, all applied in an individual way with the patient at the center,” he says. “It’s mind-body-spirit medicine and defines health not as the absence of disease but the best possible state for all three of those areas.”
The phrase “food as medicine” wasn’t around until about 20 years ago, which is when Dr. Israel began to see evidence-based studies (with scientific backing) that a more effective approach to healthy lifestyles would benefit patients. He tells us, “I was lucky enough to stumble

Treating the whole person and not just their disease has revolutionized healthcare, and for good reason—patients are seeing better outcomes for their diseases and improvements in other areas of their life, as well.
In over 40 years of practicing medicine, Dr. Israel has seen it all, and learned from it, too. It’s evident he loves his career and his patients. He’s charming, quick-witted, and we immediately feel at ease with him. Spending time with his wife, three children, and four grandchildren brings him joy, and his favorite pastimes are fishing, travel, cooking and eating, hiking, and good literature. An Alabama native, he grew up the son of a small town family doctor, but wasn’t sure he wanted to follow his dad into medicine. He smiles, saying, “I tried hard not to want to be a doctor, but in college I couldn’t find anything else I had any aptitude for doing, so I went to medical school, where nutrition wasn’t a big topic. We learned about drugs, medications, and diseases, so I started out like most of my peers 40 years ago, tackling disease and trying to stamp it out. That approach made it difficult to promote health. Back then, health insurance only paid for disease treatment. It wasn’t health insurance at all—it was disease insurance.”
depression, and mental illness—not the usual bailiwick of internists. He’s not elbowing in on his psychiatrist colleagues; he’s simply noting what science has proven. “The mind-body connection is real and there is plenty of scientific research telling us that both mood and anxiety improve when diet and lifestyle are improved, particularly reduction in processed food and sugar intake replaced by whole food intake,” he says. It goes without saying (but we will anyway) to consult your doctor if you want to stop taking a medication, but the point remains that making better lifestyle choices will only help you if you wish to do so.
“Culinary medicine is a very simple concept. It’s teaching people to eat food that’s healthier than what they’re accustomed to—and also learning it tastes better that way.” Bon appétit!

“WE’VE SEEN MANY PATIENTS TURN THEIR PRE-DIABETES AROUND AND THEIR BLOOD SUGAR RETURN TO NORMAL, OTHERS HAVE REDUCED THEIR NEED FOR BLOOD PRESSURE MEDICATION AND OTHER MEDICATIONS, AND IN ADDITION REPORT AN OVERALL IMPROVED SENSE OF WELL-BEING,”
More proof it works? “We’ve seen many patients turn their prediabetes around and their blood sugar return to normal, others have reduced their need for blood pressure medication and other medications, and in addition report an overall improved sense of well-being,” he states.
When you look up Dr. Israel online, one of the first things you notice is that he’s an internal medicine doctor and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. The second is that he treats anxiety,
Help is at hand for those who can’t cook or might need to learn new cooking techniques, those who don’t know what ingredients to buy, and (maybe most importantly) those who want to enjoy eating what they’ve prepared. The USA Health Culinary Medicine Program’s teaching kitchen provides all that and more. A part of the Teaching Kitchen Collaborative (TKC), a prestigious global network of almost 50 teaching kitchens, TKC uses the latest research to guide students in the best way to improve their condition through culinary medicine. And the classes are fun! Our short visit was punctuated with smiles from the friendly and highly trained staff and immediate answers to questions we asked.
onto a medical meeting that combined Harvard MDs and scientists and chefs from the Culinary Institute of America where I was exposed to the science and to the great tasting food they were proposing to use as medicine—literally food as medicine. This lightbulb moment changed the way I talked to my patients about their choices and I’ve pursued this approach ever since.”Dr. Israel has been the driving force in the USA Health Integrative Health and Wellness Program, which advocates a patientcentered approach to care. His practice houses the teaching kitchen where patients from throughout the USA Health system (and students at the medical school) learn the best foods for their condition and how to cook them so they’re healthy and delicious. He shares, “Culinary medicine is one arm of the integrative approach that uses evidence-based techniques to teach people the necessary skills to plan and prepare delicious and nutritious meals for themselves and their families. A small change from the traditional American diet to a healthier diet (that tastes better anyway) can have very big impacts on health, to the tune of 30% reductions in diabetes, hypertension, cancers, and other illnesses.”
As is true for most things in life, personal experience played a role in Dr. Israel’s passion for healthy and delicious food. “Southerners like a good meal and I’m no different. I like to eat food that tastes good, so it became crucial for me to eat healthy food that I like,” he concludes.

system that provides primary and behavioral healthcare for an area with over 1 million people, with 45,000 patients across Alabama. They provide a full continuum of care devoted to children including outpatient, residential services, hospital services, and school-based therapy. With countless services available, their Baldwin County Community Alliance (BCCA) team was proud of their recent partnership with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office during their School Resource Officer (SRO) Training. The BCCA provided DetectaChem kits for all the Baldwin County SROs, offered training and resources, and a presentation on the effects of THC and CBD on the developing brain by Dr. Christina Talerico. The officers were able to ask questions and gain helpful knowledge to share with parents when a student’s e-cigarette tests positive for THC or CBD. Knowing help can be hard to find and an overwhelming process for parents, we’ve provided a guide of what’s available to this community. And remember, help is just a phone call away.
In session for close to a month, back to school simply isn’t how most parents remember it. While we’ve mastered school supplies, uniforms and carpool confusion, it’s important to tune in to our children’s mental health, too. Why? Whether it’s public or private school, our children are faced with stressors most of us didn’t encounter. Not always obvious or something our kids are comfortable sharing with parents, our friends at AltaPointe tell us what today’s kids face at school, symptoms they may be struggling with emotionally and how parents can care for themselves when difficulty strikes.
ountless factors impact our youth’s mental health, ranging from exposure to gun violence to oh-so-controversial social media. In 2020, the leading cause of death among children aged 1–18 was by a firearm. Exposure to so many traumatic events can take a heavy toll on a child’s mental health, whether they en counter it personally, see it on the news, or hear about it through friends. AltaPointe Health clinicians say it is imperative that parents and children have an open line of communication, not only to keep kids out of trouble, but also to build a healthy home life. AltaPointe understands the struggle our teenage girls are having when it comes to social media. The best thing parents can do is to monitor and supervise their children. Parents should be on the lookout for signs including disruptive sleeping patterns, gain ing or losing weight, or dropping grades. These are all obvious signs that something is going on.

Getting help isn’t something to be embarrassed about or ashamed of. If anything, we come out stronger when we get help and everyone needs support at some point.
Built on partnerships with local school systems, these programs provide a structured therapeutic classroom environment for elementary, middle, and high school students who struggle in a public-school setting and allows them to meet their educational and treatment goals under one roof. Each classroom has a teacher, a therapist, and behavior support staff that work together to meet each student’s needs. Psychiatric assessments, medication management, family therapy, and case management services are also readily available. They also offer day treatment programs during breaks and after school hours to maintain consistency and treatment progress.

Project Achieve provides outreach and family services for youth with multiple-needs that have been dually diagnosed with mental illness and intellectual disability. Services include supportive therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, systemic family therapy, behavior modification, social skills training, play therapy, and expressive therapy during the two-hour afterschool program.

We’re so fortunate to have a facility like BayPointe in our own backyard. There’s no other inpatient psychiatric hospital for children and teens in our area. BayPointe’s acute hospital unit provides a caring and secure environment where children and adolescents receive the stabilization they need during a time of crisis. A full psychiatric assessment, daily therapeutic programming, and family support services are provided, along with discharge planning and follow up appointments for continued success. BayPointe also operates an intensive residential program for long-term treatment of children and adolescents who cannot thrive in the home or a community-based setting.

PEACE, LOVE & PEONIES
For your interiors, crotons have distinct and colorful leaves, bringing fall colors like warm yellow, orange, and red into your space. Find a spot near a window—they like full sun to partial shade—to get the most vibrant leaf colors. A tropical plant, crotons need moist (but not muddy) soil, so water regularly. They take a 3-12 fertilizer, heavier on the nitrogen, an element required in excess by crotons.

Growing plants indoors can greatly reduce the level of toxins in the air, and crotons actually made NASA’s list of the top 50 best air-cleaning plants. They do this by absorbing pollutants into their leaves, which their root system transforms into nutrients for the plant. They also emit water vapors that help the plant pull polluted air to the roots, converting it into plant food. Further, they release fresh oxygen back into our home. Come see us and get some fresh air—both shopping at our market and to bring home nature’s air scrubbers.

Potted mums for porch decoration are best placed where they’ll get at least six hours of sun a day and they will need water daily if they aren’t exposed to rain. For a longer blooming season, deadhead dried flowers as needed. All of our mums have a six-month slow-release fertilizer incorporated into the soil. If you’re planting them in the ground, fertilize them in the spring, when new growth emerges. Mums brighten up your surroundings and bring a smile to your face. Japan’s national flower, mums are so beloved there that September 9th has been National Chrysanthemum Day and the Festival of Happiness for over 1,100 years!

Hello!
As summer is winding down and the blooms in your garden are starting to fade, we see the first chrysanthemums bursting into a rainbow of blooms. Here at Stokley’s, we offer a wide variety of colors, including some tri-color combos (three colors per pot). We have shades of yellows, bronzes, reds, pinks, purples, and white. You can use them either as decoration for porches and patios or plant them in the ground. Since they’re a perennial, they will come back and bloom readily every year.

is to instill lifelong habits in my clients that will eliminate debt for the rest of their lives. While saving money is essential, you shouldn’t pay off debt in exchange. I work with clients to get them to the point where they’re able to save 15–20% of their income. With that savings, we build a life event fund with approximately six months of living expenses to cover those unexpected events. Once in place, we then work towards paying off debt. This eliminates the hamster wheel effect and clients are encouraged rather than defeated. Many people feel 15–20% is a lot, but once accustomed, most admit to not even missing it. And the long-term rewards of doing so are incredible.

Until Next Time, Justin Law
In these ever-shifting financial times, many people feel they’ve got it all figured out while others go into a complete fog hearing a financial term. Always able to break down the lingo into simple terms, Justin Law, MBA, with Strategic Wealth Specialists is fluent in finance. Here, he opens the vault to share some insight into the savings vs. debt topic. Our takeaway? The financial world is complex—let Justin handle it!
Naturally, not all debt is the same. There’s good debt like a mortgage on a home or investment property and even business loans, as they typically go up in value. Bad debt like credit cards, car loans, and student loans do not go up in value and tend to weigh people down. My goal is to lessen the bad debt and determine the best way each client should pay down the good debt. For example, a client with a 30-year home mortgage may think it wise to change to a 15-year mortgage to pay less interest. However, there are many moving parts and much to consider because they could be losing out on a better financial opportunity since interest on a primary residence mortgage is a tax deduction. Or, if a client has a low interest rate it might make sense for us to roll the bad debt into the good
onventional wisdom suggests aggressively paying off debt versus saving money. I’ve found this approach doesn’t always work as most of us inevitably face unplanned life events such as a rotten roof, blown appliances, or even a costly illness. Imagine one of these expensive events happening just as you become debt-free? Back into debt you go. Going between debt-free and in debt is what I describe as the hamster wheel effect. It’s demoralizing and leaves people feeling defeated and wondering why bother.Myapproach

is, there are many ways to build wealth. What’s essential to understand is we all have a limited time to earn and build wealth, and wealth-building tends to happen in three stages—accumulation, growth, and takeoff growth. This is known as the compound curve. Interestingly, if a client saves correctly for 30 years, in a fixed situation, a third (33%) of their wealth could be built in the last five years—that’s the takeoff phase. While it’s never too late to get started, the longer you wait shaves valuable time off the takeoff period. For example, say a client saves $30K per year for 30 years with a 7% return, they will have $3 million for their future. If that same savings occurred over 25 years, it’s cut to $2 million. In conclusion, planning for your future is my priority and together we can make educated decisions that will dramatically improve your outcome.

Greetings!

writing this for Access, it’s fitting I mention General Manager Jaimie Hilyer’s role in saving their party. During the middle of the incredible and elaborate 50 Most Beautiful party, we were hit with a massive downpour. The drinks were flowing, the music was pumping, and the energy was electric—then Bam! Our building got struck by lightning, causing our overhead speakers to go silent. Jaimie immediately figured out a solution and got her hands on (seemingly out of thin air) a speaker loud enough to make it seem like nothing had happened. In a matter of moments, the dead air was filled with our usual playlist of high-energy hits. She’s our hero for good reason, folks.

We look forward to seeing Mobile stop by the bar over the next few months and enjoy all of the drinks, food, and events we have to offer. Football season is back and all of us at The Outsider couldn’t be more excited!

Football is back, and none too soon, as The Outsider Sports Lounge is open and more than ready to help you cheer on your favorite team with televisions in every possible line of sight. Owner Matt LeMond gives the floor to Bar Manager Connor Blake, who fills us in on what to expect in this expansive venue, as well as telling the story of the night the music (almost) died.

We love sports so much we added it to our name here at The Outsider. And we’re the first to admit football tops our list of favorites, like it does for most us here in the land of the SEC. We’re thrilled to host fans of all teams for our inaugural football season. We’re providing a massive selection of games to watch on our 22 televisions to ensure everyone will have access to cheer on their favorite team. Want to take in the cooling temps? We’re opening a window to our patio to allow our guests the option to have bar service while enjoying the weather and also have televisions placed there so no one has to miss a single down.
Cheers!

We’re going to be playing every Alabama, Auburn (War Eagle!) and LSU game every Saturday and fully intend to be packed full of fans and families pulling for their favorite teams. While we’re focusing on SEC teams, we’ll absolutely change a TV nearby to your preferred team if they’re playing. We don’t discriminate against the other divisions (much). One thing I love about The Outsider is how spacious it is. We can’t wait to have 200-plus cheering fans rooting on their teams. We’re open at 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday for the early games, so come spend the day with

By Sydney Wasdin
Hello,!
Take care of you ,, Mama!
Integrated healthcare is quickly becoming the norm. As patients are learning more about the better outcomes achieved through treating the person, not just their disease, they’re wanting patient-centered care. Sydney Wasdin, owner of True Yoga + Therapy in Daphne, is an advocate for all patients to receive care that takes into account their mental and physical health.
Mental and physical health are deeply intertwined and share a reciprocal relationship—a concept that’s not accounted for within the traditional medical model. Put simply, what affects one affects the other and they influence one another. Mental health is affected by physical health conditions, and physical health can be impacted by psychiatric health. We see this come up as cognitive decline and emotion dysregulation in patients with chronic pain, neurological conditions, autoimmune conditions, and more. We can also see this in the effects of trauma on the brain in a neurological and neurobiological sense. “Big T” and minor, complex trauma changes how your brain itself operates, causing nervous system dysregulation, which manifests in symptoms of mental or psychiatric

positive side of this interaction is how we can see that good mental health can positively impact treatment outcomes for illness such as cancer and offers new hope for people learning how to manage their health conditions, resulting in better quality of life, overall degree of life satisfaction, and resilience. Therefore, next steps needed within traditional healthcare settings are better incorporating all disciplines, including mental health, in a patient’s treatment for any medical condition. This will improve not only the health outcome, but also the client’s coping and functioning throughout treatment, as well as mitigate medical trauma that occurs due to the treatment and diagnosis itself.
How can mental health do better to incorporate physical health into our practice? In mental health, we have a call to better work with other providers in that cross-disciplinary treatment team approach, reinforce recommendations and also be mindful to do our research to ensure we understand potential effects our clients may face for their mental health. We need to get training of our own and educate about the mind-body interaction, incorporating different modalities and professionals within treatment for our client’s presenting issues as well. I created my practice with this intention by incorporating yoga for mindful movement and meditation and have added a licensed dietician to my team to work from her perspective with our clients to understand and change their diets towards what’s needed to manage their physical health as well as their mental health, all while developing a positive and hopeful relationship with food and their bodies.

The Integrative Health Model is a whole-body approach to the understanding, treatment and prevention of medical conditions of all kinds. This means a stronger call for comprehensive treatment team approaches and cross-disciplinary collaboration between healthcare providers for better quality care and health outcomes. With new societal demand and curiosity aligning with the research, we have a push for more from commonly disjointed healthcare systems and protocols across specialty areas.
