There’s a moment every spring when your spirit lifts and your mind starts to wander to family vacation ideas. It's that time.

Pack up your minivan, roll down your windows to take in some of that Memphis sunshine, and follow our recommendations for family-fun.

MEMPHIS ZOO With over 3,000 animals, including a pair of giant pandas and a family of polar bears, the Memphis Zoo is often ranked as one of the best in the nation, according to TripAdvisor. A popular spot for residents and visitors, the zoo is centrally located in Overton Park. It’s unique not only for its broad of range species, but also its size. Like Memphis, the zoo is not too big or too small. It offers visitors enough to see in one day, but not so much that the experience overwhelms. Over the past few years, the zoo has made an 4 | DISCOVER

effort to expand its exhibits, including the popular sea lion show, which families can catch two times a day; “Teton Trek: A Tribute to Yellowstone National Park;” and “Animals of the Night,” a rare look at nocturnal animals in the United States.

THE PEABODY DUCKS The Memphis Zoo isn’t the only place in town with animals. The Peabody Memphis is well known to many visitors as one of the most historic hotels in the South.

They also know it as having one of the most unique traditions of any institution.

Every day the Peabody Ducks, a small group of mallards, make their way down from the hotel’s rooftop to spend the day lazily swimming around the hotel’s grand lobby fountain. Guided by the Peabody Duck Master, the ducks receive royal treatment, including a red carpet and international paparazzi (mostly hotel

guests). Incredibly charming and good fun, visiting the Peabody Ducks when they march to (11 a.m.) and from (5 p.m.) the lobby fountain is one of the best ways to spend an hour in Memphis.

PINK PALACE Parents who make the effort to take a day off from work to spend with their kids know that the zoo or even the Peabody Ducks are not enough. It’s a good thing, then, that Memphis offers families a few other options to fill up their day. One of these options is the Pink Palace. The former home of Clarence Saunders, the founder of supermarket chain Piggly Wiggly, the Pink Palace offers a massive collection of historic, scientific and technological attractions. But what keeps people coming back is the Palace’s planetarium and CTI 3D Giant Theater, the only one in the Mid-South.

MUD ISLAND RIVER PARK For those families that need more than inside entertainment, Memphis’ Mud Island River Park is an excellent alter-

native. The park gives people the chance to rent bikes, canoes, kayaks or even paddleboats to use on the island or into downtown. And in the summer months,

when the nights are still cool, families can rough it by camping out under the stars next to the mighty Mississippi.

Your Guide to the 2022 International Blues Challenge

For over 35 years, the Memphis-based Blues Foundation has hosted the International Blues Challenge (IBC). The challenge builds in communities around the world, where affiliate blues societies host regional competitions to crown their strongest talents. It’s these regional winners who are invited to compete in the IBC, making it the world’s largest gathering of blues musicians—routinely involving more than 200 bands, solo acts and duos. Get down to Beale May 6-9, 2022 to hear some of the greatest blues musicians from around the world.

You don’t have to be a groupie or a blues scholar, or spend a lot of cash, to listen in to the IBC. But for beginners, the simple tips that follow go a long way.

WHEN & WHERE TO LISTEN Quarterfinals Night 1: The volume cranks up, and crowds swell, as the days of the challenge rock on. If you’re looking for a low-key experience, the International Showcase on opening night makes a good orientation—not only to the IBC, but to Beale Street. This is your chance to hear how musicians from Australia to Colombia to Italy interpret the blues, and to experience 10 different Beale Street venues where they’ll be performing.

Quarterfinals Night 2: Head to various venues up and down world-famous Beale Street to see the genre's best compete for a spot in the IBC finals. All you’ll need is a wristband, available for purchase on Beale Street, to hop between the host venues.

Youth Showcase & Semifinals: Sunday of the IBC promises to be the busiest on Beale and inside its clubs. Get an early

start with the Youth Showcase. Musicians ages 21 and under will perform for a room of talent scouts, journalists and you, as long as you arrive in time to nab a seat and a wristband. And with that, you might as well stay for the night’s semifinals.

Finals: Doors open early for the grand finale event at Memphis’ historic Orpheum Theatre—no club-hopping required. Tickets are available at the door on a first come, first served basis.

Between sessions, you'll be able to visit The Blues Foundation's Blues Hall of Fame. Any casual blues fan or music-lover will want to make this part of their Memphis itinerary.

Delta Heritage Center Sends Two Songwriters to Tennessee Songwriters Week Semi-Finals

Twenty area songwriters competed this past Saturday, February 5, at the Delta Heritage Center in Brownsville, hoping for a shot to play The Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. William Anthony Canaday and Terry Bell took top honors and will advance to the semi-finals in Memphis February 22.

"We didn't really come to compete," says Canaday, "We're about to release the song and I just wanted to get some audience feedback and a feel for how the people react to it. Needless to say I was encouraged and now looking forward to making it all the way to the Bluebird."

Canaday grew up in Brownsville and began playing the guitar when he was 12. It wasn't long after that he began his songwriting journey. Considering himself a lifelong student of the guitar and music, he says the hook for the song, “The Crossroads”, came to him years ago while learning to play Stevie Ray Vaughn's “Cold Shot”. Stanley Crouse accompanied Canaday.

This was the first time the duo played the song in public. When asked to describe the style of the song, Canaday says he considers it a hybrid country Blues tune.

Terry Bell, a contractor from Covington, began playing the guitar in his 20s and became inspired to write songs of his own about four years ago. He credits the Bible for most of his inspiration and gives God the credit for putting friends and family in his life who are encouraging and supportive of his musical endeavors. Bell chose to perform one of his newest songs, “Angels and Demons”, for the judges. It is a country-style song and he was accompanied by an additional guitarist, Will Reeder.

"I am so grateful to be chosen to represent rural West Tennessee in this songwriting competition," says Bell. "To even get a chance to play at the Bluebird has been a dream of mine for years. I will accept the opportunity and the blue ribbon, but I give God all the glory."

Judges for the event included Brownsville Arts Director and vocalist Achana C. Jarrett, University of Memphis - Lambuth musicologist Dr. Jeremy Tubbs, music producer, radio personality and performer Jazzii Anderson, and musician, songwriter and producer Billy Weir. Songwriters were judged based on their overall performance, originality and connection to the audience.

Canaday and Bell will perform alongside winners from other West Tennessee qualifiers during the semi-finals February 22, at Lafayette’s Music Room in Memphis. The semi-final showcase winner will advance to the Bluebird Cafe, in Nashville, as well as receive a one-year membership in the Nashville Songwriters Association International and a branded commemorative guitar.

A state statute designated the last full week of February each year as Tennessee Songwriters Week. The mission of the initiative is to support music venues, generate awareness of songwriters’ contributions to Tennessee, pave the way for future artists, inspire travelers to experience the state’s music stories, history, attractions and venues, and drive revenue for music venues devastated by the pandemic.

The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development partners with The Bluebird Cafe, NSAI, music venues and local convention and visitors’ bureaus, chambers and partners across the state, all committed to make sure songwriters can share their original work onstage with other writers.

Leaders Education Foundation to Award $20,000 in West Tennessee Scholarships

Leaders Education Foundation, a non-profit 501c(3) started by Leaders Credit Union, is pleased to award $20,000 to graduating high school seniors. The Leaders Education Foundation Scholarship Program will award scholarships of various amounts and requirements to high school seniors attending an accredited college or university.

Scholarship applicants must be graduating high school seniors in West Tenn. and the high school senior, a parent and/ or a grandparent must be a member of Leaders Education Foundation or a member in good standing of Leaders Credit Union. Applicants must be accepted or enrolled into an accredited

four-year bachelor’s degree program at a college or university in the United States.

The number of likes and shares does not directly determine the winner.

There’s Something for Everyone at Benton County Trade Days

2021 saw a lot of challenges as many businesses were finding themselves closing their doors, a parcel of unused land and a hobby turned into an idea that quickly has caught on in Benton County and is drawing people in from all around. Conveniently located just one mile from exit 126 off of Interstate 40, Benton County Trade Days has made its' home in Holladay, Tenn., just south of Camden.

Owner Stacey Ellis said that she wanted to do something to help people in the area have a place to sell homemade goodies, crafts, yard sale items, and more.

"I wanted to create an outdoor event for families to enjoy and explore. Benton County is known for its 30-mile yard sale event on Labor Day also I have always enjoyed this event. I enjoy going to flea markets because you never know what you will find. That's when I came up with the idea of an outdoor flea market once a month. We had land that wasn't used that was in a great location.”

“After a few months of thinking about it and worrying if any vendors would come, I decided to run with it.

I told myself, "If you build it they will come,"” and that's when the Benton County Trade Days Outdoor Flea Market was created. "We have a great group of vendors," Ellis explained. They have become more like family to us. I rely on their input and advice to make our location the best. Many have done flea markets for a very long time, whose experience has helped me so much. I am grateful for how all this has come together. This is a family-friendly event, and is family-owned."

2022 looks to have even bigger monthly events as news spreads and more vendors join in.

The Trade Days Outdoor Flea Market will re-open on March 10, 11, and 12.

The spring through fall schedule for 2022 includes the following weekends: March 10, 11, and 12; April 7, 8, and 9; May 12,13 and 14; June 9,10 and 11;

July 7, 8 and 9; August 11,12 and 13; the September date will be set once the 30mile yard sale dates are decided; October 6,7, and 8; November 10,11 and 12.

A few of the monthly vendors that are there include Wedding Overstock, Metal Yard Art, a Petting Zoo, hand Made crafts, Twisted Dough Bakery, OneStop Signs, Circle A Farms, Wood Weaver, and Girly Country Designs.

Ellis is always ready to welcome new vendors to the growing Trade Days Family. "All vendors are allowed to come in on the day before the big weekend each month and set up," Ellis said in describing the Trade Days process.

"Gates open to the public at 8 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. Booth sizes are 30 x 30, the booth rent covers all three days. LORETTA’S SNACK SHOP The newly renovated rustic themed diner offers a great variety of food selections, drinks, ice cream and even handmade milkshakes. There is indoor seating to escape from the heat and outdoor seating for those who want to enjoy the scenery.

CUMBERLAND RIVERWALK Cherry trees, sunshine, and spectacular river vistas make the riverwalk a top spring destination for both residents and visitors.

Bring a picnic and find a table or bench along the 2-mile meandering walking trail. A new section on the north end will open later this spring.

The next construction phase includes a pedestrian bridge over the Red River, ultimately connecting the trail with the Clarksville Greenway.

CLARKSVILLE GREENWAY This 9.3-mile paved trail is perfect for every age. Bikes, rollerblades, and pets on leashes are welcome on the scenic trail which parallels the Red River. It’s also abundant with native species of plants and animals, so you may want to enjoy a swing or bench along the way. Access the trail from Heritage Park, Pollard Road and Mary’s Oak Drive. You can also rent b-cycles at the Pollard Road trailhead.

The Story of Music City

THE BUILDING OF MUSIC CITY Nashville’s earliest settlers celebrated in the late 1700s with fiddle tunes and buck dancing after safely disembarking on the shores of the Cumberland River.

Nashville’s first “celebrity,” the noted frontiersman and Congressman Davy Crockett was known far and wide for his colorful stories and fiddle playing.

As the 1800s unfolded, Nashville grew to become a national center for music publishing. The first around-theworld tour by a musical act was by the Fisk Jubilee Singers from Nashville’s Fisk University. Their efforts helped fund the school’s mission of educating people who were formerly enslaved after the Civil War – and also put Nashville on the map as a global music center. In fact, upon playing for the Queen of England, the queen stated the Fisk Jubilee Singers must come from the “Music City.”

In the 1930s, not far from Fisk University, Jefferson Street was quickly becoming a hub for entertainment, music, and nightlife. Speakeasies, supperclubs, dance halls, nightclubs, and more could be found along the popular road, home to Nashville’s rhythm and blues scene. In the 1960s, Jimi Hendrix and Billy Cox held a residency at Club Del Morocco on Jefferson Street, and Nashville is the city Jimi credits for teaching him how to really play. The 1960s also saw the likes of Otis Redding, Little Richard, Etta James (the live Etta James Rocks the House was recorded at the New Era club in Nashville), and so many more play and sing in the clubs lining the street. Jefferson Street is credited with the emergence of Nashville’s R&B music.

HISTORIC VENUES The most famous music venue in Nashville, the Ryman Auditorium, was

built in 1892 when riverboat captain Tom Ryman completed what was originally named the ”Union Gospel Tabernacle”.

When it opened it was the largest auditorium south of the Ohio River. It is nicknamed the “Carnegie Hall of the South” and attracts musicians and fans from all over the world. The Ryman has received Pollstar magazine’s prestigious “Theater of the Year” award seven times in the past 10 years as the best auditorium in the nation to experience live music.

The Fisk Jubilee Singers were one of the first musical concerts in the building which was renamed in honor of Captain Ryman after his death in 1904.

The Ryman was managed by Lula Naff from 1904-1955 and she booked the top musical acts of the era in the building including Marian Anderson, Caruso, Sandra Bernhardt, Louis Armstrong, John Philip Sousa, and Nat King Cole.

It was Lula Naff in 1943 who brought DISCOVER | 37

the Grand Ole Opry (which started in 1925) into the Ryman every weekend where it stayed until 1974. Country Music Hall of Fame stars Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, George Jones, Dolly Parton, Charley Pride, and Elvis all performed at the Opry on the Ryman stage for the first time.

In 1925, the establishment of radio station WSM and its launch of the broadcast that would be called the Grand Ole Opry further secured Nashville’s reputation as a musical center and sparked its durable nickname of Music City. The Opry, still staged live every

week, is America’s longest-running radio show, in continuous production for more than 90 years. It ignited the careers of hundreds of country stars and lit the fuse for Nashville to explode into a geographic center for touring and recording. The modern-day empire of Music Row, a collection of recording studios, record labels, entertainment offices, and other music-associated businesses, populates the area around 16th and 17th Avenues South.

In December 1945 when Bill Monroe played his mandolin at the Ryman with Lester Flatt playing guitar, Chubby

Wise on fiddle and Howard Watts on bass a new musical genre of bluegrass music were created on the famous stage.

Banjo player Earl Scruggs later joined the group.

Today the Ryman celebrates 125 years as one of the most famous concert venues in America where stars who normally play arenas and even stadiums perform in the 2,362-seat venue. The long list of famous Ryman performers includes Bruce Springsteen, Garth Brooks, Paul Simon, The Foo Fighters, Aretha Franklin, Jack White, James Brown, Neil Diamond, and Diana Ross.

The Ryman is also open for daily tours where visitors can stand on its famous stage, watch a film of the history of the building, view clothes of Opry performers, and see Ryman memorabilia.

HOW THE LEGACY CONTINUES Nashville has also long been known as the “Songwriting Capital of the World.”

Songwriters from all over the globe come to Music City to learn the art and share their passion for songwriting. The famous Bluebird Cafe showcases songwriters performing their original music in an intimate “in the round” setting that was created in Nashville and allows them to share the stories of the inspiration behind their songs. Nashville Songwriters Association International, NSAI, which fosters the art of songwriting and works to protect artists’ rights, is headquartered here. The annual Tin Pan South Songwriters Festival puts these songwriters somewhere they’re not used to being, in the spotlight. Over the course of five days, more than 300 songwriters perform at venues around town.

In recent years, cable television has broadcast Music City’s stars and music to the world. CMT has taken country music to a new level of acclaim and recognition.

After ABC had the initial run, CMT

saved the Nashville TV show and became its new home for the last two seasons with much of the show filmed right here in Music City, achieving worldwide popularity. The gospel music series hosted by Nashville’s Bobby Jones on Black Entertainment Television was cable’s longest-running program. Bobby Jones Gospel came to an end in 2017 after 37 successful years.

Nashville has also become a hub for pop, rock, bluegrass, Americana, jazz, classical, contemporary Christian, blues, and soul music. Rolling Stone gave Nashville the title of “Best Music Scene.”

Artists like Robert Plant, Kid Rock, Black Eyed Peas, Bon Jovi, and Michael Buble, among many others, have come to Music City to write and record. Names like Kings of Leon, Justin Timberlake, The Black Keys, Keith Urban, Michael McDonald, Keb’ Mo’, Sheryl Crow, Paramore, Hot Chelle Rae, and Jack White have chosen to call the Nashville area home.

Nashville is home to United Record Pressing, North America’s largest volume producing vinyl record plant. Opened in 1949, United Record Pressing has pressed vinyl records for everyone from Miles Davis, Bob Dylan, and The Beatles to Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, and Ludacris.

The Schermerhorn Symphony Center, home to the renowned, GRAMMY award-winning Nashville Symphony, anchors the downtown end of the recently designated Music Mile. The Music Mile is a symbolic stretch of roadway connecting the Symphony Center with the music district of Music Row, the vibrant new entertainment venues on Demonbreun Street, the Frist Art Museum, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, the Music City Walk of Fame, and the Bridgestone Arena. The Music Mile perfectly illustrates how the music of Music City is indeed a common thread throughout the business, cultural and entertainment sectors of Nashville.

Scenic Waterfalls in the Putnam County - Upper Cumberland Area BURGESS FALLS STATE PARK Pictured above, this park is known for its sheer bluffs, narrow ridges, rolling water and abundant mixed forest. The area is on the National Register of Historic Places. There was once a gristmill, sawmill and powerhouse on this site. The park is home to over 300 species of trees, plants and an abundance of wildlife, including the white-faced grey squirrel. Visitors can enjoy the large Native Butterfly Garden, fish and hike the 1.5-mile round-trip loop to see four waterfalls on the Falling Water River, the tallest being 136 feet.

CUMMINS FALLS STATE PARK Cummins Falls State Park is an idyllic, but rugged, 211-acre day-use park located nine miles north of Cookeville on the Blackburn Fork State Scenic River on the Eastern Highland Rim. Located in the Cordell Hull Watershed, the area has been a scenic spot and

swimming hole for local residents of Jackson and Putnam counties for more than 100 years. Cummins Falls is Tennessee’s eighth largest waterfall in both volume and height. It was also voted the 6th best swimming hole in the nationby Reader’s Choice Magazine.

ROCK ISLAND STATE PARK Rock Island State Park is an 883 acre park located on the headwaters of Center Hill Lake at the confluence of the Caney Fork, Collins and Rocky Rivers. The rugged beauty of the park includes the

Caney Fork Gorge below Great Falls Dam. These overlooks are some of the most scenic and significant along the Eastern Highland Rim. Great Falls is a 30 foot horseshoe cascading waterfall,

located below the 19th century cotton textile mill that it powered over 100 years ago. Rock Island became a Tennessee State Park in 1969.

Our area local artists bring the essence and vitality of Knoxville’s spirit to life in painted murals, artwork, sculptors and photography displayed throughout the city. Be sure to stop in Glitterville Studios, where some of Oprah’s “favorite things” are made.

The Knoxville Museum of Art celebrates the art and artists of East Tennessee. The KMA presents an engaging schedule of exhibitions and is home to Richard Jolley’s Cycle of Life, one of the largest figurative glass-and-steel assemblages in the world.

Every First Friday of the month, experience a growing number of galleries and venues throughout the city that feature a variety of artists’ displays and live music. Downtown anchors include The Art Market, The Emporium, and the downtown Visitors Center – all conveniently located on Gay Street. Stroll, sip and shop throughout the evening!

FOOD & DRINK Knoxville has more than its fair share of culinary arts as well. With a heavy focus on locally sourced foods, Knoxville’s unique culinary scene is shaped by a group of talented chefs including Tennessee’s first James Beard Award Winner: Joseph Lenn. Lenn is the owner of J.C. Holdway and is one of several Blackberry Farm chefs who operate restaurants in Knoxville. Chef Matthew Gallagher, known for Knox Mason, also operates Emilia, serving Italian inspired cuisine in a crisp atmosphere. Knoxville is also home to Lonesome Dove, a Western Bistro operated by celebrity chef and University of Tennessee grad Tim Love.

Foodies would be remiss to not experience some other unexpected Knoxville flavors. For Knoxville’s version of hot chicken, go see Miss Jackie at Jackie’s Dream. She always serves with a smile and a handshake but make no mistake - hot is hot! Yassin’s Falafel House not only claims some of the best Middle Eastern cuisine around, but has also been recognized by Good Morning America as the “Nicest Place in America”. You’ll be sure to get your shawarma with a smile!

The city is also building a name for itself as one of the best craft beer towns in the Southeast, a place to relax with some of the country’s finest beers and finest people – hop on the Ale Trail and taste for yourself! From Hefeweizen in a German castle (Schulz Bräu) to experimental brews in a glass-blowing studio (Pretentious Craft Co.), you’ll find plenty to whet your whistle. Knoxville is also home to a few stops on the Tennessee Whiskey Trail, so be sure to have a sample at Knox Whiskey Works and Post-Modern Spirits.

HISTORY & HERITAGE As the first capital of Tennessee, Knoxville is proud of its heritage and committed to preserving it. Many visitors come to Knoxville to learn more about Civil War sites in our area, and tour earthworks, battle sites and historic homes. The East Tennessee History Center holds the key to Knoxville’s past. Built for the 1982 World’s Fair, the Sunsphere stands 266 feet tall with 26 stories and is topped by a 75-foot gold-colored, glass-paneled sphere.
