W

ithout missing a beat, and since the Bay area is in still in celebration mode with the return of Mardi Gras, we’re shifting right into wedding season. And oh, what a season it is and will continue to be as more weddings than ever before are projected for 2022. We’re excited about this wedding issue in particular, as each story is deeply personal and the effects of the pandemic shutdown are more than evident.

For many of the featured couples, acknowledging and honoring each other and family members (past and present) had priority over glitz and glamour. As editors, we sifted through so many touching stories that it was hard leaving some on the cutting room floor, but feel the love shared at these joyous occasions comes through loud and clear.

We found it touching that each bride made a point to mention how much they love their groom and how their wedding and marriage was about his happiness, and not theirs alone. It’s not uncommon for weddings to get so big and demanding that the focus on what happens after the wedding –marriage – gets lost. Perhaps this shift in focus is another silver lining in these crazy times. Either way, we salute this year’s crop of newlyweds and wish them the absolute best as they build their futures. Duly noted is all the decor inspiration we gathered from these pages, from the florals to the fun themes. We also noticed that couples want to be surrounded not only by loved ones but by their favorite hometown things, from family recipes to Bay views, resulting in personalized celebrations that extended the love for all to experience.

Celebrating over 75 years in the real estate business, the team at Roberts Brothers went all out. Hosting their annual meeting and awards at downtown Mobile’s beloved Saenger Theatre, performer Brandon Styles received wild applause for everything from his spot-on Ozzy Osborne and Michael Jackson covers to his bewildering magic tricks. Not leaving a dry eye in the house, Managing Broker Tim Wallace received their famed John Taylor Award, aptly named after the dear colleague known for his selfless and kind spirit. Agent Concierge Peggy Hayden was honored with the Our Why Award, which recognizes those who deliberately live and give without hesitation, and Bernadette Windle was named the Charitable Fund Award winner. From there, guests flowed into the hopping street party to enjoy The Tip Tops and an assortment of delicious bites at a grilled oyster station, a grits and gumbo bar, and even a hot chocolate bar, all provided by Mathew Golden of Loda Bier Garten. Further? Mo’ Bay Beignet’s food truck offered dessert to this deserving crowd.

GALENTINE’S DAY SOIRÉE Raising a Champagne toast to local gal pals, Interwoven’s Angela Weil and Sadie Solberg celebrated Galentine’s Day in style. f you’re from the area, chances are you know the Zoghby name. With deep local roots dating back a century, this large Lebanese family has a long heritage and rich history that’s played a vital role in weaving the very fabric of Mobile. True to Zoghby family tradition, recent bride Lydia Maloy, the daughter of Diane Zoghby and Ray Maloy, chose the Ezell House to celebrate her nuptials to Matthew Clay McDowell of Birmingham.

Recalling history, Lydia shares, “The Ezell House is a family home purchased in 1923 where my uncle, Judge Michael Elias Zoghby, was born and raised until the family sold the home in 1978. It has long been the tradition for Zoghby family wedding receptions to be held in this home and I feel humbled that Clay and I were able to continue this legacy. I fondly recall being a flower girl when I was just five years old alongside my cousins Garrett, Stephen, and Caroline Zoghby in addition to countless other family weddings at The Ezell House throughout my life. I grew up envisioning dancing with my future husband under those courtyard lights. It was one of the most surreal moments when that became a reality! It felt like the stars were aligning and we were exactly where we were meant to be.”

From the start, Lydia knew she wanted to acknowledge close familial relationships. “My grandmother and namesake, Josephine Zoghby, passed away two years ago. To honor her, I draped the blue rosary she prayed over every day around my bouquet and secured it with a gold pin engraved with her name.

For my ‘something borrowed,’ I wore my mother Diane’s three-strand pearl bracelet signifying faith, hope, and love. One of my favorite parts of the ceremony was when my Aunt Melanie Zoghby Cummins sang ‘Ave Maria.’ Having grown up listening to her sing, I always knew I wanted her to perform at my wedding. From the first note, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house,” Lydia beams.

Comparing growing up in a big family as an experience similar to the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Lydia adds, “Although I’m an only child, I’ve never felt alone since my mother is one of seven children and there’s never a dull moment.

Surrounded by unconditional love, delicious food, big personalities, and good chaos, I didn’t fully appreciate this until I became an adult and realized most people don’t have this level of support. It’s one of my greatest blessings. Introducing Clay to the family was slightly nerve-wracking, but he immediately fit right in!”

With a heartwarming history of their own, the couple met while Lydia was working for a nonprofit serving adults with developmental disabilities. “Our organization moved and we hosted an open house to meet the other building tenants. Clay showed up as he was the volunteer Junior Board President for the Autism Society of Alabama. A true match made in Heaven, Clay eventually ended up working across the hall and got to know my coworkers, who are like family to me. All of us being together at our wedding was definitely a highlight,” Lydia recalls.

Clearly a compassionate couple, Lydia expands, sharing, “Clay and I like to say we fill each other’s gaps and yet we’re the epitome of opposites attract. He loves to go, go, go while I thrive in my pajamas under a cozy blanket at home. However, our core values couldn’t be more in sync

and we genuinely love being together. We find joy in simple moments like going on walks, trying new recipes, and spending time with our friends and family. I couldn’t dream of a better life partner.”

Each having found their person, Clay and Lydia had just bought their first home two months into the pandemic. “Like many people working from home, I hadn’t worn ‘real clothes’ in quite some time. Somehow, Clay collaborated with my best friend Shelby to get me out of the sweatpants and house for lunch. When I returned, Clay had me close my eyes as he led me to our deck where he proposed on bended knee. The perfect way to start our life together, he then took me to his parents’ home where I was surprised with friends and family. There were lots of tears since we hadn’t been together in months due to the pandemic,” Lydia fondly shares.

With the Ezell House reserved, Lydia and Diane began to plan. A time Lydia will hold dear forever, she shares, “Planning this wedding with my mom was one of the most special experiences of our lives. She was truly phenomenal in ensuring the day held all of the moments I have dreamed about.

In addition to singing, my Aunt Melanie is also an established wedding coordinator in Mobile so we all worked together and it was quite the family affair! My cousin and local priest, Reverend James F. Zoghby, presided over the ceremony, and our cousin, Alec Naman of Mobile’s Naman’s

Catering, took care of the food. While Clay and I reside in Birmingham, the planning process was the perfect reason to make frequent trips, which reminded me of what makes Mobile so special. I know my mom and I will cherish that time forever,” Lydia says.

A memorable celebration was a top priority. “We held a second line complete with the band leading with brass instruments. A first for many, this was a big hit!” notes Lydia. Further, “Naturally, it was important to capture the essence of my Lebanese heritage with the food while also showcasing the flavors of Mobile. Working with the incredible team at Naman’s, we were able to serve authentic dishes like spanakopita, rolled grape leaves, fried meat pies, baked ziti, and grilled kabobs. We even had a grill and carving station that served beef tenderloin with horseradish sauce, au jus, and rolls, Conecuh sausage with jezebel sauce and spicy mustard, as well as shrimp with an artichoke remoulade. Our late-night snack was met with rave reviews—Foosackly’s chicken fingers, french fries and Foo sauce! My first job was with Naman’s

so it was full-circle having this team care for us. They even gave us a to-go bag with a bottle of champagne for us to enjoy as we drove away.”

Crediting her eight bridesmaids for bringing the laughter, dance moves, and calming abilities, Lydia and Clay also did a first look where they read letters to each other standing back-to-back and then turned around for their big reveal.

“Having that special moment with each other, my Maid of Honor, and Clay’s brother, Will, gave us time to relax with each other and our wedding party before we all boarded the trolley. The moment I love to replay was walking down the aisle with my father. Having him guide me down the aisle to my future husband brought tears to my eyes. Clay and I agree that looking out at our family and friends during the mass was the epitome of joy,” she smiles.

Having chosen St. Joseph Chapel at Spring Hill College for the ceremony, Lydia adds, “I chose the chapel for the intimacy it would allow for the sacrament of marriage and for being with our closest loved ones. I also knew it would offer the acoustics for us to get the full effect of my aunt’s singing. It could not have been more stunning and I’ll never forget seeing the faces of our loved ones and right behind them, the most vibrant golden sunset shining through the stained-glass windows. From the minute I woke up on our wedding day, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace knowing every last detail was planned and that at the end of the day, Clay and I would be married!”

As for seeing his bride walking down the aisle? “I’ll never forget that moment. I’m not a crier but when I saw Lydia, I came

close to losing it. There she was, like an angel walking toward me and I was about to marry her. She was stunning and had the biggest smile on her face. Something overtook me and I knew this moment was one that I will always keep close to my heart. I was, and still am, the luckiest guy in the world,” Clay shares.

For now, the couple plans to settle down in Birmingham, not too far from the Zoghby tribe. Both with busy careers, Lydia spent the three years prior to their wedding pursuing a master’s degree, working full time, completing internships, and taking night classes, so the couple looks forward to relaxing and starting their lives as husband and wife—all while flipping through their wedding album.

A Tale of

TWO WEDDINGS If the pandemic put a damper on global wedding plans, Mobile’s Cissy and Michael Cowart have more than made up for it. Within a span of four months, they welcomed not one, but two new members into their tightly-knit clan. Planning back-to-back nuptials might send mere mortals into Momzilla mode, but the art of hosting plays to Cissy’s strengths. A decades-long career in fashion and a knack for Google spreadsheets has equipped her with a keen eye and certain je ne sais quoi and party planning inside their household has always been a joyous affair. Her daughter Ramsey and son Michael, along with their partners, were more than confident that even the smallest details would be approached with intention and care. From expertly engineered surprise engagements to a rustic rehearsal dinner and a truly elevated home wedding reception, it’s obvious—the Cowarts know how to throw a party.

lizabeth Ramsey Cowart was joined in matrimony with John Myers Rudolph at St. Joseph Chapel at Spring Hill College on September 25, 2021. Having grown up down the street, Ramsey always dreamed of getting married in the Gothic Revival church. The ornate architectural details provided an apt backdrop for the clean lines of the bride’s ethereal gown by Amsale Aberra, the New York-based Ethiopian designer widely credited with the invention of the modern wedding dress.

Taking a cue from her parents, whose own reception took place at Cissy’s parents’ New Orleans Garden District home, Ramsey and Myers’ reception was staged at the bride’s parents’ home in Spring Hill’s Country Club Estates. The stately residence was transformed into a veritable dreamscape of lush florals in hues of cream and blush, Ramsey’s signature palette. The two-story columns were draped top to bottom in a sumptuous arrangement of wildflowers, roses, hydrangeas, and ranunculi, then joined by a floral arch. “We were definitely going for a wow factor,” says Ramsey, joking that the front porch may have been her favorite part of the wedding.

Stephanie Easterling, owner of Wildflowers Floral Design, couldn’t agree more, sharing, “Everything felt like a modern-day Steel Magnolias. There was so much joy and laughter at a home covered in abounding flowers. Ramsey and Cissy knew they wanted flowers in the front of their home, where there was an existing grand entrance.

Of course, I agreed and wanted to take them all the way to the roof,” she laughs.

“Obviously I jest, but we do share their love of flowers and draped the entire entrance.”

“It all started with the blush ribbon I found on Amazon,” notes Cissy. “We matched it to the invitation liners, balloons, bridesmaid dresses, florals—everything! It was important to have a cohesive palette that would tie everything together in an understated but elevated way. Fairhope’s Wildflower Floral Design team gets top marks for knocking it out of the park, too.”

Stephanie smiles at the compliment, saying, “Beyond the florals, what was truly special about this entire project was working with the family. It was a joy looking at linens and ribbon and choosing flowers that would coordinate perfectly.” Ramsey offers praise, too, stating, “My mom and wedding planner Blair Gewin of Blair Events, who is also my favorite childhood babysitter, were the

dream team. They had such a clear vision and I give them all the credit.”

Not to be overshadowed, the rest of the provisions were equally as thoughtful, from the golf ballshaped cakes served at the welcome party (a nod to the Rudolph family’s love of the game) to the crisp linens, tiled checkerboard dance floor, and oversized balloons, all in the precise shade of Ramsey’s color scheme. Ramsey was honored to use her husband’s grandmother Dolores Courtney’s knife to serve the stunning cake, a stepped pyramidal confection adorned with ranunculus blossoms. Cissy recounts the sheer joy of the father-daughter dance, “Ever since the kids were little, we’ve had a silly tradition we call the ‘circle dance,’ where all of us dance around one of us in the middle. It’s just a fun family thing we’ve always done. When Ramsey and her father took to the dance floor, her brother Michael and I instinctively joined right in. It was a little unconventional, but so special and so much fun.”

Equally memorable and indicative of the Cowarts’ gowith-the-flow sensibility was the unfortunate demise of Ramsey and Myers’ getaway vehicle—a golf cart borrowed from family friends that, to everyone’s surprise, broke down before they even made it off the lawn. Ramsey recalls, “As we were leaving, we realized it wasn’t going to start. Donald Brown Jr., Myers’ Dad, and Blair Gewin, had to push us out! We were all dying laughing.” The upside? The newlyweds had plenty to reminisce about on their honeymoon to Turks and Caicos Islands.

Engaged on Christmas Day 2020, Cissy was in on the planning from the beginning. “It was pretty well orchestrated, from the ring shopping—Myers, his mother, and I went to New Orleans—to the engagement party, which Ramsey unknowingly threw a monkey wrench into. We always have a big family party on Christmas, so it wasn’t out of the ordinary for us to be setting up, but we were counting on her taking a lot longer to get ready than she did. Forced to improvise, we invented a Solo-cup emergency and sent her and Myers to Walgreens (literally the only open store on Christmas!), so we could finish up!” she laughs.

Both graduates of The University of Alabama, Ramsey works for New Orleans-based interior designer Grace Kaynor and Myers is a real estate investor based in New Orleans, which the couple calls home. Having met in 2018, when Myers and his identical twin brother gave Ramsey a ride, Ramsey claims, “I knew he was the one when I realized he was as much a gentleman as my brother and dad. I called my mom gushing that he did all the little things my dad has always done for my mom—opens my car door, sends me sweet texts in the middle of the day, stands up when I get up from the dinner table, and always keeps me laughing! Also, I know my parents couldn’t be happier that their kids ended up with Alabama grads.”

ven though a daughter’s wedding is often seemingly more labor intensive than a son’s, it’s not hard to imagine that the last piece of cake from their daughter’s wedding had scarcely been eaten when Michael and Cissy Cowarts’ thoughts turned to their son Michael’s upcoming wedding to Anna Elizabeth Ryan on January 15, 2022.

Having met on a blind date that went spectacularly well, it wasn’t long before Michael knew he had met his future wife. “I remember being at a friend’s wedding and introducing Anna as my girlfriend and thinking I couldn’t wait to introduce her as my wife,” he beams. Mirroring Michael’s claims, it was instant for Anna, too. “I’m pretty sure I knew I was going to marry Michael on our first date when he stood up from the table when I got up to use the restroom. He impressed me so much right from the start. Opening doors and always dressed to the nines, I was immediately smitten,” she shares.

An equally excited Cissy, who had been in on the ring shopping, was growing impatient while Michael sorted out the perfect way to propose. “That ring sat on my night table for months before he finally decided when and where to pop the question,” she shares. “We were all in New Orleans, where Myers and Ramsey live, and Anna and Michael went for a run. Little did Anna know Michael’s friends were hiding in the bushes waiting to jump out and take photos. Anna was truly surprised.

Later, her parents came over along with a group of friends from Mobile for the party. It was really moving and worth the wait—there were lots of tears of happiness that day.”

With the date set, Cissy’s preparations for the rehearsal dinner began. A chocolate brown and white palette would dictate the invitation design, linen selection, and florals, also achieving the perfect balance of masculine and feminine elements. The rustic charm of The Wash House in Fairhope lent itself to Cissy’s instinct for balance and proportion, with monolithic arrangements of white tulips contrasting the warmth of the wood interiors.

A closer look at the table settings reveals intimate touches like monogrammed napkins, brown Estelle glasses, and the Cowarts’ personal china and silver cutlery. Etchedglass seating charts nestled among soft green moss and groupings of white pillar candles were complemented by votive candles in mirrored boxes, creating an organic and clean presentation. telling us, “Our rehearsal dinner was utter perfection. I can’t thank Cissy enough for all of the care she took in making it perfect for us. My favorite thing was the unique place settings at our family table.”

Describing the rehearsal dinner as “stunning,” Wildflower’s owner Stephanie Easterling details, “Cissy chose a beautiful clean, white tabletop with brown stemware perfectly contrasting it. Following her lead, we chose to fill an elongated modern brown glass vessel with well over a thousand white tulips. Designing with a monochromatic element provided the perfect balance between place settings and florals.”

Anna vividly recalls standing with Michael at the altar of Fairhope’s Sacred Heart Catholic Church, saying, “It makes me choke up when I think back on all the fun and special moments, but I’ll never forget when we finally got to say our vows to each other. My eyes felt glued to Michael and I was smiling so hard I didn’t think I would be able to speak.” Incorporating family pieces into her bridal ensemble was important to Anna. “Years ago, my dad got my mom a new wedding band and ring and had her original diamond set into the center of the cross pendant I wore. I also wore my great-grandmother’s wedding ring on my right hand. She was a very special person and it was meaningful to have her be part of my wedding day. Lastly, Michael’s wedding band was my grandfather’s, my dad’s father. Married to my grandmother, who was at our ceremony, for over 63 years before he passed a few years ago, she told us that since Michael now wears that ring we will have at least 63 years together. We had it engraved ‘Ryan 1955 Cowart 2022.’”

The picturesque Fairhope Inn was selected for the reception. “I chose a white and green color palette and knew I wanted a classic wedding so I could look back 20 years from now and still love the flowers, my dress, the bridesmaids’ dresses, and so forth,” Anna remarks, further adding, “Our reception was the most fun I’ve ever had—nothing mattered except being with Michael, dancing, laughing, and feeling happy. Every single detail, from the string lights under the clear tent and the raw oyster bar, to the band and the flowers draping the fountain, added up to my fairytale wedding. And of course I knew we had to have a New Orleans twist with the second line to The Bone and Barrel for an after-party! I wouldn’t change a thing. I’m truly so lucky to have married the man of dreams at the wedding of my dreams.”

Asked to share her thoughts on having a number of engagements and weddings within her own family and Michael’s in a short span of time, Anna says, “It was all so much fun and there is one major perk of marrying Michael—getting Ramsey as a sister. She’s one of my favorite people and I have come to consider her one of my closest friends. Being a part of her wedding planning process and having her play a major part in my own was gratifying. Naturally, I give major props to my mom, Kelley, for helping me plan every single detail of our wedding. She made countless trips over the Bay for meetings and fittings and never missed a beat. It was everything I dreamed of and it wouldn’t have happened without her.”

Looking back, Anna recalls her father telling her years before she met Michael that he hoped she’d one day meet someone who loved running as much as she did. “My dad got his wish! Running together is one of our favorite things,” she claims, adding, “But more than that, I never really knew New Orleans except for Bourbon Street. On our first weekend away together, Michael introduced me to everything I love about New Orleans— the restaurants, bars, architecture, coffee spots, and so much more. It was there that I told him I loved him for the first time and since then, it’s become an important part of our relationship.”

Both graduates of The University of Alabama, Michael works as a financial planner with The Cowart Group and Anna earned her master’s degree from the University of South Alabama and is a speech-language pathologist. The newlyweds have been busy renovating a home in Ravine Woods. Close to completion, they’re looking forward to settling in this fun neighborhood as well as spending their honeymoon in Italy in June.

tars (and snow) fell on Alabama for the wedding of Ashton Cushing and Joshua Donnell on December 18, 2021. The Grand Hotel was the venue for the mustbe-seen-to-be-believed party. With a dedicated team comprised of Jeanne Hunt and Brooke Guesnard of Events Detailed, Stephanie Easterling of Wildflowers Floral Design, and style maven Shawn Cushing (Ashton just calls her Mom), and more, this wedding reception was in a league of its own, as is Ashton and Josh’s love story.

“Josh and I met in at The University of Alabama, where we ran in the same big social circle. We were friends before we started dating,” says Ashton, revealing probably the best way to find your soulmate—become friends first! “There was never a certain ‘moment’ per se when I knew Josh was the one, it was more how he made me feel as our relationship progressed. He feels like home to me and he has for a long time. He makes me feel safe and pushes me to be a better person every day, be it in my friendships, my job, my faith, you name it.

He’s very driven and I know he will make a great leader for our family one day.” And Josh? “I have known for a long time that I could not imagine my life without Ashton. She’s my better half for too many reasons to list. I outkicked my coverage for sure,” he smiles.

Ashton’s mother, Shawn Cushing, couldn’t be more supportive of the couple, telling us, “Ashton and Josh started dating their senior year at Alabama.

Since then, they both continue to thrive and have successful careers. ‘Real world’ experience has only strengthened a relationship based in love and full of laughter, patience, and friendship. The only couple happier than Ashton and Josh are my husband Dan and me!”

Asking a woman to marry you can be a tricky business if you’re trying to surprise her, but Josh made a valiant attempt nevertheless. Shawn shares, “Josh asked Ashton’s dad (Dan Cushing) for her hand Thanksgiving weekend in 2020.” Dan and Shawn were thrilled and filled with anticipation. “He did not mention when he was going to propose to Ashton, so we waited to hear from him and then waited some more. He reached out for engagement ideas in February of 2021 and we came up with all sorts of schemes to surprise Ashton.”

Here, we jump to Ashton’s telling of the tale. “Josh originally had plans to propose at sunset somewhere on the water, however, we took a walk that morning and ran into a family friend who shared that ‘he had seen Josh’s parents, Lisa and Skip Donnell, last night at dinner.’ Josh, whose parents live in Birmingham, tried to play it off and said, ‘Oh, where did you see them?’ thinking he would take the hint, but no. He kept saying he saw them in Fairhope before finally realizing that he had spilled the beans.

It was a surprise Josh’s parents were in town because at this point he hadn’t proposed, and the plan was for them

to show up after the proposal. It was so funny.

We finished our walk while I hounded him with a million questions. I could not contain my excitement and he ended up proposing when we got back to the house—it was just us there and it was absolutely perfect. Our families showed up shortly after and it was the best weekend ever,” she concludes.

Then came the planning. The couple’s vision was a winter wonderland. Ashton says, “We wanted everything to be beautiful and soft—floating candles, white flowers, flocked Christmas trees, mirrored tables, and more. We worked with Brooke and Jeanne and they nailed it! Wildflowers did an amazing job bringing the ideas we had for florals to life. We are so lucky we were able to work with such talented people.”

One of those talented people was her mom, and Ashton notes, “We truly had the best time planning the wedding. I adore my mother and everything she likes, I like. Honestly, I never had to worry about any of the wedding details because I knew she had it all taken care of and that she would make it fabulous. She has an amazing talent for design and always has unique ideas, like having the Christmas tree platform in the middle of the bar, having it snow, and many more. She was the mastermind behind it all!”

Shawn, too, had a delightful time helping bring Ashton’s vision to life. “We were able to start immediately because Ashton knew she wanted a winter wedding,” she claims. “We enjoy the design process of clothing so getting the dress just right was exciting for us. Ashton’s sister, Ali, was extremely helpful with many details so there were three of us to help with decisions and to take on different tasks.” Always gracious, Shawn is quick to credit Events Detailed, saying, “We worked with wedding planners Brooke Guesnard and Jeannie Hunt. They did all of the heavy lifting!”

Recalling the scene at home before the wedding, Shawn smiles, “We had a house full of bridesmaids and friends; Ashton was calm and happy, with no wedding jitters or stage fright.” The ceremony at St. James Episcopal Church was everything they’d hoped it would be. Josh shares, “When Ashton walked down the aisle, it was a very emotional moment for me. She looked stunning and I felt so lucky, and still do!” There appears to be a consensus on everyone’s favorite moment at the ceremony—Josh, Ashton, and Shawn all tell the same story. “Emotions are high for so many reasons during a wedding,”

begins Ashton, “After Father Sirmon took our rings, he accidentally dropped them, where they clanged on the floor and spiraled around for a few seconds. It was such a great unexpected occurrence and everyone burst into laughter, which lightened the moment. He played it off beautifully and tied it together, picking up our rings while saying, ‘And should they fall, they will raise one another up.’”

Ashton was awestruck when they arrived at The Grand Hotel. “The reception truly blew Josh and me away. It was beyond anything we could have imagined. From the décor, food, the band, and all of our friends and family together—it was the absolute best. I love that my younger sister Ali caught the bouquet. And the snow! It felt magical walking out at the end in the snow! There was a 100 percent chance of rain all day, but it never did.

Instead, it snowed in 70-degree weather,“ she laughs.

Shawn adds, “We were undeterred by the rainy forecast and did not deviate from our plan, because regardless of the real-world weather, our chance of snow remained at 100 percent!”

Complimenting another man in her life, Ashton tells us, “My dad was in charge of food and drinks served at the reception and he nailed it! He created a large and varied menu, including grilled and fried oysters, a risotto station, ahi tuna tacos, mac and cheese, and beef tenderloin,” says Ashton. “My one must-have was cheeseburgers, fries, and Chrissys for late-night. I’m grateful for everything he did.”

One of Josh’s favorite memories from his wedding day didn’t occur at the ceremony or reception. He elaborates, saying, “After the wedding, when we got back to our hotel, our room key didn’t work. It ended up being such a comical moment as Ashton and I sat on the floor and ate cheeseburgers and fries from the reception while we waited on security to let us in. It made for a great memory and funny pictures.”

Josh and Ashton went to Antigua for their honeymoon. They reside in Birmingham and Ashton declares, “We are open to all the possibilities the future might hold!”

CHARLOTTE & SAYRE November 20, 2021

H

igh school sweethearts Charlotte Bristow Galloway and William Sayre Kearley were married on November 20, 2021. The couple began dating in 2010 while attending UMS-Wright. Their commitment to each other continued while they were at (and graduated from) The University of Alabama, with Charlotte becoming a pediatric registered nurse and Sayre a structural engineer.

Obviously made for each other, Charlotte says, “I always knew how special our relationship was. He is my biggest motivator, keeps me grounded, and pushes me to be my best self every day.” Sayre tells us, “There was no specific moment I knew we’d be together forever, but rather an accumulation of moments where we shared common interests and worked together to reach our goals—I truly admire her compassion and selflessness.”

“We went to dinner at Jeffrey’s in Austin for our 11th (yes, 11th!) anniversary,” Charlotte smiles, adding, “While I was taking glamour shots of the truffled deviled eggs, he got down on one knee and proposed, which was beyond surprising!”

With a wedding date set for November, Charlotte wanted to incorporate a pale orange with the greenery in her florals, but, she laughs, “Other than the food, my mom planned every detail. More than anything, we wanted it to be a fun night for everyone.” Sayre notes, “During the wedding planning, my only input was ensuring we had a police escort from the church to the reception.

I was Charlotte’s Knight when she served on the Mardi Gras Court in 2016,

and I always loved how the Court had a police escort. It was surreal to have the same treatment on our wedding day; it reminded me of all the great times we’ve had over the years.”

The wedding venue was meaningful for Charlotte. “I grew up going to St Ignatius, so getting married in the new church was special. I had my grandmother’s lavalier, Sayre’s grandmother’s sapphire pin, and his other grandmother’s antique handkerchief pinned to my bouquet. Having our family and friends with us throughout the day was something we will never forget.”

Charlotte’s gown was also a testament to her family’s closeness; it was first worn by her sister Kathleen and lace was added from her mother’s wedding dress. Sayre, too, is part of a close family; his wedding ring once belonged to his grandfather, and it was customized with the initials and wedding dates of his grandparents and the newlyweds. On watching Charlotte walk down the aisle, Sayre claims he was not nervous at all. “I just felt really happy that we were about to start our lives together, and glad she showed up,” he jokes.

“Colonial Fort Condé was such a unique place to have our reception. We both knew we wanted it to be outdoors, and the historical components of the Fort and the Mobile skyline in the distance were the perfect touch,” claims Charlotte, adding, “Also, Sayre had his fifth birthday party at the Fort with legendary lobster races.” Charlotte smiles while recounting her first dance with her father. “He texted me saying we should do a surprise choregraphed dance to ‘Fancy Like’ by Walker Hayes. so I told him no. When I arrived in Mobile the Thursday before our wedding, he convinced me by reminding me it was his last daughter’s wedding and it would be fun, and he was right!”

With their honeymoon to the Grenadines postponed until May, the couple are counting down the days. They currently live in Austin, Texas, and hope to move back to Mobile in the future.

mily Ryan and Walter Franklin Branson Jr. (He goes by Frank) were married at The Ezell House Courtyard in a celebration of their love and devotion to their family. Emily is mother to five children, a renowned artist and owner of Emily Ryan Studio, as well as a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (and owner) at New Chapter Space, LLC. Frank is the owner of his own construction company, Branson Construction, LLC. The pair met through mutual friends at a party and have since been going strong.

“This amazing man accepts and loves me wholeheartedly for me (the good and ugly). Once you get a taste of being loved unconditionally, you don’t let that go,” Emily beams.

Frank shares the sentiment, telling us, “Emily is the first person I ever noticed use the words ‘We should be kind’ as a rule of life. I remember parents and teachers saying ‘be nice,’ but never ‘be kind.’ That one phrase spoke volumes about her.”

As proposals go, Frank’s was perfect, according to Emily, who shares, ”He asked the children permission before proposing, which in itself was heartwarming. The five littles, as I call them, orchestrated all of the details. They

chose music they knew I liked, dressed up, and hid their iPads in order to capture a video of the big night—it’s a beautiful memory we will forever share as a family.”

Planning for her wedding was colored by her approach to life in general. “My vision for our wedding day was one of ease, love, and free-spirited celebrating. The aesthetics were chosen to reflect our personal style; something with character, texture, and certainly not boring.” Her favorite reception food?

“The grilled cheese sandwiches and sliders. Bay Gourmet Catering never disappoints!” The stunning black wedding cake had three layers filled with pistachio, almond and lavender, and honey and blackberry flavors.

Asked about any sentimental details they added to the ceremony, Emily replies, “The sentimental touches were the beautiful souls of friends and family surrounding us to celebrate our marriage.” Frank recalls how he felt when he saw her walking down the aisle. “Awestruck—she takes my breath away,” he declares. One of Emily’s fondest memories of the day occurred post-ceremony. She elaborates, “After the ceremony, the children surrounded Frank and me in a group hug, our first as a family.” For Frank, the feeling was mutual.

aroline Whaley and Carson Porter Davidenko were joined in marriage on August 28, 2021. College sweethearts at the University of South Alabama, the couple met at a mutual friend’s house in 2018.

Caroline says, “Carson brought pizza and I asked if I could have a slice. We immediately hit it off and have been together ever since!”

“I knew Carson was the one as soon as I saw him walk through the door. As cheesy as it sounds, it was love at first sight for me. We connected right away and every day with him was better than the last,” she says, adding, “After we met, I went home that night and told all of my friends I’d just met my future husband.”

For Carson? “I just knew. It’s hard for me to pinpoint a single moment when it happened because there are so many incredible times we shared. What we have together has been truly fun and spontaneous. I’ve always known our relationship is special and I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her,” he claims.

The couple maintained their closeness after they graduated and Carson moved to Memphis, Tennessee, for his job while Caroline worked in Mobile. “I was visiting Carson in October of 2020 and we went for afternoon tea at the Peabody Hotel,” Caroline tells us. “After the last course, Carson got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I looked up and we were surrounded by both of our families. It was a complete surprise—my nails weren’t even done! I’m still amazed he was able to pull that off.”

Caroline and Carson’s mutual love for Fairhope shaped their elegant wedding. “We wanted to show off the beautiful white church for the ceremony

and downtown for the reception,” she says. Carson and I are both very laid back and wanted something simplistic and modern. My bridesmaids’ dresses were taupe and we used white, blush, and cream flowers with lots of greenery. We also wanted a great band so we could dance the night away with our friends and family.”

Declaring their wedding ceremony “short, sweet, and intimate—just the way we wanted it,” Caroline adds, “We took communion together before we were pronounced husband and wife, which was very special moment.” Caroline’s jewelry was more than meaningful for her. “I wore my mom’s pearl bracelet and earrings, the same ones she wore on her wedding day. The bracelet has a sapphire clasp, which is not only my birthstone, but also my twin brother’s; he passed away in 2017. Wearing the bracelet and having his picture attached to my bouquet was my way of honoring him.”

Carson recounts, “When I first saw her, she took my breath away. I may look serious in the pictures taken while she was walking down the aisle, but truly, I was holding back tears.” Further, “Seeing Caroline at our first look was my favorite part of the day. She was absolutely stunning and we exchanged notes we had written to each other.” Caroline adds, “I thought I would be nervous and emotional, but I ended up being so excited to see my future husband standing at the altar. I couldn’t stop smiling. Marrying Carson was the best decision I’ve ever made.”

The reception was everything the couple hoped for, with gourmet food, an open bar, and the band playing nonstop. “We always talk about how loved and supported we felt by all of our friends and family,” Caroline shares.

Making it a full-circle moment was the late-night snack at the reception. Caroline beams, “We served Little Caesar’s pizza, which is the pizza Carson was eating when we met.”

The newlyweds honeymooned at the Ritz-Carlton in St. Thomas and reside in Memphis, where Carson is on the verge of earning his MBA and Caroline plans to return to school to become a family nurse practitioner. The couple plans to buy a house soon, and with their clearly evident love for each other, it will indeed be a home sweet home.

MADISON & HOUSTON December 31, 2021

ollege sweethearts Madison Clark Sanders and Mathew Houston Clark were united in marriage in December 31, 2021. “Our relationship began when I asked him to formal at the end of freshman year. We were good friends at the time and I had no clue he secretly had a crush on me! The beginning of sophomore year, we started hanging out and the rest was history,” she claims.

For Houston, there were “multiple moments throughout our years of dating when I knew she was the one. Probably one of my favorite moments is when Madison and I randomly discovered both of us list Jason Aldean is our favorite singer,” he says. “Even better, we also had the same favorite song. This may seem small, but it was a moment I will never forget.”

Remembering the proposal, Madison shares, “He proposed at Turquoise Place in Orange Beach. We were spending the week with my family for my birthday. I pray I never forget the feeling of watching him get down on his knee to ask me to marry him. I felt true happiness and couldn’t believe this was real life—it was a ‘pinch me’ kind of moment. Afterward, all of our friends and family ran out of the condo and that’s when the party started.”

Regarding the ceremony, Houston touchingly recalls, “I was completely speechless when I saw her walking down the aisle. This was the moment when it all became real. As soon as I saw her, all of my nervousness went away; all I could think about was how perfect she was and that I was about to start forever with my best friend.” Madison is heartfelt as she adds, “It

makes me tear up thinking about so many of our friends and family taking the time out of their busy lives to celebrate Houston and me. I hope I never forget that feeling! With over 450 guests, somehow it still felt intimate. I’m so blessed to have married my best friend in front of everyone who means so much to both of us.”

These Mississippi State University graduates envisioned a stylish wedding, with Madison telling us, “I wanted it very simple. No color—just black, white, and gold. My goal was for it to be elegant and timeless. With the help of my mom, grandmother, and wedding planner Chelsea Crawford, it all came to life!” Having the wedding in Orange Beach meant seafood would definitely be on the menu. “We had shrimp and crab cakes for passed hors d’oeuvres and for dinner, we had sliders and pasta. We felt that carbs were necessary for New Year’s Eve,” she jokes. With a full bar and champagne to help ring in the new year, it was a night to remember.

Asked for one of their fondest memories of the day, the couple agrees it’s hard to name just one. Madison exclaims, “Oh my gosh, it truly was the best day ever! My family did the flowers, which was deeply meaningful to me.

They have done flowers for many years, so it was a real honor to have them make the arrangements at our wedding.” Houston agrees, further saying, “It’s hard to pick a favorite moment, but one of mine was walking back down the aisle holding Madison’s hand and seeing all of our friends and family who came and celebrated with us.”

The honeymoon at Jade Mountain Resort in St. Lucia had Madison telling us, “It was amazing! We cannot wait to go back and visit one day. it’s an actual paradise.” The newlyweds currently live in Bowling Green, Kentucky, where Houston works for Clark Beverage Group and Madison is “planning to make this place feel like home!”

rom meet-cute to marriage! Megan Elizabeth Mañas and Larry Gordon Goontz III first met in 2018 when they were involved in a minor car accident on the Bayway. While they waited for assistance, they began a lively conversation, compelling them to want to know each other better. Soon they were dating, and nowadays they go by Larry and Megan Goontz.

Megan shares, “I knew Larry was the one for me after we took our first trip together to Europe in 2019. After that, I knew we were meant to be because we would both spend a lifetime trying to make each other’s wildest dreams come true and that it truly didn’t matter where I lived—as long as he was there, that was my home.”

“I’m pretty sure I knew she was the one for me before she knew I was the one for her,” Larry jokes. “For me, there were countless small moments that added up when we started dating. She’s the most beautiful, loving, caring, and interesting person I’ve ever met,” he says.

Larry proposed to Megan with a custom ring on a private sunset cruise in Palm Beach, Aruba. Wedding plans were soon in the works. Megan says, “My vision for our wedding day was glamour and romance with a trendy infusion. I had everything in shades of mauve, cream and champagne with lots of flowers, Italian lighting, and pretty lanterns to set the ambience.”

At the ceremony, Larry recalls how he felt when he saw her walking down

the aisle. “Even though I’d already seen her when we did our first look and cried then, I cried again because the love of my life was walking towards me and we were about to start our incredible future together,” he states.

The couple loves Mardi Gras season. “With many out-of-town guests, we wanted to do something special for them,” says Megan. “We hired a second line to parade us around Cathedral Square after the ceremony, and we marched everyone into the reception at The Ezell House, which set the tone for the reception. It was a party from start to finish!”

One of Megan’s fondest memories of the day was when Larry surprised her with a “sexy Magic Mike-themed dance to ‘Pony’ for the garter toss. I was not expecting it at all and everyone went wild when he did it! Larry’s not a person who’s comfortable doing a sexy dance. I absolutely loved it and am so happy I have that memory forever,” she smiles.

One of Larry’s great memories is also about dancing. “My favorite part was completely unexpected—when Dat Band started playing Latin hits. My wife is Latina and had many relatives there. Once that music started, everyone flocked to the dance floor, even the people on my side from Ohio and West Virginia. I remember looking around and thinking, ‘Wow, this is the most fun wedding I’ve ever been to!’”

The couple are grateful for their families, with Megan saying, “None of this would have been possible without the tremendous support of our families.

My parents, Andrew and Karla Mañas, did an incredible job helping us plan, especially since we were in another state.” Further, she claims, “The rehearsal dinner at the History Museum of Mobile was almost like a wedding, too, with 130 people. Larry’s family did a fantastic job helping us with that, as well.”

The pair honeymooned in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Currently living in Fort Mill, South Carolina, both are working in Charlotte, North Carolina. Megan is excited for their future, saying, “Our plans involve settling into our new life up north, traveling as much as possible when we get the chance, and eventually starting a family.”

n true New Orleans fashion, Katherine “Katie” Miller and native son Lyons Friedman Yellin held their wedding and reception at Galeriè de Galatoire, the new event venue of world-renowned Galatoire’s. “Lyons grew up eating there and it’s one of our favorite places to dine together, so we thought it would be perfect,” Katie shares. “When the wedding grew too large for the upstairs area, we were fortunate the owners offered us the new venue.”

According to Katie, they found each other online and met in person a few weeks later at Davenport Lounge at the Ritz-Carlton in New Orleans. Having met before the pandemic shutdown, they began spending lots of time together, so it was a natural progression for them to quarantine together. Katie says, “After spending all those months together, which could have been difficult for some, I realized everything was altogether amazing because he filled every moment with excitement and positivity—not only for me, but my son Davis, as well.”

For Lyons? “I knew almost immediately. It’s cliche, but we definitely had a spark from the first moment we met. Of course she’s a knockout, but I really loved her wit, sarcasm, playful spirit, and her mind—she was without question one of the smartest and sharpest people I’d ever met,” he shares, adding, “After a few weeks, I wanted to spend all my time with her, which, for me, was a totally foreign concept. She became my best friend, confidante, and the person I felt I could turn to above all else, and at that point, I just knew we’d be together forever.”

Lyons proposed to Katie during the lockdown, but the seemingly out-of-the

blue nature of it made it no less tender a moment. “We were just hanging out at my house when I had this sudden urge to give her something,” Lyons begins. “I ran to my room to grab the gold puzzle ring my grandparents gave me for my Bar Mitzvah. I told her it meant more to me than anything I owned and I wanted her to have it because I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her and Davis. I never dreamed I’d be proposing when everything was shut down, but as soon as things opened up again, we’d choose her perfect engagement ring together.”

Katie and Lyons know a thing or two about weddings, as they work together at Bliss Bridal in Fairhope, and their wedding was one for the ages. The duo wanted a ‘50s supper club atmosphere, with a live band playing music from the Rat Pack and florals befitting that era. Katie recalls, “Our wedding cake even matched one of Frank Sinatra’s, which said ‘Best Wishes from The Sands.’”

Of the wedding, Katie says, ”The most important thing about our ceremony was having my son Davis stand with us through our vows. We wanted him to know that day marked the commitment we were making to him as much as we were to each other.” Lyons expresses what every bride wants to hear, telling us, ”When I first saw her walking down the aisle, she took my breath away, literally, and I had to summon everything I had not to cry. At that moment, she was all that I knew and all that I saw.”

Katie surprised Lyons by changing into a different dress during the reception.

“Thinking back to seeing Katie emerge in her one-of-kind glitter wedding dress always puts a smile on my face. I’m not a fan of glitter at all—I call it Photos by Visual Society Inc

‘the devil’s dust’—but after seeing my angel sparkling in that dress, I had a complete change of heart.” While the reception was filled with memory-making moments, Katie’s favorite was at the end. “We decided to have a final dance together privately after the guests left. We danced to ‘One For My Baby,’ which perfectly completed the evening.”

The honeymoon was spent at Rosemary Beach. “It was lovely to relax at such a beautiful spot without having to travel too far. Of course, like all honeymoons, it wasn’t long enough,” Katie jokes. Saving the best news for last, they share that they’re expecting Baby Yellin in August.

We couldn’t think of a happier ending (and beginning) for Katie, Lyons, and Davis.

Conveniently located between Mobile and Baldwin County, the Banquet Room offers customizable table layouts for room flow, personal servers and chef, private restrooms, elevator access, and more. The big bonus? Crisp white linens, the perfect white cross-back chairs, tables, and flatware are included. The 2,000 square-feet venue can accommodate 30 to 100 guests.

Then there’s the food. With customizable menu options, staying on budget is easy. Rebecca

works directly with each client to ensure complete satisfaction. Brides and hosts are able to choose from a cash bar to a complimentary full bar stocked with premium liquors or even bring in a dessert (if they’re able to pass on the legendary Key lime pie and bread pudding). “For those wanting all the flavors of home, I suggest starting out with fan favorites like our fire-grilled oysters, petite crab cakes, and stuffed mushrooms with crab dressing.

And never forget the gumbo!” Rebecca adds.

The Access team easily gives Rebecca a glowing review. With a degree in Strategic Communications from the University of South Alabama, she graduated cum laude and was the treasurer of Lambda Pi Eta Communications Honor Society. With a nostalgic nod, Rebecca adds, “Chi Omega taught me a lot of the networking, time management, and the largescale party planning skills I use today. My job as a suite attendant for the Mobile BayBears provided hands-on catering experience. I would juggle anywhere from four to 12 suites while serving companies and professional athletes!”

Rebecca works with those planning small weddings, rehearsal dinners, and other family and friend celebrations, from anniversaries to showers as well as corporate events. “We have company Christmas parties, work retreats, presentations, and training sessions, too. I’ve literally done it all!” she jokes.

Sharing the fact that certain times of the year get booked far in advance, she recommends trying to reserve the private space at least three months prior to the event but admits, “We pulled off a company dinner in just two weeks!”

Backing up her experience with old-fashioned elbow grease, she adds, “From the first call to event completion, I am the client’s go-to person for everything! I can even assist with outside vendors who can execute requests we don’t fill and help select event timing around the sunset.”

And for those who support going green, it’s good to know this restaurant’s sustainable practices. The Original Oyster House became the first restaurant in the state to recycle oyster shells through the AL Coastal Foundation. Once the recycled shells are cleaned and cured, some are placed in tanks with microscopic oyster larvae, which then attach to the shells for oyster gardening. The Original Oyster House further pledged its commitment by being one of the only restaurants to “oyster garden” or grow stocker oysters for reef restoration through the Mobile Oyster Gardening Program.

From recycling shells, to helping restore the reef, to giving back to the community, the Original Oyster House is making more than great food—they’re making a difference and it’s a hometown hit.

However, having the privilege to watch her work and ask questions allows us a glimpse into the depths of her talent, and her rendition of Peter Pan does not disappoint.

Having spent several hours at a recent rehearsal for the company’s upcoming Peter Pan performance, we learned the depths of Katia’s intricate process of creating a customized ballet sure to appeal to locals of all ages. So much more than choreography, we were left in awe and truly wondering what it must be like inside the mind of this quiet, creative force.

On one hand, she’s every bit a patient teacher giving each student the time and direction needed in her soft-spoken yet firm manner. On the other hand, when it comes to the creation of the actual performance and all the details that entails, she’s fiercely focused, driven, and knows exactly what she wants. Leading with both hands, her vision is non-negotiable and she always finds a way to make possible the impossible. .Her recent adaptation of Disney’s Princess and the Frog was met with rave reviews and sold-out performances as she chose an African-American lead, changed the story’s origins from New Orleans to Mobile throughout the songs and sets, and added live singers to a classical ballet to provide one of the most engaging events the Bay has seen to date—and she’s done it again with J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan. Originally produced in 1904, the story and characters of Peter Pan have stood the test of time.

From fair-winged fairy Tinker Bell to the boy who will never grow up, Peter Pan himself, in addition to the frightful Captain Hook, the Lost Boys, Tiger Lily, and the Darling children, Wendy, John, and Michael, the characters and their adventurous trip to Neverland are as classic and unforgettable as they come.

Getting right to the point, Katia shares what her rendition offers, “My Peter Pan is family-friendly and fun. It is not a classical ballet with tutus and slow music. If you have never been to the ballet, this is a good one to explore. I laugh and smile every time I watch it.”

But producing this show hasn’t been without challenges. In fact, Katia spent four years finessing it into being. It required many friends and stars to align in the form of collaborations, since the cost of the music, choreography, and production rights remain simply too exorbitant for smaller companies. Quite brilliantly, Mobile Ballet has worked closely with other ballet organizations in surrounding areas to share costs, talent, and more in order to achieve their goals.

The first star to align was Todd Allen, the Northwest Florida Ballet (NFB) Director based in Fort Walton Beach. “Todd asked my husband, Israel, and me to create and choreograph a modernized Peter Pan. After years of looking for something special, we realized the use of projections would speak to this tech-savvy generation while adding an exciting Broadway show element, and the result is incredible!” Katia says. And, we concur because, if you’re of a certain age, who can’t recall honing in on Sandy Duncan as she flew through the air as Peter Pan to see if you could catch a glimpse of those invisible wires? Now, these treasured characters can take flight all over the theater! “It literally allows us to expand into other dimensions,” Israel, also a film director, in charge the technology aspects, tells us.

The second star to align was American composer David Ott. Nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for

Music four times and the Grammys twice, David Ott eventually found his way to Florida. He held the appointment of Pace Eminent Scholar and Composer in Residence at the University of West Florida, founded and directed the Philharmonic Orchestra of Northwest Florida, started the foundation Music for Healing, and more. “David is renowned and incredibly creative. As the conductor of the NFB Symphony Orchestra, he offered to create a new composition for my Peter Pan adaptation. I couldn’t say no to someone this talented and we knew it would be a unique experience for our dancers. It was an incredible partnership,” Katia beams.

Another point of pride is the live orchestra. “A live orchestra is magical and even more meaningful with musicians from this area. Our collaborations make us stronger and our relationship with NFB enables us to exchange musicians from our local symphonies as well as dancers and entire productions,” says Katia, adding, “Knowing there is so much talent in Mobile and having the opportunity to bring them together at the same time allows this community to enjoy a high level of artistry. Additionally, a company member’s father is one of the musicians who will be playing with the ensemble. How cool is that?”

With the music and choreography nailed down, Katia engaged confidante and costume designer extraordinaire Brisa Alonso from Mexico City, with whom she has enjoyed a great working relationship on past projects. “I explained that I was looking for more contemporary costumes, different from the movie or cartoons. We started working on ideas online and she did an amazing job.

She’s great at reading my mind!” Katia jokes. “Some of the costumes were also created by our beloved Dorothy Lister, Ballet Mistress and Costume Designer at NFB. Unfortunately we lost her in October 2021. I feel blessed to have worked beside such a legend and to have wonderful memories of her, especially with Peter Pan.” Next was Katia’s sister Luly Garza. An architect, actress, and producer in Mexico City, Katia and Todd Allen asked Luly to create the scenery, considering it had to be extraordinary and bring their vision to life. “It incorporates specially made platforms that move constantly to create a magical environment in conjunction with the special projections and lighting,” notes Katia. “Since I started my career, my sister has always been helpful and I feel lucky that even today she is always there to help me. I think her work is brilliant.”

Of course there are also the talented performers. “Along with the Mobile Ballet company and studio dancers, we’re happy to welcome six male guest artists: Wyatt Mier of NFB returns to dance the lead role of Peter Pan; Daniel 76 ACCESS Magazine / March 2022

Benavides will be dancing the role of Captain Hook; and Agustin de Sousa will perform as Mr. Darling and as a Pirate. Also joining us as Pirates are Marsalis Rene Anderson-Clausell and Juan Guillermo Arango Villa of Ballet Pensacola, along with Max Murdock from Fort Walton Beach,” she shares.

On the heels of The Princess and the Frog’s success, we wonder if she’s feeling pressure. “The beloved story of Princess Tiana, the music and singers, and of course having Victoria Blakely dancing the lead role—many things together sparked people’s interest and I could not be more pleased with the response, so I knew Mobile is ready for a show like Peter Pan. And the cast is ready,” she shares, adding with a wink, “On a side note, my mom, who is my biggest critic, thinks it is the best thing I’ve ever done!”

Always goal-oriented, Katia tells us, “I’d love to introduce as many kids to the ballet as possible. Not only to watch the shows, but to experience dance of any kind. Artistic activity promotes intellectual development, stimulates the brain, and increases memory capacity, attention, and concentration.

Simply put, better education leads to a better future for all our kids, and in turn, a better future for Mobile.” Naturally, donor support is essential as community support is vital to their success.

Perhaps saving the best news for last, Katia tells us, “Israel and I are renewing our contracts with Mobile Ballet! We are even planning the upcoming season with Swan Lake in the spring, a 35th anniversary gala in October and The Nutcracker in December. Our brains are in constantly active, thinking of ways we can bring the best to Mobile!”

The charming streets of Fairhope transform into one of the nation’s largest (and oldest) art events celebrating artists from around the country. The prestigious show attracts artists from California to New York and even as far away as England. It has become synonymous with Fairhope receiving mentions from major publications like The New York Times and Southern Living.

More than a shop-portunity, it’s a juried art show, ensuring all of the art is of superior quality as artists are hand-selected from hundreds of applicants. This year marks the festival’s 70th year, and it is expected to be better than ever before. Here are my tips for getting the most out of Fairhope’s biggest weekend of the year.

MAKE A PLAN

COME HUNGRY AND STAY LATE

Naturally, a little planning will make all the difference. Whether you’re a bride-to-be in search of unique gifts for your bridal party or looking to spend quality time with your besties over champagne-fueled lunch and shopping, winding through the flower-lined streets in pursuit of handcrafted finds will melt the stress away. Visit their detailed website ahead of the event for a complete list of artists divided by categories.

There, you will find everything from handmade jewelry to functional crafts like wooden toys. You can also view the map and figure out the best route to take around town. With more than 230 booths to browse, you want to make sure you know where to find that custom painted Easter bucket for your favorite niece!

What’s a good festival without good food? Arrive early and start with a signature latte from Provision. The friendly staff and handwritten notes on to-go cups always make me smile. Of course, if you spot their signature bubble machine turning out suds on their sidewalk, then that calls for a mimosa—it is the weekend, after all.

Located on Magnolia Avenue between Section Street and Bancroft Street, you’ll find the festival food court lined with dozens of options to satisfy your cravings. Try something new at Island Noodles, like Hawaiian wok-fried soba noodles, or turn to local food truck favorite Empanadas ‘N More for a LatinAmerican-inspired treat. If classic burgers are what you’re craving, you can’t go wrong with Bleus Burger, a truck out of Gulf Shores. Traditional carnival food staples including funnel cakes and chicken on a stick can also be found.

If table service dining is more your style, downtown Fairhope is home to some of the best restaurants in Alabama. From the truffle fries at Thyme on Section to the tuna stack at Master Joe’s Sushi, it’s hard to go wrong in this foodie town. The Bone & Barrel’s spacious deck usually has live music, and Dragonfly Foodbar’s creative tacos offer unexpected flavor combinations.

Don’t forget that these spots are open for dinner, so you can usually find a seat once the festival crowds are gone. If you’re looking for something a little fancier, the Fairhope Inn is an excellent choice, but call ahead for reservations!

Speaking of staying late for dinner, Fairhope’s favorite Friday night concert series, Live at Five at the Halstead Amphitheater, will host Molly Thomas and the Rare Birds starting at 5:00 PM, followed by Sister Hazel. (Get your tickets early at LiveAtFiveFairhope.com.) After the concert, swing by the Tongue and Groove Drinkery or The Little Whiskey for a nightcap.

OR JUST STAY THE NIGHT After that action-packed Friday, why not turn your girls’ day into a girls’ weekend with a stay at a bayside bungalow? A few overnight accommodations to check out are Lucia Blue Cottages on the Bluff, Jubilee Suites, and Little Point Clear, as they offer quaint Southern hospitality and modern amenities in abundance. Take your staycation to the next level with treatments from lashes and facials to massages and manicures at Fairhope’s newest day spa and salon, Orange Hibiscus. It’s divine and they can transport you to and from the festival on their orange multi-passenger golf cart!

Making a long weekend out of your visit to the Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival also gives you time to venture outside of just downtown. Stroll on the boardwalk at The Grand Hotel in Point Clear or head over to what we locals call the “warehouse district” for a craft beer at Fairhope Brewing Company or the seasonal wine flight at The Hope Farm across the street. Both venues are planning live music all weekend. Warehouse Bakery & Donuts is also a must-try if you’re over that way.

HEAD INSIDE If you spend your first day cruising the artist tents in the streets, take your second day in town to hit the local hot spots on the sidewalks. Fairhope’s local boutiques are armed and ready with spring’s latest styles for fashion fans. CK Collection and Sway on Fairhope Avenue are a must-shop. Over on Section Street, you’ll find Sadie’s, Stephanie’s Downtown, and Christina Lynn’s tucked into the French Quarter. If you’re more into athleisure looks you’ll love Seven South (I have my eye on their white On Cloud kicks with leather trim). And, since the sun will be shining, hit up JJ Eyes for fashion-forward frames that will carry you through the Festival and beyond.

Moving from fashion to furnishings, home décor enthusiasts will find that Fairhope has become quite the hub for retailers focused on unique interiors. A few new spots have popped up recently, including Interwoven (corner of Church St. and Fairhope Ave.), which has excellent home accents, and Vesta Taylor Lighting and Design on Section Street, offering some incredible light fixtures. Antique hunters will find the rug of their dreams at Crown and Colony, and if festive glassware is on your shopping list, you’ve got to check out the Estelle Colored Glass at Living Well. If you’re looking for kids or grandkids, be sure to check out Gigi & Jay’s, Tiny Town, and (my personal favorite downtown store since I was about three years old), Fantasy Island Toys.

DON’T FORGET YOUR COMMEMORATIVE ARTWORK TO REMEMBER THE WEEKEND Each year, the foundation commissions an artist to serve as the featured artist for the show. It is a sought-after honor in the art community, and the featured artist’s work serves as the centerpiece of the event. It appears on all promotional materials and commemorative merchandise; limited-edition art prints are available exclusively at the Festival. Collectors of the Festival’s official artwork are in for a real treat this year as Fairhope’s own Jo Patton has been named as the featured artist for this platinum jubilee.

Patton’s artwork is synonymous with Fairhope, often depicting piers and coastal scenes, and can be seen all over town from Thomas Hospital to the city’s beloved Civic Center Mural. The featured work is titled “Building Memories” and focuses on what she refers to as her best memories, the years she spent raising children on the beach right here in Fairhope. It’s a memory that locals and visitors alike can relate to.

REMEMBER IT’S ALL FOR A GOOD CAUSE If all this shopping leaves you ready to rest, remember it is all for a good cause. What started years ago as an event to promote tourism for the city has since become a local tradition that helps support the arts community that the town is famous for. Six years ago, the Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival Foundation was created, ensuring all proceeds go back into the community to foster the arts through grants for organizations and student scholarships.

The prestigious show brings a huge spotlight to our small town and many small businesses and attracts artists and visitors from all over. The Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival is a must-do event for any Fairhope lover, and when done right, it can be the perfect girls’ getaway.

Hello, When was the last time you did something purely for yourself? Be honest.

Maybe you don’t have time and you’ve always been someone who puts everyone else first. You shoulder the burdens beautifully because people need you. You’re strong—it’s all in a day’s work for any good wife, mother, and woman anyway, and it feels good to be needed. At the same time, you’ve been fighting off the feeling that you’re unappreciated for a while now. Your basic human needs have gone neglected since you’ve been so busy taking care of everyone else’s. And people love all the things you do for them, or “couldn’t function” without you. But what about you?

From birth, women are conditioned to do for others. We learn and are expected to give, to do, to help, to care, to agree, to accommodate, to go above and beyond—and to do it all with a sweet smile on our faces. And when we don’t? Well, you’re causing a problem, you are the problem or you should fix your attitude. Oh, and you should smile more while you’re at it. From day one, we’re taught that our worth comes from doing for others and to conform to the expectations placed upon us and that this is how it’s supposed to be. If we don’t do for everyone else, we’ve failed. Asking for something or expecting a return? Well, that’s just selfish and now you’re nagging. If we don’t behave as according to the unspoken code of pleasantry conduct because of our normal human needs and normal spectrum of human emotions, we’re suddenly “crazy.”

Seriously, even with hormones aside, it’s no wonder anxiety disorders predominantly occur in women. We are held personally responsible (by society, by our families, and by ourselves) for singlehandedly cleaning up the world’s messes, resulting in all our time spent trying to hold it and ourselves together. This is not sustainable. The evidence?

Look to your medical records, doctor’s recommendations, and what your therapist has most likely told you. Or have you not made the time to attend any of those appointments?

You might be willing to sacrifice your mental health, especially for the “good of your family.” You may not even realize how affected you truly are, so all this sounds like nonsense. But your physical body, can only take so much mental stress. Mark my words, ladies. If you refuse to press pause and take care of yourself and what your body needs, your body will do that for you—and off to the doctor or ER you’ll go.

If all of the above is coming across a little too in-your-face, it’s only because I want women everywhere to stop looking outward for a minute and look inward. Do you feel like you’re running on empty? Dealing with a sense of hopelessness? Experiencing an apathy toward life in general? it’s time to take the time you need and make those appointments for yourself.

Do this for you and for your loved ones, who need you to be well.

Dishing with WESTON Top local chef Weston Simpson is not only the proud owner and operator of Mobile’s latest hit restaurant, West Food Bar, he’s also a private chef and quite the foodie. Noting the Bay’s food scene is moving on up, he shares wedding trends to encourage brides and event planners, thereby avoiding the ho-hum, same old fare. Considering 2022 will boast more weddings than ever before, here, his tasty tips.

Hey there, fellow foodies!

As a chef and a social person who attends countless events, nothing says “thank you” or “I love you” to your guests more than serving thoughtful cuisine. And the best part is that doesn’t always require spending more.

Today’s food scene is churning and burning with inspirational crowdpleasing ideas. For starters, more personalized food menus are gaining popularity. Couples will be choosing their menu based on things that are meaningful to them or their families. Items can range from a gumbo inspired by the Sunday family lunch the bride grew up with to a dish the couple adores from a favorite restaurant. Another example of this is cultural menus.

If you have a heritage or culture that means a lot to you, choose to incorporate it into your wedding day menu.

Because more couples are personalizing their menu choices, that means more comfort food options. I’m talking mac and cheese or pizza. Naturally, a good caterer can make these options a bit more upscale with a few ingredients and how they’re served or presented will make all the difference.

At my restaurant, we spin down-home Southern favorites into glorious modern dishes like buttermilk fried quail with a bourbon cranberry sauce and a boudin dirty rice cake and a Gulf shrimp angel hair pasta dish topped with a creamy lemon blanc and fresh basil oil.

Another comfort food opportunity is brunch. This is especially popular when couples are choosing a morning or midday wedding time. Think chicken and waffles, avocado toast, hot donuts, breakfast tacos, mimosas, and more. What could be better?

I’m excited to see brides and grooms serving more locally sourced foods like meats, seafood, and produce at their receptions. This is not only a way to support the community, but it’s also a way to connect your out-of-town guests to what you love about your hometown. Naturally, add the source to your food descriptions so guests are aware. A great way to start this is by finding a local restaurant to cater your wedding.

While late night snacks aren’t exactly new, they’re here to stay and couples are getting more personal with their choices. For example, couples are choosing to serve their favorite movie night snacks or fast food items. You can’t beat the price and guests will rave about this for years to come.

Think Krispy Kreme doughnuts, McDonald’s cheeseburgers and fries, and more. The sky is the limit, even at the fanciest wedding.

As you’ve probably noticed in recent years, couples are choosing cake alternatives. Many still have a small, decorative cake for cutting purposes while offering guests customizable options like an ice cream sundae bar, a dessert display offering mini assortments of pie, cookies, macarons, parfaits and of course, doughnuts. Creating displays is great fun and the effort results in guests feeling loved.

COCKTAIL KING Matt LeMond is a familiar face around downtown Mobile. A successful entrepreneur, he owns and operates several food and libation hot spots—think POST Crafted Cocktails & Wine Bar, O’Daly’s Irish Pub, Cedar Street Social, and his newest destinations, The Outsider Sports Lounge, and The Insider Food Hall. Sharing insider scoop on POST’s craft cocktail classes and historical Mint Julep tidbits, Matt makes a good case for continuing education of the best kind.

As we cruise out of Mardi Gras, we know Bay locals like to keep the good times rolling.

When we started our now famed cocktail classes at POST, we couldn’t imagine the incredible response we’d get. Combining historical bar facts with instructed DIY cocktail creating, the classes are fun and educational in all the right ways.

Mixologist Tyler Sayers is our energetic instructor and always ensures guests have the best time possible. Open to groups of all kinds, this interactive mixer is a unique way for couples to celebrate their nuptials with friends and family, especially those coming from faraway places.

Since the craft cocktail moment shows no signs of stopping, we schedule a constant stream of classes and feedback tells us it’s a big hit. Everyone who’s participated has thoroughly enjoyed bonding with their classmates, picking up a few historical facts about the tools used to create these concoctions, and of course, drinking the results of their efforts. Each guest is provided the necessary tools and ingredients, and laughter fills the room as Tyler guides his guests.

Most are surprised to learn the odd-yet-fascinating history of common bar tools. For example, the jigger is a tool used to easily pour 1.5 ounces of alcohol into a drink. One theory is it got its name during the heyday of the British navy. Each sailor would get a daily ration of rum or gin, and as the story goes, the sailors nicknamed the measuring device after the lowest sail on the jiggermast, the fourth mast on a sailing ship. Another theory is that “jigger” is a derivation of “thingamajig.” Since thingamajig is a made-up word used to refer to something that’s not yet named or something with a name you can’t remember, the tool may have simply gotten a nonsensical nickname that stuck.

Cocktail strainers are another interesting bar tool with a long history. Though cocktail strainers may be related to ancient Chinese tea strainers, it was around the 1880s that a variation of the julep strainer emerged. Also known as the Hawthorne strainer, this tool paired a slotted piece of metal with a spring around the edge. Some tales state the springs were taken from old beds.

Knowing strainers arose around the same time ice became widely available in the 1880s, the julep strainer was the first type of commercially sold strainer. It emerged around the same time as the Mint Julep, a Southern favorite cocktail, but the connection between the two is murky. The American Mint Julep doesn’t require straining since it’s usually made and served in the same glass, but one theory suggests the strainer used to be served in the glass to keep ice away from the drinker’s teeth. Another story is that it would be presented with the drink and the drinker could use it to keep his mustache dry. Regardless of how you serve it, the Bay area loves a Mint Julep and hands down, POST offers the best around. Acquiring a few behind-the-bar skills and cocktail trivia makes for great small talk. After all, who doesn’t want to be witty?

Pantone’s color of the year, Veri Peri, is a rich lavender that will spark your creativity. Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams and Behr are showing us that green is the new neutral with their 2022 selections of October Mist, Evergreen Fog, and Breezeway, respectively. Combining these colors bring the outdoors inside and will be perfect for any setting.

The reemergence of chinoiserie, gilded bamboo, toile and pagodas adds the perfect frivolity to this color duo. The current relaxed design trends are making way for chinoiserie’s 17thcentury classic comeback!

Think furniture, wallpaper, and decorative items, and I love an Asian-inspired metallic wallpaper in a powder room!

Southern influencer Charlotte Kilborn Carey astutely noted Carnival has inspired everything from fashion to interior design for 2022. And that’s globally, we might add! Here, she shares her inspiring royal mood board for living and giving.

I suggest being decadent and covering your master suite in this Balinese Peacock print in wallpaper and fabric by Scalamandré. Try a gilded bamboo light fixture for an easy breakfast nook refresh. Hang a few pagoda prints and place your monogrammed linen napkins in chic bamboo napkin rings to round out the look. In living areas, try an on-theme lamp to elevate the ambience.
