ith much to celebrate, the team at ACCESS has been blissfully busy. From covering various galas to taking multiple field trips to get to know some of the Bay’s most fascinating women, we certainly put the miles into this issue, but that’s where we shine! For example, taking time to trek out to Calvert to meet Tamara Weinert and learn about Outokumpu and how she manages it was an absolute ball and an incredible learning experience in terms of leadership insight and what this company means to our community. Also, spending a day with Fairhope realtor extraordinaire Michelle Bigler and her family provided several lessons in not only how this one woman does it all, but in humanity as well. As we were happily hopping around her bayfront home snapping pictures, we came across what I suppose was meant to be “cruel and cool” vandalism. Someone had spray painted a child’s play boat with the big hateful words “I’m Gay.” Having Michelle’s adoring and talented son and partner with us, we were shocked, but at the same time saw it as an opportunity to turn what was meant to be hateful into an artful message of love. As the holidays approach, we hope you’re surrounded with love and see all the dedication that goes into creating ACCESS, as it’s a true labor of love for us. Watching this community grow on every level has been a fascinating journey. It’s our greatest hope that you enjoy the work we do and spread the love. Lastly, we sincerely appreciate our readers and clients and wish you all a wonderful holiday season. See you next year!

A GALA with H E A R T Guests dressed to the nines, a divinely decorated venue, gourmet cuisine, Grecian music, and the chance to catch up with friends — the Greek Fest Charity Gala is back! Diamond Sponsors Saad Healthcare, Saad Realty Partners, and The Malbis Memorial Foundation (plus too many other sponsors to list) contributed to the success of this must-attend event. A monument to good taste and a good time, all for an even better cause, the community came together for Mobile’s beloved Penelope House. By Amber Wielkens Photos Layla Lambert, l-egantportraits.com

onsidered one of Mobile’s tastiest traditions for decades, Greek Fest is a popular (one might say essential) November must-do, but six years ago, Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church added a charity gala to kick off the four-day celebration of Greek culture. The brainchild of longtime church members Greg and Jamie Saad, the Greek Fest Charity Gala quickly gained traction and a founding group was formed. Their mission? To serve others in need by raising awareness and supporting local charities through a broad-based community collaboration.

Board Member Dr. Dimitris Kyriazis of Cardiovascular Associates, P.C. + Gala Co-Vice Chair Dr. Stephanie Grosz of RGG Cardiology, P.C. 6 ACCESS Magazine / December 2021

“Funds raised this year will go to Penelope House, a shelter providing refuge for victims of domestic violence and their children. In addition, they help them gain social and economic independence through counseling, legal aid, and referrals to community resources,” says Dr. Stephanie Grosz, this year’s co-vice chair and wife to board member Dr. Dimitris Kyriazis. “We will be giving them over $115,000. Penelope house has struggled like most during the pandemic, but also in ways not considered. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, they’ve been especially stretched to find space for their clients while the need is even greater. It’s our hope this donation will help them with expansion to assist this vulnerable group of people.” Stephanie fondly adds, “It’s been a collaborative effort to bring the gala to life, with everyone bringing their talents forward. First Horizon Commercial Banking Executive Lawrence Ford, Jr., known as Russ is also our current president — we probably won’t ever let him quit! The gala committee is a wonderful, talented, and dedicated group. Russ Ford and Greg Saad are the fundraisers. Ryane and Scott Fulgham have taken over the auction. I’ve somehow become the design person, and Ryane was also the chair this year, picking up all the miscellaneous jobs a chair gets stuck with — she was phenomenal!” And the dreamy décor? “It centered around a beautiful china pattern with butterflies I found,” says Stephanie. “We’ve tried to make every year a unique experience. Carl Clark at Southern Veranda along with Allen Bailey have been part of the creative team from the beginning. They’ve taken this event to heart and raise the bar each year, building installations in our foyer for photos and as a grand entrance. This year, they created a truly magical garden of trees, greenery, and butterflies.” Did we forget to mention the food? Alec Naman, no stranger to Greek cuisine, showcased his considerable talents. Lollipop lamb chops, artichoke and feta flatbread, and chicken kabob starters, a choice of phyllo-wrapped snapper or a veal chop with moussaka as the main course, and Greek honey puffs (Loukoumades) and, of course, ouzo for dessert. Guests enjoyed live music from the Greek Muses through the cocktail hour, auction, and dinner. With over $500,000 raised since the first gala, this hardworking and altruistic group and the sponsors who support their efforts are a reflection of Greek culture at its core — they help each other and anyone in need, as Stephanie beautifully explains, “We consider this a Mobile event, not just a Greek community event. We have as many non-Greeks as Greeks every year. We’re working to help those in need and all are welcome.”

SPECIAL PROMOTION

HOL I DAY H E A LT H Q&A The holidays are here, and with them a rise in poor eating habits and waning exercise routines. But fear not! Alabama Medical Group Internal Medicine physicians Dr. Brandon F. Bodie and Dr. Thomas F. Garth are here to offer helpful tips on how to keep the holiday pounds (and their resounding effects on your overall health) at bay. By Jessica Goolsby

Q: As we approach the winter months (where people generally stay indoors more and eat heartier meals), what are some common mistakes you feel people make in terms of their health around the holidays?

folks and may serve as a good supplement for chips. Search for healthier alternatives for common casseroles such as sweet potato-based casseroles. Also, people can consider utilizing less salt or using coconut oil as a base oil.

A: Brandon F. Bodie, M.D. As the weather turns colder and the sun sets earlier, it’s easier than at any other time of the year to justify coming home after work, putting one’s feet up, and staying inactive. Thanksgiving and Christmas are two days where I generally advise people that it’s okay to celebrate in glorious fashion, even in feasting. However, eating heavy nonstop is a recipe for gaining weight during the holidays.

Q: What are some good practices folks could put into place to curb the urge to over-indulge during the holidays?

Q: What are some of the most common excuses you hear patients make when discussing weight gain over the holidays? A: Brandon F. Bodie, M.D. People who gain weight over the holidays often attribute the pounds gained to truthful etiologies — dining with friends and family, attending multiple holiday gatherings, and having less time to cook at home. Though valid, it overlooks the principle that it is much easier to stay weight neutral than it is to lose weight later down the road. A: Thomas F. Garth, M.D. They stop working out and don’t watch intake as closely during vacations/ holidays. Q: We all know much of the food at holiday gatherings can be quite fattening or generally unhealthy in nature (think LOADS of butter and salt). What are some healthier alternatives you might suggest folks offer to bring for holiday meals that will still be welcomed additions to the menu?

A: Brandon F. Bodie, M.D. Eating a salad as an appetizer and vegetables with an entrée are great ways to fill one’s stomach with wholesome fiber that provides a sense of fullness, maintains regularity, and keeps one guilt-free when that inevitable pumpkin pie comes calling. A: Thomas F. Garth, M.D.. Intentionally slow down and enjoy the meal at hand and the company around you, trying not to overeat. Eat pieces of dessert treats instead of an entire plate-full of them. Q: We know we need to put in the physical work, too. What are some of the best exercises to implement for those just getting started on a wellness track? A: Brandon F. Bodie, M.D. For those getting started, I recommend a mixture of both aerobic and strength training activities. A brisk walk outside is a great way to get one’s heart pumping and feel great. As one’s activity level increases, they can add either distance or speed. There are also numerous at-home services offering live and on demand courses with optional purchase of their branded equipment. A: Thomas F. Garth, M.D. Walking, elliptical machines, and yoga are great options for many newcomers that are able to participate. I personally recommend Village Yoga studio in Mobile and Health Fix in Saraland. Q: Stress and overeating are definite bedfellows. How would you advise your patients to mitigate the inevitable stress that often surrounds the holidays?

A: Brandon F. Bodie, M.D. I suggest cooking with olive oil over butter in recipes that allow it. Mediterranean-style cooking with grilled meats and vegetables offers the perfect combination of healthy feasting and delectable tastes! In addition, there are also some amazing desserts that use avocado as a base.

A: Thomas F. Garth, M.D. Intentionally take some deep breaths during the hectic holidays. Just slow down to remind yourself about what is most important in life. Try to mindfully respond during the chaotic moments rather than mindlessly react. Let a healthy love for yourself and others anchor you during the storms, as they, too, shall pass.

A: Thomas F. Garth, M.D. Take the time to look at some vegetable platters that you can bring. For example, homemade roasted kale takes a little more time to prepare but tastes great to a lot of

Q: Alcoholic beverages also often go hand-inhand with holiday gatherings. What are some healthier (i.e. less sugary/fattening) alternatives for our libations this year?

30 ACCESS Magazine / December 2021

A: Brandon F. Bodie, M.D. Though every class of alcohol has its pros/cons and can be abused in excess, red wine has arguably the best benefit to risk ratio, with some studies showing improvement in HDL (the good cholesterol) and improvement in cardiovascular health as a result. A: Thomas F. Garth, M.D. San Pellegrino and ice water in a dixie cup (because no one will know the difference except you). Q: Give us your best advice for that “New Year, New You” mindset so many fall victim to as January 1 approaches. A: Brandon F. Bodie, M.D. Life is a marathon, not a sprint! Rather than focus on the first two weeks of 2022, focus instead on a small, adjustable life change you can implement in January 2022 for the first few weeks. Then, once that habit is solidified, start implementing another positive habit. A: Thomas F. Garth, M.D. You have one life, so live it right. Life is a series of challenges, and it is up to you to find the opportunity to never miss an opportunity to learn. Turn a new leaf as this new year arrives and start doing what you know is right. Get fired up about this change for good and surround yourself with the right people to continue to maintain the momentum in the right direction.

rue confession? The ACCESS team is a big fan of Dr. Amy McCoy, and we have been for a long time. Possessing all the qualities of a woman who literally does it all, she makes it seem oh-so-effortless to boot. An esteemed practitioner and a star in the field of OB-GYN, she’s able to deliver both babies and straight talk in a manner that makes patients laugh and feel better regarding all those female trials and tribulations, ranging from a lack of sex drive to low energy. Smart as a whip and no stranger to an ACCESS photoshoot, she also loves the pampered glam her daily routine doesn’t permit, but we’ve learned her one rule — no hair straightening! Known for her wild locks, Amy prefers to stay true to her tresses. In total agreement, we oblige, acknowledging they’ve reached trademark status. A born leader with more accolades than we can count, Amy plays an active role in her patients’ care while being a cheerleader for all the practitioners

at Bay Area Physicians for Women. “Our practice is second-to-none in caring for women of all ages,” she shares. “I want our community to know about the services we offer and our superb medical team and specialists who offer the highest level of expertise. Since we’re entirely independent, we’re able to adapt to changing patient needs more quickly.” This is in addition to managing the group’s social media and getting the word out about new talent and technology at the practice. While her credentials and patient reviews speak for themselves, Amy’s more than your average OB-GYN. “Easy to talk to” would be first on our list, because asking your doctor about intimate things can be hard, but not with her. Seriously, ask her anything and she’ll simply answer or gently correct inaccurate information. “I’ve had some interesting discussions and even removals of things the internet said would fix a problem,” she says. “If something sounds like it might work, ask your doctor if it’s safe. I’m here to help you, not judge you, and no question is too silly to ask.”

her. I truly believe my experiences have helped me sympathize and understand what my patients are going through.” Returning to chatting about her family, she adds, “Clay is an Engineering Consulting Manager with the Alabama Department of Transportation. He loves being on the water, fishing, and playing tennis. He’d never played tennis and tried it after my mom got him a gift card a few years ago. Now he’s obsessed. He also loves building things; our garage is always full of his projects— the most recent was a 20-foot boat he built from scratch. I always ask him to build me something for Christmas because it means more to me than anything he could buy,” she proudly shares. Regarding their children, Amy’s eyes light up. “Jackson is in eighth grade and loves drawing and tennis. In the sixth grade, Riley Cate enjoys basketball, volleyball, archery, and art,” she claims. Then come the animals. “We have a chocolate lab named Buddy, a cat named Oreo (rescued by the kids from a storm drain), and a bunny named Stormy we got when I lost a bet to Riley Cate,” she smiles. In their free time? “We spend a lot of time on the water. We always enter the Flora-Bama Fishing

Rodeo together; it’s a great family-friendly tournament. I look forward to it because we spend days together without electronics or other distractions. Both kids have won several first places and Riley Cate has even won Top Junior Angler,” she states. “We also like playing games and are addicted to ‘Incohearent Family Edition.’ We love to travel and explore new places. The kids are dying to go somewhere with snow!” The holidays are a beloved family tradition. “We go all out on outdoor decorations. I’ve always loved all-white lights but I’ve lost that battle. We’re now the Griswolds of our neighborhood. Clay and the kids put lights on every inch of our yard. We have every color of light, blow-ups, even lights shot into trees with a spear gun. This year, we’re planning to do the Rudolph movie if our 15-foot Rudolph gets here in time,” she chuckles. Turning indoors, she adds, “The kids and I enjoy baking cakes and cookies and making candy. Our iced sugar cookies are the family favorite to eat and to decorate. After what can be a hectic Christmas, the day after is reserved for downtime. “We spend a lazy day in our pajamas hanging out together. My mom and I love watching Hallmark

Committed to giving back, Amy is active in Junior League of Mobile, the South Alabama Alumni Association Board, and St. Paul’s Episcopal School, where her children attend. In her free time? “You can find me on the tennis court — it’s a great way to exercise and socialize at the same time. I also love baking, crafting, and being on the water,” she claims. We’re honestly not sure where she finds the time! One thing she always has time for is her family. Married to Clay for nearly 15 years, the couple met while Amy was was on a blind date with someone else. “I was trying to get my date to take me home and Clay came to my rescue. After calling a mutual friend to assure he was safe, he drove me home and it turned out we lived down the street from each other!” she exclaims. “We married and had our two children, Jackson (13) and Riley Cate (12) while I was in residency. Both pregnancies were high-risk due to preeclampsia and I had to deliver early. Riley Cate was a preemie at 35 weeks and had to stay in the NICU for a month,” she tells us. “I was so thankful we delivered at USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital both for the top-notch care and because I didn’t have to be separated from

Christmas movies, and my kids and husband tease me, saying, ‘Hmm, I wonder how this will turn out. Do you think they’ll fall in love?’ I know the stories are predictable, but it’s definitely a guilty pleasure.” As for her upbringing? “My dad was an orthodontist in the U.S. Air Force. We mainly lived along the Gulf Coast except for a period when we lived in Lakenheath, England. Moving every few years helped me learn to adjust in new situations and made me love meeting new people,” she says. She moved to Mobile to attend the University of South Alabama in the Early Acceptance Medical School Program. ”I like to say my family followed me to the area, as they moved to Fairhope while I was in college and my dad started South Alabama Orthodontics,” she jokes. Family and friends top her gratitude list, especially when it came to raising two young children while training to be a doctor. “I couldn’t have gotten through residency without my parents. I had to be at work at 6 a.m. and my dad would drive from Fairhope to meet me in the wee hours of the morning to get Jackson. My mom would work with him hanging out in her office. I recall people talking about making sure their babies were in bed by 7 p.m., but I would never have seen my children if they were in bed that early. We made a schedule that worked for us so we could spend quality time together,” she says. Amy tells us that even today, with two middleschoolers, it takes a village. “My husband does carpool most days, which intimidates the heck out of me,” she laughs. “I deal with some really scary and emergent situations, but nothing gives me anxiety like the carpool line!” We second Amy’s anxiety and raise her a parent-teacher conference. Continuing, she adds, “Recently, I was on the way to take my daughter and a friend to an activity and I got called for a delivery. I quickly reached out to a friend and begged for help. We couldn’t do it without family, friends, and even the school staff members helping us. Knowing all mothers suffer from mom guilt, my job definitely makes me have it, but I believe every family has their own issues and

nobody should judge other moms for doing what works for them.” With a strong family strategy in place, Amy’s successful career purview includes gynecology, obstetrics, and surgery alike. “I specialize in minimally invasive surgical techniques and obstetrics, but my practice is not limited at all,” she tells us. “Being an OB-GYN is one of the specialties with the craziest schedule,” she says, noting that only a day earlier, a plastic surgeon told her he doesn’t know how they do it all, much to her appreciation of someone understanding her many roles. “OB-GYNs do surgery, clinic, and deliver babies all in the same day, as well as seeing drop-in patients in labor and delivery who need you.” A few things she’d like us to know? “If I’m running late, I promise it’s for a good reason. People tend to think doctors who don’t deliver babies won’t run behind, but emergency gynecological surgeries throw our schedule off. Also, some appointments take longer since we don’t always know what’s going on until the patient’s there,” she explains. “I have the happiest job, bringing life into the world. Yet while that part is happy, we deal with a lot of unhappy things, too. Every pregnancy is not happy and healthy and we’re there helping moms with those emotional deliveries, as well. We diagnose people with cancer, give test results that sometimes affect marriages, and help patients with loss and infertility. So, yes, parts of my job are happy, but parts are emotionally draining. That being said, the emotional parts are equally worth it — those patients need us just as much.” See what we mean by calling Amy empathetic? When it comes to work-life balance, Amy’s offers advice which could benefit us all. “I’ve learned it’s okay to say no. We physically can’t do it all.” And that advice is perhaps the best gift of all and why she is, indeed, the real McCoy.

Think your job is tough? Try running a business in multiple countries! It’s just a day in the life for Tamara Weinert, President of Business Area Americas for Outokumpu (OTK). And if you think steel isn’t interesting, you’ll be as shocked as we were. Empowered by our hardhats and fascinated by every turn on our bumpy golf cart tour, awe doesn’t begin to cover it. With humor, passion, and a knack for listening, Tamara is a leader from whom we can all learn a thing or two. NERVES of STEEL

pending the day with Tamara Weinert was more than exhilarating. From her humble humor to her infectious passion for her company, it was easy to see how she’s a leader among so many men and women and adored by all. You can add the ACCESS team to her fan base, too. Honestly, we were like the most committed Harry Styles fans and probably came close to ridiculous, but it couldn’t be helped. Tamara energized and excited us with heaps of leadership inspiration and cemented the fact that big career dreams are truly possible regardless of your current path. Having heard about Tamara through an employee, ACCESS got to work securing an interview and photoshoot. She agreed to squeeze us in to her jet setting schedule even though she was a bit nervous about what a group of “fashion magazine people” might ask of her. Wanting to remain true to herself, Tamara chose options from her own closet and the photoshoot date was set. Weeks before our visit, we were sent a list of mandatory safety measures which brought home the fact that this is indeed a very serious and potentially dangerous place. Undeterred, we recalled how excited our community was when OTK decided to lay its foundation on

our sweet home Alabama soil. With it came incredible benefits for this community like a sea of employment opportunities and a hearty financial impact. And while it’s been humming along quite successfully, OTK is still a mystery to many of us. Like eager “Wizard of Oz” characters, we took to our own yellow brick road to Calvert where the sleepy country roads wind and weave until — wham! — a towering cluster of mysterious European-style buildings scraping the sky appeared out of nowhere. As we made our way through a security checkpoint that could rival most boarder operations, we headed up the long driveway. Mesmerized, we looked left, right, and straight ahead at the color-coded superstructures before us feeling like we had magically landed on a secret hidden futuristic movie set. As we pulled into headquarters we were greeted by kind faces and treated to breakfast as we set up to meet Tamara. Our level of giddiness was tangible, and before we knew it, Tamara appeared in the room with a

40 ACCESS Magazine / December 2021

gorgeous smile and offered a warm hello and fist pump — the unofficial Covid-19 handshake — to each of us. Clearly in charge but not intimidating, we were instantly smitten. As she sat in the makeup chair, we pulled on the required safety gear that included hardhats, coveralls, and steel-toe boots. Laughing like schoolgirls and disrupting the lip liner process, we fired questions at Tamara ranging from life on the Bay to European architecture. It was easy to see the many sides of Tamara through this carefree banter. Down to Earth, she even laughed at herself, making light of a few of her comments. Obviously, maintaining lightness is a key leadership skill. Without the ability to laugh at oneself, how else could one run offices in unique cultures around the world? From there, it kept getting better as she explained her complex personal journey to becoming the leading lady of OTK. With countless stamps on her passport and as president of business area Americas, she makes runs across the U.S. and to Central and South America more often than most of us run to the grocery store, all in the name of international business. Born in Germany, she has held residency in dream destinations all over the world including India, Pakistan, Singapore, Russia, The Netherlands, and Finland. What’s most important to consider is that it never occurred to Tamara to pursue a role outside of finance. “I joined the company in 2012, just before the merger between Outokumpu and Inoxum, the stainless steel arm of ThyssenKrupp at that time,” Tamara details. “I started as the Treasurer, then became the Head of Investor Relations. A pure communication role was not the best fit for me, so I moved on to become the CFO for Europe — a very challenging role in very challenging times.” In that role for three years, it was suggested by someone that noticed her potential that she try expanding her role from a finance capacity to that of a major leader. Going for it, Tamara took a leap of faith and switched roles, this time to take on commercial responsibilities as the Senior Vice President for OTK’s sales in the South of Europe (Italy, Spain, Portugal, and France), the Benelux, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Australia, as well as all exports to the Americas. “This was a great job, as it connected me with so many of our fabulous teams around the world with many very interesting cultural experiences,” she beams. Now serving as President of business area Americas for OTK, Tamara leads their business based in Calvert, Ala., as well as those in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, Argentina, and Brazil. “I work with many talented men and women to shape the business and operational functions of our mills and service centers that support our customer bases in the United States, Mexico, and South America,” she shares, which includes overseeing nearly 2,000 team members. “This includes our operations, safety, finance division, legal support, sales team, human resources, and many more divisions that equate to us operating in a healthy and safe environment.” As leader of the Americas Management Team (AMT), Tamara is also a member of the global Outokumpu Leadership Team, which is responsible for OTK’s global groups’ operations. Whew! Talk about a resume. The global leader in stainless steel, OTK is headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, with operations in more than 30 countries including production units in Finland, Sweden, Germany, the UK, the United States, and Mexico. “Our local mill in Calvert (about 40 miles north of the city of Mobile) is the most technically-advanced stainless steel mill in the United States and is focused on service center partnerships along with enduse markets including the appliance, consumer goods, and automotive industries,” Tamara shares. “Our facility operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week and employs over 900 people in our region, most of whom live in Mobile and Baldwin County.” With nearly 10,000 team members worldwide, OTK produces millions of tons of stainless steel annually — 2.1M last year alone. “Stainless steel is a most amazing product,” Tamara emphasizes. “Our main raw material is scrap metal, so we buy scrap and then melt it. We add additional metal to end up with the mix we need, but up to 90 percent of what we produce is produced with scrap. Every single bit of what we produce can be melted again and reused!” A global sustainability leader, OTK also boasts the industry’s lowest carbon footprint. Now touring the complex on a golf cart in our safety gear to capture the perfect pictures, it’s clear to see Tamara’s passion for stainless steel as

I find trust and empowerment really important, as well as giving credit where credit is due. What I’m striving to do is to be open to other opinions, appreciate differences around the table, and to discuss pain points, however tough they may be. perfect pictures, it’s clear to see Tamara’s passion for stainless steel as she points to a heaping pile of scraps. As she explains, we find where our worlds collide as we all love our stainless-steel appliances. To look at the heap before us with the knowledge it will be recycled and converted into the outer layer of a refrigerator blew our minds. From there, she pointed out that the blue and green buildings are for cool temperature work and the red are for heat-related work. So smart! Naturally, running a business situated across continents has its challenges, but Tamara does her best to do it all with grace. “I think everyone recognizes the importance of good communication,” she shares. “The tricky part is figuring out how to get this right. I find trust and empowerment really important, as well as giving credit where credit is due. What I’m striving to do is to be open to other opinions, appreciate differences around the table, and to discuss pain points, however tough they may be. I like to connect with others and try to speak to people as much as I can manage. Listening to ideas for improvement is, for me, time well-spent!” With inclusion and diversity at the forefront of Tamara’s mind, she shares, “This year we implemented a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiative in Calvert and Mexico. The goal of the initiative is to ensure that our team actively reflects the diversity in the communities we serve and that we provide a work environment that promotes equality and inclusion.” In doing so, OTK aims to attract and retain the best talent possible. “This is a really important issue for me personally,” Tamara divulges. “I have the vision that we have people of all backgrounds, origins, religions, genders, colors, sexual orientations, and heritages at the table, that all feel welcome, and that as a company we thrive because we have such diverse teams and an open and welcoming culture. I see this as an opportunity for us to ensure all team members are equally heard and have equal chances.” On a local level, OTK holds membership in area organizations such as the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce and the Business Council of Alabama. “Through these memberships we’re able to have a seat at the table around local discussions about diversity and inclusion in the workplace and sustainability to ensure we’re doing what we can to support

protecting our environment,” Tamara shares. “These topics are important to us, and we’re proud to be a part of the conversations in our area.” Steadily increasing their visibility and commitment to supporting the greater Mobile community, Tamara says OTK also gives back by supporting the next generation of manufacturing workers through scholarship endowments at local two- and four-year colleges and universities and participating in internship and apprenticeship programs that provide valuable hands-on training. “We’re also excited to be a part of a new program, GLAM (Girls Learning About Manufacturing), where our female team members from various departments will serve as mentors to high school and junior college-aged girls interested in what we do,” Tamara adds. Led by Manufacture Alabama, the program will support students who attend Bishop State Community College. “It’s important for OTK team members to show Mobile what we do, who we are, and the wonderful opportunity that’s only 40 miles north.” Major supporters of nonprofit organizations and neighbors in need, OTK’s Calvert team has also participated in various events supporting USA Health, the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, United Way of Southwest Alabama, SAWDC, and the FOCUS Women’s Conference locally. “We also host donation drives for displaced storm victims and raise funds for many organizations that serve our community,” she adds. “Giving back to our community is important, and we strive to do our part every year.” Perpetually knee-deep in international business relations, Tamara walks a tight rope balancing work with family life, especially when that means jumping time zones! “This can be tough to juggle, but I’m lucky to have a husband who is very supportive and never had an issue with long hours on the job or heavy traveling schedules,” Tamara says of her husband of 22 years, Dirk Weinert. “I take my downtime whenever I can, and as I find my work very enjoyable, I find the balance not too difficult to achieve. I have friends that balance between work, kids, and other activities, and I so admire what they manage. This is a huge task to accomplish and so many parents do that every day.” A lover of all things Gulf Coast, Tamara shares she is overwhelmingly thankful to live in such a welcoming, beautiful area. “We play golf and bought some kayaks and very much enjoy being out on the water in the early mornings,” she says. “There are so many wonderful places to eat — there aren’t many bad restaurants around here! We go out way too much, and I love the seafood in the area.” The couple also enjoys walking through Downtown Fairhope and popping in the various shops. “My husband volunteers at the Hope Center in Fairhope, so I am a bit partial to this place,” Tamara explains, adding, “There are just so many great initiatives to be involved in and connect to here.” Well-versed in avoiding “career burnout,” Tamara says her greatest advice is to avoid the notion that you have to be perfect. “No one is,” she states. “Speak out when it becomes too much and ask for support. Ensure your boss understands any conflicts you have with managing time and ask for the flexibility to work around these.” As for overall success? “I think a large factor for success on the job is to be brave and take opportunities when they arise,” she says. “We (women) can sometimes be a bit hesitant when larger career steps are possible or when asked to step outside our comfort zones. Women can do whatever they set their minds on. We just need to believe in ourselves.” Hating to say goodbye, all we can say is thank you, we’ll never look at our appliances the same way, and we believe in Tamara!

ONE ICONIC LADY There’s more to Sharon Stevens than meets the eye. While her work ethic and love for family are clearly evident, let us tell you there are layers to this funny, smart, and unpretentious business owner. Here, she reveals how her earlier years helped forge the success and happiness she has today. By Amber Wielkens Photos Stevye Photography, StevyePhotography.com Makeup Chasen Lipscomb, 251.605.8403

f it seems she planned her life’s trajectory in advance, Sharon Stevens will be the first to chuckle at the notion. While she cherishes both her family and being the owner of iKON Automotive in Robertsdale, she never envisioned this for herself. “I began my career as a nurse in a trauma center, one of the most stressful jobs ever. I also have a background in clinical psychiatry,” she says, noting that her roots in the car business were planted when she married Chuck in 2011. “I was his personal assistant and began learning the car business, finding I really enjoyed it. Chuck is selfless and taught me everything. He’s my biggest fan and I’m his!” In 2015, Chuck had to go on dialysis while waiting for a kidney donor. A year later, Sharon tells us, “He was blessed to receive a live donor kidney from Heather Hadley, who worked in our accounting office. She walked into our office and announced she was going to give Chuck a kidney.”

Top, $298, Jeans, $198; CK Collection, 251.990.9001.

Heather was 24 years old at the time. She told the couple she’d prayed about it and she knew she was going to be a match, and she was a match. Sharon is still overcome with gratitude for Heather’s altruism. “She also had to stop smoking and lose 60 pounds in order to donate one of her kidneys to Chuck in November of 2016.” At this point, Sharon’s nursing career and five years working alongside Chuck converged. “I had my work cut out for me taking care of my two patients and monitoring all four dealerships,” she acknowledges. Skills she honed as a trauma nurse also played a part in working through the pandemic, but Sharon is quick to share the credit. “It really helped with employees who contracted Covid-19, and I hope my nursing background kept our stores from being hit as hard with it,” she states. “Because of Chuck’s anti-rejection medications, we had to work from home for over a year. Our employees and human resources department were incredible throughout the pandemic.” As for her own dealership? “Once I started being more involved in fixed operations, the sales process, and day-to-day operations at work with Chuck, I handled most personnel issues and managerial hiring.” Sharon laughs as she recalls, ”Then I said the words no dealer wants to hear from their wife: ‘I want to open my own dealership!’ I called Stacey Penrod and told her

46 ACCESS Magazine / December 2021

my vision of a dealership run mostly by women, and in 2019, I opened iKON Automotive.” General Manager Stacey Penrod is a true inspiration for Sharon. “Stacey is one of the most

incredible, hardworking women I’ve ever met. She’s also one of the most successful women in the car business. She’s become one of my best

friends; I can tell her anything and everything. I’m beyond blessed to have her by my side,” Sharon says. But she’s not finished, adding, ”She’s also the best mom ever! Her two sons, Will, 24, and Justin, 22, are autistic. Justin comes to work with her every day, and she’s only taken Sundays off since we opened.” Here’s where Sharon’s own heart of gold shines a little brighter, as she tells us about the accommodations she’s put in place for Stacey’s son. “Justin has a man cave above iKON, and he comes down to make sure everyone is working. After ‘cracking the whip’ on the employees, he returns to ‘Dora the Explorer.’ He tells everyone that he works at iKON, wears an iKON uniform, and he and I have matching iKON backpacks,” she beams. Beyond her well-documented care for her employees, Sharon firmly believes the car business needs more women and diversity, saying, “I feel I’ve had the most success when surrounded by different people giving me different perspectives. Each person brings new knowledge from their own experiences. I love hearing new views, opinions, and outlooks, and learning from different people — you can’t get that by surrounding yourself with people who all come from the same circle.” Hear, hear! Sharon’s views on women and diversity in the workplace (and life in general) stem from what she considers one of her most precious blessings

— her own upbringing. “At first glance, you can’t tell that I’m of mixed race,” she shares. “My mother was German and my father is African American. Nothing is black or white to me. Nothing! I wouldn’t change the crazy way I grew up.” Interestingly, her father was the first black warden in the state of Alabama. “I spent much of my childhood with him inside the Mobile County Jail,” Sharon recalls. “He was a very popular warden; he changed the food and the way prisoners were treated. My mother, who passed away years ago, was Senior Engineer at QMS in Mobile. Because my father was in politics, we spent each and every Sunday at a different church, from Presbyterian to Catholic and Pentecostal to Southern Baptist.” Exposure to differing races, religious affiliations, and socioeconomic groups as a child formed the empathetic and perceptive woman Sharon is today. Lastly, asked her favorite things about life and work, Sharon is wholehearted on both subjects. “The best part of my life is getting to work and live with the most incredible husband in the entire world!” And her career? “Everyone at Chuck Stevens Automotive; I owe big thanks to all the outstanding employees who patiently taught me the car business, from Chuck to accounting, the management team, our crazy-good sales team, and the service and detail staff,” she says. “The education I received from all of them has informed our goal at iKON Automotive — we strive for 100 percent customer satisfaction.” She grins, “Well, we have had a complaint once. A gentleman called the city of Robertsdale to say our sign was too bright at night.” We think it might have been reflecting her sunny disposition.

MEET THE ENVY OF DIGITAL MARKETING Charming, witty, and extroverted, Envy Media Group owner Heather Harp is clearly someone you’d love to join your friend group, but when it comes to digital marketing, she’s all business and really knows her stuff. Too busy to learn how a comprehensive marketing plan can help you? We spoke with this powerhouse woman to learn what Envy offers and also the satisfaction she feels watching her clients’ businesses take off. he first thing you notice is the laughter. At her photoshoot, Heather Harp and the ACCESS glam squad are getting along famously. The second thing? Her empathy for others, which translates into success for her clientele. “In a noisy world, people just want to be heard,” Heather tells us. “Really listening to our clients and then serving them is our first priority. We only offer solutions that will assist in achieving their goals. I think some of that comes naturally from being a mom, but it truly is what sets us apart.” With the focus at Envy Media Group squarely on each client’s individual needs, you’ll never find them coaxing their clients into any technology or marketing they don’t need. We like her already. With a long career in sales and marketing, Heather and her team can handle it all for you. Heather explains, “Envy Media Group offers a full stack of marketing services. With experience working in digital, broadcast, cable, print, outdoor, and creative production, our team is well-equipped with the tools and digital knowledge to put the right media strategy together for your business.” A go-getter in her field for over 20 years, Heather’s entrepreneurial spirit has culminated in her being a solutions provider with a passion for helping her clients save money and run their businesses in a more

streamlined and efficient manner. More? Envy Media possesses the technology (and the skills) to scale up a brick-and-mortar store into a national enterprise. Envy Media Group’s formation was based on Heather’s eye for efficiency. Throughout her storied career (from her role as regional sales manager for nine radio stations to serving as an international buyer and negotiator and more), she noticed a common thread. “Wherever I was in the world, there was one common denominator, no matter what size the company,” she recalls. “They all knew and were passionate about their businesses; they were just extremely busy running the dayto-day operations, which often meant a strategic marketing plan got put on the backburner.” Thus, Envy Media Group was formed. “Streamlining and efficient marketing processes grow businesses, ultimately resulting in more revenue,” she says. Years ago, business owners only had a few advertising options — print, radio, and television. “The addition of digital options means navigating the advertising and marketing waters can be completely overwhelming for even the savviest business owner,” Heather observes. It’s comforting to know Envy Media Group has the people, tools, and tech skills to help businesses stay ahead of the curve. Heather gets it, and boils her job down to “helping our clients trim the fat by getting rid of excess ad spending,” she says, adding, “We become the growth extension of the business we’re working with.” In this day and age, Heather asserts that every business, big or small, should have a strong online presence. Traditional advertising like print will drive consumers to digital platforms to find more

information or to take action, she explains. It’s important to look at how traditional and digital campaigns work in tandem to guide the consumer down the path to purchase. Now we get it. If you’re not seen online, you’re losing money. In what was formerly a male-dominated industry, Envy Media stands out. When Heather began her

career in radio, almost all executive-level positions were held by men. Now, female representation in the both the marketing industry and media and communications is at 60 percent. In the technology sector, however, women only account for 29 percent. Interested in a career in digital marketing or tech? Find another woman to mentor you. An education is valuable, but learning from another successful woman with real-world experience is key. Asked about obstacles she’s had to overcome, Heather emphatically states the difficulty of achieving a work-life balance, while also detailing the benefits. “As a single mother of a very active 13-year-old daughter, the days can be long but also rewarding. Yes, I’ve occasionally had to pull out my computer between games at tournaments, and throughout the years, my daughter’s been by my side in countless client meetings, video shoots, at events — you name it. She’s been exposed to all types of businesses and industries and I love it. I’m so grateful to my clients over the past few years who’ve welcomed her with open arms,” she shares. “Inadvertently, my daughter’s had firsthand experience watching a hardworking businesswoman who takes pride in getting things done and never leaving anything unfinished; witnessed the value, pride, and payoff of a good work ethic and what it means; and learned that the sky is the limit. I hope one day she’ll be able to look back and know she can accomplish anything she puts her mind to.” Let’s hear it for the girls! Approaching clientele with the heart of a teacher is central to her business model. “I’m a problem solver, as many women are; we’ll work tirelessly to ensure everything’s fixed and running properly for our clients,” Heather says. At Envy, the team prides themselves on providing solutions for their clients, with Heather joking, “That’s what women are doing every day, right? Solving problems in our children’s worlds, our spouse or significant other’s worlds? As women, we have a lot to juggle; we have to find ways in life and work to be efficient, effective, and work smarter (not harder)

so we can get it all done.” Further, she feels this gives their clients a huge advantage when working with Envy, as they carry this philosophy into their work lives. “No two clients or businesses are the same,” she acknowledges. “We take a very dialedin, strategic, and customized approach in creating the most efficient and effective campaign that will best fit each individual client. This results in time and money saved by the client. If we run into a roadblock or issue, we find creative workarounds — we’re constantly coming up with new ideas and processes to make their jobs and lives easier.” Aside from being in business with a trusted and highly accomplished professional like Heather and her team at Envy Media, in the end, it’s about the bottom line. Heather puts forth an example where her team created a customized, datadriven inventory ad campaign, walking their client through their end of the process and how the team at Envy would track everything on the back end, as it’s important to her that clients understand what the data means and how to track it. Digital advertising can seem overwhelming, but it’s really all about the results. While helping grow sales, Heather is also growing her clients’ understanding. “Our clients don’t need to know everything about digital advertising. That’s why they have us,” says Heather. And with that, we tip our caps to Heather Harp and her talented team.

FIRST LADIES OF AESTHETICS

Mobile’s newest med spa, Synergy MedAesthetics, has people talking for all the right reasons. Expanding from the west coast and bringing with them the absolute latest in everything aesthetics, it’s the highly trained, compassionate, women-led staff that have us glowing. Truly, who better to sympathize with and advise us on what can be highly personal than a group of females who love helping others? A serious veteran with an even more serious knack for beauty, we chatted with Director of Aesthetic Services Amber Cherry, LME, MA, and her team about the Synergy difference. mber Cherry (is there a better name?) and her team are a revelation of the good kind. Looking like they stepped out of the pages of Vogue, these chic women in silk blouses, flared trousers, and higher-than-high heels at their perfectly glamorous med spa might seem intimidating at first, but we promise you’ll immediately be made to feel comfortable by their friendly, down-toearth personalities and their passion for the most up-todate methods to make you look and feel your absolute best. One more thing? They listen to you.

After all, who can’t relate to leaving a med spa in a haze wondering why you agreed to the more expensive version of “Would you like fries with that?” The upsell isn’t a factor at Synergy MedAesthetics. Instead, they’re dedicated to creating a community of women through active listening and customized plans to achieve each client’s goals, ensuring all are thrilled with the results and want to return. According to Amber, “We proudly serve those seeking to enhance their natural beauty without going outside their budget or comfort zone. Our practitioners are experts in everything from Botox and dermal fillers to laser hair removal and skin-health services. We only provide the most up-to-date treatments, specializing in non-surgical cosmetic and body sculpting procedures. Moreover, no one at Synergy is paid on commission for services; when we recommend a service, it’s because we believe it will help you achieve your aesthetic goals.” Amber is quick to credit their talented Medical Director, too. “We offer expert injections administered by the amazing facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Blake Raggio,” she says, “In addition, Synergy is the only place in Mobile with the DiamondGlow facial, a medical grade, machine-based facial which uses a diamond abrasion tip to slough off dead skin cells, suction to pull out impurities, and their special, customized serums are infused into the skin, all in one treatment.” We’ve possibly made an appointment for that one already. Also on offer are CoolSculpting, skin tightening (for face, neck and body) with Exilis Ultra 360, laser treatments to help with hair reduction and erasing unwanted pigment anywhere on the body, Laser Genesis, Microneedling with the SkinPen, VI Peels, manual facials, and dermaplaning. It’s possible to get your “New Year, New You” started early, we’re just saying. Clearly our community won the med spa jackpot when Synergy MedAesthetics opened in November. Founded by Nicole Chiaramonte, who owns several practices on the west coast (from Seattle to Beverly Hills), Amber happily worked for her in Washington for years. She shares, “When I chose to move to Alabama so my children could be closer to their father and we could co-parent, she asked me if I wanted to direct my own med spa. I replied ‘Of course!’” And we’re so glad she did. Before earning her license as a Master Aesthetician, Amber served in the U.S. Army for eight years. “I was a motor transport operator,” she says. “Most people get a good laugh when they learn I was a truck driver in my previous career! I left the military to raise my two beautiful children, a 14-year-old daughter and an 11-year-old son.” Why this field? “I ultimately chose aesthetics because I get great pleasure in giving people confidence in themselves,” says the kindhearted Amber. Like Guest Relations Manager Michaela Ferguson and Nurse Practitioner Kendall Lavoie, Amber lives and breathes

Synergy proudly offers ZO Skin Health, a medical-grade skincare line.

The luxurious and welcoming treatment rooms promise a relaxing renewal.

Synergy’s motto, which is “Like you, we are unique,” and that is where the magic lies. She claims, “Synergy embraces the individuality of each patient we touch; each treatment is tailored to their needs to enhance that person’s unique beauty. I was absolutely drawn to them as a company — their core values, their belief in community over competition, and the empowerment of being part of an all-female team.” Calling her leadership style collaborative, she explains, “I think the group’s input, ideas, and feelings are an important part of having a cohesive team. I believe my leadership style is effective because everyone feels heard and likes being included in the big picture. Over the years, I’ve learned that leadership in the aesthetics industry is very different from the military,” she smiles. “Now, I believe in leading by example. There isn’t anything I would have the crew do that I wouldn’t do. I never stop learning in this position, so in addition to leading, I’m also skilled at everything we do here.” As Director of Aesthetics, Amber keeps busy “ensuring communication is fluid between our location and headquarters in Washington state. I oversee day-to-day operations and compliance,” she says, but she insists the staff is the heart and soul of Synergy. “We have the most amazing staff! We want every single person who walks through our doors to feel seen and heard, so we hire genuine people to give our patrons genuine warmth and care.” In describing them, it’s apparent Amber is more than proud of her team. “Michaela Ferguson is our beautiful, intelligent, and charming Guest Relations Manager. She’s been my right-hand from the moment we left Washington, and I couldn’t be successful without her.” Michaela mirrors her feelings, stating, “Working with Amber has been a true joy. She’s one of the smartest people I’ve met in this field, and she’s genuine with everyone she meets. Many patients were heartbroken when she left Washington. I’m so thankful for the hospitality we’ve received in our new community, too. I can’t 54 ACCESS Magazine / December 2021

wait to see the impact Amber and Kendall make on their patients because the work they do is truly incredible!” That, ladies and gentlemen, is a testimonial. Amber has more high marks to give, though. “Kendall Lavoie is our smart and sweet-as-honey Nurse Practitioner. A Mobile native, she’s the embodiment of Southern hospitality, her kindness and smile are infectious, and she’s at the top of her game regarding the treatments we offer,” Amber says. Kendall is equally enthusiastic, saying, “I’m ecstatic to join a group of women devoted to helping others feel their very best about themselves. The passion, expertise, and knowledge that surround Synergy and our staff are truly incomparable.”

Ambience matters, too, and Amber wants everyone who walks into Synergy to feel comfortable, welcomed, and special. “Soft music plays throughout, and we love to chat at the front desk without the pressure of forced sales pitches. I want our clients to feel like they can take a deep breath when they walk in, knowing they’re going to get an effective and relaxing treatment,” she says. In the end, it all comes down to how we feel after receiving a treatment, and not just the results we see in the mirror. It’s about wanting to return to the people who made us feel the way Synergy does. Amber says, “I’m generally a self-deprecating person and tend to keep things close to my heart, but when my patients tell me something I did changed their life, that they feel beautiful, or they walk into my office no longer hiding behind hoodies and hair, it fulfills my soul.” With this quote, we’d usually wrap it up here, but Michaela has something just as worthy to add, musing, “Synergy is a unique and personal company. My favorite part is the people we meet. Watching the confidence of our patients grow with every treatment is tremendously rewarding, as aesthetics goes far beyond outward appearances. Rather, it allows patients to feel comfortable in their own unique beauty and sense of self.” Well put and welcome, Team Synergy!

MAD ABOUT

MICHELLE

Michelle Bigler knows that everyone wants to live the Fairhope dream, but does she know that many of us, (okay, mostly the Access team) want a life like hers, too? With a family as loving, good looking, funny, and diverse as the famed Kardashian clan, we’re all curious about how she juggles it all while looking like a dead ringer for actress Kate Hudson. Perpetually on the go and a successful associate broker at Wise Living Real Estate in Fairhope, one of two exclusive listing agents at the upscale community The Verandas, wife to Bruce, and mom to four, it hasn’t always been easy. Nevertheless, with her “can’t stop, won’t stop” energy, she’s a leader in her own right. ust like us, Michelle Bigler wasn’t handed a flowchart to map out the decisions that would shape her life, but we might want to check she’s not hiding the secret to success and happiness in her sock drawer, because this woman appears to both have it all and make the best of it when she doesn’t. A leader in the real estate community and an advocate for differently abled children and adults, she’s the first to admit it’s not always easy, despite appearances to the contrary.

Appearing fearless in both the past and present, Michelle credits her two oldest children, Daniel and Weslyn, with giving her the courage to open her own real estate company years ago, claiming, “It never crossed my mind to be scared. It just seemed like the next step. I was divorced and a single mother to my two oldest children for 10 years. I had to do it all on my own, so I didn’t have a choice, which I guess made me somewhat fearless.” Listing her children as her first priority, it was paramount that her career was flexible so she could be there for all the moments — the sick ones, the fun ones, and the life-changing ones. “I made it my mission and also made a bet with my broker at the time, Trae Corte, that I would kill it my first year, and I set out to win. I won that bet, but the biggest win was discovering I loved this business.” Not at all downplaying the amount of sheer hard work she put in, Michelle nonetheless gives thanks for her earlier business ventures, which she firmly believes are key to her success today. Michelle owned children’s clothing stores and an advertising agency. “In my years of owning a retail store, I learned the importance of customer service, and owning an advertising agency led to my passion for marketing, which I believe is a cornerstone of selling real estate,” she says. Her career philosophy is based on building lasting relationships centered on her reliability and willingness to go the extra mile. “Through friendships and introductions made in my previous professions, I had a wonderful customer base. I was also fortunate enough to gain the trust of

several builders and my real estate career was doing very well,” she tells us. “When I’d held my real estate license for two years, I immediately got my broker’s license and opened my own company. I was blessed to grow a thriving business.” Michelle’s credo? No matter what business you’re in, if you deliver more than the client is expecting, treat them likefamily, and beentirely honest and transparent, you can’t help but win. Michelle and her partner have sold almost all the properties in The Verandas and are currently listing and taking reservations for the adjacent three-acre lots for custom homes called The Estates at The Verandas. With the sales to prove it, she can’t recommend the Bay Area enough, joking that she’s the area’s biggest cheerleader. “I believe with all my heart that Fairhope and the Eastern Shore are the most wonderful places to live and raise a family,” she asserts. “I love showing my clients from out of the area how special it is,” she adds, noting it’s not just the place itself, but the people, as well. “It’s apparent when you pull into a neighborhood with a new client

and everyone waves hello. Clients always ask if I know the people, and most times I don’t. I tell them it’s just what we do here. It’s Southern hospitality and I don’t know a place that does it better than we do.” A cheerleader, indeed. Considered a leader in the Fairhope community, we ask who most inspired Michelle to become the woman she is today, and her answer is definitive. “Willanese Polewoda was a coworker and my best friend — we were the most unlikely pair. I was in my early 20s and she was in her 70s, but we were kindred spirits. Kind and unapologetically authentic, she inspired me to be brave and bold in both life and with accessories,” she beams. “Not a day goes by that I don’t miss her and smile, especially when getting dressed. Her sage advice? ‘If you think you have enough bracelets on, add one more.’ I miss her dearly, but I’m grateful to have known her.” Willanese’s example is exactly how we want to be remembered — kind-hearted, authentic, and well-accessorized. Married to Bruce Bigler, Michelle is mom to four children, three of whom are grown. “My kids, all four, have taught me more than anyone about acceptance, kindness, and absolutely unconditional love, even when life doesn’t look like what we thought it would,” she exclaims. Taking a proud mama moment, she tells us about her older kids, “My son Daniel lives in New York City. He moved there for a modeling career, which evolved into a career in the art world with The Morrison Hotel Gallery. He’s also one of the owners and members of The Muses, a sought-after DJ duo. Daniel graduated from The New School in New York with an art history degree. My daughter, Weslyn, graduated from Samford University with a broadcast journalism and communications degree and lives and works in Nashville. We’re in the exciting process of planning her wedding in April,

2022. My bonus son, Donnie, earned his MBA from Samford and just bought his first home in Birmingham.” Acknowledging she might sound a bit clichéd, Michelle’s favorite role is being a mom and she enjoys every minute with her children, declaring it “the absolute best” when your children become your best friends. This is one accomplished and (even better) close family! Obviously, she and Bruce have lots to celebrate, and Michelle considers their youngest son, Maxwell, a blessing of the highest order. “I didn’t know and wasn’t prepared for how he would change my life. After a picture-perfect pregnancy, we had a difficult labor and delivery and Maxwell, now 8 years old, experienced a brain injury. At the time, we didn’t know there would be future difficulties. We were home within 10 days and I thought everything was going to be okay,” she begins. “Soon, we began noticing major sleep issues and developmental delays, which led to countless MRIs, but we were repeatedly told he was simply delayed and would catch up, so we sought another opinion.” In her heart, Michelle knew there was more to it. “We searched for the top pediatric doctors and found one in Boston. They had an advanced MRI system and were able to pinpoint Maxwell’s exact diagnosis — an injury to the white matter of his brain (the fine and gross motor area), so he had difficulty learning to walk and still only speaks a handful of words. Looking back on it, hearing the truth left me terrified. I was paralyzed about what the future would hold and honestly, sometimes I still am,” she admits,

opening up about her feelings. “He’s been through thousands of hours of therapy — speech, occupational, physical, primitive reflex retraining, horse therapy, swim, and more. He is so amazing! He’s happy and bright and typical on many levels; however, he has struggles and because of that, I struggle as well, because no one wants their child to face this kind of adversity. He loves to swim, thinks Disney is heaven, and has taught me more than he’ll ever know!” Michelle credits Maxwell’s most recent progress to “his most incredible teacher, Gina, who’s an absolute angel and a dear friend to us all. Since she started helping us, we’re seeing vast improvements in Maxwell’s cognitive skills and literally everything else, too!” Michelle’s honesty can be painful for her and even for us, but she’s never been one to shy away from speaking her truth. “I don’t pretend, or want to send a message that things aren’t difficult at times. Like other parents, Bruce and I have had our share of the many sleepless nights, the learning obstacles, difficulty finding trustworthy sitters, and more, but the absolute love and affection Maxwell gives us makes us smile and push through the hard days,” she relates. “When I feel like I can’t breathe, thinking about the future and what that might look like, I give myself a stern reminder to take things one day at a time. None of us know what our future holds, and our situation is no different. I also remind the naysayers that we all have disabilities, but some of ours can’t be seen from the outside.” Well said, Michelle! Her dream? “I want to open a dialogue on the subject of disabilities — cultivating space for acceptance, compassion, and learning to encourage others by starting a nonprofit center for children and adults with neurological issues to socialize, be with friends, and just enjoy life in a safe, judgment-free environment.” Citing her loved ones, Michelle calls “the most supportive husband, family, and friends” the reason she considers herself the luckiest person in the world. She is unstoppable and modest, as well, telling us, “I’m a work in progress every day. Some days are great and some are a challenge, but each day is a new one and an opportunity to start over.” Our compliments to this bright shining star we’re privileged to call our own. Willanese would be proud.

ver heard of a wealth specialist? The title alone might solicit paralyzing fear or even a condescending chuckle. But, the fact is, this is exactly how you acquire wealth. And there’s no minimum dollar amount required to work with Justin Law. Not always the case, we we’re thrilled to sit down with him because, as he says, “You’re never too young or too old to start preparing for tomorrow and the future.” Aware that many young people put off wealth management and planning (and many in the over 50 category figure it’s too late to bother), Justin assures that deciding to engage will be the best decision you make in your entire life. We figure the word “wealth” in wealth manager could be part of the problem. “There are so many preconceived notions about working with someone in my industry,” says Justin, a Managing Associate with Strategic Wealth Specialists. “Most people feel you must have large sums of money, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. I’m a firm believer that every person possesses a unique skill set and array of gifts that can be translated into financial resources/income. It’s my role to guide clients to be the best stewards possible of those financial resources, whatever the amount may be.” With so many feeling they’re not where the “should” be financially, shame plays a role, too. “I teach my clients not to focus on decisions made before we begin working together, but rather the immense opportunity that lies ahead, especially by having an accountability partner to help them make the most optimal decisions from that point forward,” Justin shares, adding that many young professionals feel they should wait until they earn a higher salary to work with someone like him. “That’s another falsehood,” he insists, adding that it’s not about how much you make, but how much you keep. “Young professionals face many issues such as how to efficiently pay off student loans, when to purchase a home, figuring out the most efficient mortgage, finding the most optimal way to take advantage of their 401(k), and more. The earlier someone works with a financial professional, the better the options that lie ahead will be!” Speaking from experience, Justin admits working in the financial services industry wasn’t always on his radar. “My path to the Bay area and my current career is a winding one,” he laughs, sharing he spent 12 years working in a third-generation family business that manufactured and distributed outdoor furniture products throughout the Southeast. But through several major life events in 2017, Justin found himself just trying to keep his head above water. “The sudden and unexpected passing of my father (the business owner) preceded by a lack of addressing some of the key planning areas I guide my clients through today left me in my mid 30s searching for a new chapter in life,” he recalls. “I knew immediately that I wanted to pursue a career in financial services because I had experienced firsthand the problems that a lack of optimal decision making in that area can lead to.” A Troy boy at heart, Justin made the move to the Bay area three years ago, settling in Spanish Fort. “I saw the potential for the area to be the hub for what I believed was the most transformational region of our great nation: the Gulf Coast,” he says. “In the three years since relocating, I’ve been blown away by the opportunities presented to me. The people are so warm and accommodating to ‘outsiders’ that are honest, hard-working, and have good intentions. Relocating here has by far been one of the most defining decisions of my life!” Another advantage? Justin says the biggest blessing has been meeting the absolute love of his life, girlfriend Nicole Shipman. “We were introduced by mutual friends a year ago and she’s inspired a newfound passion for this life we’re all blessed with,” he dotes. “She pushes me to be the

best version of myself and has the courage to challenge me when I fall short. Between a career that allows me to leave a profound impact and legacy with my clients, the world-class amenities living on the Gulf Coast offers, and doing life with Nicole, the Mobile Bay area has given me more than I could ever return!” Helping small business owners develop a path for succession planning and transferring their businesses to the next generation fuels another part of Justin’s flame. “My experiences in a family business have given me a passion for working with small business owners in the business planning space,” he shares. “I assist them by obtaining informal business valuations, help them strategically protect and grow that value, design compensation packages for valuable employees, build efficient cash flow management systems, craft efficient succession/exit strategies, and coordinate their business balance sheet with their personal balance sheets.” Basically, he’s a living, breathing calculator with a personal desire to see you, your business, and your future thrive. Justin, where have you been all our lives? But you don’t have to own a business or be insanely wealthy to pop in for a chat. In fact, Justin can help with a slew of financial services including insurance, disability income insurance, and annuities, to dental, vision, 401(k) plans, and more. “There is no minimum amount of assets to be able to work with me,” Justin insists. “Working with me requires just two qualifications: First, one needs to have some level of existing income or assets, and second, they must have a desire to make the most optimal decisions regarding their income and/or assets and be willing to take action when a feasible path to improvement is presented. If I show someone a feasible path to improve their balance sheet and they are unwilling to take action, then we’ve both wasted time.” But where do you find the time? “Many times, when I approach someone, they share they’d love to meet with me, but they’re just too ‘busy,’” Justin shares. “In today’s world, everyone’s ‘busy’ and there’s never enough hours in the day, but I counter that response with this question: ‘If there was one hour of your week that would make every other hour you work exponentially more valuable and productive, would that be a meeting worth taking?’ What meeting could be more valuable that learning how to be the best steward of all of your financial resources?” We admit, we’re not always the best stewards of our own money. Often victims to the random “impulse buy” or “treat yo’self” mentality, it’s easy to overlook how fast those little indulgences can snowball into something big. “In my practice (and our entire organization), we teach clients how to evaluate financial decisions based on the ‘Lost Opportunity Cost’ concept,” Justin explains. “This means that every time you make a decision to allocate $1 to any purpose — be it to pay off debt, contribute to your 401(k), or buy that $8 Starbuck’s latte — you not only allocate that dollar to that purpose; you also forego everything else that dollar could have done for your balance sheet for the rest of your life!” And he’s got examples. “Say you purchase an $8 latte a mere three times

per week (assuming 48 working weeks in a year). That amounts to $1,152 per year!” he warns. “But, instead of purchasing that latte three times per week, you were to, say, place that $8 in an account earning a 5 percent rate of return, in five years, you would have $6,684. In 10 years, you would have $15,214. In 30 years, you would have $80,364!” Wait, what? That must-have latte is not costing you $8… it’s costing your future self $80,364! Now that’s an expensive latte! Aaaaaand we’re putting the coffee down. “The biggest mistake I see is people leaving themselves exposed to unknown risks. Having an accountability partner to point out potential problems you don’t see coming with a broad perspective to let you know you’re not alone is key,” Justin shares. “The No. 1 pitfall of not working with a financial advisor is human behavior. If left to make choices at our own whims, the rate of success is substantially reduced. It’s my job to bring unbiased guidance and ‘help my clients get out of their own way.’” Surprisingly, Justin shares women are often better savers than men. “From my experience, the average woman finds comfort in the security a well-thought out strategic plan provides,” he shares. “They want to know they’re on an optimal path and there’s a recourse for all the ‘what-ifs’ along the way. From the husband’s perspective, it goes back to the age-old adage, ‘Happy wife, happy life.’ I find a strategic plan leads to a much more evenly-yoked relationship.” But what measures should we be taking right now to ensure we’re not left scrambling in the event of, say, a divorce, or worse — the death of a spouse? “STAY ENGAGED, STAY ENGAGED, STAY ENGAGED,” Justin insists. “The stakes for not doing so are too high. Ask your spouse tough questions like, ‘Do we have our estate planning and legal documents in order?’ ‘Are we saving enough money?’ ‘What is our plan for managing our debt?’ You owe it to your spouse and yourself to be an active participant in your finances!” Speaking of debt, it’s easy to assume we’ve all accumulated a little. But is there an optimal way to attack shortterm debt like credit cards and auto and student loans? Justin details, “So often, I find clients aggressively paying down debt with no liquid assets on their balance sheet. This leads to what I call ‘the hamster wheel effect.’ You pay down some debt, then life presents a challenge, and you go back into more debt. This can be extremely demoralizing. Short-term debt should be addressed, but only in the proper order. This eliminates the need to ever go into further debt.” Who knew? And with inflation on the rise, now’s the time to hone our focus. “Inflation, or as I refer to it, ‘Cost of Living Increase,’ is real,” Justin warns. “It’s hitting all of us substantially. There’s no financial product that can eliminate inflation; however, there are decisions and strategies that can help position a balance sheet to be strategically hedged against inflation. As far as insecurities or financial concerns, there’s no better time to consult with a professional to ensure you’re considering all angles and making optimal decisions.” We get it. There’s much to be done, so let’s talk retirement. “For our grandparents, the idea of retirement meant working for one company their

entire life to receive a gold watch and the promise to pay them a substantial portion of their income the rest of their life in the form a pension,” Justin explains, adding that most people don’t realize that the 401(k) is a relatively new creation. “The 401(k) was created in 1978, whereby employees were transitioned into being responsible for their own retirements. Pensions are now a rare in the private sector and more common in the public/government sector. The first generation of employees that have solely used the 401(k) for their retirement are beginning to enter retirement and are finding that taking income out of these accounts is not as straightforward as expected.” Ever-learning, Justin prides himself on staying abreast of the constant changes within his industry and how they impact his clients. “Regulations, legislation, and tax laws change. In order to be successful, you must be a perpetual student of these changes and constantly seek ways to adapt your philosophies to these changing environments,” Justin shares. “There’s no way to be an ‘expert’ on everything, as you’re constantly presented with new situations and dynamics.” That said, Justin warns people should be wary of financial professionals who promise you the moon. “The biggest red flag in my mind is when someone ‘guarantees’ you a certain rate of return on your money,” Justin says. “I cannot predict the future and am fully aware that any type of market will fluctuate. Therefore, I don’t focus on ‘guaranteeing’ a certain rate of return. Instead, I focus on optimizing a client’s rate of retention or their savings rate.” We’re thankful to have you in our corner, Justin. Looks like we’ll be seeing you soon!

Curating the COASTAL LOOK Gone are the days of tennis whites in the afternoon and dinner attire in the evening. Today, the lines between fashion and athletic wear have been beautifully blurred into one category affectionately called “athleisure wear.” At last, an acknowledgement for comfort and fashion! Leading the pack locally, Fairhope’s 7 South owners Beth Lee and Jody Donald are leaning in to support their beloved community by stocking sustainable brands that give back and by playing a role in keeping downtown Fairhope a shopping mecca for all. s the world has moved toward a more casual, comfortable lifestyle, friends and business partners Jody Donald and Beth Lee were among the first to recognize the possibilities for a local shop catering to the new normal. “Everyone likes to dress up for special occasions, but daily, people want to be comfortable while looking put together,” Beth claims. “Our tag lines at 7 South are ‘From workout to lunch out’ and ‘From the boat to the bar.’ Our store encompasses those lines with the brands we offer.” And she’s so right. 7 South offers so much more than typical athletic wear. In their own unique way, they’ve mastered the art of curating the perfect pieces that come together as polished looks. Boasting fashionforward items like fur vests, sneakers that can be dressed up or down, jumpsuits and joggers that go day to night, and more — they all live up to the tag lines. Their origin story begins with a friendship, which we feel is a good place to start any journey. “Beth and I met at a Bayside parent night when she’d just moved here from Kentucky,” Jody recalls. “We had a tremendous amount in common with kids in the same grades, and our friendship grew from there. Our husbands became fast friends, too, and our families enjoy spending time together.” Adding in their combined

skillsets equaled a successful business. Jody grew up on the Mississippi Gulf Coast but has lived in Baldwin County for 23 years. Married to Chris Donald, a local dentist, they have four children together. Nowadays, with Madison and John attending Auburn University, Jack at The University of Alabama, and Claire a senior at Bayside Academy, she has more time to focus on her store and the community. Jody muses, “What’s not to love about living in Fairhope? We’re fortunate to live in such a lovely town surrounded by so much natural beauty. For me, it’s all about living on the water and everything that comes with it. It’s wonderful to live in a place where so many love to vacation and visit.” Born and raised in Frankfort, Kentucky, Beth had a successful event planning business for 20 years. Married to Chris Lee and with four children (Rives, 22, who lives in Dallas and works in educational software; Anna, 21, a senior at Ole Miss; Jackson, 20, a sophomore playing baseball at Southwestern Mississippi; and Riley, 17, a senior at Bayside Academy), the family moved to Fairhope nine years ago and immediately fell in love. Beth echoes Jody’s sentiments about their town, claiming, “One of the first Fairhope things Chris and I did was the Lighting of the Trees. The countdown to the lights, fake snow falling, carolers, Dogwood Trail Maids, flowers planted on every corner — we were really taken by the charm of the town and have loved it ever since.” With their friendship, love for their community, and the skills to make it all work, this duo decided to open 7 South. Jody confesses, “I had thoughts of opening a store in Fairhope but was reluctant to do it on my own. One night, Beth shared with me that she wanted to work closer to home, as she was still going to Kentucky to work events, so I brought up opening a store together and she was immediately interested. I was excited to partner with Beth

because of her successful event-planning business and I knew our partnership would allow us time to be moms and wives, since our families are our first priority.” Jody’s idea? “We both felt Fairhope needed a store that combined fitness, athleisure, and other good casual clothing. Beth and I wanted to open a store that offered the types of things we wore on an almost daily basis, and we did,” Jody says. “At that time, Fairhope didn’t have a casual menswear store and I felt we could fill that gap. Also, Chris, the kids, and I had developed the Old Point Clear Brand and wanted to merchandise it. We only had t-shirts and hats, but it’s since grown into other apparel items.” Beth is still amazed at how quickly their idea took off once they decided to pursue it. “We worked extremely hard to get a location and almost felt like giving up several times because every location we found would be taken by the next day,” she shares. “Around that time, I was driving through downtown Fairhope and saw a tiny black and orange ‘For Lease’ sign in a window. I called Jody and she met me there right away. We looked at the space we have at 7 South Section Street and signed the lease that very day. 7 South was off and running!” she smiles. If it’s variety you’re craving, both men and women are in luck. 7 South carries an extensive list of enviable lines too long to name here, but a few standouts are calling our name. For women, a chic new brand of bags, Think Roylin, has a 3-in-1 with straps that change out from chain to crossbody nylon, making it easy to go from day to night. Anything from Varley (the luxury workout and activewear line with fantastic prints and fabrics) looks great anywhere, too. Koral’s Lustrous leggings and one of their Netz tanks look great together and would make a great gift, Beth tells us. For men, Riomar loafers are the very

definition of versatile — think stylish leather and waterproof — and Onward Reserve’s Performance button-downs combine the comfort of fishing shirt material with traditional styling. Perfect for this climate, they’ll be on our shopping list as well. Along with running the store, both Jody and Beth consider it an honor to support various local charities and organizations. They regularly offer financial support and merchandise to local benefits and auctions, also donating items to local charities, but what sets them apart is their determination to find socially and environmentally responsible brands. ”For example, we have a sunglass brand called Diff that donates reading glasses to someone in need for every pair sold,” Jody says. “We also have a leather and jewelry line that employs women who’ve overcome extreme hardships and atrocities, both domestically and abroad,” Beth adds. “Their platform is to empower women through teaching them a skill that will help them find employment. We purposely buy brands that are made in the USA and/or give portions of their sales to ocean cleanup and use fabrics that help in this goal.” Finding as many of these purposedriven companies as possible is one of the main goals of their business model, and we love them for it. As mothers to four children each and having excelled in other careers, both women clearly have innate leadership skills, but keeping 7 South afloat during the pandemic shutdown was a different challenge, and one from which they didn’t shy away. Beth asserts, “We doubled down and developed our website, offering local delivery and private shopping. The site was always ‘in the works,’ but we’d never had the time. Thanks to all of that hard work and a great many loyal customers, we were able to come through such a hard time with a new website to add to our business. My

advice for handling obstacles is to keep moving forward.” Jody agrees and expands on this, adding, “I think our ability to survive brings the conversation back to why it’s great to live in Fairhope. We were extremely grateful for local support through such a difficult time. I realized that even if things stop, people still want to buy gifts for family members or something nice for themselves. Also, the fact that we have a very casual store helped during a time when the world was living in their athleisure and fitness clothing.” Online buying aside, 7 South is proud of their real-world store. ”Having a brick-and-mortar store is the only way you can truly be supportive in a community through creating jobs, generating revenue from local taxes and tourism dollars, and through supporting other local businesses,” Jody says. “When we say, ‘Shop Local,’ we really mean it!” Beth is quick to expand on those remarks, telling us, ”What makes downtown Fairhope great is that the businesses here complement one another for the most part and together make it an interesting place to live and visit. Through this we all benefit.”

VESTA’S VISION

Perfectly timed to the local housing market boom, Vesta Taylor’s long-time dream of opening a boutique in downtown Fairhope where she could share her custom designed and carefully curated collection of light fixtures, unique flooring, decadent drapes, and all the upscale accessories that make a home a show-stopper is now a reality. Here, we delve into her unique journey in defining the “Southern New Traditional” look complete with European influences and more. The result? A fresh twist beyond measure. sought-after interior designer hailing from Greenville, Vesta Taylor enjoyed a range of projects from new builds to decorating the Governor’s Mansion in Montgomery for the holidays for four years. She was even tapped to bring her Southern design skills to the set of hit dating show, “Sweet Home Alabama.” Brushes with fame aside and new to the area, Vesta is extremely proud of her Southern heritage and has found a thriving and in-demand nitch. “I love the South and I’m super excited about working in Fairhope. My husband, Wesley, and I found it and fell in love with it in 2002 and have been trying to move here ever since,” she shares. “As a designer, I bring a new and unique Southern feel that’s sophisticated yet casual. Influenced by both traditional and European styles, I’ve honed in on a more accessible and defined approach to the coastal lifestyle we all crave.” Walking into her shop conveniently located in the center of town, one is immediately transported to Vesta’s vision where all things Southern, traditional, European, feminine, and even modern somehow come together flawlessly. Between lush velvet drapes that puddle just right, sconces that scream, “Take me home now,” and more, we’re left wanting an instant home remodel. Upon further exploration, Vesta’s brilliant plan for ease and convenience reveals itself, too, as a majority of the light fixtures are ready to go out the door boasting plug-in options for immediate use, thus opening a sea of opportunities. Planning a dining al fresco soirée? Plug in your new chandelier under an old oak tree or pergola for a more-than-memorable meal. Light up a wedding venue and then return the fixture to your dining room. Plug in sconces on your outdoor entertaining space walls to add instant polish and avoid the installation commitment that results in cutting and wiring. The list goes on. Of course, all the fixtures can be wired once you’ve enjoyed the mobility. Convivences aside, Vesta is quite the entrepreneur, too. “As an interior designer, I got into product design when I couldn’t find what I envisioned,” she details. “I recall looking for a gas lantern, and everything had looked the same for so long that I decided to create my own that was traditional, yet clean and modern. Successful, I continued on to sconces, as I wanted something elongated on a simple black matte plate with one large crystal that would shine, yet not overpower a space.” Interestingly, she’s even renting fixtures for events such as weddings, dinner 88 ACCESS Magazine / December 2021

parties, and more. Referring to her fixtures as “house jewels,” she continued designing what she couldn’t find, which led her to everything from chandeliers to flooring. Her unique interior hardwood flooring collection is a fresh take on a Southern classic and is offered in shades ranging from the new blondes to the rich and dark tones. Several are created from reclaimed finished solid pine boards from New Orleans. “It’s extra thick and to-die-for gorgeous,” she beams. And yes, she even handles installation. Between her relationships with manufacturers and her husband (who is also a skilled craftsman), she can customize headboards, sofas, club chairs, benches, ottomans, dining tables, throw pillows, and even mantles. If clients want to peruse options from trusted brands, she also has dedicated space to pieces from companies such as Regina Andrew, Gabby, Corbett, Hudson Valley and so many more. And then there’s the window treatments. Offering drapery both ready to go and custom, Vesta is creating a new line of draperies ranging from large, bold patterns to clean yet formal velvets. Need Roman shades? She carries a full line of woven wood and linen options. She’s also proud to present a new

window shading option — a sheer blind that allows you to see through or black out the window. Having completed design projects all over the South in areas such as Highlands, N.C.; Dallas, Texas; and North Florida, she can do it all, whether it’s helping with plans for a new build pre-construction or a simple renovation. “First, I love getting get to know my clients and what their life is like and the character of their home,” she shares. “From there, I present them with design concepts, and once all are in agreement, it’s all systems go!” With a name as unique as she is, Vesta’s father was a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army for 20 years. “We traveled a lot, as he lived in France for six years while serving in the military,” she recalls. “A fan of Europe, he named me after the Temple of Vesta in Rome, Italy, and it’s easy to see where my adoration for European style came from,” Vesta jests. So inspired, she’s even creating a candle line she’s hand-pouring into custom white terracotta pots based on the scents of Italy. The perfect holiday gift, they are 100 percent soy-based and boast relaxing hues of bergamot. In addition to the European influence, Vesta fondly recalls what she refers to as her “paper doll days,” as her mother would give her the Sears catalog to cut out images in order to make rooms for her paper dolls. From there, her passion for all things interior design blossomed into a full-time career. And if that’s not enough, Vesta is also building her dream home in Fairhope. “I’m hoping it will be completed in a few months and I’m so excited about the kitchen — it’s stunning,” she exclaims. “It’s somewhat formal yet inviting and is perfect for gathering. While the outside leans towards high-end Southern traditional (complete with large columns), the inside is French inspired. I can’t wait to share it,” she adds. With two adult sons, five grandchildren (and one more on the way), and one great grandchild, we don’t know how she does it, but she does. Visiting her store transports us to both Europe and the South at the same time, wrapping us in all the warmth a home should offer. Plus, her graband-go light fixtures, curtains, and decorative items solve a lot of our last-minute holiday décor dilemmas. Simply put, she loves what she does and is making Southern design accessible at the same time.

When media darling Colton Bradford reached out to ACCESS to fulfill his mother’s 60th birthday dream, we were all in. This hometown sweetheart has long shared his absolute adoration for his mother, Cheryl Elkins, so it was an easy yes for us. But so much more than the requested party and photoshoot, Colton went to work pulling out the knowledge of what she’s learned from her 60 trips around the sun that surely benefit us all. And while it hasn’t always been easy, this one-time single mom opens up to her son about what really matters. As for her son who so brilliantly had the insight to inquire about her journey and vital life lessons? We’re so very glad he did.

A

llow me to introduce myself: I’m Colton Bradford. I’m 28 years old and I was born and raised in Saraland, Alabama. I was raised by a single mom and a very tiny, tightknit family. At 21, my life and career moved me away from the small town that shaped who I was to one of the biggest cities in the country to shape the man that I’m becoming. For nearly the last seven years, I’ve called the great city of Boston, Massachusetts my “home.” I wake up every morning and rush to work inside a busy television studio to interview newsmakers, celebrities, and interesting people the world should know. If I’ve calculated correctly, I’ve done nearly 2,500 interviews over the last seven years, but none as interesting as this one. You see, this interview came to be when I was on the phone with my mom while driving home one night. I was fiddling with my car stereo, when I casually asked, “Hey, you’re turning 60 in a few months. What do you want?” She assuredly replied, “I want a J Lo-esque photoshoot, Colton. I want people to see a picture of me and say, ‘Holy Sh*t! She’s 60?!’” I sat quietly in the car listening to her in that moment knowing exactly what my next move was going to be. I was going to interview my mom and get her the photoshoot of her dreams.

Fast forward through many calls with my long-time friends at ACCESS regarding everything from the champagne, clothing, and cake, the dream date became a reality. Having snuck into town the night before her big 6-0, I surprised this giving woman with a trip home. However, the big surprise was yet to come the next morning, November 6th, when I brought her to Fairhope’s Hope Farm for what she presumed was to be a nice brunch. As we were led up the stairs to the private dining room, my mother was greeted by family, friends, and the editors of ACCESS who were party-ready with a beautiful table and racks of glamourous clothing. Everyone yelled, “Surprise,” and boy, did we surprise her. In shock, she was practically moved to tears as she was pulled into the hair and makeup chair as we chatted over outfits, sipped champagne, and grazed on charcuterie. I will never forget the look on her face. From there, the music blared as I watched my mother transform before my eyes. She so deserved this. I couldn’t have been happier. As we clicked our way through the venue, I could see that inner beauty my mother possesses reveal itself in each and every frame. It was a dream come true for us both. With the images secured, all that was left to do was capture her thoughts as she met this milestone. Straight from my hero on turning 60, take a look inside the mind of a woman who’s lived it, loved it, and persevered through it all.

1. ON THE OPINIONS OF OTHERS: They don’t nor will they ever define the woman I am. What defines you is your character… it’s how you treat people that don’t look, think, or feel like you. It’s how you speak to a stranger. It’s your heart and your heart’s intentions. I have lived a whole life and all that comes with it, mistakes and all. I call the biggest tribulations in my life “assignments for refinement.” If I’m going to be defined by anything it’ll be my grit, grace, and my pearls, not from anyone’s opinion of me.

2. ON YOUR BODY AND BODY IMAGE ISSUES: I have been overweight, and I have been underweight. I think nearly every woman struggles with image issues at some point. Here’s what I know for sure: your mind, body, and spirit are connected. They all work together. Be mindful of what you put into your body. I don’t just mean food. What you read, what you watch, and who or what you’re listening to has a direct correlation to your overall happiness and wellbeing. Take stock in everything. Stay active and remember time only moves in one direction: forward. Don’t fall into old habits that aren’t helping you to evolve into your best self.

3. ON TRUE FRIENDSHIP: True friends always have your back. They cheer you on when you’re at your highest, lift you up at your lowest, and maybe most importantly, defend you in your absence. Take notice when someone you treat as a friend is gossiping or speaking negatively about someone else. Ask yourself, “Can this person put themselves in someone else’s shoes?” If they’re quick to label someone else, always remember that labels belong on packages, not people. All you need are a few tried-and-true friends. It is absolutely quality over quantity.

4. ON HANDLING TRAGEDY: I believe that we serve best in an area where we’ve experienced the most pain because we can understand and feel from experience. After my mother suffered from Alzheimer’s, I began to get involved with charities that aligned with work to cure what I watched someone struggle to live with. It is healing to be involved. I believe that’s a part of our divine assignment — to do our part to fix what is broken. Look at the hand that you’ve been dealt and question how you can help someone else play the game with those cards. There is joy in healing.

5. ON FINDING TRUE LOVE LATER IN LIFE: Oh, this is easier said than done, but the truth is to let things flow naturally. When I was younger, I got caught up in the idea of the relationship rather than the reality of the relationship. When I was in my 20s I thought I needed to be married by a certain age. Ladies, don’t settle because this is what you think society thinks you should do. In my 30s I felt as though I needed to find someone to help be a father to you. There were a few self-inflicted wounds, and I had to learn the hard way for that. By my 40s I’d really begun to know and love myself and I was okay being on my own. I knew I could do all of this on my own. At that point, I wasn’t caught up in fairytales anymore. That’s when true love found me because I was no longer looking for it. I know it sounds cliché, but it is the truth. It’ll find you. Be patient and continue to love yourself first. Be patient.

6. ON LIVING LIFE WITH OPTIMISM: Happiness isn’t just a mindset; it’s a choice. It’s a choice that you must make every single day and in every single situation. I meditate, I pray, I practice gratitude. You have to look for the good in the bad (and I don’t mean that casually). Sometimes you have to *really* dig down deep and look. You have to identify the gain in the pain. With time, I think the steadier you become, the wiser you become, and the more aligned you become. There is magic in listening to yourself and magic in knowing you are constantly evolving and healing from something. When you can see that, grasp it, and understand it… there is divine power in that.

Everyone says their mom is special, but you just proved it. You are different. You are your own woman, marching to a funky little beat all your own. You are beautiful and smart and kind and empathetic and loving. How awesome is that? To know you is to love you. To watch you become the woman you are today makes me beam with such pride. I might’ve teared up a few times writing this, because the greatest joy I have as your son is watching you grow to become this woman. You did this all on your own. I am so lucky to be your reflection. Everything that I am today and anything I become tomorrow is because of you.

Happy 60th Birthday, Mom. I love you more than cornbread. — Colton

REDEFINING MID-LIFE Dear Friends, Leaping into the aesthetic world was a natural move for us, and it seems our hunch was right. However, the reward of helping women look and feel their best has proven more satisfying than we ever could’ve imagined. As busy moms approaching middle age ourselves, we’re always looking for manageable ways to stay healthy and youthful. With so many life-enhancing options under one roof, we’re truly glowing over our HydraFacials. For starters, a HydraFacial is one of the most effective, non-invasive skin resurfacing treatments available. That means no down time. Vital to each of us personally, we know it’s important to our clients as well. And just as the name denotes, a HydraFacial offers what one typically envisions when getting any kind of facial — cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, and more. However, adding the hydra (short for hydration) is where the magic happens. Why? Our skin loses its ability to retain moisture as we age which results in fine lines and a dull appearance. Aiming to restore moisture once the dead skin cells and impurities are removed, our treatments effectively deliver moisturizing serums deep into the skin.

If you’ve had a close encounter with Angela McCool-Pearson, MD, FACOG, and Christy James Guepet, MD, FACOG, FPMRS of Fairhope’s Southern Women’s Specialists, you’ve probably muttered to yourself, “I’ll have what they’re having.” Pushing through middle age like so many of us, this dynamic duo is not only committed to all things female health-related, but they’re helping us keep up with our appearance, too. Indisputably intertwined, the good doctors’ holistic approach to beauty and wellness confirms it’s an inside and outside job. With their recent expansion into the aesthetics world, they share their latest findings on that elusive fountain of youth.

While one may need Google to understand the varied serums and their benefits, a HydraFacial is simply about the moisturizing delivery system and how deep it reaches into the skins layers to create effective change. Obviously advocates of good skin care, nothing-over-thecounter can reach deep enough to deliver the same results. We suggest one of our three HydraFacials to offset the effects of aging and sun damage. Again, there’s no down time, which essentially means there’s no down-side to trying one of these treatments. Our Classic HydraFacial deeply cleanses, exfoliates, extracts, and hydrates the skin utilizing super serums filled with antioxidants, peptides, and hyaluronic acid. While the peptides stimulate collagen production and improve skin texture, the hyaluronic acid removes dead skin cells and prepares your skin to better absorb other products and stimulates the growth of smooth, evenly pigmented new skin. Our Deluxe HydraFacial is an invigorating treatment that includes the same essentials as the Classic option while addressing specific skin concerns with a serum of your choice. Our range of serums can fight everything from sun damage to wrinkles and more. This treatment concludes with LED Light Therapy which is able to penetrate the skin at different depths to further reduce the visible signs of aging by helping the skin rejuvenate and heal. Lastly, our Platinum HydraFacial is the ultimate experience! We begin the detoxification process with lymphatic drainage massage to remove toxins built up around the face and neck tissues. Once the skin is prepped, we add the serum of your choice as well as a hydrojelly mask and neck massage. This treatment concludes with LED Light Therapy to further reduce the visible signs of aging. With an option (and gift certificate!) for all, we hope to see you and yours this holiday season. Here’s to making you merry and bright!

Rebecca Pickett knows the power of a smile. As the treatment coordinator at Pickett Orthodontics, she’s seen the life-changing impact orthodontic treatment can have on the selfconfidence of their patients, all emerging empowered by their new smiles. By Rebecca Pickett

It’s safe to say the pandemic has impacted every one of us in some unfortunate way, yet dental and orthodontic offices across the country are busier than ever! How could that be? Well, we think it is likely linked to something pretty simple — a good smile makes you feel better!

We wish you a very Merry Christmas!!!

After all the twists and turns Covid has presented, people are looking for a way to bring back positivity, and what better way than through an amazing smile? Here, I’ve listed some positive things a smile can do for you: 1. Reduces Stress Research shows that a smile actually relieves stress by releasing neurotransmitters in the brain, and these chemical messengers can affect your state of mind. Dopamine controls a person’s emotional responses by lowering blood pressure. Endorphins are our bodies’ natural painkillers, and serotonin acts as an antidepressant. 2. Improves Self-Esteem Generally, individuals with crooked or dark-colored teeth don’t tend to smile as much. They are also less likely to be confident during conversations and miss out on memory-making experiences. The No. 1 reason patients tell me they’re interested in orthodontic treatment is because they want to improve their self-confidence. 3. Connects People It has been said that a smile is a universal language, and it’s true! A smile helps other people feel included and makes you more approachable. In essence, we can feel another person’s positivity when we see them smile.

4. Provides a More Youthful Appearance It’s true that it takes fewer muscles to smile than it does to frown. This means frowning can contribute to facial wrinkles. Also, straight, whiter teeth add light and glow to a person’s face. Until Next Time, - Rebecca Pickett

A LABOR OF LOVE Hello! Developing the next generation of leaders within your business is as essential as cultivating a core workforce. Nurturing leadership brings your business to next-level success. Think of it this way, if you will. A company’s workforce could have up to five generations working side by side. However, as more experienced professionals retire, the leadership gap they leave behind could be an issue for the business. Despite the imminent demand for leadership positions, a study by the Human Resources Professionals Association revealed that 63 percent of millennials report a lack of leadership development within their organizations. To ensure businesses don’t face a leadership shortage, developing the next generation of leaders is key. Below, I’ve listed proposals for you or your current leadership if you’re not already focused on this aspect of your company. 1. Offer Employee Development Opportunities According to LinkedIn’s Workplace Learning Report, 94 percent of employees say they would stay at an organization longer if offered more growth opportunities. Professional growth is important for employees, but few are content with the existing opportunities offered. Another recent study cited 30 percent of employees consider career development opportunities “very important,” but only 30 percent of workers are happy with what they currently receive. To ensure you retain your workforce, offer employee development opportunities. Whether it’s an online course, virtual training sessions, or discounted education rates, building a culture on growth now will pay exponential dividends in the future.

If ever there was a time leadership mattered, it’s now. For most of us, leadership is a learned skill, while some are seemingly born with it. Express Employment Professionals’ co-owner Angela Ashcraft is definitive on the subject — business owners need to foster it in their workers to ensure continued growth and success. 2. Develop a Mentorship Program By connecting young professionals with tenured leaders, employees not only learn and gain wisdom, but leadership also sees gains through productivity and growth. According to NationalMentoringDay.org., 67 percent of companies experienced an increase in employee productivity directly related to mentorship programs, and 55 percent reported mentorships having a direct positive impact on overall profits. 3. Focus on Succession Planning Developing the next leaders to take over key aspects of an organization in the future is what drives employee development. Failure to focus on them can be disastrous in the long term. Have open communication about the future of your business, determine which employees are interested in long-term solutions, and begin cross-training them. Crosstraining is a great way to ensure employees have a well-rounded view of the company and allows leaders to focus on sustainability. 4. Recruit, Train, and Retain! When building a corporate culture of sustainability focused on development and personal growth, it’s important to hire the right workers who fit the values of your company. Recruit individuals with the skills and desire to grow within the company and offer opportunities for them to grow into your next leaders.

Until Next Time, - Angela Ashcraft

pink table talk Ready to ring in the festivities in grand fashion, we should all really glam it up, right? Celebrating 100 years of Gucci, the House of Gucci released 1921 from the Alchemist’s Garden collection. I snagged it as soon as I sprayed it. My other fave is F*#king Fabulous by Tom Ford. The name piqued my interest, but the sexy, leathery scent hooked me. Cosmetically speaking, Chanel’s updated Les 4 Ombres eyeshadow compact will add extra sparkle to your party ensemble. And how about this dry air? Wreaking havoc on my pout, I adore this Pink Lip Mask by Kocostar from macys.com. A pandemic pal, I’m a fan of Gwyneth Paltrow’s site, goop, and their All-In-One Face Oil. I slather it on morning and night and know my gal pals will love it! At my last photo shoot I asked makeup artist Courtney Matthews (@youneedblush) what setting spray she prefers. She shared she was loving ELF’s offering from Target. Great beauty products that don’t break the bank? I’m in! On a recent trip to Nashville to see my daughter and bestie, I stopped by favorite haunt, Mr. Whisker’s Wines and Liquors. I spotted cleverly packaged mixers by With Company and opted for the “Hey Girl” that sounded mojito-esque and the “Bouquet” with notes of lavender. Added to just about any spirit, they’re delicious and the perfect hostess gift. (P.S. There are tons of flavors and recipes on the website, and Mr. Whisker’s delivers.)

When it comes to gifts, Charlotte Kilborn Carey tells us the ones you want are the ones you should be giving. Normally ahead of schedule, this Southern influencer has been jet-setting and is pressed for time. Loading up her online basket, she shares a sneak peek of what’s in her cart.

Totally dating myself, I, for one, am thrilled hair clips are making a comeback! I found these gorgeous options at Anthropologie, as well as these fab candles in the form of Roman busts on Anthropologie.com. Try the male nude candle from Nordstrom.com for a true conversation piece! While in Greece visiting my friend B’Beth, she continued trying to teach me how to be a proficient backgammon player as she’s quite formidable — bless her heart! However, I’ve come to love it and I’ll be gifting these beautiful sets from Christian Lacroix and CB2.com. Then there’s the “Things Rick Astley Will Never Do” t-shirt which made me laugh out loud. Someone puh-lease bring back Rick-Rolling. The gift box from the Giada de Lauretiis collab with Bloomingdales includes her new cookbook and handpicked Italian food staples. Yum! Bravo star Andy Cohen’s witty new book, “Glitter Every Day: 365 Quotes from Women I Love,” is filled with quips perfect for book club or a Dirty Santa party. There are two luxury items burning a hole in my cart that require you to play “I’m So Fancy” as you click away. On a recent Bergdorf Goodman jaunt, I spied the handbag I’ve long been searching for — The Lolita Quilted Chain Bucket Bag by Yves Saint Laurent. Beautiful and functional, this one may have to be for me. While at baggage claim, I noticed a well-heeled woman and almost got whiplash looking at her Gucci Trip Booties. These boots are F-I-N-E, and so worth the shameless covet. Perhaps the penultimate in unusual gifting is Jayne Wallace. Yep, the medium to the rich and famous has even hung her shingle at London’s prestigious department store, Selfridges. Too lavish? Try a remote reading at @psychicsisters.co.uk, or just check out the cool merch. I have it on good authority minds will be blown! Clearly, gifting is my love language as it feels so much better to be the giver than the receiver. However, I won’t mind if you tell me how much you enjoy my column; I’ll take a compliment any day! See you on the pink carpet!
