A

s the Access team and I set out to create this issue, we noticed one thing—everyone is beyond busy. Although the word ‘busy’ is almost overused to the point of meaningless, racing from photoshoot to photoshoot revealed that everyone is indeed maxed out in the time department. And local hero Dr. Clare Carney who has just returned from serving a tour of duty with the Alabama National Guard in Poland, is no exception.

Home for just over a week, this Major mom went right back to seeing patients as she and her family readjusted to her having been gone for four long months. Our adored building duo, the Cochran brothers, are also crunched for time as restoring one of the Bay’s most historical homes has provided all sorts of twists and turns. This preservation project is fascinating and so enthralled, we’ve decided to document the journey as the challenges of such a significant task provide interesting learning opportunities for all home enthusiasts. Not to be outdone, local healthcare providers open up about tough topics ranging from sexual disfunction to the absolute disadvantages of delaying those oh-so-important screening tests like pap smears and more. Lastly, in the name of joy, we lighten the load with some of our favorite local spring décor items to inspire outdoor entertaining at its finest before it gets too hot. Making time for memorable occasions is self-care, isn’t it? Knowing you’re also pressed for time, we hope you’ll take a break and indulge in this special issue. Enjoy!

BAY AFFAIR Bayside Academy’s scenic bluff overlooking Mobile Bay was the perfect setting for their annual Bay Affair. Guests in chic attire celebrated in style, making this year’s event a record-breaking fundraiser for the students and faculty. UNITED FRONT Meet Clare Carney, MD, PhD. Just back from Poland after serving in Alabama’s National Guard for four dark months away from her practice, patients and family, we not only salute her, we adore her! As half of what we call the “Carney Duo,” she’s married to Dr. Jack Carney and together they’re raising two active boys, Jacob, 15, and Max, 13, and curating a beautiful home, art collection, and life. Safely home, she opens up about her boots-on-the-ground experience, her newfound appreciation for family, sunshine, sushi, and women’s health in general.

I

t’s hard not to have mad respect for this petite powerhouse. As an in-demand physician at Alabama Medical Group, she’s not only killing it at motherhood, she’s also happily married and a Major in the Alabama National Guard. Born in Beeville, Texas, Clare grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, and later moved to Mobile, where she attended McGill-Toolen Catholic High School. She later went on to further her education by earning a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Doctor of Medicine from the University of South Alabama, as well as a PhD, in Chemistry from Vanderbilt University—now that’s what I call a whole lot of schooling!

Being patriotic and looking at a lot of debt, she explains, “I joined the National Guard while in medical school as a way to help pay for my education. At the time, the Guard paid us a stipend while in school. Other branches paid more, but with the Guard I could go to any residency program, military or not, and live where I wanted. The other branches generally send students to military residency programs around the country, and I knew I didn’t want to only serve the young, relatively healthy military population.

I wanted experience with the more complex general population that included the young and old. It was appealing that I was also exempt from deployment while in school and during my residency.”

Since joining the military, Clare’s been called to active duty twice. Once in 2020 at the onset of the pandemic, where she worked with the state surgeon helping with the Force Health Protection program. This is one of the U.S. Army’s most critical priorities, as they have a responsibility to keep the forces medically ready and protected from health and safety threats, both on and off-duty. And she’s just returned from a tour of duty in Poland. With the crisis taking place in Ukraine that’s dominating the headlines, we’re all ears about her recent journey.

Diving in, she jokes about her deployment, “It’s a bit like deciding when to have a baby—there’s never really a perfect time!” Getting serious, she adds, “I was in Poland to provide medical care to United States soldiers participating in a yearly project called Atlantic Resolve, where troops from all over the world come together to train. They learn about each other, how to work with soldiers from other countries, and how

to work together on the battlefield in a more cohesive manner. You’re definitely hearing about this on the news! Interestingly, this has been an active program for years. There are 8–10 Forward Operating Sites (FOS) in Poland and several in Romania and other small countries surrounding Russia. For years, the US has been building this as a protective measure against potential aggression from the East. During my deployment, I was there for the buildup of troops and worked with five other healthcare providers to run a Level II Medical Clinic, which is like an Urgent Care on the military base.”

I was curious about her living conditions and how they differed to what we are all accustomed to. When asked, she shares, “I was gone for four months and spent three of those months with boots on the ground in Powidz, Poland, at Baza 33—this is a Polish Airbase that’s located in a very small town. I stayed in an old no-frills military barracks. I was fortunate as the other option was a tent and it’s winter there. With the water mostly off between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., a hot shower was almost like Russian roulette.

I’d contemplate the risk before shampooing as at any minute the water could turn ice-cold or just off. And the plumbing is something I’ll never forget—even flushing toilets was a gamble. And of course, the DFAC (military meals) left a lot to be desired. I’ve never missed sushi so much in my entire life!”

As for the Polish people, she says, “Wow. To witness firsthand the efforts and sacrifices of the Polish people to help Ukrainian refugees was simply incredible. Polish mothers were leaving strollers full of diapers and formula at the train stations for the fleeing Ukrainian

mothers. All around me, the Polish citizens were creating fundraisers such as concerts to get supplies over the border. Even our translators were making runs to pick up Ukrainian families from the train stations to drive total strangers as close as they could to their next destination.

It was amazing to see everyone united in trying to help, which made it hard to leave knowing I could’ve been even more helpful as a civilian in terms of assisting the refugees. This is something I struggled with.”

Missing out on everything from Christmas with family to enjoying decent meals, Clare was able to carve out joy. “Wandering around my little town, I was able to find small restaurants that served meals as good as any five-star restaurant I’ve been to. The Polish people love to celebrate. I’ll never forget the New Year’s Eve fireworks display—it was so big and beautiful!”

With an eight-hour time difference, calls home we’re difficult, but her passion for reading was her saving grace during the lonely hours. Regarding the winter, she tells us, “I really noticed the absence of sunshine.

We’re so lucky to have clear blue skies and plenty of sunshine in Mobile. The sun came up around 9:30 a.m. and was gone by 3 p.m. each day. The brightest day there was like a dark and gloomy winter day at home. Talk about Seasonal Affective Disorder and vitamin-D deficiency—it was depressing! The locals burned fossil fuels to keep their homes warm, so a thick black smoke always filled the sky.”

Feeling grateful that what she faced in terms of medical care was manageable, Clare turned her focus to returning home. “Missing your own family while watching other families endure unimaginable hardships was tough. I can honestly say I know how lucky I am and that

motivated me to help all I could. When it came time to return home, I first had to go to demobilization at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, for check-ups and debriefing. Once home, I had just over a week before returning to work, which was great since I got to spend much-needed time with my family.”

Coming home was quite an adjustment, too.

“While my arrival was happy, it was hard because I knew I couldn’t just come back in and immediately make changes, as my family had formed their own routines. They say it’s common for military people to feel like their place has been usurped or that they’re not necessary. But, I also knew it is just part of the readjustment process of a soldier,” she observes.

That’s where her husband Jack comes in. “Jack was my rock while I was gone. Not only did he ensure my kids were fed, taken to school, did their homework, and made it to cross country practice and meets, he took care of my parents and brother as well. This took a huge burden off of me while I was away,” she shares.

As the other half of this duo, Jack is also impressive. A Mobilian, Jack met Clare when they we’re both just 16 (on her actual birthday!). Off at college, the couple began dating and she says, “Jack and I went to grad school at the same time, so we both had similar schedules, which was nice. We’re able to play off each other’s strengths, which makes us a strong team.” Jack earned the letters

PhD like Clare, and is a licensed psychologist. His business, Clarity Health, provides insightful phycological evaluations and consultations.

His scope is wide and encompasses everything from diagnosis to determining aspects related to child custody, parenting capacity, ADHD, and criminal evaluations.

Jack details life at home with Clare gone, saying, “‘Divide and conquer’ has been a recurring theme in our household. In my wife’s absence, I no longer had my best friend to divide and conquer the homework, carpool, etc. When I felt stretched too thin, I just reminded myself ‘to be good enough,’ not perfect. Giving myself some grace allowed me to dial down some of my own anxiety. Using chores as an opportunity to grow closer with my boys was also an upside.

No longer ‘divide and conquer,’ it became ‘Let’s work together and talk while folding the laundry and loading the dishwasher as a team.’ Clare’s deployment was a reminder that you can build happiness and relationships in other areas of your life, even amid uncertainty, if you allow yourself to do so.”

In her civilian life, Clare is known as Dr. Carney and works as an internal medicine physician at Alabama Medical Group in Mobile. As for her call to medicine, she adds, “I love people and science. Medicine is a great combination of the two. I get to be a bit of a body mechanic— figuring out what’s going on and finding a resolution.” A physician

and a girly-girl herself, she does it all, including Botox, dermal fillers, and PRP hair restoration treatments, to name a few. Speaking from personal experience, her work is flawless and she’s definitely the kind of physician who gives her patients the time and individualized care they deserve.

Clare is also quite the women’s health advocate and shares, “Many women put off routine screenings and tests since the pandemic and are now overwhelmed by all the appointments they need to make. If there’s a family history (mother, sister, aunt) of breast cancer, a mammogram should be a top priority. It’s time we all get back on the prevention horse. Start by asking your doctor which ones are most critical for you.”

Another priority, especially for those living on the Gulf Coast, is skin cancer screenings. “I advise annual screenings starting as young as 20. If

you’ve had skin cancers treated, a lot of sun exposure (especially when younger), or a family history, it’s even more important to go once a year. Colon cancer screenings are now recommended at 45 years of age, and this is one people often put off. But if you’ve ever seen someone suffer with colon cancer, you’ll quickly accept the embarrassment,” she explains with a bit of humor.

Being married to a psychologist means she’s naturally a mental health advocate. “Impacted by the pandemic, depression and anxiety are the top complaints in terms of mental health. Going hand in hand with this is chronic fatigue, insomnia, and socializing issues, which in turn make the depression and anxiety worse. When we’re separated from one another, we cease to see a common ground and tend to focus on our differences. It’s crucial for people to see each other face to face so we

remember we are all the same.” Clare emphasizes.

Addressing work-life balance, she adds, “Many patients (especially women) struggle with this. I think we try to meet a standard of keeping the house clean, the kids set for school, and cooking dinner on top of working outside the home. We often have a hard time saying ‘no,’ which results in putting our own healthcare needs on the back burner.

It’s clear from visiting the Carney’s home that they’ve prioritized and created a place for rest, peace, and family relating. While it’s high design at its finest, it’s deeply personal with meaningful art pieces and comfy furnishings for teenage gatherings. There’s also the computer room where Jack and the boys spend time together on their supervised devices, and, yes, time-limited phones. For Clare, she gets her rest and relaxation in her “no boys allowed” sewing room. So, from Star Wars light saber wars to workouts in their fully equipped home gym and outdoor family runs, the Carney Duo have quite possibly figured out their happily ever after.

hen it comes to the history of the Bay area, Louis Craig Roberts, aka Craig, is not only a trusted source, he’s in the center of it all. Debonair, worldly, and oh-so-charming, Craig is one of the top architects in demand for transforming past structures into functional gems. Imagining him in his element would most likely conjure up an image of a royal descendent donning a perfectly wooly sweater burrowed into a wingback chair surrounded by books and architectural drawings next to a historically significant fireplace roaring with flames. There may even be a pipe involved. He is everything. Why? In his hands (and head), he holds our history.

And, historically speaking, the Bay is flooded with significant and just

plain fascinating structures and stories. Indisputably in a growth spurt in our area, it’s important to share these stories of yore with new and established residents as they risk being lost. Also, knowing these stories adds so much pleasure to living here and it just makes us all feel a bit smarter, right?

For Olde Towne Daphne homeowners Amy and Matt McDonald, honoring history played a big role in their current home renovation project that they never wanted. With two young daughters, Amy and Matt excitedly took ownership of their move-in-ready Bayfront dream home in 2015. Nestled on a picturesque lot with a magical view and room to grow in, they had found their forever home. And for three years, life happily hummed along until the dream became a nightmare.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Sound dramatic? Perhaps, but listening to Amy and Matt tell the story of how termites literally ate their home from the inside out is truly the stuff of night terrors. Fast forward to today and the couple is hard at work with their carefully curated team of local experts. All committed to returning the home to its former glory, this project is far from complete.

With its fascinating past, attention to every detail is being considered in the name of preservation. Now referred to as the Cullum-LeaCaffey home, the exact date of its origin is fuzzy but experts place it around 1846 and confirm it to be one of the oldest homes in the area.

It’s listed by the Alabama Historical Commission as one of the finest representations of a Gulf Coast Greek Revival cottage, which has also landed it on the National Register of Historic Places. The name is a combination of the few families that have called it home over time.

As most know, the port of Mobile saw a lot of action during the Civil War. Perfectly positioned, Point Clears’ Grand Hotel was turned into

a base hospital for Confederate soldiers. It was even guarded by the 21st Alabama Infantry. With its Bay access and proximity to The Grand Hotel, the Cullum-Lea-Caffey home went from family abode to triage center. Treating emergency wounds of soldiers pulled from battle, the homes long shutters were even used as stretchers to quickly carry the wounded from the Bay to the home in hopefully enough time to stabilize the patients until they could be sent down-river to The Grand Hotel for further medical attention and recovery.

As you walk the vast property between the Bay and the home, you can imagine the frenzied soldiers running about where there now lies a breathtaking pool and outdoor entertainment area. The property even boasts one of the oldest and tallest China Fir trees that was planted around 1880. Historically recognized, it even receives visitors of its own. The fact all this is in the McDonalds’ backyard is as astounding as the land’s original $391 price tag in 1845.

Clearly a local treasure, the McDonalds took this challenge seriously and chose the talented building duo Geoffrey and Jared Cochran, who in turn presented the team just right for a project of this significance. As brothers and owners of the esteemed Cochran Builders Inc., they specialize in high-end architectural home builds and large renovations around the Bay area and Gulf Coast.

“It gives us a sense of pride to add our name to a property that was built before we were even thought of. Historical projects are both fun and challenging as we can’t go rogue on even the smallest detail. Having an architect with a background in historical homes on the team is key,” Jared tells us.

Enter Craig. Committing to just one to three projects per year, Craig brings with him his unmatched architectural skills and historical knowledge and connections with historical societies.

This is important since every piece of the home carries significance and all changes must be approved by various organizations. “Chosen for his extensive work with historical homes, Craig’s love of local history and the fact he’s on the Architectural Review Board for the Mobile Historic Development Commission means he is probably one of the most valuable historians we have left on the Gulf Coast. His comprehensive knowledge and his contacts, not only locally, but nationally, are invaluable to projects of this magnitude,” Geoffrey shares.

In total agreement, Jared adds, “Craig ensures the history and integrity of this home will be preserved. There were so many questions to address before the planning could even begin—is it on the national registry, where are the records, how do we get approvals, what’s allowed, etc. Obviously more complicated than a new build, the finished product will be more than worth it. As builders, we’re witnessing firsthand how things were done before all the technology we have at our fingertips today. Those builders were definitely talented craftsmen. Used to big projects, taking apart this home and putting it back together is a big challenge, but it’s what we love to do. Making sure all the termites and damaged wood are removed has been the main task so far.”

Visiting the home opened our eyes to the level of planning and craftmanship this renovation requires. Looking like a typical job site, we were wowed by a board with samples of the salvaged original moldings created to ensure all new moldings are replicated exactly as

they were all those years ago. “Deas Millworks has been a big part of this project. We wanted to preserve everything we possibly could and his vast knowledge of working with old moldings and windows with weights and fixing any damage to the doors without replacing them has been invaluable. We can’t just go to the store and find the same materials that were used in the 1800s.

Having a great millwork company like Deas to help remake these old pieces is key,” Jared states.

If all goes to plan, the McDonalds will be back in their home in a year’s time. Knowing the importance of including an interior designer in the planning stages, Amy chose Courtney Malouf.

A local talent the Cochran brothers have enjoyed working with for many years, Geoffrey shares, “Having Courtney on board has been great.

You need an interior designer like her to help throughout this extensive build as many design elements can impact building decisions.” Happy with the way her home was, Amy adds, “Courtney and I are refreshing many of our furnishings while planning for the return of several family favorites like the grand piano that sits in the long grand entrance between the front door and back door.”

Humble, kind, and defined by the relationships they build with their clients, Geoffrey and Jared agree that the McDonalds are great clients because they know exactly what they want. “While they want everything new, it’s vital to them that the home remains historically correct. And they will have that as we’ve been able to repurpose a lot and, in the end, it will be the same home they loved made from the best (and termite resistant) materials.”

As for the temperature so far? The McDonalds and the team appear to be in good spirits and tackling the hurdles like champs. Excited for what’s to come—check-ins on how the McDonalds are handling the chaos, expenses, and never-ending decision making, to seeing how new floors are made the old way, and of course to how all of this is going to come together beautifully decorated with no battle scars, we hope you’ll not only stay tuned but buckle up and enjoy the ride, too.

Simply too busy for self-promotion, we think more people should know their aspirations can manifest just like Amy’s have. Managing Director of Organizational Development at Gulf Distributing Company of Mobile, her responsibilities are seemingly endless, yet somehow she manages it all while being married to Lem Baldwin, owner of Pallet Depot of Pensacola, and mom to Luke, 12, and Vivian, 11. Hint? She never said it was easy.

Raised in Novato, California, Amy’s been industrious her entire life. Going to work as soon as it was legal, she shares, “I started working at 14 and have had many jobs since; my least favorite was working alone in a warehouse relabeling coffee filters. It was so boring and for me, boredom is the worst.”

At this point, many list their university degrees, but Amy was staunchly against that route. “I didn’t go to college. In high school my grades were terrible, I couldn’t sit still and I was bored. I knew I was going right into the workforce, which I did,” she explains.

Her ambition and willingness to perform above and beyond enabled her to move from entry-level positions to management. “At my last job, they threw me an amazing going away party. I still get together with them when I visit California,” Amy shares, confirming she makes any company she works at a better place.

After relocating to the South, Amy worked her way into a leadership position at Gulf Distributing. “Over 16 years ago, I started in an entry-level position in the Marketing Department in the Pensacola, Florida warehouse location. It was a lot of fun, and I learned how to use graphic art software, a valuable skill I still use today. From there, I moved into various management roles in the Marketing Department, and now my title is Managing Director of Organizational Development, which enables me to work with all departments,” she clarifies.

Though she comes across as a natural leader, Amy isn’t sure she’ll ever get used to that label. “It’s important to do the best I can for those crazy enough to follow me! I believe in servant leadership and view my role as a sort of guide providing the roadmap to keep us on course. When problems arise, I ask my team to bring them to me with at least one solution. I admit, this is a bit self-serving but my employees are bright and can usually solve problems on their own. I also challenge them, hold them accountable and help them learn from mistakes, which we all make. My COO helps me learn from mine! Most importantly, I acknowledge their contributions. Every employee is different, and I don’t have a onesize-fits-all formula. I go with their flow and try give each of them my best,” she explains.

Asked if she’s encountered challenges working in a male-dominated industry, she quickly sets us straight. “As the youngest of five children, three of them brothers, if I wasn’t loud and

outspoken, I would’ve missed a lot of meals.

Plus, my dad was military, so we moved a lot and I was constantly the new kid. Today, I can see that my childhood really prepared me to be a woman in the workforce. I have never had a problem speaking up for myself. I ask questions without worrying about looking stupid, challenge ideas when I don’t agree, and occasionally I even make ill-timed jokes.

But, I can admit when I am wrong! I learned after having children that one of the greatest skills is being able to accept that you aren’t always right. It’s hard, but once you accept it, it’s really freeing, and that’s when you really start learning from others around you.”

Joking about men, Amy turns thoughtful, saying, “For the most part, the guys at Gulf are my support system, mentors, and champions.

You have to earn people’s respect, whether they’re male or female, and you should also consider whose respect is worth earning.”

With all that said, Amy admits that, oftentimes as one of the only women in the room, she’s been talked over in meetings, had someone take credit for her work, and received belittling comments throughout her career. “I will never forget the time a male customer at an event Gulf was sponsoring told me that my job was to just ‘sit there and look pretty.’ That did not go over well.”

Seeming to have it figured out, Amy shares, “It

took time to learn how to stand up for myself.

You will absolutely find your confidence with age. We all have to stand up for each other and respect one another, regardless of gender. If you’re a woman and you see this happening, stand up for your coworker, and if your organization doesn’t have your back, the job market is pretty good right now,” she chuckles.

Speaking of women in leadership, although Gulf’s founder Freida Maisel was not actively working there when Amy started (though she’s met Ms. Freida several times), she felt her presence immediately. “I always felt like I had the same opportunity as the men at Gulf. When I was promoted to a managing director role, I was fresh off maternity leave. With two kids under two, my husband and I were exhausted.

I was shocked when our Chairman and CEO Elliot Maisel asked, ‘You’re a mom, and mom comes first. What do you need at home?’ I’ll never forget that moment, and think it came from years of Elliot watching his own mother juggle so much. It allowed me to manage with the same flexibility and acknowledgement that work is important, but family must always come first.”

Amy laughs when we ask about work-life balance. “There’s no real balance; it’s mostly a dumpster fire. I do the best I can. As mothers we’re hard on ourselves. I once had a meeting

in Tuscaloosa at noon so I drove four hours, had the meeting, turned around and drove back to be home to dress my kids for the 100th day school celebration. That’s what you do.

Luckily, Gulf has supported me. When my kid is sick they’re like, ‘Amy go, we’ve got you.’

It’s the best feeling, and I try to pay it back as it really takes a village—and grandparents,” she beams.

As for what Amy’s excited about now?

“Currently we’re super focused on improving our overall culture, pay, and rewards programs.

For example, we’re executing an employee development initiative. With many talented individuals on staff, we have realized there is so much potential right under our nose, and we know some of our folks face significant hurdles when it comes to advancement.

Wanting to change that, we’ll offer computer, software training and more. Our goal is to open a pipeline for any employee who wants to learn or progress. “ Fully committed to making the investments needed to effect change, Gulf’s also instituting a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) program, which will lead to even more opportunities for lower-level employees to move up. Amy is firm, saying, “This company was founded by a Jewish woman in 1973 in Mobile, Alabama. Starting out as an underdog, we have an ingrained competitive spirit. We care about talent, drive, skill, and heart. I’m proud the Maisel family has made this culture change initiative a top priority, because the most important part of any organization is the

people.”

As for what her day to day look like, she adds, “My calendar’s always full and I’m usually jumping from one thing to another—whether it’s a marketing, new brand onboarding, educating legislators, or a training and recruitment meeting. I’m constantly reviewing and approving marketing investments, negotiating sponsorship contracts, planning community donations, building presentations, tasting new products (she smiles when she tells us that’s hard), analyzing and improving processes, organizing recruiting tools, talking to employees, organizing lunch or snacks for the team, budget planning or writing announcements, the list goes on. Whatever it is, I do it!” she proclaims as we try to wrap our heads around her myriad responsibilities.

Justifiably proud of Gulf’s care for their workers, Amy is quick to add it’s not just talk—it’s action and money. For example, when Hurricane Michael hit Panama City in 2018, it left the area and their warehouse devastated. Amy recalls trying to locate some of their workers, sharing, “Our teams mobilized immediately going door to door to mark them as safe. The amount of damage our employees suffered was astonishing. We set up a company relief fund in a few hours and Gulf distributed more than $100,000 in the first 60 days. We hired lawyers to assist with insurance claims, supplied food, and of course, beverages. And we’ve done it ever since.”

Amy also oversees all of Gulf’s community giving efforts. And, it’s a lot. “Annually, we

support over 100 charities. Some national or global, but the majority are local like the Salvation Army, Nick’s Kid’s, 100 Black Men, Mobile Bay Keeper, The Saenger Theatre, local schools, and many more. The Multiple Sclerosis Society is close to our hearts, and we’ve participated for years and hosted campaigns led by our Sr. Vice President, Louis Maisel. He recently organized an MS Crawfish Boil at Old Majestic Brewery in Mobile and we raised a sizable donation over spicy crawfish, conversation, good music, and of course, cold beer. Just over 30 years ago, Gulf founded the Lite Scratch Tour, led by my coworker and friend John Racciatti,” she states.

Getting personal, Amy cites “family, food, and beer” as her three favorite things. “I’m fortunate to have a wonderful husband who’s an amazing father and a true partner. My two children maintain good grades, never talk back, and aren’t embarrassed of me, yet. I’m told this will change so I’m enjoying it as much as I can. I walk our dogs a lot—one is an angel and the other is a nightmare, but you can’t have it all, I suppose! My husband and I work a lot, so we like to stay home and entertain on the weekends, and the kids have lots of sleepovers. We don’t mind a loud, full house. In fact we prefer it.” Loud and busy?

We’re not surprised, just inspired.

You’ll be assigned one of four colors, each with unique qualities that further help you understand yourself. A CALL TO JUSTICE

Access is obviously not a political publication. In fact, given the current climate, we’re a break from the boxing ring with stories about locals who make positive contributions to this community. As the editor, I’ve learned when you get a group together, they typically have more in common than they don’t, especially as it relates to our community. So, knowing our readership, I want to talk local crime and brag about my friend.

rime is a popular issue. Even Mobile’s Mayor Sandy Stimpson has said the current prosecution system is failing as we continue to hear about increased shootings from Airport Boulevard to our beloved downtown. As a parent, this is upsetting to say the least. And it seems most are either chatting away about it or they’re in a state of hoping for the best. Me? I do a bit of both.

Wanting clarity, I’m compelled to write about a man I met years ago when I was fresh from the streets of NYC and before Access was a thing. Not yet settled on Southern soil, I navigated new friendships and traditions that would take time and experience to fully understand. Now happily acclimated, I realize there’s been one constant in my journey. That unshakable rock-solid absolute is Buzz Jordan.

I met Buzz soon after relocating, and he’s the kind of person you don’t forget. In business, from marketing to product development, the current trend is about being genuine. I don’t relate to this as it’s never occurred to me to be anything other than genuine. However,

I guess some need to be told. But, for Buzz, being genuine is without a doubt in his DNA. Instantly engaged and all in, offering advice or a helping hand, Buzz truly cares—a lot and about everyone. I’ve only known a few people like this. It’s a short list with Buzz at the top.

Maybe it’s the eye contact and gentle demeanor or the fact that he wholeheartedly believes that change is possible and able to make those around him feel it, too. When I talk to him, it’s as if I’m the only person in the room. Try as I might, I’ve never mastered this to his level.

After giving Mobile’s crime rate a Google spin, I learned it has a big fat “F” grade with a total crime rate sitting at 138% above the national average and 69% when it comes to violent crimes. And the Mobile Police Department just released its official 2021 Crime Report that shows violent crime (murder, rape, aggravated assault, robbery and carjacking) is up nearly 19% and that last year was the deadliest year on record in Mobile.

Yikes. So, I decided to reach out to Buzz to ask him for his story since he’s running for District

Attorney in Mobile and the Primary vote is just around the corner on May 24th. Over a casual lunch, he answered all my concerned-mom questions. Stating my frustration at feeling my votes never add up to direct changes in my life, he assured me this one will.

And he’s right. Voting for our District Attorney directly impacts the safety of our community whether you live in Spring Hill, Midtown, or West Mobile. After all, who doesn’t drive up and down Airport Boulevard?

So, due to current conditions, it’s possible that no vote matters more than this one. “The DA’s office is very powerful. Many think the courts control the grand jury, but the DA’s office does,” Buzz confirms.

Hitting pause, a district attorney, also known as a state attorney, is a law professional who represents the state and county in criminal cases in local courts. They impact investigating, presenting, and sentencing cases against suspected lawbreakers. Simply put, they take criminals off our streets and put them behind bars. The grand jury is typically a jury of 23 people chosen to examine the validity of

an accusation before trial to ensure the court’s time isn’t wasted.

The majority of us know this, but the typical low turnout for local elections suggests otherwise.

Knowing Buzz as a superhuman, I wondered about his reasons for wanting such a tough job, since he has a well-established law practice. “I, too, live in Mobile, and I want violent criminals off our streets. I want them tried and prosecuted immediately.

The failure to prioritize violent and repeat criminals who remain out of jail versus nonviolent offenders is a bad policy for all of us. This literally allows them back on our streets where they commit more crimes, witnesses disappear, and the opportunity for their removal for our safety diminishes.

Unfortunately, this is what’s happening,” he shares.

Asking Buzz if he can really do this, he says, “Make no mistake, as far as crime is concerned, my approach is extremely aggressive, and I’ll stop at nothing to make our streets safe. It can be done. For example, as a parent, which criminal do you want off the street first—the person charged with marijuana possession or the person charged with shooting someone? The fact that the current backlog of more than 140 murder cases are stuck in the DA’s office, with the number continuing to increase, is unacceptable. That equals too many criminals out on bond on our streets awaiting indictment—this is the very definition of insanity. There’s no reason for these delays; it’s a matter of leadership and prioritizing,” Buzz explains.

So, what’s his plan? “The solutions for making these changes lie in my experience.

I not only worked as assistant DA for a decade, I have an additional 20-plus years of unmatched experience in private practice defending the broken families on the receiving end of these violent crimes. I’m mad for them and our citizens. This is why I’m running as the ‘90-Day DA.’ I know I can use my skills and the power of the office to prioritize and expedite the grand jury, the courts, and law enforcement to ensure violent criminals are prioritized and indicted in less than 90 days.

There’s no logical reason for it to take longer,” he firmly states.

With long-established relationships, Buzz has been furthering his plan by working with law professionals to create what’s being referred to as a “Rocket Docket.” These dockets will be the top priority of the court, I can assure you, and those I’ve discussed this with are excited by it,” he adds, not afraid to throw the hammer down.

Further expanding on his experience, it’s important to know Buzz tried over 220 jury

trials with a 95% conviction rate in ten years as an assistant district attorney. As an original member of the DA’s Murder Team, Buzz worked closely with the police department.

“The Murder Team focused on prosecuting horrific crimes—that’s all we did. I took those crimes personally and will continue to do so as it ensures those criminals will pay the price.

I’m coming for them,” Buzz assures me.

We also talk about his training and years of experience spent in prosecuting child abuse cases and how he worked closely with not only the police department but the Child Advocacy Center when it was first organized. It’s wild to compare all the bad he’s witnessed to his kind nature. I’m reminded of driftwood. It’s oddly so smooth, yet you know it’s so tough to have weathered the storms it clearly has.

Buzz is also a small business owner.

No Mardi Gras season would be complete without a trip to his A & M Peanut Shop on lower Dauphin Street, where the 100-year-old roaster still cranks to this day. As we stopped for a picture in Bienville Square we met a little boy wearing, of all things, a Buzz Lightyear shirt. A famed character from the iconic Toy Story film series, Buzz shook his hand and asked his mom for photo-op permission. After a few clicks, Buzz sent the family off to the peanut shop for goodies on the house. And, because that’s who Buzz is, he’s donating 10% of his salary as District Attorney to a program he’ll put into place when elected called “Kids and Cops.”

Through this program is how we get to know the real Buzz. “I come from very humble beginnings, even though I didn’t know it at the time. Growing up in Orlando, Florida, my dad was a career Navy man, and my mom raised my three siblings and me to be kind to everyone. The YMCA was my second home, and I can recall all those around me that impacted my life, from the teachers and religious leaders to the coaches, police, and even the crossing guards I got to know when walking to school.

Getting to help a teacher or being picked as a crossing guard helper and wearing that vest made me feel special; things like that meant the world to me. I had so many people to look up to. I want that for our children, too,” he shares.

Wondering how we’ve gotten so far away from that world, Buzz recalls the famed words of President John F. Kennedy, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country,” came up. Buzz remembers that very day and knows that world and those words inspire him to bring peace to our streets. In

fact, he spent over 20 years volunteering to make a difference. As past president and board member of the Boys and Girls Club of South Alabama and a former counselor and director of the Salvation Army Summer Camp, to work with the Mobile Optimist and Lion Clubs, to the YMCA and the Police Benevolent Association, his proof is in his past.

His Kids and Cops program is a result of having witnessed the lives of countless kids changed when given role models and a place to go and feel safe. He will initiate what he’s learned firsthand—the best way to reduce crime is to address its root causes.

“I have civic contacts all over the city and plan on reaching out to each and every one of them so we can work together to establish positive relationships and role models for our youth. Getting our kids to respect law enforcement and to engage with other civic leaders like the police, fire fighters, the Drug Education Council, teachers, church leaders, veterans, and more is an opportunity to unite our community and impact our youth,” he clarifies.

Additionally, Buzz is committed to complete transparency. “We have a wonderful mayor; he’s done great things for the city with a lot of transparency. I will also be very visible by hosting a monthly press conference

to ensure everyone knows our progress each month,” Buzz confirms.

Understanding how his community service spirit took hold, I asked him what initially drew him to the law. “I had a civics class assignment in the 9th grade. I had to write about the career I wanted to pursue, and the first thing that popped into my head was the big TV show at the time, Perry Mason.

My dad and I watched the courtroom drama together and when I told him about my project, he set up an opportunity for me to interview a local lawyer. Between Perry Mason and all the lawyer had to say, I was hooked!” he laughs.

Prior to law school, Buzz was actually hired as a teacher by his junior high school principal. He loved it and credits his organizational skills to teaching, but he knew he had to go to law school. “After law school, the only job I wanted was to clerk for a United States federal judge, and Mobile’s Judge William Brevard Hand hired me in 1982.

From there, I fell in love with Mobile and have called it home ever since,” he explains.

Whew, this is a big job. But Buzz keeps going. “Baldwin County has a very successful Veterans’ Court, where they ensure our veterans get the proper help for everything from toxin screenings to treatment for mental health issues like PTSD and addiction.

Mobile needs a Veterans’ Court, and I will get it established, too. We need to look at crimes against the elderly, corruption, the 15–25-year-olds easily and illegally getting guns, our low school scores, rise in suicide, and so much more. Yes, there’s a lot of work to be done, but from my years of experience I can say the DA’s office is a powerful platform for change. Now, it simply needs 25-plus years of community experience and leadership to effect positive change.” And, with no sign of stopping, there you have it—the man that’s accepted homemade meatloaf as payment for his legal services, my friend Buzz. Boat graves? Warrior helmets, swords, and a gigantic shield? Sign us up! The History Museum of Mobile’s exciting exhibition The Vikings Begin, which ends June 12th, is the culmination of the exhibition’s first time to leave Scandinavian shores on a five-stop tour of America. We can’t think of a better spot to showcase a decidedly maritime society than the Port City. The highly accomplished Museum Director, Meg McCrummen Fowler, fills us in on what we can expect to see and learn about the early days of the Viking Age.

ou might have noticed the most recent rise of the Vikings in series and movies streaming on virtually every platform. Sea warriors and Norse gods make for great fictional entertainment, but Vikings were so much more than maritime marauders.

Meg tells us, “The Vikings Begin covers the early period of Viking history, demonstrating how isolated farming communities in Northern Europe evolved into the sophisticated, cosmopolitan, and dynamic Norse society.

Viking culture was deeply connected to the water, and that’s one reason this exhibition resonates so strongly in Mobile,” adding, “As

a community rooted in maritime traditions, we understand how the water touches every aspect of life. The exhibition shows how connection to the seas shapes everything about Viking society, from burials to trade to beliefs about the gods and war.”

The exhibition’s artifacts are from the 7th century, making them around 1,400 years old.

And they all came from early Viking boat graves. Now we’re talking. Ship burials were the ultimate expression of status, wealth, and connection for Vikings. (Imagine a mound of dirt big enough to bury a 60-foot boat.)

“The Vikings’ connection to the water was so profound it extended to all areas of their life,

including burial practices. Certain elite Viking warriors would be buried in a boat grave; they would be placed in a boat, along with their weapons and other possessions, which would then be buried under a massive mound.

Meg explains. “Excavating these boat graves gives historians and archeologists critical information about Viking culture. Since there are no written records, information about the culture comes almost exclusively from archeological evidence.” Further, in Norse mythology, boats symbolized safe passage into the afterlife on the same vessel that aided their travels in life, so they played a key role in funeral rites.

During your visit to the museum, you’ll find dozens of artifacts, including decorations from Viking ships, glass beaded jewelry, gorgeous glass beakers (probably acquired in trade with Northern Italy), an intricately carved horse harness, warrior helmets, swords, an enormous shield, and a carved animal head, believed to be the head of a sorceress’ staff. You’ll also learn about the early Vikings’ spiritual beliefs, in which women figured heavily. “Seers and sorceresses were women, and enjoyed higher status. The exhibition covers some of the Viking beliefs about magic and about appeasing the gods through sacrifice,” states Meg, decorously not mentioning that at least some of the sacrifices were humans, since Vikings believed their god, Odin, saw them as the most valuable sacrifice. In addition, there

is a replica of a Viking Burial boat, albeit only two-thirds the size of the ones which were excavated in Sweden.

With no written sources, no religious texts, and no diaries or biographies, this early Viking society has made researchers work hard to learn about them. Artifacts discovered in the boat graves reveal a level of sophistication previously unknown. The early Vikings’ spiritual world was rich and multi-layered.

They farmed the land, but with a maritime outlook; coast, inland waterways, boats, and navigational skills were essential. They communicated with the rest of the world through trade and travel, but simultaneously valued warrior skills. And they were extremely skilled in two crafts—boatbuilding and metal works. Meg adds, “Some visitors have noted

with surprise the delicate nature of some of the objects, which runs counter to the depiction of brutishness—a tiny scale used in trade for weighing silver comes to mind. Much of the decorative silver work demonstrates intricate and elaborate craftsmanship. But make no mistake, battles were brutal and Viking raids were fearsome affairs.”

The takeaway? Meg concludes, “The Vikings Begin is a beautiful and dramatic exhibition that leaves visitors with a sense of awe.

There’s something powerful about being faceto-face with 1400-year-old objects, with all their mystery and magic.”

ith their children mostly grown and approaching the 50-year mark, the almost inseparable doctors met in 2012 as neighbors in Daphne. With so much in common, from a love of pretty pastels and feminine silhouettes to self-care and travel, they’re also bonded by their passion for healthcare. A natural move, the in-demand surgeons joined forces to provide real solutions to help those on the aging front. Dedicated to treating people in all stages of the life, the good doctors share their excitement for their new business and how they’re managing it all.

Curious as to how they met, Dr. Smith explains, “We’ve laughed about it, but it started with our children, who began playing together after we

moved to the neighborhood. Eventually, my family and I were invited on a group vacation and we ended up eating leftovers with Mary and her family. We quickly realized we had a lot in common and truly enjoyed each other’s company. Now a big part of each other’s lives, I’m blessed to call her one of my best friends.”

Nodding and smiling, Dr. Wells adds, “Both working doctor moms, we’ve naturally gravitated toward each other since we understand the struggles of trying to balance home and work life. I’m lucky to call her one of my best friends and it’s easy being business partners. We get things done because we’re so used to making decisions on the go as fellow surgeons!”

it came to maximizing the pandemic. “We’d discussed a mutual interest in injecting neurotoxins for several years, so we decided to get certified during the quarantine. We started with virtual courses and local models and practiced for almost a year on ourselves, friends, and family,” Dr. Wells explains.

Hooked on aesthetics, they amped up their training once things began to reopen. “We went to Tennessee and Florida for master courses and in 2021, we started aesthetic service events at Fairhope Gynecology & Obstetrics (FGO) in the evenings. Our clientele kept growing, so decided to open our med spa since we wanted to offer even more treatments. For Dr. Smith, it was all about the challenge. “I’ve been a surgeon for 15 years and I’ve always loved learning new techniques and pushing myself out of my comfort zone. Starting a business from the ground up was something I’ve always wanted to do but I wasn’t sure how that fit into my career plans. As I’ve gotten older and started to focus on taking care of myself and dealing with the challenges we all eventually face, my interest in aesthetics grew, making this a perfect fit.”

With no plans of stopping, we wonder how they’ll juggle both their in-demand aesthetic practice and their other commitments. Confirming this has been a relatively easy transition because their children are now more self-sufficient, Dr. Smith shares, “Finding balance is an ongoing challenge for us all, but I’m at my best when busy and doing what I

love. It gives me fulfillment to help others feel better with a surgical solution or by guiding them through the aging process.”

With three children each, it’s easy to see the doctors do indeed have a lot in common. Dr. Wells is married to Dr. Dylan Wells, also practicing at FGO, and they’ve happily called the Eastern Shore home since 2005 with their three children: Drew, 17, Amelia, 14, and Wesley, 11. Originally from Tennessee, she went to medical school after earning a master’s in neuroscience. “My father was a pediatrician and I always tagged along during his rounds and worked summers in his office. Inspired by his practice and patient relationships, I decided medicine was my true calling. As a gynecologic surgeon, I get to see patients of all ages, deliver babies, and operate on women, which allows me to fix problems.

This has extended into applying my training and knowledge to helping people age on their own terms.”

Married to Craig with three daughters: Misty Kate, 15, Ansleigh, 11, and Hollins, 8, Dr. Smith was born and raised in Bay Minette.

Calling Daphne home for the last 10 years, she tell us, “I chose to stay close to home to attend the University of South Alabama. With a degree in biomedical science, I continued to the school of medicine, completed my general surgical residency and even served as Chief Resident in my last year.”

Growing up, Dr. Smith never understood why anyone would choose such a long, hard career path, but a devastating event would change that. “I had plans to attend Auburn, but my younger sister was in a car accident.

My family and I spent three unbearable days at USA Medical Center before she passed.

Devastated and unsure how to move forward, I felt I needed to stay with my family. During that time, God put so many people in my life that directed me toward the medical field. With hopes of making a difference, I redirected my career plans and two weeks into my surgical rotation, I knew I made the right decision. To this day, I still love that I get to help others and make their life a little better.”

Clearly committed to all facets of healthcare, the doctors will continue their work at FGO and Surgical Association of Mobile. “I have no plans of retiring from OB/GYN any time soon! I love how both practices overlap.

Knowing both medicine and anatomy has allowed me to fill a creative need I’ve been missing; I can help patients look and feel better

about their body changes that occur with age,” Dr. Wells tells us. In agreement, Dr. Smith adds, “I love that I can continue my surgical practice and I’m also super excited about our new adventure. t a recent sit-down with Dr. Pierce and Dr. Hunter, our jaws were literally on the floor. Women’s healthcare is a common topic we cover and we thought we knew so much. We were wrong. Also guilty of delaying our common screenings like pap smears and mammograms due to the pandemic and life in general, we didn’t understand the serious ramifications if we don’t wake-up and make our own health a priority. And we get it. We, too, like most, live our lives at a seemingly unsustainable pace, putting the needs of others above our own. Admitting we’re almost blind to the caution tape that surrounds us by choice isn’t an overstatement. Simply put, our own needs can be draining.

However, ladies, it’s time for us all to channel our inner Cher and tell ourselves to snap out of it. Acknowledging our busyness, we’ve made a cheat-sheet so you can avoid long articles full of medical jargon that leave you dazed and confused. Meet Jennifer Young Pierce, MD, MPH, FACOG. Sorry for all the letters but this MCI Fellowship-Trained Gynecologic Oncologist deserves that respect.

As we met, she was not only on a Zoom call with Stanford, she was dropping facts fast and getting her makeup done, too. Her most pressing message? “We’re experiencing firsthand what happens when women miss a seemingly simple pap smear. We not only lose time for treatment options; we’re seeing more death.” And the most common death is being caused by cervical cancer. “Alabama is first in the nation for cervical cancer mortalities,“ she further explains, adding, “ I’ve seen women that had an abnormal pap smear just before the pandemic that didn’t follow up for over six months who are now facing a latestage cervical cancer diagnosis. In that short time span, the cancer spread and their only treatment options are chemotherapy, radiation, and a lifetime of healthcare measures. It’s more than probable that if detected earlier, their cancer could have been rectified with a much simpler surgical procedure. That’s how vital these screenings are.”

Having made herself clear, Dr. Pierce acknowledges there’s conflicting information out there as to when to smear. Her top advice?

“Discuss this with your doctor and ensure they know your personal and family history. Past cervical treatments need to be shared with your doctor no matter how long ago you had them, as you may be more prone to future cancers.

And never, ever underestimate an abnormal pap smear. Caregivers often try to calm our fears and some of us read this as everything’s okay when it’s not. All abnormal pap smears need further evaluation.”

Dr. Pierce is most passionate about the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) prevention. While a pap smear is a procedure that checks cells from the surface and surrounding area of the

cervix under a microscope for cervical cancer or cell changes, the HPV vaccine protects us from infection that leads to the formation of several cancers. More specifically, HPV vaccinations protect us from the greatest risk of cervical cancer. “The rates of having HPV are 1 in 4 for men and 1 in 5 for women. Also, if you get a negative pap smear, there’s only a 60% chance that you’re fine. With the HPV vaccine and a negative HPV test, it goes up to 99%. That’s significant and why I and all my children have been or will be vaccinated. The rule of thumb is the younger the better (think 9 years old) as that’s when our immune systems are most responsive. Not only is the HPV

vaccine a recommended preventative measure for women in lowering their risk of cervical cancer, it’s been the most widely studied vaccine of our time, with decades of data to back up its success,” she tells us.

So what exactly is a human papillomavirus?

In a nutshell, it’s an asymptomatic virus transmitted through the skin that can lead to all kinds of cancers. With no symptoms, Dr. Pierce has seen HPV-related cancers everywhere from the head and neck to the genitalia, since it’s not limited to the cervix.

More? It’s more common than the common cold. “I’m so passionate about women getting their pap smears and HPV vaccinations because I want them to live and have those magical moments we all dream about. That hope is what drives me every day.”

In total alignment, Rachel L. Hunter MD, a Fellowship-Trained Breast Surgical Oncologist at MCI, knows all too well what’s lost when a woman skips out on her mammograms. “It sounds redundant, but women need to make their annual mammograms a priority. It’s worth fighting for because missing even one year can be detrimental,” she tells us. And by detrimental, she means the difference between

catching cancer in an early stage versus a later stage. Obviously, the later the detection, treatment options and outcome potential alter significantly.

The big question is, pandemic or not, why would we put ourselves in this position?

Interestingly, Dr. Hunter shares the good news for those who comply, “When it comes to breast cancer, early stage detection means a 93% higher survival rate in the first five years.”

Not wanting to overwhelm you, we will sneak in that Dr. Hunter’s top screenings not to miss are mammograms, pap smears, colonoscopies and, of course, getting the HPV vaccine. It’s cancer and cancer spreads, so we had to share.

Much like pap smears, confusion as to how often a woman should have a mammogram exists. The American College of Radiology and Society of Breast Imaging now recommend that all women be evaluated for breast cancer risks no later than age 30. In tandem with Dr. Pierce, Dr. Hunter states, “Everyone needs to know their family history and share it with their doctor—even if you’re in your twenties and thirties. Your family history includes first-degree relatives such as your mother, father, and siblings. It’s all relevant, especially when there’s a history of breast, ovarian, and cervical cancer. Starting at 40 years old, all women should have a mammogram every year. Depending on your risk factors, your doctor should determine if you need to start younger and have them more frequently. And high-risk patients should request to see a specialist like myself.”

Hopefully, women will start to see a basic mammogram as a breast cancer prevention tool and a time-buying, life-saving screening not to be missed. Luckily, if the worst happens, we have the leading cancer care provided by the most talented physicians in the country right here in our own backyard at MCI. As middle-agers themselves, they’re adamant that no woman should suffer, or carry shame, when it comes to the enjoyment of a fulfilling and healthy sex life. It’s the hot kitchen table topic du jour, but if like you’re like us and a bit confused as to what inflation actually is and how to avoid its impact, read on as Justin Law, a local wealth strategist, cuts through the confusion with straightforward explanations and simple solutions.

Why? As women of any age, we must understand our money, now!

he very word inflation can send people into a tailspin and that’s why I typically avoid using it. In its simplest form, inflation is an increase in the cost of living. From the gas pump to the butcher counter, chances are many of the items you routinely purchase are now more expensive—that’s inflation.

Inflation can cause even the calmest people to unravel. The feeling of lost financial control, the fear of not knowing when the rising costs will stop, and for some, the sheer panic of having to determine what to cut and keep during lean times increases right alongside inflation. And it affects us all.

If you’re not sure how inflation is affecting you and you receive a paycheck, consider what you used to be able to buy and do with that amount. Now, look at what you can currently buy and do with that same amount of money. It’s as if you got a reduction in your paycheck. Unsure? We definitely need to talk! But, simply put, when you have to pay more for goods and services due to inflation that means you’re essentially making less with each paycheck. And, who wants a pay cut?

Perhaps you have some wealth. One of the biggest concerns is that inflation makes it more expensive to access money. Whether it’s your own invested money or if you’re looking to borrow money, it will cost more to do so as interest rates (the fees attached to borrowing money) rise during periods of inflation. Most have noticed mortgage rates are going up fast. You may have concerns about the stock market, too. Ewa Wiggins, an experienced horticulturist, shares tips on the best blooms and bushes to plant now. It’s never too late to plant something. While seasoned gardeners have already finished their spring planting, life can get in the way or maybe you’re new to the joys of gardening and are overwhelmed by all the choices and how to care for what you do choose. That’s where my team and I come in. If you need advice on what to plant in late spring, we’re here for you.

THE WELLNESS WHISPERER Either you or someone you love has been touched by mental illness, but for many it’s not spoken about in public due to outdated beliefs that “it’s a family matter.” While much progress has been made in the arena of talking about mental health, we still have a long road ahead of us. The good news? You’ve got nothing to be ashamed of—and you’re not alone.

Hello, You may or may not know that May is Mental Health Month. So let’s talk stigma. The mental health stigma is rooted in archaic attitudes and beliefs about mental health conditions, people who experience them, the mental health field, and really, the belief that it’s “disordered” to struggle, to be affected, or to be anything else but happy all the time. Today we’re still fighting against this strange perception that everything should be sunshine and rainbows all the time and that it’s disordered to experience anything else besides happiness; that anger, sadness, and anxiety are inherently bad and if you experience them, there’s something wrong with you. And the mental health stigma which is that if you struggle with a mental health condition, if you take medication, or if you go to therapy and do things to help yourself and manage it, there’s something wrong with you.

Well, news flash: you’re not broken; you’re human. Oh, and everyone, regardless of if they admit it or not, has problems. They, too are imperfect and they likely experience some of the very same things you do from time to time. They feel, as you do. We are all human and that’s the nature of the human condition and experience. Feeling is a normal and beautiful thing—whether that feeling be happiness, anger, anxiety, excitement, sadness, disgust, joy, grief, pleasure, pain, or any of the other flavors of humanity. All of those feelings are products of conscious and subconscious commands sent from your brain through your nervous system, which controls the rest of your body in its entirety.

And what controls your brain? Oh, you.

In the short term, what might benefit you most is to “be kind to your mind,” even when that means going against your subconscious conditioning to do the opposite because “that’s how you were raised” and instead make some reasonable efforts to address and care for your mental and physical health. That means asking for help sometimes, going to therapy, being mindful of how you speak to and about yourself when no one is looking, taking whatever medication your body requires, moving your body, eating a balanced diet that supports any existing health conditions you have, spending time with whoever you love and doing some things that bring you some joy and stimulation. Make decisions that benefit you and your health—mental and physical. It all starts with taking one small step toward what you need most and you can do it, if you want to. It does take effort and consistency, but it’s worth it. You’ll be doing your part to reduce the mental health stigma by taking care of yourself and you’ll also be setting an example about this to others. When these changes inevitably draw the attention of your loved ones, tell them why you’re doing these things, the progress you’ve noticed, and encourage them to join you!

In the larger picture, some of that mental health stigma just might go away if we as a society stopped putting so much pressure on ourselves and everyone else to be perfect and to be happy all the time. It’s not realistic and it’s not sustainable. It’s not human. It’s fake. Let’s work on forming realistic and reasonable expectations for ourselves and for our kids and not freaking out when you or anyone else experiences anything else but happiness. It’s okay to feel. It’s okay to not be okay. It’s okay to be human and to embrace the full spectrum of experience. Let’s work together at accepting and embracing our humanity and our life’s journey, rather than villainizing it. That would be the kind thing to do.

In a perfect world, we’d all set aside one night every week to go out and reconnect with our partner. Alas, it can be hard to schedule time alone between jobs, children, and that mountain of laundry that won’t wash itself. But don’t we all deserve a date night now and again? Matt Lemond, owner of downtown hot spot Post Crafted Cocktails & Wine Bar, gives the floor to Manager Tyler Sayer for his recommendations—think of it as an evening itinerary if, like us, it’s been far too long since you got dressed up and hit the town holding hands. Knowing you’re in his capable hands, sit back and revel in the fine food, drink, and company. The laundry can wait.

A few housekeeping matters before you leave, please. Get ready for a great date night at Post! Although it’s not required, why not dress up?

Wear that glamorous outfit you were saving for a special occasion. Guys, maybe level up from a polo and khakis. Accessorize. You get my point, which is to let each other know you’re making an effort to look your best for them. Plus, donning evening attire might remind you of when you first started dating and you wouldn’t dream of wearing any old thing when you had dinner plans.

Upon your arrival at Post, take a moment to savor the ambiance of soft lighting, music playing, and the aroma of fresh mint and lavender from the bar top. Note the spectacular service you receive from our highly trained servers and mixologists. As you settle into your seats, start with an aperitif, which serves to open the palate and stimulate your appetite.

I highly recommend ordering a Without a Paddle, an original Post-crafted cocktail—it’s the Mobile version of a Manhattan, made with Knob Creek bourbon, sweet vermouth, orange bitters, honey syrup, cherry syrup, and garnished with a beautiful Luxardo cherry. For the purists, a classic martini made with your choice of vodka or gin is a great (and classic) option.

While you’re sipping your handcrafted cocktails, take a peek at our menu, which is full of sharable plates, so why not have a bit of everything? Start with our charcuterie and cheese board, with your choice of both meats and cheeses. Next up? The star of the show—our blackened seared Ahi tuna, served with wasabi mayo, sweet Thai, and sriracha sauces on a bed of Asian slaw. Add some house-made crab cakes with remoulade sauce. Another? I honestly can’t recommend a better thin-crust pizza than our 504. Loaded with grilled chicken, Cajun alfredo sauce, mushrooms, Conecuh sausage, a Guinness glaze, and buffalo sauce, it’s another hit for our customers.

You’ll need wine to complement all these flavors. I truly believe you should drink what you like (wine snobs be damned). hh, mothers. This relationship seems to lay the foundation for so many important skills. My mother, Linda, suffers from dementia and I’m grateful for the wisdom she shared with me. Interestingly, she now uses those time-tested catch phrases to communicate and keep conversations going. My favorite? “It is what it is.”

It puts everything into perspective, as do the others shared below.

When it comes to life skills, the top contenders are as follows: Read Reader’s Digest cover to cover and you a can converse with anyone. Don’t get into a car with someone who’s been drinking. Don’t bathe during a thunderstorm. Neither a borrower nor a lender be.

Always look your best; you never know who you’re going to meet. Anything that’s worth having is worth working hard for. Put on some lipstick, you’ll feel better.

Good manners will take you further than anything else.

Nothing good happens after midnight.

As for personal care, these time-tested tips reign: Wash your hands! Lay your clothes out the night before. Wash your face every night. Stand up straight. Make sure you have clean underwear on in case you get into an accident. (My all-time fave.) The restroom marked Messieurs is for men and Mesdames is for women.

Curious, Charlotte Kilborn Carey asked friends and family, including her own children, for their favorite “mom-isms” in honor of Mother’s Day. What’s a momism? You know, those classic sayings that relate to clean underwear, lipstick, and money. Here, she shares the oh-sofamiliar feedback that makes us feel warm all over plus her top gifts to give.

Favored relationship quips? Until he says I do, you don’t! You’re single until you have a ring. Know your worth. Never depend on another person’s income; always have your own money. Never settle.

If they truly like you, they’ll make sure you know.

Do they want a girlfriend or a mother? And, when you know, you know.

General philosophies included; Listen to those with nothing to gain or lose by your decision. If you don’t want it on the news, don’t do it. People want to know how much you care, not how much you know. Pretty is as pretty does. You never get a second chance to make a first impression.

Rise above. Don’t let negative people live rent-free in your mind.

Push through. Inch by inch, life’s a cinch. Yard by yard, life is hard.
