PICKLEBALL 8
Milledgeville Living Magazine
A Fun and Stimulating Game for All Ages by Rick Franzman The national pickleball phenomenon that has captured the interest of nearly 5 million participants across the country has also made its way to Milledgeville and Georgia’s lake country. Nurtured to life by long-time friends and Milledgeville natives, Steve and Patsy Franks and Don and Sandra Smith on the badminton court in the Baldwin Park and Recreation Center (BPRC) Gymnasium around 2018, pickleball steadily gained momentum under the couples’ stewardship of invitation and welcoming newcomers to the game.

Extolling the attributes of the fast paced, intricately strategic, but entirely social activity among an ever widening circle of friends, the two couples and their converts appetite for play quickly outgrew the badminton court. The group relocated outdoors to the tennis courts, modifying the dimensions with masking tape to accommodate pickleball play. Soon after, the Covid pandemic struck and in the midst of shutdown, increased interest in safe outdoor activities among many resulted. Pickleball was seen as one of those games that could be safely played while providing the benefits of exercise, social contact and stimulation. Franks notes the confluence of these circumstances as contributing to the explosive growth of the game locally, “pickle ball provides a connection where people could get outdoors in a fun social setting, but stay distanced and get a nice work-out at the same time.” Smith adds that, “the sand-lot feel of just being able to show up and play like kids during a time when so much was restricted is what made it fun and popular.” The sand-lot reference is apt in that the actual genesis of the game occurred in just such a manner. It was a trio of dads living in Washington state in the mid-1960’s who devised the game for their kids in a driveway borrowing elements from 10

tennis, ping pong, volley ball and whiffle ball. The name, however, derives from one of their family’s dog, Pickles, who was repeatedly interrupting play and making off with the ball. The playing surface most resembles a tennis court with reduced dimensions. A 34” high net divides two 20-foot squares of play with a line marking a novolleying zone called the ‘kitchen’ that is marked six feet from the net. Equipment is a perforated plastic ball the size of a baseball, and an oversized table tennis paddle that is 17” high. Scoring imitates volleyball in that points can only be won by the side that is serving. Like all ‘net’ centric games, a point is decided when one side is unable to return the ball over the net into the opponents’ field of play. Games are generally played to 11 points with a 2 point margin of advantage required to win. Also like tennis, the game can be contested as either a singles or doubles match. As the game continued its growth at the BPRC by word of mouth as well as now attracting the attention of passers-by and bicyclists, it received an additional boost with the county decision to upgrade the physical facilities around the tennis courts to accommodate the unique popularity of the game.

Baldwin County Recreation Director Traci Rollins said, “In the 24 years I have been associated with the Department, I have never seen a game or sport take flight like pickleball. It has been amazing to watch the growth and how it has brought together the young and old.” The re-make included four of the tennis courts converted to eight Pickleball courts that received complete resurfacing with bright blue paint, regulation lining and new nets. The remaining four tennis courts were also resurfaced, offering an attractive new option to area tennis players. Sidewalks and drainage were repaired, and seating added in the area of the court complexes. “This has been a case of the county providing what the people want and meeting a specific demand that developed,” County Comissioner Henry Craig remarked about the improved amenity package at the Park. Now the game is played at BPRC seven days a week on the eight refurbished and dedicated courts by scores of players from the area under the umbrella of ‘Milledgeville Pickleball’.

Franks’ group expanded play to Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning in addition to the original Saturday time, all of which are routinely attended by two dozen or more players. Still, that did not satisfy a continuing demand for even more playing time from a younger demographic. While the game’s popularity has been concentrated in the active senior population over most of the past two decades, it is now trending distinctly younger. That fact led to adding Tuesday and Thursday evening sessions for still working people including a group of Baldwin County teachers who are now seeking to take the game to their respective schools and introduce it to an even younger demographic, their students. Brett Boston, who has been playing in the group for a year has hopes of expanding the game’s reach to all range of ages. He says, “Pickleball enhances agility, hand-eye coordination, balance and reflexes without undue stress on the joint areas. Those are characteristics that appeal to all age groups and all levels of skill.”

Franks follows that saying, “We want to emphasize that Milledgeville Pickleball is inclusive and welcoming to everyone who wants to enjoy a healthy, social experience. My joy after playing for a couple of hours is that by the time I get to my truck I forgot if I won or lost my games, but I had a wonderful time with 20 or 30 friends.” Smith adds, “The game is easy to learn and someone here will always take a newcomer under their wing and help them along.”

Lake Sinclair kicked of its season recently with a seminar and tournament while announcing plans to upgrade its facilities later this year. While encouraging all of those growth opportunities, the Franks’ and Smiths’ will always have the pickleball fence door open at BRPC. Always inviting and always welcoming the next newcomer to pickleball. HMLM And while the ‘sand-lot’ recreational and social nature of the regular play days will always be the core of Franks’ Milledgeville Pickleball, the opportunity to compete at tournament level play is also developing. Boston, Smith and another recent recruit to the group, Rich King have recently organized matches with neighboring communities. Boston says, “We hosted a club from Eatonton. We had 12 players on each side, played a fun match for an hour and a half, lost by one point and all went out to eat afterwards and had fun.” King notes as well that, “The inter-club matches are a good way to test your progress as a player and improve. The social and recreational aspects are the foundation of the game as played here, but for folks who develop their skills at a high level and have a taste for competition, club play in a match format is available.” Smith also notes that tournaments operating under state and national organizations are becoming more popular for advanced players. “In February, a regional tournament was held in Macon that had 240 players from all over the southeast competing. We had three players from here win gold, silver and bronze medals,” he said. While the activity at the BPRC certainly comprises the largest participation group in the area, it is not alone. Georgia College has established an intra-mural league playing at its West Campus location, and The Club at 20

Moving Baldwin County Forward:
Dr. Noris Price,
Georgia’s Superintendent of the Year
by Dana Lowe
If Dr. Noris Price, Baldwin County School District (BCSD) superintendent, were given a grade for the year 2022, it would be an A+. In December 2021, the Georgia School Superintendents Association announced that Dr. Price was the 2022 Superintendent of the Year for the state of Georgia. She found out a few weeks later that she had been named one of four finalists for the 2022 National Superintendent of the Year, which was announced in February. While Dr. Price didn’t win the national award, she says it was truly an honor to win the state award and represent the Baldwin County School District, Milledgeville, and Georgia at the national level.

“I’m humbled to receive this recognition. This is a tremendous honor to be nominated by our board of education and then selected by a committee of my peers. We are making progress as a school district and working hard to provide all of our students with a premium education that will prepare them for a bright future. I am thankful to have an exemplary school board, dedicated employees, great students, and supportive parents and community members,” Dr. Price stated with gratitude. Part of the nomination process involved BCSD board members submitting a nomination packet highlighting Dr. Price’s accomplishments. Wes Cummings, who was the board

Through public education, any child, regardless of their race, ethnicity, station in life; or socioeconomic status, can become a productive, contributing member of society and achieve the American dream,” Dr. Price says. many of our students were learning remotely for two years. We are assessing the academic needs of students and trying to close the learning gap, and realistically, it could take several years for students to catch up.” Dr. Price continues, “We are also looking at non-academic barriers, which impact the student’s ability to learn. The school environment during COVID was extremely challenging and stressful for our staff and students, and that is why we are continuing to identify resources to support their social-emotional needs.”
An Impressive Past Prior to her appointment as superintendent, Dr. Price served as deputy superintendent of the Clarke County School District, where she helped to develop and implement school and system-wide improvement efforts. She started with the Clarke County School District in 2007 as an associate superintendent for Instructional Services and School Performance. Under her leadership, the district was named the Title I Distinguished District 2010, an honor indicating the school district was number one in the state of Georgia for closing the achievement gap between poor and non-disadvantaged students. 32

Real Estate Update – A View from Top Local Realtors

T
here seems to be a clear consensus among Milledgeville-Baldwin County Realtors how the COVID 19 pandemic and recent developments changed real estate. And according to national news,
it appears there’s little exception throughout the U.S. housing market.
According to the Navica Multiple Listing Service, in 2019, the average Baldwin County and surrounding counties home price was $194,632. The average 2020 price was $219,781 and for 2021 it had increase to $243,992. These figures represent an approximate three-year, 20% average sales price increase.
“Many real estate listings barely make it the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) without a plethora of offers,” says Kimi Clements, ABR, SRS, CRS, GRI, of Coldwell Banker Access Realty. Growing up in Milledgeville, Clements began her real estate career in 1996. She recalled how others to enter this field, however she decided to redirect this advice into a personal challenge. In Clements’ opinion, “You have to get scared to be successful.” Clements has received awards including top listing agent and a multi-million-dollar producer along with other real estate achievement awards. Clements is engaged in and knowledgeable regarding real estate marketplace dynamics and notes, “What goes up, will come down. Real estate will balance out, but not any time soon. The inventory of homes is just not out there, making listings nearly nonexistent. So as the market struggles it affects all of us, buyers, and sellers alike. Although this may be considered an excellent sellers’ market, as listings often are going for much more than their asking price, there is so little out there to purchase when a home a sold.”
According to Clements, real estate is one of the best investments. “People are investing in properties for their homes as well as rentals. Today’s investors are a mix of all ages with more younger people buying than ever before. My customers range from the first-time buyer, vacation home buyers, and anyone who has a real estate need,” says Clements. Clements is married and she and her husband have five children. She partners with her brother, Kyle Cullars, in real estate. Cullars, earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) in architecture & construction management and has worked closely with custom home design and construction. Additionally, Cullars served 20+ years as a Georgia College administrator and retired as Vice President of Auxiliary Services. Cullars who also owns Surcheros, a fresh Mexican restaurant in Milledgeville, is a committed supporter of giving back to the Milledgeville community. As the sibling sales team, Clements and Cullars will continue their contributions to the community. Julia Thomas, Associate Broker at Coldwell Banker Access Realty, explains how the COVID 19 pandemic affected lake sales. “We are moving from a wide selection of property listings to virtually no inventory as of the current date. With certainty, we are experiencing the true meaning of economic supply and

demand responsible for the rise in real estate property prices,” says Thomas. Thomas grew up in Fairburn and Peachtree City and graduated with an associate degree from Georgia Military College. Thomas explains why she chose a real estate career, “My mother, with 22 years in real estate, was most influential in my decision. Mother encouraged me to obtain a real estate license and mentored me in new construction as she worked with a builder. I am blessed to have been mentored by Bill Craig of the former Craig-Massee Real Estate co-owner,” expresses Thomas. Thomas has worked in real estate full-time for twenty years. She has received numerous awards over the years including the International President’s Elite List award, Diamond Club award, Sterling award, multi-million-dollar producer award, Circle of Excellence award and the Top Agent award. Thomas partners with her husband, Russ Creecy as a real estate team. Creecy, a graduate of Georgia Tech, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering along with a real estate license. In review of current housing prices, Thomas notes, “I don’t see lake property prices coming down much in the future, however we may be reaching a plateau. Regarding in town residential properties, there may or may not see a reduction in real estate prices. The release of foreclosures that have been on hold for two years will also affect the real estate market. Additionally, the rise in interest rates will change the marketplace landscape.” “Milledgeville-Baldwin County is part of what is known as the Lake Country. Beautiful Lake Sinclair is in a hot real estate market for both residences and short-term rentals. Investors and parents alike seek out student living that surrounds Georgia College & State University as well as Georgia Military College,” says Lee and Danielle McLemore of Sinclair Reserve Realty. The McLemores co-own Sinclair Reserve Realty with Kyle and Andrew Hitchcock. “We are a local, independently owned business, rooted and invested in Milledgeville-Baldwin County, with over 170 years of combined agent experience. Sinclair Reserve Realty takes a mom-and-pop approach in serving the needs of their clients. We specialize in personalized, customer care-giving quality advice on how to sell and buy their dream homes or other property,” says McLemore. “The real estate market is strong for sellers. As real estate agents, we must cold call more than ever before. A new listing simply does not last long. In 2019, our real estate firm had 198 listings at a time. Today by sharp contrast, we may average only 20 listings at one time,” notes Lee McLemore. “We are hoping 40

the new construction increase in town and at the lake will change this trend.” McLemore recounts how the pandemic increased lake activity, “During the COVID 19 pandemic, we experienced an increase of families moving to the lake for entertainment and more importantly to escape the crowds. When the beaches closed, the lake became the vacation spot for many people. Lake sales are driven by retirees either moving to the lake or moving off the lake,” Including Milledgeville’s popular downtown, McLemore adds, “The beautiful downtown Milledgeville is nestled between the two colleges and offers great food, shopping and entertainment. In addition to the downtown area, The Club at Lake Sinclair and Lake Sinclair make Milledgeville an attraction for the real estate market.”

Real estate broker, Tammy Lankford, owner of Lane Realty since 1995 who specializes in Lake Sinclair properties anticipates, “For the remainder of 2022, we will have more of the same, thin inventory and an increased price per square foot. Higher interest rates and inflation will slow price increases to some extent; however, as long as inventory remains thin prices will continue to increase.” Covering the topic of lake building, Lankford asserts, ‘’There is contract building going on whereby individuals are hiring contractors to custom build. Not much however is happening in the way of spec building as in the last boom. Builders were 2 - 3 homes in the building process and buyers vanished. Many builders lost homes because of the 2008 crisis. Builders aren’t in this position presently. They are only building homes when they have a contract in place.” “My experience in real estate tells me it is highly unlikely that we will suffer from another financial crash, as we do not have huge employers that residents depend on for their source of income,” notes Lankford. Valerie Wilson with more than ten years’ experience as property manager for Skywater Realty in Milledgeville and Athens says, “ We have 300 properties here in Milledgeville and are totally booked. Due to the shortage of rentals and demand, prices have been going up. This makes it is a tough market for tenants. Uncertainties in the market economy and shortages aren’t changing and I certainly don’t see it coming down anytime soon. If more rentals were available people would have opportunities to have better choices.”

Deep Roots Company:
Baldwin County Youth Services
I
n October 2020, after serving a two-month tour as a front-line nurse, during the COVID 19 pandemic crisis in New York City, Arlene Simmons, returned home to open a youth development center in Milledgeville. As a Baldwin County High School graduate, Simmons came home with new perspective after experiencing the pandemic firsthand. “Upon arriving at a New York hospital, it looked like a scene from a movie; it was surreal. What was once a well-maintained facility seemed to be a war zone overwhelmed with chaos. The hallways, waiting rooms, and floors were filled with patients, and many were dying. Procedures and protocols weren’t properly followed, and, in most cases, nurses had not been given any orientation or direction to fulfill their roles. In addition, there simply was no time to our wash hands the recommended number of times per day. Medical equipment was recycled for multiple patients at a time. The numbers of patients that needed respiratory care was astounding. Simply put, there was not enough available medical equipment,” explains Simmons.

With few to no breaks or lunches, working seventeen days, fourteen hours plus per day, the work situation brought a time of uncertainty for Simmons. Soon, days turned into nights and nights into days. Simmons lost her sense of time and felt fatigued and numb. “Driving to work each morning was a challenging task as the odors were fetid and the disease was barbarically ravishing patients’ bodies. The setting was something I had never seen or imaged,” says Simmons. After two months, the hospital asked Simmons to extend her assignment. “As I looked around, realizing that the COVID 19 pandemic was as fierce as ever, and my grandchild had entered this world, I decided to terminate my stay,” states Simmons. As a mother of three children, whom Simmons loves dearly, she knew it was time to return home to her children. “I had gained a new perspective on life, no longer wanting to do the same things that I did before the pandemic. Feeling a heightened sense of purpose, I knew I had to commit to something meaningful. It was at this time, I envisioned creating a youth center to serve youth ages two-years to twenty-four years in my hometown of Milledgeville,” says Simmons. “After secur-
ing a 6,000 square foot building, I hired contractors to renovate the space. I was immediately at peace with my plan. It served as a source of therapy to do something I genuinely wanted to do,” explains Simmons. “After the Baldwin County Youth Services (BCYS) grand opening, my story went viral, and captured national attention. I began interviewing with numerous talk show hosts, such as Kelly Clarkson, Nick Cannon; media including newspapers and magazines, college students, and more. I was offered a part in a book via Fox News in New York City which will be coming out in the spring of this year,” Simmons proudly notes. BCYS was created with a purpose to empower and support youth and their families within the community and to help them discover, embrace, and achieve their full potential. BCYS achieves this mission by providing a state-based learning curriculum and focuses on skill development, academic achievement, and support groups.

The facility serves youth year-round with innovative, in-school and after school academic support programs which provide a vibrant, social, and safe community. BCYS is a fun filled atmosphere and is equipped with space to accommodate up to 100 children. Weekdays, BCYS offers full day childcare for children ages 18 months to 5 years of age. Each age group has a full day curriculum instructed by a Child Development Associate (CDA) certified staff member. Hot meals which meet USDA menu recommendations are served daily. The community garden shares fresh fruits and vegetables for students at the center. Outdoor play and exploration are also encouraged throughout the day. On Monday evenings, the center engages participants with complementary music and voice lessons with professional music instructors. This program is available for youth ages 4 years to 17 years and up to 30 children may attend each session.
Arlene Simmons, a mother, nurse, pilot, philanthropist, and entrepreneur, was born and raised in Milledgeville and is one of nine siblings. Simmons who grew up in a household that experienced financial challenge; however, through consistent involvement in church, Simmons acquired a humble and kind spirit. Simmons was an accomplished dance choreographer in earlier years and landed shows with celebrity clients. Simmons earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Macon State College and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Healthcare Administration from Samford University and during her 20-year nursing career she enjoyed record breaking achievements including her heroic contribution during the 2020 COVID 19 Pandemic in

New York City. According to Simmons, she is the first African American female pilot of Milledgeville-Baldwin County, plans to serve the underprivileged youth in the community with an introduction to aviation. Simmons supports numerous charities, businesses, and organizations and has helped raise annual donations for The American Red Cross, Hosea Feed the Hungry, Georgia Nurses Foundation, Zeta Phi Beta, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, REACH Georgia, and various small businesses in Milledgeville and Middle Georgia. Simmons adds, “I believe there is a calling in my life, and I will continue to stay faithful to it. I have had mountains to climb but that’s okay because that’s what makes me humble and keeps me strong.”

Each quarter, for youth ages 16 years to 17 years, BCYS provides an extensive six-week Job Readiness Program. The program, held on the third Saturday of the month accommodates up to 30 individuals. Each week, participants are enrolled in new training seminars. Subjects include, learning about financial literacy, resume preparation, interviewing techniques and etiquette, law enforcement interaction, self-defense classes, beginning cooking and sewing skills. Additionally, a free credit repair analysis is offered to parents after completing a six-week program.
BCYS provides weekend space for support groups. Currently an autism support group meets on the first Saturday of each month and a foster care support group meets on the second Saturday monthly. Additionally, BCYS sponsors community events including drive-in movies, Easter egg hunts, fundraisers, Christmas toy drives and much more. BCYS brings the community together with love, laughter and most importantly with purpose. BCYS offers job opportunities and welcomes volunteers. Arousing Admiration: The Charm of Hummingbirds
T
he charm of hummingbirds is most certainly apropos and “a charm” of hummingbirds is
factual. That’s right, the collective noun for these unique creatures – just like a gaggle of geese or a flock of birds, is a charm of hummingbirds. Since the definition of the noun ‘charm’ is “the power of giving delight or arousing admiration,” one doesn’t need to be a wordsmith to see how right that is. Hummingbirds are charming. And there are over 330 varieties of the species, Trochilidae, which is their biological family name and they’re found in the Western Hemisphere. When one sees a hummingbird, it’s a stunning, stop-in-your-tracks sight. Their brilliant throat color is a result of the iridescence in the arrangement of their feathers, not color pigment. Light level, moisture, angle of viewing, and other factors influence just how bright and colorful their throats may appear. Spring-Summer 2022
55
Perhaps you’ve heard them, too – the name hummingbird comes from the buzzing sound of their fastflapping wings. Hummers are migrant birds, so although many stay close to the Equator, lots of varieties travel this time of year, so there may be a ‘charm’ coming to your backyard soon. If you have the desire to see one up close or are curious about how to attract them to your yard, the folks at Cole’s Wild Bird Feed Co have got you covered. First, they figured out the engineering of an elegant, deceptively simple, easy-to-use (and easy-to-clean!) feeder. The patented Hummer High Rise has a clever design that offers a stress-free position for your charming guests to get their fill, a fantastic 360-degree vista, all the while keeping other unwanted creatures at bay. For example, there’s an ant moat that stops the armies of industrious workers who’d love to get some sweet nectar, from beating a path to the liquid food. The genius is, it’s an actual moat, with nothing but H2O keeping the ants at bay, so while it does its job, it doesn’t do harm. Nice! A charm magnet.
The second definition for the noun ‘charm’ is a small ornament worn on a necklace or bracelet. Hummingbirds weigh on average the same as a nickel, so while you’ll want to wear a replica from the jewelers, Hummers can be your own garden’s jewelry all season long. And in return for their arousing your admiration, they’ll feed on those annoying garden insects and pests. For their small size, hummers eat a lot. They are voracious eaters, feeding on mosquitos, gnats, spiders, aphids, and other six-legged creepy crawlers. But, besides pests for protein,
Hummingbird Fascinating Facts 1. There are 360+ hummingbird species. 15 species in the U.S. others occasionally dwell north of the Mexico U.S. border. Most live in tropical climates and in South America. 2. Hummingbirds remember where they’ve been. Hummingbirds enjoy incredible recall abilities and remember feeder locations years later. They also remember bloom peaks and flowers they’ve visited. This is due to large portion of a hummingbird’s brain served by the hippocampus, an area dedicated to learning and spatial memory. 3. Hummingbirds visit vast numbers of flowers each day. Hummingbirds need vast food sources. To maintain their high metabolism, they feed continuously throughout the day. The Ruby-throated Hummingbird, for example, may feed on1,000+ flowers per day. Flowers are their primary food source, but hummingbirds also enhance many other plants because they are significant in pollination. 4. The smallest bird in the world is a hummingbird…and it weighs less than a dime. The aptly named Bee Hummingbird, endemic to Cuba, is only about 2 inches long and weighs approximately 1.6 grams. Others weigh more. 5. New hummingbird species are being discovered. The Blue-throated Hillstar was discovered in 2017. Other species have remained without notice for many years. 6. Hummingbirds have a rapid heartbeat. The Blue-throated Mountain-gem’s heart beats as fast as 1,260 beats per minute. Costa’s Hummingbird’s beats between 500 and 900 times. The
56
Milledgeville Living Magazine
human average heart rate is approximately 60 to 100 beats per minute. Amazingly, some hummingbirds can reduce their heart rate to 50 beats per minute as the strive to conserve energy and survive cold temperatures. 7. Most hummingbirds flap their wings 60 to 80 times per second. The name hummingbird is derived from the humming sound their wings make as they fly. They are equipped with shoulder joints that allow their wings to rotate 180 degrees, enabling them to fly backward and engage in stationary hovering. 8. Hummingbirds can’t walk. Hummingbirds either perch or scurry sideways. Hummingbirds are classified as Apodiformes (“footless). Small feet with both swifts and hummingbirds increase their aerodynamics in flight. 9. Hummingbirds travel long-distance migration flights. The Calliope Hummingbird travels more than 5,000 miles each year. The Rufous Hummingbird also travels on 3,900-mile-long journey. Hummingbirds fly fast: The Ruby-throated Hummingbird flies nonstop 500-miles across the Gulf of Mexico in less than one day. 10. Hummingbirds existed in Europe 30 million years ago but not today. Today, hummingbirds are exclusive to the Americas, but that was not always the case. The oldest hummingbird fossil was discovered in Germany in 2004. Scientists have yet to explain why hummingbirds disappeared from Europe. Provided by the American Bird Conservancy, author Erica Sánchez Vázquez
saintly appearance, they feed on our fascinating feathered friends and are a real threat (and a protected species), so if you find a mantis hanging around your outdoor space, take care to evict it gently, to a distant piece of your lawn real estate and keep hummers safe. (NewsUSA) HMLM
their primary ‘food group’ is nectar, which they get in by flitting from flower to flower and using their long beaks and equally long tongues to get their fill. All that flitting is exhausting! Since hummingbirds drink up to half their body weight a day of nectar you can help them out by keeping your feeders fully stocked, for a one-stop fill of their favorite nectar treat. Let’s not leave out the definition of the verb, “charm,” which is to “delight greatly.” If you want these Disney-esque caricatures to delight you on a regular basis with their wonder – and bring their distinctive song to your yard – there is something you can buy: the creme-de la creme of what these charmers crave: Nature’s Garden from Cole’s.by identifying and harnessing the nutrients of the hummer’s favorite wildflowers, and tapping their vast store of wild bird knowhow, Cole’s has created the next-best-thing to actual flower nectar – a proprietary formula that’s far and away a cut above your ‘garden-variety’ sugar water. Nature’s Garden is a healthy, all-natural alternative to homemade syrup, no mixing and no boiling required. It comes in an eco-friendly soft pouch; just shake and pour. You’ll be delighted with how easy it is to keep your hummer feeder filled and overjoyed at seeing hummers frequent your yard. Your neighborhood hummingbirds will love it, so they’ll keep coming back. A brief postscript: a natural predator to the hummingbird is the praying mantis. Despite their equally small size and Spring-Summer 2022
