ur pets make us laugh at the crazy things they do or get into in our homes. It’s hard not to chuckle when the cat unrolls the toilet paper or our dog shreds the newspaper on the living room floor. However, there can also be moments of sheer terror when they get into products that may be poisonous.

Most pet owners are aware of the more common poisons like rat bait, dark chocolate and anti-freeze. This article will bring attention to some less obvious toxicities that are found in our homes and outdoor spaces. Trouble lurks in some seemingly harmless places.

Fresh, home-cooked bread is a delicious treat for the family, but uncooked dough can be lethal to our dogs. When a dog ingests raw dough the yeast will continue to allow the dough to rise expanding the contents of the stomach to a size that cannot be regurgitated.

This may result in a life-threatening medical crisis if the dog does not receive emergency surgery. Allowing the dough to rise safely in the microwave will keep trouble away from counter-surfing pooches.

Scientists are unclear why macadamia nuts and raisins are sometimes poisonous to dogs, but safe for people to eat in large amounts. These foods can trigger lethal organ damage to dogs and under no circumstances should be left out or fed to pets.

Another scary food product that should never be left out to tempt four-legged guys is sugar-free gum. Specifically gum with the sweetener xylitol can cause a dramatic drop in blood sugar levels, seizures and death. Even a few sticks of this type gum can cause big trouble. However, gum with sorbitol is not toxic but in general we should not let our pets chew gum.

Cats are particularly interested in string and lily plants. Ingested string or thread can cause life-threatening intestinal damage while ingested lily leaves can trigger kidney failure. We as cat owners have the responsibility to protect our pets: out of sight, out of mind.

I have occasionally treated cats that have knocked over containers of potpourri oil when they jump up on the counter. If the oil is stepped on by the kitty he will clean himself. The oil will cause a painful chemical burn to the tongue requiring care at the veterinary hospital.

When houseguests come to stay politely remind them to keep any prescription medication safety stored away. Our pets are curious creatures and are likely to check out the belongings of our guests. A few pills can cause serious medical problems resulting in an expensive trip to the emergency clinic and a ruined visit.

Obviously we should keep pesticides, fertilizers and weed killer away from animals and children. These products should always be used as directed, never allowing contact with the skin or any ingestion. Less obvious are the materials we may put in our compost piles outdoors. Never attempt to compost meat, fat or grease.

The smells are too tempting to a dog and if ingested can trigger a serious form of food poisoning. Fencing off the compost pile is a better idea to keep them completely out.

If mushrooms appear in the yard, the safest course of action is to knock them off and dispose of them in the trash. Certain species of mushrooms are highly toxic causing a wide range of symptoms including death.

If your pet unexpectedly eats something unusual it is best to immediately call your veterinary hospital, animal emergency clinic or pet poison center hotline. Better still, be aware of trouble before it happens and protect your four-legged friends from temptations by pet-proofing your home and property.

ob Rohan, or as he is known in Texas “Bad Bob”, has been playing the fiddle and singing in various groups for over 30 years in Texas, and has opened for Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Charlie Daniels, Carlene Carter and John Conley to name a few.

Bob has played in bands that have backed up country legends like Hank Thompson, Ray Price, Jack Greene, Pam Tillis, and Dale Watson.

Along with songwriting, Bob is also a talented cartoonist and has a self syndicated comic strip titled “Buffalo Gals”.

The comic feature is about two cowgirls “Bess Winchester” and “Connie Cheyenne”. Bob has won The Wisconsin State Fiddle Championship and has been nominated several times from The Academy of Western Artists for Best Cowboy Cartoonist.

Compost Tea

“For Blooms And Veggies Galore, All You Need Is Compost Tea.”

I

f I had to pick one thing that was essential for a good garden, aside from the soil, it would be compost tea. Compost tea is a liquid fertilizer, mild insect repellent, and a mild fungicide. The ease of application and production makes this potion hard to beat.

I use a 5-gallon bucket. In the bottom of the bucket dump about 3 inches of almost finished or finished compost. If you don’t have a compost pile, you can buy compost at any nursery. Fill the bucket with water and put the lid on. Steep the tea for 1-2 weeks. Strain off the liquid and discard the used compost into the garden.

This is the basic recipe for compost tea.

Once the tea is made it can be applied in several different ways. You can simply dip it out of the bucket and pour it over the plants with a watering can. My favorite way is to strain the tea through a screen- an actual window screen works fine- and put it in a pump sprayer. Eight ounces of tea will dilute into 1 gallon of water. Please remember to dilute the tea, concentrated tea right out of the bucket can burn new growth and seedlings. The 1-gallon sprayer is just right for the job. The fine mist that lands on the leaves is excellent for the plants.

If you want to boost the potency, add a bag of Epsom salt and/or a bottle of beer.

Basically, there is no wrong way to make the tea, so tinker around with it and find what works well for you and your plants. If you google compost tea, you can find complicated recipes and “rules” that must be followed, however, I have been using the above recipe for over a decade with great results. Complicated is not necessarily better.

Attendees at the March 15 concert have the rare opportunity to be the first to experience hearing a new work by Saeverud’s father, Ketil Hvoslef’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Hvoslef is a prolific Norwegian composer and four-time recipient of the Norwegian Society of Composers’ “Work of the Year” award.

Galveston Symphony Orchestra’s 40th anniversary season is going strong with outstanding concerts and special events planned for our Island.

Concerts are Sunday afternoons starting at 4:00 in The Grand 1894 Opera House, 2020 Postoffice Street in the historic downtown district.

February 9: Conductor Trond Saeverud Performs with the Symphony!

Orchestra fans are in for a treat this season as Conductor Saeverud, also an internationally known violinist, will perform Paganini’s Violin Concerto No. 1 as part of the February 9 concert.

Galveston is fortunate to be led by conductor Trond Saeverud who joined the Galveston Symphony Orchestra in 2013 after conducting in Denmark, Norway, and the United States.

T

his past month was one for the record books! On January 11, I fished the 2020 POC Freeze Out Tournament benefitting Port O’Connor Elementary School. With my team; Gerald Schneider and Brandon Traw, we captured 2nd place combined stringer and 3rd place trout stringer. However, with a 7.46lb trout, I finished FIRST among the 59 teams entered.

This 29” beauty was a personal best for me and the payout was SWEET. We drew boat #28 and left out in the middle of a crowded pack.

We worked the shorelines, catching decent redfish, but could only add a 5.5lb red to the stringer. The trout continued to be elusive, only dinks, until shortly before running out of time. That’s when I landed the massive trout. Brandon finally snagged a 6.5lb redfish and we were confident now as we headed to weigh-in with a 20lb plus stringer. You can’t imagine my excitement as I raised the massive trout from the bag, and everyone was gasping! Huge shout out to the local businesses and sponsors for this tournament. I’ve fished a lot of tournaments and none were more professional and organized that the POC Freeze Out. The trophies were nice, and the payouts were huge!

NON-SLIP LOOP KNOT

he loop knot is another of those simple rigging methods that have been around for many years. It is not only simple, but it works well in a variety of tying methods and the cost is zero — sounds pretty good to me.

When a mono knot is tied tightly against a hook, jig or plug’s attachment eye, the stiffness of the mono will definitely restrict the movement somewhat of whichever of them is behind it. This stiffness will vary by manufacturer, type and size of the mono. Some loop knots are designed to snug up tightly against the eye when the line comes tight. . . something about that bothers me. I want my loop knot to stay a loop, slip bothers me, again. A couple of those which are designed to slip and tighten against the eye are the Uni and the Two-Wrap Hangman’s Knot. Some of those that don’t slip are Homer’s knot, the Perfection Loop, the Rapala Knot and the Non-Slip Loop Knot.

A loop knot at the hook’s eye gives the same benefits as a much more expensive hook with a welded or solid metal ring in its eye. The added motion the loop knot allows lets you impart the motion desired to your presentation with less effort on your part. The current adds to it also, that’s a more natural look, again for free.

Whatever you’re tied to, its movement will naturally increase. This greater range of motion gives your presentation a more lifelike, natural look.

Tying up this particular non-slip loop knot in your 40-100 lb. mono main line or leader goes like this: Tie an overhand knot 8-10” from the end of your mono line/ leader. Now, pass the end of the leader through the hook, jig or plug’s leader attachment eye, then back through the overhand knot as shown at “A” on the illustration. Pull the leader’s end through the overhand loop far enough to get the approximate size of the mono eye at the attachment eye you desire. Next, wrap the mono’s tag end 3-4 times around the leader then headed back through the overhand knot, as at the illustration’s “B”; use 2-3 turns with 100 to 80 lb. mono. The third part of the illustration, “C”, shows the tag end of the leader passed through the overhand knot. After moistening with saliva, pull on the tag end to snug the turns around the main line/leader. Now pull on the main line and hook to complete the tightening of this non-slip mono loop knot. During this tying and tightening procedure, keep a couple of things in mind. First, use a tight, secure grip at all times for safety, since there is a sharp hook involved that doesn’t have a brain — you have to supply that. Second, make adjustments as necessary throughout this process to keep the mono loop the size you are looking for. At the bottom of the illustration is the completed look of this non-slip loop knot after the tag end is cut off to about 1/8” length.

bait presentation a better chance of being eaten by your targeted predator.

See the added motion that this non-slip loop knot allows your bait to have by looking at it about 3-4 feet below the surface of the water at boat side. Let the boat’s rocking, or a rod tip twitch set it in motion and you’ll see the plus that this loop knot brings. A true “see test” would be to tie up separate rigs, one with the mono knot tight at the “eye”, one with the “loop” connection, but that would be going to the extreme. If the benefits already mentioned aren’t obvious, just believe me, they are definitely there.

There is an old saying, “Better is the enemy of good enough”. While that’s true many times, using the Non-Slip Loop Knot for your mono connection to a hook, plug or jig eye goes against that line of thought. a baited hook, that added natural “swim” effect applies to strip baits as well as whole, dead or live baitfish. Don’t forget to occasionally give your bait an “alive but in trouble” movement with a sharp but small twitch of your rod tip.

Pork spare ribs | 1 whole rack Lone star beer | 1 bottle Course sea salt | ¼ cup Brown sugar | ¾ cup White sugar | ½ cup Soy sauce | 1/3 cup White vinegar | 1/8 cup Molasses | 1 tbsp Honey | 1 tbsp Fresh chili pequin | 2 tbsp chopped Fresh garlic | 4 cloves sliced thin Pineapple juice | ¼ cup Duck fat spray TSS the Juicy Pig TSS Pequin Garlic Salt

Directions In Texas, we love our cold Lone Star beer and a spicy rack of smoked pork ribs! I grew up in south Texas harvesting wild chili pequins so you will see them used in many of my recipes, but if you can’t find them use any fresh spicy red peppers like Thai varieties or dry red pepper flakes to taste.

I like to smoke the whole rack of spare ribs and only cut off the breastbone plus trim the ends to have straight lines. Do NOT remove the membrane. It holds moisture in while smoking and being marinated its not necessary to add rub on the bone side.

Combine all ingredients, add rack or ribs to 3-gallon plastic zipper bag and pour ingredients over the top. Remove air and seal then place in fridge with meat face down in the marinade overnight. Fire the smoker up to 275 degrees and after removing ribs from marinade, spray meat side with duck fat spray and add a light coat of TSS Texas Pequin garlic Salt then a heavier coat of TSS the Juicy Pig BBQ rub and set for 15 minutes.

Around 190 degrees internal, lay a piece of non-stick foil on top of the rack to protect from getting too dark or leave off if a darker look is desired. Smoke until 200-205 degrees internal when a probe easily goes in and out of the thickest areas. Rest for 20 minutes, cut and enjoy with a cold Lone Star beer!

The food of Mardi Gras is by far a favorite part of the celebration. The sweets and treats will be plentiful at all of the local favorites, including LaKing’s Confectionary, 2323 Strand Street, with their exclusively hand-made Mardi Gras saltwater taffy and King Cake Fudge and Gypsy Joynt at, 2711 Market Street, with their flavored King Cakes and one of a kind Mardi Gras coffee drinks with the baby on top.

Traveling back to the roots of Mardi Gras on the island and honoring the man who brought so much to the island, the Knights of Momus float will have three busts of George Mitchell which were designed and painted by local artist, Derek Anderson.

I don’t know about you, but these are two that popped into my head – meatloaf and macaroni and cheese!! The meatloaf is a recipe from Mr. Bunny’s mother. The mac and cheese is a unique one from a friend of mine. You cook it in a crock pot!

The ingredients in it are a little weird, but it is so good. So get your loaf pan and crock pot out and let’s start cookin’.

Mamma’s Meat Loaf Ingredients • 2 pounds lean ground beef • 2 slices of bread, torn in tiny pieces (I crush saltines sometimes) • 1 egg • 2 tablespoons instant/ minced onions • 2/3 cup milk • ¼ cup catsup (that’s how she spelled it folks) • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning • 1 teaspoon each of salt and pepper (I use a little bit more)

Directions Mix all ingredients thoroughly with hands, and form into a loaf. Place in loaf pan and cut slits in top. Spread catsup on top of slits. Bake 1 ½ hours at 350 degrees or 1 hour at 400 degrees. Be sure to measure correctly. It makes a big difference. And did you notice…..no chopping of anything!

Missy’s Crock Pot Macaroni and Cheese Ingredients • • • • • • • •

2 cups elbow macaroni 1 teaspoon onion powder ½ teaspoon dry mustard 1 can of cream of chicken soup ½ cup sour cream ½ cup mayonnaise ½ teaspoon pepper 3 cups cheddar cheese 1 cup gruyere cheese (you can find this in your deli at the grocery store)

Directions Cook macaroni for about 5-6 minutes and drain (you don’t what to overcook). Combine all the ingredients. Pour in your crock pot and cook on high for 3 hours – stirring a couple of times. All crock pots are different, so it might need a little longer to cook.

This should keep your tummy happy for a while.

Your Bum got a terrific response from you regarding January’s Favorite All-Time Television Characters article. An idea came to me while I was out running around in my ol’ scarab the other day. It’s not like me to have very many thoughts in a day, but here is what had me thinking.

Since the All-Time Television Characters received such a wonderful response, how about listing my Favorite All-Time Television Theme Songs? Here is my list. I am sure you have many favorites too. Let’s see how many we match:

Cheers | 1982 – 1993 | “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” By Gary Pertnoy and Judy Hart Angelo. One of your Bum’s personal favorites. It received an Emmy nomination in 1983. It’s generally considered among the best TV show theme songs throughout the history of the medium.

The Golden Girls | 1985-1992 | “Thank You for Being A Friend” By Andrew Gold. Performed by Cynthia Fee. One for my lady friends. Though most people associate this song with the TV series, Gold’s original recording of “Thank You for Being A Friend” hit #25 on the Hot 100 list in 1978.

Hawaii Five-O | 1968-1980 - 2010 to Present | By Morton Stevens.

Awesome enough to be used again for the series remake years later (the original was re-recorded with some of the same musicians). Hawaii Five-O is one of the all-time greats.

The Andy Griffith Show | 1960-1968 | “The Fishin’ Hole” By Earle Hagen, Hebert Spencer, and Everett Sloan. One of the most memorable themes ever is one of the simplest. Largely whistled (by Hagen). Actual musical instruments don’t come in until about halfway through the 30-second theme.

Mission: Impossible | 1966-1973, 1988-1990 | By Lalo Schifrin. Two TV series, six movies (and counting) - Mission: Impossible is one of the golden standards for theme music.

The Jeffersons | 1975-1985 | “Movin’ On Up” By Jeff Barry and Ja’net Dubois. Performed by Dubois. The theme charts the Jefferson’s move from their old neighborhood to their new high-rise thanks to the success of George’s dry-cleaning chain. Musical side note: the late regular Roxie Roker (Helen Willis) is the mother of rock star Lenny Kravitz.

The Addams Family | 1964-1966 | By Vic Mizzy. A piece that’s destined to live forever on Halloween compilations, The Addams Family theme contains the most famous double-snaps of all time.

M*A*S*H* | 1972-1983 | “Suicide Is Painless” by Johnny Mandel with lyrics by Mike Altman. This TV series spun out of the successful 1970 film

by Robert Altman; the movie featured a version of Suicide Is Painless with lyrics. The lyrics were written by the director’s son, who was only 14 at the time.

The Beverly Hillbillies | 1962-1971 | “The Ballad of Jed Clampett” By Paul Henning. Vocals by Jerry Scoggins. Instrumentals by Flatt & Scruggs. This is one your Bum loves to sing from start to finish. The song spent 20 weeks on the Billboard country singles charts, scoring a Number One Hit for three weeks in 1962.

Peter Gunn | 1958-1961 | By Henry Mancini. Instantly recognizable, this Peter Gunn theme song brought Henry Mancini an Emmy and two Grammy’s, including album of the year in 1959.

But with this promotion, she has to go to all these galas, social events, openings, etc., and they expect the spouses to attend most of these as well. I’m very much an introvert, do not do well with small talk, smiling at some politician I don’t even know, plus I hate to dress up. (I do dress nicely, but I’m not a suit and tie type of guy). She has dragged me to so many of these, I can’t stand it anymore. How can I tell her I have had enough? ~Ira the Introvert.

You also state that your wife’s company expects the spouses to attend their events. I think if you want your wife to prosper in her new position, you should try to be supportive. It won’t hurt you one bit to lay down your television remote and get off the couch once in a while.

ell Ira, I’m sure you have told her over and over how proud you are of her (I hope), and that she knows you are an introvert and don’t like socializing (I hope), so here are a couple of things that might help. Compromise with her. Pick a few that you might feel half way comfortable going to and go. The rest, bow out. I’m sure a few other spouses don’t go to all of them. You never said if you work, but I assume you do. Get very busy at work!!! Work overtime. Don’t make yourself available all of the time. As for dressing up??

Men have it easy. You can wear the same suit, just change the tie. You can do it!

Man up, Ira. Be supportive of your wife. Appreciate the fact that you have a woman that is successful in her profession.

One thing you didn’t elaborate on is how does your wife feel about all of this? Does she really care if you are there or not? My feeling is, that since you haven’t had the backbone to tell her that you don’t want to go to these company functions, that you know she really does want you going with her.

ong a fixture in Galveston’s downtown Post Office Street entertainment and art district, the locally owned Mod continues to be a destination for relaxation and refreshment. Strategically located in a historic building in the middle of all the action, the Mod is a perfect oasis for a casual refreshment and a break from shopping.

Located at the corner of 22nd Street and Post Office, as you enter you pass through a bright seating area and proceed to the ordering counter in the rear. There, a cheerful barrister will take your order and prepare your drink. Homemade scones and other treats are available to augment your beverage order. Choose from an extensive menu of traditional coffees, expressos, cappuccinos, lattes or teas.

A vine-covered trellis that shades the sidewalk seating area is the perfect spot for people watching while enjoying a beverage or snack. Many of my Sunday mornings have been spent reading the newspaper and lounging in this outdoor space.

Finding a seat on a nice day can be a challenge as it is very popular. The Mod is the perfect place to loiter and read a book or catch up on your emails. At least a few tables will be commandeered by students from the nearby UTMB medical school or Texas A&M marine college as they study or complete assignments. If it is too crowded, I simply get my order to go. There are many places downtown to sit and enjoy a drink or snack.

Their specialty lattes are offered in more than a dozen handcrafted flavors. Some, like the Holly with its toffee nut, vanilla, and cinnamon sugar, is a familiar traditional. Others, like their Grasshopper with mocha and green mint, are more exotic. All are delicious and refreshing.

Transitions

One of Galveston’s largest celebrations is our annual Mardi Gras. Many thousands of visitors will jam our restaurants and bars. Early reservations are essential for dining. There are too many parties and events to list. However one common element for most parties is a King Cake. These specially baked cakes are only available for a short couple of weeks. Kroger’s and other supermarkets usually have them but for a really unique experience you should order one from our local bakeries.

Here are some suggestions:

Who doesn’t want to take their sweetheart out for a special meal on this romantic holiday? This year Valentine day overlaps with the first day of Mardi Gras in Galveston so you need to make reservations early if you are dining out. Most area restaurants offer some sort of Valentine special.

Prohibition Reds at 24th Street and Church celebrated a grand re-opening as they transition into more of a music and nightclub venue. Retaining their old world charm, the atmosphere is more English Pub “clubby” with expanded live music and happy hour. Specializing in artisan drinks, they also offer an array of draft and bottled beers and some great deals on mixed drinks. Their new menu is abbreviated and the focus is on lighter fare but some of your old favorites may be available off menu. David and his team have worked hard to make this a neighborhood gathering place and event venue.

Chris Lopez BLVD Seafood on the Seawall

A deep appreciation for fine dining has spawned renowned chefs like the legendary James Beard.

Chef Lopez excelled in this environment and honed his skills. He served as executive chef of Piatti, an upscale Italian restaurant in Seattle, for two years before moving to Portland Oregon where he opened El Gaucho, a fine dining steakhouse.

After several years in the Pacific Northwest, Chef Lopez relocated to Galveston Island. With our abundance of locally caught fresh seafood it was natural for Lopez to assume the position of Executive Chef at locally owned Saltwater Grill - one of Galveston’s top seafood restaurants. Leaving there in October 2005, Chef Lopez opened his own fine dining restaurant M&M in a historic building in downtown Galveston.

That business thrived and won many

acclaims before coming to an abrupt halt when hurricane Ike sent several feet of water into the building.

Picking up the pieces after the devastation of Ike, Chris joined the family at Yagas Cafe. As executive chef at Yagas, he transformed the dining experience and cuisine and introduced “pairing” menus which have subsequently become very popular.

Over the years he has paired four tequila dinners, three rum dinners and two bourbon and one vodka dinner. He also greatly expanded their catering business to accommodate groups of all sizes.

Lopez is a member of the Chains des Rotisseurs and has designed the menu for the inaugural Chain des Rotisserie dinner at the American National Insurance company headquarters in Galveston as well as several parties hosted by Yagas.

Currently, Chef Lopez is still with the Yagas family and is now the executive chef of BLVD Seafood restaurant on the Seawall. At BLVD his creativity and passion for freshness continue. His innovative menu and commitment to quality has made that restaurant one of Galveston’s most popular and best seafood venues. Stop by and try one of his specials and say hello.

Ronald McDonald House “The Story of Guillermo”

G

uillermo, his Dad and older brother loved riding bikes on the mountain trails near their home in in the foothills of El Salvador’s Balsam Mountain.

Suddenly, a local bus hit Guillermo, knocking him to the pavement, breaking his pelvis and burning the torso and entire mid-section of his body. After spending three months in the National Hospital on his back with little treatment, he was air lifted to Galveston, to the Shrine Hospitals for Children.

Three weeks after a surgery to rebuild his pelvis, Guillermo was walking. A joyful day…however a long extended time would be necessary to heal the wounds and burns from the pavement…over the course of eight years and fifteen surgeries…Soon after his final visit to Galveston this winter, Guillermo will return to his home in El Salvador to continue his pursuit of a degree in psychology at the Central American University. Guillermo says The Ronald McDonald House of Galveston “made my life special and I learned so much… that it is important to be nice, as you never know a person’s situation; to be generous and give back; and that you can do anything despite the difficulties you face”.

I

’ve been fortunate to write for Waves Magazine this past year and have covered many fun topics. We’ve covered Island friends, music, places to go and fun things to do. Other topics on faith and patience were well received. So, a big “thank you” to all our Waves supporters.

I am usually inspired by those around me when we strike up often meaningless conversations. Well, I was walking my dog and it hit me.....

Our Island Pets.

So many of us have pets on the island that we depend on for friendship and comfort. Many of our pets are truly family members. We feed them, bathe them, groom them, we buy them toys and clothing. We take our pets to the doctor when they are sick. We take them on vacation, or we make plans for them while we are gone.

For our older islanders, a pet can be their reason for living. We have islanders who have no family members left or no family in the area and a pet can become the next best thing. At some point we run out of energy to go out to our local bars and pubs. It’s nice to sit at home, cuddle on the couch and watch our favorite TV shows or read a book and right by our side... our cherished pet.

Our pets have personalities. Is your pet hyper or shy; playful or a loner; demanding or aloof; silly or serious; afraid or protective; smart or a little slow. My pet likes people, but not other animals. How about your pet? What kind of personality does he/she have?

As we make our way around the island to our

favorite establishments or travel up and down the Seawall, we see islanders and their pets in all kinds of situations. I’ve seen the jogger with his chihuahua on his shoulder. Countless people walk their dogs on the Seawall, some are actually dressed in sweaters and bows, the dogs not their owner! I’ve seen dogs in strollers or riding in the bike baskets. We think people like to drive in their convertible or jeeps with the wind in their face, but how many of our fury friends love it just the same?

Some establishments have the resident pets that mingle with the patrons and appear to get all the attention.

One thing I often ask myself is do I have my pet trained or has my pet trained me? Think about it, our pets let us know when it’s time for their walk or their ready to eat or if they want a treat, and without thinking we comply. I’m afraid my dog, Brandy, has me trained. Think about it next time you respond to your pet’s “command”. Lol! As we get older, we depend on our pets for companionship.

As with family and friends, if we’ve been blessed to live a long life, we eventually must say goodbye to our pets. Often, it’s as hard to say goodbye to them as it is to family members because they have been loyal and supportive. They have been there to greet you when you come home and pout when you leave. They sense when you are lonely or sad. They comfort you when you’re sick. Saying goodbye is tough, but remember how much joy they gave us while they were here...priceless.

Our pets love us unconditionally and all they want is to be loved.

“A dog is a man’s best friend”. I truly believe that our pets, no matter what yours is, can be your best friend.
