hile we’ve always appreciated both inner and outer beauty when it comes to our annual Beautiful Issue, the pandemic gave us an even deeper and more meaningful understanding of beauty (and this year’s 50 Most Beautiful have it in spades). Coming together for the photo shoot, we were greeted by excited faces that were beyond thrilled to be out and about and celebrating life again. With big hearts, a love for the community, and more, their joy and positive outlook for the future was infectious. Not one took for granted the small pleasure in showing up, mingling, and having a great day. You could literally feel the happiness, and that’s what ACCESS is all about. Each and every participant is so deserving of this recognition and we hope their stories ignite your community spirit as well. Stretching beyond the pages of ACCESS, I found myself much more emotional regarding life’s special moments post-COVID. As mothers, we know the heart strings pulled by a child’s growth and accomplishments. As I watched my oldest child graduate high school, I was flooded with emotions that added up to the simple fact that I was in awe of this very special person. For me, to watch someone start their journey with a world of opportunity before them is simply one of life’s most beautiful moments. Confirming beauty is all around, I hope you’re basking in your beautiful moments, too! A favorite to produce and OMG, a lot of hard work, enjoy this special issue!

the Scope of Care at AMG H
aving just joined the team in February, Radiologist Dr. Brandon Nichols says he’s excited about the upcoming changes to the Radiology Department at Alabama Medical Group. With added imaging and same-day services on the horizon, AMG will now offer CT, MRI, and mammography services to its patients — thus making it one of the most advanced imaging centers in all of Mobile. The addition of advanced imaging services at AMG will be revolutionary for the care of its patients — particularly in cases where same-day imaging could be provided, Dr. Nichols shares. “A few weeks ago, for example, we had a 36-year-old lady who came in to see her primary care physician due to blood in her urine,” Dr. Nichols details. “After examining her, the physician ordered some lab work that confirmed blood in her urine. A renal ultrasound was then ordered and performed by a technologist/sonographer where she saw a mass. The sonographer then sent images to me, and I reviewed them along with the lab work and clinical history. I issued a report, recommended a follow-up CT, and called the primary care physician. The patient then went back to her primary care physician to discuss what was seen on her scan. She was then scheduled for a follow-up CT in

three to five days, and an appointment with a urologist a week after that.” Talk about a long process! “With the addition of our advanced imaging to the AMG clinic, we likely would have been able to do her CT the same day she was there and had her followup with the urologist even sooner,” Dr. Nichols says. “This provides a more efficient path to diagnosis while saving our patient time, money, and stress. This is the driving force behind adding advanced imaging at AMG.” But what does the addition of each service entail? “MRI offers the best evaluation of the brain, spine, and joints, along with many other uses
including evaluation of masses,” Dr. Nichols explains. “The added advantage is that it does all of this without using radiation. Our MRI is also a wide/open bore magnet, which will greatly benefit any patients with claustrophobia.” CT is a faster answer to many clinical diagnoses compared to MRI, Dr. Nichols adds, as the scan time typically takes less than 30 seconds. “It often is used to further evaluate any abnormality seen on radiographs or ultrasound,” he details. “Additionally, it is the first line test to look for many disease processes such as kidney stones, appendicitis, diverticulitis, and neuro-
logic deficits. As this is a broadly used modality, the addition of CT to our clinic will provide benefits to all of our patients.” As for the addition of mammography services at AMG? “Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women with 250,000 new cases every year,” Dr. Nichols shares. “However, the mortality rate in America has decreased 41 percent in the past 30 years. A major reason for this improvement is early detection due to screening mammography.” Dr. Nichols says it is recommended that women begin screening at age 40, having mammograms performed annually from that point forward. “We will offer these screening services, and in addition to receiving results from their physician, patients will also receive results mailed to them at home, as well as a reminder letter for when it is time to come back in for their next mammogram,” he confirms. At the end of the day, Dr. Nichols says he just wants his patients to be comfortable. “I wish patients knew that it is normal to be anxious,” he shares. “I often have patients apologize for being nervous when they come in for a procedure, but I like to tell them, ‘It’s normal to be nervous, and as long as I’m not nervous we’ll be just fine.’ That usually elicits a little chuckle and a deep breath that I hope provides a little comfort during a stressful day in the life of a patient.”

Jason + Lane Pilger HOMETOWN
East Troy, Wisconsin + Pa sca g o u l a, Miss is sipp i Honest, outgoing, and always willing to help others succeed, Jason Pilger leads his company with finesse and panache, presiding over the enterprise bearing his name with his wife of 14 years, Lane Pilger, serving as his greatest support. With an empire built on his start as a car salesman, Jason Pilger Automotive has grown to boast four dealership locations from Jackson and Atmore in Alabama to two in Gautier, Mississippi, and an inventory unmatched by area competitors. “I can’t thank the people of the Gulf Coast enough for their continued support and for the blessed growth of our dealerships,” Jason emphasizes. Away from the office, Jason enjoys coaching his son’s baseball team and fourth grade football at UMS-Wright and contributes heavily to the Gulf Coast community. The Pilgers established Jason Pilger CAREs (Caring Always Requires Empathy) to help give back year-round by hosting efforts such as monthly blood drives for LifeSOUTH at each of their dealerships to help local hospitals, and regularly donate to charities including Sav-a-Life Escambia County, Junior League of Mobile, and the City of Jackson Toy and Jacket Drive. “We support a variety of local sports teams, parks, and schools, most notably as the title sponsor for the William Mitchell Memorial Basketball Tournament at UMS-Wright for the last few years,” Lane shares, adding the Pilgers’ philanthropic efforts stem from their deep love for their children (Anna Kathryn, 18; Kaylee Mae, 17; and Connor, 9). “They are the true difference makers,” Jason insists as Lane quips, “They definitely keep us on our toes!” When able, Jason enjoys hunting and coaching, while Lane prefers reading, playing word games, exercising, and watching their children play sports. Their common interests? Skiing, traveling, and boating. “We just love the Southern hospitality and beaches here,” Jason says. Naturally, owning an auto franchise wasn’t Jason’s ultimate dream as a young man, admitting he initially aspired to land among the U.S. Navy SEALs. “It’s probably the most hardcore job on the planet,” he says, guessing that if he had to switch careers today, he’d probably go to law school. “I’m competitive, so I’m up for trying anything,” he jokes. As for Lane? “I wanted to be a veterinarian as a kid, but today, there’s nothing more rewarding than being a mother.” Having already met his professional goals as a business owner, Jason says his hopes for the future center around making sure his family stays healthy and “raising my three children to be good, caring adults,” he avows. “We want them to be kind, successful, and have integrity,” Lane adds. A man of his word, Jason prides himself most on being someone others can count on to do what he says he’s going to do. “I enjoy helping people — from a child hitting or catching a baseball to helping someone succeed in their career,” Jason says. “Kindness is key,” Lane concludes. Thankfully, the Pilgers know a thing or two about service. JASON’S FUN FACT? “I can cry in a sad movie.” LANE’S GUILTY PLEASURES? “I love my alone time, red wine, and AirHeads.” 14 ACCESS Magazine / June-July 2021

Audra + Abe L. Harper Jr. HOMETOWN
P e n sa co la, Florid a + Da phne , Alabama It’s a family affair for Audra and Abe Harper Jr. We love a good origin story, and Abe’s is spectacular. The President of Harper Technologies, LLC, Abe says, “After three years of college, I left to pursue my dream of starting a computer service business with $75 to my name. My brother and I purchased a business license and bartered for some office space. It was an exciting time for 19-year-old me and my 13-year-old brother Carl, my business partner.” Talk about starting young! Operations Administrator Audra joined them a bit later, telling us, “I left the banking industry to join Abe and Carl when the business was expanding. As the company grew, so did my responsibilities and role.” Married for 15 years, they have two daughters (Natalie, 7; and Erin, 3) and Audra shares, “We’re also joyfully expecting our third child in late fall.” Congrats to this marvelous pair! Citing each other as their biggest inspiration, Audra says, “I admire Abe for his drive and character. I wouldn’t be the woman I am without his encouragement, love, and support.” Abe’s reply mirrors hers — did we mention they’re soulmates? They also agree their best adventure was their 15-year anniversary trip to Alaska, perfectly planned by Abe, where “we went ice fishing, flew over the majestic Denali, and went snowmobiling together. It was the most fun I’ve ever had on vacation,” beams Audra. They also give back to the community, with Abe asserting it’s a privilege for him to serve as director or chairman for a host of organizations including Prichard Preparatory School, City Hope Church, Merchants and Marine Bank, and far too many others to list here. Audra is Board Treasurer for Victory Health Partners and states, “I’m also on the board for United Way of Southwest Alabama and the Community Foundation of South Alabama.” Their goals for the future align. Audra tells us her greatest hope “is accomplishing what I was created to do on this Earth, to leave this world a little better than I found it, and to help raise our children to do the same.” Abe adds, “I want to be a role model our children want to emulate. It’s a big deal to me that they’re proud of the legacy they inherit.” We think Audra and Abe are accomplishing just that — one good deed at a time. ABE’S BEST ADVICE? “From my dad: ‘Watch. Wallet. Word.’ Be on time, pay your debts, and do what you say you’re going to do.” AUDRA’S MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT? “Failing a chemistry class my freshman year of college. I went from graduating high school with straight A’s to academic probation because I didn’t know I could drop classes.”

Susan Anderson George HOMETOWN
M o b ile , Al abama After years in the financial arena, Susan Anderson George found herself looking for a career change. On a whim, Susan took a chance and made the decision to buy LUSH Home Garden Event from longtime friend Tim Burt last September, now serving as owner of the floral, garden, and event division of the shop. “I decided to explore my creative side and do something that makes me happy every day,” Susan says, adding that Tim still runs the company’s interior design department. “I just love creating beautiful flower arrangements that make people smile. If you follow your dreams and find a job that makes you happy, then you will never work a day in your life.” Having grown up in the Bay Area, Susan spent 14 years moving around the country before planting roots in Mobile. “I’m happy to be back home,” she beams. Fun, easygoing, and relatable, Susan makes a genuine effort to get along with everyone and loves being around others (which comes as no surprise, given her large family). “I am married to Patrick George and together we have eight children: Ben Friend, Jacob George, Carley Rodriquez, Katie Morgan, Patrick George, Jr., Rance Morgan, Hannah George, and Kendall George (deceased),” she shares. “We also have four grandchildren: Maddie and Hayes Friend and Blakely and Brayden George.” In her downtime, Susan relishes time by the pool with a good book or hitting The Holiday, Shop Rise, Ashland Pub, or Ruth’s Chris for a classy new outfit, delicious cocktail, or mouthwatering meal. She’s also been a member of a parading Mardi Gras society for the last 25 years, and loves rooting for the Tide as a University of Alabama alum. Her goals moving forward? “I want to grow this floral business and would like to greatly expand our wedding and event department,” Susan affirms. “Even though we are a repeat Nappie winner, many people don’t realize that we are a full-service florist. I would love to be able to add more staff, an additional delivery van, and maybe even a second location at the beach.”
MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT? “When I fell off my stool working in the shop!” MOST SURPRISING TAKEAWAY FROM THE JOB THUS FAR? “How many people from my past I’ve reconnected with in Mobile as they’ve come into the shop. I love the people here. Everyone is so friendly and supportive of small businesses.”

Angela Ashcraft HOMETOWN
M o n tg o m e ry, Alabama Described by her sister as “everything true and beautiful about the South,” Angela Ashcraft is a true gem. As owner of Express Employment Professionals, Angela strives daily to improve the lives of others, whether it’s helping a company find the perfect candidate for a job or working to find immediate employment for those temporarily down on their luck. “Helping people find jobs right away to pay their bills until we can find them something more permanent is very rewarding,” she shares, especially during the pandemic. “Making a difference is what keeps me going.” The most interesting aspect of the job? The different stories she’s heard over the years as to why someone can’t go to work. “We actually have a book of them for a future reality show,” she jokes. Having moved to our corner of paradise in 1995, Angela and her husband, Chris, bought their first Express office in Mobile in 2006, adding two additional offices in Summerdale and LaGrange, Ga., as the business grew. “It’s been the best decision we’ve made for our family,” she says, making note of her sons, Carson (21) and Davis (18). The Ashcrafts also work with a variety of philanthropic programs annually — most recently Ridden Word, a nonprofit bicycle ministry in Robertsdale. In her free time, Angela enjoys fishing (particularly the deep-sea variety), gardening, cooking, and soaking up time with her family. “I know it sounds like a cliché, but they are my life and the reason I get up every day,” she professes. Channeling her grandmother, Bessie, who helped raise her after her parents divorced, Angela emulates this “epitome of a Southern Lady” by being a good listener, positive mentor, and by loving life in a way that ensures others around her are enjoying it, too. “Bessie taught me to be positive, kind, and giving of my time,” Angela shares, joking she also taught her to play poker at a very young age! Her personal mantra? Live at 212 degrees. “212° The Extra Degree is a great book that talks about embracing the value of a little extra effort to take things to the next level,” Angela explains. “At 211 degrees, water is hot, but at 212 degrees, it boils. It’s all about making that extra effort.” CHILDHOOD DREAM JOB? “I wanted to be an actress. I studied theater at Birmingham-Southern my freshman year and always enjoyed watching plays and musicals.” MOST EXCITING ADVENTURE? “We rented a power catamaran and went island hopping throughout the British Virgin Islands. No agenda, no schedule — just family fun without phones. It was absolutely beautiful.”

Dr. Michael Babston HOMETOWN
M o n tg o m e ry, Alabama As driven as he is energetic, Dr. Michael Babston of Mobile Oral Surgery maintains that any obstacle in life can be overcome by faith in God and the love of family and friends — a mantra he visits daily to keep a level head and preserve his focus in what are often highstakes dental situations. Priding himself on his ability to ease anxiety and pain in patients with dental phobia or several dental issues as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Babston admits his bread and butter are trauma and facial reconstructions, humbled by the affect he’s able to have. “It’s so rewarding to see the positive impact you can have on someone for the rest of their life,” he says. With an influence extending far beyond the dental chair, Dr. Babston is father to Liza Marie (who turns 3 in August) and Cooper James (who celebrates his 1st birthday this June). Inspired by his own mother and grandmother, Dr. Babston says their tenacity, positivity, and faith (despite numerous trials) embolden him to be a better man and impart their kindness and positivity on his own children. “Being kind to others — no matter their situation — is what makes a person truly beautiful,” Dr. Babston says, who also provides charity work through local hospitals in addition to the practice’s involvement in numerous local charitable organizations. In his downtime, Dr. Babston enjoys the outdoors, hitting the park with his kids, watching sports, and traveling with friends and family, citing The Europe Hotel & Spa in Ireland as his most exciting getaway to date. “I also run like Forrest Gump,” he jokes. A random fun fact? “I was once bit by a snake, and I was beaten up by a girl in the fourth grade,” he shares. Yikes! All told, Dr. Babston says he’s loved life on the Bay over the course of the last four years and appreciates its proximity to New Orleans, Dauphin Island, and Orange Beach. His parting words of wisdom? A quote from Andy Dufresne: “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.”
FAVORITE TV SHOWS? “I’m pretty big on Schitt’s Creek right now (just a couple of years late). It’s mindless and makes me laugh. Seinfeld is also a classic.” CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT: “Sweet Tea.”

Mary Berry HOMETOWN
M o b ile , Al abama With that name, how could we not love her already? Operations Manager for Express Employment Professionals, a rapidly expanding business, Mary Berry is one to watch. She’s moved up through the company on the basis of her work ethic and optimistic attitude and her favorite quote explains her approach to life. “Rumi said, ‘Live life as if everything is rigged in your favor.’ This highlights the importance of positive thinking and I try to remember it in all situations. Everything is planned in our favor, which leads to positive outcomes,” she says. It helps that she loves her job and her team, telling us, “If the world of collaborative teamwork is coffee, Team Ashcraft is Red Bull. I get to wake up every day and be with people I truly care about, respect, and get to grow alongside.” Mary’s learned, too, adding, “Hire the people you feel are the best, give them the tools they need, and then get out of their way!” She also feels fortunate to be part of a philanthropically minded business. “Every year, we have a ‘Pay it Forward’ hiring campaign,” she shares. “We also pick a Bay Area charity each year and deliver a check to them.” Life here is beautiful, according to Mary. “The Bay Area has an energy like a magnet, and you can’t help but be drawn to it,” she states. “I’m grateful for the friendships and relationships I’ve been blessed to gain.” With Noja and Callaghan’s at the top of her list for going out, she’s also happy to have a relaxing night in. Asked her guilty pleasure, she says, “I enjoy being at my loft, listening to Taylor Swift, enjoying a glass of red wine, and catching up on all my favorite Bravo TV shows.” But Mary has another side, and it’s criminal. In her downtime, she shares, “I’m guilty of binge-watching true crime shows, then listening to a podcast about the same crime I just watched.” And her childhood dream job? Let’s just say we see a pattern here. “I wanted to be on the show Murder, She Wrote. I wanted to have a typewriter and solve crimes alongside Angela Lansbury on my bike. Seriously, I really wanted to be Jessica Fletcher.” It really would be criminal not to smile after reading that, folks.
FUN FACT? “I still have my 1,000 hours of free AOL CD.” BEST ADVICE RECEIVED? “Life is a balance between holding on and letting go.” Hair Brandi Hoover, Sanctuary Salon, 251.990.4779. / Makeup Jessica Price, Primp Lash & Beauty, 251.623.5770. Amber N. Bell HOMETOWN
Al a b a s te r, Al a ba ma You never know what’s just around the corner (or, if you’re Amber Bell, who you’ll meet when you go for coffee). She says, “After my daughter was born, I wanted to get out of the finance industry to have time for her and also truly enjoy my job. One day at Nova Espresso in downtown Mobile, I met Murphy Bishop II, CEO of The Better Skin Co. We talked about beauty and business and clicked almost instantly. The rest is history!” Now Manager of Brand Development at The Better Skin Co., Amber admits it was surprising to learn the impact a skincare company can have on people, sharing, “I never realized how many people struggle with their skincare and what to use daily. Much like music, skin connects us all.” The company was immensely affected by COVID-19. According to Amber, “We were fortunate to have a huge increase in our sales and overall brand outreach. I had to learn how to fire our e-commerce business on all cylinders as well as in-house advertising.” And the education never stops in the ever-changing digital world. “I’m constantly learning how social media and the market is evolving. Plus, I get to meet celebrities and influencers,” she grins. Listing Murphy Bishop II as her inspiration, she asks, “From humble beginnings in Grand Bay to owning a multi-million-dollar business, what’s not to be inspired by?” Calling the Bay Area home for nine years now, she embraces the life she’s built with her significant other, Corey, and her 4-yearold daughter, Fjori Martin. Committed to our citizens, she claims, “I’m actively involved in supporting the Distinguished Young Women program, I advocate for affordable housing while providing various housing opportunities, and I’m an active proponent for LGBTQ+ rights in the community.” Free time is spent gardening with her daughter, working out, on the beach, or watching Auburn football. Favorite hangouts? “You can usually find me at Nova Espresso, Roosters, or The Ice Box Bar,” she says. And we can’t stop laughing at the embarrassing moment she shares: “I officiated a wedding once and the wedding party kept calling me, ‘Amy.’ I didn’t want to be rude and correct them, but finally I told the mother of the bride my name was Amber. She thought I was kidding and proceeded to give a toast to ‘Amy.’” We offer our own “Cheers!” to one of our area’s rising stars (and promise to remember her name). Michelle Walters Bigler HOMETOWN
I rv ing to n, Alabama Think you can outlast Michelle Bigler? You might want to reconsider. This Associate Broker with Wise Living Real Estate works nonstop to give her clients, community, and family the care they deserve. Born and raised here, she knows the Bay Area inside and out. She says, “I love meeting new people, being an advocate for our beautiful area, and helping families find their forever home.” It’s clear she chose the right path in life two decades ago, going from owning an advertising agency to real estate. “I wanted more flexibility because I was a single parent and wanted more time to spend with my two children,” she says, adding, “I knew I could also incorporate the skills I’d developed over the years with my love for community building. I love what I do and have no regrets.” Married to Bruce Bigler, Michelle considers herself “fortunate he’s my husband, friend, and business partner.” Their blended family consists of “four amazing children (Donnie, Daniel, Weslyn, and young Maxwell, 8),” she tells us, declaring, “My favorite title and job is ‘Mom.’ My children and family are, without a doubt, my greatest blessing.” A bonus blessing? “My daughter Weslyn is getting married next spring! I’m thrilled another son is joining our crazy family dynamic,” she laughs. Michelle’s views on beauty? She claims, “To me, beauty is what you give and what’s in your heart.” Practicing what she preaches, Michelle is a proud member of Impact 100, a group of women devoted to helping nonprofits in Baldwin County, and loves the organization’s purpose and drive. “I’m passionate about the mission of females giving back to our community in such a positive and deliberate way,” she shares. Future goals? Watch out, folks. Michelle has plans. “As the mother of a child with special needs, I want to open a dialogue on the subject of disabilities — cultivating space for acceptance, compassion, and learning to encourage others,” she says, adding, “My biggest prayer is that my Maxwell finds his voice! My dream is to start a nonprofit for children and adults with neurological issues.” We give Michelle a standing ovation for her heart of gold. CHILDHOOD DREAM JOB? “I really wanted to be a lawyer because I have really good negotiating skills. That said, am I too old to be a spy?” BEST ADVICE RECEIVED? “‘If you see someone without a smile, give them yours.’ I often share that with my children because it’s meant so much in my life.” 22 ACCESS Magazine / June-July 2021

Khalilah V. Burton, Ed.D. HOMETOWN
Ea st P o i nt, G eorgia If you don’t know Dr. Khalilah Burton, it’s about time you do. The Vice Provost for Institutional Effectiveness, Planning, and Compliance at Columbia Southern University, Khalilah says she got her start by volunteering for a project no one else wanted. “I was a college instructor at the time and the president needed a willing person to take on the institution’s planning initiatives for accreditation,” she recalls. “I dove in head-first, and I’m still kicking, as they say.” With a list of accolades longer than she is tall, Khalilah also recently obtained her doctorate degree — but that’s just the tip of the iceberg for this showstopper. Patient, kind, and tenacious, Khalilah extends her giving spirit and leadership skills in multiple arenas within the Bay Area community she’s called home for the last eight years. “Professionally, I volunteer as a member of the City of Daphne’s Educational Advisory Committee, am on the Parent Advisory Committee for Daphne Elementary School’s Counseling Program, mentor and hold an office in the Eastern Shore Toastmaster’s Club, and am a commissioner for the Distance Education Accrediting Commission,” she shares. “In the community, I volunteer with my sorority, the Baldwin County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. I also volunteer as troop leader for a local Girl Scout troop through which we serve and support multiple agencies and organizations.” Ultra-involved, Khalilah’s light shines in her treatment of those around her. “I believe the giver’s hand is never empty,” she says. “When I can encourage or build up someone else, I become empowered. It makes me feel beautiful.” Citing her husband, Donald, as her most intimate and closest friend, Khalilah says he often describes her as kind, nonjudgmental, a “reckless giver,” and very driven. “He’s said often that both what he loves the most and what annoys him the most is my tenacity,” she jokes, though she insists, “between the two of us, he’s the better human.” (We have a hard time imagining someone more inspiring, but okay, sis! We hear you!). Together with their daughters (Krista, 13; and Kyra, 9), the Burtons are further invested in the Daphne community through their children’s many sports and extracurriculars and have planted deep, flourishing roots in the Bay Area. Khalilah’s hopes for the future? “That I have no regrets,” she says. “I want to enjoy life without worry and be there for my children if they need me as they become women and all that comes along with that, as well as continue exploring the world with Donald.” BEST ADVICE RECEIVED? “My dad always says, ‘If you keep doin’ whatcha doin’, you’ll keep gettin’ whatcha gettin.’ That saying has helped me in almost every aspect of my life.” CHILDHOOD DREAM JOB? “I wanted to be a teacher. I thought writing on a chalkboard and grading papers was so cool!”

Silvana Kelly Calderone HOMETOWN
D ana P o i nt, California Silvana “Kelly” Calderone is as fascinated by the evolution of technology and the advances in the digital advertising industry as she is driven, proving her the ultimate package as Partner and Head of Digital Strategy for Envy Media Group. “I spend a lot of time researching new trends and tools so I can bring the best and most innovative solutions to our clients,” she attests, joking she got her start in digital media and marketing “before it was cool… you know, back in the MySpace days.” Having worked for several large media organizations in executive roles (including FOX10 and Alabama Media Group), Kelly ultimately opted to join digital agency Envy Media Group with business partner Heather Harp last year, and pandemic-era business is booming. Wife to Nick Calderone and mother to Michael (21), Kelly spends her downtime catching up with friends, boating, beaching it, or dining at area favorites Southwood Kitchen, Noja, The Gulf, Red or White, and latest Fairhope addition, La Martina. Multifaceted and adventurous, she’s also an angler on the Breathe Easy Ladies’ Fishing Team, drives a Vespa, and plays the cello. “I’m ambidextrous, too,” she laughs. Her most exciting exploit? “I worked for ItalyMagazine.com a few years back and had the opportunity to spend a couple of weeks in Modica, Sicily with my team and my husband,” she regales. An Italian American citizen, Kelly actually lived in Italy from ages 10 to 14 and is fluent in Italian. “We rented a Fiat, drove around the island, explored picturesque small towns, spent my birthday in Taormina, and ate all the things. My husband went back to the states and I flew on to London and attended the World Travel Market. There is something about travelling solo that is both wonderful and terrifying at the same time.” Having lost her father 30 years ago, Kelly credits her mom, Janette Di Donato, as her greatest inspiration and support, citing her strength and devotion as a single mother as her model of perseverance. “She owned a Day Spa in Mobile for many years and still practices skin care in Daphne,” Kelly shares. “Her example shaped who I am as a mother, wife, and businesswoman.” Involved in various philanthropic organizations through her church, City Hope, Kelly seeks to be a light to others, just as her mom is to her. Her parting advice? “Don’t do something permanently stupid when you’re temporarily upset,” she cautions. “A decision made while mad, hurt, or upset is almost always a bad one.” HOW DO YOU EMANATE INNER BEAUTY? “I try to stay positive and keep my mind focused on all the things for which I’m thankful.” BEST ADVICE RECEIVED? “’Don’t just apply for the job you’re qualified for; apply for the job you want.’ (Thank you, Sharon Moloney.)” 26 ACCESS Magazine / June-July 2021

Victoria + Barry Carlisle HOMETOWN
Fair hope, Alabama True partners in life, Vicki and Barry Carlisle even complete each other’s sentences and consider each other their best friend. For Vicki, beauty is “my passion for taking care of my family and friends. My calling was to be a mother; I have a natural instinct to love, nurture, and protect. My friends call me ‘Mama V.’” Barry’s view mirrors hers. “I care a great deal how others feel. I know a single smile or compliment can make someone’s day. I love being positive and spreading happiness to everyone I meet.” See what we mean? Office Manager at Advanced Dental Comfort, Vicki enjoys “making our patients feel special every single day.” Confirming her desire to take care of everyone, she reminds us dental health can affect our overall health. Barry owns building consulting firm B. Carlisle, LLC, and enjoys working with clients around the country. He’s happy to have learned from the pandemic that his business is recession-proof. With six children between them, Vicki has two sons (Christian and Carter), and Barry has four (Hannah, Taylor, Landon, and Lael). “Vicki and I basically have grown kids with only my 15-year-old daughter to raise,” Barry details. “Our child together is our precious pup, Baylor. We are now those ‘dog people’ who take their dog everywhere,” he laughs. Life on the Bay is, for both, all about the people and sense of community. Barry shares, “I’ve lived and traveled all over the country, but our area has the greatest people and connections on the planet.” Vicki also loves “being close to the beach and the small-town feel of Fairhope.” They like spending time together at Big Fish and Anchor Bar & Grill in Orange Beach, Camellia Café and Dragonfly in Fairhope, and Chuck’s Fish and The Stables Bar in Mobile. Ultimately, it’s obvious they’re happiest when making each other happy. Barry says, “I love to make Vicki happy and make every day as special as it can be — it really is my thing. It works out for me, too, because she reciprocates my efforts and makes my life amazing.” Vicki is more succinct but just as clear, saying, “Barry has the biggest heart of anyone I know.” Their best advice? From Vicki: “A big ego gets in the way of real connections, relationships, and peace; lose that and be real.” Barry says, “Your chosen life partner is the most important investment you’ll ever make.” We can’t decide which we like better, so we’re calling it a draw. VICKI’S GUILTY PLEASURE? “Sour cream and onion potato chips. I literally hide them under my bed.” BARRY’S FUN FACT? “No matter how hard I try, I cannot learn the shuffle dance.” 28 ACCESS Magazine / June-July 2021

Seth Cherniak HOMETOWN
M o b ile , Al abama As Vice President/Branch Manager of The Jeffrey Matthews Financial Group, you might expect Seth Cherniak to be one serious man, but he’s much more — a loving husband and father with a first-rate sense of humor. Asked how long he’s lived here, he replies, “My entire life, save for the four years I was held prisoner of war at Auburn University.” And he’s not afraid to sell himself; he got his start by cold-calling brokerage firms for interviews, which led to his first job in the business. COVID-19 presented a challenge Seth and the firm were ready to meet. He says, “The shutdown affected financial markets and we adapted to ensure our clients (with whom we couldn’t meet in person) continued to receive the same level of service they expect from us.” Married to Barbara for 31 years, they have two sons: Elliot (22), and Ira (19). Seth is an involved dad, sharing, “Ira plays lacrosse and I kept his stats. When he played on the St. Paul’s club team, I volunteered to keep the stats for the whole team.” This dovetails with a priceless mental image we can’t stop seeing as he recounts an embarrassing moment: “At a game, I sat in a camp chair that had dry rotted. I fell straight through and got wrapped up in the skeleton of the chair.” Volunteering to teach music and playing guitar for the religious school at the Springhill Avenue Temple is an extension of Seth’s love of music. He also plays bass in the Dial Street Band, a talented local group. He’s positively jubilant about his life here, saying, “We live near Dog River and keep our boat at Dauphin Island, so we can be on Mississippi Sound in 30 minutes. When I drive over the Bayway and see the Bay and the Delta, I literally say out loud: ‘I can’t believe we live here,’ and I’ve lived here my whole life.” For Seth, beauty is “being present, aware, and practicing gratitude daily.” His mantra? “‘It’s not that everything is gonna be okay. Everything is okay.’ If you assess what’s going on around you at that very moment, your family, and having your basic needs met, you quickly realize that you’re usually in pretty good shape.”
FAVORITE LOCAL SPOT? “Pot Au Pho on Azalea Road. Order B-4. Trust me.” GUILTY PLEASURES? “Floating in the pool in a $7 Walmart floatie and listening to Grateful Dead shows while eating freezer pops. Also, the song ‘MMMBop’ by Hanson.”

Trip Cobb + Blane Sexton HOMETOWNS
B i rmingham, Alabama + J ohnso n City, Tenness ee Well into their second year of marriage, Trip Cobb and Blane Sexton are still celebrating. “Trip is the kindest, most big-hearted man you’ll ever meet,” Blane says. And Trip is equally enamored, telling us, “Blane is one of the funniest and most charismatic guys on the planet.” Aww, guys! There’s not much they disagree on, including thankfulness for their wedding two days prior to the pandemic shutdown. Trip exclaims, “It was the most amazing and magical day — we’re grateful we got married when we did.” As a Field Sales Manager for Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Trip is excited to be back traveling the state, as COVID-19 drastically affected the company. “Unfortunately, we lost many restaurants and bars across the state,” he says. “I was thankfully able to help my accounts explore new income routes, like selling cocktail kits.” Further, he aided his nonprofit partners in fundraising, for which the Alabama Restaurant and Hospitality Association named him Humanitarian of the Year for 2020. The brand’s owner and his wife, Tito and Lori Beveridge, are heroes to him. “They’re truly the most genuine and giving individuals, empowering everyone at Tito’s with the tools to make a difference within our communities.” Blane, a physical therapist at OrthoAlabama Spine & Sports, loves getting to know his patients and working with them towards healing. He shares, “I worked throughout the pandemic. It was a scary time, but I’m grateful I was able to interact with people while so many were isolated. It was an opportunity for everyone, despite the misfortunes, to appreciate what matters.” Trip’s family has “been blessed to have a house on Ono Island since I was born. I couldn’t imagine a more perfect place to spend our summers,” this Birmingham local tells us. “There’s nothing more calming than Gulf breezes — life slows down here.” Blane agrees. “I love the peace I feel on the water,” he shares. We second that emotion.
TRIP’S FUN FACT? “I find space absolutely fascinating and would go there in a heartbeat if given the opportunity. Beam me up, Scotty!” BLANE’S FUN FACT? “People are surprised I like professional wrestling. It’s a part of my childhood I’ve always kept with me; it reminds me of my family.”

Jared Cochran HOMETOWN
Geoffrey Cochran HOMETOWN
Mob i l e, Al ab am a
Mob i l e, Al a ba ma
A man who truly “works hard to play hard,” Jared Cochran (one half of the dynamic duo that owns and operates Cochran Builders, Inc.) knows his way around a tool belt. Having started the business with his brother, Geoffrey, in 2004, the pair have built their brand from the ground up, with the resounding success of the company firmly planted on their shoulders. “The most surprising aspect of the job is how much goes into building a house these days,” Jared admits. “There is a lot more that goes into a build in 2021 than say, 20 years ago.” Inspired by his father’s work ethic, Jared cites his dad as his business impetus. “He taught not just by telling me, but through his actions,” he shares. “I wanted to be like my dad when I was young; to grow up to own my own business like him. Today, if I had to change careers, I’d be in trouble. I love what I do and can’t imagine doing anything else.” When he’s not building dream homes along the Gulf Coast, Jared enjoys spending time with his girlfriend, Meredith, and her two children: Owen (12), and Kelton (10). He also indulges in upland bird hunting and fishing at any given opportunity. “There’s nothing like pheasant hunting in South Dakota in the fall or Mobile Bay fishing,” he asserts. “We have some of the best fishing in the United States right here in Mobile Bay.” Additionally, he used to race boats for the Outboard Drag Boat Association. Not surprisingly, Jared says if he didn’t have to work, he’d spend all his time “in the great outdoors” fishing and hunting. As temperate as they come, Jared says at the end of the day he just tries to be himself and put his best foot forward in everything he does. “I strive to be genuine, honest, and kind,” he says. “You have to treat people the way you want to be treated.” His favorite quote? A gem from Aristotle: “You are what you repeatedly do.” Excellence ought to be a habit; not an act, Jared insists. “I like this because when you repeatedly do the right thing, the right way, it will become commonplace, not a surprise.”
Co-owner of Cochran Builders, Inc. alongside brother Jared, Geoffrey Cochran enjoys the diversity his job entails, as he’s never doing the same thing twice. “Every project is unique, and that always keeps it interesting,” says Geoffrey, who opened the company with Jared 17 years ago. “I have the opportunity to work daily with some amazing architects and decorators and love getting to work with the latest and greatest products on the building market.” His father already in construction, Geoffrey says he entered the building world after finishing school, adding, “It was naturally in my blood.” Fast-forward a few years, and Geoffrey had already built a few homes for himself. “Then I started building some specs, and local architect L. Craig Roberts noticed our work and really helped us move into the high-end sector of building architectural residences,” he details. “Some of the homes we build are extremely complicated, and yet our guys always rise to the challenge and produce!” Happily married, Geoffrey shares an 11-year-old daughter, Savannah Lane, with wife Ashley and jokes that there’s so much to love about Bay Area living that it’s too much to list. “Being a sportsman, you couldn’t really ask for a better place to live,” Geoffrey argues. “Hunting, fishing, and boating are all favorite hobbies for me, and our area has it in abundance.” Not surprisingly, some of his favorite shopping spots include McCoy Outdoor Co. and Bass Pro Shops, though he enjoys Southwood Kitchen, Sunset Pointe, and Kitchen on Main when he’s not out catching his own dinner. A positive guy through and through, Geoffrey says he always sees the glass as half full, trying his best to bring an authentic vibe to each jobsite and focus on the good. “High job morale and a positive atmosphere leads to a better finished product,” he asserts. “Our parents taught us from an early age to work hard, show up every day, and do our best.” His favorite quote? An excerpt from Lonesome Dove: “In the movie, Augustus ‘Gus’ McCrae says, ‘It ain’t dyin’ I’m talking about, it’s livin’!’ I try my very best to live every day and enjoy what I’ve been blessed with. Life is too short to worry.”
HOPES AND GOALS FOR THE FUTURE? “I hope to continue to run a successful business that at the end of my time has a great reputation and track record of successful builds.”
IF YOU DIDN’T HAVE TO WORK? “I’d spend my time traveling with my girls and hunting and fishing with my brother.”
MOST EXCITING ADVENTURE? “An impromptu trip to Steinbach, Canada, for a window and door trip. They surprised us on the second day and took us to Lake of the Woods, Ontario, for a Walleye fishing trip and shore lunch.”
HOPES AND GOALS FOR THE FUTURE? “Having a successful business is obviously the goal, but I want to also invest more time in my family, and more importantly, my daughter. Helping her succeed and seeing what God has planned for her are things I very much look forward to.”
Mary Emily Davidson HOMETOWN
Mobile, Alabama Mary Emily Davidson wakes up made up, especially as owner and permanent makeup artist for Outliner Studio. “Through the art of permanent makeup, I love how natural and immediate results are, as well as the confidence I see in my clients as they leave my studio,” Mary Emily shares. But how does one get involved in permanent makeup? “I always knew I loved art and have studied it my entire life,” Mary Emily details. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, Mary Emily studied portraiture and figure drawing while in school, drawn to the world of permanent makeup based on the lack of natural results she’d seen at the time. “I was determined to create techniques that were gentle, beautiful, and natural, so I decided to give my skillsets and dreams a shot,” she says. Thus, Outliner Studio was born! Married to Jeremy Davidson, Mary Emily has two children (John Morgan Davidson, 14, and Ava June Davidson, 10), and says she works to show grace, practice acceptance, and share love with everyone she encounters. “It’s important to show grace, even when it isn’t deserved,” she insists. “I practice acceptance because life is more beautiful with people who aren’t exactly like me in it, and I share love because we all need it to survive.” She also strives to give encouragement “because we all need a tribe of people or a random kind word to lift us up to our life’s potential,” she says, noting life is much sweeter when appreciating the little things with a thankful heart. Inspired by those who lift others up, Mary Emily also dedicates her time to Fuse Project, an organization near and dear to her heart, and enjoys art and cycling in her downtime. “I’m also a savage Connect Four player,” Mary Emily boasts, having even entered a Connect Four tournament in downtown Mobile once. “There was only one other person who showed up,” she laughs. “I won!”
PERSONAL MANTRA? “I have an alarm set with my mantra every day for noon that says, ‘I am loved. I am determined. I am unstoppable.’” IF SHE DIDN’T HAVE TO WORK? “I love to work, but if I didn’t have my business, I would volunteer more, exercise more, and teach my gifts to others.”

Allie Dubose HOMETOWN
Ho m e stea d, Florida Bursting with charm and sporting a standup comic-level sense of humor, Allie Dubose is the kind of girl you love to have around. The Marketing Coordinator for the Ashcraft family’s three Express Employment Professionals franchises, Allie says she initially got her start in sales and radio spots on a sports station in Boston before landing her role with Express in 2017. “A large part of my role is sharing our brand and being a face for our company, so I’m able to participate in many community events and volunteer opportunities,” she shares, adding she loves meeting new people and giving back — things she does regularly as a member of the Board of Directors for the Saraland Area Chamber of Commerce, a Diplomat with the SouthWest Mobile County Chamber of Commerce, and an active member of all of the remaining local chambers of commerce in Mobile and Baldwin counties. Talk about involved! Engaged to high school sweetheart Rhett Myrick as of last December, Allie is elated to now have a precious bonus daughter, Lillian Myrick (3), to help raise alongside her love. Together, the three enjoy fishing, concerts, camping, hiking, bowling, darts, traveling to new places, cooking, crafts, kayaking, beach days, dancing, sightseeing, and ice skating. And though she didn’t exactly live out her childhood dream of becoming Kristi Yamaguchi in figure skating, Allie professes a love of the rink rivaled only by the pros. “A kid from the South with not much ice around her anywhere … a girl could dream, right?” Allie jokes. When it comes to showcasing her inner beauty, Allie says it’s all about being genuine, honest, and kind to others, no matter what. “We never know what troubles others are living through, so if I can brighten someone’s day just for a moment, that’s beauty.” Her inspiration? “My mother, Jacqueline,” Allie states. “She has always helped me to keep going when things seemed tough and to remember things are all about perspective. A positive outlook will breed positive results.” BEST ADVICE RECEIVED? “Always seek improvement, because what got you here isn’t always going to get you there.” MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT? “The first networking event I went to at Express was at The Country Club of Mobile. I walked right in and thought I recognized an old friend and gave him a huge hug. Needless to say, it was not who I thought it was and we both got a big laugh out of it. We are still friends today and network often, and it’s become our running joke. We give each other a huge hug every time we see one another!”

Mustafa “Moose” Elastal HOMETOWN
J e ru sa l e m , Palestine Having lived in or visited more than 15 countries in his lifetime, Mustafa “Moose” Elastal moved to Mobile as a teen 30 years ago and was instantly enamored with the Deep South’s hospitality, delicious food, pristine beaches, and wild weather. After all, who doesn’t enjoy experiencing all four seasons in a week? Starting out in the fine dining industry, Moose was approached by the owner of one of the largest auto dealerships in Mobile in 2010, ultimately leading him to his role as a Sales and Leasing Specialist for Gulf Coast Auto Group/Audi today. “I love meeting new people, making friends, and helping customers find their perfect car,” he shares. Off the clock, Moose enjoys soccer, CrossFit training, and practicing Karate as a trained fourth-degree black belt. He’s also a doting father to three adult children (Bader, 26; Zane, 21; and Leah, 18) and is an avid supporter of the American Cancer Society. How he shines? Through kindness, compassion, laughter, and “a lot of great jokes,” Moose chuckles. As sincere as he is outgoing, this jokester quips that he draws his conviction from a Mark Twain quote: “He said, ‘All you need in life is ignorance and confidence, and then success is sure.’ Whenever tackling a new task, I think of this, and it gives me the energy to move forward,” Moose says, admitting it doesn’t always exactly work out the way he’d planned. “Once I was mistaken for a Latino in Miami, and needless to say, my Spanish was extremely rusty,” he laughs. “After this person had spoken a full conversation to me and was looking to me for an answer, all I could say was, ‘No entiendo nada,’ Which means, ‘I do not understand anything.’” Hey, at least he’s confident! Though perfectly suited for his current path, Moose admits he originally wanted to be a doctor or a pilot as a child. “As a doctor, I could help the less fortunate, and as a pilot, I could travel the world,” he ruminates. If he had to change careers today? “I would open my own restaurant, become a teacher, or open my own auto dealership.” And if he didn’t have to work at all? “I’d do charity work with kids, spend plenty of time at the beach, and travel.” Hey, you’re only 47, Moose — there’s still time to do it all! GREATEST INSPIRATIONS?
“My father, Omran Elastal, and my uncle, Said Al Adham.” FAVORITE LOCAL SPOTS? “I like Spot of Tea for brunch, The Grand Hotel for dinner, and any Starbucks for a White Chocolate Mocha.” 38 ACCESS Magazine / June-July 2021

Jaime Fairey HOMETOWN
Da phne , Al abama “You have the final word in how your story ends.” Jaime Fairey wholeheartedly embraces these words of wisdom and uses them as motivation to live her life at full speed. The Area Vice President of ONE Club Gulf Shores, Jaime is nothing short of vivacious, and with her sunny personality, what’s not to love? Her impressive title is the result of years of hard work. She says, “After graduating from The University of Alabama I was hired as a Leasing Consultant in Tuscaloosa. At the time I thought it would be temporary, but I quickly realized how much I enjoyed it, and here I am 15 years later!” Further, she adds, “The most interesting part of my job is meeting and working with individuals from all walks of life. You learn a lot about yourself and others when you work somewhere that invites people to such a beautiful destination.” After all, ONE Club Gulf Shores is a gorgeous property. Friends describe her as unafraid to tackle any challenge thrown her way, and COVID-19 certainly presented many of those. She shares, “With the restaurant and bar basically closed (except for to-go orders) and amenities closed to the condo residents, we had to start thinking outside the box.” And it worked. “We started offering delivery from the restaurant to our residents and we added condos to our vacation rentals, offering people from cities a place to come and enjoy the golf course,” she claims. Married to Ben Fairey, Jaime has lived her entire life in the Bay Area. Being compassionate and kind are her default settings, and she instinctively knows a smile or sincere interest in someone can make a difference in that person’s day. Citing her faith as the bedrock of all she does, she tells us, “I am inspired by my grandmother. She is the most honest, God-fearing woman I’ve ever met and had a great influence in the way I was raised.” Equally vested in her community, Jaime is proud to help ONE Club Gulf Shores with their fundraising efforts, saying, “We host an annual golf tournament every June to help support different charities in conjunction with The ONE Foundation. This year, we’re donating to the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, which became our newest neighbor this past year.” Consider this our RSVP, please. MOST EXCITING ADVENTURE? “Every day is an adventure. We never experience the same day twice!” FUN FACT? “I love military history and learning about the art of war, past and present.” Hair Erin Burgess, Southern Roots, 239.777.8889. / Makeup Jessica Price, Primp Lash & Beauty, 251.623.5770. Ebie Forwood HOMETOWN
M o b ile , Al abama For Physician Assistant Ebie Forwood, every day in Family Medicine at Alabama Medical Group is different — a fact she relishes as a medical professional working alongside Saraland’s renowned Dr. Howard Rubenstein. Amusingly, it was actually the accumulation of several injuries while attending college at LSU that helped lead her to the field. “I also worked closely with a physician assistant during my four years there, and that helped steer my path,” she tells us. “My best friend was the year above me in PA school at USA and she encouraged me along the way.” Tremendous in her regard for others, Ebie extends this same care and attention to her husband, Patrick Forwood, and their 3-yearold goldendoodle, Sophie. She also teaches tennis when able, having served on the LSU tennis team for four years (Geaux Tigers!). She even played with Andy Roddick and Andre Agassi when she was younger. “I wanted to be a professional tennis player when I was a kid because I loved playing tennis with my mom and sister and traveling for tournaments,” she shares. If she had to do it all over? “I love being a physician assistant and cannot imagine doing anything different, but if I had to change careers, I would stay in the medical field, but would probably go into physical therapy,” she muses. When it comes to role models, Ebie cites her parents as her greatest inspirations, adding their constant support of her and her sister helped shape them into the young women they are today. “My dad always said, ‘Have fun and try your hardest,’” Ebie says. “He tries as hard as he can in all aspects of life, and it encourages others around him to do the same. It inspires me to give my best effort in everything that I do.” Her motto? “Start each day with a grateful heart,” she relays. “I am truly so thankful for everything that I have in my life, and I just want to be able to continue to keep my patients healthy and build a family of my own one day.”
GUILTY PLEASURE? “Coke ICEEs.” MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT? “Falling on my face in high school. I had a bruised eye in my Easter pictures!”

Anna Grantham HOMETOWN
Fair hope, Alabama Turning a side hustle into a full-time job she loves, Anna’s one to watch! Losing two of her jobs to the pandemic, she created her business, Farm to Treat, as a way to earn money during the shutdown. Word spread and her holistic (and delicious) dog treats soon became the go-to for area dog owners. Now? Anna’s entrepreneurial spirit has led to owning her own business and she’s already thinking next steps, sharing her goal “is to have two more locations in New Orleans and Pensacola.” We think she’ll make it. Why? Anna’s work ethic is reflected in the best advice she’s received: “Hustle in silence. Let your success make all the noise.” Her personal mantra builds on these precepts. “If it’s what you want, it can’t be optional,” she says. “It has to be a lifestyle.” Staying motivated to be successful requires hard decisions and sacrifices — bits of wisdom that keep her on track (as do her planners). “I can’t live without them,” she shares. “I have three: personal, business, and financial.” Mom to 10-year-old Erin, Anna cites her daughter as inspiration to look forward to the future. “She believes in me even when I don’t believe in myself,” she says. But Anna’s enthusiasm also feeds itself. She makes a point of surrounding herself with things she’s passionate about, one of which is helping animals in need. “I really enjoy being a vendor at markets where the Baldwin Humane Society is a host,” she shares. “I donate 100 percent of my proceeds to them, and I also provide the dogs in the shelter with free CBD treats to help them with their anxiety.” In addition, Anna sponsors one dog each month, and when they’re adopted, sends the new owners a care package filled with goodies from Farm to Treat. Anna says she spends her free time with her daughter and dogs at Blakely State Park and enjoys cooking. “I love inviting my family over for a four-course meal I’ve prepared,” she shares. As for beauty? “Inner peace and inner beauty go hand in hand for me,” she says. “Some days I need to ‘reset’ and spend time with people and things that bring me peace. I stay grounded by practicing gratitude and honesty every day.” GUILTY PLEASURE? “Chocolate chip cookies! I don’t keep them at the house for this reason.” MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT? “I made an entire batch of promotional dog biscuits with ‘FARM TO TEAT’ stamped on them. It was all I had to serve at a market the next day!” 42 ACCESS Magazine / June-July 2021

Taylor Harvell HOMETOWN
Mo b ile , Al abama For Taylor Harvell, his job as a Loan Originator at First Federal Bank is more than a paycheck. “It’s a very rewarding feeling to know you’re helping people get into their first home or dream home,” he says. “The joy you see at the table when people you’ve helped finally close on their new home — there’s nothing like it.” While he’s relatively new to the business, his sociable manner and hard work have helped him build his client list quickly. Citing his mother, the one and only Nancy Harvell, as his biggest inspiration in life, Taylor says, “I’ve watched her go through many ups and downs in life and she always perseveres (with a positive attitude during the whole process). She now owns her own business and is absolutely killing it.” And his favorite quote? “Try not to become a man of success, but rather become a man of value,” he says. “I like this quote because it humbles me and reminds me that if I make myself valuable to others, success will come, whether it’s monetary or personal happiness.” Everyone knows the old axiom “Location, location, location” regarding real estate, but Taylor also knows it’s why he loves living in Mobile. “We are centered right on Mobile Bay,” he shares. “A quick hop over to New Orleans or the beach in Baldwin County is easy to do, even if just for the day.” But when he’s going local? “The Garage, The Stables, and The Ice Box are three of my favorite hangouts (Sorry, Mom). They have become staples for our friends to visit and meet after work.” While he is a proud supporter of local businesses, he admits his guilty pleasure is The Olive Garden. No one can be mad at that; those breadsticks are addictive! Taylor adds that working out at the gym keeps him strong physically and mentally. “It’s the place where I can let go of whatever stress is bothering me,” he claims. Taylor keeps it real when speaking of his future goals, saying, “I just hope to become kinder and happier each day. As my buddy Daniel Sullivan would say, ‘One percent better every day.’” We can’t think of a sweeter mentality. MOST EXCITING ADVENTURE? “Traveling through Europe with some of my best friends.” FUN FACT? “I am obsessed with all things space.”

Lauren Heisler HOMETOWN
C l e mso n, So u th Carolina With a rosy outlook (and complexion), Lauren Heisler is aspirational. A Skincare Consultant with Rodan + Fields, she knows “it’s okay to dream big and just go for it. In direct sales, I’m my own boss, work on my own terms, and have unlimited growth potential. I tell everyone my business is basically personal development with a paycheck.” How did she get started? She says, “Eight years ago, I met two ladies in the business while on vacation. I jumped in and never looked back. It’s worked out pretty well and I’ve grown more personally in these eight years than I could have ever imagined.” Lauren considers empowering other women and helping people feel more confident in their skin remarkable bonuses of her job, sharing, “I’ve always loved helping people, so this is another outlet to do that.” Her strong faith is also manifested in good works for the community. “I’m on the board of Ransom Ministries, which supports people in overcoming spiritual, relational, and material poverty through knowing Jesus and serving others,” she shares. “Through Home of Grace, I teach women who’ve struggled with addiction the skills they’ll need to get work when they complete their program. I also volunteer in our children’s ministry at my church.” Despite her philanthropic passions, Lance, her husband of 12 years, and their two boys (Easton, 7, and Bowden, 4) are always Lauren’s top priority. Blessed that her work allows her to choose how she spends her time, Lauren says, “Family time is the most important time, so I schedule work to accommodate that.” Serving as her biggest inspiration, Lauren says her mother is the most selfless person she knows, adding, “Being a mom myself now, I see just how much she sacrificed for us and have a new level of respect for her. She’s Superwoman to me!” We have to smile at a skincare consultant saying this, but Lauren knows beauty is more than skin-deep. She specifies, “I believe your treatment of all people, both friends and strangers, shows your true beauty. I strive to be a light to others by helping those in need and giving back to my community.” Amen, Lauren. Amen! GUILTY PLEASURE? “The Bachelor — I’ve never missed a season!” BEST ADVICE RECEIVED? “Give it to God. Whatever I’m going through, I remind myself God’s got this. When I let Him take control versus trying to do it myself, it has always worked out.” Hair Erin Burgess, Southern Roots, 239.777.8889 / Makeup Jessica Price, Primp Lash & Beauty, 251.623.5770 Dress, $450; Debra’s, 251.343.7463. Julie Jenkins HOMETOWN
M o b ile , Al abama “Conspicuously compassionate” is how we’d describe Julie Jenkins. Why? An Ultrasonographer at Southern Women’s Specialists, Julie considers her job a labor of love, saying, “It’s an extremely rewarding career. To me, it’s more than a scan — I’m seeing things that may save a patient’s life or help them address an issue so they have a better quality of life. Knowing you’re making a difference is very fulfilling.” But Julie not only helps her patients; she’s affected by them, too. “I’m in awe of how our patients both encourage and inspire me,” she shares. Julie’s husband Joel is her greatest inspiration, though. Married for 27 years, she declares, “He’s inspired me to persevere — I’ve seen him overcome seemingly impossible obstacles, all while keeping his positive attitude and sense of humor. This pushes me to display those characteristics as well.” With her cup overflowing, Julie says the family they’ve created together fills her heart. Son Cole and daughter-in-law Kaleigh have given them a grandson named Harrison, and their daughter Emily is “beautiful and free-spirited,” Julie says. Pitching in to help where she can, Julie is involved with her church and its community outreach team. “I also mentor young adult women, helping them find their purpose to achieve future goals,” she shares. Her thoughts on beauty? “I think about my parents when I think of inner beauty; they were wonderful at teaching me that beauty is an attitude, so I try to be gracious, grateful, humble, and kind.” After reading that, who couldn’t adore her? With a grateful heart, Julie says a Dale Carnegie quote rings true for her. “It isn’t what you have, or who you are, or where you are, or what you’re doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It’s what you think about it.” Julie adds, “Our society (myself included) is so caught up with finding happiness with material things and certain lifestyles that we lose focus on the value of contentment.” Her future plans? “My goal is big here — to be debt-free, financially independent, and have the option to retire at 50,” she proclaims. “I’d love to slowly travel all corners of America and then move my travels abroad. I love the connections I make meeting new people in different cultures.” A huge goal? Sure, but if anyone can do it, Julie can.
CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT? “Coffee and wine.” FAVORITE LOCAL RESTAURANTS? “Food is my love language, so I have quite a few: Flora-Bama Yacht Club, Anchor Bar & Grill, Big Beach Brewing Co., Luna’s Eat & Drink, Big Fish, Guido’s, and Local and Company.” 48 ACCESS Magazine / June-July 2021

Jeff Johnston HOMETOWN
M o b ile , Al abama Disciplined yet eccentric, Jeff Johnston is a force with which to be reckoned. A buyer for men’s shoes and staff attorney for Shoe Station by trade, discovering and inspiring the latest fashion trends is Jeff’s bread and butter. “You can be too early on a fashion trend, though,” he jokes. “If a look is selling well in Los Angeles or New York, it could take a few years (or never) before it matriculates to your customer.” However, this interest in fashion merely scrapes the surface. Heavily involved in numerous philanthropic organizations and ventures, Jeff’s rigor and passion are unrivaled. “My grandfather taught me how important a strong work ethic and integrity were for a fulfilling life,” he recalls. “As a Korean War Veteran and firefighter, he knew how to handle high-pressure situations in a calm, stoic manner.” It’s this same zeal he shares with the Bay Area community. “I volunteer with the Special Olympics, partner with United Way of Southwest Alabama on various projects, and coach a Buddy Ball team, which is a league for children with disabilities,” he shares. “Being a coach at the Special Olympics in 2019 was amazing. It’s truly inspiring watching the athletes you work with perform at their best. I will never forget the pure joy and excitement of my relay team after winning their gold medals. Their love for the sport was impressive, but even more importantly, their compassion for each other is something I aspire to embody each day.” Dependable to a fault, his friends insist whether it’s pursuing a business opportunity or embarking on a crazy adventure, Jeff is always up for a challenge. A lover of the performing arts, Jeff also enjoys partaking in theater or playing music at any opportunity, composing music and lyrics for piano and guitar in his free time. All told, Jeff says he simply wants to leave the world a better place. “Oscar Wilde said, ‘The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention,’” Jeff esteems. “I have a tendency to overanalyze issues, but this reminds me that while I am trying to make something perfect, I could be acting immediately and start positively affecting others. Where responsibility is abandoned, opportunity exists.” FUN FACT? “Demarcus Cousins and I were both members of an all-county team in high school. His basketball career was a bit better than mine!” MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT? “In high school, I went to a Halloween party in drag — women’s blouse, skirt, and slight heels. I didn’t know that the party was cancelled a few days earlier. I knocked on the door and a very perplexed looking dad opened the door and yelled to the back of the house, ‘Honey, you’ve got to come see this!’”

Laurie Koehler HOMETOWN
G a dsde n, Al abama Laurie Koehler’s childhood dream came true! Married to Dr. James Koehler, they have three children (Dawson 20; Kaitlyn 18; and Jaxon, 12), and Laurie positively radiates happiness. “When I was a child, I always wanted to be a teacher and, more than anything, a mom. I’ve always loved kids. I started babysitting when I was 10 and worked at a daycare in high school. I even went on to earn a master’s degree in Elementary and Early Childhood Education from The University of Alabama.” While working toward her degrees, Laurie simultaneously served as an assistant manager of a women’s clothing store. She later owned a men’s clothing store for several years. “Finally, the time was right for me to become a teacher,” she states. “I taught kindergarten for six years and loved it, but being a mom is by far the most rewarding job I will ever have. I feel beautiful when I’m with my family because of the love we share.” Friends describe Laurie as selfless and note her drive to take care of others. Living in Fairhope the past seven years has granted her opportunities to do just that. Within her husband’s practice, Eastern Shore Cosmetic Surgery, she’s helped with marketing, social media, and event planning, adding to her seemingly endless volunteer work. She tells us, “I’ve been involved with the Eastern Shore Medical Alliance, both on the board and working as a liaison with the Alabama Free Clinic. The last six years I’ve also been extremely active in the Junior Auxiliary of the Eastern Shore, which serves children and their families in our area. Just a few of our projects include Project Prom, Adopt-a-Grad, Little Free Pantry, Blessing Bags, and Angel Trees. My favorite is the Crown of Character Program, honoring fifth graders chosen for good character. It feels good to give back to the community and help others in need.” Laurie’s top reasons for loving the Bay Area? Being near the beach and enjoying the amazing sunsets on the Bay cap her list. “My favorite spots to watch the sunset are at Sunset Pointe at Fly Creek Marina and of course at The Bluff in Fairhope,” she shares. “We love dinners at Camellia Café and The Wash House and enjoy lunches at Sage or Dragonfly, but there are so many great restaurants downtown it’s hard to choose sometimes!” SPECIAL INTERESTS? “So many! I’m addicted to Pure Barre — I’ve taken over 600 classes! I also love photography, traveling, music, concerts, and Alabama football. Roll Tide!” GUILTY PLEASURES? “Dark chocolate and margaritas.” 52 ACCESS Magazine / June-July 2021

Jenny Kilpatrick HOMETOWN
Spa nish Fo rt, Alabama Bay Area native Jenny Kilpatrick is as hardworking and strong as they come, serving as the Healthcare Coalition Coordinator for the Southwestern District of the Alabama Department of Public Health. “It’s a mouthful,” Jenny jokes, “but I like that I never know what to expect day to day.” A licensed clinical social worker, Jenny got her start with Public Health in 2015, working as a social worker for ADPH for a few years before moving into a supervisory capacity. Today, Jenny works on emergency preparedness within Public Health — a role she took on in October of 2019, just before the pandemic hit. “We work with hospitals, nursing homes, medical providers, emergency management agencies, etc. to plan for and respond to emergency events such as COVID-19.” Needless to say, she got acquainted with her new responsibilities fast. Wife to Bobby Kilpatrick (co-owner of The Bone and Barrel and LWCC in downtown Fairhope) and mom of Livi (9), and Sawyer (7), Jenny deems herself incredibly lucky to live in such a beautiful place. “From the Bay to the beach, rivers, and farmland, the scenery here can be breathtaking,” she notes. “I try to help our children appreciate the beauty of where they live even though they may not truly appreciate it until they are older. I feel an immense amount of gratitude for the experiences our children get to have living here.” Equally thankful to share a life with Bobby, Jenny says she couldn’t be more appreciative of his support and love, insisting, “I can’t sing his praises enough.” Describing inner beauty as showing kindness and being gentle with others (especially when they’re most vulnerable), Jenny says she can’t imagine doing anything other than social work. “I clearly remember the day I decided I would go back to grad school to get my master’s degree in social work,” she recalls. “I felt such a sense of peace with that decision and was so grateful to have found my path. I’m a social worker and will always be a social worker, even though my current job is not a traditional social work role. I can’t imagine doing something that is not somehow related to social work and serving others.” Grateful in everything she does, Jenny says she strives to keep her problems in perspective, as her field has opened her eyes to the extreme struggles that others face daily. “It has helped to remind me of just how fortunate I am,” she asserts. GREATEST INSPIRATION? “Probably my grandfather. He was so strong, so kind, and lived a pretty incredible life. He was the epitome in my mind of ‘The Greatest Generation.’” BEST ADVICE RECEIVED? “One thing that has stuck with me through the years is, ‘Things will look better in the morning.’ There’s something about a good night’s sleep that helps put our problems in perspective and makes them easier to address the next day.” 54 ACCESS Magazine / June-July 2021

Marie Kline HOMETOWN
Daphne, Alabama According to Marie Kline, it’s her mom’s fault she’s so driven and successful. “She taught me to work hard, keep learning, and make sure I have a seat at the table — that my actions and voice can create change.” Marie uses that inspiration to fuel her family life and career, handling both with ease. Wait. Did we say ease? Well, she makes it look easy. Friends describe her as energetic, passionate, and a go-getter, qualities necessary for moms and executives alike. Married to Bradly, who she calls “the most supportive, loving husband,” and mom to 18-month-old Noah, Marie is a Regional Human Resource Manager for Amazon, where she’s in charge of the South Region for all HR transportation and logistics teams. No secret, COVID-19 immediately impacted Amazon’s operations. “We saw an overnight increase in ordering and began hosting hiring events around the country, but especially for those impacted by layoffs,” Marie recalls. “We committed to hire over 100,000 workers and ended up hiring over 500,000,” she proudly shares. Having lived in the Bay Area for 25 years, we’d call Marie a local. She stays involved via extensive volunteer work. “I’m a huge supporter of St. Jude’s and volunteer at Feeding the Gulf Coast food bank,” she says. But her passion is paying it forward through Amazon Cares. “We mentor young women around the country,” she details. “Helping the next generation succeed is my favorite thing to do. I’m a country girl who grew up in Robertsdale, Ala., and now I work for the largest online company in the world. You truly can achieve anything if you put in the hard work.” See why we love her? Free time is mostly spent with her family. Marie notes, “Since Noah is so young, our activities revolve around him. We just took him on his first beach trip!” But self-care is important, too. An early bird, Marie wakes before sunrise to go to Daphne Fit Body Boot Camp, saying, “It’s where I concentrate on my health and wellbeing.” Marie’s thoughts on beauty give insight into her core beliefs. “An inwardly beautiful woman possesses honesty, integrity, and a good moral code,” she asserts. This complements her favorite (and empowering) quote by Sheryl Sandberg: “We need women at all levels, including the top, to change the dynamic, reshape the conversation, to make sure women’s voices are heard and heeded, not overlooked and ignored.” We couldn’t agree more, Marie. FUN FACT? “I hate flying, but 90 percent of my job is traveling by flight.” BEST ADVICE RECEIVED? “You won’t be remembered for the things you have; you’ll be remembered for how you treated people.” 56 ACCESS Magazine / June-July 2021

M o b ile , Al abama Kind-hearted? Check. Successful? Check. Whip-smart? Check. We could do this all day regarding attorney Tom Loper, who ticks all the boxes. A Bay native and owner of Loper Law LLC, he says, “I always wanted to be an attorney. Practicing here and helping the people and community I love and care about is right for me.” Clearly an animal lover, Tom and his partner, Ric Williams, have two Labrador Retrievers (Roscoe and Stella Rose) and three cats (Muffie, Elsie, and Frankie). Asked for a fun fact about himself, Tom laughs, “We’ve personified our pets with foreign personalities. Our inside cat is British royalty, our outside cat’s in the Italian mob, Stella Rose is a Derry girl, and Roscoe is a wee English lad. I guess the fun fact is that I’m quirky and dorky, but try to look cool being that way.” We told you he ticked all the boxes. A seasoned attorney, Tom isn’t slacking off. He observes, “Practicing law is truly practicing law. Because laws and their interpretations change so much over time, attorneys are constantly having to reevaluate past guidance to stay current.” Generous with his time as well, he’s currently on the Board of Port City Pacers (which hosts the Azalea Trail Run) and is president of The University of Alabama Alumni Association. Tom is inspired by his parents, declaring, “They’ve set a great example for me, my brother, and my sister. They were always there for us. When I wanted to play soccer after years of baseball, my dad jumped in, learned the sport, and started coaching. My mom, an educator, ensured we were in good schools and that we were always learning. During the summer, she would take us to different area museums and venues so the learning never stopped.” Most important? “Being nice to everyone,” Tom shares. “You never know what someone is going through. Sometimes just smiling or saying ‘Hello’ can make a person’s day.” Finally, a message from Tom for whomever needs to hear it: “I want people to know I’m always here if anyone, and I mean anyone, needs to talk. Mental health is one of the most poorly addressed issues in our community, and too many people aren’t getting the help they need. If someone simply listening can help another person out, I’m here to be that someone.” BEST ADVICE RECEIVED? “‘Don’t call it luck if you’re prepared to take advantage of opportunities when they arise.’ I try to be ready for when new opportunities appear.” CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT? “Physical exercise. Be it running, weights, CrossFit, or swimming, I need a high level of activity in my life.” 58 ACCESS Magazine / June-July 2021

Madelynn Mann HOMETOWN
Re d Oa k, Iowa
A real spitfire, Madelynn Mann has lofty aspirations. “I want to be a millionaire,” she states, which isn’t outside the realm of possibilities — we’re all about speaking things into existence! Having grown Pieces Boutique in Gulf Shores from a small pop-up she once ran out of the trunk of her car to the booming six-figure business it is today, Madelynn’s success over the last three years is staggering. “I’m living the dream every day, traveling, making clients feel their best, and meeting new people daily,” she beams. With the pandemic partially to thank for the boutique’s growth, Madelynn says, “In a weird way, it helped my business thrive. My online sales were booming, giving me the opportunity to move to a bigger and better location. I couldn’t be more appreciative of my clients.” Further involved in the Gulf Shores Chamber of Commerce, Madelynn is a true hard worker — a trait she shares with her fiancé, Earle Long IV. “He has inspired me to work hard and to never take no for an answer,” she says, adding her mother raised her to keep her nose to the grindstone and to “keep a good attitude even when things are going bad.” Even as a child, Madelynn dreamed of being a businesswoman. “I’m so proud of how far I’ve come, the relationships I’ve made, and how much I’ve learned and grown as a person,” she shares. Having moved to the area from Iowa only eight short years ago, Madelynn says she’s continually impressed by the Bay Area’s Southern hospitality, beach vibe, and smalltown feel. “We love to go out on the boat, hit happy hour with friends, and listen to music at The Flora-Bama,” she details. “We also dig Fisher’s Upstairs at Orange Beach Marina, Playa, and The Gulf.” Her mantra? “Buy now, cry later!” Yas, queen! Yas!
FUN FACT? “I can read people from a mile away based on body language.” MOST EXCITING ADVENTURE? “Taking a private plane to Lanai, Hawai’i.”

Brandon Marcus HOMETOWN
M o b ile , Al abama “I’ve lived in the Bay Area on and off all my life,” shares Mobile native Brandon Marcus, owner of The Studio in Daphne. “I grew up here, moved away when I was 12, and came back when I transferred to South from The University of Alabama.” A Type A almost to a fault, Brandon jokes that his friends would likely describe him as a “sarcastic perfectionist,” though equally passionate and ambitious. Having opened The Studio as an educational performing arts center for kids and teens in 2013, it’s safe to say they hit the mark, especially given his students’ frequent top placements in state, regional, and national competitions. “I knew early on I wanted to be in a career that helped others, but wasn’t sure where I’d land,” Brandon admits. “Before my dad passed, he wrote a list of ‘rules’ for me to live by. The last one says, ‘Never give up! Never!’ Those four words have helped me through so many tough times.” Joking that “all that’s missing is the ring and the ceremony,” Brandon isn’t hitched quite yet, but looks to be in the near future to his beau, Joseph. For now, he’s comforted by his 4-year-old pup, Bailey, whom Brandon lovingly insists “believes he’s 100 percent human.” Having volunteered on the national level with several organizations and recently becoming more involved with local politics, Brandon also heads up the push to engage young voters in the area, striving to up voter turnout and overall political education as he goes. When able, Brandon loves a quick getaway to Walt Disney World (which he visits multiple times a year) and enjoys kayaking, hiking, and checking out new places. His most exciting adventure? “Without saying anything too incriminating, I once spent a few hours exploring an abandoned amusement park outside of a major Southern city,” he confesses. Moving forward, Brandon says he dreams of having a performing arts high school in the area — something he feels is desperately needed for today’s youth. “Imagine the high school from Fame, but set on Mobile Bay,” he romanticizes. “Regardless of their age, everyone has something they can teach you if you just listen.” Perhaps we’ve encountered your next venture, Brandon? GUILTY PLEASURE? “Oreos are absolutely my guilty pleasure and have been banned from my house.” BEST ADVICE RECEIVED? “I grew up being told, ‘Know your worth and accept nothing less.’ It wasn’t until I recently started living by this statement that I realized how important self-worth really is.” 62 ACCESS Magazine / June-July 2021

Tundy McDonald HOMETOWN
M o b ile , Al abama A lifelong Mobilian, BDC Director for Gulf Coast Auto Group Tundy McDonald is a true asset, aptly named based on her expressive, fun-loving nature and desire to see others succeed. A “what you see is what you get” kind of gal, one never has to wonder how Tundy feels on an issue or where she stands, as she’s sure to give her honest opinion or sage advice on the matter, no judgement involved. Stressed? Confused? Need a listening ear or a sounding board? Just ask Tundy. Actively involved in Living Word Christian Center International Ministries, Tundy also helps facilitate virtual group sessions focused on spiritual growth and development for young adults and teens weekly. “It is my relationship with God that helps me walk in the fullness of who I am and emanate inner beauty,” she attests. “I can’t live without a relationship with Him.” Gorgeous inside and out, Tundy is mother to 3-year-old Aniya and cites motherhood as her greatest endeavor and achievement. “She brings so much joy, pleasure, and fun to my life,” Tundy beams. “There is never a dull moment with Princess Aniya!” Inspired by her own mother, Mary Banks, Tundy attributes her successes as a parent to her unwavering guidance. “She is the strongest, wisest, and most insightful woman I know,” she shares. “Her love, encouragement, and support have been instrumental in helping me become the woman I am today.” A true wordsmith, Tundy says she’s dreamed of a writing career since early childhood, noting that if she didn’t have to work, she’d spend all her time penning tales and authoring books. “I knew that I had a story to tell and that my story would impact someone else’s life journey,” she asserts. “I have been journaling since I was 6 years old and one of my favorite scents is the smell of library books! I’d love to become a published author and provide my daughter with opportunities to see the world.” Positively self-defined, Tundy says overall she takes her base cues from Oscar Wilde’s advice on being yourself, as everyone else is already taken. “It is when we walk in the authenticity of who we are that we are able to achieve our divine purpose and make the greatest impact on humanity,” she stresses. We think everyone could use a Tundy on their team! GUILTY PLEASURE? “I love looking up words and dissecting them to find out their true meanings, histories, and origins.” MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT? “I was talking to a guy that I liked, and I missed a step while walking. I fell down in the dirt and rolled, and remember thinking, ‘How is it that I am on the ground?’ It was hilarious!” 64 ACCESS Magazine / June-July 2021

Mary Thomas MacKinnon HOMETOWN
M o b ile , Al abama Little girls everywhere love their tutus and ballet classes, but achieving the title of professional ballerina takes a dedication to the art form few possess. Mary Thomas MacKinnon is one of them. A member of the New York City Ballet, she was offered one of their coveted contracts when she was just 18. She tells us, “I fell in love with the art of ballet at 3 years old — my mother was my first teacher.” With a list of accomplishments too long to list here, Mary Thomas remains humble, saying, “I was fortunate enough for ballet to have chosen me. It’s a profession that’s just too difficult if you’re not chosen.” We know it’s more than being chosen, though, with her average day consisting of 8-10 hours of rehearsals and training with evening performances during the season. New York City was immediately shut down by the pandemic. Mary Thomas shares, “Fortunately, I was already home with my family. It was difficult not performing, but I treasure the time I was able to spend with them.” During the shutdown, she learned tennis when she wasn’t maintaining her skills as a ballerina in her family’s library-turneddance studio. Watching her on stage, no one would guess she grew up on her family’s farm climbing trees and hunting with her brothers. “I was quite the tomboy, which surprises many in the ballet world,” she laughs. Friends describe her as kindhearted, loyal, and possessing a great sense of humor, all of which she ascribes to her parents, who continually inspire her. “They are so strong and selfless and have helped me follow my dreams,” she says. “I strive to be a fraction as good as they are when I’m a parent one day.” And her take on beauty? A Helen Keller quote: “‘The best, most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched; they must be felt with the heart.’ Outer beauty attracts, but inner beauty captivates. To me, beauty is the wisdom and time you take to help another soul.” Mary Thomas may no longer live here, but this Bay Area native is always welcome home.
GUILTY PLEASURE? “Binge watching The Office while eating mint chocolate chip ice cream.” MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT? “Some people think falling on stage is embarrassing. I’ve fallen many times in front of thousands of people. Honestly? I start laughing. If anything, it shows you’re truly going for it.” Hair Brandi Hoover, Sanctuary Salon, 251.990.4779. / Makeup Courtney Matthews Makeup Artistry, youneedblush2020@gmail.com. Raven S. Miller HOMETOWN
H attie sb u rg , Miss is sipp i Confidence emanates from Raven Miller, and it’s well-earned. Saying the best advice doesn’t necessarily come from others, she adds, “Only you know your capabilities and limitations, so listen to yourself, know what your goal is, and be willing to work hard to attain it.” See what we mean? A Realtor with Local Property, Inc., Raven is successful because she knows it isn’t as glamorous as many people think. “Showing pretty homes to prospective buyers is only a tiny percentage of what I do,” she states. “I can work from anywhere, but I’m never not working.” But there’s more to Raven than her career. “Traveling is essential to me; I can work long hours for months, but if I’m not able to stop at some point and jump on a plane, I start to forget why I work so hard,” she says. From Rhode Island to California and Canada to Austria, she’s been there. “The coolest and most bizarre was definitely Cuba,” she shares. “It’s like the land that time forgot. The buildings, furniture, fixtures — everything is still in place from their original installment. The preservation is remarkable!” Raven’s love of travel offers her a different perspective on life here. Her take? “Whenever I arrive home, I realize how protected we are here,” she says. “Other places hold lots of harshness and rigidness. I’ve noticed Southerners are a bit freer. We tend to make our own rules and I really like that.” Her favorite local places are mostly found outdoors. “I like going for runs at Fairhope Pier and Bayfront Park, and even the restaurants I love (Sunset Pointe and Bayside Grill at The Grand Hotel) show I’m definitely in it for the waterside views,” she tells us. This dovetails with her love of sailing. “I’ve always thought sailboats were beautiful, but after my first sail, I was hooked,” she shares. “Locally, I sail out of Fairhope Yacht Club, but I have an upcoming trip to Maine and can’t wait to hop aboard a sailboat there!” We wish Raven fair winds and following seas as she continues her journeys.
FAVORITE QUOTE? “Winston Churchill: ‘I never worry about action, but only inaction.’ I go after what I want. If I fail, or it doesn’t want me back, then I don’t have to live with never knowing.” MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT? “I’m fairly good at walking in heels, so I don’t have any public falls to report.”

Chad Nassar HOMETOWN
M o b ile , Al abama Ambitious, adventurous, and caring, Realtor Chad Nassar of Remax says he was inspired to enter real estate by his dad, whom Chad says worked on the development side of the business years ago. “My father is a kind, thoughtful, generous, and honest man,” Chad dotes. “He is to thank for much of who I am as a person.” Feeling real estate would also be the right fit for him (given his family’s business-oriented and real estate-driven nature), Chad took the necessary steps to acquire his license, and says ever since, his life has changed for the better. Citing his duality as an agent and neighbor as his “leg up” in today’s quick-paced market, he jokes, “After all, if you’re good at something, never do it for free.” A lover of exotic sports cars (and owning his own exotics after being in the business, which he says “has its perks”), sports, grilling, working out, and fishing, Chad also enjoys traveling and volunteering his extra time to help out friends and family — of which there’s a lot. One of two boys with six sisters, Chad jokes his childhood was “very eventful,” adding, “My sisters are all in nursing now and my brother is an engineer. We own a homebuilding company together called Nassar Building and Design through which we design and build custom homes.” Less obvious, Chad is a self-defined “cat person,” enjoys trying out new steakhouses, and is obsessed with Harry Potter. Who knew? Perfectly suited to his job, Chad admits as a child he actually wanted to become a professional football player one day. “Football is big in our family,” he details, laughing that despite the lofty aspirations of his youth, if he had to change careers today, he’d opt for a less physical occupation as a stockbroker. If he didn’t have to work at all? “I’d spend all my time with my family traveling and trying new things together,” he shares. Steeped in his career and enthralled by the opportunity to meet and help new people every day, Chad says his ultimate goal is to live each day to the fullest, be successful in his job, stay healthy, and take care of his loved ones. His advice? “Be willing to eat, sleep, and breathe the business you’re in. Success doesn’t sleep, and it doesn’t wait for anyone, so surround yourself with the smartest people you can and learn from them.” Sounds like someone’s on their way to the top! MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT? “It’d be when I got a haircut by my brother who was ‘trying out his haircutting skills.’” CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT? “My cell phone!”

Ashley M. O’Brien HOMETOWN
N orth Mo b ile , Alabama Ashley O’ Brien makes it look easy. From her career as a Wealth Management Specialist at Merrill Lynch Wealth Management to a myriad of philanthropical works and (most importantly) being a mom, she says, “My passion is for helping others and being actively involved in my community.” And her work lets her do just that. “Everyone’s story is different,” she states. “It’s my job to uncover a person or family’s dreams and what they want their story to be. Making that dream a reality is my favorite aspect of my job, as well as building the relationship and trust between myself and the clients. They truly become my family.” Ashley’s success is built on more than her stellar skillset. Her takeaway? “It’s not just about how much you know; it’s how much you care.” Mom to 8-year-old Cooper, she enjoys her time with him, whether it’s riding bikes to Mo’ Bay Beignet Co. or fishing and boating together on Dauphin Island. Ashley enthusiastically cites her mother as her biggest influence. “To know her is to love her,” she says. “Through every up and down in my life, she’s held my hand, listened to me, and taught me that hard work, dedication, and persistence pay off. In middle school, I had a vision we’d one day be a team called ‘The Richardson Group.’ Today, we are that team I envisioned.” We’re possibly a little teary with that sweet testimonial. Ashley hopes to positively affect everyone she meets. “Whether it’s a smile and a wave, staying active in local charities, or helping our clients achieve their financial goals, I’m here for it,” she says, and she means it. In addition to nonprofits like Dance Without Limits and Feeding the Gulf Coast, she holds United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Mobile close to her heart. “I participate through Miles for SMILES,” she shares. “Last year, my team raised over $4,000 in support of Camp SMILE. I also serve dinner on Family Night at the camp, as well as sponsor UCP’s annual Food and Folly fundraiser.” We think Ashley’s got this “inner beauty” thing down pat, friends.
HOBBIES? “In my spare time, you can find me running through Midtown or on Dauphin Island. I’m currently training for the Chicago Marathon in October 2021.” PERSONAL MANTRA? “‘Climb the mountain.’ I’ve found it’s in the valleys that we truly grow. Once we climb the mountain, there’s always another valley. You’re never truly to the top!”

Juan Ortega HOMETOWN
M o n tg o m e ry, Alabama Juan Ortega’s dad offered him what we think is stellar advice when he was thinking about attending law school, saying, “Well, I suggest if that’s what you want to do, then you should do something about it.” Juan adds, “He meant that if I want something, I need to take care of it myself because no one else is going to give me anything.” We’re texting that one to our own children. Juan listened (fast-forward to today), and here he is, a seasoned attorney and shareholder at Dentons Sirote PC. Starting his career as a prosecutor in the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office, he tells us, “After three and half years, I went into private practice and have continued to use the skills I learned in the courtroom in other areas of the law.” The pandemic left the legal community reeling. Juan shares, “Litigation came to a halt at the beginning of COVID-19 and has been slowly returning. I’d collaborated with people in my firm’s other offices before, so working remotely wasn’t that hard.” Even working via computer, the most surprising takeaway for him is “the vast amount of paper it takes to live in a ‘paperless world.’” ACCESS affirms this ruling. It’s been 22 years since Juan moved to the Bay Area, and every day he appreciates how fortunate all of us are to call it home. “The proximity to water, the beaches, Mardi Gras, and all the different events throughout the year like LoDa ArtWalk and The Chili Cook-Off make this area an ideal place to live,” he says. Health-minded, Juan says keeping fit is also important. He loves running and cycling, as well as a bit of competition, noting, “If the mood strikes, I may participate in a local road race or triathlon.” Father to three daughters (Ann Louise, 19; Jane, 16; and Francie, 13), Juan thinks it’s not any one person who’s inspired him the most, explaining, “My faith plays a large role in my life and my parents have been a big inspiration, each for different reasons.” But motivation? He smiles, “That’s an easy one. My daughters — they are the reason I get up in the morning.” FUN FACT? “I have actually jumped off a bridge.” MOST EXCITING ADVENTURE? “I’m still on it — it’s called life.”

Daniel M. Palmier HOMETOWN
Mia m i , Florida Dan Palmier is a real mover and shaker, having not only founded national commercial real estate financier UC Funds, but the ONE Club brand and the ONE Foundation as well — the three of which he also heads up as CEO. “Every day is unique dealing with different deals and challenges, and I work with some of the finest and most diligent people in the world,” Dan shares, adding, “The most important thing in business and life is people. If you are able to surround yourself with good people that have common lofty goals and culture, great things can happen.” Having started ONE Foundation (formerly known as The Palmier Foundation) some years ago to help collect and organize resources to help others locally and around the world, Dan says ONE Foundation’s focus is serving others in ways that will last a lifetime. “We have been building churches and schools in India; putting water wells in villages of Africa, Haiti, and Belize; and more,” Dan shares. “Locally we support widows, communities in need, victims of natural disasters, and animals.” The reason? “Philanthropy and sharing are blessings,” Dan asserts. “I believe that everything I have been blessed with comes from God or the ONE. I was blessed with so much opportunity and ability to create. It’s an honor and a duty to help our fellow man in need. There’s never a bad time to do the right thing.” Citing his own family as the rock upon which he built his foundation, Dan draws his inspiration and giving spirit from his phenomenal grandmother, “Nanni.” “Nanni was a wonderful mentor,” he recalls. Widowed in her early 30s with three young children, Dan says Nanni had an “against all odds” free market work ethic, a deep love of Christ, and a tireless determination for helping others. “After my grandfather passed, she prayed and was given the strength to create her own business, raise our family without government intervention, and help many others in need,” Dan beams. “Each week, Nanni would say she was going to take care of the ‘old people,’ meaning she was responsible for their socialization and hair care. These ‘old folk’ were laymen and religious nuns that were 65 to 70-ish years of age, while Nanni was over 90 years old! I love my Nanni!” With moxie like that, how could you not? HOW DID IT ALL START? “I graduated undergrad from Notre Dame and then earned my CPA while doing graduate school at NYU at night, all while working on Wall Street. I can’t believe there were only 24 hours in a day!” FAVORITE QUOTES? “I have several: ‘Failure is not an option,’ ‘Never give up,’ ‘Strive for perfection and settle for excellence,’ and ‘Be allergic to average.’”

Dean Parker HOMETOWN
Dow ningtown, Pe n n sy l va n i a Parker Capital Chairman and CEO Dean Parker has got it goin’ on, literally. Investing daily in the next generation of leaders and training them as tomorrow’s CEOs, Dean travels as a public speaker and notable “thought leader” in the world of economics, startup culture, venture capital, technology, politics, faith, and family. Priding himself on having worked his way to the top from his humble beginnings as a car salesman, Dean is thankful for the impact he’s able to have on his team members today. “It’s about making this great big world a smaller place through conversations and collaboration, and if you’re doing it right, it never gets old,” he says. Describing inner beauty as one’s ability to choose love and respect over all else, Dean cites Jesus Christ as his greatest inspiration and strives to emulate His love with his own children (Jody, 21; Trey, 19; Lauren, 15; and Zachary, 13). “Dreaming big, striving for more innovation, entrepreneurship, faith, and family really can’t be separated,” Dean shares. “It’s not about getting to the top the quickest. It’s about sharing experiences. It’s about leaving a legacy and light on the world for all to see. It’s about family and leaving the world a better place for them.” “Giving quietly” to numerous local charities and serving on various local boards, Dean further mirrors his maker by living by the greatest advice he was ever given: “Give to others more than you take.” Not surprisingly, Dean says if he had to change careers today, he’d be a pastor — a far cry from his childhood aspirations of becoming president of the United States! “The most exciting adventure of my life was serving as the National Finance Chairman of the 2016 Ben Carson presidential campaign,” he states. Talk about intense! Clearly driven, generous, and kindhearted, it’s no wonder Dean’s made it to the top. Add in some good old-fashioned grit and hustle, and you’ve got him pegged. “We are constrained only by the limits of our own imagination and our willingness to persevere in service of accomplishing the impossible,” he insists. “We must dream big.” Inspiringly philosophical and as down-to-earth as they come, Dean leaves us with sound parting advice: “You meet the same people on the way up as the way down, so love and respect all.” FUN FACT? “I have an honorary Doctorate in Business from my alma mater, Liberty University.” IF HE DIDN’T HAVE TO WORK? “I’d help make people’s dreams come true.”

Rebecca Pickett HOMETOWN
Fre d e r i c k s b urg, Virginia Positively radiating energy and happiness, Rebecca Pickett is a dynamo. Married to Kevin, they joined their families and share Alexa (20), Clark (17), and Noah (14). Treatment Coordinator and Office Manager at Pickett Orthodontics, she and Kevin work together to bring smiles to their patients’ faces, but it’s more than a job, she asserts. “When we celebrate a patient’s new smile or a special milestone for a team member, we are also blessed with being a part of that journey,” she says. Rebecca’s enthusiasm for helping others is evident in all she does. At work, she delights in getting to know patients and watching their self-esteem (and smiles) evolve during treatment. Further? She shares, “We’re so proud to work with Alabama Baptist Children’s Home to provide orthodontic treatment to children who don’t have a birth family to do this for them. This organization is so special and so are the children that they serve.” Who inspires her? Rebecca emphatically replies, “My sweet Momma! She worked hard to provide for me and I never doubted her love. She’s my stability, my encourager, and will be gritty-honest with me. I’m fortunate to be on the receiving end of her heart.” It was her mother who taught her that inner beauty “stems from a sense of empathy and compassion,” she states. “This starts with determining what you need to work on personally, your passion, and what’s truly important to you. When we’re happy with those things, we’re in a place that aligns with serving others.” Rebecca adores her life here, saying, “I’ve always appreciated the genuine nature of the people of the of the Bay Area. Southern charm is a real thing, and once I experienced that, I didn’t want to leave!” Her hopes for the future? “I already feel very fortunate, so I couldn’t dream of anything better,” she answers. “I want to see our children continue to find their purpose and all that God has in store for them.” Well said, Rebecca!
BEST ADVICE RECEIVED? “I was a child when my great-grandfather (who was 101 at the time) told me, ‘There ain’t no time like the present.’ He was an English teacher and I thought it was so odd that he said ‘ain’t,’ but the sentiment was spot-on!” GUILTY PLEASURE? “The Ashiatsu massage at The Grand Hotel. I feel bad taking ‘me’ time, but it is such a needed recharge!” Hair Brandi Hoover, Sanctuary Salon, 251.990.4779. / Makeup Jessica Price, Primp Lash & Beauty, 251.623.5770. Max Rogers, MD HOMETOWN
M o b ile , Al abama Born and raised in Mobile, Alabama, Dr. Max Rogers of Bay Area Physicians for Women jokes he’s lived here all his life “minus 20 years for college, seven years in the U.S. Marine Corps, medical school, and residency.” An OB/GYN by trade, Dr. Rogers says the most fascinating aspect of his day-today grind is the opportunity to interact with individuals from absolutely every walk of life, “and to hopefully, by the grace of God, improve their lives in some small measure,” he shares. Working in a field dedicated to serving women comes easy to Dr. Rogers, especially as husband to wife Mandy and father to five (you heard that right — five!) daughters: Mary Lacey, Simms, Charlotte, Liza, and Peirson. His personal mantra? “Yes, Dear!” Why? “I have spent the majority of my life with six women, so I seem to say it a lot!” he laughs, adding he also has a slew of grandchildren to add to the mix. Funnily enough, before becoming a “girl dad” and physician, Dr. Rogers was once a hardcore fighter pilot flying FA-18 Hornets for the Marine Corps. Talk about opposite ends of the spectrum! Attributing his drive and goal-oriented nature to his time served in the military, Dr. Rogers says he was equally blessed to have had parents and family who encouraged and offered him every opportunity to succeed and excel. With their support as a guiding light, Dr. Rogers gives his all in his philanthropic endeavors, noting that for the last four years he’s served the citizens of Alabama as a member (and most recently as Vice Chairman) of the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners. “I have also served the physicians in the state as a Censor for the Medical Association for the State of Alabama and currently serve on the board for the Mobile County Health Department, as well as the board for the Alabama Department of Public Health,” he details. His takeaway? “There truly seems to be no end or limit to the resiliency of dedicated individuals serving our city, our county, and our state,” he says. BEST ADVICE RECEIVED? “Say what you mean, mean what you say, and do what you promise.” HOPES AND GOALS FOR THE FUTURE? “That’s the hardest question of all. My cup runneth over.”

Holly Ryan HOMETOWN
Fair hope, Alabama Holly Ryan radiates compassion in everything she does. As the Director for Business Development and Provider Relations at USA Health Mitchell Cancer Institute, this attribute serves her well. Describing the best part of her job, she says, “Cancer treatment is continuously evolving at a rapid pace; to be part of something that can positively impact someone’s life and the lives of their loved ones is an indescribable experience.” A favorite pastime? “Early morning walks with my husband, David,” she shares. They have a daughter (Kennedy, 20), and Holly has raised her using wisdom she learned from her biggest inspiration: her parents. “Growing up, my mom often told me, ‘Don’t hate anyone — it will poison your soul, not the other person’s,’” she says. Described by close friends as trustworthy and a good listener, she laughs, “They know I’m a ‘bury the dead body in the backyard’ kinda girl, but seriously, I aspire to love unconditionally. With age and experience, I try to offer advice without judgment — believe me, I have been there and done that!” Holly values her life here, telling us, “There’s so much to enjoy, but the overall easy lifestyle is what I treasure the most about our little piece of the world.” Further, “My husband and I enjoy shopping local and supporting Fairhope’s small business owners,” she says. “For shopping, there’s East Bay Clothiers, CK Collection, JJ Eyes, Sadie’s, and 7 South, and we love to gather with friends at The Hope Farm, Camellia Café, Red or White, and especially the fire pits and 1847 Bar at The Grand Hotel.” Considering beauty, Holly shares, “I try to be grateful for the blessings I’m given, one of which is being part of a group of women who meet weekly. This experience allows me to grow and become a better listener, more sympathetic and empathetic, and truly reflect and be mindful of what matters most.” We couldn’t have described it better, Holly.
CHILDHOOD DREAM JOB? “I always wanted to be a host on The Today Show. That would still be a dream job today. I could definitely drink wine and chat with Hoda Kotb every day.” EMBARRASSING MOMENT? “Recently, I was on a Zoom call and my dogs started barking incessantly. I thought I muted the meeting. Doing the ‘mom’ scream (the crazy one at the top of my lungs), I shouted ‘Shut up!’ and I heard someone on the other end of the call asking, ‘Are you okay?’”

Mohannad + Isabella Sahyouni HOMETOWN
Sa l wa , Ku wait + Od e s s a , Ukra i ne A long way from his hometown in Kuwait (think 7,400 miles), Jerusalem Café owner Mohannad Sahyouni found his way to the Deep South 18 years ago and instantly fell in love with the Bay Area’s beaches, waterways, and people. A natural social butterfly, Mohannad originally came to Mobile to attend college, working as the manager for Jerusalem Café until the opportunity arose to purchase it. “I love meeting new people and seeing them enjoy good food,” he says, adding that his desire to engage with everyone he meets lets his personality shine. “You have to enjoy life while you can,” he emphasizes. Together with his wife, Isabella (who was raised in Cullman, Ala., despite being born in Ukraine), Mohannad says they’re always down to hit favorite local spots like POST, Domke Market, Pour Baby, The Cheese Cottage, Squid Ink, and Noja, and are definitely no strangers to a good time — or a good cause. Philanthropically, the Sahyounis are involved with Fuse Project and love any opportunity to be surrounded by others. “Why wait for time when time doesn’t wait for you?” Isabella ponders. “At the end of the day, all you’ve got is now.” Undoubtedly outgoing, Mohannad enjoys boating, wakeboarding, and painting in his free time and is also an avid CrossFitter, divulging he’d spend all his time traveling and working out if it were up to him. As for Isabella? “I love dogs, reading, and anything outdoors.” Interestingly, as a child, Mohannad dreamed of a career in fashion design “because the right style reflects your personality.” (That explains the hair gel obsession). If he could do it all over? “I’d definitely go into design,” he tells. When it comes to a personal mantra, Mohannad is all about hard lessons. “You learn more from failure than success,” he declares. “I’ve learned a lot from past mistakes I’ve made in my life.” An exceptionally embarrassing one? “I almost left the house one time with the hanger still on my dress shirt,” he laughs. Ever the supportive spouse, Mohannad’s ultimate focus is on the life he’s making with Isabella, remarking, “I just hope to build a safe and secure future for my wife and myself.” MOHANNAD’S BIGGEST INSPIRATION? “My mother.” ISABELLA’S GUILTY PLEASURE? “Wine!” Hair Erin Burgess, Southern Roots, 239.777.8889 / Makeup Jessica Price, Primp Lash & Beauty, 251.623.5770 Dress, $350; The Mix, 251.217.2916. Emily Scott HOMETOWN
B i rm ing ha m , Alabama A recent transplant from Birmingham, Emily Scott wasted no time in making her mark on the Bay Area, having jumped head-first into the local business pool to open Studio Style in April of 2020. “It’s literally me in a brand,” Emily jokes, adding she always wanted to own her own boutique. “I knew it from the time I was a little girl,” she details, “so when the COVID shutdown happened, I decided to take a leap of faith and launch it. My background is in fashion and fitness — two of the things I love the most in life. I knew I had a niche. I knew I could choose products that women needed in their lives and would love wearing, so I started small and organically grew the company over the past year.” Still growing, Emily is so thankful for the community’s resounding support. Passionate about what she does, Emily says she loves the transformational effects of fitness, both mentally and physically, and enjoys the freedom of expression and confidence boost good fashion provides. Combine the two, and you get Studio Style. “It’s a small way to celebrate your individuality,” Emily shares. “Making money is rewarding but sharing what you love to enhance other people’s lives is even more satisfying.” With her sights set on growing her online store (which already ships orders across the U.S.), Emily says she plans to continue to fill her orders in-house so she can touch, feel, and ensure product quality. “I also hope to have a small storefront or showroom so I can help customers in person,” she notes. Chock-full of wisdom, Emily believes life is not about what happens to you, but what you do with it. “Strive to minimize your obstacles and maximize your hopes, dreams, and potential,” she advises. “Sometimes that requires being your own cheerleader.” Equally vested in the philanthropy sector, Emily donates to Wellhouse, an organization that helps to rescue and restore victims of human trafficking by offering them hope and investing in them through healing and recuperative programs. “To me, that’s inner beauty,” she insists. “It emanates through a peaceful and kind spirit and shows in how you treat others.” BEST ADVICE RECEIVED? “Remember: God is your source, not people.” HOBBIES? “Tennis, Pure Barre, Pilates, eating out, laying out on the beach, and shopping.” Hair Erin Burgess, Southern Roots, 239.777.8889. / Makeup Courtney Matthews Makeup Artistry, youneedblush2020@gmail.com Studio Style, ShopStudioStyle.com.

Sharon Stevens HOMETOWN
Fair hope, Alabama Enthusiasm fuels Sharon Stevens in everything she does, and she does everything. From being a wife and mother to her careers as a trauma nurse and automotive executive, she also manages to be an avid golfer and poker player. We never ask women how they do it all, but make an exception for Sharon, whose energy is boundless. President of Ikon Automotive and Vice President at Chuck Stevens Automotive, she says, “I take nothing in my life for granted, so I live it to the fullest. Once I accepted that life doesn’t have to be perfect to be amazing, it all clicked.” Licensed as a trauma nurse in Florida, Alabama, and Louisiana, Sharon left nursing behind to start a new career in the automobile business 11 years ago. It turns out she excels in this line of work as well, though she gives credit to the people she works with, telling us, “The most interesting aspect of my job is managing over 100 employees from all walks of life — they are our strength.” Moreover, she understands “how important it is to get the right people in the right places within your organization to ensure success.” Married to Chuck Stevens on the coolest wedding date we’ve ever seen — 11/11/11 — she has two adult children, Nicole Russell and Vernon “Tripp” Pugh III. One half of a power couple that believes in helping others, Sharon says her greatest inspiration is her husband. “Chuck really is my everything,” she declares, adding, “Chuck and I focus on improving the quality of life in Baldwin County. Whether it’s the No-Kill North Baldwin Animal Shelter, the North Baldwin Infirmary Foundation, or any needs from students to teacher appreciation, we do everything we can to support our local communities.” Enjoying everything the Bay Area has to offer, she says, “I love the weather, water, and of course, the golf courses. I maintain an 8 handicap and am a four-time Ladies Champion at Steelwood Country Club. I’m also a semi-professional poker player.” What? She grins, sharing, “I even won a five-figure pot in one hand of Texas hold ‘em!” Sharon considers confidence beautiful, and we couldn’t agree more.

Sara Thomas HOMETOWN
Fair hope, Alabama On the go and going places, Sara Thomas is stylish with a capital “S.” Sales Manager at SOHO Event Rentals, she treasures her job, saying, “At first, I was surprised it’s such a team effort to create amazing events. Now I know that when great vendors work together, we can create magic for our clients!” Getting her start in the industry as an assistant planner at Noble Events, she still finds the best part of her job to be “the clients I have the privilege to meet and making each event I work on unique.” A Fairhope native, Sara’s friends describe her as loyal, supportive, stylish, and fun. We agree on all counts; her inner beauty emanates in her kind treatment of everyone she meets. And she likes helping people, be it a client or a beloved community institution. She shares, “I helped facilitate my father’s company sponsoring the upkeep costs of roofing for the Ronald McDonald House in Mobile and I collect donations for the house as well.” See? Heart of gold, this one. Along with her sweet dogs, Lucy and Leo, Sara loves “the beaches and seafood” so readily available to the Bay Area. Going out? She’s got recommendations. “I like Master Joe’s, Provision, McSharry’s Irish Pub, Tamara’s Downtown, The Ravenite Pizzeria, and I’m grateful to be able to watch the sunset at The Bluff,” she lists. Sara’s hobbies keep her busy in her free time. She says, “I love traveling, spending time with family, going to the beach or on the boat, dinner with friends, watching Alabama football in the fall (Roll Tide!), live music, and interior design.” Did we mention her sense of humor? An embarrassing moment, Sara confesses, was “walking down the aisle in my brother and sister-in-law’s wedding. I rolled my ankle and made a really loud yelp of pain. We still laugh about it to this day.” Her favorite quote reflects her personality. “‘We rise by lifting others.’ I fully believe kindness and compassion can change the world, making us better people in return,” she tells us. Sara has learned “to strive for progress, not perfection,” a much-needed reminder that we’re all doing the best we can. In the future, she claims, “I hope to continue learning and growing in my career — maybe one day own my own business!” CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT? “Wine and Target.” DREAM LIFE? “I would travel the world and adopt so many dogs!”

Daryl Trawick + Oksana Dvygan HOMETOWN Mo bile, Ala ba ma + Kh e rs on , U k rai n e
Daryl Trawick and Oksana Dvygan’s love for each other is obvious. Professing they’re each other’s best friends, Daryl laughs, “She’s my beauty and I’m her beast!” Did we mention a great sense of humor? President and CEO of Trawick International Holdings, Daryl started his company in his house in 1998 and is grateful for the opportunity to work with the best. “My business has experienced ups and downs, but it’s never been bigger or more successful than today,” he says. “I get to work with amazingly talented people who are all experts in their fields, whether it’s insurance or support services.” And Oksana? “I’m an avid homemaker and also a part-time ‘secret weapon’ at Trawick International,” she smiles. The couple are in harmony with respect to the number-one perk of the job: travel. “Our work allows us the opportunity to explore some of the most amazing and iconic places in the world,” Oksana details. But COVID-19 changed that for a while. Daryl relates, “It was scary for the first few months after the virus hit in March 2020, but by July, our business turned up and hasn’t stopped climbing. Currently, we’re growing our lines of insurance and expanding into Canada and Latin America.” Married for five years, they have four children (Jonathan, Rebecca, Anna, and Michelle) and three grandchildren (Zoe, Liam, and Evelyn) who keep their hearts full. On the topic of Bay life, Oksana articulates our own views: “We enjoy living on the Eastern Shore. It has a laidback family feel you don’t find everywhere. It’s the best place we could imagine calling home.” Daryl adds, “Fairhope is blessed with great places to eat and shop. Some of our faves are Master Joe’s, Wok by d’Bay, The Fairhope Inn, The Bone and Barrel, and Thyme on Section.” Daryl claims, “Oksana is the beauty in this relationship. She has a very balanced approach to life. She prays daily, works out daily, makes family a priority, and spends quality time with a close circle of friends.” But we think Daryl’s selling himself short. His integrity and work ethic shine through his personal mantra: “‘Don’t tell me what you’re going to do; do it!’ I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished and grateful our clients know we deliver on what we promise them.” DARYL’S MOST EXCITING ADVENTURE? “Dating Oksana in Ukraine and Europe was pretty exciting!” OKSANA’S PERSONAL MANTRA? “Three things must be in harmony — thinking, talking, and doing.”

Cameron Weavil + Heather James HOMETOWN
M o b ile, Alabama Local real estate mogul Cameron Weavil, CCIM, is a true mover and shaker, not only serving as vice president for The Weavil Company and president of Premier Real Estate Company, but as president of the Mobile Area Association of REALTORS as well. “It’s great to give back to my industry,” he beams, adding contributing to the Bay Area community is equally rewarding. “I was a youth counselor for JH Ranch Outback for America (a Christian camp) for three years, which was an amazing experience coaching father/son and mother/son groups,” he details. He also participated in the Real Men Wear Pink Campaign in 2016 for the American Cancer Society with 29 other businessmen from Mobile and served as chairman of Ducks Unlimited for seven years in Oxford and Mobile working to conserve and protect waterfowl. “It’s important to always do the right thing when dealing with others,” Cameron insists. “Your business ethics and reputation will live with you forever.” Equally selfless, energetic, and with a heart the size of Texas, Cameron’s girlfriend, Heather James, shines almost as brightly as her smile. Having recently graduated with a certificate in Esthetics, Heather says she’s obsessed with skincare and is currently in the market for her dream job. “I hope to learn more on laser hair removal, Botox injections, and dermal fillers as I continue to grow in my field,” she shares. Having jumped into a career college after three years spent between community college (where she cheered for the Sun Chiefs) and at South (Go Jags!), Heather says the most important lesson she’s learned is to “always be true to yourself; never let what someone else says distract you from your goals.” Together with Cameron’s 10-year-old daughter, Hastings, and Heather’s 12-year-old pup, Bella, the pair enjoy time spent on Cameron’s boat cruising the Delta, Dog River, and Robinson Island in Orange Beach, though living in the Midtown area also has its fair share of perks. “We are always hanging out downtown eating sushi at Chuck’s Fish or the bomb burgers at Callaghan’s,” she says. “Some friends and I just bought Willie’s Place in downtown Mobile, so that is obviously my favorite spot,” Cameron chimes in. “We are rebranding, and the new name will be ‘The Stables Bar.’” “It also has a huge outside deck and is pet-friendly,” Heather adds. Moving forward, Cameron and Heather hope to continue to build on their relationship, remaining successful in both love and business. Cameron’s parting advice? “Pay close attention to those who don’t clap when you succeed,” he says. “Some people are just so mad at the world that they don’t like to see people do well in life and be happy.” Agreeing, Heather adds, “People are so eager to tear someone apart instead of lift one another up, but my hope is that humanity as a whole will open up their hearts and encourage instead of damage.” CAMERON’S MOST EXCITING ADVENTURE? “I studied International Business Law at the University of Innsbruck in Austria and we traveled to Prague, Budapest, Slovenia, Croatia, Amsterdam, London, Leeds, Reading, Paris, Munich, Rome, Florence, Venice, Cinque Terra, Galway, and Dublin, which was all pretty amazing.” HEATHER’S PERSONAL MANTRA? “‘(Matthew 7:12): Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.’ I stand by that verse every single day.”

Ashley Williams HOMETOWN
Se n a th , Miss ouri JPAR Coast and County-Mobile Real Estate Agent Ashley Williams adopted Deep South life eight years ago, landing in real estate after two years of pressure from good friend Adrienne Gill. “She finally talked me into it,” Ashley jokes, adding if you’d have asked her as a child what she’d be when she grew up, she’d have said “a cosmetologist” without hesitation. “I just love making people feel good about themselves and the art that goes along with it,” she details, which explains her present career path. “I absolutely love seeing a family fall in love with their new home,” she gushes. “That’ll never get old, and this will never just be ‘a job.’” A mother of four (Presley, 18; Braden, 17; and twins Gatlin and Landy, 9), Ashley strives to serve as a guiding light for her children (as inspired by her “Granny,” Billie Ann Braden), saying she tries to greet everyone she meets with a smile. “I also always compliment strangers,” she adds, as the impact it can have on another’s day is immeasurable. Citing motherhood as the most intense ride of her life, Ashley insists being a parent has been “the most wonderous adventure” she could have ever imagined. “Each of them fills my heart in such individual ways and they always keep me on my toes,” she beams. A lover of art, music, softball, and the beach, Ashley notes she’s enamored with our Gulf beaches, fine dining, nightlife, and endless shopping options available. Think Black Door Studio, Urban Emporium, Hemline, Street’s of Fairhope, The Hope Farm, El Papi, Spot of Tea, and more. Ever humble, Ashley says the best advice she could impart would be to “vibe high and low-key, feel and heal, and climb the mountain so you can see the world, not so the world can see you.” Her goals for the future? “I just hope to live a happy, healthy life and travel more with my family and friends.”
FUN FACT? “I am deathly afraid of (and oddly amused by) frogs.” IF YOU HAD TO CHANGE CAREERS TODAY? “I think I would make a very good judge.”

Lyons Friedman Yellin HOMETOWN
N e w Orl ea ns, Louis iana New in town and already making his mark, Lyons Yellin is as enthusiastic as he is appreciative of now calling Mobile home. A producer at FOX10 News and co-owner of Bliss Bridal with his wife Katie, Lyons loves constantly jumping from the bridal world to keeping people informed by telling captivating stories with his own fun and relatable twist. “I’ll never shy away from asking tough, pointed questions. It’s one of the aspects of my job I love most,” he says, adding, “The newsroom at FOX10 is absolutely amazing. It’s filled with talented journalists, but even better people, who’ve made me instantly feel at home.” With his wife Katie (an ACCESS “Beautiful Issue” alum) and son Davis (who’ll soon be 6 years old), Lyons is enjoying life and loves getting to know new people. “Katie and I are finding our groove here together — it’s all wonderful,” he exclaims. Even better, Lyons’ family is originally from Mobile and his grandparents, Lowell and Bobette Friedman, still live here. “I’m happy being able to see them regularly,” he shares. “Looking back on the family they’ve built and the good they’ve done for so many in Mobile is definitely something to aspire to.” It’s the kind of legacy Lyons and Katie hope to leave one day. “I love seeing all the happy past and future Bliss Brides,” he says. “Plus, I’m so excited we’ll now be able to help even more with the opening of our expanded Fairhope location.” Practicing compassion is beautiful to Lyons, and it’s something he says is crucial in business and journalism. He tells us, “I believe everyone deserves to be treated equally and with the utmost kindness. I’m genuinely interested in hearing people’s stories. I can see when they know someone is truly listening and respects what they have to say. I hope it makes them feel like the most important person anywhere.” After covering the New Orleans Saints, Pelicans, LSU, and Alabama football for years in print and on television, Lyons is thrilled to be settling in with a team of his own here in the Mobile Bay area. We wish Lyons and his family the biggest Bay welcome as they move forward. CHILDHOOD DREAM JOB? “Being that I’m now, as my young wife says, ‘140 years old,’ I’m too old to remember, given the job landscape has changed quite a bit since the Industrial Revolution.” FUN FACT? “As a kid I spent a few summers in the circus (yes, really), where my specialty was the high-wire and juggling.” 96 ACCESS Magazine / June-July 2021
