The Decatur Chamber of Commerce is a voluntary organization of citizens investing their time and money in community development and working together to improve the economic, civic and cultural well-being of the area. The Chamber is led by its members. They elect a 15-member board, from which three people are elected to an executive board. The board president leads board meetings and represents the Chamber at local functions. The Chamber office is managed by the executive director and staff.

Christie Rhine

Christie Rhine learned the importance of volunteering at an early age, spending her time with family at the Bridgeport Riding Club on weekends. “I just thought everyone spent their weekends volunteering,” Rhine said. Even as a successful real estate broker, she’s never slowed down, finding new ways to give back to the community, working at events and bringing people together. Saturday, Rhine was honored as the Decatur Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year during the 30th annual auction. “Thank you. You don’t know how much this means to me,” Rhine said. She added she was humbled, especially after looking through the list of past recipients. A lifelong Wise County resident, Rhine grew up riding and roping with the Bridgeport Riding Club. In 2011 after a career in banking, she earned her real estate license. She would later become a broker and started her award-winning Rhine Realty. She won the 2017-18 Messenger’s Reader’s Choice award for Best Realtor. In 2018, the Decatur Chamber of Commerce named Rhine Realty the Small Business of the Year. Rhine has served as a Chamber board member, including a stint as president in 2017-18. She started the Chamber’s ambassador program. Under her leadership, the Chamber launched its successful Eighter from Decatur Food Truck Challenge. The event this past year moved from the Decatur Square to the Wise County Fairgrounds, drawing a large crowd. She also cofounded the Glitzy Girls Trailer Park on the square to raise money for local nonprofits. She has been a member of the Decatur and Bridgeport Main Street Boards and served as president of the Area Business Women’s Network. She also belongs to several realtor groups, including the Greater Denton/Wise County Association of Realtors. Her hot pink signs can be seen all over town and around her office on Trinity Street. She admitted pink is not her favorite color, and she adopted it after a printing mistake. She credited her staff and husband Bret for helping her balance her business and helping the community. She also said she adopted the advice of the late James Wood about being involved and the community remembering and helping you. Story By Richard Greene

Decatur City Parks Harmon Park

3351 E. Mill St. Harmon Park boasts the elaborate Crystelle Waggoner Community Playground and two lighted baseball fields. There’s also a skate park.

Hollis and Sue Jones Park 550 Country Club Road Jones Park is the largest of the city’s six parks. It’s next to the Decatur Golf Club and features two basketball courts, two baseball fields, one soccer field and two sand volleyball courts. There is also a playground, a disc golf course and a walking trail, measuring 0.46 miles.

Kenny Renshaw Park 2705 S. Farm Road 51 Renshaw Park has two soccer fields and two softball fields. There is a pavilion, playground and new walking trail, measuring 0.62 miles.

Louida “Big Mamma” Willis Park 400 N. Arthur St. Big Mama Willis Park is about three-quarters of an acre and features a playground and sandbox. There are also picnic tables and benches.

Wise County Veterans Memorial Park

Trinity St. wisecountyvets.org Beginning clockwise from the entrance, the Path of Sacrifice and Valor leads visitors through 18 brass placards that commemorate American sacrifices in battle from the Revolutionary War to present. Inlaid in the walkway are 7,000 pavers available to personalize in honor of those who have served or continue to serve the United States in the armed forces. An eternal flame is centered in the park to signify that sacrifice is the price we pay for eternal vigilance and the defense of our freedoms.

Wise County Heritage Museum 1602 S. Trinity St. wisehistory.com The Wise County Heritage Museum housed the Decatur Baptist College prior to 1965. Today its exhibits tell the story of Wise County. The Lost Battalion Room serves as a tribute to local soldiers who were captured by the Japanese as prisoners of war in the Dutch East Indies during World War II. Sam Woody’s cabin, one of the first structures in Wise County, is now in front of the museum, and the museum’s G.C. Rann Auditorium hosts monthly gospel opry sing-alongs, as well as concerts, plays and weddings throughout the year. The museum also offers genealogy services to help people trace their Wise County roots.

Petrified Wood Gas Station 904 Business U.S. 81/287 The Petrified Wood Gas Station stands like a relic from a bygone era on the east side of Decatur. E.F. Boydston built a gas station in 1927 and eight years later decided to cover its exterior with chunks of petrified wood. He even covered the walls of the cafe next door and the motor court.

Decatur Golf Club 211 Country Club Rd. decaturgolfclub.com Located about 2 miles north of Decatur, just off FM 730, DGC offers private memberships, as well as public daily rates. The clubhouse and pool just underwent significant improvements and are inviting areas to unwind after a challenging round of golf. DGC also offers on-site cart barns for members to store their personal carts.

Decatur Municipal Airport

351 Airport Rd. decaturtx.org/131/Airport The Decatur Municipal Airport has been in existence since 1914, making it the oldest airport in the state. One mile north of town off Farm Road 730, it features a 4,200-foot by 60-foot runway with a 17,000-pound dual wheel weight-bearing capacity. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week.

The center offers full catering services and a state-of-the-art sound system. Fairfield Inn and Suites is located on site, allowing the center to host multi-day events and conventions.

The Waggoner Mansion End of Main Street The Waggoner Mansion was built by Dan Waggoner and was dubbed “El Castile.” The two-story home sits on 13.5 acres and includes 16 rooms and eight fireplaces. It’s constructed of fossiliferous limestone and decorated with handcrafted wrought iron on the roof and balconies. Although the mansion is not open to the public, it’s worth trekking to the gate for a photo op.

Ambassador Program The Decatur Chamber of Commerce Ambassador Program was created in 2020 to support and promote members, board of directors and staff by: l supporting and attending Chamber events and ribbon cuttings l educating members about the services and benefits of Chamber membership

Ambassadors serve one-year terms beginning in January, and they must be an employee of a current business or an individual member in good standing with the Decatur Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Chad Jones leads DISD into the future

DECATUR ISD

Dr. Chad Jones began his tenure as superintendent at Decatur ISD in November of 2021, and he’s impressed with what he’s seen so far from the school and community. “I just feel very welcomed by everyone — the business community, the parents, the students, teachers and staff in general,” he said. “It’s been very positive and upbeat. There seems to be a very positive vibe right now in the district and the community.” Over the years, Jones has served in many roles in education, beginning as a basketball coach and biology teacher in Oklahoma, then administrative roles as both high school and elementary principal in South Texas. Since 2010, he’s been a superintendent: three years at West Hardin County Consolidated ISD, five years at Iola ISD and three years at Sinton ISD prior to coming to Decatur. The move to Decatur provided him the opportunity to lead a

larger school district and live closer to his family in Oklahoma. He’s served in a variety of roles, including many at smaller schools, so he’s had experience in just about every area of education. “I think it helps in leadership when you’ve worn the shoes of as many people as possible… I’ve had my hand in every facet of running a district,” he said. He lists his two foundational pieces of a successful school district as elementary literacy and engagement of students, which starts with building a relationship with students and making learning as entertaining as possible. Jones said he will strive for success in all aspects of education. “While academics come first, I’m a huge believer in the whole experience. I want our kids to be successful in every extracurricular activity,” he said. It didn’t take long for Jones to see that success first-hand, as the Decatur High School Lady Eagles

volleyball team won it’s fifth state championship in his first few weeks on the job. Since then, he’s been pleased to see a number of students find success in the classroom, the athletic field or court and in the show arena. He knows there could be a few bumps in the road to achieving success, but that’s to be expected. “There will be times we try things and don’t succeed, and to me, if you don’t fail every now and then, you aren’t trying hard enough or pushing the envelope enough,” Jones said. Success starts with making sure teachers feel supported. “The most important thing that happens here

MCLAUGHLIN LEADS WEATHERFORD COLLEGE WISE COUNTY Throughout her time as an educator, from teaching to working as an administrator and now in higher education, Kristin McLaughlin has held one belief about education — one size doesn’t fit all. “That’s what I’ve always lived by, because you can’t,” McLaughlin said. “You can’t make decisions for folks. You have to present them with the opportunities, and we have a lot of opportunities here and I’m excited about that.” As the executive dean at Weatherford College Wise County, McLaughlin is determined to unlock the potential of the campus to best meet the needs of students in a growing county. McLaughlin, a Wise County resident, was named the campus’ dean last August. She previously served as WCWC’s coordinator of workforce education since the fall of 2017. McLaughlin enjoyed the opportunity to work with many non-traditional students. She pointed out one of the welding classes has students ranging in age from 17 to 70. “I love the diversity,” McLaughlin said. “I do get 17- and 18-year-olds, but a lot of them are on their own and have different needs and do need assistance. Most of my workforce students are working full time. That’s why nighttime classes are so big there.” While working at WCWC, she recognized the potential of the campus to meet the diverse needs

in the local community. It was a challenge she was willing to take on in her role as dean. She recognizes a main part of her job is educating the community on the opportunities available at the campus. “I love a challenge. When you walk the halls and they’re empty and the parking lot is empty and this facility is incredible and the price of tuition is phenomenal compared to a four-year school,” McLaughlin said acknowledging the need to grow the enrollment. “You have smaller classes and highly-qualified instructors and faculty members. A lot of them have taught at four-year schools, but they choose to be here. The pitch I would make to parents is why would you want your students to go to Dallas or Fort Worth with other community colleges when you could come right down the road.”

In her first two semesters as dean, McLaughlin has already seen some progress. For the spring 2022 semester, the WCWC campus had a 16 percent increase in enrollment from 329 students last spring to 381 currently. The figure does not include dual credit students in Wise County high schools earning college credit from WC. “We are optimistic that enrollment will only continue to increase during the upcoming academic year,” McLaughlin said. “We are excited that there will be an Associate Degree Nursing evening/ weekend cohort at WCWC beginning in Fall 2022. We are planning a more robust recruiting schedule, exploring different course offerings and expanding the hours and days that we will offer courses.”

AD Steve Huff looks to continue success Steve Huff officially started as Decatur ISD’s athletic director and football coach in March 2022 after a decade coaching football at College Station High School. “It’s great to finally be here,” Huff said. “I’m excited to get my feet on the ground here. This is a storied, tradition rich program. Looking back at the past, there’s been a lot of success, not just in football but in all sports. I believe there’s a great vision for the future in place in the district, and there’s a sense of excitement around everything going on at Decatur.” Huff said the chance to lead the program in a smaller town was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up. “When you look at the size of Decatur High School with a little more than 1,000 students, that’s a great size school to me,” Huff said. “The opportunity here to coach at a single-school town was enticing because that means all of the kids coming up through middle school will be arriving at this building in a couple of years. Working with the younger kids is huge when trying to continue building a healthy program.” Huff spent 10 years at College Station, compiling a 100-26 record, including 88-19 as a varsity program.

College Station defeated Aledo 20-19 in the 2017 5A Division II state championship. In 2021, the Cougars finished 15-1. Katy Paetow defeated College Station for the 5AI state title, 27-24. “We were very fortunate to have some success, but we had good players and good coaches,” Huff said. “The hardest thing about leaving a program is all of the relationships you’ve built with the kids and people in the district. You get really embedded in the community after a decade. It was definitely hard to pull away, but sometimes you’ve got to move on. After walking into the weight room here at Decatur my first day, it was a whole lot easier to do.” As the program’s new leader, Huff wants the Eagles to be known for their work ethic. “One of our mantras is going to be hard work,” Huff said. “There’s nothing fancy about winning or getting stronger and faster — it all comes because of hard work. It’s all about doing the little things right, all the way down to the fundamentals. I want hard work to be instilled in every level of Decatur athletics so that we’re all perfectly aligned together, and so athletes will know what we expect of them as they come up. It’s not an overnight thing, it’s a process.”

ART ABOUT TOWN What does a dinosaur wearing a saddle and mice planning a jail break have in common? They are both featured on murals in the historic downtown district of Decatur. In addition to these two whimsical scenes, other nearby public murals add year-round splashes of color to the local landscape or help reflect the historical identity of the town. Many of the murals have been painted within the past five years, while others have been around for close to a century. One of the oldest murals is located in the old post office building, which now houses the Decatur Chamber of Commerce

and Decatur Main Street offices. The post office was dedicated in July of 1938. A Depression-era project through the U.S. Treasury Department — the Section of Painting and Sculpture — commissioned artists to paint murals in new federal buildings. One such mural was added to the Decatur post office building a year after its opening. The July 6, 1939, Wise County Messenger stated, “Decatur citizens were surprised by the appearance of a mural on the north wall of the post office lobby.” The mural painted by Ray Stanford Strong titled “Texas Plains” features a sweeping western landscape that features

a cowboy on horseback, cattle, rock formations and large, puffy clouds. Just a couple of blocks away is one of the newer murals in town, completed in 2017 by local artist Rick Duwe. Painted on the side wall of one of downtown’s many historic buildings, the mural resembles a postcard with the words “Greetings from Decatur.” Within each letter of “Decatur” are separate paintings which depict different local landmarks: the Waggoner Mansion, a scene from the Chisholm Trail cattle drive, the Woody cabin, the Wise County Courthouse, the Petrified Wood Station and the Wise County Heritage Museum, which formerly

housed the Decatur Baptist College. Nearby, if you look close enough, you might just find those law-breaking mice. If you’re planning a mural scavenger hunt for Downtown Decatur, be sure to also look for paintings of historic CocaCola advertisements, flowers in perpetual bloom and a tribute to local first responders. Murals both old and new can also be found inside some downtown businesses as well, so be sure to keep a sharp lookout. You never know what hidden treasures might be found just around the corner.

One of North Texas’ hidden jewels is the LBJ National Grasslands, located just north of Decatur. Boasting 20,250 acres, the vast area provides not only habitat for wildlife, but also numerous recreational activities. Some of the best horseback riding in the state can be found in the 75 miles of multi-use trails. TADRA Point is a designated trailhead and is the primary access point for the trail system, which is also used by hikers and mountain bikers. Don’t let the name “Grasslands” fool you: the area features plenty of trees, rolling hills and lakes. You’ll find a variety of wildlife that calls the Grasslands home, including deer, coyotes, bobcats, quail, turkey and several varieties of fish in the lakes. The 30-acre Black Creek Lake is the largest of the lakes and has a developed recreation area with seven picnic units, seven walk-in camp units, a boat ramp and fishing bridge. A 4-mile hiking trail connects Black Creek Lake to Cottonwood Lake. Valley View Group

Congress then established the Land Utilization Program that bought homesteads from bankrupt farmers to turn them into public land. The Civilian Conservation Corps, a Depression-era program, worked to halt the erosion by replanting

and using conservation techniques. In the 1950s, the USDA Forest Service took over management of the Grasslands. Today the tall-grass prairie is interspersed with remnants of an ancient forest that once separated the eastern deciduous forests and grasslands of the southern plains. The LBJ National Grasslands office is located at 1400 N. U.S. 81/287 in Decatur.
