NRMS noted as low performing district

Preliminary data released by the State Board of Education have the Nash-Rocky Mount School System once again on the list of low-performing districts.

This is the third year the school system has been on the list.

Low-performing schools are that receive a School Perfor-

mance Grade of D or F and do not exceed growth. Low-performing districts are districts where the majority of schools received a School Performance Grade and have been For the 2016-2017 school year, 505 schools in North Carolina forming and 11 districts were low performing, both up from 489 schools and 10 districts in the 2015-2016. The number of recurring low-performing

schools increased from 415 in 2015-16 to 468 in 2016-17.

Accountability for the NashRocky Mount School District, presented the information to the Nash-Rocky Mount Board of Education last Thursday night at the board’s regular meeting. ”This year we have 24 replained. “Our K-2 schools do not report so they are not considered reporting schools.”

Local woman launches Autism support group

BY AMANDA CLARK GRAPHIC STAFF WRITER A retired educator has started an autism support group to provide resources and support to Nash County residents.

Barbara Batts recently started up the Nash County Chapter for the Autism Society of North Carolina.

The goal of the Autism Society of North Carolina is to improve the

lives of individuals with autism, support their families, and educate communities.

Batts said she decided to start the group because she has a nine-yearold grandson with autism.

“I saw my family needed support and talked to other people that wanted to share their stories,” Batts said. “And they wanted support too.”
