ately I can’t get enough documentaries. From the journeys of the once teenage outsiders transforming into fashion’s most iconic insiders like Vogue editor André Leon Talley and 70s designer of the decade, Halston, to the jaw-dropping plight of Susan B. Anthony (yes, the one on the coin), I just can’t be satiated. Interestingly, Susan was an original Suffragette who dedicated her life to many causes — one being a woman’s right to vote.

Having worked tirelessly, her list of accomplishments is long, including the delivery of up to 100 speeches around the country per year, publishing a women’s rights newspaper called The Revolution, and even arranging for Congress to be presented with an amendment giving women the right to vote (which eventually became the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1920). The math adds up to her starting around 1852 and ending when she died in 1906 — 54 years of her life dedicated to a cause she never saw materialize. I feel like a wimp.

Realizing I’m meeting more and more women with Susan-esque tenacity, my team and I were inspired to highlight some local pioneers. A nod to our past, today’s women continue to rise up — real-life versions of cultural icon Rosie the Riveter, who represented women who took over men’s factory and shipyard jobs during WWII. The point is, our women have been called to duty and are showing up with bells on. From teachers to frontline health care providers, these women are selfless and deserving of acknowledgement and praise. We only hope we did them justice. In this issue, we hope you enjoy getting to know some of our local heroes that have rolled up their sleeves and are doing time in the trenches while laying a new road for so many to follow.

The Primary Path Amy Strassburg, MD Looking back on her time served in the Air Force as an attending physician and her four years in medical school at the University of South Alabama, Dr. Amy Strassburg shares it’s sheer determination and grit that’ll get you through, but as the Avett Brother’s song goes: “Decide what to be and go be it.” For Dr. Strassburg, the decision was simple.

always wanted to be a physician,” shares Dr. Amy Strassburg, an internal medicine physician for Alabama Medical Group (AMG). “I never really considered another path for my life.

I don’t remember one particular event or person who inspired me to pursue this path; I believe it was a calling from the beginning.” Staffed among some of the area’s finest, Dr. Strassburg applies her varied skillset to her role as a primary care physician to countless members of the Bay Area community. “By my design, my day starts early,” Dr. Strassburg shares, who does her rounds among other AMG physicians in the hospital before heading to the clinic to see more patients almost daily. At the hospital, she and other physicians are a part of the decision-making process for patients undergoing surgeries or being treated for infection or cardiopulmonary issues.

In clinic, they see patients for a variety of reasons — some are sick with an infection or a chronic illness such as diabetes or coronary artery disease; others come in to assure that their preventive health care needs are taken care of (vaccines, colon cancer screenings, breast cancer screenings, etc.); and many more come in with mental health issues like anxiety and depression. “I believe having a relationship with a primary care provider is extremely important to have before you need it,” she shares. “I enjoy meeting patients in clinic that simply want to establish care just in case a future need arises.”

Joyfully embracing her role in the healthcare of others, Dr. Strassburg says she loves what she does. “It’s a privilege to be a part of my patients’ lives,” she shares. “Like any profession, there are frustrating parts to it and some days I am completely exhausted by the end, but I look forward to my workday and feel

My kids know what I do for a living, but until recently didn’t even know my clinic’s name. Who I am to them is ‘Mama,’ and the rest falls into place.”

As a self-proclaimed “doc mama,” Dr. Strassburg says she is thankful to be able to bring a greater perspective to her children on a daily basis. “Life is precious and short and worth living,” she shares. “People matter, and each of us has worth and purpose. Any small part we can play in each other’s lives to make our time on this planet a little more peaceful is worth every second, and to me it is rewarding beyond measure.”

, what an absolutely crazy year 2020 was for all of us! Between the pandemic, quarantine, uncertainty for the future, hurricanes, and so much more, the ACCESS crew needed a night of togetherness to celebrate our hard work, determination, and appreciation for each woman that worked tirelessly to keep our magazine afloat through the toughest year any of us can recall in our lifetimes.

Naturally, when it came to the perfect way to celebrate, we turned to our good friend Matt LeMond, owner of POST (a fabulous craft cocktail and wine bar located in downtown Mobile), and he did not disappoint! On Wednesday, December 16th we gathered our troops, donned our finest duds (thankfully all sweatpants were left at home), got all 18 ACCESS Magazine / January 2021

dolled up (does anyone even know what mascara is anymore?), and headed to POST for one of their ever-popular cocktail classes to put our mixology skills to the test (and no, we don’t mean our ability to pour a hefty glass of wine).

each cocktail class allows guests the chance to learn the secret to making some of POST’s most popular cocktails. Open to the public and held the last Thursday of every month, each cocktail class provides patrons with all the tools and ingredients needed to make three delicious cocktails — a total experience paired with Tyler’s expert guidance and extensive knowledge.

From seasonal drinks to menu staples, every guest is bound to leave the class feeling like a professional (or at least bear a greater appreciation for the skill it takes to make these drinks).

Having hosted more than 34 classes thus far, we aren’t surprised at their success after taking one ourselves — they’re an absolute blast (and definitely made us realize we need to tip our bartenders a bit better)!

fter a toast and a celebratory/ introductory shot of vodka, we started off learning the basics of every bartender’s essential tools. Walking us through the various jiggers, cups, muddlers, and strainers, Tyler gave us the history and purpose behind everything we could ever need to make a mean cocktail.

Did you know there are two types of strainers used at POST, and each has its own unique backstory? We didn’t at first, but we do now! And yes, it does matter which specific tool you use depending on the drink you’re making — not all jiggers are created equal!

First up was one of POST’s classics: Mailman's Kid. This vodka-based drink uses house-made sour, muddled strawberries, and soda to give it its delicious taste, and it’s no wonder it’s a fan favorite. This drink was fairly simple to make, but watch out — muddling can be dangerous, which I learned the hard way after accidently squirting strawberry guts straight into my eye during the process (I think my eye still burns).

Next up was another classic cocktail: Without A Paddle. Made with Knob Creek, sweet vermouth, orange bitters, and honey and cherry syrup, this drink was a hit with the men in our group (and some of the ladies).

Finally, we finished our night with a drink from their seasonal menu: the Mistletoe Margarita.

This holiday twist on the classic margarita was made with Altos Plata tequila, Cointreau, cinnamon syrup, and cranberry and lime juice. Garnished with a cinnamon stick and candied cranberries, this drink is perfect for warming you up on those cold winter nights!

On December 3rd, Make-A-Wish Alabama’s Wish Grantor Laurel Flowers hosted her annual holiday gala, “Wine and Wishes,” which raises necessary funds to grant wishes for sick children in our area. riginally from Mineral Wells, Texas (a small town southwest of Fort Worth), Dr. Rachel Hunter admits she’s felt the calling to become a doctor ever since her childhood, recognizing early on that her gifts for math and science, as well as her passion for helping and serving others, made becoming a physician a natural fit for her. “I also loved sports growing up and was very active, so when I began studying medicine, I was drawn to surgery early on,” she shares. “Like sports, surgery relies on a team of individuals to achieve a common goal.” Working to fulfill her dream, Dr. Hunter attended Tarleton State University where she received a Bachelor of Science degree, and though medical school was the natural next step for Dr. Hunter, she wasn’t accepted the first time she applied. Resolved to see her dream through, she remained undeterred in her pursuit to become a doctor, going on to complete her Master of Science degree at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth, Texas, to help strengthen her application. “I learned that perseverance and hard work pay off and that accomplishing my goals and dreams might not always happen via a straight path,” Dr. Hunter shares.

The right time and place finally presented itself, leading her to earn her M.D. degree at Texas A&M’s College of Medicine. After school, Dr. Hunter spent the next two years training as a resident in general surgery at Houston Methodist Hospital. “During my surgical residency, I developed an interest in breast care in particular, because I wanted to serve and help other women,” she shares. “I really enjoyed working directly with patients — they were always so appreciative and grateful for my care.” Eventually, Dr. Hunter made her way down to the Mobile Bay area, transferring as a third-year general surgery resident at the University of South Alabama (USA). Next, Dr. Hunter attended Vanderbilt University to complete her fellowship in breast surgical oncology before returning to the Gulf Coast to work for USA in the community she has grown to love so much.

Now serving as a fellowship-trained female Breast Surgical Oncologist, Dr. Hunter provides patients with empathetic care and the understanding they need after receiving a breast cancer diagnosis. “My passion is to help and serve others, and being able to help create a path and treatment plan that leaves my patients feeling

confident in their care means more to me than anything else,” she explains.

“I genuinely love spending time with my patients and want each one to feel as though they are my only patient.

My goal is to make each patient in my care feel seen and understood, as well as confident in their diagnosis and plan so that they leave their consultation knowing every question and concern they had was answered.”

Perhaps most importantly, Dr. Hunter works hard to ensure all of her patients receive a treatment plan that is personally tailored to them.

“There isn’t a ‘one-size-fits-all’ treatment or surgery,” she shares.

“Each patient has their own needs and goals from both a treatment plan and surgical perspective.” To provide her patients with expertise and a minimally invasive approach, Dr. Hunter specializes in two techniques: Nipple-Sparing Mastectomies and oncoplastic techniques.

“Unique to my practice, I also offer pectoral nerve blocks for patients undergoing mastectomies to help reduce pain from surgery, and subsequently reduce the use of narcotics in the postoperative setting,” Dr. Hunter says.

“The oncoplastic techniques I specialize in are very important to improving the overall cosmetic outcome for a woman,” Dr. Hunter explains.

“Breast surgery scars can significantly impact a woman’s psychological and emotional recovery and quality of life after surgery because scars can have a large impact on a woman’s self-confidence, intimacy, and body image.” In a mastectomy procedure, the surgeon removes the breast cancer tumor by removing all of the breast tissue. There are several mastectomy options: a simple (total) mastectomy, a Skin-Sparing Mastectomy, and a Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy (NSM).

The Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy is a type of mastectomy procedure where the surgeon removes all of the breast tissue but does not remove the nipple.

“With the Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy, I can ensure all of the scars are hidden with incisions made in a place that is very hard to see,” she shares.

Empowering women while providing them with the best surgical care is Dr. Hunter’s goal every time she walks into her office. “My passion is to make sure my patients know I am with them and for them throughout their entire journey, from initial diagnosis to treatment to post-surgery,” she says. “I think it is so important to stay positive for my patients and to be a source of consistency for them in a time that can seem chaotic.

In the cancer care journey, knowledge is power.” And simply put, as a woman working in the medical field, helping other women is nothing short

of empowering. Owing her success to her amazing support system of friends and family, Dr. Hunter says, “I am so grateful that I grew up in an environment where I was always encouraged that I could do anything I set my mind to.”

Outside of the hospital, Dr. Hunter dedicates her time to various professional local and national organizations, including The American Society of Breast Surgeons, The Medical Society of Mobile County, The American College of Surgeons, The Surgical Society of Oncology, and the Association of Women Surgeons. She also volunteers her time for Casting for Recovery, an organization near and dear to her heart. “They’re a retreat environment where women who have had breast cancer are able to find healing and start their life again in a post-cancer scenario,” she shares. “I love being able to combine my love for volunteering in my community with my passion for medicine while meeting incredible women in the process,” she says.

Off the clock, Dr. Hunter has been married to her wonderful husband, John Hunter, (a local colon and rectal surgeon) for the past four years.

“He’s the one who made me fall in love with Mobile,” she shares. “I love that he can always make me laugh.

He’s so supportive no matter what kind of day I’ve had,” she gushes.

“Some people think two surgeons in a household would be stressful, but we love that we can both understand the day-to-day life that comes with being a surgeon. We often end our days talking about our work and relating to each other’s challenges.” Together, the two share a sweet 7-year-old Cockapoo named Remi.

“I’m definitely one of those people that always asks if dogs are allowed,” Dr. Hunter jokes. “She loves to go and just be with us no matter what we’re doing.” When Dr. Hunter isn’t working, she loves spending as much time outdoors with her husband as possible, whether it’s hiking, being on the water, or exploring the Gulf Coast. “We absolutely love that Mobile is a big city but has a smalltown vibe,” she says. “We enjoy music and attending live concerts, and frequently visit the Cedar Street Social Club, where my husband plays the upright bass and I sometimes sing along,” she jokes. You can often catch her enjoying a beer at Braided River Brewing Company or a nice dinner and glass of vino at Red or White.

nvolved” doesn’t even begin to scrape the surface with regard to Dr. Sandra King Parker, who serves as Chief Medical Officer for AltaPointe Health and Vice Chair of the University of South Alabama College of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry and is dual certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in adult psychiatry and child/adolescent psychiatry. Dutifully dedicated to her practice and role as a healthcare provider, Dr. Parker also serves as a member of the Mobile County Domestic Violence Taskforce and the Alabama Telehealth Workgroup and serves on the Advisory Board for the University of South Alabama’s College of Nursing.

When not otherwise detained by her roles in the healthcare field, she is also member of the Mobile Ballet’s Board of Directors and has served on the Board of Directors for the Distinguished Young Women of Baldwin County as well. And as if all that weren’t enough, Dr. Parker and her family have also frequented Ecuador on many mission trips over the years, still sponsoring a free lunch program for schoolchildren there today. “Over the years I have had the privilege of serving in numerous volunteer roles that were related

either to my chosen career or to causes for which I am passionate,” Dr. Parker shares. “While these roles have varied in size and category, I find that what I enjoy the most in any venture is the hope that I am working to make a positive difference, whether it’s in the field of healthcare, the arts, the community, or whatever it is we are working towards.”

As a top-tier officer at AltaPointe, Dr. Parker says being a woman in her field is incredibly gratifying. “In my role as Chief Medical Officer I get to be part of a team that genuinely cares about the people in our community and is constantly working to find new ways to deliver quality, affordable psychiatric and primary healthcare to people in our community,” she shares. “We have opened several new locations that offer both psychiatric and primary healthcare at the same location, which provides more convenient, more comprehensive, and more efficient healthcare options to our communities.” Her role as Vice Chair of the USA Department of Psychiatry is equally as fulfilling. “In this role, I get to play a part in training the next generation of psychiatrists and child psychiatrists,” she shares.

“Also, because we continue to grow our psychiatry residency program and

many of our graduates stay in the area, I feel like we are helping to increase the amount of psychiatric services available in our area… something that is desperately needed.”

When it comes to leading others, Dr. Parker is firm in her mindset that attitude is everything. “Attitude, attitude, attitude,” she affirms. “I treat people how I want to be treated, lead by example, reward hard work and not incompetence, and always remember to be kind to people, because one never truly knows what another individual may be going through,” she says. And regarding the future generation of young female leaders? “I would tell - Dr. Sandra today’s girls and young women that they can accomplish anything that they tell themselves they can,” Dr. Parker says. “The glass ceilings and bottlenecks of the past are being shattered at a spectacularly swift rate.

Originally hailing from DeFuniak Springs, Fla., Dr. Parker presently resides in Mobile with her husband of 34 years, Jim, and their prized English bulldogs. Their two children, Colby (31) and Courtney (28), both grown and married - Dr. Sandra to “wonderful spouses” Kaity and Henley, round out Dr. Parker’s family, whom she loves spending time with at every opportunity. Though happily grounded in the here-andnow, Dr. Parker remains ever on the move, sharing she has much to look forward to in the new year. “If you know anything about me, then you know that I have dozens of projects and future projects and collaborations dancing around in my head at any given time,” she jokes. “Hopefully, my partners and I can manage to pull off many of these in the new year.

I guess we’ll just have to see! Most of the time, I am as amazed at what comes to fruition as everyone else.”

Interestingly, according to the National Association of Realtors, 67 percent of all Realtors are female.

That said, when it comes to aspiring female Realtors, Amanda gives sage advice: “Ask yourself why you are passionate about this profession. Then, reach out to someone (or several ‘someones’) who are successful in whatever it is that you’re pursuing. Remember that they are only a guide; it is up to you to hold yourself accountable in the process on the way to reach your goals. Allow yourself to claim what you really want and then go for it. Affirm to yourself everyday that you will succeed."

She also advises to always approachevery situation with integrity, confidence, and competence so no one will ever question your ability. “Sharing your experiences (good and bad) with a potential client builds trust by giving them some insight into your character and work ethic," she says.

"Keep yourself up to date on knowledge, skills, and trends in your area of expertise. If you’re not continually learning and keeping yourself ‘in the know,’ remember: your competition is,” she warns.

riginally from Saginaw, Mich., Dana Eberly’s road to engineering has beevn full of twists and turns, having first dreamed of being a flight attendant based on her love of traveling — a dream that later shifted to aspirations of becoming a pilot. “I recall my uncle (a Naval Commander) trying to convince my male cousin one year older than me to apply to the Naval Academy,” Dana shares.

“While my cousin was not interested, I was listening, and decided to begin the long application and interview process to attend the U.S. Naval Academy in 1978.” Unfortunately, the discovery of her imperfect vision halted her path to becoming a pilot in the U.S. Navy.

With a desire to further her academic career, Dana settled on a path in engineering based on her love of math and science. She graduated from Michigan State University and eventually followed in her father’s footsteps to become an engineer, starting a career that has meant so much to her. “I get to go to work every day performing a job I truly enjoy and get satisfaction from,” Dana shares.

INVESTED Poise, charm, dedication, drive… all acutely descriptive, yet equally pale in comparison to the content of character of Dr. Khalilah Burton, who serves Baldwin County and its surrounding communities in a capacity rivalled by few at best. Having earned her doctorate just this past December, Khalilah serves professionally as the Vice Provost for Institutional Effectiveness, Planning, and Compliance for Columbia Southern University, but her regular “9 to 5” encompasses only a small part of her daily hustle.

hen she’s not creating and implementing academic strategies for CSU, Dr. Khalilah Burton serves as a member of the Baldwin County Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., an organization founded on the principles of advancing academic excellence and supporting communities and individuals in need.

I handle the scheduling and ordering of supplies; Krista is the eye for balance and leveled letters; Kyra’s job is to organize the layout when we arrive to the yard and help me install the special signs; and Donald works directly with Krista for leveling and anchors all of the cards at the end.”

that works for their lifestyle with the intent to save, give, and budget God’s way,” Khalilah shares, whose family attends Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in Loxley. “As a working teen and young adult, I made some really poor financial choices that negatively impacted me as I started to live on my own,” she admits. “As a result, I’ve seen what grit, financial education, and faith can do to restore the financial trajectory of your life, so my husband and I made a commitment to implement as many tools as possible to set our girls up for healthy decision making. As such, the girls have been business-minded all their lives, understanding that you honor God with your earnings, and you have to work to get what you want.”

Despite all her accolades, Khalilah Burton is as humble as they come.

“When I work, I simply just do the work,” she shares. “I don’t think I do a ‘man’s work’ or compete with the work of another woman; I just simply do my best. There’s something special about women as God created us. He gifted us with so many abilities, talents, skills, and the ability to balance womanhood, motherhood, careers, leadership, and the finesse of femininity all at the same time — I’m often amazed,” she says. “I’ve come to appreciate all of these threads that make up who I am.”

All told, it’s obvious Khalilah has her priorities straight and has a deep-seeded knowledge of what it takes to lead others. “Leaders listen, they know how to identify gaps, and they know how to give grace,” she shares. “I guess I would say I am a woman empowered by having empowered other girls and women.”

Her personal mission? To nurture, lead, and empower. “I want to be a nurturing wife, mother, and friend.

I want to lead others towards goals they set for themselves and I want to lead my children in a way that gives them the tools to plant and bear great fruit,” she says. “Finally, I want to empower people to use their lives for the good, to use their finances God’s way, and to empower themselves to do great works.” Perhaps congratulations are already in order.

Since the dawn of time and as the caregivers of humanity, women have habitually neglected their own needs and physical issues, often putting children, spouses, family, and friends above themselves. Southern breeding and taboo lady talk aside, ACCESS Magazine’s Pink Table Talk columnist Charlotte Kilborn Carey decided to dive deep… very deep. Hitting up the Eastern Shore’s premier lady doctor dynamic duo, Dr. Christy Guepet and Dr. Angie McCool-Pearson, she inquires about all things female.

ith great courage and a real need for solutions (not only for myself, but for all women), I asked Dr. Christy Guepet and Dr. Angie McCool-Pearson some tough and uncomfortable questions ranging from the mayhem of menopause to sudden hair loss (and yes, even sex). In talking with the good doctors, I learned from the experts how medicine has gone in new and exciting directions, helping women get their lives, sanity, and their overall health back on track. Jump on the train as we travel through a conversation with the forward-thinking doctors behind Southern Women’s Specialists and dare to “go there” as we talk about all things pink.

If you’re like me, I’m finding myself at “a certain age” where it has become increasingly impossible to ignore the fact I am changing. Sure, I’m smarter and wiser, but even that can’t overshadow the changes in my physical self that can no longer be shushed.

The constant hot flashes, thinning hair, hair where there shouldn’t be, and even a changing sex drive all seem to suddenly be bombarding me like a meteor shower.

I consider myself a very forward thinker and always up to date on the latest advances in most categories, but have recently realized I have been neglecting the one subject I should know the most about: what’s happening with ME? Realizing I needed some serious help navigating the next phase of my life, I asked some friends for recommendations and kept

hearing the same two names: Dr. Christy Guepet and Dr. Angie McCool-Pearson. This pair has serendipitously united forces and run a practice together created by women, for women: Southern Women’s Specialists. Let’s dive in!

Q&A Q. CHARLOTTE: Christy and Angie, share with

me a little bit about the concept of your practice.

Dr. Guepet: We have been partners for several years, and the two of us established Southern Women’s Specialists in March of 2020. With an all-female staff of more than 20, we understand women’s lives, struggles, goals, and health. Our practice was created for women, by women, to improve the lives of our patients and offer solutions to problems that commonly impact quality of life.

Dr. McCool-Pearson: With our deep passion for women’s health, we are committed to delivering the most comprehensive and compassionate care for women of all ages. It is our mission to treat every patient with the same level of thoroughness and precision as we would our own family using the most innovative, effective, and least-invasive treatment options available.

Q. CHARLOTTE: Now that we’ve gotten the

pleasantries out of the way, explain what it means when you talk about the phrase “vaginal health.”

Dr. McCool-Pearson: As we age, we can see things like hair thinning, skin changes, and weight gain or redistribution, and we can feel the hot flashes, mood swings, and lack of sex drive, but vaginal and vulvar health are not things we typically notice or think about. Women are well aware that we can get Botox and fillers to fight the appearance of aging and we can exercise to tone our bodies, but most don’t know our vaginas also age.

Dr. Guepet: The tissues of the vagina, vulva, and bladder are very sensitive to the estrogen withdrawal that begins even before menopause. This can cause symptoms like vaginal burning, dryness, painful intercourse, and incontinence. So many women are unaware that these symptoms are common during the years leading up to and during menopause because it’s so difficult to talk about.

Our practice is designed to make these conversations easier and provide education and solutions for intimate health issues that historically have had few treatment options. Hormonal treatments, radio frequency, and platelet-rich plasma procedures (in addition to education about weight, diet, and Kegel exercises) can improve and maintain tissue strength, quality, and function. We regularly see life changing results with these interventions.

CHARLOTTE: I have to say, I know several

women who are over the moon about their pellets!

Q. CHARLOTTE: Seriously though, the hair

thing — thinning on your head and popping out on your chin… it’s growing in the wrong places!

I already take some of the recommended supplements for women my age such as B-12, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, and calcium, but is there anything for hair?

Dr. Guepet & Dr. McCool-Pearson: Biotin!

Dr. McCool-Pearson: Genetics do play a part and aging simply causes hair thinning and loss. It’s not just a man thing; it happens to women, too. I counsel my patients to avoid daily washing, ponytails, excessive heat from hair tools, and products with alcohol. Also, many women don’t know, but topical treatments such as Rogaine for Women exist and can help.

Charlotte Kilborn Carey Q. CHARLOTTE: I’ve recently heard of vulvar

cancer that can occur as we age. Is this a thing?

Dr. McCool-Pearson: Yes, and that’s why women need to come in for an exam every year (even if they’re not getting a Pap smear) until age 65, and then every two years until age 80. A gynecological exam includes a thorough exam of the vulvar and vaginal skin.

Dr. Guepet: With regular exams, we can usually

prevent cancers of the vulva and vagina by identifying and removing suspicious lesions that could be pre-cancerous. Cancer prevention is a primary goal of routine healthcare, and pelvic exams are an important part of prevention.

Q. CHARLOTTE: Clearly, I’m heading into

menopause (all the telltale signs are there), but seriously, acne, hot flashes, PMS, and awful cramping all at the same time? It’s too much! What the heck is going on here?

Dr. Guepet: As we age, our ovaries decrease production of estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone, which can cause all that you mentioned in addition to thinning hair, vaginal symptoms, sleep problems, and more, typically starting in our 40s.

Hormonal acne can be effectively treated with a medication called Aldactone. It is well-tolerated and can also be used to suppress facial hair and male pattern hair thinning.

Dr. McCool-Pearson: In addition to other hormone therapies, we’re advocates of hormone pellets to treat the falling estrogen and testosterone levels in menopause. We check each patient’s level of testosterone and estrogen and create a pellet just for them. Inserted in a small incision typically on the patients back side, we find they are absorbed well and are a convenient and physiologic way to deliver hormones. If after repleting hormones our patients still don’t feel well, we look for other causes of their symptoms and often refer them to their primary care doctor for an evaluation.

Q. CHARLOTTE: Hold on now… let’s not skip

over the unwanted facial hair! I don’t have time to get a lip wax every week (frankly, they are a bit painful). Suggestions?

Dr. Guepet: Thankfully, we have options! Laser hair removal is very effective. Vaniqa is a topical medication that slows down and thins the growth of unwanted hair on the face, and Aldactone fights the impact of androgens on hair follicles.

Dr. McCool-Pearson: I tell my patients to invest in a 10X magnifying mirror to check their chins and lips daily. Hair growth on the face starts in the 40s when our vision starts to decline. Using testosterone therapy can exacerbate this growth, so it’s important to stay on top of unwanted facial hair with the things that Christy mentioned above and your mirror at home.

Q. CHARLOTTE: As I’m listening and absorb-

ing the plethora of issues associated with women’s health, I’m at the point in life where I’ll try anything once. And in the name of good journalism, I’m going to have to admit that I, too, have been down in the trenches of urinary incontinence. The fear of a little accident at a dinner party while having a good laugh (or a good sneeze, for that matter) is just unacceptable to me anymore! I never want to have to run to the loo with my legs crossed hoping to make it there ever again! What can we do so we don’t have to live in fear anymore?

Dr. McCool-Pearson: First of all, leaking a few drops of urine is not uncommon. But it should be addressed and there are several surgical and nonsurgical options depending on the severity.

Think everything from physical therapy to radio frequency technology. Most don’t realize how effective these other options can be. It all goes to back to our pelvic floor muscles which are weakened by things such as pregnancy, childbirth, aging, weight gain, and even chronic coughing.

Dr. Guepet: The female pelvis was created wide open for child birth. Our pelvic floor is like a hammock of collagen, ligaments, and muscles holding up all the contents of the abdomen and pelvis. As we age, our collagen and muscles

become more lax and weaker. The pull of gravity in addition to the effects of age, genetics, and often weight gain, results in the “dropping” of pelvic organs like the uterus, bladder, or intestines into the vagina. Medically, this is called prolapse. Prolapse doesn’t always cause symptoms, but can cause the presence of a noticeable bulge, pressure, or the bladder symptoms. The strength of the pelvic floor is another “out of sight, out of mind” situation for women. Considering maintenance of pelvic floor health at a young age with Kegels and weight control can improve long-term health and quality of life. We commonly refer patients for pelvic floor physical therapy, which is a niche within P.T. that addresses this intimate issue very effectively. I wish all women had access to this option.

Dr. McCool-Pearson: In terms of treatments, we do offer solutions. One option is a unique technology, FormaV, that improves function and revitalizes the pelvic floor tissues using radio frequency energy. Everyone needs to get comfortable with the idea of radio frequency. I know it can sound “new age,” but the results are incredible. Also, we’ve had great success with the addition of vaginal platelet-rich plasma injections (also known as the O shot), as well as micro-needling to stimulate collagen growth to revitalize that area with your own cells and create a tighter mechanism overall.

Q. CHARLOTTE: I keep reading women my

age lose interest in sex and don’t see themselves as sexual creatures, but I’m more comfortable in my own skin now when I’m in the worst shape of my life. We don’t have to worry about getting pregnant, we’re not trying to get pregnant, and wonderful sexual experiences should be the gift we give ourselves (and not out of some guilt we may feel to appease our partners). Why is it so hard for women to get out of that antiquated mindset and make sex about themselves for a change?

Dr. McCool-Pearson: Many women come to see us regarding a lack of interest in sex or for sexual dysfunction. A lack of interest can usually be attributed to a change in hormone levels or even for something as simple as a lack of sleep. However, sexual dysfunction has a wide definition, is very common, and best of all, is very treatable. Whether you can’t orgasm, have a decreased libido, experience pain during intercourse, or don’t respond to sexual stimulation, these can often be cured with the right treatment.

Dr. Guepet: Female intimate health issues are complex and involve multiple factors like underlying medical issues, medications, tissue quality, nerve function, blood flow, hormone deficiencies, life stressors, anxiety, depression, relationship problems, and self-esteem. Developing a plan to address sexual dysfunction has to consider all of these factors and requires talking about the difficult parts of life. Hormonal evaluation and treatments are often an important piece of this complex puzzle. Testosterone treatment can improve energy, mental sharpness, motivation, and libido. The pellets that Angie refers to are an excellent option for testosterone treatment, providing a stable and steady delivery of hormones. Radio frequency is a very safe technology that stimulates collagen strength and growth and improves nerve function and blood flow to tissues all over the body. For female intimate health, we use a device called

FormaV on the Votiva platform. We see significant improvement in not only vulvar and vaginal tissue quality and function, but bladder function as well. This means less vaginal and vulvar pain, dryness, tearing, and infections, as well as improvements in urinary leakage, frequency, urgency, and bladder infections. Radio frequency technology is combined with micro-needling in the Morpheus-8 procedure that we offer as well, providing dramatic skin tightening as well as fat melting all over the body. For intimate health, we use Morpheus-8 to decrease vulvar laxity that can result in chafing and discomfort.

Dr. McCool-Pearson: So much of what we do is truly wholistic, and that is why we see lifechanging results, meaning what we use to treat incontinence can also be used to treat sexual dysfunction and more. For example, Morpheus-8 can be used for intimacy issues as well as for reversing signs of aging all over the body. It tightens, resurfaces, and melts fat, resulting in improved tissue texture, smoothing of wrinkles, as well as contouring areas of specific concern. It’s as good for the vulvar tissue as it is for face and neck skin.

Q. CHARLOTTE: This leads me to my next

question. My thyroid went out after my third child so I’ve been dealing with hypothyroidism for a long time. Interestingly, I find this is the least talked about subject that effects so many women.

It seems most women don’t know to get their thyroid checked when they have cloudy thinking, loss of energy, and/or depression, and by the time you figure it out, it’s too late to know what your thyroid’s healthy baseline number was from your younger days when it was functioning at its peak.

Should we get a baseline test when younger so we can make a comparison for future treatments?

Dr. Guepet: Thyroid dysfunction in women is very common. I’ve been asked recently about baseline testing in the 20s, so there must be a buzz out there about it. However, what our body needs in our 20s hormonally is not what it needs in our 40s and 50s. Using that benchmark would create an unrealistic bar of expectation for the rest of our lives.

women, we just keep going even when we’re not feeling well. We will downplay fatigue, which is a tough symptom to diagnose, as everyone is tired.

For us, we find success in listening. We ask the right questions, truly listen, and do thorough testing to look for those red flags. We also teach our patients to listen to their bodies and not accept symptoms so easily.

Dr. Guepet: We, too, are working moms in our 40s and 50s balancing changes in our bodies, minds, marriages, aging parents, and children.

This allows us to read in between the lines. We are living through much of what our patients are going through and come to the physician-patient relationship from a place of true understanding.

Q. CHARLOTTE: Many of us are caretakers.

From our mothers to our daughters, what female healthcare regimen do you recommend?

Dr. McCool-Pearson: As a rule, if your life expectancy is 10 years or less, you don’t need to do mammograms and Pap smears as preventative health maintenance, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get examined if you are having issues or a history of skin changes on the vulva or vagina.

Dr. Guepet: Starting at age 21 it is recommended you start annual gynecological exams and every other year at 65. However, we strongly suggest mammograms every year.

CHARLOTTE: What’s happening with mammograms? Are they safer in terms of radiation exposure?

Q.

Dr. McCool-Pearson: There has always been a small amount of radiation. Radiation exposure is based on the amount you’ll receive in a lifetime.

Think dental x-rays, various scans, etc., and that is what compounds your exposure. This is one of the reasons why routine mammography is delayed until age 40 with a baseline at age 35.

Dr. Guepet: Mammograms get better and more specific as we get older because the composition of our breast tissue changes with age. Our breasts become less fibrous and fattier over time, which makes imaging better with less callbacks for abnormal studies. Self-breast exams are also an important component to women’s health because they significantly improve early detection of cancer.

Early detection leads to more treatment success.

Q. CHARLOTTE: It’s a little-known fact that

there is a protective thyroid guard you can request when getting an x-ray. It’s my pet peeve that it’s not standard protocol. Anywho, since weight plays such an important role in our overall gynecological health and other matters such as bone density, how do you advise your patients?

Dr. Guepet: We encourage our patients to seek

balance in life (which is our lifelong struggle as well). As women, we spend so much time focusing on our responsibilities to family, church, community, and work that we fail to set aside time to assess and meet our own needs. A balanced lifestyle attending to nutrition, exercise, sleep, hydration, and quality time doing things that feed our souls takes concerted effort. I wish the answer to weight gain were easier, but after a negative medical evaluation, I consistently recommend limiting carbohydrates. Carbohydrates increase insulin, which is a hormone that directs our bodies to store fuel as fat. Decreasing carbohydrate intake will, in turn, decrease insulin.

Dr. McCool-Pearson: Obviously, some things are and should be managed by a patient’s primary care physician, but we pride ourselves in providing options and solutions for improving the overall quality of life. We truly take a wholistic approach to women’s gynecologic health.

Q. CHARLOTTE: I do feel like life can be

better, and the only person inhibiting you is you. I think women tend to underestimate the mind/body

Dr. McCool-Pearson: We routinely check thyroid levels with all of our patients. You don’t want to overmedicate or overtreat. A lot of these symptoms are actually due to a lack of sleep and the stress in our daily lives.

Q. CHARLOTTE: That’s so interesting, as I’ve

Dr. McCool-Pearson: I’m not familiar with that study. Not wanting to discredit male physicians, women often naturally open up more to each other, as we can relate. A strength and weakness of 54 ACCESS Magazine / January 2021

done a lot of reading regarding my symptoms and many sources conclude they can be attributed to lack of sleep. Apparently, as we get older our sleep patterns do change, and yet sleep is the most important thing we can do for ourselves as we age.

Also, many women my age get sleep apnea, which left untreated can lead to heart issues. Furthermore, I also read women treated by female physicians for heart-related issues have a better chance of survival.

Tell me you’re proud of your accomplishments!

Dr. Guepet: We really don’t see ourselves like that! We are in the same trenches all women are in each day. Taking care of our families and problem-solving with patients day-to-day is not only an honor, but also hard work. No two bodies are alike, and everyone’s lives are so different. It is my mission to use my gifts to help patients optimize their health so they can focus on their missions in life. I just try to get out of the way so that God can do his work!

Dr. McCool-Pearson: A big part of our success lies in our commitment to bringing the latest equipment and technologies to the women of the Bay Area. We have routinely stayed abreast of surgical and non-surgical advancements so that we can offer excellent gynecological care in the operating room and the office. Most importantly, we’re good friends who respect and support each other. We are just women who want to support other women.

Q. CHARLOTTE:

Last one… the vaccine. Yes or no?

Dr. Guepet & Dr. McCool-Pearson: Life is not easy, so get the Covid-19 vaccine to avoid it becoming harder! We both participated in the Pfizer trial, we’re doing fine, and we recommend the Covid-19 vaccine without hesitation.

CHARLOTTE: Still beaming from asking all

those questions and from learning about the many modern care options available, I just want to add that I’ve been wanting to interview Dr. Guepet and Dr. McCool-Pearson for quite some time. Now armed with information and heading into 2021, it’s the perfect time to change our old ways and look to the future. After this candid talk, I’m convinced this is the beginning of a new wellness path for me and I encourage all to follow. Knowledge truly is power, and I hope you each feel a little more like Superwoman after hearing from these dedicated doctors who are in all our corners. ON THE FRONTLINES 2020 has been an extremely taxing year on many, seemingly changing all of our lives overnight, but at the forefront are thousands of women making positive impacts on the lives of others — sacrificing their time, mental health, and physical wellbeing along the way. So when it came to an issue about empowering women, we jumped at the opportunity to treat some of these selfless women to a day of pampering.

We dressed them up in the most gorgeous clothes, gave them first-class hair and makeup treatments, and just plain gave them a break to be their authentic, happy, and carefree selves (even if only for a couple of hours).

riginally from Louisville, Miss., Kylie Chambers proudly serves as the Social Services Director for the Kensington Health and Rehabilitation Center in Mobile, advocating for residents in a long-term care facility. Having graduated from Mississippi State in 2002 where she began work with youth with behavioral problems before transitioning to the elderly with mental health issues, Kylie currently works in long-

term placement where she has happily been for the last 10 years. Truly in love with her role, Kylie says the best part about her job is the opportunity to serve and assist others.

“My job is very gratifying,” she shares. “I love helping others and seeing others happy for something you have done to help them,” she says, adding in her free time prior to the pandemic she also dedicated much of her time to Semmes Elementary School, where she previously served on the school board.

F

or other young women dreaming of following in her footsteps, Kylie says the key to success is being compassionate and willing to help — no matter what. And when it comes to being a leader in her own life and work, Kylie says you have to be willing to do exactly what you expect your team to do. “It’s all about teamwork. Being a team player is essential for success,” she says.

Like thousands of Americans, Kylie received the unfortunate diagnosis of COVID-19 on July 8th of this year. “I was extremely sick, and it was terrifying not knowing what was going to happen,” she recalls. Thankfully, Kylie has since recovered and has walked away with a greater zest for life. “I love making people laugh — it is truly the best medicine,” she shares. “I would love to be a comedian one day!”

Married to Delungus Chambers, the couple has two girls: Haleigh Patrice (10) and Kennedy Kay (6). Kylie adores spending time with her family, saying the most exciting adventure of her life has been mothering her girls. She loves binge watching television — especially the show “All of Us” — and says she can’t live without happiness… but then again, who can?

WILSON NURSE MANAGER AT SPRINGHILL MEDICAL CENTER

C

OVID-19 frontline worker Abby Wilson serves as the Nurse Manager at Springhill Medical Center over one of the COVID-19 units, having witnessed more heartache and strain in the last nine months than most can fathom. “As a COVID-19 nurse, I see the struggle and the effects the virus has on individuals in a very close and real way,” she says. “Now more than ever, nurses must be physically, mentally, and spiritually strong. While it is difficult at times and seeing so much loss is a heavy weight, nursing is more than a job — it’s a calling,” she says, noting that COVID-19 has affected almost everyone in some way this year. “If you have a chance, thank a nurse,” she urges. “Send

a note or a text and let them know how you appreciate them and that you see what they are sacrificing daily. This means so much to a COVID-19 nurse.”

Abby received her master’s degree in Nursing Administration in 2014 and is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Nursing Informatics at the University of South Alabama. She originally began her work as a geriatric psych nurse but stepped into her current role of Nurse Manager in 2018. Having been a nurse since 2012, Abby has learned many valuable lessons, the most valuable of which is to be a great listener. “Whether listening to patients or employees, it’s an important skill to have,” she shares.

ith such a physically and emotionally exhausting job, Abby has tried to stay positive by focusing on the good things in life. “Keeping a positive attitude helps to make the low moments not quite as difficult and brings even more value to the high moments,” she shares, citing her highest moment of 2020 as the day she gave birth to a healthy baby girl. “I am so grateful to have such a loving and blessed family.”

Besides her career, Abby also is a dedicated member of Destination Church where her husband, Kyle Wilson, serves as a pastor.

“I enjoy helping in outreach and making a difference in our local community,” she says, but admits she makes the most impact as a mother to her two daughters: Emma Rose (4), and Sarah Kate (7 months).

A role model in her own right, Abby says her aunt, Karen O’Bannon, has been one of her biggest inspirations in life. “She was a tremendous support when I was in nursing school,” Abby shares. “She is a smart, driven, hardworking woman. She opened up her home to me during nursing school and was a daily encourager. If not for her, I would not be the person I am today,” she beams. A lover of the outdoors, Abby also enjoys running and spending time outside with her family. “My husband and I enjoy visiting national parks, and one of my most exciting adventures was skydiving outside of Zion National Park,” she shares. “This was an amazing experience, and I created a memory that will last a lifetime!” Her goal?

To one day visit every national park in the United States.

MS-Wright Preparatory School Preschool Teacher Elizabeth Otts is tasked each year with guiding and fostering the education of her precious 3-year-old students — a call she’s been answering for the last eight years.

After graduating with a degree in Early Childhood Education in 2001, Elizabeth accepted a teaching position right out of college at St. Ignatius but opted to take a break upon starting her own family with husband McCrary Otts to dedicate her time to the upbringing of her own children shortly thereafter. “When my twins were

3 years old I went back to school to get a master’s degree in Early Childhood Education by taking night classes at Spring Hill College,” Elizabeth shares, who has a total of three children: Virginia (16), and twins Mac and Ella (12). A volunteer at heart, Elizabeth admits teaching has always been a huge passion of hers and remains one of her favorite aspects of the job. “You never know who or how you are impacting someone’s life,” Elizabeth says.

“At such an early stage in my students’ lives I get to nurture and form their foundation. I am blessed to have a career that I love.”

B

ut like many schools and teachers across the globe, Elizabeth was forced to rethink her way of connecting with her students once COVID-19 hit the U.S. “We taught our students virtually from March until May of 2020,” she shares. “As you can probably imagine, that is a difficult thing to do with 3-year-olds since most of what we do requires social interaction and hands-on guidance,” she admits. “It was extremely difficult not being with my students every day.”

Though emotionally, financially, and medically challenging for many, Elizabeth worked hard to remain positive throughout the school year by focusing on her family and her students. “I truly enjoyed the spring being home with my family and having some downtime together,” she shares, citing the beach, traveling, exercising, and going out to dinner with her husband as some of her favorite things to do with her family whenever the opportunity arises.

“I’m extremely grateful UMS-Wright had the foresight a few years ago to focus resources on a virtual platform (which was successfully utilized in 2020). That commitment has played an enormous role in my children continuing their education and my ability to help my students continue foundation-molding. Without UMS-Wright’s commitment I’m afraid those accomplishments may not have been achieved, so as a parent and a teacher I want to thank the school for its leadership and commitment to excellence.”

orking as a Physician Assistant at Alabama Medical Group in their Internal Medicine Department, Connie Vereen has seen the effects of COVID-19 firsthand. When the virus first hit, the walk-in clinic in which she worked transitioned to a “COVID clinic,” with the need to separate those with the virus from those not yet infected. “We were limited initially with the lack of testing available and were basically treating patients based on symptoms and advising them to isolate and proceed to ER if symptoms worsened or they developed respiratory compromise,” Connie says. “With rapid testing now available in

the office setting, we are able to diagnose immediately and treat accordingly.” Though many workers in the medical field are feeling the extreme toll of COVID, Connie is grateful to not feel overwhelmed by her caseload. “Some days are pretty hectic for sure, but I am able to ‘leave it at work,’” she admits. “But then again, we are not seeing the critically ill patients in my office setting.

I imagine it is much more emotionally exhausting for hospital workers.” Having worked in healthcare for the past 34 years, Connie has arguably learned a lot, sharing that you never stop learning, especially when it comes to the medical field.

hen it comes to the true definition of beauty, Connie says it is the ability to appreciate the blessings you have and having empathy for others — something she uses every day in her field. “All too often, our society seems to be focused on obtaining ‘more’ instead of sitting back and being thankful for what we already have,” she says, adding perhaps another defining factor of inner beauty is one’s positive attitude — something Connie is overflowing with. “In most cases, we have little control over what the future holds, and there is no sense in obsessing over what tomorrow will bring,” she shares.

Connie has been married to her wonderful husband William Vereen for the past 34 years. The couple has two adult children: Ashley Vereen Bice and Mark Vereen, as well as two granddaughters. Having lived on the water most of her adult life, Connie enjoys boating, fishing, and visiting the beautiful beaches of the Gulf Coast. One can often find her pouring over the pages of a good book or enjoying her guilty pleasure (Blue Bell Ice Cream) while watching an episode of “Yellowstone” or “Criminal Minds.”

riginally from Mobile, Josie Baumgarten has dedicated the past five years to her career as a Physician Assistant in the inpatient setting at Springhill Medical Center for Alabama Medical Group where she admits patients from the ER, consults on patients after surgery, and helps discharge patients home or to rehab. “I was really lucky that Alabama Medical Group took a

chance on a new graduate, and I have been there ever since,” she says. Working in a hospital setting means Josie has seen the impact of COVID-19 — changing the way she and her coworkers see and treat patients.

And though it has been a stressful year for everyone, Josie says she’s stayed positive knowing that even on her worst days, she still has so much for which to be thankful.

W

hen asked her definition of true beauty, Josie says, “True beauty comes from within. People will always be able to tell what is in your heart.” Of course, positive leadership qualities are equally as important in her line of work.

“I believe a true leader can be found in the trenches with their troops,” she shares. “I know I cannot do half of what our nurses do, but if there is ever a chance for me to lighten their load or help with a patient, I try to do what I can.” Josie truly loves her job, and says the best piece of advice she’s ever received is to never be too proud to ask for help.

Having grown up in Mobile, Josie says she has a strong affinity for seafood and the water, stating her favorite way to spend her off days is hanging out with friends on the Gulf’s sandy shores. And if she didn’t have to work? Well, you guessed it — she would spend every minute lounging on the beach!

CRABTREE BELFOREST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHER

F

airhope native Shaska Crabtree has the honor of serving as a 4th grade teacher at Belforest Elementary School in Daphne, which opened its doors for the first time this year… in the middle of a pandemic. “I get the opportunity to teach, collaborate, grow, interact, and learn with my colleagues and students every day,” she shares. “I strive to create a caring and engaging environment in my classroom, and I hope that my students can see their full potential while learning every day,” says Shaska. This year marks Shaska’s eighth year of teaching, and even though it looks much different than years past, she’s overwhelmingly grateful to be

back with her little learners. “COVID-19 changed the education field overnight,” she shares. “I started off 2020 thinking that we would be out for a couple of weeks, then a month, and finally I learned we would not return to school for the remainder of the school year. I was heartbroken. I did not feel I had the opportunity to close out our school year in the proper way. I feel like my class last year will always be my unfinished class,” she admits. “However, with change come great opportunities. I believe the level of innovation that the education field has made is inspiring. COVID-19 pushed me out of my comfort zone, and for that, I am thankful.”

I

n a field largely dominated by women, Shaska says working with other women is very gratifying and empowering. “I love seeing women coming together and using their strengths to collaborate and create ways to better the lives of the children in our community,” she says. “It’s so special.” And when it comes to serving as a role model for her students, Shaska says, “Great leaders have the courage to take chances and believe in the power of ‘yet.’ They have integrity regardless of the situation, and great leaders believe in the team. They trust the opinions and ideas of those around them. I do my best to keep this mindset throughout my professional and personal life, and while working to embody these qualities, I teach my own daughters and students how to be leaders in their own worlds,” she says.

Shaska is married to her amazing husband Lance Crabtree, and the pair have two beautiful daughters: Laiken (6), and Saylor (4). Like many Bay Area natives, Shaska says there’s just something special about living so close to the water and enjoys traveling down to the beach at every opportunity. She also adores going on fun camping trips with her family. “We like to call them our adventures,” she shares.

“We always make sure to do something that challenges us mentally and physically on our trips.” And of course, Shaska says she owes everything in her life to God, especially in such a crazy year. “Knowing that He has every situation under control, even when I can’t see it, lets me know that everything will be as it should.”

What is a facelift? Seems like a simple question, but very often I find the term is misunderstood. Patients come in asking for a facelift not fully understanding what is involved. Typically, the patient really means, “I want my face to look younger.”

Patients think when they get a facelift it will rejuvenate their entire face, including their brows, cheeks, eyelids, and skin. But to a surgeon, the term means something quite different.

or a surgeon planning to rejuvenate a face, there are multiple procedures that achieve separate goals. When surgeons refer to a facelift, we are specifically talking about rejuvenating the jowls and lower face and neck.

This usually involves incisions which are carefully placed around each ear as well as an incision placed under the chin. Through these incisions we can improve your jaw and neckline.

Unfortunately, a facelift does not do anything for the brows and eyelids. Surgery to improve the eyelids is called a blepharoplasty.

This involves removing sagging skin and bulging fat pads of the upper and lower eyelids. To improve the brow position and achieve more elevation, a brow lift is required. Although a facelift will help with some of the deeper lines of the skin in the lower face and neck, it really does not improve skin texture and tone. Instead, such results typically require laser skin resurfacing or a deeper chemical peel. Further, as we age, we lose volume in some of the fat pads of the face, and often the cheeks and temple regions are the most deficient in volume. Restoring this lost volume can be done with filler, though it is preferred to use your own fat to achieve long lasting results.

To obtain the best outcome, your surgeon will often recommend a combination of procedures. Sometimes patients will say they worry about looking “overdone,” but just because your surgeon may recommend multiple different procedures does not mean you will look like you’ve had too much work done. Rather, it is when one tries to achieve more than a procedure is designed to accomplish that people tend to look overdone. In fact, sometimes by only opting to have the lower face and neck done, one actually achieves a more unnatural look because the upper face now doesn’t match the lower face.

It is very important to clearly define your goals when talking to your surgeon regarding facial surgery. But don’t be offended if they discuss other parts of your face during your consultation, as they are likely just trying to achieve improvement in the overall aging of the face. After all, turning back the clock takes more than one might think.

WHY DID YOU PURSUE INVISALIGN?

I never had braces growing up. I watched myself back a lot on camera, and my teeth would always stick out to me.

WHAT WAS THE DECIDING FACTOR TO COMMIT TO TREATMENT?

After I started my job in Mobile, I was making a little more money, didn’t have any debt, and was single with no family to worry about. I thought, “If not now, then I’ll never do it.” The cost was comparable to braces and the payment plan explained by Dr. Pickett’s wonderful team really sealed the deal for me.

WAS IT DIFFICULT TO INCORPORATE TREATMENT INTO YOUR DAILY ROUTINE? Treatment really was no problem for me. I wanted straight teeth so badly that I wore my Invisalign as much as possible! I only have to change my trays once a week.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF INVISALIGN?

I loved watching my teeth move week by week. It was very satisfying!

WHAT WAS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE PART OF INVISALIGN? My teeth would get sore when I moved to my next aligner. It was still worth it because it only lasted a day or two and then it was fine.

I did wear them on an occasional live shoot out in the field, but nobody ever noticed!

WHAT IS YOUR BEST ADVICE TO SOMEONE INTERESTED IN INVISALIGN TREATMENT?

DO IT! You really have control of straightening your teeth and it’s just so worth it. Everyone looks better and feels more confident with straight teeth… I know I do! I look back and it’s crazy to see how much Invisalign straightened my teeth and also changed the shape of my mouth. I am still amazed and so glad I did it.
