From Our Groesbeck Chamber President I would like to thank the chamber for welcoming me as the new President of the Groesbeck Chamber of Commerce. I would also like to thank Joan McEntyre for assisting me in the transition, she has done a fantastic job. That said, I would like to share what I believe our mission encompasses.

I believe that the chamber should make quality of life better and make the community businesses stronger through community participation. I also believe that we need to build a business climate that encourages job growth and workforce development steeped in Texas traditions that will usher in prosperity in our neck of the woods during these trying times. Let’s face facts, we are a mom-andpop business region, and we welcome these independent business owners with open arms as well as any brand store who chooses to be part of our community.

We are a non-profit, membership-based business association serving our community in Groesbeck and surrounding areas.

Our purpose is to provide value for our community businesses to enhance their prosperity, increasing opportunities, and building a workforce that will sustain our community through good times and not so good times. promotional opportunities, educational programs, and other business services as well as representing their interests within city and county limits.

We will strive to bring a Youth Leadership Program, an exciting, new, and educational experience for rising high school juniors and seniors introduced by the Chamber so students can learn about the diversity and complexities of the community. This will be accomplished through participation in a new structured program (TBD in Collaboration with Groesbeck ISD) that will meet once a month during school hours, all while earning community service hours.

Students are encouraged to review their course load when deciding to apply for the Youth Leadership program as acceptance into the class would mean that attendance is mandatory. Building new leaders and teaching them civic duties will pay dividends in the future.

While we are not part of city or county government we can still have a voice that will lend credence and co-operation with the city and county by working with our economic development and city manager to enhance business growth.

As a collective business organization, it is incumbent on each of us to participate and ensure that all of our businesses are successful by lending a helping hand when needed and sharing successful ideas through networking. Economic development begets prosperity and sustains growth.

B2B versus B2

Businesses have 2 distinct business models to sell their goods and services from. It is a matter of time versus volume and profit. The 1st model is called the Business-to-Business model or B2B. The second model is called the Business-to- Consumer model or B2C. For example, in a Business-2-Business model there is an apple tree farm that yields a large number of bushels of apples to sell. The owner needs to decide if he or she wants to sell these apples to other businesses, like grocery stores or restaurants or sell directly to the consumer. If he decides to sell B2B he will have to sell them on a wholesale platform using multiple tier volumes and discounts according to the volume to be purchased. If the business owner decides to sell directly to the consumer B2C he or she has to set a retail price and has the added extra expense of setting up storefronts or other platforms to sell to the public.

There are also other business models that a business can emulate for their services, products, or ideas. The keys to success reside in a well thought out strategic business plan. Business owners need to set their milestones according to their abilities. That said a strategic business plan should have four components.

Anyone who has ever written a resume will recognize these components due to the similarity in the layout.

The first component is your Executive summary. The Executive summary should include a summary of everything you hope to accomplish with your business and reflect your experience in the business including what legal status your company falls under (LLC, Sole Proprietor, etcetera) along with your products or services you intend on offering consumers. The second component is your marketing plan that includes your targeted consumer demographics, your plan for reaching and acquiring your targeted demographic customers and retain your customers as well as new business through quality of service.

The third component is your operations plan or what platform you intend to use to reach those customers and sell your products or services. This component will introduce your management staff and their responsibilities in the operation plan and the fourth component is your financial plan to start your business and sustain it through all scenarios. Keeping up with profit and expenses is a monumental task and is the heartbeat of the company so make sure you have what you need before you start.

Businesses require attention and creation, and maintenance should be approached with a business plan that will ensure the success of the business.

Business plans should never be complicated and if the business owner sticks to the basics he or she can add or subtract according to their needs. Always have a plan because failing to plan is planning to fail.

2022 Groesbeck Heritage Festival Update, new location announced

There is exciting news for the 2022 Heritage Festival! All of the Heritage Festival events will be taking place at Old Fort Parker this May! The carnival, bands, games and contests, vendors, children’s activities, demonstrations, and other activities will all take place at the fort. There is plenty of space for activities and parking there. The only activity not held at the fort will be the national ranch sorting competition, which will be taking place at the

Limestone County fairgrounds.

Please consider sponsoring all or part of an event for the Heritage Festival. The festival will take place May 26-29, with most of the fun taking place on Saturday, May 28.

Citizenship and CiviC Responsibilities

As a citizen of the United States of America, born or naturalized, we have unalienable rights and privileges that were earned some 250 years before us, resulting in a protected society. Those rights and privileges were valiantly fought for and preserved by those who came before us. The instrument that protects us is called the United States Constitution.

Simply put, the Constitution defines our rights as citizens and tells the Government how it will govern us through our representation of elected Congressmen, Senators and other public officials who write our laws, determine how our taxes are spent and give us a Judicial system to determine justice.

Freedom comes with a price, and that price is called Civic Responsibility. Our first and most important civic duty is to support and defend our constitution because without it we have no rights or privileges, such as, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, the right to bear arms and other important protections. Somewhere along the line our elected officials have forgotten that we the people are their employers. We the people send these elected officials to represent us, not to enrich themselves.

Duty for each voter to research the character of those we vote for to uncover greed and dishonesty before we bestow honor and trust. Staying informed on the issues that affect our community is one of the most important civic duties and it calls for due diligence of the voter.

We must participate in the democratic process if we are to remain free because socialism and communism are once again the wolf at our door.

Respecting and obeying ALL of our laws in our society is an important civic duty because in a lawless society chaos rules. Respecting the rights, beliefs and opinions of others is also an important civic duty because without respect we become a nation of tribes and are divided, as the old saying goes, we can fall as a nation divided or stand as a nation united.

Above all else we need to remember that judgement is reserved for God, and it is the character of the individual that God sees in the heart and nothing more. We are a giving people and care for others, but we must first take care of ourselves, support our families, and educate our children to carry on a future as intended by our forefathers who created the free Nation that we reside in, so be a participant in the community because this is our family.

BUSINESS IN GROESBECK - 2022 - ARE YOU READY? TK Presley Groesbeck EDC Executive Director 2020 and 2021 has seen much of the previous 3 years of work come to the forefront. Existing companies have grown while technology innovators have moved in to call our little town home. With more opportunities for family-supporting jobs, press-attracting businesses and exciting new recreational amenities just around the corner, we’re seeing renewed interest in almost every other sector imaginable. As of this printing, there is dirt turning for business expansions on both state highways running through town. Both aiming to double the size of current operations. We’re days away from closing out the first year with a historic 7-figure level of sales tax generation. Slowly and quietly but surely - the once little known “Friendly City” is becoming a favored place to be. This time next year, our median income level will be edging up and to the right as will our local traffic count numbers. Chamber of Commerce Structure and Organization Each chapter of a chamber is governed by a board of directors who advise the chapter on strategies and policies determined by the chapter's mission. The board manages day-to-day affairs and updates the chapter policies. Board members, also referred to as an executive council, are elected within each chapter. Most chapters have an acting president and CEO, for example. Members of the board are elected based on their leadership experience, business background, and ability to execute chapter goals.

In addition to a governing board of directors, a chapter will have at least one employee. Some chapters may have more than one employee and be structured like a business. Employees work to market the chapter, in overseeing memberships, and in tracking the chapter's finances.

In addition to the employees, a chapter has committees to focus on executing specific goals based on the chapter's mission — such as education, environment, or healthcare. Members of the chapter can volunteer for these committees to get more involved.

How a Chamber of Commerce Functions A chamber of commerce chapter is made up of a dues-based membership. Each chapter offers different levels of membership, along with unique volunteer opportunities and a dues structure.

Each chapter is designated as a 501(c)(6) corporation under the federal tax law. This means a chapter is a nonprofit entity with the authority to represent its membership in matters of policy and debate (unlike charitable organizations that do not act on behalf of members).

Dues are required by each member to contribute to the overall operating costs. In addition to dues, a chamber can raise money to cover additional operating costs by holding fundraising activities and charging fees to chamber events. These costs help the chapter stay operational since multiple businesses rely on their local chamber for networking and resources.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE

A chapter can be found at the local, state, city, regional,

or national level. Some chapters are even associated with specific neighborhoods within a community. Still others are formed to represent a group of specific business interests. Examples of this include female business owners chapters or the National Black Chamber of Commerce.

Since each chapter has its own mission focused on economic vitality throughout a designated area, each can support different industries or initiatives. For example, some focus on economic development while others connect a specific community to local businesses. While each chamber acts independently, multiple chambers can join together to form a larger, collective group serving a similar interest. For instance, several county chapters can join together to form a larger regional chapter to pool together resources.
