A COVID-19 Q & A with Derek Williams How has the Milledgeville / Baldwin County community been impacted by COVID-19 from an economic basis?

in person to take care of any need. Our business model is based on cutting edge technology paired with warm, personal customer service.

COVID-19 has certainly had an impact on this community, as would any crisis as far reaching and unexpected as this one.

Many of our local businesses were forced to close their doors and furlough or lay off employees, at least temporarily, as consumers quarantined in their homes while the pandemic’s range and scope were assessed. Businesses and individuals who did not have significant reserves of savings and capital have struggled mightily.

Century Bank & Trust reopened our lobbies on May 26th and have remained open for our normal business hours since. While other banks in our community have chosen a different route, we believe we can remain open safely for those customers who choose to visit.

Fortunately, however, it has been my experience that strong communities respond to adversity with unity and hard work.

With the help of massive amounts of government stimulus, and neighbor helping neighbor, the situation has improved for many. Local retail businesses and restaurants are open again and residents are showing them strong support. As I write this, our local schools are in the process of opening for our students, and Georgia College, Georgia Military College, and Central Georgia Technical College students who contribute so significantly to our local economy, are back in our community. Everyone is being careful, but everyone is earnestly trying to support our economy.

While our banking industry has certainly learned from this pandemic, it is more important to acknowledge what we have learned as a society. Almost instantly we lost the ability to physically socialize with our friends and those around us. It felt as though we lost a part of our sense of freedom to go and do as we saw fit. Instead of being able to live as we normally had prior to COVID-19, we began to talk about a “new normal” and what that might look like.

Has Century Bank & Trust’s response to COVID-19 still allowed the bank to meet the total financial needs of its customers?

In a word, absolutely! Once the pandemic became apparent, we immediately began to implement plans we have in place for these type events. Each and every decision that we made has been based firmly on the foundational gauge of whether or not it allowed us to serve our customers better. At Century Bank & Trust, we understand that our success or failure as a bank is tied directly to the trust and confidence our customers have in us to protect their money and meet their financial needs.

As a banker, what lessons do you feel we have learned from the COVID-19 pandemic?

I believe the simple tasks of shaking someone’s hand or sharing a hug with an old friend becomes much more special when we lose the ability to do them. It is my hope and prayer that we take this opportunity to learn to never again take for granted the people and the relationships that are such a crucial part of our lives. I firmly believe that history will show that the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 ushered in a new spirit of community and cooperation and a commitment to never take “normal” for granted again.

While our lobbies were closed for safety, we maintained full drive-through facilities at both of our branches. We also made appointments and allowed customers inside to take care of anything we could not handle otherwise. All the while, though, we stressed that our staff was available by phone or

ith avalanches of uncertainty, stress can quickly compound

in our lives. Unfortunately, this can lead to health decline, along with a series of other concerns and unwanted issues. How do we get through stressful situations? Well, don’t miss the forest for the trees. The answer can be nature itself. In a time where maintaining your personal health is crucial, it’s imperative that we respect and understand the benefit of trees. But what can a tree teach us about life and living healthy?

Natural settings like a group of trees and water can produce wonderful effects for the human immune system This can appear puzzling, considering our silent and stationary friends appear to be doing, well, nothing at all.

Contrary to popular belief, they accomplish extraordinary feats, and can be the things we really need during grief-stricken and troubling times.

When a tree is stressed, it is more susceptible to diseases and decline. People are the same way. When we experience prolonged stress, we increase the chances of experiencing future health challenges. Therefore, aligning with plant life and getting lost in nature from time-to-time can help us thrive.

Let’s first look at trees on a high level to help change our perspective. It’s time to point toward The Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC), more specifically, their very own Urban Forestry Model. This serves as a tool and framework. GFC’s initiative is simple: enhance the urban tree canopy to increase the economic, ecological, and social benefits that trees offer.

This is done by making trees (green infrastructure) just as important as any other form of infrastructure like roads, buildings, transportation, energy generation, and utility lines (gray infrastructure).

Instead of viewing trees as simple ornamental, we view them as a component of infrastructure. Don’t just look at a single tree, consider the entire forest. Don’t just value small trees, embrace larger ones. Look past aesthetic landscaping, consider big-picture soil and ecological design.

The GFC’s principles for improving the urban forest include tree preservation, increasing tree planting space, strengthening the quality of the tree-growing environment, adopting suitable trees, and choosing locations that facilitate proper planting.

Social distancing is important. But it is just as important to continue to reach out, talk, and help others. Trees sure do. Once believed that they operate as disconnected and

Trees work together in several ways.

Underground, a mere few inches below our feet, trees share nutrients and send messages through expansive networks of mycorrhizal fungi that attach filaments to tree and plant roots.

Considered the “wood wide web� this is where amazing things begin to happen; parent trees now have the ability to provide for their offspring. Trees that are dying can distribute their resources to other living trees. And trees that are of a different species can share their resources to others that are in need.

Sunlight, fresh air, and active living are also key. Get out and visit a park. Something as simple as a nature trail can spark physical activity; nature has a way of motivating us to exercise more often and for longer time frames. Forest air tends to feel better and fresher, which can boost our immune system. Walking, especially in a natural setting can help lower blood pressure and decrease stress hormones. This can stem from breathing in phytoncides from forest trees. These are airborne chemicals that trees release as a protective shield against threatening insects. Consequently, the human immune system can benefit from this compound, aiding in the fight against diseases that affect us.

Seeing is believing. A window with a good view of trees can do wonders. Setting your sights on nature can reduce stress and depression. Nature can increase creativity, enhance mental acuity, and improve attention. This has become a stress-ridden time in history, so having some sort of connection with nature can ease our minds. Well-landscaped places increase the likelihood that neighbors will get to know each other and go out their way to look out for one another; this creates even safer living environments. This is related to another theory that implies that viewing scenes of nature tend to activate higher levels of empathy and altruism in the brain.

Heat and unbearable environments can cause unnecessary agitation and stress as well. Pavement, metals, rooftops, and other forms of gray infrastructure can create what is known as the heat island effect. In turn cities and urban areas can become hotter than the surrounding natural areas with trees and plant life. You guessed it. Green spaces create cool islands in urban environments. The flow of cool air can be engineered via closely spaced and connected tree areas. Studies show that green spaces can reduce local air temperatures by up to 9 degrees. Every 10 degree increase in urban tree canopies can reduce surrounding heat by 2 degrees.

What may appear as a tree defect could serve as a habitat for animal life.

Trees help shape and develop every other species on this planet as everything interacts with one another. Plant life forms a critical base in our food web. They use photosynthesis (the process of using light to create energy), provide food, and create habitats for animals and other organisms.

Native plant species tend to support more organisms from insects to larger animals.

Native Georgia Oaks can host over 500 species of flying insects like moths and butterflies, whereas non-native tree species like Ginkgo trees and Crape Myrtles host virtually none. Non-native plants can live free of competition, thus causing them to reproduce rapidly. If they out-compete, or even kill native plants, that can decrease biodiversity, disrupt habitats, and reduce the benefits that natural areas and places provide for humans.

Trees affect water quality. We can view them as natural sponges, especially the forest floor, which houses a plethora of leaves that collect and filter rainwater. Impurities, sediments, and pollutants can be reduced as this water is slowly released into water channels such as rivers, creeks, and streams. Heavy rainstorms can break away soil and split it into fine particles. These particles can erode into water channels, and as a result, decrease the quality of water. About 90% of rainwater is captured by the establishment of wellpreserved and situated forest canopies. This is because leafy, full-tree canopies can capture rain and hold portions of it on leaves, bark, and branches. There is a positive correlation between forested land and watershed.

Usually, more forest land equates to cleaner water and lower water treatment costs.

There is ample proof that trees improve our daily lives. With underlying stress being the common thread among most illnesses and disorders. Let’s take a hard look at our lifestyle. A higher dose of nature and being around more trees is a good decision, a way to help us relax a little more, and continue to get through rough times. Stay active. Eat right.

Baldwin County School District (BCSD) The Program for Exceptional Children (PEC) staff members understand the needs of these students and provide support to help them meet the demands of our changing society. Students in PEC are served at all grade levels. PEC teachers utilize a variety of teaching methods aimed to encourage and promote learning. Students participate in many hands-on learning activities, including computer labs and creative writing.

Baldwin County’s PEC Program serves students according to individual exceptionalities and educational needs: • Autism • Emotional/Behavior disorder • Hearing impaired • Intellectually disabled (mild, moderate, profound, severe) • Orthopedically impaired • Other health impaired (any medical condition that impacts the child’s life) • Preschool special education (significantly developmentally delayed) • Specific learning disabled • Speech and language impaired • Traumatic brain injured • Visually impaired • Community-based instruction (instruction and job training on the school campus and in the community)

Traci White, special education director for the BCSD, says the school district serves students ages 3-21. She says, “Exceptional students require specially designed instruction to meet their unique needs. The curriculum, adapted to their ability, allows exceptional students to meet the educational requirements that apply to all students. We have instructional support classes in every school in our district. Tutoring is also provided through the YES program, Communities in Schools and Partners In Education, all community partners with our school district.�

John Milledge Academy (JMA) With instructional support available in elementary, middle, and high school, John Milledge Academy has three certified teachers who teach in their own specialized classrooms.

The most common type of support needed at JMA is with reading and math. Students who need extra help usually have a reading challenge or dyscalculia, which makes it hard to complete math or everyday tasks that involve math. “Our instructional support teachers work with students up to an hour each day. Many students find they no longer need instructional services once they learn to use the skills taught in the class, and a student’s maturity also can play a role in ‘aging out’ of instructional support,” says Jones.

Students involved with instructional support can face time challenges throughout the day. They require extra time out of the day for their instructional support class and then homework and testing can take longer. Jones adds, “As a rule of thumb, children and teens are not patient, and they don’t give themselves enough time to process how long a certain project or a homework assignment can take. Our middle school teachers really work with students on planning out their week, upcoming assignments and organizational skills.”

Jones also encourages parents who have children in instructional support to let them have one-on-one focused time in school and then allow them time and space to be a kid once the school day ends.

JMA students can also take advantage of Equitable Share, which allows private school parents (as tax payers in their county of residence) to have their children tested by the public school system for any educational disabilities and then utilize the county for resources not available at the private school, like speech therapy.

Georgia Military College Prep School (GMC) Called Student Support Teams (SST) at GMC, these groups of teachers, students and parents work to provide strategies to help students improve academic performance for students in grades 3-12.

Julie Wade, the school’s Student Support director, says GMC utilizes 8th period each day to tackle academic challenges with students who need extra help. “We term this period as ‘Enrichment,’ and it is used to help individual students in areas of need and to fortify skills that we want to reinforce.”

If an incoming student has a 504 Plan or an Individual Education Program (IEP), those students filter through Wade.

She develops strategies for students to work on in the summer before school starts, giving them a head start to the school year.

Wade helps students improve reading comprehension in a unique way. “I will have a one-on-one book club with a student, 30

and we agree to how much to read before we meet each week. At the meeting, we talk about what we’ve read, and when it comes time to take the AR test, they will test in my class. This takes some of the pressure off testing in the library and allows for them to focus with no distractions,” she adds.

Wade notices that some students may become overwhelmed with time management, classes, and workload. She concludes, “Getting a bad grade or two doesn’t derail the whole grading period for these students. Teachers meet to come up with a plan to get the student back on track. During class change, I’ll see teachers in the hall, and we can have a quick 5-minute conversation to check in on a student’s progress. GMC is a big family, and our entire focus is on how we can best help students succeed.”. HMLM

Your wedding day is a day that you always remember, but for three of Colleen Costello Powell’s students, it’s a day that they will certainly never forget.

Powell is a teacher at Lakeview Academy who teaches children with intellectual special needs and autism. When she was planning her December 7, 2019 wedding in Covington, Georgia, Powell knew that she wanted to include three of her students. “I had worked with Korde, Jay, and Dominic for almost two years, and I wanted them to be in my wedding. I talked to their parents, and they agreed to the boys’ participation. The moms bought matching suspenders and bow ties, and I planned each boy’s role. Korde pushed Jay’s wheelchair down the aisle. Jay pushed a button on an adaptive device (that we use in class) that said, ‘Here comes the bride.’ Dominic walked me down the aisle, along with my Dad. It was so very special, and it meant the world to me,” she says.

The new Assisted Living residence is surrounded by one- and two-bedroom patio homes for independent living. Working with a staff of five in a new state-of-the-art kitchen, Natacha Ansley is the Director of Food Service.

“One particular resident stopped me in the hallway, and she said, ‘Natacha, the only thing I don’t like here is the food is just too good,’” says Ansley. “I engage the residents in some special dishes. I let them know that if you have a special recipe that you would like to see served, we will name it after you, and that’s been very successful.”

When assisted living residents move-in, they are not only assessed for their medical needs, but also for any special dietary needs.

One Main Cottage resident, Vivian Sheppard, uses her horticultural skills to arrange fresh flowers for the tables in the main dining room. “I really enjoy that. We change them out every week,“ added Vivian.

Surviving Frigid Weather

The old adage prescribing ‘necessity is the mother of invention’ was never more appropriate than the January 2010 internet hiking apparel retailer goosefeetgear.com launch

Then a 20-year-old Georgia Tech student and avid hiker and outdoorsman, Smith was making a mid-winter Appalachian trail excursion, with fellow backpackers, when they discovered themselves unprepared for night-time temperatures plunging to nearly zero degrees. Their feet were the most difficult to protect from the extreme cold and discomfort throughout the frigid night.

Back home and nursing frostbitten toes, Smith scoured the outdoor retail marketplace for a product that would address his criteria for a warm, comfortable, lightweight, reusable foot covering to wear at night on future hikes. Finding nothing suitable, he turned to a home-made solution enlisting his mother Susan, an experienced seamstress, in working to produce a garment from his imagined idea.

Procuring a small quantity of goose down fill for insulation and some basic fabric samples, Smith, the oldest of four sons noted, “Mom and I created a design for a slip-on sock and she sewed together just enough pairs for my brothers and I to have.” After a successful trial run on a subsequent short hike, Smith was eager to show off his creation to friends and posted pictures and descriptions on internet sites.

What happened next was the surprise of his young life and the catalyst for launching a new business enterprise.

“Friends who had seen the pictures started asking for a price to make down socks for them,” Smith recalled. At first, he didn’t take these requests too seriously. “But since it tied into my Industrial and Material engineering courses at Tech, I thought it would be a good real-life experience to look into further,” Smith said.

Within a month, his mother, was producing the handcrafted footwear from her home seamstress table, as Smith was filling orders and receiving more orders every day through a makeshift website. Soon he was contemplating business requirements to move forward and pondering a name for the venture, settling on goosefeetgear.com “as a simple description of footwear constructed from goose down, and because it might grab attention on the internet.” Smith said.

Despite pressing time demands from his rapidly growing business, Smith managed to maintain his academic schedule at Tech, graduating with an Industrial Management degree in 2012.

That level of commitment and determination didn’t surprise his family or friends as he had already received an

Associate Degree from Georgia Military College and had attained an Eagle Scout rank from Boy Scout Pack 87 before his 15th birthday. A year later he completed the Scout super-hike to Philmont New Mexico traversing over 100 miles in seven days, and after this adventure he spent two subsequent summers as a Montana hiking guide.

Much of that affinity for exploring the land, Smith attributes to his father Tim, a land management Forrester with Georgia Power Co. “We grew up appreciating the land and learning how to preserve it because of our dad,” Smith states.

“I wasn’t really thinking about the business as a livelihood early on,” he said. “It was really just something I enjoyed doing and tied into things I was interested in.” Indeed, upon graduation, Smith parlayed a previous internship at Vernay Manufacturing’s local Milledgeville plant into a contract assignment as an Enterprise Resource Planner. This opportunity ultimately provided him invaluable experience and additional business skills to continue developing goosefeetgear.com Over a nearly two-year period at Vernay, Smith travelled to China, Italy, and the Netherlands visiting the company sites in those countries noting, “I really developed a much fuller 56

understanding of manufacturing and sourcing.” It was also during this time that Smith re-connected with a previous acquaintance, Ashley Higgins of Canton, whom he had met, while in high school, at a 4H seminar sponsored by the University of Georgia’s Farm Extension Program. The renewed relationship blossomed into an engagement by the fall of 2014, and life changing choices soon followed.

Ashley was employed in Cumming as Smith was contemplating a long-term career with Vernay in Milledgeville.

While goosefeetgear.com had continued essentially as a family cottage business, relying primarily on its original goose down sock, “A lot of prayer and thought went into taking the next step,” Smith remembers. Those steps proved to be giant leaps with Smith leaving Vernay and starting the quest to take goosefeetgear.com to the next level. Ashley and Ben were then married in January 2015 and moved to Gainesville to live closer to her work and the mountains for convenient hiking trips.

With Smith’s full attention on goosefeetgear.com, the company recorded 20% annual growth over five consecutive years as it has matured into a highly sought niche product line.

Although still relying heavily on its top selling signature comfort sock, Smith has developed a complete offering of head-to-toe outerwear that includes balaclavas or head wear, custom fitted jackets, vests and pants as well as a water proof outer bootie that slips on over the sock, and most recently the introduction of a down filled pillow.

The company has expanded to include six employees who perform separate, but interconnecting production and shipping functions, from home-based workshops in Georgia or Tennessee. Smith’s mother Susan also continues to contribute on a part time basis.

A substantially upgraded website has opened worldwide market access to every region of North America with significant inroad in the European and Australian markets. Added marketing efforts include a partnership with major internet equipment company ZPacks, a large gear provider that now offers Smith’s footwear as well. Smith has also developed a significant presence at local area consumer shows held annually in Dahlonega and Amicalola Falls. He is working toward greater exposure into the substantial outdoor recreation market which approaches 50 million Americans, creating a

$650 billion industry, according to recent U.S. Department of Interior statistics.

Ben and Ashley have also experienced significant personal growth and change over the same five-year period as they welcomed son, Henry in 2017. Ashley resigned her position with Tyson Foods to become involved with the family business and provide full time parenting for Henry. The young family recently moved into a new home on Lake Lanier.

Then, just as unexpected as the company’s beginning, the 10th anniversary year was ushered in by a near shutdown of the business with the economic stall due to the pandemic. “We basically lost our spring selling season for the Appalachian Trail ‘through-hikers’ who are going for six months from Georgia to Maine,” Smith said. “Summer has seen a nice rebound because people are wanting to get outdoors again, but we are mostly geared for cold weather seasons, so we’re looking forward to that uptick in the fall.”

Even as he anticipates improved business conditions, Smith also hopes to renew his hiking passion, perhaps with Henry at his side-first on the trails, then maybe later working alongside him at goosefeetgear.com HMLM Fall-Winter 2020
