hope all of our Avenues readers are having a great start to the new year. By the time you are reading this issue, I will have embarked on a new journey in the form of a new career. Though I am very excited, it is bittersweet as I’ve loved my time with Areawide Media. Enjoy a recap of the 2021 home tour features. We had some interesting properties in addition to our homes. As always, if you have a home tour selection, please contact us! The Ozarka College Foundation received an amazing donation at the end of 2021. They shared the amazing story of Betty Campbell’s love of Sharp County, though being a resident of Ohio. Be sure to check out this story to learn about how she’s enhancing the nursing program for Sharp County students. We also included an update on Thayer, Mo. native, now Nashville artist, Halie. Her song was chosen on Songland by Martina McBride in 2020 and she’s been working her way up since. Renee got to visit with Mammoth Spring photographer Donell Russell. She was recently pleasantly overwhelmed by community support with donations for new camera equipment. She’s always donating her time and talent for students and was moved when the community wanted to give back. I LOVE this issue for February of giving and success in our locals! Whether you celebrate Valentine’s Day or not, I hope this month brings loving and happy vibes for you all.

Gardening in the Ozarks A Rose by Any Other Name… F

ebruary is here and the gardens, for the most part, are still asleep. But wait. “What do I spy with my little eye?” What is that over there under the trees? “Is it a bird? Is it a plane?” No, it is a Lenten-Rose blooming. Now do not get fooled by the name. It is not a rose at all, but a hybrid Hellebore. It got its name because it blooms during the Lenten season and its flowers appears to resemble those of a
rose. The Lenten-Rose is an evergreen perennial that does well in part to full shade. It likes protection from the winter winds and will add a bit of interest and color to a shady area, when most perennials are still dormant. These plants grow in clumps and can reach about 12-18 inches tall and wide. They like moist but well
drained soil and are hardy in zone 4-9. They bloom from late winter till late spring in colors of white, pink, a light rose to a purple. They are perfect to be planted and will naturalize on hillsides, slopes and in the woods. The flowers will appear under the leaves and can sometimes be missed. Once established, the Lenten-Rose is very hardy and requires very little care. The blooms will begin during the late winter and will stop when the heat of the summer arrives. Best planted under a deciduous tree that will provide sun in the winter and shade during the summer. The best time to plant a Lenten-Rose can be in fall or spring. If planted in the fall, plant early enough for it to establish roots before the ground freezes. The clumps can be divided after three years and it has bloomed for 1 season. Sometimes with dividing, because they are disturbed, it might take a whole growing season for them to begin blooming again. The plant can also be grown from seeds. After the flower has faded you can gather up the seeds and plant

them in the summer. If you let the plant, do its own thing, the seeds will drop and allow the plant to spread naturally. The seeds need to go through a 3-week cold period, so planting them right away you can expect them to begin growing after the winter. As a warning, the Lenten-Rose is in the Buttercup Family and can be toxic to humans, dogs, cats and horses if eaten in large quantities. They have an awful taste which generally will stop anything from eating the amount needed to become toxic. The Lenten-Rose is deer resistant and for the most part, disease resistant. The use of a fungicide can help if needed, but if planted in the correct conditions (with good air flow) they are resistant to almost all common diseases. Now you have a new option for your shady area that will add color and interest even during the winter. And remember, a rose by any other name could just be a Lenten-Rose.

Taking a look back at 2021 home tours
Story & Photos by Kim Break As with 2020, our Avenues staff had to be creative with selections in 2021. We have enjoyed thinking outside of the box and bringing some unique features to the table. Enjoy looking back on the home tour features of 2021. The January 2021 home tour featured the home of David and Kristin Newman in Myrtle, Mo. What started out as plans to take on a major remodel turned into a complete new build following the advice of contractors. The couple was very involved in the process and worked important elements and heirlooms into the home’s design. David and Kristin also have two children, Cody and Ava. It is built farm tough as the home is amongst the family operation, Newman Farm Heritage Berkshire Pork. The March issue featured a family project of a historic building in Salem. Dr. John and Leslie Scribner purchased the Castleberry building, located on the Salem Square, in January 2020. Their intent from the beginning was to restore the building, especially important to Salem native, Dr. Scribner. Glendon, Phoebe, Marshall and Jewell; the Scribner’s four children, enjoyed the space as their classroom at one point. Now the main level is Castleberry Shop on the Corner, a children’s clothing store specializing in personalized and monogrammed items.

The building received its place on the Arkansas Register of Historic Places in early 2021. The April issue featured another unique property. The home in Thayer was purchased by the Thayer Development and Improvement Organization, Inc. Board and remodeled by students with the Building Trades Program from Thayer High School. It was a community effort as United Country Cozort Realty took less of a commission on the sale of the home and RE/MAX Real Estate Exchange, Alex and Kylie O’Neill, assisted with the sale of home after renovations. Several local professional services and individuals were used in the project and assisted in teaching the students some tricks of their trades. The Mammoth Spring United Methodist Church found its way to the Arkansas Register of Historic Places in 2021 and was featured in the May issue. Buz Allen is a member of the church and took it upon himself to complete the necessary steps for the property to be listed. The church was built between 1911 and 1913 and it’s
beauty and uniqueness has been kept over many decades. Local field stone was used on the church and the stained glass window is a popular feature. Though the stained glass window was effected in a rock mishap in 2014, the church made the necessary repairs and was pleasantly surprised to receive reimbursement from the family of James F. Irvin, who donated the funds for the window originally.

Though a historical property, it is still very much an active congregation and positively impacts the community. Bryan and Dawn Snow are fairly new Ozark residents and chose their property near Myrtle, Mo. for it’s dark skies. This was a fun feature for June and will hopefully have a part two in 2022. Bryan is an astronomer so finding the perfect location to build his observatory was important. Of course they’ve built a beautiful story house home on the property, it wasn’t quite “home tour” ready for Dawn. Their home sits on top of their 60-acre farm with amazing views of the rural country life. The couple retired from Texas and while Bryan enjoys his amazing 16-foot (across) observatory and Dawn is becoming quite the beekeeper with her apiary and has continued her love of gardening. The telescope mount aligns with the North Star. The observatory rotated around the telescope, as well as the top half opening in sections. Chains, latches and turn buckles keep the structure secure. July and November featured the home of Scott and Ashley Harper. The gorgeous farm home was designed around their busy lifestyles between exotic and farm animals, which their children Braxton, Braymer, Brayda and Branch, all help with. Their Caulfield, Mo. farm has special significance as it once was once Scott’s great grandfather’s. The building began in December 2020. Metal, rock and wood beams make up the outside of the home. The large open living space including family room, dining room and kitchen is perfect for their lifestyle. The mixtures of wood gives it a rustic feel, but the natural light keeps the space bright. It is a two-story

home with an open living space and bedrooms. In August, Ozark giraffe houses and churches were the main feature. A social media post sparked the interest of the history of these homes and as it turns out, there are several in our immediate area. We included the article by Stephen Jordan along with photos of giraffe homes and churches in the area. The home of Josh and Melissa Pierce, of Thayer, was the September feature. It had always been a dream of the couple’s to build. In 2018, their dream came to life when they moved into their newly built and personally designed home. It was especially special to each of their three children, Avery, Matt and Riley, as they each got to design their own space. The back patio is a summer oasis with an amazing pool and beautiful views of the country life. Finding the perfect space to build their forever home was important as well. The convenience of being a few minutes from town, but private in the country is exactly what they wanted. The shop located next to their home is an amazing family hang out space with a pool table, along with items and features that have followed them along through the years. “River Owl” is an Air BnB home in Cherokee Village and was featured in the October issue. Owned by Michael and Tammy Dumas, of Memphis, Tenn., the couple uses the condo home, which boasts views of Lake

Sequoyah, as a vacation home and income property. They’ve owned property in the Village since 2008 and love visiting every chance they get. They have hopes to retire in the long run, but enjoy sharing their love of the Ozarks with fellow “out of towners”. We closed out the year in Thayer, Mo. at the home of Clay and Heather Risner. It was the perfect holiday home with Christmas cheer spread in every corner of the home! They had recently bought their mid-century modern home and immediately began getting ready for the Christmas home tour. Christmas is very special to Heather, as it was also her mother’s birthday, who passed away in 2020, just prior to the holiday season. At first, Heather was discouraged from “going all out” as she and her mother always did, but once she began, she could feel her
mother leading her. In the new home, each room followed a different theme, which also were the themes for her family’s weekly celebrations during the month of December. Two stories (basement and main level) were decked for the holidays with a variety of themes from vintage, the Grinch, traditional and more. Clay and Heather have two adult sons who live separately, but they’ve recently welcomed two young daughters into their family and hope to make each Christmas as special as they can for them. Making their unique home their own, and their forever home, is something they are looking forward to. We hope to have another amazing year in 2022 and bring some more amazing features to our home tour section.

A recent donation by Betty Campbell made it possible for Ozarka College Foundation to expand scholarships for nursing students in Sharp County. Campbell is an Ohio resident, but had a vacation home in Hardy, Ark. where her family spent most of their summers. She donated the home to the Ozarka College Foundation. The cabin on Whapeton Hill was visited by Campbell and her family for over 30 years, according to a press release from Ozarka College. The 1 AVENUES • February, 2022
release also included a quote from her youngest daughter, Courtney, “We left the day after school ended in May and came home the day before school began in the fall”. In an interview with Ozarka College’s Vice President of Advancement, Josh Wilson, said the family’s belief in the value of strong education and their love of Hardy is an amazing story and true testament to the life of Campbell. Suellen Davidson, Ozarka’s Director of Develop-
ment, has had a longstanding relationship with Campbell. Campbell had originally started out in nursing and eventually found her way into education. “She just reached out to us because she wanted to do something to help the people of Sharp County, because of her love of Hardy. As she got to know us better and got to learn about our strong nursing program, that just fit,” said Davidson about the scholarships’ inception. Campbell previously established two endowed scholarships in her late husband’s name, the Robert Kalischer Memorial Nursing Scholarships, which supported two $500 scholarships each year. “When I first met Ms. Campbell, she was making frequent trips to her vacation home,” stated Dr. Richard Dawe in the press release. “It has been an honor to get to know Betty over the years and become familiar with her love for the people of Sharp County and her passion to support Ozarka College.”

“We have just been inspired by her,” added Davidson, who was honored to visit Campbell in Ohio recently. Courtney orchestrated and pulled off the surprise when friends from Ozarka visited. Longtime board member of the foundation, Garry Lawrence was also instrumental in planning the trip. He was the connection between Campbell and Ozarka College. Though she no longer makes the trip to Hardy, her love of the community and Ozarka College was evident in her gifting the property “in hopes it would encourage others in her situation to consider a property gift to the [Ozarka College] Foundation.” Campbell recently turned 95-years-old and lives a vibrant life as documented by a recent visit by the Ozarka College Advancement Staff to her home in Columbus, Ohio. She swims every day and is an avid reader and sharp investor. “These types of scholarships really have a lasting impact on the students and programs,” said Wilson.

What’s Cookin’ in the Ozarks? Tortellini Salad By Richard Irby 1 lb. cheese-filled tortellini 3/4 cup olive oil 1/4 cup white wine vinegar 1/2 lb. ham or salami, thinly sliced 1/2 lb. smoked turkey, thinly sliced 1 cup defrosted fozen peas 2 medium carrots, cut in julienne strips 1 green or red pepper, cut in julienne strips 1/2 cup finely chopped parsley 2 cloves garlic, minced or pressed Salt and pepper to taste 1 head red leaf lettuce, for garnish 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese Cook the tortellini in a large pot of boiling salted water until just tender, five minutes for fresh pasta and 10-15 minutes for frozen or dried. Drain into a colander and rinse under cold running water until cool. Let drain for 10 minutes. Place in a large bowl and toss with 1/4 cup oil. Cover and and refrigerate. Add the ham, turkey, peas, carrots and pepper to the tortellini. Cover and refrigerate about 30 minutes before serving. Shortly before serving, whisk together the parsley, garlic, vinegar and remaining 1/2 cup oil. Pour over the salad and toss well to coat. Garnish with lettuce leaves. *Bottled dressings and vinegrettes can be used.

A love for her community and photography has inspired Mammoth Spring resident Donell Russell to capture important moments and share them with others. A lifelong photographer, Russell stated she has always taken pictures. “I have just always taken pictures. Even when I was in school and it was just with throwaway cameras, I have just always loved it,” said Russell, stating she got her first real nice camera at the age of 18. The Mammoth Spring Bears alum shares her gift of photography by snapping pictures of sporting events, homecoming, graduation, and Christmas activities just
to name a few. Russell recalled she began taking pictures of sporting events when her own children were playing. Then she began taking pictures of all the kids, which she has done for approximately 20 years. Parents would often ask Russell for pictures she may have taken of their children. Around this time, the superintendent had placed a couple of glass cases in the lobby. “I asked him one day if he cared if I started printing some of the pictures and put them in the case in the lobby. He said absolutely. That is how it started

with the sports pictures. We did not have Facebook…so I printed everything off and I would take them to school and put them in that case. Then at the end of the season, we would throw all the pictures out on the table and all the parents would come get them.” Not only will you see Russell, who served on the Mammoth Spring School board for 17 years and coached cheerleading at the school for 15 years, at home games devotedly snapping photos, but the lifelong Bear also travels to many of the away games, for which she is allowed to ride the bus some for. She has also been the female chaperone for track. Looking back at the pictures that used to be taken to

now, Russell stated since cameras have improved, so have the pictures as has photo editing. Advancement in technology with digital cameras has made it easier for Russell to share photos, which she takes approximately 1,000 of during ball games. “When I started out you had to go to Walmart and had to send your film off and wait to get your pictures back. That part has changed. The photo editing has changed so much. There are just so many cool things you can do now. I started doing game day photos several years ago and doing the cutouts of them. We can cut them out now and we can put them in really cool backgrounds. I love doing the digital backgrounds
and making really cool graphics for the game days and for the tournaments…I noticed a lot of schools are doing it now and it has kind of become a thing where the other schools are kind of doing those game day photos and a bunch of stuff like that too. Digital has just made everything so much easier. I can’t even imagine now taking all of those pictures and having to wait until they got developed,” said Russell. Approximately 10 years ago, Russell started the Mammoth Spring Bears Facebook page. This also helped to expand Russell’s coverage of school events and activities including taking pictures of Homecoming, band, Christmas parade, etc. “I love it. I just like to do

it. I don’t need any recognition. I don’t get paid for anything that I do. Because I am fairly introverted, being a photographer is a great thing because I can stand by myself, I go find a corner in the gym and get behind my camera. It is a great profession for introverts.” With the talents of Russell at their disposal, many parents will wait for her to share the pictures she has taken instead of taking their own at events. “I like that when we win a tournament, no parent from Mammoth Spring will come out on the floor to take a picture because they know,” Russell said, stating after a recent tournament everybody was on the floor taking pictures of the other team and she was the only one on the floor from Mammoth Spring. “I see parents looking [and saying] don’t those parents want

a picture, but they know I’m going to get the pictures for them. It makes me feel good and I will hear them say they will get pictures a soon as I get them posted. It makes me feel good that I can do that for them.” When asked how she hopes community members benefit from her doing this, Russell said, “Just that they have these pictures, these memories, because people don’t use cameras anymore, everybody uses their phone.” She stated she has even noticed this when she is taking pictures of graduation. In addition, she loves being able to take pictures of sporting events, which can be harder to capture. An important aspect of taking pictures is the kind of lens Russell uses. Sometimes for events such as tournaments or homecoming, a short lens is needed, and she would have to switch lenses quickly. However, the
one she had was not as sharp as she preferred. “Everybody else that sees the pictures think they look fine, but it bothers me,” said Russell, stating she borrowed her friend, Debbie Moore’s camera when photographing a golf match. “I had posted a few pictures I took with it, and I said something about wanting the camera, but I would probably have to sell a kidney,” said Russell. When her sister-in-law, Beth, saw this she secretly opened an account to raise money to help Russell purchase a new lens, something Russell had been working to save for as well.
Many in the community helped show appreciation for all that Russell does by donating to the fund. “It just absolutely just blew me away. She came by at Christmas time and there was about $700 that had been put in there. She had it hidden from me on Facebook so she opened it where I could see it. It was just really cool because it was all of these posts from people that were so appreciative from all the years, I have been doing pictures for them of everything…It was very overwhelming,” said Russell, stating between the money raised from the account and what she “had saved, she was able to buy another camera, a Nikon Z50.

“I was very humbled by that. It was awesome. I didn’t expect it. I guess I take for granted what I do. I just do it because I can do it and I love it and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Times are hard and that they would put in money for me to be able to get something like that,” said Russell. Russell and her close friend, Debbie Moore, tested out the new camera on one of their monthly hiking trips. Meeting through a mutual photographer friend, Russell and Moore’s friendship grew over their love for photography. Moore stated when they were introduced their mutual friend said, “if two people ever needed to get together and be buddies it was us.”
“We have been really good friends since. We hike together and take pictures. She has helped me so much with my photography even because she has done it forever. It’s something I was always interested in…it is just like her giving another piece of herself,” said Moore, stating she usually finds the places and Russell helps her with her photography. “Our friendship has been about six years, but it came at a very good time, and I have been blessed by her,” said Moore. Even during a difficult time, when Russell’s husband had a liver transplant, she was dedicated to taking pictures for the kids. Moore stated she “barely missed a beat” and even though she had to

miss some games, she made sure to have game day posts for the Bears page. “She cares about those kids,” said Moore, stating Russell has also taken senior pictures for that maybe couldn’t afford them. “She has never asked for a dime for all those sports pictures and parents have those memories because of her. Taking candid pictures of graduation and giving them to people, keeping the Bears page running. She is just amazing, and she uses her talent in a very positive way and gives it to the kids at that school,” said Moore. “We kind of help each other. I did a lot of hiking and stuff and I love beautiful scenery and
Donell helped me learn some things with my camera that I can now do, and I can capture those places and a lot of it is because of her. She says I found those places because of you. We have a really neat friendship, and it came about through photography… It really came at a good time. She went through some tough times, and I have been there for her, and she has been there for me. I don’t believe in accidents. I think God puts people in your life for a reason. I don’t think it is coincidental and I think our paths crossed because God knew they needed to and she has been a blessing,” said Moore.

Thayer native releases first single

In Spring 2020, Thayer, Mo. native and now Nashville artist, Halie, was overwhelmed when she was successful on the show Songland. Her song was chosen by Martina McBride, leading Halie to be highlighted on the show. Now, not quite two years later, Halie has released her very own single. It aired for the first time on local radio

station, KKountry 95, following her on-air interview with The Redbone Mike Crase. She describes the new song as a very up tempo, happy go lucky song. “As for a first release, I really wanted people to know my heart and just know that I am unapologetically myself. I love too much, I’m very open about
that and I also don’t apologize for being that way. I want people to hear the song and hopefully be able to relate to it, because at the end of the day, we all just want to love and be loved a lot.” Though Songland was an amazing experience, it was difficult to navigate around the COVID-19 pandemic. “I will forever be so grateful that I got to

have that experience,” she said. Unfortunately the pandemic affected more than just Songland. “I had a lot of cool things that were supposed to happen but because of the pandemic, didn’t.” She keeps a positive attitude and chalks it up to being part of the industry, as there are a lot of unknowns. “You just gotta keep pushing through if you really want it.” Over the last couple of years, Halie has been working hard on writing more songs, playing shows, modeling and
working a day job to pay the bills. She’s mostly excited to write and release more songs and “finally let people know what I’ve been working on. New Frontiers By Dewayne French Have you ever fished when you just couldn’t get a bite on anything? Well I have found myself in that boat many times. As I learn how to fish, I’m also learning how to not let that happen to me. While learning different techniques, different seasonal patterns I’m also learning what the “New Frontier” in fishing is. As we get older we see new things being invented and old things being made better. One of those new ideas is forward facing sonar. We all know what a “fish finder” is and have even seen side imaging come about in the last decade. But, forward facing sonar is one of the new upcoming engineered frontiers in fishing. The basic concept is the same as the old technology of looking under your boat with the transducer mounted on the transom of your boat. The unfortunate part is that you are actually only seeing your history, what you passed over and what was behind the boat. With the advent of side imaging, we could see what was out to the side of the boat, but it was still limited in that you had to be moving and it still was a history type of technology “what you passed”. With the new technology of forward facing transducers mounted on the trolling motor or a separate shaft up on the front of the boat, we can now see what is in front of us as we fish. The “New Frontier” is here and I’m just learning it. I hope to have fewer days of no fish catches and more days with smiles and fish fries. It is not a “Magic lure that makes fish bite” but it is a tool that we have to learn to use. Will it help you catch more fish, yes; bigger fish, possibly? But it won’t make them bite, that is up to you to figure out. I have learned more about how fish react to a lure and it has helped me refine what I’m doing to get the fish to bite. I can follow my lure and adjust when the fish don’t bite or even run the other way. Yes I have seen my lure after I cast it out and followed it coming back to the boat and seen fish run
from it. In that case I change to a totally different technique. If they come to my lure and don’t bite I usually will just change a different color or retrieve seed. Using technology to help you catch fish and learn more about the fishing game can be expensive. You don’t want to buy every new thing out there, first it needs to be proven or you will drive yourself crazy with all the new gadgets and gizmos every year. I still learn every time I go out on the water fishing. Life has given us all twists in our lives. How we untangle the twist leads us to what we are known for when we depart this life. Enjoy fishing, family, and faith and your life will speak volumes. Remember we all “Live Downstream” so please pick up your trash and any other trash you see out floating around! Never discard old fishing line in the river or lake! Wear your life jacket, and tell your family your expected return times, and a general location of where you plan to fish.
