History Comes Alive in Hardin County, Tennessee! Springtime in Hardin County, Tennessee along the river means boaters are beginning to putter about, the peach trees at Shiloh are starting to bud, and soon the echoes of cannon firing will be booming. Yes, April is the anniversary of the pivotal Civil War battle at Shiloh, one of the most critical battles in American history. Some of the biggest figures of the Civil War were there: Grant, Sherman, Johnston, Beauregard, Forrest, Bragg, Buellall fought there. Grant would write in his memoirs, before Shiloh, Americans on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line believed that the war could still be a short affair. This April marks the 160th anniversary of the famous siege and several events are popping up to recognize the historic confrontation. Celebrate with 4 | DISCOVER
locals, historians, and reenactors in the first weeks of April. Come experience the battle reenactments near Shiloh National Park staged on the 330-acre grounds hosted by the 1st Division/Southern Reenactors Association the first weekend in April. These trained volunteers will showcase artillery and cavalry demonstrations, living history programs, and real time battle scenarios. Reenactment location is off Joe Dillion Road, Michie, Tennessee. The same weekend in Savannah, TN on April 2, the Hardin County Convention and Visitors Bureau will host their annual Generals Breakfast at Cherry Mansion. Cherry Mansion came of note during the Civil War when General Ulysses S. Grant made his headquarters at the home during the Battle of Shiloh.
Tickets for the event include breakfast, a storytelling program by the attending Generals, and a Q&A presentation by the homeowners of Cherry Mansion. “General US Grant, portrayed by historian Dr. Curt Fields, will be joined at his headquarters by his rival, Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard, portrayed by historian Larry McCluney, Jr. These first-person living history portrayals are a unique and fun recounting of historical events and famous people, making for some great storytelling!”, said Tourism Director Beth Pippin. Pippin added this event has grown each year over the last 10 years and there is a limited number of tickets available sold in advance only. The breakfast is an outside venue under a heated tent enclosure.
The day’s events continue during the 160th anniversary by offering a visit to the Tennessee River Museum in downtown Savannah, open everyday for tours. A special program “An Evening with Grant” is planned for the night of April 2 at the historic Savannah Theater adjacent to the downtown museum. “We are celebrating Grant’s Bicentennial as he turns 200 years old this April”, shared tourism director Pippin, “again with Dr. Fields portraying Grant on stage at the theater telling stories of his life as a military man and President.” Following the ticketed performance, guests may also choose to purchase tickets to a private birthday reception at the museum with guest of honor “U.S. Grant”. Again, a limited number of tickets will be sold and only sold in advance, from the Hardin County Convention and Visitors Bureau. The second weekend in April, Shiloh
National Military Park will host their annual demonstrations where you can follow in Grant’s footsteps taking the trip across the river from Savannah to the park. On-your-own-touring by car, hiking, or biking is an area favorite for visitors to the pristine park. There will be Battlefield Hikes led by rangers presented April 6-8 and cannon firing demos on April 9-10 at Shiloh National Park. The storytelling and historic events don’t stop there! Just northbound of Shiloh and Savannah in the river town of Saltillo, Tennessee on April 8-10 will be the Tennessee River Primitive Art and Weaponry/History Festival. This fun-filled 3-day event is packed full of reenactors of Native American, Mountain Men, French and Indian War, Revolutionary War and Civil War periods. Hosted by the City of Saltillo at the
community center in downtown Saltillo there will be food and art vendors, and reenactor campsites for attendees to enjoy. Event organizer Mike Fields said “We will have many demonstrations throughout the weekend!! Cannon firings, flint lock musket firings, ancestral drums, stories, wood carvings….not to mention the food!!! Plus many, many vendors and craftsman that will be on site. Make plans to come out and enjoy!!” For more information on Hardin County events and the Battle of Shiloh visit www.tourhardincounty.org or www. nps.gov/shil. Tickets for The Generals Breakfast, an Evening with Grant, and the Bicentennial Birthday Reception will be available at the Tennessee River Museum in downtown Savannah or online under Shiloh 160th at www.tourhardincounty.org

Gov. Bill Lee and America’s Most-Loved Fisherman Bill Dance Announce Tennessee “Bill Dance Signature Lakes” Initiative
Gov. Bill Lee and fishing icon Bill Dance today announced a new initiative to improve and enhance Tennessee lakes, increase visitation and honor Dance’s legacy with the creation of Bill Dance Signature Lakes. TWRA and the State of Tennessee will invest $15 million in improvements both above and below the water at 18 lakes which bear fishing legend Dance’s stamp of approval. Tennesseans will benefit from increased stocking, habitat and fisheries management, as well as improved access for fishing and boating. The collaborative effort between Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, Tennessee State Parks and Tennessee
Department of Tourist Development seeks to solidify Tennessee as the heart of fishing in the southeast and drive economic activity across the state. Tennessee is home to half-a-million acres of lakes and 1.7 million people who fish according to the American Sportfishing Association. Bill Dance Signature Lakes touches 39 counties including 22 at-risk or economically distressed counties, and is an important step in helping those communities create new revenue streams through increased visitation. Fishing generates $1.2 billion in economic impact annually and supports 7,480 jobs across the state.
This initiative to improve public facilities and habitat at lakes across Tennessee comes at an important time as many of the state’s lakeside communities were devastated by severe weather over the weekend. “Bill Dance is a tremendous advocate for our Tennessee rural communities and we are thrilled to partner with him,” said Gov. Lee. “The Bill Dance Signature Lakes highlights the importance of lakeside tourism with premier fishing opportunities and we believe this project is especially important as communities recover from the recent storms.” “I’m unbelievably humbled and excited DISCOVER | 23

to be involved in such a helpful project that will benefit so many people and our natural resources in my great home state of Tennessee,” said Bill Dance. “You can bet your favorite lure this project will definitely have a ripple effect for a mighty long time, not only giving the weekend fisherman, but tournament anglers a wonderful fishery as well, thanks to the great state of Tennessee and my friends at TWRA.” Bill Dance Signature Lakes includes
nine large reservoirs with a proven track record for quality fishing for a variety of fish. In partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority, reservoirs will receive new or upgraded best-in-class ramps to improve public access for both recreational and tournament anglers. Each of the 18 lakes will see such above-water upgrades as courtesy docks, ample parking, additional access points, fishing piers and signage, to name a few. Several smaller lakes, many of which are locat-
ed within Tennessee State Parks, will be managed intensively by TWRA for Bill Dance approved family fishing with regular stockings to ensure the best chance for success. Each lake was selected by agency partners and Bill Dance for its ability to be a destination fishing location and provide quality fishing fun for avid anglers as well as families. Endorsed by Bill Dance Outdoors, projects are slated to begin in 2022 and near completion by fall of 2024.
The Bill Dance Signature Lakes at launch are as follows: 1000 Acre Lake, Huntington, TN (Carroll County)
Brown’s Creek Lake, Natchez Trace (Henderson County)

Noted as one of the nation’s premier heritage and cultural museums, the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee, is steadfast in its mission to share the culture and lessons from the American Civil Rights Movement and explore how this significant era continues to shape equality and freedom globally. Established in 1991, the National Civil Rights Museum is located at the former Lorraine Motel, where civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968. Through interactive exhibits, historic collections, dynamic speakers and special events, the museum offers visitors a chance to walk through history and learn more about a tumultuous and inspiring period of change. Seven ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day in a socially distant manner
The last couple of years have been challenging for social butterfl ies, as the COVID-19 pandemic has limited opportunities to socialize in person with close friends and family members. Social distancing guidelines affected various holidays throughout 2020 and 2021. Valentine’s Day may be the easiest holiday to celebrate while still adhering to social distancing restrictions. After all, Valentine’s Day is typically a day to spend time alone with the person you love. The following are seven socially distant Valentine’s Day celebration ideas.
7
5. Those who reside in climates that are mild in February can rent a small boat and enjoy a few hours on the open water far away from others. 6. Purchase the ingredients to a recipe you both enjoy and prepare the meal together. Don’t forget to leave room for dessert. 7. Take turns giving one another back massages at home. These are just some of the ways Valentine’s Day can be enjoyed safely while adhering to pandemic-related safety guidelines.
1. Order a take-out dinner for two from a favorite local restaurant. It gives you the night off from cooking and helps support a small business. 2. Watch a romantic movie on your preferred streaming service. 3. Treat each other to a pair of cozy pajamas and spend the day under the covers catching up on cuddles and rest. 4. Bundle up and, if weather allows, take a hand-in-hand stroll through a park or favorite sightseeing spot. Just follow any protocols for remaining safe, such as wearing masks.
