ontemplating a sea of topics for this issue, we landed on acknowledging our area’s Class of 2020 — the senior class robbed of so many of high school’s biggest events due to the spread of a global pandemic. With their special year cut short, we contacted several Bay Area schools to help us honor some of their hardest working girls sure to change the world. And, after editing their long lists of achievements, we can say without hesitation, “The future is bright!”

Accompanying their impressive bios, we also focused on a few notable women braving the COVID-19 frontlines. And just… wow.

Facing the unknown with dedication and bravery, these women are worthy of every honor and praise. With no shortage of stories on how locals are supporting one another and others who need a helping hand, we’re pretty proud of this one. With well wishes of safety and sanity (How’s your pandemic hair?), enjoy the read and we can’t wait to see you all on the other side of this outbreak.

Alabama Medical Group’s Angels in Scrubs Meet four local female healthcare providers with one thing in common: they all work in Infectious Disease. That means COVID-19. All the Infectious Disease certified registered nurse practitioners at Alabama Medical Group are working tirelessly and helping to treat patients at various surrounding hospitals — each a hero in her own right. Here, they share how it’s going in the trenches.

Sh ei l a Sau cier , CRNP, Infecti ous Di sease Mother of Emmi Jones (21) and Jacob Jones (16), and wife of Scott Saucier, Sheila admits that COVID-19 has brought many challenges to the entire medical community. “From increased isolation efforts (wearing PPE throughout the day) to the patients being isolated from families and vice-versa, everyone has had to adjust to a new normal,” she shares.

Working at several local hospitals, she adds, “As with the COVID-19 pandemic, we treat patients with a multitude of infectious diseases. From early concerns regarding testing availability and interpretation of results, to continued infectious control efforts, it has been an honor to work with so many specialists during this crisis.”

Am an d a Ladner , CRNP, Infecti ous Di sease Treating COVID-19 patients and others with varying infectious diseases at several local hospitals, Amanda’s experience has been unforgettable. “We’ve been astounded by the amount of compassion and empathy displayed not only by the hospital staff, but also the local community,” she says. “It’s been very touching to see everyone come together as a collective group to serve our patients and make a difference in their lives, and it has been uplifting to see patients recover from this illness and be reunited with their loved ones.” And how about when she finally heads home to husband Jerad Hayes? “Our first priority is safety,” she says. “We try to maintain cleanliness and prevent the spread of the virus by practicing safe techniques at home. These techniques include taking our shoes off outside our front doors, washing our scrubs immediately, and always practicing good hand hygiene.”

M o rg an Ru tledge, CRNP, Infecti ous Di sease As wife to Colin and mother to Amelia (2), CRNP Morgan is pro at balancing the demands of caring for and raising a young family while simultaneously upholding her duties treating patients at Providence Hospital. Currently expecting another baby girl in July, Morgan says she has to be extra cautious when making her rounds. “Wearing a protective mask all day while rounding in the hospital has been quite a challenge at seven months pregnant, but I’m happy to do my part to protect patients, myself, and my family,” she says. “This is definitely a unique time to be a provider and a fascinating time to work in infectious disease as we learn about this novel virus.” Identifying it as a time of strengthening multidisciplinary collaboration, she adds, “In effort to preserve PPE and protect provider exposure, we are often relying on one designated provider (a pulmonologist or hospitalist) to perform the patient’s physical exam and disseminate exam findings to other members of the patient’s care team for medical decision making,” she explains. “It almost feels like a summer camp exercise in team building.” As for the overall mood? “The acute care setting mood can best be described as ‘determined and focused,’” she shares. “With elective procedures on hold and no visitors allowed, the hospital is down to its ‘bare bones’ and concentrating on caring for patients and protecting providers. To uplift us all, Providence plays the ‘Rocky’ theme song, ‘Gonna Fly Now,’ when a COVID-19 patient is discharged, just as they play a lullaby when a baby is born. It, too, is a cause for celebration.”

Tawny Lewis , CRNP, Infecti ous Di sease Married 15 years to husband Wesley, this busy mom of Tinley (13), Josiah (10), Piper (5), and Amelia (3), has just one wish: “I wish more people knew the selflessness that can be found in healthcare,” she says. “It’s amazing to see men and women working together to help someone else in need. This pandemic has merely highlighted what quietly goes on in the background on a normal basis: consistent community heroes continuing to do what they are called to do — no matter the pay, no matter the recognition, no matter the cost. It’s such a powerful and humble impact that I am privileged to be a part of.” As for the future? “Once this outbreak is under control, I am looking forward to seeing my kids’ teachers,” she jests. “I will never take them for granted again! Mostly though, I can’t wait to make up for lost time with friends and extended family.”

Girls Who Will Change the World

As the world rapidly responded to the COVID-19 pandemic, our local high school seniors saw their senior year cut devastatingly short. As they mourned the loss of their spring athletic seasons, senior proms, graduation ceremonies, and the last few months of soaking in this special time with their friends and classmates, ACCESS brainstormed on ways to honor these outstanding graduates. So this year, we proudly present our “Seniors Who Will Change the World” — stellar young women chosen by their schools for their academic excellence, outstanding leadership, and dedication to their communities, sports, and schools.

Look out world; these young women are taking over!

Jordan Chow, 18 Daughter of Dr. & Mrs. Alan Chow UMS-Wright Preparatory School

U M S -W R I G H T P R E PA R ATO R Y S C H O O L

Dedicated to both her church and her school, Jordan’s list of involvement and achievements is vast. At school, Jordan was a founding member of the Poetry club; a member of the History Club, the National Honors Society, and the Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society; a recipient of the Leonard Bernstein Award and Spirit Award; and served in various capacities for the UMS-Wright band including band captain (junior year), and drum major (senior year). At church, Jordan participates with Raise the Roof Ministries, is an avid Church Acolyte, and was chosen as a Youth Delegate where she voted on important changes to the church. Additionally, during her junior year, Jordan reigned as the 2019 Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association’s Junior Queen. Jordan says women like Katherine Johnson, Michelle Obama, and Malala Yousafzsi have always inspired her because despite the adversity they faced, they are each proud of who they are, where they came from, and what they do. In the fall, Jordan will attend Auburn University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in integrative biology. She plans to pursue a doctorate in genetics and build a career in genetic counseling or research.

Ann Corrigan, 18 Daughter of Ms. Lee Young UMS-Wright Preparatory School A member of the National Honor Society, the National English Honor Society, the Quill and Scroll Honor Society, and the National Spanish Honor Society, Ann’s commitment to her academics has surely paid off. She also serves as co-editor-in-chief to her school’s yearbook, The Cadet, and is a member of the Varsity swim team. Other than maintaining her impressive GPA, Ann devotes a large amount of her time to giving back. Instilled by her mother at a young age, Ann has lived by the motto: “The greatest thing you can do for yourself is to give to someone else.” She puts this advice into action through her work with the Key Club at UMS and her dedication to teaching art to young children at Mrs. Paula Kiszla’s art camp the past four summers. It is because of Mrs. Kiszla and Ann’s grandfather that she learned how important art can be to people, giving them a way to let out their feelings and overcome their fears. Ann gives all the credit for her successes to her mother and her grandparents, as they are the reason she strives to do her best in everything she does. As for her future plans, Ann will be attending Boston College in the fall studying both communications and international relations. Upon graduating, Ann would love to work as a journalist or in a PR and media firm, all while continuing to serve the community around Boston College.

Sarah Elizabeth Freeman, 18 Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Judson Freeman UMS-Wright Preparatory School

Campbell Ladd, 17 Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Edward Bradford Ladd Jr. UMS-Wright Preparatory School Never one to shy away from a challenge, this AP honor student has excelled in her rigorous academic schedule. Living by the honor and integrity that defines her school, Campbell has served on the Honor Council since her freshman year and was elected as their president her senior year. A swimmer for City of Mobile Swim Association since age 7, and the varsity team since 7th grade, Campbell was naturally chosen as co-captain of her varsity swim team, which won the State Championship in 2018 and 2019 — the second time in the school’s history since the 1990s. Campbell also received the Coach’s Award for varsity swimming her senior year, recognizing her outstanding leadership and positive attitude. Understanding the importance of giving back, Campbell worked over the summer of 2019 and donated all of her earnings to those in the Kaleidoscope Program (a program for special needs adults) at Goodwill. Finding it impossible to choose just one role model, Campbell says all her teachers, school leaders, swim coaches, and her parents have enabled her to participate in what she loves, while always encouraging her along the way. Campbell plans to attend the University of Virginia with an interest in their pre-med program and hopes to one day become a surgeon.

Headmaster’s List student Sarah excels both in the classroom and on the courts. Splitting her time between three beloved sports (volleyball, basketball, and track), Sarah has been recognized with various athletic awards including the Azalea City Kiwanis Club Female Athlete of the Week, the Varsity Volleyball Bulldog Spirit Award, the Elizabeth Damson Most Valuable Player in volleyball, and the Lady Bulldog GRIT Award for basketball. In addition to sports, Sarah was involved in the Student Government Association; was a member of the Yearbook staff; served in the Meteorology, French, and Photography Clubs, and was SGA Vice President of Athletics her senior year. Sarah loves giving back to her community, having volunteered her time with the Ronald McDonald House as an Ambassador, and worked with adolescent patients at USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital. One of her favorite memories from her senior year was playing bingo with residents of a local retirement home. Listening to their stories changed Sarah’s outlook on life, she says, making her appreciate every experience and the ways in which she can learn from them. Sarah will attend the Honors College at Ole Miss where she will major in accounting and hopefully go on to law school one day.

Libby Kirby, 18 Daughter of Dr. & Mrs. Scott Kirby St. Paul’s Episcopal School

Sports have been a part of Libby’s life ever since she can remember, from club sports to rigorously competing for her school. As an athlete, Libby has received the Player of the Week award for volleyball; was selected for All-County and AHSAA 5A and 6A All-State teams for both volleyball and swimming; was awarded Most Valuable Player in volleyball; and has been privileged to win three state championships in both sports throughout her school career. Libby’s swim coach since she was 7 years old, Tyler Kerns, has truly influenced her life by showing her what hard work and dedication looks like and how to approach each situation you put yourself in with a good and strong attitude. He has allowed her to flourish in the hardest situations and become a stronger and better person. At school, Libby is also involved in the Student Government Association, serves as the vice president of Interact Club, was selected as part of the Homecoming Court during her sophomore and senior years, and has given her time to the Ronald McDonald House the past two years with her peers. Upon graduating, Libby will attend Auburn University where she will major in public relations with a minor in business and photography, working towards her goal of working for a media source in the public relations and photography departments, and eventually owning her own firm and photography business.

Anne Katherine Scott, 18 Daughter of Dr. & Mrs. Paul Scott St. Paul’s Episcopal School National Merit Finalist, two-time Student Government Association officer, and editor-in-chief of her school paper, “The Epistle,” Anne Katherine is a rock star in her own right. A self-proclaimed “creative type,” she can often be found creating music, sewing, knitting, or baking. Sharing her talents with the world has become second nature, as she can’t remember a time when she wasn’t performing in music or theatre. She has competed in more than 18 piano competitions, receiving distinction in more than two-thirds of them. Anne Katherine also qualified for the highest all-state orchestra in Alabama, as well as the international level in musical theatre performance for the International Thespian Society. Her sophomore year, she was awarded the Josh Justice Memorial Scholarship Award, a recognition for carrying on Josh’s legacy of dedication to theatre and bringing joy to others. Anne Katherine guides herself on the principle, “Have empathy, perspective, and remember those outside of your bubble are people too.” Living by this daily, Anne Katherine plans to study psychology with a minor in music, hoping to practice counseling in some form, or even go into psychological research.

Claire Tatum, 18 Daughter of Mr. Bob Tatum & Ms. Eve Tatum St. Paul’s Episcopal School A creative at heart, Claire has been pursuing art since childhood, going on to participate an any artistic groups her school had to offer, be it as president of the Art Club or editorin-chief of her school’s literary and art magazine. A talented artist, Claire’s work has been displayed in the Lyons Share Gallery in Fairhope and chosen to represent Alabama in the National Art Convention Youth Art Month Exhibit in Boston.

Further excelling academically, Claire was presented with the Yale Book Award; inducted into the National Honor Society and the National Art Honor Society; and was an AP Scholar.

Claire says her mother, Eve, serves as a constant inspiration in her life, as her mother consistently overcomes every obstacle in her path while never failing to radiate compassion. Claire says she strives to be as caring, courageous, and driven as her mother in every aspect of her life. Claire plans to attend either Rollins College or Davidson College in the fall to pursue an artistic career with a specific focus on sharing the power of creative expression. She hopes to help others one day through either art therapy or art education.

Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Ian Rosenthal St. Paul’s Episcopal School Having recently been accepted at the University of Virginia, Alex is shooting for the stars, literally! She plans to major in astrophysics (and perhaps aerospace engineering), as studying the inner workings of space has always been her goal. At St. Paul’s, Alex is a member of the National Honor Society, the Student Government Association, and the Mentor Club. The National Merit Finalist is also currently a semifinalist in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. Outside of the classroom, she is a dedicated member of St. Paul’s soccer, basketball, and cross-country teams. Along with several friends, Alex also made a huge impact on her school during her junior year by helping to extend the reach of the Mentor Club. Formerly offered to students through 5th grade, the group extended the invitation through 8th grade to help continue to expose at-risk kids for alcohol use to positive role models. One of Alex’s own role models is Katherine Johnson from “Hidden Figures,” who bravely asserted herself in her male-dominated career, while simultaneously landing someone on the moon.

Alex hopes to understand her future field of study as well as Johnson did.

Star student Rebecca (or Becca, as her friends call her) has a long list of achievements that are nothing short of impressive. She has served as a Student Ambassador, president of her junior class in the Student Government Association, president of the Honor Council, and editor of the yearbook, and is a member of the Key Club, National Honor Society, Latin Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society, Quill and Scroll Honor Society, and Rho Kappa Honor Society. Becca was named Salutatorian of her graduating class. She has served as captain of the girls’ varsity soccer team her senior year and has also been awarded with numerous honors and awards in response to her dedication to academics, including the Sewanee Book Award, Honors Physics Award, Latin II and III Awards, PreAP History Award, and the English 10 Award.

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) is also extremely important to Becca, as she has spent much of her high school career encouraging other young women in her community to pursue education in STEM. She strives to help increase diversity in STEM careers and encourage other girls to pursue these fields — no matter what other people say to them. Just like her role model Jo March from “Little Women,” Becca is determined to persevere despite the challenges she will face. Becca will continue her education at the University of South Alabama, where she will study computer science. She plans to earn her master’s degree (and perhaps even a Ph.D.) to attain her dream job working for a federal agency in cyber security.

Elizabeth Roebuck, 18 Daughter of Mr. Lloyd & Mrs. Laurie Roebuck St. Luke’s Episcopal School Having played on the volleyball, track, and basketball teams throughout her high school career, Elizabeth has racked up an impressive list of athletic achievements. She received the Girls Class 1A Regional MVP award; was on the 4x400 relay team, taking the state runner up title her sophomore year; was on the volleyball 2A State Championship team; served as a captain of both the basketball and volleyball teams; and was also on Mobile’s All-County basketball team for two years.

As a senior, she was honored for scoring 1,000 points during her years of playing basketball at St. Luke’s. In addition, she maintained a high academic average, achieving placement on the Headmaster’s List and Honor Roll each semester, and was inducted into the National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, History National Honor Society, and Mu Alpha Theta. Elizabeth also shadowed a NICU nurse at USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital as part of her senior project.

She will attend the University of South Alabama pursuing a degree in the medical field and plans to obtain an EMT certificate her first semester to work as an EMT throughout her collegiate run. Upon graduating, she plans to attend physical assistance school in pursuit of a medical career.

Abigail Wentland, 18 Daughter of Mr. Jim & Mrs. Sonya Wentland St. Luke’s Episcopal School A natural born musician, Abigail can almost always be found writing her own music, having often performed her compositions on her piano at school talent shows and local nursing homes. “When I first started performing, it was very hard for me to be vulnerable enough to play my own work, but once I started I found it was a great outlet to connect to others while simultaneously expressing myself,” she shares. At school she is a member of the Honor Council, the National Honor Society, and serves as a Student Ambassador. Abigail has also received the Harvard Book Award, a testament to her love for reading and writing, and was chosen as a DAR Good Citizen during her time at St. Luke’s. Strong females of the past and present such as Betty Friedman and Malala Yousafzai constantly inspire Abigail to work hard for whatever she wants to achieve, and to not let any opposition keep her down.

She plans to attend Samford University in the fall where she will major in political science and pursue a career as a lawyer.

Daughter of Mr. Mitchell & Mrs. Tami Windham St. Luke’s Episcopal School Though Shelby’s senior year has been cut short, she says she can’t help but look back on her time at St. Luke’s as some of the best years of her life. Throughout her four years, Shelby was a member of the Friends of Exceptional Children Club; elected president of Key Club; was a member of the Honor Council; was a Student Government Association class representative; played as captain on the varsity girls’ soccer team; and was initiated as a member of the Spanish, Mu Alpha Theta, and National Honor Societies. Shelby was named Valedictorian of her graduating class. Outside of school, Shelby competed in Mobile County’s Distinguished Young Women and finished as a Top 5 Finalist in Fitness and Self-Expression, and was awarded the honor of serving as one of the 50 Azalea Trail Maids chosen as our city’s ambassadors. Shelby’s personal motto is: “Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love,” which she expresses through her dedication to giving back to those around her. When asked who has made the most impact on her life, Shelby says it was her yearbook teacher, Mrs. Matthews, who increased her love for photography and has given her advice that will leave a lifelong impact. In the fall, Shelby will enter the pre-med track at The University of Alabama and hopes to pursue a future career as a general surgeon.

Cross-country and track and field star Claire Frazier is a three-time State Champion in track; set a new 7A indoor 800m state record; was a 2019 Runner-Up State Heptathlete; was named to the All-County team for XC and track; received All-State honors in XC; was named the Coastal Alabama Female Co-Runner of the Year; and served as captain of her team her senior year. Outside of sports, Claire Frazier was the National Honor Society vice president; a member of the Key Club, Friends of Exceptional Children Club, and Mu Alpha Theta; volunteered with Girls on the Run; and served as a school ambassador. In addition to track and school, Claire Frazier is equally passionate about music, having recently released an original song entitled, “I Want You Bad.” Claire Frazier’s biggest role model has been her teacher, friend, and confirmation sponsor, Lauren Alley, who has shown her just how important it is to put God first, and always radiates positivity around her. Continuing her passion for sports, Claire Frazier recently signed with the University of Virginia to run cross-country and track and field. Though she isn’t sure what she wants to study, she hopes to incorporate her love for music into her future.

Ava Eways, 18 Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Erik Eways McGill-Toolen Catholic High School For the past four years, Ava has rigorously studied a curriculum of AP and honors courses through McGill’s Aquinas Program. She was awarded the Red Ribbon Leadership Award, inducted into the National Honors Society, served as a Student Ambassador, and was a member of the volleyball team for two years. Dedicated to giving back, Ava organized a service project collecting money for The Shelter, a women’s substance abuse center. In July 2019, she traveled to Guatemala on a mission trip where she spent 10 days at an all girls’ orphanage laying the foundation for a new washhouse. Though their physical work was important, Ava says the best part of the trip was spending time with the girls there, playing with them and showing them that they are more loved than they may realize. Ava strives to love in the way her role model, Mother Teresa (Saint Teresa of Calcutta), did and hopes to make an impact on the world in the same way her life affected it. Furman University is next on Ava’s list, where she will consider a major in special education, but says she remains open-minded for now.

Anna Wentworth, 18 Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Sean Wentworth McGill-Toolen Catholic High School A true testament to her academic achievements, Anna was chosen as Salutatorian for her graduating class at McGillToolen this year — an honor befitting such a standout Yellow Jacket. The Aquinas Scholar is a member of the National Honor Society; was a member of the Key Club where she served as vice president her senior year; has been a dedicated member of the varsity cross-country and track and field teams; and was awarded the Captain’s Award her senior year for displaying and exemplifying traits of the ideal teammate.

In addition, Anna was a member of the Chamber Singers (McGill’s highest choir) for two years and was chosen by her teachers to receive the Outstanding Junior Female award.

Anna is also dedicated to service, having acted as a mentor in her school’s Annunciation Program where she assisted special needs students at McGill every day and helped to organize a food drive for Feeding the Gulf Coast, which collected 415 lbs. of food for people in need. In the fall, Anna will attend the University of South Alabama where she will major in secondary education with a concentration in math. She dreams of becoming a high school teacher so she may make a difference in teenagers’ lives, just as her teachers did.

Invested in the arts, Rivers acted in many of her high school’s theatre productions throughout her four years at McGill, earning the lead role in “Into the Woods” her senior year. She was also a member of McGill’s top choral group, Chamber Singers, serving as an officer the last two years, and was awarded the Gonzales Performing Arts Music Award, recognizing her exceptional vocal musical performances in both choral and theatrical productions. Rivers served as a school ambassador the past three years, and was also a member of Servants of the Poor, Key Club, the Chemistry Club, and Physics Club. She received the Sandy and LaVeral Sanders Scholarship as a rising senior for exemplifying the idea that excellence begins with character. Rivers says her biggest inspiration is her grandmother, Beth Haley, who lives life to the fullest every day, and has taught Rivers to live her life through Christ and to always strive to help others. She plans to attend the University of Montevallo in the fall where she will major in psychology and sociology with a focus in criminology, hoping to eventually earn her Ph.D. one day.

She was part of the IB Program her freshman through junior year and the UA Early College her sophomore through senior year. Olivia has also been an active member of the Student Government Association and the Panther Pal’s Club, which helps plan events for special needs students at MHS. In the philanthropy sector, Olivia has volunteered at local events and the Mulherin Home, having also served as a member of Strong. Pure. Lovely. (SPL), whose mission is to empower young girls through serving others and celebrating life. She works at Nasser Gymnastics during the week and lifeguards during the summer, and in her free time enjoys going to the beach, hanging out with friends, being outdoors, and trying new foods. She plans to attend either Auburn University or The University of Southern Mississippi in the fall, majoring in either architecture or interior design. Murphy High School When it comes to her volleyball skills, Dasani spikes the competition, having played two years on JV and three years on varsity for MHS, as well as a year a piece for the Legacy Volleyball Club, Starlings Volleyball Club, and Lower Alabama Volleyball. Off the court, Dasani served as a member of the Panther Pals, the International Baccalaureate Council, the Honor Council, and the Mobile Azalea Trail.

In her free time, Dasani says she enjoys spending time with friends and family and trying new trends on the ever-popular social media platform TikTok. Having received merit scholarship offers to every school that accepted her (as well as one athletic scholarship offer), Dasani has ultimately accepted a full-tuition scholarship to the University of South Alabama and plans to start in the fall, where she intends to major in biomedical sciences and minor in Spanish. She plans to attend medical school after her time at USA with a focus in radiology. Her favorite quote? One from her favorite music artist, J. Murphy High School A one-year JV and two-year varsity cheerleader (having served as this year’s co-captain) for the Panthers and executive vice president for MHS’s Student Government Association, Kiera is the epitome of school spirit and leadership.

With a volunteer’s heart, Kiera also helped raise funds for victims of 2018’s Hurricane Michael in Panama City, assisting in collecting necessities for families affected by the storm.

She has also been an avid supporter of the area’s Toys for Tots campaign, which seeks to collect toys for impoverished children or families down on their luck in our community.

In her downtime, Kiera enjoys dancing, reading, combing YouTube, and hanging out with friends. She plans to attend The University of Southern Mississippi on an Academic Excellence Scholarship in the fall, having also received the Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship, which recognizes high school seniors for their community service, academic performance, and leadership skills. She intends to pursue a career as a registered nurse and specialize in trauma care, after which she plans to further her education to become a nurse practitioner. Murphy High School As a STEP tutor and member of the Panther Pals, Four Arts Club, National English Honor Society, and National Honor Society at MHS, Mollee puts the “in” in “involved.” With a passion for dance, she has also performed as a part of the Dynamics Dance Company for four years and has attended the Sheffield School of the Dance for 13 years — a testament to her poise and focus outside of the classroom as well. Philanthropically, Mollee serves as a Camp SMILE counselor and as a literacy mentor for local elementary schools through the National Elementary Honor Society. In her free time, Mollee enjoys bullet journaling, choreography, and poetry writing, and says she lives by the mantra, “Find out who you are and do it on purpose,” as quoted by Dolly Parton. She has received full-tuition scholarship offers from The University of Alabama, UAB, and The University of Southern Mississippi, and was also awarded the Joseph Langan Scholarship from the Murphy High Class of 1931 and a J.L. Bedsole Scholarship to the school of her choice. Mollee plans to attend The University of Alabama in the fall and double major in mathematics and dance. She hopes to one day serve as a lawyer or actuary, as well as advocate for the arts in schools and in Alabama in general.

Having taken more than 13 AP courses during her high school career, Destiny will be graduating in the top 1 percent of her class with an impressive 5.02 GPA. At school she was the vice president of the National Honor Society, secretary of the Rho Kappa Honor Society, a Fellowship of Christian Athletes leader, and a varsity cheerleader. Destiny was also humbly selected as First Lady in Waiting of the 20192020 Azalea Trail Court, crowned Miss Hornet 2019, and was a UCA 2019 All-American Cheerleader. She is heavily involved as a volunteer for Feeding the Gulf Coast, Christ United Methodist Church’s “Celebrate Recovery” Program, the St. Mary’s Home Christmas Celebration, and “Night to Shine.” Destiny is extremely proud of her past and how she has overcome odds seemingly stacked against her, forging a path of accomplishments along the way. She will attend The University of Alabama in the fall to major in psychology and minor in criminal justice on the pre-med track. She then hopes to continue to medical school to one day become a forensic psychiatrist, combining her biggest passions in life: mental health and justice. Her goal is to bring awareness to the stigma behind mental health by helping those silently suffering while simultaneously bringing justice to the criminal system through a psychological lens.

Danielle Guy, 17 Daughter of Ms. Ashley Harvey Baker High School No exam or test can stand in the way of Danielle, having passed all her AP exams thus far and scoring an impressive 35 on the ACT. Danielle has a true passion for chemistry and was awarded a certificate of recognition for Outstanding Performance in Chemistry from the Mobile Local Section of the American Chemical Society. In fact, Danielle cites her amazing chemistry teacher, Mrs. Stevens, as one of her top role models, as she introduced Danielle to a whole new world of science, and taught her to love and appreciate the intricate web between biology, chemistry, physics, and math, all while encouraging her to challenge herself through honest advice. Of course, Danielle says she owes a lot to her mother, who reminds Danielle to see each passing day as a blessing. A first-generation college student, Danielle plans on double majoring in psychology and chemistry with a focus in biochemistry, as well as double minoring in political science and economics. She dreams of one day working with Doctors Without Boarders or going into pharmaceutical research and development.

Kyla Mae Pascua, 18 Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Pascua Baker High School Never one to back down from a challenge, Kyla successfully balanced 10 AP classes and her time on the basketball team at Baker all four years of her high school career. She was also a member of several clubs while in school including Rho Kappa, the National Honor Society, Multicultural Club, and Key Club. Kyla received academic lettering, and has gathered an impressive 30+ hours of community service. Kyla has a wonderful group of people who have supported her and shaped her into the woman she is today including her parents, who originally hailed from the Philippines and made the brave decision to move their family to America to provide them a wonderful life. Her father’s dedication has set an example for Kyla, and she strives to be as compassionate and caring as her mother. She also credits teacher Jennifer Stevens, who taught Kyla to never stop learning and has shown unconditional love to Kyla no matter what. Above all, Kyla says she owes her success to God, as every talent and gift that has been given to her is all credited to Him. In the fall, Kyla will attend The University of Alabama to major in chemical engineering on the pre-med track. She plans to have a career in medicine, with a focus in pediatrics.

An AP Scholar, Kennedy has successfully balanced a rigorous AP course load while simultaneously devoting her time to clubs like the Multicultural Club and the Health Occupations Students Of America (HOSA), now known as Future Health Professionals. While in HOSA, Kennedy was inducted into the National Technical Honor Society, and obtained a wide variety of healthcare licenses during her time at school.

Kennedy was also a member of the volleyball team and manager of the basketball team. Outside of school, she was elected as the Gulf Coast District (GCD) president for the Junior Knights of St. Peter Claver, which allowed Kennedy to help others on both the local and national level, helping her to earn the GCD Leadership Award for her efforts. Kennedy also participated in the 2019-2020 MAMGA Junior Royal Court, and was chosen as a member of the Tillman’s Corner Chamber of Commerce Leadership Program. Kennedy aspires to help others just like her role model, Mobile native and former U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin, who was the first African American elected to the AMA’s Board of Trustees and spent the majority of her time helping poor families in our area. Kennedy plans to attend Dillard University where she will major in nursing and minor in Spanish on her road to becoming a nurse practitioner with a focus in pediatrics or obstetrics and gynecology.

A competitor through-and-through, Kaleigh knows what it takes to succeed both on and off the field, having played varsity softball for the Admirals from 7th grade through her freshman year and varsity soccer her junior and senior year.

She was selected as a team captain this year, only to have the season cut short due to school closures. In the classroom, Kaleigh excelled as a member of the Student Government Association, having previously served as secretary and selected as Student Body President for the 2019-2020 school year, and has also been an active member of the Honor Council, Peer Helpers, and the National Honor Society. Off campus, she participates in productions with the Eastern Shore Repertory Theatre. In the charity sector, Kaleigh was a founding member of the National Charity League’s Eastern Shore Chapter and has volunteered with her church’s youth group and served on four mission trips over the years.

Kaleigh will attend Auburn University in the fall as part of the Honor’s Program on a Spirit of Auburn Presidential Scholarship, having also earned an additional scholarship through her church. Bayside Academy Alex has dominated the athletic arena for the Bayside Admirals for most of her high school career, having played volleyball for three years, running track for two, and serving as a cheerleader for one year for the private academy.

Academically, Alex served as a Key Club member, Student Ambassador, Fellowship of Christian Athletes leader, and as Student Government vice president, having also volunteered her time at the Prodisee Pantry and for the Rotary Youth Club. In her free time, Alex enjoys working out and finding/ creating healthy recipes, as well as interning at 3Circle Church. Already a small business owner, she makes and sells homemade candles and cards under the name Light of Mine Candle Co. with a portion of the proceeds benefiting The Rose Center, a Mobile-area drop-in facility for victims of human trafficking and abuse. She has also taken up photography, having done six senior shoots with several more scheduled.

In addition to garnering multiple academic scholarships from Samford University, Alex received an athletic scholarship as a pole vaulter and will serve on the Bulldog’s track team this fall. She hopes to work for a Birmingham-area hospital after receiving her degree as a forensic nurse and plans to seek out a sex-trafficking/abuse victim shelter to assist when she’s not doing her rounds for her ward. “I hope to mentor young girls that have been victimized and walk with them along their healing process, helping them physically, emotionally, and spiritually,” she says.

Bayside Academy A competitive equestrian, Bayside Admiral Bailey knows a “bit” about staying balanced (horse humor — we couldn’t resist!). Having been involved with Key Club, Service Club, Baking Club, National Honor Society, the tennis team, the “Azimuth Circle” literary magazine, and as founder and president of Women of Bayside, Bailey really knows how to “rein” in her talents (okay, okay… we’ll stop). Philanthropically, Bailey has volunteered with the Pirates Cove Autism Fundraiser, “High Hopes for Autism,” the last four years, and has helped out at the Ronald McDonald House and various veterans’ homes as well. In her free time, Bailey enjoys riding horses, working out, listening to music, and spending quality time with her friends. She plans to attend The University of Alabama on academic scholarship in the fall, where she intends to major in marketing and eventually become a marketing manager for a major corporation. Her personal mantra? A quote from Audrey Hepburn: “As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands: one for helping yourself, and one for helping others.”

Bayside Academy Life is better in running shoes for Bayside Academy cross-country standout Anna, who says she’s been keeping the pace for the Admirals since the 7th grade. A varsity runner since her sophomore year, Anna was selected as team captain this year, adding to her long list of Bayside accolades including former Key Club treasurer and secretary; Art Guild president; National Honor Society officer; and Art and Prose Editor for the school’s literary magazine, “Azimuth Circle.”

She has also held membership with Bayside’s Leadership Council and Peer Helpers. In addition to Key Club, Anna has worked with the Eastern Shore Chapter of the National Charity League since her freshman year, having performed as vice president of philanthropy her junior year and this year as senior class president. Through both organizations Anna has accrued more than 200 volunteer service hours at her local youth club focusing on literacy and art for underprivileged children and has also held an internship with the Eastern Shore Art Center for the past four years. Though she has been accepted to several universities and offered scholarships including the Honors College Scholarship at Northeastern University and a Presidential Scholarship to Auburn University (as well as being selected as a semifinalist for a meritbased scholarship at the University of Notre Dame), Anna has yet to decide where she will attend. She does know, however, that she plans to double major in art and neuroscience in order to understand how the human brain perceives visual information and how that can, in turn, be applied to design.

Admirably ambitious and exceedingly driven, Ashanti Ash has excelled in her roles with FHS’s Student Government Association, National Honor Society, and Peer Helpers over the years, showcasing her aptitude for leadership as Senior Class President and president of her school’s Black Student Union for the 2019-2020 academic year. In the philanthropy sector, Ashanti has served as a regular volunteer at the Fairhope Point Clear Rotary Club since 2016, and occasionally volunteers at the Daphne Black Education Museum along with the Black Student Union. In her free time, Ashanti enjoys spending time with friends, family, and her dog, Bella, and says she is obsessed with movies and cinematography. She also enjoys drawing and painting, regularly doing commissions. Having received scholarship offers from The University of Tennessee, Auburn University, The University of Alabama, Rhodes College, and Howard University in Washington, D.C., Ashanti says she plans to attend Howard University in the fall on her quest to become a pathologist.

Fairhope High School Leading with a servant’s heart, Fairhope Pirate Amelia has dedicated countless hours of charity work through her school’s Key Club and Future Business Leaders of America while simultaneously holding membership in the FHS AP History Club and on the Teen Literacy Council. As a junior, Amelia was elected as Head of Projects for Key Club and vice president for FBLA, upping the ante her senior year as president for both organizations. Her favorite charitable endeavors include working on the FBLA Care Closet, the FBLA Prom Project FHS hosts for all Baldwin County schools, and fundraising for Children’s of Alabama Hospital through Key Club. Amelia says the projects completed at her school were the most impactful to her because she was able to personally witness the differences made in the lives of her peers in need. Off campus, Amelia takes dance classes at Creative Outlet Dance Center seven hours a week and has worked at Mr. Gene’s Beans in Downtown Fairhope part-time during the school year and summer. When she’s able to take a break from her busy schedule, Amelia enjoys reading, painting, and going on walks by the Bay with her sisters. Amelia has been awarded generous academic merit and accountancy school scholarships from The University of Mississippi and plans to participate in their Honors College and accounting program in the fall. While she is not set on a particular career path, she says she plans to take advantage of all of the resources the university has to offer and participate in internships that will hopefully guide her career choice, living by Walt Disney’s advice: “All of our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.”

In the classroom, Devin let her light shine as vice president of the Future Business Leaders of America and leader of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, as well as through her membership in the FHS Interact Club, the National Honor Society, and Mu Alpha Theta. Through FBLA, Devin helped to create a Care Closet on campus stocked with food, clothes, shoes, school supplies, and more for students in need to visit privately. Having served as an athletic trainer’s assistant for the DHS football team since her freshman year, Lillie has devoted countless hours to attending to the needs of student athletes, while simultaneously excelling as a swimmer for the DHS swim team since the 7th grade (on varsity since her freshman year). She has held the title of team captain three times and has competed at the state meet in Auburn. She served as a part of the Student Government Association for the entirety of her high school career and was elected president her senior year. Lillie joined the yearbook staff her sophomore year as a design editor, was promoted to co-editor as a junior, and served as editor-in-chief her senior year, accruing multiple state awards for her designs and photography along the way.

She presented at the Alabama Scholastic Press Association in Tuscaloosa and the National Press Association in Washington D.C. during her senior year, having also held membership in the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and Project Outreach. Philanthropically, Lillie has volunteered at Thomas Hospital and the American Autism and Rehabilitation Center, and in her free time loves delving into graphic design, writing, photography, and videography. Lillie secured several local scholarships (including one from the Bryant-Jordan Scholarship Program, which recognizes top student athletes in the state of Alabama), and will attend UCLA in the fall on scholarship, looking to continue to work in a football-focused career in relation to sports medicine. She hopes to work for the NFL after graduating medical school.

Daphne High School A four-year varsity tennis player, Savannah has made big moves both on and off the court, having also served as a member of the National Honor Society, Student Government Association, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Mu Alpha Theta, Key Club, FCCLA, and as Senior Class President during her time at DHS. In the charity sector, she is a founding member of the National Charity League (Eastern Shore Chapter), which is a nonprofit mother-daughter organization that fills volunteer needs with groups like the Exceptional Foundation, Family Promise of Baldwin County, McKemie Place, Prodisee Pantry, The Haven, and more. She also interns for her youth pastor at 3Circle Church where she works on community outreach projects through their youth program. In her free time, Savannah enjoys playing tennis, watching sunsets over the Bay, hanging out with friends and family, and “spending time in The Word.” A Trojan Leadership Scholarship recipient, she plans to attend Troy University in the fall and intends to study elementary education as she works toward becoming a Kindergarten teacher one day. Having recently signed with The University of Southern Mississippi to play Division 1 Beach Volleyball, Madison’s four years on the DHS volleyball team (JV one year; varsity three) and her training as a beach volleyball athlete have obviously served her well. Off the court, Madison was a member of the National Honor Society, Student Government Association, Mu Alpha Theta, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

An avid volunteer, she has helped pack meals for 3Circle Church’s “Feed My Starving Children” initiative, participated in service work at area schools, helped with hurricane relief along the Florida Panhandle, and has gone on multiple mission trips to Costa Rica. In her free time, Madison enjoys crafting, reading, listening to/watching true crime podcasts and documentaries, spending time with family and friends, and serving others. She received academic scholarship offers from The University of Southern Mississippi, the University of North Alabama, The University of Alabama, and Troy University, as well as multiple leadership scholarship offers from the University of North Alabama. Though currently undecided on a career path, Madison says she has been leaning toward a degree in speech pathology, noting that no matter her choice, she wants it to be “for the good of others.”

Daphne High School DHS standout Jordan has never shied from leadership opportunities, having served as a member of the Student Government Association, Recording Studio, Science Bowl, Diversity Club, Quidditch Club, Theatre Club, and as her Class Historian (three years). She served two years on the JV volleyball team and one on varsity, as well as four years as a varsity golfer. In the charity sector, Jordan serves as the Teen Foundation Chair for the Mobile Chapter of Jack and Jill, Inc., which plans events that benefit the local community. She has volunteered with the United Way of Baldwin County, the Ronald McDonald House, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk, NAMI, and the Mobile SPCA Foundation. During the summer, Jordan volunteers with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Shining Star Camp and serves year-round with her church performing as a social media manager, sound/video streaming technician, and as corresponding secretary for the Youth Department. In her free time, Jordan enjoys reading, gardening, biking, and spending time with her family and two dogs. An avid philanthropist, Brinson also serves as an ambassador for the Historic Mobile Preservation Society giving tours at the Historic Oakleigh House Museum as part of the Oakleigh Belle Leadership Program; is a performer with the Agape Hands Puppet Ministry at Spanish Fort United Methodist Church; and has volunteered weekly at her local public library for the last three years. In her free time, Brinson loves writing stories and hopes to publish her own novel one day and enjoys sewing and working on reproductions of historical clothing. An entertainer from a young age, she recently performed as Anna Maria in “Godspell” and as Fantine in “Les Miserables.” She has received scholarships from the Distinguished Young Women of Baldwin County 2020 as First Runner Up, talent winner, and scholastics winner, and received the 2nd Place Essay Award for the 59th Annual Dogwood Trail Pageant. She also served in the Broadcasting Club and conducted SFHS’s morning announcements. Philanthropically, Fariha works as the national ambassador for Ready to Run, a nonprofit whose mission is to end gender disparity in political offices by encouraging girls to run for leadership positions as young adults. She enjoys reading, acting, hosting/producing for local band Vintage Sounds, and public speaking, and has reached the interstate level of the Optimist Speech Competition twice. She received the President’s Service Award in 2019 from President Donald Trump, and has been offered full ride scholarships from The University of Alabama, Auburn University, and The University of Houston and partial scholarships from Baylor, Texas A&M, UC San Diego, and UC Davis. A member of SFHS’s 2018 and 2019 6A State Championship volleyball team, Corinne’s approach has always been keen, having served one year on JV and three years on varsity. Sans pads and jersey, Corinne spikes the competition academically as well, having held membership in Project Outreach, the Student Leadership Team, Peer Helpers, and the French National Honor Society, as well as having served as Student Government Association vice president, French Club president, and National Honor Society vice president over the course of her high school career. Off campus, Corinne serves as a “Caroline’s Crew” ambassador for the Berry Strong Foundation helping to promote childhood cancer awareness in honor of friend Caroline Berry, who lost her two-year battle with the disease on Thanksgiving Day 2018. She also served in the special needs classrooms at Spanish Fort High School assisting her peers, and has taken part in “Night to Shine” and “Special Pops Prom” over the years — two area events that highlight and celebrate special needs students in the Bay Area. Having been awarded a merit-based Capstone Scholarship, the Girls State Scholarship (2019 Alabama Girls State Delegate), and the Luther C. Callahan Memorial Scholarship — all three from The University of Alabama — Corinne will be “Rolling with the Tide” come fall and plans to pursue a degree in marketing on the pre-law track.

She hopes to one day serve as a child-advocate attorney for children who cannot speak for themselves, playing into her personal mantra: “Be somebody who makes everybody feel like somebody.”

Throughout her high school career, she could often be found volunteering with cleanup efforts after football games, tutoring fellow students, or helping to organize various donation drives at SFHS. Off campus, Bernadette volunteers at the McKemie Place Women’s Shelter in Mobile, as well as with her younger siblings’ youth groups, having served as a team leader on middle school student retreats annually with Christ the King.

She also volunteers at the Fall Festival and Field Day for each of Spanish Fort’s two elementary schools every year. In her free time, Bernadette enjoys scuba diving, fishing, cooking, and spending time with friends at the beach. She has received the highest level of academic scholarship offers from Auburn University, The University of South Alabama, and UAB, with plans to attend Auburn University in the fall with a focus in biomedical sciences. He was on the track and field team and ran on the varsity cross country team all four years, competing at State each year. His favorite sport is lacrosse, which he enjoyed for eight years. Compassionate and caring, she has volunteered with various organizations over the past four years while simultaneously serving as a hostess at her family’s restaurant, Dumbwaiter. This fall, Ashton will attend The University of Alabama at Birmingham majoring in biomedical sciences with plans to attend medical school upon graduation — her sights set on a career in dermatology. Though she will miss lattes at The Coffee Loft, soaking up the sun in Orange Beach, and hanging out with friends, Ashton says she is excited for the opportunities that await her in Birmingham.

Bayside Academy’s Annie Loper has a lot to celebrate. The daughter of Katherine Lapeyrouse and Jeremy Loper, Annie (18), has been a great mentor through her involvement with Peer Helpers and as a Student Ambassador.

On the varsity cheer team all four years, she served as team captain her senior year, landing the same role for the Admiral’s soccer team after six years of dedicated play. She has been a tremendous leader on and off the field, having also served as a member of the Journalism, Photography, and Investment Clubs at Bayside. Known for always encouraging those around her, she has a natural gift for working with younger teammates to help them gain confidence and blossom as valued team players. Annie plans to attend The University of Alabama in the fall where she intends to major in marketing.

Lucy Lapeyrouse Congratulations Lucy Lapeyrouse! Graduating from St. Paul’s Episcopal School, Lucy (18), is the daughter of Mike Lapeyrouse and Jessica Lapeyrouse. Throughout her high school career, Lucy was involved in numerous clubs and organizations, including Gems (Girls Enrichment Ministries) and the Beta Sigma Chi Service Organization, and served as vice president for the Student Government Association her senior year.

She has also been an active volunteer with Camp Grace and served as team captain for this year’s varsity volleyball team at St. Paul’s. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends and is always willing to be the life of the party to put a smile on everyone’s face. When I met Danielle Butin, I was not only fascinated; I wanted in.

With her wild tresses, vivacious personality, and infectious laugh, she’s one smart cookie. And, she’s that person whose done it. Serving NYC and beyond, she shares how the COVID-19 crisis has literally turned her world upside down. But don’t worry — she’s got this.

eaving a successful career in healthcare, Danielle Butin answered her calling on a somewhat educated whim. Trusting her gut, she took a huge leap and never looked back. The result? She is changing and saving the world. And, given the pandemic, her work has never been more important.

As the founder of the Afya Foundation, Danielle takes medical supplies from hospitals in the New York area that are otherwise destined for landfills due to regulations and rapid technological advancements and sends them around the world where they are desperately needed. Who knew clean cotton swabs and blood pressure machines have a “use by” date?

But now the tide has changed and those desperate needs have washed up on our shores. Every bit a New Yorker, Danielle finds herself at ground zero once again in the COVID-19 outbreak. “The hospitals that used to give to us started calling in, desperate for PPE. Even the children of doctors and nurses were calling me asking for masks for their parents so they wouldn’t get sick

at work,” she shares. “Our model of collecting unused medical supplies has been completely turned upside down. Now, we’re finding supplies for those who once gave them to us.”

So, how has she accomplished this 180 degree turn? “From the start, Afya has used a different set of rules,” Danielle explains. “For example, a doctor reached out to me at 11 p.m. one evening desperate for N95 masks for his ER staff for the next day, as they had none. Using our unique relationships, we were able to deliver 500 masks by 7:30 a.m. the next morning.

Working outside the typical supply chain has made us nimble, fast, and effective,” she shares.

Successful in shifting gears to cover needs in America, the number of hospitals she’s supplying is too great to name. Notably, Elmhurst Hospital in Queens was described as the “epicenter of the epicenter” and is on her list. And it doesn’t stop there.

Federally qualified health centers that serve the poorest citizens and community agencies responsible for everything from nursing homes to dialysis centers also top the list of

those her foundation is supporting.

Keeping people caring for the elderly and homeless protected is what keeps Danielle up at night.

So, how does she do it? In normal times you will find an incredible mix of volunteers ranging from veterans, the elderly, and the special needs community at the Afya warehouse in Yonkers working together to sort and ship all these lifesaving supplies.

She couldn’t do it without them. In turn, they’ve found a life-fulfilling purpose — a brilliant win-win. “Now, we even have nurses from the New York Nursing Association helping us sort and pack shipments in the warehouse,” she says. “Volunteer master seamstresses are making masks.

One determined volunteer is even constructing disposable gowns out of surplus surgical drapes,” she beams.

For Danielle, it’s simple. “We protect those willing to protect us,” she says.

“These medical teams are accustomed to successfully healing people.

But loss after loss, I’ve heard terrified staff members in sobs, and the PTSD setting in. The fact anyone in this country would have to ask to be protected is unimaginable. Watching so many people die — no body bags, no gowns — the layers of this are catastrophic. This is what we see in poor nations. Seeing this in America has been unbelievable and why I can’t stop.”

Whew, it’s a lot to process. But she’s doing it. And to think it all started with a simple idea driven by a profound experience. “Africa had been calling me for a long time,” Danielle says.

“The moment I stepped on Tanzania’s earth, tears flooded my face and I knew my life was about to change. I specifically recall that hot day when I noticed a woman crying in a tent.

I asked why. She caught her breath, and said, ‘I am a highly sought-after physician from London. I took a month off to volunteer in the medical clinics here, but they have absolutely nothing. I cannot save children from malaria because there are no meds or IV bags of fluid. People come in with infected wounds, and I have nothing to treat them with.’ In that dusty tent, I realized there are moments in life when another person’s pain is so raw we experience it as our own. It screams at us to do something.”

Continuing, Danielle adds, “From my work experience, I knew there was a regulation-driven surplus of medical supplies that would land in waste streams back in the states. Hating the idea of all that waste, I knew I had to find a way to get those supplies.

That’s when the Afya Foundation took hold.”

Once home, she immediately put her experience in NYC healthcare to use. “I called hospitals eager

to learn about possible donations, and the staffs weren’t sure what to make of me,” Danielle says. “But I knew the abundance of supplies that were going to be discarded could be rescued and redirected abroad to sites in dire need due to natural disasters or health crises. And almost immediately, hospitals started donating.”

Recalling a specific incident, she shares, “A major hospital in NYC offered 27 pallets of supplies after flooding. I immediately said yes!

With no storage facility, a semi-trailer sat for three weeks outside my home. I didn’t care – it was filled with critical supplies destined to change lives.”

From there she launched Afya in 2007 and has proudly rescued and shipped supplies valued at $37 million to 83 territories worldwide. From Africa to Haiti, Puerto Rico, and Flint, Mich., Danielle has made it her mission that no one go without. As a result, they’ve diverted over 10 million pounds of waste from U.S. landfills.

That’s a lot of waste reduction, folks.

Adding New York to the list of communities Afya has helped has been a full-circle moment. It’s interesting to contemplate and certainly points to tuning into those making a difference, as you never know when you’ll need help. After all, it’s easy to ignore the needs when they are so far away. But is it wise and is it human?

“It’s really so simple,” Danielle says.

“Providing pathways for what will be wasted, we’ve created a caring community that not only saves lives, but our precious environment as well.

Meet Dr. Cynthia R. Crowder Hicks. In normal times she’s the medical director of the Sleep Lab at Mobile Infirmary and works in pulmonary medicine as well at the Diagnostic and Medical Clinic.

Identified as a leader in caring for local COVID-19 patients, Dr. Crowder Hicks shares what the new normal looks like on the frontlines.

or most, a pandemic was unthinkable. And it was for Dr. Crowder Hicks, too.

“I was the first pulmonary physician designated to cover the COVID-19 ward,” she says. “The beginning was truly an experience.

With a set of scrubs and protective equipment, I changed and proceeded to my station where everyone looks the same: hair coverings, face masks, booties, and scrubs. Each patient’s door draped in isolation dressings, I only see the eyes of my staff. They are eager and frustrated. However, in the midst of it all, they showed up willing to serve,” she shares.

Asked how a hospital could turn on a dime to quickly jump into pandemic-fighting action, Dr. Crowder Hicks says, “As the virus began to spread, it was evident we were experiencing a pandemic. Fortunately, Alabama began to see the virus later, which allowed time for preparation.

A COVID critical care task force was established and meetings were held at our Diagnostic and Medical Clinic and at Mobile Infirmary,” she

explains. The task force is comprised of the critical care physicians, anesthesiologists, internists, surgeons, neurosurgeons, nursing administrators, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, and hospital administrators who work diligently on plans to care for patients presenting with the COVID virus. “Working on worst case scenarios, the plan included physicians being on staff in 12-hour shifts, 24 hours a day,” Dr. Crowder Hicks says.

“With Individual medical specialties eliminated, our goal is to care for patients and minimize unnecessary staff exposure and fatigue.”

As a COVID task force leader, Dr. Crowder Hicks recalls those first steps into the COVID-19 unit. “As I rounded the hallways and made my way into the medical intensive care unit, the staff knew me, but I knew they were getting ready to know me better than ever before,” she starts. “‘Let’s huddle,’ I began. As I explained the plan, there was an immediate sense of relief. Typically, nurses are used to handling emergencies until a doctor arrives. With the

new around-the-clock physicians on hand plan, there was an immediate sense of hope and appreciation. That night, my nurse practitioner joined me, and we huddled with each unit, hearing those sighs of relief each time.”

While clearly humbled, we wonder the vibe in the COVID-19 unit and how she motivates her team. “I always try to keep a positive attitude,” she says. “There is a reason to smile and laugh every day, and I look for those openings. In general, my overall disposition remains positive, even during the frustrations. I definitely try to acknowledge concerns and offer words of encouragement to motivate them to push forward,” she shares. “So far, I think the team is coping well. For us, loss is not unfamiliar. I think we struggle with the ‘why.’ There are so many unknowns regarding this virus and the disease process. We are constantly thinking and reading to see if we can prevent further losses. As for our emotional state, we may need to revisit this after the pandemic has ended,” she says.

Not having exhausted their ventilator capacity, their influx of patients has been steady, but not to the degree of cities like New Orleans and New York. “This virus has so many unknowns,” Dr. Crowder Hicks says.

“Every patient is different. Some look chronically ill and slowly improve, and others look good and rapidly decline. You see oxygen requirements escalate in those not seemingly as ill.

Temperatures rise. Blood pressures become unpredictable. Breathing appears dysfunctional and ineffective. Things move very fast. This is when the basics of medicine begin.

All taught the ABCs (airway, breathing, circulation), this is where we start and work as a team to stabilize the patient.” Dr. Crowder Hicks says it’s at this point that her senses become heightened but acknowledges how important it is to keep her emotions controlled. “I think better that way,” she says. “The patient is intubated; adequate IV access obtained. Now, we work to improve oxygenation and optimize blood pressure and circulation. Each organ system is reviewed

and addressed. Despite being on the ventilator, we must continue to assess and reassess. It becomes methodical.

However, there is a level of anxiety in all arenas. All of our personnel have had to step up in different ways to assure the safety of patients and staff as we proceed,” Dr. Crowder Hicks shares.

On the subject of patients, she says, “Each patient has a different mindset.

Those who are ill want help. They are grateful. Those not as sick just want to get better. Most patients assume we’re positive just as we assume they’re positive. It makes for a good working environment,” she says.

“Also, despite all the medical paraphernalia, patients just want to talk. A calming voice or a soothing pat on the leg goes a long way.”

Reflecting, she adds, “Recently, I was approached by a colleague regarding a patient of mine who had been sick a few days. On the phone, the patient was audibly breathless. Concerned, she agreed to be seen at the screening tent and was immediately admitted into the hospital. She appeared weak but vocal. She has the sweetest disposition and is always helpful and kind. Unfortunately, she declined and required mechanical ventilation.

In general, this portends to a worse outcome. Fortunately, after prolonged time on a ventilator, she was able to be extubated. She continued to slowly improve, and the day of her discharge was a day of incredible celebration,” she shares.

Originally from Memphis and with a life-long long love for science and math, Dr. Crowder Hicks has always been surrounded by a family of educators and givers. “We’ve always been active participants in our church, community, and schools,” she says.

“My path of service came through medicine, as it speaks to me personally and intellectually. It makes me happy.”

And how about her life with her husband Timothy, daughter Camille (3), and stepson Kendell (14)? “I completely isolated from my family,” she says. “This proved to be more stressful for all involved. After long discussions, we decided it was best for me to take the necessary precautions to return home. Fortunately, I have a detached room where I can shower and leave worn clothes before entering my home. So far, we’re all healthy,” she shares.

of not just parent, but primary homemaker, preschool teacher, playmate, shopper, and chef. I thank him for packing my lunches and making my breakfast and dinner. I find great joy in family time and walks. These lead to great conversations and I hope to keep it up after this is over,” she shares. Both transplants, Dr. Crowder Hicks says her husband’s and her own extended family are not close by. “They’ve offered to assist, but in the spirit and order of social distancing, we try to respect all boundaries,” she shares. “This means it's just us!

However, I truly appreciate their calls and texts of support. Also, my recent ZOOM meeting with college sisters was an awesome source of stress relief,” she says.

Looking forward to family dinners and attending church services once the virus passes, her No. 1 way we can help is simple: “The only consistent model of flattening the curve has been social distancing. This is how everyone helps,” she concludes.

As for us? Dr. Crowder Hicks, we thank you for being in the trenches, for your sacrifices, and for your leadership. You may know how many lives you’ve helped save, but you will never know the number of lives you’ve touched.

Forging ahead on the battlefield at Springhill Medical Center, Meg Alston has been amazed by her team and looks forward to worrying less once the pandemic passes. But for now, she’s coordinating a sea of constantly changing plans around the evasive COVID-19 virus. Here, she shares her gratitude and frontline details.

pringhill Medical Center has always been a special place to Meg Alston. Part of the team for 26 years, she shares, “I’ve seen many wonderful things over the years, but nothing compares to the teamwork and cohesiveness I’ve witnessed these past few months.”

In normal times she spent her days in data coordination (think providing quarterly core measures data to Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services/The Joint Commission, as well as monitoring that data for performance improvement opportunities), but as of late, her focus has shifted.

Currently, Meg is in the trenches coordinating emergency management responses — a tall order given the fact most COVID-19 cases are emergencies. A leader in the hospital’s Command Center (which is set

up based on the National Incident Management System guidelines), Meg now thoroughly examines each aspect of various emergency situations and sets plans accordingly.

That’s a big responsibility given the unknown nature of the pandemic we’re facing.

Regarding the Command Center, Meg adds, “The Incident Command Center is comprised of remarkable individuals who have worked tirelessly to ensure we’re prepared on all levels for what the pandemic has brought and will bring in the future.”

Its members include Jeff St. Clair, President/CEO; Dr. Liston Jones, Chief Medical Officer; Paul Read, Chief Nursing Officer/VP; Sherri Stroud, Director of Quality Assurance; Paul Tomlinson, Director of Critical Care Services; Lamar Cooley, Special Projects Coordina-

tor; Millie Russell, Director of Infection Control/Employee Health; Ernie Livingston, Director of Surgery; and Kris McAuley, Quality Improvement and Risk Management Coordinator. “Although these have been at the core, there have been innumerable people whose efforts have enabled us to respond to this pandemic with success,” Meg says. “This group has been housed in one area seven days a week to ensure our staff and patients have access to the information needed. We have two daily meetings with our ownership, senior leadership, and directors of every department to ensure we’re all communicating pertinent information. With information and guidance changing so rapidly, this has enabled us to respond to the changes quickly.”

As for other frontline heroes, Meg shares, “I commend our nursing supervisors and frontline staff. Their efforts have truly been heroic. Our nurses, techs, transporters, Environmental Services, and dietary personnel have shown remarkable resilience and willingness to step out of their roles and assume responsibilities not normally performed. Our admitting and security personnel have put themselves at risk, often being the first people to come in contact with patients with an unknown COVID-19 status. I’m sure I’ve left someone out, but everyone’s efforts have been astounding!”

Meg is also invested in the patients.

“The most heartwarming moment came when we phoned a patient late at night to let her know her results were negative for COVID-19,” she shares. “Though we were hesitant to call so late, the patient began crying and let us know how thankful she was that we called. She would rest well for the first night in a week,” Meg says.

Confirming her thoughtful leadership, President/CEO Mr. Jeff St. Clair shares, "We owe a great deal of our

success during this crisis to Meg’s leadership, knowledge, and unflappable demeanor. She was the perfect person for this call to action!"

With the help of her husband Bob, things on the home front are going well. “I’ve been working at this hospital a long time, and my family is used to the odd hours and demands,” Meg says. “They’re totally supportive and understand what we do. With grown children, it’s a lot easier for me than for someone with younger children working on the front lines,” the mother of Katie (29) and Robert (23) shares.

In seemingly good shape, wellstaffed, and prepared, it’s interesting to know Springhill Medical Center is family owned. “Our ownership (Dr. Lee Wallace, Mrs. Celia Wallace, Mrs. K.C. Rudolph, and our Governing Body) along with our incredible staff of physicians have been instrumental in the success of the response to this pandemic,” Meg says. “Without their leadership and involvement, we would not have been able to respond with such agility.”

Looking forward to time with family and friends as well as the diminishing worry about the community, staff, and patients, Meg concludes, “The current COVID-19 pandemic has been the first of this magnitude that many of us have seen or will ever see in our lifetimes. We’ve all heard about the national CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act signed into law by the president on March 27, 2020.

But what about local caring? On the brink of bankruptcy, one local gem needs our help more than ever. Here, see why you should care.

R

ewinding time back a few months, a smile comes over my face as I recall the robust local philanthropic scene. Champagne towers, live music, and fun celebrations reigned, all in the name of charity. Ah, the good ole’ days.

Bleep, bop, bloop, and I come out of the fog. The truth is that even during good economic times, charitable organizations fought hard for those locally donated dollars to support everything from cancer research to drug education. There’s never been a time when money hasn’t mattered. So many causes, so few dollars. So, what now?

On a recent call with my friend Vince Kilborn, he and I (like we always do) tried to solve the world’s problems. A superstar trial lawyer who whacks on the biggies like Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., he’s got a big heart. Having supported

the founding of Fairhope’s premiere facility, the USA Mitchell Cancer Center’s Kilborn Clinic; a member of the Treadwell Foundation; and as the founder of The Learning Tree’s Kilborn’s Kids and more, he does his part. But Vince has enough sense to realize he didn’t get there alone. Crediting his career path and dedication to community service to his father (also a lawyer who helped many who couldn’t necessarily afford his services), Vince is worried.

I’m worried too.

Specifically, Vince is worried for local educational gem Prichard Preparatory. The struggle is real at present, and they can’t hold on much longer. With his impressive resume that includes more than 52 years in some of the nation’s toughest schools, I caught up with Principal Dr. Harold Dodge. The outlook? Not good, as the school’s just trying to keep the teachers paid so they can continue educating their

students virtually and keep the lights on. “This pandemic will result in a $300K shortage, and we’re paycheck to paycheck and on the brink,” Dr. Dodge says. “We need money now… we need a miracle,” he states bluntly.

For those not familiar, the school was founded by ACCESS fave Dr. Ruby Eldridge, who literally pulled kids

off the streets of this poverty-stricken community flooded with drugs, prostitution, and more to teach them how to read and write. Together with Sandy Stimpson (who eventually became the Mayor of Mobile), they put in the elbow grease and Prichard Preparatory was established in 2008.

students from Pre-K through 5th grade with a strong academic foundation, with the ultimate goal being to see them go on to attend college and become future leaders, thus helping the community develop into a safer, more economically sustainable place in which to live, work, and thrive.

And it’s worked.

It’s worked because the community has supported it. But with so much financial uncertainty and unparalleled need, why should you care? We’re all struggling for the most part. Well, for starters, Prichard Prep is no free ride. Parents of students are required to pay a portion of the tuition and to be involved. Most know local private school tuitions can be cost prohibitive, even for those making a decent living. “We serve 150 students,” Dr. Dodge shares. “We find the cream of the crop through testing, and it’s a team effort. Everyone has skin in the game. Also, our parents want better for their children, and with a magnet acceptance based on a computer picking your name in a lottery, we’re the only option for many families from West Mobile to Baldwin County. With community support we’ve been able to curate a top-notch curriculum that includes music and P.E. every day, Spanish lessons, and tutoring. We simply don’t allow children to fall through the cracks, and when they leave, they excel at other local private or magnet schools, which is a tremendous benefit to our entire community,” he says. will take Dr. Dodge’s spot as principal soon, shares, “Upwards of 90 percent of our kids will go to magnet or private schools upon graduation, thus ensuring their future.” That’s an impressive number.

But what’s the big deal about music in school? For starters, music keeps kids engaged and more likely to stay in school. They’re less likely to abuse substances over their lifetime, have higher self-esteem, and are better at coping with anxiety. Music also helps students with self-discipline, teamwork, and math skills, resulting in higher SAT scores. One report indicates students on average score 63 points higher on verbal and 44 points higher on math when music is a part of the curriculum. That’s just a few of the benefits (and why Vince wrote the check to support their music program).

Initially touched by the curriculum, devoted staff, and parental involvement, Vince shares, “Everyone in the world is tightening their belt, but now is the time to make room,” he says.

“We can’t just walk away. We’ve lit the fire in these children, and we can’t let it go out.” As for contributing directly to the music program, give Vince a cigar, a glass of Cointreau, play French icon Edith Piaf’s signature song “La Vie en Rose,” and sit back and watch. We all have a song.

As Mobile’s public-school superintendent for 10 years and a professor at USA, Dr. Dodge is well-known in local education circles. His connection to Prichard Preparatory was immediate, too. “A board member asked me to search for a new principal,” he shares. “Not sure of a candidate, I offered to fill in while I searched. Having her own children attend, Portia shares, “I started at the bottom.

I taught, I was in administration, and my children went here. I lived it. My oldest is going into the 10th grade now and doing extremely well in AP classes. When she started at Prichard Preparatory, she was behind, but they caught her up and she even became a class leader. She excelled because the teachers cared. At the end of the day, we all have heart and look at these kids like they’re our own,” she shares.

As we are coming up on our second month of quarantine and social distancing, many local businesses are adapting to the current way of life by offering at-home services. The History Museum of Mobile has created multiple ways to stay connected with our community during this strange situation.

ocated in downtown Mobile, the History Museum of Mobile has adapted well to the changes that COVID-19 has brought us. A staple of the community, their team has worked tirelessly to implement different projects allowing the Mobile area to stay connected during the shutdown. With all of the chaos happening right now, it’s been imperative that businesses like the History Museum work to bring education, entertainment, and familiarity to everyone stuck at home.

Stephanie Evans, marketing and events manager at the museum, says several projects have been implemented since social distancing took root. “When it became apparent that we were going to need to close for public safety, we immediately started brainstorming ways we could still have the public involved in the museum without actually visiting,” Stephanie shares. “We started by filming a guided tour of our Ancient Rome exhibit so people who had not yet had the opportunity to see it could do so from the comfort of their own homes. It was very well received, so we decided to film a guided tour of Colonial Fort Conde, and our ‘History at Home’ program was born,” she says, adding that the Ancient Rome exhibit has been given an extension, with plans to have it remain at least four weeks after reopening. “I’ve since worked with our Education

Department to create content parents or teachers can use at home with their own children or students while distance learning is in place. From Alabama sports history and World War II, to Native Americans and highlights on certain objects within our collection, we’ve created some great content for adults and children to learn at home.”

Along with History at Home, the museum has also started a program called “Your Story is History.” The project allows anyone who would like to participate to submit journal entries, social media posts, emails, texts, and more to the museum for them to file and use to help tell the

story of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Among other sources, historians rely on journals and letters to reconstruct events, opinions, and cultures of the past,” Stephanie explains. “Right now we are living through a major historical event, and historians of the future will want to know what life was like for everyday Americans during this pandemic. We are inviting the public to participate in creating a historical record for future generations,” she shares. “We believe whoever you are, wherever you are, your experience matters! These submissions will become part of the History Museum’s permanent collection.”

The museum continues to stay active on social media platforms to try and stay connected with their normal visitors and fans, patiently waiting with the rest of the world for things to slowly begin to go back to normal.

“We miss our visitors,” Stephanie says. “The History Museum of Mobile is typically a vibrant, exciting place where people come not only to explore a bit of history, but also to learn something of themselves and their neighbors. Some of that can translate online, and we’re actively imagining what a ‘virtual’ museum could really look like if health requirements were to force a longer closure. But we can’t wait to welcome visitors back and start rebuilding that sense of community as soon as it is safe to do so,” Stephanie says. “Once we re-open, we know

things won’t go right back to ‘normal’ as it was before the closure, but we will keep up with the rigorous sanitizing of the building, bringing all staff on deck to help. We will also limit the number of people in each gallery to keep up with social distancing guidelines recommended by the CDC and state health officials. It’s also possible we’ll need to start doing ‘timed’ ticketing, especially on the first Sunday of each month, which is our free admission day,” Stephanie says. “We’re just taking everything week by week in accordance with state guidelines and will change our plans if necessary. We can’t wait to welcome the public back to the museum!”

Having built her love of the theater into a business, Erin Langley, Eastern Shore Repertory Theatre (ESRT) founder, never imagined the tight-knit community her students and families would develop — or how that would play out in a global pandemic. But here we are, and while the Coronavirus continues to take center stage, Erin marvels at how these by-product bonds are more crucial than ever.

pening my doors in 2012, I never could have predicted the unforeseen benefit of all our hard work. For me, the theater is that one special place where the world makes sense. It’s a safe place to question, create, and collaborate. It’s a place where learning style differences can be celebrated instead of seen as a source of frustration. I needed this type of outlet as a child, even though I didn’t know how to articulate it. It would have been a dream for me to

have been around so many creative, innovative, hard-working peers. It has been an amazing journey to find so many others looking for the same artistic safe space, and I’m so honored to provide that for them.

You see, the arts benefit the community in profound ways.

Below the shiny veneer of a flashy performance there are hundreds (if not thousands) of hours of problem-solving, teamwork, higher-level thinking, endurance, patience, and empathy. I’ve never felt the theater is about “being a star” or “creating stars.” I see it as a collaborative experience where a team of people create art together. Perhaps because I love the behind-the-scenes work, I sincerely feel every job is essential.

Because of that, I have no interest in celebrating only the lead performers.

I equally love celebrating the child saying their very first line on stage, the teenager running lighting cues for the first time, and watching a child or adult performer overcome personal hurdles. We’re not a group of individuals; we’re a united ensemble.

I think our camaraderie comes down to a code of conduct we all buy into. Above all else, we believe in kindness, fairness, empathy, and respect. That’s not just rhetoric.

When the cast knows I’ll treat them with those qualities and that they are expected to treat others similarly, it creates a beautiful ground for trust, creativity, and even the vulnerability needed to try new things. When everyone feels safe to be themselves there is an openness and willingness to become friends with others who seem completely different. I think

that feeling of safety has led to the special bonds at ESRT. Truly a refuge for many who feel like outsiders, we provide a home for creative thinkers who may not fit perfectly into a typical school setting.

We have a number of students labeled with learning disabilities who thrive in this environment. Surprisingly, it’s also a place for athletic kids to explore a different side of athletics.

I have really enjoyed seeing so many football and soccer players, cheerleaders, dancers, etc. get so much out of ESRT, too.

Further, having the privilege of working with these young children through their senior year in high school (and sometimes longer), I’ve witnessed the students and their families begin to celebrate the successes of the other children, and our bonds build. We all “grow up” together and become an extended family. For every huge moment on the big stage, there were thousands of smaller, uncelebrated ones, and experiencing this long journey together is what creates our strong connection.

With the huge time commitment it takes to execute professional productions like “The Lion King,” we were used to being together four to five days a week prior to the COVID-19 outbreak. It’s been challenging for all to lose the face-toface interaction. But, with our creativity we’ve started “virtual rehearsal pods” where we meet weekly by age group to work on challenges. Some are creating student-led choreography pieces for the fall and others are creating online performances. The bonds our students have developed over the years are so strong that seeing each other — even virtually — has become a lifeline for them.

Another positive is the Facebook Live Sunday evening concerts featuring performers of past productions.

They’ve delighted our community with virtual performances and it’s been a joy to watch them reprise their roles. Many are thriving at universities from Yale to Carnegie Mellon, and I couldn’t be prouder.

Our recent news of securing the Nicholson Center as a permanent home thanks to a partnership with the City of Daphne has sure boosted our spirits! We’ve been awarded a $100K grant from Impact 100 Baldwin County to completely renovate the space into a state-of-the-art performing arts space.

And, although we’ve performed for more than 65,000 audience members, been awarded national awards at the Junior Theater Festival in Sacramento and Atlanta, and showcased works to Disney Theatrical, Music Theatre International, and iTheatrics, setting the stage for these life-long bonds is perhaps my most successful role.

fter my hairdresser canceled what would become the last appointment before non-essential businesses closed, I panicked. The sheer terror of having my professional aesthetic team stripped from my “personal maintenance” routine was a lot (on top of all the other changes). Not only did I ask myself what life would look like during this pandemic, but what would I look like during this pandemic?

Picture that “Wizard of Oz” scene where Toto pulls back the drapes toward the end: “Pay no attention to that woman behind the curtain,” I was yelling in my mind. “Yes, that one with terrible nails, no lashes, and a wide stripe of gray hair!”

Not terribly vain, I still wanted to look like me even though life was starting to look very different.

I immediately turned to my close confidant, Uncle Google, and initiated what would become a barrage of small boxes arriving at my house filled with the promise of beautiful and youthful hair. I started with L’Oreal’s temporary Root Cover Up spray and was super pleased. I also used the Madison Reed Root Touch Up powder compact, and while good for my hair, I loved it for my brows. A friend suggested Unite’s BLONDA Toning Shampoo to stave off an actual dye job, and it’s a keeper. I also found “hair mascara.” With one click, I had the highly rated No Gray Quick Fix in my cart — a two-for you can use for hair and brows.

Finally, I had to go all-in and color my own hair. I opted for the dpHUE Root Touch Up Kit. Well-priced and highly rated, this will get me through. Elated with my success, I realized I hadn’t spent this much time alone in my bathroom since primping and preening in my 20s. Strangely, I didn’t feel guilty!

This seemingly superfluous need to look like myself in this upside-down world has taught me that self-care is more important than I ever gave it credit. I’ll leave you with this quote from Audrey Hepburn: “I believe in manicures. I believe in overdressing. I believe in primping at leisure and wearing lipstick.” I can’t wait to dress up again and see you on the Pink Carpet!

By now, we have all felt the effects — in one way or another — of the global pandemic economy. Whether having to shutter a business until things level off, having to work from home, being furloughed, wearing a mask when we go almost anywhere, or social distancing from family and friends, none of us have been immune to the disruptions.

In this new economy, Financial Advisor at Wells Fargo Advisors Kristin Phillips shares her summary of what she’s learned so far.

Dear Friends, Simply put, we’ve had to learn to live more simply. We’ve been forced to. In many ways, I believe this is so good. We’ve learned to appreciate what we have, that we can do without, and that there are things we can’t control. While some of us may have learned these lessons through various challenges in the past, the difference is we’re now learning this together.

History shows our economy will come back; it always has. But when?

This is something we can’t control. But, we know it will. In the meantime, let’s focus on things we do have some control over that I’ve seen work time and time again as a financial advisor: - If you haven’t, establish an emergency fund. In my experience, too many have painfully realized the importance of this in the last several weeks. While it seems “impossible” as we rebuild, for many, saving will only be harder as we get older, so sacrifice now.

- Keep sight of long-term goals. Don’t allow temporary economic uncertainty and market conditions to cause you to make emotional decisions that can permanently affect your long-term investment plan.

Keep calm and stay the course.

- Reevaluate spending habits. Again, we’re seeing we can live without. I have found two keys to successful investment and retirement planning and growing wealth are simply spending less, and saving more.

We’re learning how wonderfully possible this is. It doesn’t have to be temporary.

- Review your estate plan, will, and beneficiaries on life insurance policies and IRAs, 401k’s, pension plans, and retirement plans. While we can’t control when it’s “our time to go” or when this economy comes back, we do have control to plan how assets will be distributed when we are gone.

It is my hope the lessons we’ve learned through this crisis are ones we carry going forward. We have been forced to come together and see what truly matters, and for that we should all be grateful.
