Go Red for Women’s Heart Health On February 7th, the American Heart Association of Mobile held their annual “Go Red for Women” luncheon. Started with the goal to not only raise awareness for women’s heart health, this initiative also strives to help change and improve women’s lives on a global scale. The luncheon brought together a large group of women who vowed to make a commitment to the betterment not only of their own personal health, but also the well-being of those they love most. s Carnival season comes to a close, wedding season officially opens.

The ACCESS staff and I had more fun than we could’ve imagined participating in Fairhope’s Maids of Jubilee (MOJ) parade. As Grand Marshal, I knew I needed something, well, grand. Luckily, local fashion designer Destani Hoffman of DH Designs more than delivered on my larger than life ode to Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez.

A fashion girl dreams of being swallowed in layers of tulle ruffles, and that’s exactly what I did. Long enough to cover my convertible with more for that just-right drag, we can’t thank the MOJ’s enough for having us (and Destani as well)! Destani also makes wedding gowns, and as a hard-to-impress fashion snob, I’d say she’s got it. Check her out @dfhfashiondesigns. And with so many fabulous weddings to pour over, we think we’ve got just the right mix to inspire even those self-professed wedding snobs. Enjoy the pages and pages of thoughtfully curated special details, all with you and your family’s special day in mind. Nothing quite compares to a Southern wedding, as we really do it best. My top tip? When it’s time to head down the aisle, be sure to keep your bouquet lowered around the hip area. So many brides cover their dress by holding their flowers at the bust. It’s simply a “don’t.” Cheers to all the newlyweds who shared their journeys and the local businesses that made it possible.

than 20 years of spa experience to her new position at AMG. When patients visit the esthetics department, they will first consult with Kimberly and undergo a skin health evaluation. After the consult, Kimberly then develops a comprehensive and customized skincare treatment plan for her clients. The department offers a wide selection of treatments for their patients, including various facials targeting skin concerns like acne, dullness, dryness, and fine lines and wrinkles. Amber & Blake November 23, 2019

ovebirds Amber and Blake McMullen owe their paths crossing to Amber’s cousins Sandy and Radcliff Howard, who she says are more like brothers. “When Sandy and Radcliff had an apartment together, Blake and I both spent almost as much time over there as we did at our own homes,” Amber recalls. “Over the years we naturally grew closer to each other.”

However, it wasn’t “love at first sight,” as Amber and Blake remained close friends for three years before deciding to try their luck at dating. “I think everyone around us knew that we were supposed to be together except me,” Amber jokes. “I couldn’t imagine losing my best friend, and a relationship was either going to make us or break us. It was a scary choice to make, but it turned out to be the best decision of my life!”

The couple shared three and a half wonderful years together before Blake popped the question during a romantic Christmas getaway to New York City. Amber admits she saw the proposal coming, as her grandfather had told her Blake had recently asked for his blessing. She even knew Blake had already purchased the perfect ring, though this didn’t stop Blake from toying with her by waiting until the last night of their trip to get down on one knee. “By that point, I was starting to think that it wasn’t going to happen,” she says. “I was actually telling my friends that I didn’t think I’d be getting the ring on this trip,” she jokes.

After a day of sightseeing in lower Manhattan, perusing the Central Park Zoo, having macaroons at Ladurée, dinner at The Palm, and hitting The Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall, the two strolled hand-in-hand back to their hotel. The pair stopped to admire St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the beautiful tree at The Lotte New York Palace, at which time Blake finally asked Amber to be his wife. “It really was the best Christmas present I could’ve asked for,” Amber gushes.

Enjoying a year-long engagement, the couple had ample time to plan the wedding of their dreams and settled on an autumnal

theme featuring neutral colors with hints of pinks and purples.

Their venue selection came easy, as Amber’s family barn was an integral part of both of their lives. “Blake and I both enjoy spending our time there, and it was the perfect place to gather our friends and family,” Amber says. “The barn has been in my family for generations, starting with my grandfather [George Radcliff]. It was the perfect setting because it enabled me to easily visualize and execute my own personal touches into the venue. It was particularly special to me to have my horses overlooking the ceremony!”

And though one of the most important members of Amber’s family couldn’t be there (her father, who passed away when she was younger), Amber ensured he was there in spirit on her wedding day. “I planned to have a locket with a picture of him pinned to my bouquet for me to have as I walked down the aisle,” she explains. “The original locket that I ordered finally came in the week of my wedding, but it was too small to fit a picture. When my grandfather heard what the locket was for, he saved my day by getting me a beautiful gold estate locket from Zundel’s Jewelry. It turned out to be so much more special,” Amber reminisces.

For their honeymoon, the couple decided a trip to Banff, Canada, this past Valentine’s Day week would be the perfect place to celebrate their new life together. “We are fortunate enough to enjoy warmer weather practically year-round in southern Alabama, so we decided to take a more untraditional honeymoon,” Amber says. “We wanted to take a trip where we could experience cold weather and outdoor activities.” Of their future, Amber says she is looking forward to growing old with her best friend, adding, “Our first dance song was ‘Sixty-Four’ by the Beatles. It really does encompass what marriage is really about for us. We are so fortunate to have each other day to day for the rest of our lives.”

Virginia & Wade November 2, 2019

irginia Inge and Stephen Wade Gordon wed on November 2, 2019 with a reception following at Virginia’s childhood home in Midtown. The pair have known each other for well over 12 years now, having run in the same social circles since their time at the University of Alabama. It wasn’t until Virginia needed a date for The Thalians’ annual party in December of 2017 that the two finally got together. “After sending him a text, he was nice and agreed to go,” Virginia recalls. “We had to dress up for the party’s ‘Tacky Wedding’ theme ¬¬– ironic! We ended up having a blast together, and I was very impressed with his dance moves,” she jokes. “After Christmas, he asked me out for trivia night at Serda Brewing, and the rest is history.” The pair have been together a little over two years now.

When asked how she knew Wade was the one after such a short time as a couple, Virginia shares, “I’d never felt so much peace with a man before. Wade amazes me; he is gentle and strong at the same time.” Wade shares his own story of his “aha” moment: “I knew Virginia was the one when she braved the early morning hours and outdoors to go on a turkey hunt with me,” he jokes. “Although we were unsuccessful, it was great to see her excitement in trying out something that means so much to me.”

Virginia and Wade discussed a timeline of their engagement before the proposal knowing she would rather get excited about a “surprise”

than know nothing at all, which is why she expected the proposal when the couple traveled to her sister’s cabin at Forrest Home, Ala. Virginia says Wade got down on one knee at a romantic spot overlooking the lake before dinner, and of course, she said “yes” straight away!

Virginia’s favorite aspect of planning her whimsical Secret Gardenthemed wedding was writing personalized letters to each of her best friends asking them to be her bridesmaids, as well as creating a vision for the reception and the flowers at the church ceremony. The couple’s reception included a delicious almond-flavored cake with vanilla icing from The Pastry Shop, which overflowed with flowers that trickled around to the base and blended into the stairwell banister arrangements. Guests enjoyed coastal favorites such as shrimp and grits and pimento grilled cheeses.

Virginia’s favorite aspect of her wedding was the decision to have Cooper Trent (who happens to be Virginia’s friend since college) and his five-person ensemble play at the reception, and they “brought on the heat and our guests loved it,” she exclaims. Another special moment from the big day was when one bridesmaid, Christina Blackmon, sang the Aaronic Blessing (Numbers 6:22-27) during the ceremony. “My hope here was for everyone to feel a touch of God’s love, and we heard from several people of their special experience during this anointed moment,” shares Virginia.

arried in New Orleans on November 23, 2019, Edra Finley Harris and Michal Harris, Esq., first met during the Essence Festival in New Orleans.

Initially contending for the same bartender’s attention, each found themselves quickly distracted by the other, and swiftly struck up a conversation. “We went on our first date in September of 2016, and the rest is history,” Edra jokes.

Edra says the proposal came as a surprise during a dinner at Southern National while celebrating her birthday. “Michal told me that he was going to be unable to make it in town due to having a work commitment the next day,” she recalls. “To my surprise, he made it to dinner, and I was so excited that he made it in time to celebrate my birthday. He had several drinks throughout the course of the night and made several trips to the restroom. Come to find out he was very nervous and anxious,” Edra laughs. When it was time to sing “Happy Birthday,” the waiters brought out a cake with a Tiffany blue box. “He got down on one knee and I said ‘YES,’ of course,” she exclaims.

The newly engaged couple settled on New Orleans for their wedding day backdrop, as it was the city they had lived and met in. “We looked at several venues all around the city and decided on St. George’s Episcopal Church on St. Charles Avenue,” Edra says. “It was a very beautiful historic Episcopal church, which was very

important to me. Our reception venue had a very classic and timeless space that would accommodate our 300-plus guest list.”

Edra’s favorite part of planning their wedding was the creative process of choosing details such as the menu, the flowers, and the band. The menu featured Creole classics like gumbo and red beans and rice. The bride’s four-tier round cake featured flavors of yellow cake, red velvet, and wedding cake, and was decorated in live flowers provided by LUSH Home • Garden • Event. As for the groom’s cake, Michal loves Pollman’s Bake Shop so much that he entrusted them with his chocolate doberge cake in the shape of his home state: Texas. One special touch (and perhaps Edra’s favorite aspect of the day) was the live artist there to capture their first dance in a beautiful painting the couple knows they’ll treasure forever.

Michal’s most memorable part of the day was the first time he saw Edra walking down the aisle to take his hand.

Edra’s closest friends Toya Dartis, Antoinette Fobbs, Leslie Fayton, Rosemary Butler, and Secily Dumas made up her bridal party, with her sister, Erica Abrams, serving as her Matron of Honor. Edra’s favorite memory from her wedding? “Having my dad walk me down the aisle to give me away to the love of my life was a life-long dream come true,” she says.

After a honeymoon spent at The Grand Solmar in Cabo San Lucas, Edra says, “I look forward most to spending the rest of my life with my loving husband.”

Jack & Andy June 8, 2019

ndrew Brent Freeman and John Haywood McCown tied the knot on June 8, 2019 at a destination ceremony on beautiful Harbour Island in the Bahamas. The couple first met back in January of 2009, when they had a chance run-in at a dueling piano bar in downtown Mobile. “I was just leaving the bar, walking towards the door, when Jack walked in,” Andy remembers. “We passed each other, and both did a double take. While I was saying goodnight to friends, Jack and his friend ended up bailing out on the piano bar and getting in his car parallel parked across the street. As they were pulling down the street, I crossed over in front of them and gave Jack a little wave and nod while walking back towards my car. Taking the shiny bait I threw out there, Jack pulled over and parked again, sending his friend home in a taxi, as I stopped in at the next closest bar. A short while later, Jack appeared in the bar and ultimately came over like a true gentleman and introduced himself. And the rest, as they say, is history,” Andy shares.

Fast forward seven years to April 30, 2016, and it was time to pop the question. Knowing engagement rings weren’t their style, Andy decided a watch was the perfect accessory, as Jack had previously given a similar one to Andy for his birthday, gifted to him along with the most thoughtful note. With the perfect watch in tow, the two went on a beach weekend to Andy’s brother’s beach house.

After a day boating around, the two docked back at the house, and as Jack started walking down the boardwalk, Andy called him back.

“I hid around the corner, and as he got to the wharf wondering why I made him come back, there I was on one knee with the watch,” Andy fondly remembers. When asked how Jack knew Andy was “the one,” he replies, “It was pretty obvious that he was ‘the one’ from the beginning of our relationship. Andy has always been a rock through and through. Plus, my mom always said that nerds make the best husbands, and she was right,” Jack jokes.

For their ceremony, Andy and Jack knew they wanted to have a destination wedding so their friends and family could share in the experience of being on a trip together for such a special day in their lives. “We fell in love with The Dunmore at Harbour Island because of the friendly people there, and we were particularly impressed with the relaxed elegance and attention to detail shown there, so we knew this was the place,” Jack says. “The wedding aesthetic just naturally followed suit and mimicked the casual surroundings of The Dunmore,” he adds. Of the big day, Jack says, “It was all a little bit of a blur having the pressure of everyone staring at you, but I do remember looking at Andy and thinking how I was the luckiest man alive to be standing up there next to him, getting to marry him.”

The couple jetted out to Napa the following week, splitting time between Calistoga Ranch and Auberge du Soliel.

ouston natives Katherine Hall and Andrew Schleicher met while working together one fall in their hometown, but it wasn’t exactly “love at first sight,” Katherine recalls. The new bride admits her first impression of Andrew was far from romantic, as she initially thought he was extremely arrogant and had “the most ridiculous sense of humor.” It wasn’t until she gave him a ride home from work one day that she got to know the real Andrew, and the pair have been completely inseparable since. “I knew Andrew was the one from all of the trials and tribulations we have been through together,” Katherine says. “No matter what we went through, he was always there for me.

We both have leaned on one another and our faith. He is genuine and honest, and from Day One has been very open with how he felt about me,” she says.

The two had spoken about marriage several times since they first met in 2013, but it wasn’t until their five-year anniversary that Andrew decided to make it official. “Our schedules have always been so hectic, so he had a friend of his make the reservation at an Italian restaurant here in Austin so I wouldn’t have any idea (Italian food is my favorite),” Katherine tells. “We were up in this loft area of the restaurant, and our reservation was somewhat late, so there was a point when we were done with dinner and waiting on dessert that the place became completely empty.” It was then that Andrew dropped down to one knee. Katherine was shocked. “I sort of just sat there and looked at him,” she jokes. “It was definitely an out of body experience!”

Admitting that wedding planning was slightly overwhelming, Katherine says she left most of the details to her wedding planner, Nicole Hartman, and her mom, Susan. She knew for certain, however, that she and Andrew would choose the venue. “We wanted to get

married somewhere that had emotional symbolism to us,” Katherine says. “My entire life my family has gone to Gulf Shores during the summers, and when Andrew and I started dating I started to bring him there to my family’s place. For us it was special. When we went to look at possible places to get married on the beach, The Lodge made a huge impression, as the original location was one I had been to as a little girl before it was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan,” Katherine shares.

The beach made the perfect location for the couple’s intimate wedding, though in the days leading up to their nuptials it seemed the weather wouldn’t cooperate, raining non-stop. “I prayed to God that whatever His will was for us this day I was fine with it,” Katherine recalls. “It would be beautiful no matter what.” The day of, it rained all morning.

“I was getting ready with my ladies that morning looking out on the beach, and I was totally at peace with us having to possibly have an inside wedding,” Katherine says. “Then, just hours before we walked down the aisle, the sun started to come out, and we were able to have our ceremony on the covered patio instead of on the beach. But it was outside, so we were thrilled, and it made for the most stunning wedding photos. God delivered for us all the sunshine we needed,” she says. Andrew adds, “Watching Katherine walk down the aisle was very special. I am not a very emotional person in general, but when I saw her walking down the aisle it just felt right. I started tearing up, and she looked absolutely beautiful,” Andrew says.

After the wedding, the couple set off to spend two weeks in Bali. When asked what they envision for their future, the pair say they are looking forward to “growing together physically, spiritually, and mentally; constantly challenging each other for more; continuing to push toward our dreams; travelling the world; and then starting a family.”

rom the day they met, Taylor Naman Wilkins and Michael Wilkins knew they were meant to be together.

The pair first crossed paths during the summer of 2014 while training together as sales representatives for Cutco Knives. “I just simply knew Michael was the one for me,” Taylor shares. “He is such an amazing man and he has the biggest heart. He motivates me to be the best version of myself each day.” Michael adds, “She keeps me grounded. She is an excellent person to share everything with – especially faith – and I know that she is absolutely the best person to be the mother to our future children.”

An avid gun fan, Michael incorporated his passion for firearms into his proposal. “One day he asked me to go down to his bay house with him to sight in his rifle because he was going hunting with my dad that weekend,” Taylor explains. “So, I went with him down the Bay to ‘sight in his gun.’ As we were walking on his wharf out to the water, he said he had bought me my very own gun,” she says, but admits she was less than thrilled with the news. “He sat the gun cases that he was carrying down and told me to open the gun case that had my ‘new gun’ in it. As I opened the case, Michael got down on one knee and asked me to marry him… there was no gun in the case, but a ring! It was a complete surprise, and very special because we both love being down by the Bay,” she shares.

The pair say they thoroughly enjoyed planning their “Southern Coastal” wedding, citing cake tasting as one of their favorite “tasks.”

After a ceremony at St. Joseph Chapel at Spring Hill College, the party moved to Cotton Hall for the reception. And when it came to their reception food, the Namans did not disappoint. Owned by Taylor’s father Thomas, Naman’s Catering put together a wide variety of delicious foods featuring a Lebanese station in honor of Taylor’s grandmother, Cecilia, complete with fried kibbeh balls, rolled grape leaves, meat pies, and spanakopita. Other stations included a grill station with oysters and brown sugar Conecuh sausage; a carving station with beef tenderloin and firecracker brussel sprouts; and a decadent charcuterie table – and that just scratched the surface.

Late-night snacks of mini grilled cheeses and grilled jalapeño duck bites were also served. We are officially drooling!

Taylor confirms everything about their big day was memorable, but states that wearing a bracelet gifted to her by her new in-laws as a “welcome to the family” present and carrying her grandmother’s handkerchief in her bouquet added the perfect sentimental touches.

The couple started off their married life at Atlantis at Paradise Island in the Bahamas for the perfect honeymoon before returning to the States for the start of their forever. So, what’s Taylor’s main focus now? “Getting to spend the rest of my life with the man I love and starting a family of our own one day,” she says.

octors Bradee Aiyer Sittason and Payton Bryant Sittason met during the first few days of dental school, during which time Bradee recalls Payton asking to borrow a pen. Apparently, Bradee was hooked upon looking into those big green eyes of his, and the rest, as they say, is history. It didn’t take long for Bradee to realize that Payton was “the one,” especially after attending their first “Mandiball” (a.k.a. dental school prom) together. “I knew I had a huge crush on him, but that night I could sense the feeling was mutual,” Bradee gushes. “We had the best time!” The pair were eventually wed on August 24, 2019, after nearly five years of coupled bliss.

Bradee recalls the evening that Payton proposed as “a frigid, rainy December night in Birmingham,” – something which was very rare.

“Payton had planned us a dinner that night, and as I entered the car, he told me, ‘Hey, I think you have something on your face.’ I was thinking it had to be an ice cube because I was freezing,” Bradee jokes. “As I opened the sun visor, rose petals fell all over my lap. I looked up and there on the sun visor was a note that read, ‘BRADEE SARAH AIYER, WILL YOU MARRY ME?’ with the ring pinned right next to the note. It was one of the most special, perfect moments of my life.”

Bradee recalls wedding dress shopping as a fairytale experience. With 10 of her closest friends and family in tow, Bradee attended a private

dress fitting at The Something Blue Shoppe in Hartselle, Ala. “I think I surprised everyone with my decisiveness because the third dress was the one, so there was zero stress involved. Overall, I am a pretty decisive person, which made this day a beautiful experience, and I fell in love with my dress all over again on our wedding day. It was exactly what I dreamed of.”

For the big day, Bradee and Payton wanted everything white and gold – a perfect complement to their venue, The Steeple. “We loved the beautiful and unique stained-glass windows,” Bradee says. “My husband’s family is Methodist, so we loved the fact that The Steeple was originally a Methodist church, but what sold us on it was the huge stage. Payton and I were both most excited for the band and for our guests to have the best time dancing to Motown,” she says.

Perhaps what made their day most special was that Bradee’s family flew in all the way from India to celebrate the couple’s big day. “Their traditional Indian saris and wedding attire were such beautiful and unique sights to see,” she says.

After being led down the street by the Excelsior Band in a traditional Second Line, the newlyweds jetted off for six days in New Zealand, followed by five days on a private beach in Nadi, Fiji. With so many recent adventures, what’s next for the Sittasons? Simply put: “Spending quality time and making sweet memories with my best friend,” Bradee shares.

radley Carrington and Josh Russell’s relationship has been a stronghold for the past six years despite the odds, with Josh going away to college just seven months into the start of their relationship. Bradley met Josh during her junior year at St. Paul’s while he attended UMS-Wright for his senior year. “Both schools are so similar that friend groups always intertwine, and that is exactly how Josh and I met,” Bradley shares. “It only took us seeing each other for the first time when we were in a social setting with mutual friends for the early stages of our relationship to begin,” Bradley reminisces. “We had approximately seven months before Josh left for college at the University of Alabama (basically the worst timing ever). Everyone warned me about dating a freshman guy at college, but we survived that year of Josh being away and me finishing out my senior year with zero hiccups along the way,” she says.

Josh adds that he knew Bradley was “the one” during their year apart, as she never left his side, no matter what. “Although people gave her every reason to believe she couldn’t date me through that year, she put her trust in me and supported me my whole first year of college,” Josh says. “That year really solidified our relationship and the lengths we were willing to go to make ‘us’ work.”

Fast-forward to the end of his collegiate run, when Josh knew it was time to ask his high school sweetheart to spend forever with him.

The pair were enjoying a beach weekend with Bradley’s parents when Josh took the opportunity to ask her father for permission to wed Bradley. Her father, of course, gave Josh his blessing, but nearly spoiled the proposal (which was planned for a few weeks later) when he laid eyes on Bradley next. “I guess my dad panicked when he saw me and just hugged me and goes, ‘Congratulations,’” Bradley jokes,

admitting in the moment she had no idea what he was talking about.

Three weeks later, on July 1st, the two set off for their families’ annual Russell and Carrington summer trip to Orange Beach. The two families boarded Bradley’s parents’ 53 Hatteras Yacht, “The Queenie,” headed for Fort McRee, and upon arriving, the couple was sent off to walk their dog, Briggs, alone along the beach. “I turned around to Josh on his knee asking me to marry him,” Bradley gushes.

“I was in complete shock because I really did not see it happening in this moment.” Obviously, she said “Yes,” and the couple returned to their families to celebrate. “If you know us, you know how perfect and meaningful this proposal was, because we were in our absolute favorite place with our families,” Bradley shares.

The pair decided St. James Episcopal Church in Fairhope was the perfect spot to confirm their love with friends and family. Their reception was held at Bradley’s grandmother Priscilla Wilson’s bay house, something she said was most meaningful for their wedding.

“Having our reception there was the perfect setting because it attested to Josh and I’s relationship in every way possible,” Bradley says. “We are both extremely family-oriented, so to be able to host all of our friends and loved ones at my grandparents’ home was more than anything I could have ever asked for,” she says. Bradley’s father catered the reception, serving dishes like shrimp with smoked gouda grits, fried seafood, grilled crab cakes, and even a late-night snack of fried waffle triangles with powdered sugar. The groom’s favorite moment? Seeing his bride walk down the aisle. “The second I saw her coming down the aisle, all my nerves went away,” he says.

“We have been each other’s safe place for so long, and all I needed that day was to see her.”

iva Las Vegas! Well-known Bay Area native Noell Carter Broughton was married to the love of his life, Elizabeth Langford, at the Graceland Wedding Chapel by none other than the King himself, Elvis Presley.

The pair first met when their two best friends, Mark and Angela Strickland, introduced them to each other, thinking they would be the perfect match. Turns out they were right, and Elizabeth and Noell tied the knot after dating for seven blissful years.

The proposal was far from traditional, as it was ruined not once, but twice! “Once when the jeweler mailed the ring appraisal to the house, and the other when Jewelers Insurance mailed the policy to the house,” Elizabeth shares. Deciding to take matters into her own hands, Elizabeth went ahead and popped the question to Noell.

“He was totally surprised, and it was perfect,” she says.

Fast forward to last August, when the couple traveled to Las Vegas to watch Noell’s cousin perform in a show.

They decided to stop and tour the Graceland Wedding Chapel (the world’s first Elvis-themed wedding chapel) and decided it was the perfect spot. “We got to pick out three Elvis songs for the ceremony, so we chose ‘Viva Las Vegas’ (to come down the aisle to), ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’ (mid-ceremony,) and we walked out to ‘A Little Less Conversation.’ That was so much fun,” Elizabeth gushes.

Though they were married alone (something which was very special to Elizabeth), the bride still managed to bring a bit of family to Vegas in the form of her grandmother’s pearl necklace given to her by her mother for the big day.

“I was glad to have a little piece of her with me that day,” Elizabeth says.

The newlyweds stayed in Vegas for their honeymoon and were surprised with Willie Nelson tickets as a wedding gift. Now back in the Bay Area, Elizabeth and Noell are enjoying marital bliss, and agree that getting to wake up next to their best friend every day forever is the best part.

ed in January of this year, Lauren and Tyler Luckie first met back in 2016 when Tyler responded to a Snapchat of Lauren’s originally meant for his co-worker. “He snatched the phone and responded with a photo of himself with words that read, ‘He is busy,’” Lauren reminisces. Enamored, Lauren decided to look him up on Facebook later that night and sent him a message that would be the start of a wonderful journey.

Come to find out, Tyler knew Lauren was the one from the beginning. “Sometimes you just know,” he shares. “From that first day I knew she would be my wife.” He made it official on Christmas Eve in 2018, proposing to Lauren in front of her family. “It was a total surprise! I couldn’t stop shaking, and my eyes became very large with excitement,” Lauren happily recalls.

Lauren and Tyler stumbled upon their dream wedding venue by happenstance. The pair had contemplated a museum wedding, so they decided to check out the Mobile Museum of Art. “It was modern, contemporary, and quite a unique building. It was perfect because no one else we knew had their wedding there so it felt like our place,” shares Lauren. Their theme of ivory and gold

with hints of green were incorporated perfectly in each detail of their big day. Their cake (baked and designed by Tara Woolsey of Couture Cakes in Daphne) featured four tiers of vanilla cake with almond buttercream. It had gold foil cascading down one side with minimal flowers atop a spiked gold mirror – something that had never been done in Tara’s cake shop before. One special touch from their wedding day was Lauren’s “something blue”: a piece of blue fabric from Lauren’s grandmother sewn into her garter.

Lauren’s sister, Rachael Volk Ulmer, served as Lauren’s matron of honor; her best friend, Savannah Starling, was her maid of honor; and her sister-in-law, Karen Koppersmith, was also by her side. On Tyler’s side stood his older brother and best man, Forrest Koppersmith; Lauren’s brother, Ryan Volk; and Tyler’s younger brother, Trevor Luckie. “There were three flower girls: my nieces Rosalyn, Grace, and Maggie,” Lauren shares.

The newlyweds will honeymoon in the Bahamas later this year and look forward to the peace and quiet of married life, putting their new home together, and being able to do things on their own time.

igh school sweethearts Liza Schwieterman and Jeffrey Boudreau were married on April 6, 2019, at The Steeple in Downtown Mobile. Having first met at the Alabama School of Math and Science, Jeffrey asked Liza to prom, which blossomed into a grand romance. So how did Liza know Jeffrey was “the one” at such a young age? “He is the one who I felt at home with,” she says. “My favorite part of every day was seeing him when I walked through the door after work and giving him a hug, and I knew I wanted to do that forever.” Jeffrey adds, “She is my favorite person to do things with.

Whether it’s hiking, playing a game together, or just ordering a pizza and watching a movie, she is always my first choice to spend time with. I never need a break from her,” he says.

The idea of marriage came naturally for the pair, as they had been together nine years by the time of their wedding. Of the proposal, Liza shares it was an intimate and simple decision made between the couple, a testament to how ready they were to be engaged. “We had picked out the ring together and already talked to our family, even looking at houses,” Liza shares. “At that point we were like ‘You know, we could plan a whole thing, or do you just want to agree to do this?’ So he got down on one knee in our living room with our dog, and it was perfect.”

The theme of Liza and Jeffrey’s wedding was “Southern Chic,” as they wanted to showcase what Mobile has to offer for their many

Northern guests. “I got to discover a lot about Mobile that had changed since my husband and I had left,” Liza recalls, particularly noting the food. “Gulf Coast cuisine is second to none,” she says.

With the vision for a traditional ceremony incorporating modern elements, the couple settled on The Steeple for their ceremony, as it is both beautifully done and historically significant. For their menu, Southern staples such as shrimp and grits, oysters, fried green tomatoes, and beignets topped the list of crowd favorites among guests.

Liza says despite the numerous special moments throughout the day, the detail she cherished most was writing their own vows. Though she shares it was hard reading them aloud to everyone, she notes that “it was totally worth it.” Jeffrey adds, “She looked beautiful walking down the aisle, and in that moment I knew we were doing everything right.” Also, getting ready with her mother the day of the wedding is a memory both Liza and her mom will cherish for a lifetime.

The couple honeymooned at the Hotel Excellence in Cancun, Mexico, which Liza jokes “was totally relaxing after the stress that is wedding planning.” When asked what the newlyweds are looking forward to most about married life, the pair agrees that it’s just about the day-to-day enjoyment of it all. “Morning cups of coffee, grocery runs, and walks through the park are all that much sweeter when you’re with someone you love,” Liza says.

orin Cutrell wed her soulmate Chase in May of 2019, and says she sought a natural look for her wedding flowers, incorporating lots of greenery and white flowers while also adding blush accents. Though she had a rough idea going into her first meeting with the team at LUSH Home•Garden•Event, she says Tim Burt really helped bring her vision to life. “Tim was able to narrow in and go through each of the photos I brought as an example,” Lorin says. “He was able to explain each photograph and point out each flower while informing me of their price point.

This was extremely helpful and informative,” she says. From the word “go,” Lorin put her full trust in Tim – a fact he did not take lightly. And Lorin says Tim ensured she received the level of care and attention he seeks to provide each of his brides. “I always looked forward to our meetings and phone calls,” Lorin recalls. “Tim treated me like I was his only customer. Throughout our whole experience, Tim became a part of my family. He was always interested in more than just what he was responsible for and added to the love that my husband and I received during our wedding experience. I can say that Tim became more than just our florist; he is now a friend.”

nother bride, Baylee Jackson, went to LUSH with the vision of a light, airy, and pastel flower palette. Having dreamed of her wedding since she was a little girl, Baylee had a strong idea of what she wanted for her wedding but enlisted the expertise of Tim Burt and the team at LUSH to narrow down the specific type of flowers to bring her vision to life. “There is no doubt that our wedding flowers were one of the most important pieces to our wedding vision,” Baylee says. “We had a very spacious venue, so I relied heavily on the floral design to draw the eyes of our guests and bring all of the varying design elements together. Tim and his team went above and beyond to make sure each and every flower was perfectly placed,” she shares. And like Lorin, Baylee is so grateful to Tim and his team for their hard work and dedication both before and during the wedding. “From all the meetings, phone calls, and preparations that took place, they were there at any moment, day or night,” Baylee says.

ew to the Bay area is Bloom Flower Artistry, and sister-friends Christy Calhoun and Heather Kinder are thrilled to bring their talents to the Mobile and Baldwin County wedding scene. Both women love the process of designing their clients’ dream arrangements and believe that as important as the final product is, the “getting there” is equally invaluable.

The recent wedding of Breanna and Eric McDaniel was a particularly special event for Christy and Heather to work on, as the bride’s mother is a close friend of Christy’s mother. “Breanna knew what she wanted to see on her day,” Christy shares. “She gave us her color story of French blue, shades of pinks, and pops of green. She gave us a few descriptive words, sent over inspiration photos, and we started brainstorming what she wanted to see splashed with those colors in her venues. She loved everything we presented in the proposal and we were able to bring her vision to life,” Christy says. Breanna’s arrangements included roses, hydrangeas, peonies, and more. Sourced from trusted local wholesalers, each flower helped bring the bride’s vision to life and create the wedding of her dreams. “Our wedding wouldn’t have been the gorgeous success it was without Christy and Bloom,” Breanna says.

“Knowing the flowers were one less thing to stress about just made the whole day that much more enjoyable,” Breanna adds, insisting that working with Bloom was one of the most effortless parts of planning her wedding. “After talking with Christy, I saw how knowledgeable and caring she was,” Breanna says. “I knew I could trust her to make our vision come to life.”

The love for their work and their clients is evident in the care the ladies at Bloom show to each individual bride. “We want to ensure our brides feel loved and heard as they go through this sometimes hectic, stressful season of life,” Christy says. “We want them to know we’ve been there before; we have their back and we’re going to have a lot of fun guiding them through this process.” Christy says her hope is that clients leave Bloom feeling more confident than when they arrived, and further comforted knowing they have made a couple new friends in the process. “We truly believe that our clients are placed in front of us for a purpose much bigger than ourselves and we treat each one as we would want to be treated: with kindness and respect,” Christy says.

ne of the biggest trends the boutique-style ellenJAY Bakery has seen in the past year is the focus on smaller cakes paired with a dessert table. Offering a plethora of dessert options including themed sugar cookies, buttercream sammies, and lemon or vanilla teacake cookies, no one can top an ellenJAY wedding dessert table. And when it comes to their cakes, ellenJAY offers a wide variety of delicious flavors to choose from such as cookie dough, red velvet, Italian cream, cookies n’ cream, and their best-selling flavor among brides: sweet potato.

One recent bride, Ellie Metz, opted for ellenJAY’s treats for her November 1st Day of the Dead/Carnival-themed wedding. “What was cool about Ellie’s wedding was that it was non-traditional and pretty cutting-edge,” say Lauren Kapeluck and Jennifer Conrad, the “L” and “J” behind ellenJAY. “She chose a two-tiered wedding cake in soft gray with gold leaf details.

She also added pops of color with petite cakes and cupcakes.” Ellie decided on sweet potato with cinnamon cream cheese filling and vanilla American buttercream icing for her main cake while selecting three other flavors (confetti, cotton candy, and ellenJAY birthday) to be included in a special cake walk for their guests. “From the

moment I walked into ellenJAY for my tasting, I immediately felt at home with these women,” Ellie says. “Lauren, Jennifer, and their fantastic team understood my vision and were committed to keeping my wedding the slightly offbeat celebration it was. Trish and Andy chose a central two-tiered vanilla and lemon curd-filled cake surrounded by an opulent table of sweets including hand-decorated sugar cookies shaped like wedding dresses, wedding cakes, and bouquets; cake pops in both vanilla and chocolate; mini peanut butter sammies with peanut butter cream cheese; red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese icing; and lemon and vanilla teacakes. “EllenJAY epitomized exactly what we wanted for our wedding,” Trish shares.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE TOP TRENDS YOU HAVE NOTICED IN WEDDING INVITATIONS OVER THE PAST YEAR?

Soirée Signatures is a full-service graphic design studio, meaning we design and produce all of the work we create for our clients. We also have several in-stock items and invitation templates available, so not everything has to be custom.

Many of our brides create spectacular wedding day paper suites that not only include the wedding invite but also can include other embellishments like hand-drawn illustrations, crests, monograms, envelope liners, edge painting, reception cards, reply cards — the list goes on and on, and it is only limited by a bride’s imagination. Not only can we create all of the items sent to guests inviting them to the big day, but for the event we create a plethora of day-of printables and party goods. From welcome boxes for out-of-town guests, to menu cards, place cards, cups, napkins, and stir sticks, again, anything is possible. We have even created custom logos for couples and had them translated to bar signage, floor graphics, event flags, and favors. We have worked with so many brides who have let us stretch our creative talent to the limit!

Remember: Wedding invitations need to be mailed six to eight weeks in advance of the wedding date.

Typically, production time is around one to two months, so we recommend getting the process started at least five months before the wedding.

We love the incorporation of custom artwork like watercolors, original sketches, and hand-written calligraphy as inspiration for the overall aesthetic of our clients’ pieces. Hand-made papers have also seen a great resurgence and we love the high-end look they lend to events. We have recently been making invitations on acrylic, metal, and leather, so people are definitely into doing something unique that many of their guests have never seen. In short, if you can dream it, we can create it.

YOU’VE SET THE DATE, SO NOW WHAT?

The Save the Date has really replaced the engagement announcement and starts the build up to your big day. It is important not only so your guests can plan, but also because it is the first official communication of your exciting news with friends and family. Creating all of your printed pieces to match your overall wedding aesthetic is a showstopper, so we recommend setting an appointment with our paper stylists and design team to get a jump on how you want all of it to look.

Obviously, we can use that same look on all the fun parties and events, from bridal showers and luncheons to rehearsal dinners and bachelorette parties, but another truly fun way to express individuality as a bride is designing the bridal paper trousseau. Informal note cards, formal thank you cards, bridal calling cards, bridal gift tags, and then moving on to create the same for your married name, is one of our favorite components of the overall wedding planning.

IF SOMEONE ISN’T SURE ABOUT WHAT THEY WANT, HOW DO YOU STEER THEM IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION?

We understand that for people who don’t feel like they’re very creative, it’s hard for them to articulate their vision. However, lots of people are very visual and “know it when they see it.” Our consultations are super helpful, as looking at individual invitations and pinpointing what they like and don’t like helps us get into the client’s head so we can help them come up with something perfect. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST COMMON MISTAKES YOU SEE WHEN IT COMES TO WEDDING INVITATIONS AND HOW DO YOU SUGGEST RECTIFYING THEM?

The BIGGEST mistake people make is not ordering enough invitations or waiting until the last minute to start the process. Ordering too few invitations can result in costly reprints that end up costing almost the same as the original order! Waiting can lead to unnecessary and unavoidable rush production and shipping fees.

ANY PARTING ADVICE FOR BRIDES?

Don’t skimp on invitations. Many people incorrectly believe the invitation will only be tossed, so it is not an integral part of their event. We can tell you from experience that weddings with thoughtful, beautiful invitations are more memorable because guests are excited to attend. The invitation creates a build-up for the event. When guests see a spectacular invite, they know they are in for the same when they attend your wedding!

ince opening in the spring of 2019, Crown Hall has become a sought-after venue for all major events — especially weddings.

From the rehearsal dinner all the way to the ceremony and reception, its clean, modern atmosphere is a sophisticated location you can reimagine to fit your exact wedding vision. Having spared no expense, Sarah’s venue will have you thinking “Mad Men” meets divine chandeliers and an exquisite floor fit for royalty. With sky-high ceilings, the design is so on-point it could be in any major city (and it is certainly welcome in ours).

Just a short shuttle ride from multiple hotels and Airbnb’s and boasting an on-site space for you and your party to get ready, this venue is brimming with convenience. Building on her own experience, Sarah (who also owns Bay Gourmet Catering) has perfectly executed her initial vision, having created a sleek, clean slate within her venue that she knew from Day One future brides would fall in love with — a vision she saw come to life after hosting her first wedding in June of 2019.

“We believe our place is the best venue because it's one big party room where everyone can see you cut your cake, do your toast, and have your first dances,” Sarah says. “To see my dream become a reality and watch the first group come in and have such a grand time was pure job satisfaction. I love watching everyone dance on the beautiful floors and watching the house lights go down when the band is really ready to party with the guests… that's always a moment,” she adds.

Boasting more than 6,400 square feet of usable space, The Crooked Crown, Crown on Broad, and Crown Hall make up the three semi-separate sections of the property that allow ample elbow room for you and all your guests, and with all areas completely covered, there is no need for tents or rain plans — always a safe bet when it comes to Mobile’s unpredictable weather. As for parking, they’ve got that covered, too. “We built this place with events in mind, so the entire place is Cat 5 wired with an in-house speaker system, and the

lighting is amazing, especially after the sun goes down,” Sarah says, adding that the oversized door allows for a grand arrival and a fun exit at the end of the night.

Brides can also check another item off their “To-Do” lists when booking Crown Hall, as catering is part of the deal. As mentioned earlier, Sarah is also the owner of Bay Gourmet Catering, one of the most well-known caterers in the area for more than 19 years. Now with Crown Hall in the mix, all brides will work with Sarah and her team to finalize the food and bar details. Though the venue offers a menu, Sarah notes that it is not set in stone, and insists “We can meet any request.” All food is prepared in the on-site kitchen, so it is guaranteed to be fresh for your wedding. “We have been catering for almost 20 years and started when people didn't have coordinators,” Sarah says. “We did it all and still help brides navigate the whole thing. Having the event space, food, bar, some tables and chairs makes this a one-stop-shop with the exception of the flowers, cake, and photographer.” So, if you’re in the market for veils and gowns, maybe consider a Crown while you’re at it.

So, the celebration went on, and we even rented additional transportation to get them to the church on time,” Tricia says.

“Who better to learn from and walk through life with than your best friend? I feel completely blessed to walk along beside her in the business,” Cathy says. “I love owning a bridal shop and having the ability to make things happen for my customers.”

The White Room offers an exquisite collection of couture bridal dresses, debutante gowns, evening gowns, and mother-of-the-bride gowns crafted by some of the world’s top designers like Anna Maier, Anne Barge, Carolina Herrera, Catherine Regehr, Frascara, Mikaella, Paloma Blanca, and many more. Cathy and Carolyn take great pride in the gowns they display in their store, as their customers’ happiness is extremely important to them. They travel to the New York Bridal Market twice a year to see the latest collections from their favorite designers, sometimes discovering a new one. “It’s a big decision on what to order for our store,” the two admit. “Usually, we will come back to the shop and make a collage of images covering the entire wall, and that’s where the fun really begins! Choosing dresses for the next season is just one of the most exciting parts of our job.”

Carolyn, Cathy, and the rest of The White Room team know the importance of wedding dress shopping, and want their brides to know when they walk into their shop they will receive warm, personal attention to make them feel extra special during their visits. With more than 16 years of experience (and countless happy brides), Cathy and Carolyn have an arsenal of advice for their brides when it comes to shopping. “First, it is best to shop with only a small group who know you the best, because when you have a large group it’s really easy to let other people sway you and your opinion,” Cathy says. “Also, we recommend brides only shop two shops in a day with lunch in between. Trying on wedding dresses can be fun and exhausting all at the same time. We find that if a bride has already been to two stores and is walking into their third that they are most likely already confused.” And lastly, though you might think you know the exact dress for you, they suggest coming in open-minded, as more often than not, brides are shocked to learn that what they like is completely different than their original visions (and that is perfectly okay). Settle on the dress that makes you the happiest, and makes you feel absolutely breathtaking.

And remember, it is very rare for a sample dress to fit the bride perfectly, which is why it is suggested brides order their gowns eight to 10 months out from their wedding dates in order to ensure there is enough time for their dresses to come in and alterations to be made. “Keep in mind, a lot of gowns take five to six months just to ship,” Cathy says.

offer in-house alterations for all of their brides and clients. Owner Carolyn serves as their expert seamstress and has a lifetime of experience to go along with it. Offering in-house alterations is very special to The White Room, as many shops these days tend to outsource their alterations (and definitely don’t have their owner behind the sewing machine)!

Francia’s Formal Affair has served the Bay Area for decades, though the family behind the business has been providing folks across the country with their formal wear needs since the 1940s. With deep family roots stemming from the bridal industry in Chicago, owner Jimmy Francia is proud to foster his lineage’s love of all things formal. // By Jessica Goolsby

he Francias have been in the wedding business for three generations, starting with owner Jimmy Francia’s grandmother up North. “It started with my grandmother, Emilie Francia, who was a dress designer and owned a bridal shop in Chicago starting in 1945 that is now owned by her daughter who is in her 80s,” Jimmy tells. “My dad has two twin sisters, and they took over the bridal side of the business after my grandmother passed away at 57 from cancer, but my father decided to get into the tuxedo business. He bought a Gingiss Formal Wear franchise in 1970, and we moved to St. Pete, Fla., when I was 10 years old.” The family relocated to Mobile in 1976 and opened up shop in the Springdale Mall. “I helped out in the store all through high school and college, and after graduation from the University of South Alabama (where I played baseball for the Jaguars) I started working there full-time. I am one of five kids, and all of us have worked in the business at different times,” he says.

In 1990, Jimmy’s father decided to retire, and Jimmy bought the business, opting out of the franchise to instead turn it into something of his own.

Thus, Francia’s Formal Affair was born. And with 50 combined years in the business of men’s formal wear between Jimmy and his father, it’s safe to say he knows a thing or two about helping folks look sharp. “We offer everything that a man would need for any formal occasion and we have everything in stock so we can have it ready on the same day for those last-minute events.” A tuxedo for a prom? Tails for a ball? A suit for a wedding (and all the accessories required, including formal shirts, jewelry, belts, and shoes)? Francia’s has got you covered. “We also do custom shirts that you can order in a wide range of colors and fabrics,” Jimmy adds, citing an additional perk completely unique to Francia’s Formal Affair: a valet service. “We will deliver the suits to the wedding venue, fit the guys, and make any necessary alterations, and then pick the suits up on Sunday at the hotel,” Jimmy says.

As for wedding trends, Jimmy jokes that it’s like everything else: everything comes back in style eventually. “We are seeing a lot of non-traditional colors in tuxedoes that were popular in the 70s and 80s like burgundy, hunter green, cornflower, and cobalt blue instead of the traditional navy, gray, and black,” Jimmy says. “Mobile is a very 74 ACCESS Magazine / March 2020

traditional city, so black tuxedoes for an evening wedding will always be popular. They are making the coats slimmer fitting and cut shorter than they have in the past. We are also seeing a lot of wedding parties going more casual and wearing suits instead of tuxedoes.”

Regardless of the trends, Jimmy advises grooms to just make sure they (and their wedding parties) are comfortable and are able to try everything on first to see how it is going to fit. “So much attention is put on the bride, but this is the groom’s day too, and he needs to feel special,” Jimmy says. “As far as fit goes, just because it says it is a slim-fit and you’re a bigger size, don’t think you can’t wear it. I have fitted men of all sizes in slim-fit suits and they fit all body types.” When it comes to a timeline, Jimmy says colors should be decided on and the venue and time picked out prior to choosing one’s wedding attire. “Four to six months before the wedding is the average timeframe to pick out men’s formal attire,” Jimmy says. “We prefer our wedding couples make an appointment to decide on their wedding attire.

After registering, we would like to have everyone fitted by at least a month before the wedding.” Francia’s requires a final fitting on rentals to ensure a

proper fit, most often done at pick up the day before the wedding.

Jimmy says Francia’s also offers its wedding customers the option of buying or renting the suits for each member of their wedding party. “This has been extremely popular because of the flexibility and affordability,” Jimmy notes. Their busiest times of the year? Wedding season (October through May), Mardi Gras, and prom. But no matter the occasion, it’s Jimmy’s love for the look and his dedication to his clients that truly shines. “My favorite part of the formal attire industry is working with my customers,” Jimmy says. “I love helping to make their special day a success. But what many may not know is that in order to achieve the healthy glow they desire, treatments should start months (or even a year) in advance. The results, however, are totally worth the wait.

One such treatment, Laser Photo Rejuvenation, is often performed by Dr. James Koehler and his laser specialists at Eastern Shore Cosmetic Surgery. N E st In business, she’s renovated, flipped, and rented houses for years. Then, she lost her last home to a fire. With vision and know-how, Point Clear’s Ginny Stimpson met her match. Here, she shares on creating a home out of chaos.

A

s wife to John and mom to three teenage boys (Benjamin, Sheppard, and John Jr.), Ginny is busy, but remains the ultimate optimist with enviable patience – especially in the aftermath of a massive renovation.

“The house was uninhabitable when we purchased it,” Ginny recalls. “There had been flooding, and the floors from the master through the living room were ruined.

Therefore, there was a lot of mildew and actual vines growing in the house! We’ve been restoring this home since June and we are finally settling in and are all enjoying just being present,” she shares.

The almost 7,000 square foot home is nestled along the golf course and offers a layout complete with floor-toceiling windows throughout that will remind any home enthusiast of a mid-century modern gem. And when it comes to design, Ginny says her inspiration comes from the creative people she meets and the places she visits. “I do an enormous amount of research on the internet at all times of the day and night, and I’m probably a bit more maximalist then this house calls for,” Ginny jokes. “I have to keep pulling back. I want it to be intuitive and flow with ease, but thoughtfulness.

I absolutely love to travel, so I definitely think my vibe is eclectic. I do like a soft feminine touch, but only in subdued ways like in the curve of a chair or the color of the marble I use. Otherwise, I’m pretty bold in my decorating and not afraid to go out on a limb in certain areas of my house,” she says.

Listing the sleek kitchen as one of her favorite spaces, she shares, “The marble I used in the kitchen and bar area is Rosa Aurora. It’s absolutely gorgeous and I fell in love with it about six or seven years ago. I’m so

happy to be using it finally. It is honed which most people would be leery of, but I love the look; it’s softer somehow and more feminine. I believe the etching of things that happens to marble is just part of the life and story of the living surface.”

Enlisting experts, Ginny hired the professional team at Stone Interiors to help her achieve her desired aesthetic. “Knowing Ginny’s style and knowing the ‘all white look’ is being replaced by a more modern look of contrasting colors and tones, we were thrilled with this project,” says Stone Interiors co-owner Angela Weil (who runs the business with her husband, Dustin).

“We used the Rosa Aurora marble from Portugal for the kitchen island, countertops, and wet bar; Cristallo (a Brazilian quartzite) in the half bath; Namib Fantasy (an African marble) throughout the master bathroom; and the fireplace is Nero Marquina and Black Diamond,” Angela details.

“It was a dream to work with Stone Interiors,” Ginny says.

“I think I have half their staff on speed dial. Dustin and I collaborate together, and he implements my crazy floating marble ideas from shelving to seating,” Ginny adds. And given the fact that Angela and Dustin come from a family business that specializes in high-end and commercial stone construction, they were more than qualified in executing and implementing the creativity Ginny’s project required and able to secure the best room-defining slabs.

Then there’s the master closets. Bringing in the closet masters from the locally owned Closet Factory, Ginny shares, “Well, first of all, Jerry and Lisa Taylor (owners) are both a dream to work with. “Ginny is a great client and we love her,” Jerry says. “She knows exactly what she wants but is open to new ideas. We custom-built her master closets and kitchen cabinetry. With a long to-do list and just home from Scotland after touring St. Andrews University (where her son has recently been accepted), Ginny adds, “Chaos has been a large part of our lives, and while the house is not finished by a long shot, I am flattered by the attention it has received thus far. It’s truly an ‘entertaining’ home and I hope to steward it towards that direction in the future. Ginny says it also helps that her children love the house as well.

“It’s their first time to live in a neighborhood and the streets are great for longboarding, the pool is great for swimming, and the proximity to playing tennis makes it an ideal location for them. Also, the wildlife (some good and some not so good – think squirrels in the attic), is fantastic!”

In the midst of renovating and running kids to activities, she is also an active member of the Eastern Shore Repertory Theater (ERST). “I love to help out on ESRT spring shows designing sponsor tents or just being an assistant to the director for a night,” Ginny says.

As for her personally, “I love to learn about Interior Design and Architecture,” she says. “I recently started my own company so I can put my creativity to good use (if possible)! In five short years my husband and I will be empty nesters, so I’m trying to slowly but surely get back into business. John and I have renovated, flipped, and rented houses for years. Therefore, it’s very natural for me to want to go ‘legit.’ My children have always been my main priority, so it’s definitely time to prepare for the future without them at home,” she concludes.

But since this home is designed for entertaining, our guess is this won’t be an empty nest for long.

a thousand memories It goes without saying, having a photographer there on your wedding day to capture every moment – no matter how large or small – is essential. The images captured on that special day will serve as a testament to the significance of your union and a perpetual reminder of the day you celebrated your love surrounded by friends and family. Enter Cindy O’Brien McCrory of Blue Room Photography, who stands poised to provide every couple the most stunning images possible, forever encapsulating their most treasured memories.

W

hen asked how she got her start in the photography business, Cindy O’Brien McCrory jokes about how she was always “that friend” and then “that mom” with a camera. Realizing her talent (and after a few big life events), Cindy decided to pursue photography full-time. “In 2007, I started a new job at a non-profit, and photography was a huge part of it,” Cindy shares. “I enrolled in the Certificate of Photography curriculum at South Alabama with a goal to improve my digital photography skills and to understand the digital camera better. I fell in love with the focus on wedding and portrait photography. The business course gave me confidence to try to turn my hobby into a business, so I did!” Cindy began working from home in 2010 and leased her current studio in June of 2013.

These days, Blue Room Photography has taken the wedding world by storm, offering services which not only include the standard photography, but also “video snippets,” in which Cindy shoots small videos of the day and interchanges them with still images to make a three to four-minute video for the couple. “This satisfies many brides enough that they don’t feel like they have to also get a dedicated videographer,” Cindy explains. But before the big day arrives, countless hours of planning go into ensuring every detail the bride wants is captured.

“By the time the week of the wedding arrives, I have had several discussions with the bride, the mom, and the planner, and we have crafted a timeline plus a shot list,” Cindy details. “I text all of that info. to the bride, the groom, the parents, the

best man, and the maid/matron of honor,” Cindy says, adding: “Brides, do tell me about any specific shots you want! Even though my style leans toward candid, in-the-moment photography, I still require a shot list to be sure I get all the family members and the smaller family groupings. No one wants to be accidentally left out!”

Seasoned pros, Cindy and her team of wedding photographers are fully prepared for any situation that may arise. With our area’s weather, rain and clouds may pop up on your special day, but rest assured your photos will not be affected, as Cindy can adjust her lighting to match any weather. “I spend a lot of time, energy, and money ahead of your wedding date,” Cindy shares. “I make sure all of my equipment is in top shape so it will work from start to end. I have enough battery power to shoot for three days without having to recharge, and I carry three cameras and have a small backup in the car should everything fail. I am not comfortable without backups to my backups,” Cindy assures us.

With something as fun and ever-changing as wedding photography, Cindy has countless great memories from her clients’ big days, but one stands out in particular: a father-daughter dance Cindy shot in 2018 that unexpectedly went viral! “It was on ABC Nightly News, our local news, was broadcast over international channels, and was on the web for months,” Cindy gushes. “The most fun part was Ellen DeGeneres invited the bride and groom to be on her show! They did a wonderful interview, and Ellen presented the bride and groom a check for $25,000 to cover moving expenses which they had incurred when they moved to be close to her father

in his last few months of life.”

With stories like the one above, it is no wonder Cindy’s clients become more like family, and continue to stay in touch years after the photos are delivered. “I have been shooting weddings long enough now that I am taking photos of the couples’ new babies, then their seconds, and even their thirds,” Cindy shares.

Photography may be Cindy’s passion, but her first love is her family. Married to Marcus McCrory who she describes as a “kind, gentle giant,” the two have three grown children, and three grandchildren together. She loves living on the Bay as she enjoys our tricky weather, and because it is the perfect place for her grandchildren to visit.

The dress, the venue, the flowers, the reception; it all takes time, organization, and most importantly, patience. These traits will also come in quite handy for the next step: the marriage. Though this is a blissful time for engaged and newlywed couples, the stresses that come with planning a wedding and the changes that happen during the beginning of marriage are sometimes hard to ignore, and definitely shouldn’t be!

For every bride-to-be, there are common stressors that Lisa always likes to address, such as going over budget, navigating in-law conflict, and overall stress management throughout the process. Lisa preaches on the importance of practicing healthy communication before the marriage begins. Having an open flow of communication from the start sets you and your partner up for success.

“I find that many of the issues brought to me in marital therapy arise from the lack of communication about these topics before they marry,” Lisa says. “Communication is key to any healthy relationship for the simple fact that we cannot read minds. Communication is the only way to transfer information, ideas, wants, and desires. Without communication, vulnerability and emotional connection are impossible.”

Once you make it past the wedding, Lisa urges couples not to forget these skills in their first years of marriage. As Lisa notes, you are not a mind reader, and neither is your partner.

“The first year of marriage is said to be the most difficult, due to major life adjustments and unexpected issues couples may face,” Lisa explains.

“Often times, couples bring expectations into the marriage that derived from their family of origin.

When these expectations are not communicated, they are unmet, and therefore disappointments, resentments, and conflicts arise.” Lisa says.

According to Lisa, another common stress factor on a marriage can be conflict between families.

Creating boundaries for both you and your partner’s families is an important step to take early on in your relationship and marriage. Having both parties aware of the existence of any tension allows boundaries to easily be established and followed from the

beginning of a marriage.

So, brides-to-be and newlyweds, take a moment to analyze your relationship and begin to think of ways you could better your communication with your partner during these stressful times. If you are worried that you and your partner may be lacking in some areas, do not be disappointed. Lisa believes that any couple beginning their journey to marriage should consider talking to a therapist to adequately prepare themselves for what is to come.

“I may be biased, but I believe that as soon as a couple begins to have a conversation about marriage, they should consider entering therapy,” Lisa says. “It is never too soon to begin working on developing the healthiest relationship possible.

There are many different pre-marital counseling curricula available. The important thing is to find a counselor and pre-marital technique that suits each individual couple, yet challenges the couple to address the hard things.”

Lisa has one final note for her engaged and newlywed couples: “I would advise any newly engaged couple to truly take the time and put forth the effort into preparing for their marriage – even more than what they spend planning their wedding,” Lisa says. “A healthy marriage is so much more important than a pretty ceremony.”

nown for its larger-than-life landscapes and breathtaking scenery, this year’s Festival of Flowers theme does not disappoint, as the event stands poised to transport visitors to “Zen Gardens.”

Take a stroll through the traditional Japanese Torii gates and discover Mobile’s own Mount Fuji and find tranquility in the Japanese gardens, bamboo forests, and ponds enhanced by floating flowers.

Representing unspoiled nature, these unique gardens offer various focal points amid floral geisha and warrior masks sculpted by some of the area’s most talented designers.

With more than 300,000 square feet of exhibits, the festival is not only the largest outdoor flower and garden event in the Southeast, but also offers seminars, shopping, and more. “It’s so much fun to give something so beautiful to our community,” says Festival Landscape Chair Brenda Huddle. “It brings people on the Providence Hospital campus to help with its message. It comes from a need to make the world a little better – to create beauty for the world. It’s what we lovingly do,” she says.

Interestingly, Mobile is known as a plant nursery capital, meaning most of the plants featured in the festival are grown locally. Think Bellingrath Gardens and Home, Loxley, and Semmes. With countless participating vendors selling plants, jewelry, home décor, and much more, you will find yourself enchanted by everything the festival has to offer under tent and sky. And there is plenty for the children to experience as well, making it a great place for inspiration while benefitting an even greater cause.

by Judy Garland’s angelic voice (as most little girls are). Withstanding the test of time, she remains a household name not only for her immense talents, but also for her struggles with addiction.

Judy’s daughters, Liza Minelli and Lorna Luft, have also struggled with addiction throughout their lives, but have each broken the cycle and found recovery.

Lorna is now using her platform to speak on her past struggle with addiction to help other people move forward in their lives as well.

This year’s beloved 24th annual luncheon hosted by the Drug Education Council will be an event you won’t want to miss. Lorna Luft is slated as the featured guest and will speak not only on her issues with addiction, but also on growing up as the daughter of a true legend. Prissy Wilson, the luncheon founder, was beyond excited to bring Lorna to Mobile for this already sought-after event.

“Having seen the wonderful movie about Judy Garland’s incredible voice, addiction to substances from childhood, and her deep love for her children despite her struggles, I began reading about her and her family,” Prissy explains. “When I began doing research on her daughter, Lorna Luft (who is also an incredibly talented singer and actress), I saw that she spoke openly about her addiction and recovery.

I knew she would be a big draw and tell an incredible story, but most importantly, I knew she’d be a stellar example of this disease, which is often hereditary,” Prissy shares.

a great pleasure after Renée Zellweger’s Oscar win for her role as Judy Garland in “Judy.” “We are thrilled that Judy Garland’s daughter is this year’s guest speaker,” says Virginia Guy, executive director for the luncheon. “She grew up among Hollywood’s elite and she also experienced firsthand what it’s like to grow up in a home of active addiction, and then to develop her own addiction. She speaks about this disease from a family dynamics perspective,” Virginia says.

The DEC’s annual luncheon is a cherished event here on the Bay because of the wonderful work that comes from the DEC and the difference they make in our community, providing the Bay Area with programs focused on intervention as well as prevention. The DEC hopes to provide a warm and nurturing environment where victims of addiction can find help and heal. They also work alongside families who have lost family members to the opioid epidemic, helping them to find healing

and turn their loss into an opportunity within the community.

“The Drug Education Council saves lives,” Virginia says. “We help families find appropriate treatment services for their loved ones; we advocate to reduce the stigma and eliminate barriers that prevent people from getting the help they need; we provide support for those in recovery and their families; and of course, our overarching goal is to prevent the disease of addiction and the devastating consequences that go along with it,” she adds. “These families inspire me every day to continue to carry the powerful message of prevention and recovery.”

Not only does the luncheon give guests the opportunity to hear Lorna speak about overcoming the disease that plagues many people in this very community, but it is an extraordinary opportunity to give back.

irst opened in 2003, Victory Health Partners was born of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Lightfoot’s vision to minister to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the medically underserved after noting the deficits while serving on medical mission trips abroad.

Throughout their travels, God placed in their hearts a desire to serve within their own community, and upon their return, the pair began meeting with key leaders in Mobile’s medical community to determine the gaps facing area residents. At the time, Dr. Lightfoot was a general surgeon in private practice with his brother, Dr. William Lightfoot, at Providence Hospital. After 13 years of working in the operating room, Dr. Lightfoot left his practice to lead Victory full-time. Initially serving as a primary care clinic, Victory saw 12 patients on its opening day in 2003 but has since grown to serve more than 24,000 patients and has expanded to be a multispecialty medical practice.

According to The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, there are still approximately 100,000 adults in Mobile and Baldwin County who currently fall within the gaps of healthcare. “The gaps in our health insurance system affect people of all ages, ethnicities, and income levels,” Dr. Lightfoot explains. “Access barriers facing uninsured people mean they are less likely to receive preventative care and are more likely to be hospitalized for conditions that could have been treated in a cost-effective manner.”

Even under the Affordable Care Act, approximately 45 percent of uninsured adults cite the high cost of insurance as the main reason they lack coverage.

Patients span many different industries, from hospitality, service, and construction, to small business, the arts, and many who have part-time employment. Victory provides high-quality healthcare to all patients who qualify, regardless of race, religion, or background.

The outcome of the continuum of care provided at Victory Health Partners is that patients can regain control of their healthcare with dignity. By providing patients with their prescriptions at little or no cost and educating them on the importance of taking their medications as prescribed, they take their prescriptions on a consistent basis and reduce the chance of relapse. Through specialty clinics and the relationships Victory has with more than 150 specialists in Mobile, its patients’ full medical needs are met. By focusing on their patients’ physical, emotional and spiritual needs, Victory’s physicians are afforded the opportunity to holistically care for patients far beyond a mere diagnosis.

“One of the most rewarding aspects of working for Victory is hearing the stories of the lives that have been forever impacted from the hope and care they received at the clinic,” says Director Kim Garrett.

“Our patients no longer wonder if they can afford their groceries, utilities, and medication. They have access to compassionate and comprehensive healthcare that will restore their health, dignity, and hope for the future.”

By offering patients an extensive range of services like primary care, laboratory visits, diagnostic tests, medication assistance, preventative care, and counseling (at no cost), Victory provides the access to care that saves and restores its patients’ lives.

Roughly 50 patients are seen each day in the clinic, with approximately 65 to 75 new patients qualifying each month. Victory serves the Gulf Coast with patients from 25 counties in Alabama, 11 in Mississippi, and eight in Florida annually.

In addition to primary medical care, Victory offers a medication dispensary; a wound care clinic; MRIs; minor surgeries; diabetes education; sleep apnea care; and dental, smoking cessation, optometry, neurology, pulmonary, counseling, urology, and women’s wellness services. Victory’s network of more than 150 partner specialists range from

cardiology and chiropractic services to orthopedic, oncology, podiatry, dermatology, and more, all of whom will examine and treat in their own offices for an affordable fee. In 2019, the estimated value of the specialty care provided to patients was over $20 million, with more than $39.4 million worth of free medication provided to patients by Victory through its Medication Assistance Program.

Now in its 18th year of service, Victory remains a Christ-centered, community collaboration of partners and donors who are committed to the healthcare and wellness of our vulnerable neighbors. Infirmary Health has provided the 11,000 square foot building for Victory since the clinic opened for a lease of $1 per year – a contribution totaling in the millions. Approximately 70 volunteers work in the clinic weekly assisting in various departments, and annually, volunteers give approximately 60,000 hours of service. Purposefully placed in their name, “Partners” is there because of the vast network of volunteers from medical providers and the community at large who equip Victory to provide a sustainable, full continuum of care for its patients.

“Our success can be found in the number of lives encountered, medications dispensed, and the broad scope of medical care provided to our uninsured neighbors,” Dr. Lightfoot says. “When we, together, actively pursue eternal significance by placing others before ourselves, Kingdom work is accomplished.”

Constructed between 1895 and 1896 by members of the venerable congregation of the Saint Francis Street Methodist Church, The Steeple is the second house of worship to occupy the hallowed ground upon which it stands. An earlier Greek Revival Church (one not dissimilar to nearby Christ Church and Government Street Presbyterian Church) stood on the location prior to construction of the present structure. The new building stood in stark contrast to those more sober protestant temples. The finest essay to this day in the British Queen Anne variant of the Aesthetics Movement, the Steeple broadcasts the prominence of the church, its congregants, and Mobile.

The Aesthetics Movement is not appreciated as it might be in Mobile. The City is home to some of the United States’ finest examples of that most eclectic of artistic expressions. Drawing from a diverse array of sources, the Aesthetics Movement (or, as it is often more popularly known, the “High Victorian”) is a visual feast of the first order. As with so many artistic trends, the Aesthetics Movement was a British transplant to American soil. The Queen Anne was its most pervasive architectural form. Red brick and white train hinted at the architecture of Queen Anne’s reign, but these two defining motifs of the British Queen Anne were joined by an array of elements and constructions sourced from around the world.

One enters The Steeple by way of large double doors opening from the newly laid pavers surfacing the sidewalk off of Joachim Street. A staircase like no other along the Gulf envelops and enthralls visitors. It is as if church has become theatre. We are talking the grand stair of the Paris Opera plopped in Lower Dauphin! Beyond the main entrance hall are rooms that once served as offices and Sunday School rooms. A publike bar, spacious bathrooms, and trendy parlors occupy these recently rehabilitated ground floor spaces.

The Steeples’ most glorious space is the old sanctuary. It is approached by way of the main staircase after ascending several flights of steps punctuated by seemingly strategically spaced landings. The filtered, refracted, and colored light of the stainedglass windows delights your eyes. Stained-glass windows are found throughout the building, though nothing prepares one for those of the old sanctuary. Angels of every description are rendered and gaze upon you with sweet, joyous, and (at times) playful expressions. This main event space is arguably the grandest interior volume in Mobile.

The Steeple served as a church until the 1990s. Recently restored by Clif and Ginna Inge, the building is a fixture within downtown Mobile’s ongoing Renaissance. Many couples have started their shared lives together within its sturdy walls, and like those unions, the place and the spaces within it are inspirational!

WOMEN & WEALTH “Big Conversations” Before The “Big Day” There’s been talk about the dress. The venue. The food.

The music. The honeymoon.

But, have they talked about the marriage? More specifically, have they talked about what their finances will be, after they unite? In my experience, many couples avoid the “money talk” because it may be difficult.

However, not having the talk can cause more problems down the road. Studies have shown that money is a frequent topic of arguments in many marriages. Discussing expectations about money matters before the “I do’s” helps both partners enter the marriage with eyes wide open, and a firm investment plan in place. Here are some key areas to address before the wedding bells ring:

1.) To Combine, or Not To Combine: Many couples, especially those who are older, already have their own checking, savings, and brokerage accounts. The question is whether to combine everything in joint accounts, or keep them separate. Keeping separate accounts lets each partner feel independent; on the other hand, joining accounts can help unite the couple’s goals.

This decision is a personal one, and is unique to each couple.

One solution to consider would be keeping separate accounts, and having a joint account(s) that both spouses contribute to for household expenses. Regardless of what they decide, the issue should be discussed.

2.) Financial Goals: It’s important for couples to discuss financial goals and priorities. How much will they spend on housing, cars, dining out, travel, etc.? What are the goals for saving?

What will be set aside for emergencies? One certainty: Living costs money (more if planning to have children!). Being on the same page with regard to spending/saving habits and expectation of lifestyle can be key to minimizing those “money rifts” that may come along later. They should discuss short-term and long-term financial goals, including retirement. They’re in this together, after all.

3.) Budgeting: Some say the key to financial success is to spend what is left after saving, rather than saving what’s left after spending. Many couples find themselves in the latter position because they lack a budget to control their expenses, which can leave them with nothing to save. It is usually better for a couple to sit down and list monthly income and expenses. That way, they can determine how they will control expenses so they can set money aside to reach their goals.

4.) Debt: That four-letter word! Debt can be a touchy subject, but one that should be addressed nonetheless. It’s important to know what, if any, debts each spouse is bringing into the marriage. If there is debt, just as with banking accounts, couples should decide whether to combine or keep separate (since debt affects credit rating). Additionally, discussing each person’s perspective with regard to debt is important. While some people are raised to never borrow money, others are taught it is acceptable to take out a loan—even for a luxury item. Agreeing on this issue can be challenging, but attempting to reach a compromise that both can live with is ideal.

5.) Estate Planning: No matter how young or old, addressing estate planning is vital. However, due to the nature of the conversation, many couples avoid this topic—sometimes until it’s too late. When two people decide to take responsibility for each other, it’s appropriate to talk about how they want to provide for an orderly transfer of assets. Life insurance and the financial considerations around losing a spouse should be included in the discussion. It’s important to pay particular attention to beneficiary designations on life insurance policies, 401(k) plans, and IRA’s, since these designations will supersede instructions for distributing assets in a will or trust.

6.) Seeking Advice: Navigating life’s critical financial decisions can be challenging and stressful. Education funding…estate planning…insurance…retirement planning…it can all seem overwhelming. But couples don’t have to go the path alone.

Whether to hire a professional to assist in developing a strategic holistic plan, and to help enable them to reach their goals, is another meaningful discussion for couples to have. Ponder this… just about every winning team has a great coach!
