“WOO HOO!”

Auctioneer, oilman, catfish farmer, beef cattle raiser, entrepreneur and Yale native, Darrell Mueggenborg and his wife Jennifer opened Mugsy’s Grubhouse in July of 2017.

Their reputation for offering tender steaks, amazing comfort food and a hometown-friendly atmosphere spread like an Oklahoma grassfire.

Everything in the Grubhouse is a piece of Darrell and his family’s past. Even the lumber on the walls has special meaning. In the main dining room, the waitress station is roofed with the tin from the old milk barn and you can still see the red paint on the recycled wood that serves as the wall covering.

Just who is Darrell Mueggenborg?

“They were wheat farmers, cattle farmers and pig farmers,” said Darrell.

In 1943, Tony Mueggenborg married Ruth Laughlin in Oklahoma City, and eventually they bought 80 acres of land along Old Highway 51, seven miles west of Yale.

Tony and Ruth had five children: John, Lewis, Mildred, Virginia and finally Darrell.

Darrell grew up a farm kid — helping his dad on the farm. Dad was a wheat, cotton and peanut farmer and raised cattle. He also grew alfalfa and prairie hay along with the milk cows.

He went fishing when he had free time, but as he grew older, that time went to activities like the Future Farmers of America.

Darrell is a strong supporter of this organization that influences young people and prepares them for the practicalities of living in rural Oklahoma.

In high school, Darrell served as Yale’s FFA Chapter President for two years and he took his show steers to show at the Payne County fair every year.

Hanging in chronological order in the hallway that runs down the center of Mugsy’s Grubhouse are dozens and dozens of photos of 4H and FFA kids with their prize-winning pigs, steers, goats and dairy heifers — most accompanied by their premium buyers.

Darrell is pictured in the earliest photo with a show steer, taken during the Payne County premium sale in the late 1970s.

He appears in most of the photos on that wall — some as a teenager with a prize-winning show animal, then transitioning to being the man standing with the kids as a premium buyer.

“We kept all these pictures in a box for a long time,” said Darrell. “We had no idea they would have such an important impact at the Grubhouse.”

“FFA taught me public speaking. FFA taught me to shake hands. Everybody who was in FFA knows how to shake hands,” said Darrell. “That’s the stuff it did — forced the shy right out of me. I’m a product of FFA, that’s the bottom line.”

It was FFA influence that sent Darrell down a path that would define his life for the next 35 years.

“Ferlan K. Dean was my FFA instructor in high school,” said Darrell. “He’s still here — lives right down the road. Ferlan K. Dean told me that I talked fast, so I needed to be an auctioneer.”

That got Darrell’s wheels turning.

An entrepreneur from an early age, Darrell was selling fireworks from a stand at the edge of Yale. Young Jennifer Brown was in town visiting her grandmother, Treva Courtney, the Yale Postmaster.

“In July of 1980 Jennifer came up to my firecracker stand,” said Darrell.

In April of 1981, Jennifer and Darrell got married. In 1982, Dustin was born.

Derrick came in 1985.

Jennifer’s grandmother was the only postmaster Yale had from 1953 to 1979. There’s a photo of Treva in Mugsy’s main dining room and as chance would have it, Treva’s husband, Glen, was an auctioneer, too.

A year later, Darrell packed off to Kansas City to attend Missouri Auctioneer School.

When he finished in Missouri, he went to work for Tom Berry and Gene Boyce Auctions in Stillwater.

For the next decade, fast talkingDarrell sold items at auction for Tom and Gene.

In 1997, Gene had a heart attack.

“He told me, ‘Darrell, you’ve got to keep this thing going,’” said Darrell.

Mueggenborg Auctions was born.

“We did 25 years of public auctions, specializing in selling real and personal property at public auction,” said Darrell.

“We run an 80-mile radius around Payne County.”

Darrell and Jennifer bought a large building on Yale’s west end — the former home of OTASCO, Oklahoma Tire and Supply Company, owned by Jim and Sue Rhoades.

According to Darrell, Sue sold everything from appliances to tires up front and Jim worked in the back in the mechanic shop.

“See that dark stain on the floor?”

Darrell asked, pointing at a dark portion of the concrete in the restaurant’s banquet hall. “That’s a 35-year-old oil stain. We scraped on that for days getting off the crusted up oil. It’s clean.

On the east side of the restaurant is an overflow dining area that Darrell calls the loafing shed.

“You know, that roof you stick off the side of the barn that makes the shade where the cows loaf? That’s the loafing shed,” Darrell said.

The back room at Mugsy’s no longer has the garage doors from its OTASCO days, but you can see their outline in the windows. The former mechanic shop is now used as seating overflow on busy nights, and can be reserved for parties and large gatherings.

“We had the Oklahoma Boer Goat Association meeting here just last week,” said Darrell. “It was their state meeting. We set them up a real nice buffet.”

An aroma of wood smoke and slow-cooking meat permeates the Grubhouse, sneaking in from the Smoke Shack, where the framework of Mugsy’s incredible menu is forged. Pitmaster Josh Endicott is here keeping a careful eye on time and temperature.

Darrell and select members of his culinary team went to Unadilla, Georgia, to learn how to cook meat from Myron Mixon, one of the country’s most decorated and respected pitmasters.

“He’s a four-time world champion smoker,” said Darrell. “He wears the rings. We watched his shows on TV. We went to his school in March of 2017, five months before we opened the restaurant.

We wanted to do it right. We ate real good for three days. He sent us home with all his secrets and recipes.”

The walls of the shed are made from the horse stalls that came from the Oklahoma State Fair horse barn Darrell bought at their surplus sale. Inside the loafing shed, the tables and chairs are uniquely Mugsy’s.

“Out here, we’ve got our Jack Daniels kegs for tables,” said Darrell. “I had a vision. I needed wagon wheels. So I bought an old wagon that had four wheels and I put holes in the tops of the barrels and put those wheels on them and covered them with glass and now I’ve got tables. I knew exactly what I was going to do.”

It seems like Darrell has always known exactly what he was going to do, even if he wasn’t quite aware of what that might be.

Today, he wants to see Mugsy’s Grubhouse expand to other cities.

Darrell’s energy and spark permeate the atmosphere at the Grubhouse. Returning customers wait in anticipation of his expected, “Woo Hoo!” It’s his trademark — literally.

He said when the restaurant had first opened, he was asking people where they were from and said, “Woo Hoo!” after they answered.

to keep doing — that it was part of Mugsy’s charm.

Darrell has printed license plates that read “Woo Hoo!” and “Got Grub?”

Darrell is a marketing juggernaut.

He gives these plates away by the hundreds and they are seen on the fronts of pickups and cars everywhere in the Cimarron Valley.

He prints his slogans on t-shirts and hoodies and sells them at the Grubhouse.

Darrell recently trademarked these phrases in anticipation of his plans to offer Mugsy’s Grubhouse franchises.

He knows that good food is important, but it’s not nearly as important as the people who come through his doors every day.

“When I was an auctioneer, I was a people person — 35 years in the business. It wasn’t an auction business, it was a people business,” he said. “Now I own a restaurant but I’m not in the food business, I’m in the people business.”

“I’d put my servers and my steaks up against any restaurant in Tulsa or Oklahoma City,” he said. “I ask people everyday, ‘What brought you to Yale, Oklahoma?’ and they say, ‘Mugsy’s good food and atmosphere.’”

If you’re lucky enough to get the tour of Mugsy’s Grubhouse, you’ll realize this place is not about Darrell Mueggenborg. It’s about the people who touched his life and made him the man he is today — a people person who’s in the people business.”

Celebrating 40 Years of Excellence in Service In 1979, John Fechner and his family moved to Cushing from Great Bend, KS, to establish a distribution center for Trico Industries. In 1982, John decided to go into business for himself.

He opened Fechner Pump & Supply in Cleveland, OK, as a down-hole pump repair service.

Not long after, the business started to grow, and John began selling oilfield parts and supplies.

In 1986, John purchased a property in Cushing, and opened his 2nd store. That was also the year oil fell to $10.00/barrel. But John’s commitment to excellence in customer service and his trust in the Lord, helped carry Fechner Pump through those difficult years.

In 2006, John purchased 5 acres with a 5,000 sq ft warehouse, in Alva, OK. That building has been expanded to 7,500 sq ft, and has had new offices added to the structure. In 2014, the Alva location built a much-needed 15,000 sq ft warehouse to accommodate the growing needs of the industry in NW Oklahoma. Today, Fechner Pump has over 50,000 sq ft of warehouse space which houses an extensive inventory.

Today, Fechner Pump & Supply employs 20 industry professionals, and is looking to grow that number soon. As we celebrate 40 years of excellence in service, we look forward to many more years of growth and being a part of this community.

Big Changes still to come to CPS

BY DEANNA MADDOX The Cushing Public School district has been moving forward with various ongoing construction projects thanks to bonds and government funds showing district members commitment to provide the highest quality of education to their students.

A few of the renovations made over the past year includes repairs to intercom systems, removal of lockers, a new storefront in the main building and additional office space in the Cushing High School office along with several other improvements across the middle school, lower elementary, and sports fields.

The CHS project was the highest costing project with a total

estimated cost of renovations reported at $2,866,354.43.

The O’Dell Field Project which consisted of a Jumbo Tron repair and sound system replacement was the lowest at a total cost of $31,718.

“It has been trial by fire learning the construction side of everything,” said Melissa Amon, the new superintendent of CPS. Amon took over the position of superintendent following Koln Knight’s retirement. Since being in the position she has learned about the policy and procedure that goes into district improvement. She said she was lucky to have Knight as a mentor during her transition to the position.

“I made a couple of phone calls to him (Knight) . . . so I was prepped up and ready before we hit the ground running.”

Despite the challenges of the year, Amon has done precisely that — hit the ground running. Through safe return plans, spikes and new variants of COVID-19, and uncertainty on a number of levels she has put the safety and well being of students and staff ahead of everything else.

Amon said her biggest concern was the financial responsibility that she would have to maintain.

“It’s one thing knowing that side of things and actually being the one responsible for a whole district. I just wanted to continue to make sure to make decisions to better the district,” she said.

Amon made the decision to utilize COVID-19 related funds the federal government approved and put them towards projects that were already in the works in order to save facility funds for other projects.

The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) III funds were approved to be used to finish the remodel of the high school bathrooms in 2021. “$380,000 of our ESSER III money went towards the bathroom remodel, so that is building money we didn’t have to spend and can be used on different projects,” said Amon. “I’m excited to see the high school renovations finish which should be happening this summer.”

Projects from the past are also finally coming to fruition. One thing which has been discussed by previous superintendents and will finally be a reality is the building of a new elementary school, thanks to the Cushing community voting to approve a recent bond. Amon said she is most excited for this project to be completed.

“This bond provides the opportunity to improve our school facilities at a tremendous value to the tax payers of our community,” Amon said.

Although the project will be a long-term one, she said she is already excited to see the final outcome.

Since becoming superintendent Amon has taken great strides in the completion of the facility plan and put the district students at the forefront at every turn.

“My continued goal is to provide the highest quality learning experience for our students.”

Cushing Public Schools has 1,826 students enrolled in one of the district’s five campuses: Cushing PreKindergarten, Cushing Lower Elementary, Cushing Upper Elementary, Cushing Middle School and Cushing High School.

City of Cushing Overcoming challenges of the past year.

MEISNER Although Cushing is a small, rural community, its city government provides the amenities and services of a big city, with a respected police force and a fire department that includes full paramedic-level services and state-of-the art facilities that house the equipment necessary to handle even the worst sort of storage tank blaze. Cushing also maintains a large public pool and water park, indoor and outdoor youth recreation facilities and a collection of well-kept parks.

Although 2021 brought on its share of unexpected challenges, Cushing City Manager Terry Brannon said work continued to prepare the city for a major renovation to Main Street (SH 33) scheduled this fall.

City crews and contractors have completed work moving the utilities around the intersections of Little and Main and Linwood and Main in preparation for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation’s widening and rehabilitation of those intersections.

Brannon said that the city has acquired nearly all the necessary rights of way and easements from property owners along Main Street to allow for the much-needed resurfacing and widening of the street and the installation of new sidewalks and curbing.

Other civic improvements include what Brannon calls a significant upgrade to the computerized control system at the electrical power plant.

Over the course of 2020, the city worked to repave nearly 5 lane miles of residential city streets and installed 1,500 feet of sewer line extension in the city’s northeast neighborhoods.

The City of Cushing is governed by a five-member board of commissioners.

“The commission has positioned the city’s staff to be able to accomplish so much within the resource pool that we have today,” said Brannon. “We are able to get a lot of stuff done. We have a fantastic group of men and women at the City of Cushing. It begins with the elected officials, but I can’t praise our team enough — throughout our organization, from clerical to parks, to emergency management, police, fire, public works — through resources and commitment, our city team brings it every day. That has nothing to do with me. It has everything to do with the staff and the governing body.”

Brannon said that overcoming the challenges of 2020 revealed Cushing’s resiliency.

“This will manifest itself in the way we bounce back,” he said.

The Chrisman’s opened their business on Nov. 3 of 2019, naming it partly after the town that they know and love,

“It was a wild beginning,” said Miranda. “We are blessed that we have a loyal and supportive community.”

Cushing Youth & Community Center Continues to promote healthy lifestyles

he Cushing Youth and Community Center has been a fixture in Cushing for decades and more and more people are using the 27,000 square foot facility every day.

“Our facility is equipped to provide a fun, safe, and healthy environment for all ages,” said Youth Center Director Mike Wilson.

The center provides weight rooms for men and women, a cardio room, basketball gym, a game room with pool tables, and an aerobics room.

T-ball for 4-year-old and 5 and 6-year-old leagues starts in the spring. Coach pitch is offered for girls and boys who are 8 and under.

There are 10 and under, and 12 and under fastpitch softball leagues for girls and 10 and under Peewee, and 12 and under Midget baseball leagues for boys.

Wilson said the number of teams can vary.

“By the time we’re done we usually have about 34-35 teams signed up on average,” said Wilson.

“We also have a youth sports program for young people aged 4 through 12 that is played throughout the calendar year,” Wilson said. “If you are looking to live a healthier life style or maybe you want your child to participate in a sporting event, the Cushing Youth Center is the right place for you.”

Regular football and cheer is offered for grades three through six. Flag football is available for first and second grade boys and girls.

The facility even has a large conference room which can be rented to host reunions and parties. Rental fees for that room range from $40 for one or two hours to $100 for up to eight hours.

Open and novice wrestling is open for students in first to sixth grade.

Recently the women’s weight room had a leg extension leg curl and glut machine added to it, as wells as a pull down and pull up dip tree.

New dumbbells and new benches have also been added.

The center also hosts a youth sports program

Two leagues of soccer are offered in the fall for Kindergarten through second grade, and third grade through sixth.

There is a third and fourth grade basketball league as well as a fifth and sixth grade league.

A basketball camp is offered for all youth in grades first through sixth.

“In wrestling, we’ll have anywhere from 50 to 60 novice wrestlers and probably 25 to 35 open wrestlers,” Wilson said.

The Youth Center supports a sports complex at 229 S. Harmony Rd which features four

baseball fields, four softball fields, and a regulation soccer field.

All youth sport games are held at the sports complex except football and basketball games. Football games take place at the Cushing High School Football field and basketball games are held in the indoor facilities at 700 S. Little Ave.

“We host numerous tournaments out there,” Wilson said. “And the high school hosts a soccer tournament out there.”

The youth center is open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Wednesday the center closes at 5 p.m. The center is open on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In addition to Wilson, Youth Center staff include Jared Kennedy as programs director, Ryan Kennedy as complex manager and Assistant Program Directors Heather Bernard and Kevin Bowling.

The Spirit of a Grand Showplace Lives Again!

BY WICK HAMPTON The spirit of a grand showplace lives again! After nearly a century since it first opened, The Dunkin Theatre has a new life and takes center stage in the heart of Cushing, Oklahoma.

In 1926, small town oilman, Hiram Dunkin, built the second of two movie theaters he owned in Cushing, Oklahoma. The Dunkin Theatre became the showplace of entertainment for this bustling town of just under 10,000 people. Cushing at one time had as many as four movie theaters, however the Dunkin was unlike any of its contemporaries. Georgian marble graced the inside lobby while the outside was clad in highly decorated terracotta with a dramatic metal awning covering a patterned tiled sidewalk.This new theater was built to accommodate both silent movies and national touring vaudeville acts. With the advent of talking pictures and the end of vaudeville, additional seating took the place of the orchestra pit in front of the stage bringing the capacity to 1,100 seats. Newspapers across the state claimed that “There is no theater of its size in the state exceeding it in artistry.” The $150,000 spent to construct the Dunkin is equivalent to approximately $2.5 million today.

Mr. Dunkin participated in the Oklahoma Land Run of 1889, struck it rich in the oil industry and then became a successful businessman, owning movie theaters. In the early days, he and his family ran the Dunkin Theatre themselves. Hiram was the manager, his wife, Josie, handled tickets and son, Jim, was in charge of advertising and bookings. While being a wealthy man, Mr. Dunkin was generous and remembered his humble roots. He didn’t want those without money to miss the “Great Shows” and went so far as to advertise in the newspaper that free admission would be given to those who could not afford the price of a ticket. During the Depression, ticket prices for the general public were reduced and no one without a ticket was turned away from the Dunkin Theatre, especially children.

Not only that, Mr. Dunkin for a time, gave away a bicycle every Saturday to a lucky kid after the matinee. For the adults drawings for furniture also were common and one time, a new car was given away.

Fast forward to present day Cushing. The downtown definitely has seen better days with buildings empty or abandoned and damaged by recent earthquakes. Entire sections of blocks are now vacant lots where buildings holding businesses once thrived. A new spirit, however, enters the picture and the

Dunkin Theatre is purchased by a man with a passion and vision even greater than the theater’s namesake. Geoff Beasley is the new hero for the historic theater and reinvented entertainment venue.

After a two year, 3 million-dollar renovation that not only is spectacular but borderlines on miraculous, the Dunkin Theatre is open once again! Geoff’s attention to detail in bringing back to life this local treasure is even greater than that of the original builder.

Live performances of national acts once again grace the Dunkin’s stage along with first run movies. New lighting and a spectacular sound system along the likes one would expect to find at event centers in much larger cities far away from small town Oklahoma.

The theater now has new comfortable seating for 310 patrons on the main floor and luxury seating with tray tables and dining in the balcony, and all seating has the obligatory cupholders. Marble and tile flooring and details have been restored or appropriately replaced where the originals had been that were carelessly removed over time from previous remodels.

The outside of the theater is as now as majestic as it once was nearly one hundred years ago. A state-of-the-art theater marquee with LED display not only spells out the current and coming attractions, but digital images also herald the events inside. The art deco letters spelling DUNKIN have been recreated and are replicated atop the new marquee reminiscent of the marquee from the theater’s former heyday. The original Dunkin letters can still be seen in the display case between the theater and the adjoining restaurant along with other memorabilia. Terra cotta florets on the outside of the theater have been meticulously recreated and placed where the original details had been.

In July of 2021, I was in Cushing visiting family for the first time since before the pandemic. My mother knew I was excited to see the Dunkin’s restoration as well as the new restaurant, Godofredo’s Pizzeria and Tap Room, next door to the theater in the old Peter’s Department Store. The restaurant was not yet open for business and the movie theater was locked as it was before showtime the day we went downtown, but a kind employee saw me peeking through glass doors and let my mother and I inside. This turned out to be our lucky day as we were introduced to Brandon Wolf, the Dunkin’s manager as well as Geoff whose brainchild Godofredo’s and the reinvented Dunkin Theatre are. Geoff showed us just about every inch of both spaces pointing out wonderful details like a proud papa. I shared with Geoff how I had worked at Peter’s Department Store while I was in high school, so I know the space very well. It was incredible to see the new restaurant in what had originally been a retail store.

We were shown the backstage area of the theater and where the original dressing rooms were and the old lighting and curtain controls. I pointed out to Geoff where the old theater marquee letters had been stored and told he and Brandon that Mrs. Jones, the theater manager, had shown a friend of mine and I all around the Dunkin when we were in high school over forty years ago. I asked Geoff and Brandon if they had known of Mrs. Jones? They had heard of her but that was before their time. She managed the Dunkin Theatre for over twenty-five years. She ran a tight ship

and did not tolerate any nonsense, but she was always kind to me. Then off the cuff I remarked wouldn’t it be cool if the theater was haunted? Maybe by a former actor or even Mrs. Jones.

Brandon said that some strange things happened when he was in the theater alone…lights that were on being turned off, finding doors that had been opened were shut, strange sounds. He said he hoped it was Hiram Dunkin keeping an eye on things.

This past fall, I returned home to Cushing for Thanksgiving. My cousin, Caroline from Dallas, came up to visit while I was there.

She has a passion for architecture and history, so I took her to see downtown Cushing. We were very fortunate that the Dunkin was open and we were given a tour by Brandon. He took Caroline and I through the entire venue and we finished in the main theater area where Brandon shared with us the exciting projects and events coming up and some of the challenges that they had overcome.

His passion, pride and excitement were contagious. I then asked him if he had experienced any other paranormal experiences since the last time I was there. Brandon laughed and said, “You know, strange things continue to happen every now and then.”

I told Brandon and my cousin the memories I had about Mrs. Jones walking up and down the aisles making sure patrons didn’t have their feet up on the seatback in front of them and that folks were watching the movie and not talking or being disruptive. I remember Mrs. Jones smacking the back of people’s seatbacks who were in violation of these rules. At that moment the overhead lights in the front quarter of the theater started to flicker. Brandon said he had never seen that happen before and I replied, “Maybe it was Mrs. Jones and we were talking too loud.” We all laughed and then the lights on the opposite side started to flicker as well. Both sides of ceiling lights at the front of the theater began alternating between off and on for a few more seconds and then stopped and remained on. The three of us laughed at what we had just seen and Brandon said this was the first time he had experienced something like that. He said he felt that there was good energy and a presence in the building, like something looking out for them and happy with all the improvements and changes that they have made. Brandon said he thought Hiram Dunkin would be pleased with the theater today. At that moment all the overhead lights went out at once, came back one, went off again and then came back on and remained on. Brandon said he didn’t know how what had happened was possible, since the three of us were the only ones in the theater. We couldn’t help but laugh, thinking that some benevolent spirit was having fun with us and ultimately glad about the state of things in this exciting, reimagined venue.

So, the spirit of fun, good food and great entertainment is alive and well in the Dunkin Theatre and Godofredo’s in Cushing, Oklahoma.

Gone are the days of free cars and furniture giveaways however the children of Cushing as well as veterans benefit from Geoff’s generosity. Movies, live music, laughter and applause once again fill the Dinkin as well as the new restaurant next door. This is an experience not to be missed and to definitely be repeated often.

The idea they landed on was making the current disc golf course safer to play on as well as converting it into a 18-hole course to meet tournament standards.

“I had the idea to pitch a temporary course to gain traction and awareness for this sport here in town,” said Pauly.

Pauly said that after speaking with City Manager Terry Brannon they learned that there was already a grant put in by Cushing Rotary to fund the original nine T-pads located at Memorial Park.

“We secured the funding through the Rotary Club for the first nine and Geoff Beasley with Godofredo’s and the Dunkin Theater gave a matching bid for the remaining nine, so with the city’s help and Terry Brannon working on maybe purchasing those baskets, we can have a brand new 18-hole course here in town,” explained Pauly.

Pauly said he hopes with the support of the commission, Memorial Park can become a
