Whether it was volleyball, soccer, cheerleading, or other clubs/extracurricular activities, the camaraderie, collaboration, connectedness, and commitment to something bigger than myself was instrumental in shaping who I am today – as a person, as a life-long educator, and as a leader.

“The athletic program at Elgin High School plays a major role in the lives of our students. With our coaches at the helm, student athletes develop the self-discipline, motivation and leadership skills that are needed to be successful in the classroom and in adult life. During my ten years on campus, I have been fortunate enough to see this first-hand. The students who participate in athletics are pushed physically and mentally on a daily basis. They practice and compete late into the evenings, over weekends and through holiday breaks. They receive appropriate consequences for unmarketable behaviors such as being late, being disrespectful, earning low grades or having poor sportsmanship. They learn how to be responsible, how to work hard and how to put themselves on track to be successful. What our student athletes gain from our program has little to do with wins and losses and EVERYTHING to do with acquiring skills to become productive and successful young citizens. I am proud of our growing athletic program and will continue to work hard to improve it.”

Meet EHS Athletic Director/Head Football Coach: Heath Clawson • Enjoys working with our athletes, all sports, building things, and spending time with family and friends • Wife: Kim; 3rd Grade ELAR Teacher at Neidig Elementary; Enjoys working out, reading, and spending time with family and friends • Son: Jhett, 3 years old; Loves all sports, Paw Patrol, Toy Story, and Spider-Man “I have been blessed to coach and teach at several schools across Texas for the past 20 years. I coached at Del Valle to begin my career in 2002, got my first coordinator job at Manor in 2007, and became an AD/HFC at Louise in 2016. I was blessed to win 2 football State Championships at Aledo in 2019 and 2020. I have also coached basketball, baseball, track, golf, tennis, and softball. We are excited to be a part of the Elgin family, and help the students and athletes here work to be the best they can be. We have brought the motto of Unity, Toughness, and Discipline (#UTD) to represent the core values of the Wildcat Athletic Program. We are on the verge of major growth in the community, school district, and the athletic program. It takes everyone to have a successful athletic program, including the coaches, athletes, parents, teachers, administration, and community supporting in a positive collective effort to benefit the kids. Wildcat Athletics is about to take off over the next few years as a top program in the state with the help of everyone involved.

Behind The Mask Hi, my name is Hannalee Cervantes and I am in the 9th grade. I’ve grown up in Elgin for as long as I can remember.

It is my second time volunteering as Wanda and it’s been really fun so far.

The first time I was Wanda was at JV’s last game and the second time was this photoshoot. But, my position in the team is being an EHS Varsity cheerleader. We are hoping to compete this year and that is currently my main focus. My future goals are to attend college, major in Government, and become a lawyer.

HISTORY OF THE WILDCAT

*A sincere thank you to Donna Snowden and Christine Reed for contributions to this piece In 1930, Elgin High School did not have any athletic teams, due to a lack of funds.

Five years later, with sports having been revived, the school colors were established as brown and white and the teams were referred to as the “Elgin Athletes.”

It is believed that the wildcat mascot was implemented, along with the school’s color change to purple and white, some time in the 1940s.

In the coming years, the Elgin High School band had mascots. Each year, a child of about five years old would fulfill this role for the program, marching and twirling along with the band. Elgin native Donna Snowden was a mascot herself in 1952.

“What fun I had riding on the bus to football games with the band,” she remembers.

Later, in the 1960s, the band ceased having a mascot, while the cheerleading team began employing a local kindergartener to assist with outings at athletic events and

school functions.

It is not believed that the mascot became a high school student dressed as a wildcat until some time in the mid to late 90s.

“In my year, 2000, in the summer before the school year started, the school held tryouts for the mascot,” remembers former Elgin mascot Christine Reed (known formerly as Christine Perez).

“We were to create a skit using music and dance choreography to display school spirit. We had four others try out that year. With the help of my brother’s pop warner football team and my sister’s junior cheerleaders, we put on a skit and won by a five-person vote.”

The wildcat would be responsible for not only attending Elgin High football games. “Kitty,” as the mascot came to be known, would also make appearances at other sport-

ing events when scheduling permitted.

“We would attend the town’s big events such as Hogeye and Western Days,” says Reed. “Dressed in our full outfit in the Texas heat, marching and dancing down mainstreet.”

In 2001, Reed’s senior year, “Kitty” even performed at a pre-game show for the 2001 Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida.

“The mascot is the hype-man for all events of Elgin High,” says Reed. “It is our job to be over the top and to keep spirits high no matter what. No one sees our face, no one knows the struggles inside the suit, all they know is that we have the purple and white spirit!”

“My name is Jacob Rowe and I am the head girls powerlifting coach at Elgin High School and the Region 2 director for Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association. I am married to my wife Charly and have two children, SonnyAnn and Abraham. I took over the girls’ powerlifting program in Elgin two years ago. There were a total of six girls in the entire program. I am very passionate about powerlifting and knew Elgin could be competitive if the team was just given the right vision and direction. In the Rowe household powerlifting is a way of life. Charly is a certified powerlifting judge who not only judges meets but also helps the Elgin team wrap, call, and run meets throughout the year. She has been an unofficial assistant coach with me since my first year coaching and has helped me literally coach state champions in the sport. Without her, we would

A hobby of mine is powerlifting of which I am a 5x National Champion (20062008, 2010, 2011). not have had the success we have had these past two years. Both my kids are no stranger to the competitive environment who know the field house as a second home and know the team members as well as their own siblings.

The first thing I knew we needed to do was establish a strong leadership council as well as recruit more numbers.

I spent several weeks scouting hallways, other sports, and the band hall grabbing girls who might be interested in competing on the team.

With the help of the leadership council we soon went from six girls on the roster to eighteen. From that group I grabbed several upperclassmen and put them through a rigorous five week leadership curriculum that required them to attend lessons, read a leadership book, and write a ten page paper on what leadership is. While establishing

the leadership council I began to build a lifting program that would make Elgin competitive in our region. Our saying for our program is, “Win the Day!” Goals are not accomplished with giant advances but rather small victories each day.

Each athlete in our program is expected to have the mindset of winning in the classroom, in competition, and in being a good citizen and teammate.

Now with a growing team, an assistant coach, Kaitlyn Steck-Garcia, and an established program, the end goal is nothing short of a State Championship. We will not be satisfied until our team is number one in the state. I am proud to be an Elgin Wildcat and my goal since day one has been to put Elgin on the map as a place of excellence. The Elgin girls powerlifting program exemplifies that goal. One Town, One Team, One Family. Win the Day!”

DARYL REMSCHEL Head Tennis Coach “I am going into my 26th year as the Head Tennis coach at Elgin High School. My wife and I have 5 children (all girls) and 1 granddaughter. Outside of school I love spending time with my family and also spending time at the beach.

My love of tennis began as a child because both of my parents played. I started playing in adult tournaments when I was still in middle school and was a varsity player as a freshman in high school. I continued to play tennis recreationally during college and continued to play in local tournaments once I began coaching here in Elgin. I have been the head coach here for 2 and a half decades at this point and I still love working with the athletes who play tennis at our school. I hope in some way I am encouraging them to continue playing even after they are done with high school.”

“We are very excited about the potential for our 21-22 Varsity Girls Soccer season. We have a talented team that is bolstered by six Seniors, four Juniors, eight Sophomores, and two Freshmen. Senior captain (and Texas Lutheran commit) Allisyn Carter, Senior captain Jasmin Estrada, and Senior midfielder Crystal Jaimes lead our squad. There are several impact Juniors and Sophomores, including Junior defenders Bela Estrada, Tory McDonald, and Grace Segura, as well as Sophomore goalkeeper Juliet Almazan, Sophomore midfielder Fernanda Chavarin and Sophomore forward Maria Yanez. Two Freshmen forwards, Kailyn Cook and Dory Estrada, have been making an early impact as well.

This is Mr. Cansler’s third year as the Girls Varsity Head Coach. He previously coached the Middle School Boys team for one season. He has been teaching US History at Elgin Middle School for four years now. Coach Gabby Perez is in her first year as our JV Coach. She is a former graduate of Elgin High School and was voted the team’s 2012 Defender of the Year.”

A beloved high school coach and teacher, Matthew Foehner passed on December 17, 2021 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Elgin, November 8, 1976, Foehner would graduate from Elgin High School with the Class of ‘95, going on to what came to be known as Texas State, in San Marcos. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree, making many lifelong friends along the way.

Late in 2004, Foehner met the love of his life, Kimberly, on a blind date that was arranged by a mutual friend. Kimberly and Matt were married on January 7, 2006.

Foehner would later pursue his teaching certificate and begin his career as an educator and coach at Elgin High School in 2009.

He is remembered as a cherished member of the school’s staff and a mentor to many students who passed through the halls of E.H.S. Foehner was known for going out of his way to support community members, and for showing sincere care for the future of his students.
