Welcome from the Superintendent! One of the many bright spots in Elgin ISD is our outstanding extracurricular programs. Our district, with the support of our School Board, has made a firm commitment to invest in programs that continually strive to improve the educational experience for all of our students. Our athletic programs, in particular, are an integral part of our school curriculum and are often the building blocks of promoting school pride. Not only do these activities have a profound effect on our students and school as a whole, but also our community. All of these programs intentionally bring people together, and it is a connection that is deep and meaningful. In fact, it defines our very mantra – One Town, One Team, One Family! Although our primary focus will always be academics, our sports programs are intended to support academic learning by developing habits of mind and promoting the skills that students need to be successful in the classroom. Being involved in athletics not only connects our students to a broader educational purpose, but it also develops them into productive, contributing, and well-rounded citizens. We are grateful for the opportunity to provide these life-changing experiences to our students. We are equally grateful for your support for our athletes and for our Elgin ISD Athletic Program. Welcome from the MS Principal! My name is Riza Cooper, I am a 12 year, proud Principal at Elgin Middle School. I have been blessed with a 21-year career in education total ranging from a secondary math teacher, Assistant Principal, and Principal. My years at Elgin Middle School have been full of growth and opportunity, especially in the athletics program. For me, a long-term goal for the EMS Athletic program is to build a program focused around “student-athletes.” It is important that we teach and instill in our students that they should display exceptional accomplishments academically, athletically, and within community service. When reflecting on Elgin Athletics, I believe that we truly encapsulate the “OTOTOF.” When watching my coaches and athletes at all sporting events, it is evident that we are a true FAMILY. We have instilled in our coaching staff and students what it means to be a team and succeed as one together. It gives me great honor to be a part of this generation of educators and coaches.

Director of Boys Athletics Coach Toraric Wade is the boys Athletics Coordinator, Head football, Basketball and Track coach. He is an accomplished, energetic professional with a diverse background in athletics and education, supervising sports teams, developing athletic budgets, building successful teams of players, and maintaining good project management skills. Coach Wade demonstrates strong leadership, motivation, coaching, and mentoring skills. He quickly identifies athletes’ potentials, strengths and weaknesses. Coach Wade is excited about track season and can’t wait to see everyone compete. Coach Wade credits the Elgin community, a supportive staff and an amazing administration for the growth and development of our athletes. “It takes a village and we are all in
this together”. The motto of our program is UTD which stands for Unity, Toughness, and Discipline. Our mission is to engage youth student athletes now so that they are active and informed when they get to the high school level. The program’s main goal is to develop student athletes who excel in the classroom and the community. The program helps students demonstrate excellence in every aspect of what it takes to develop a winning atmosphere. It provides student-athletes with the skills they need to be winners in sports and more importantly winners in life. Players and coaches are taught sportsmanship, ethics, teamwork, responsibility, commitment and leadership as we strive to reach our team goals and individual goals.

Track Coaches COACH DUSTIN MAEDGEN Coach Dustin Maedgen has been teaching and coaching in Elgin for the past 16 years. He lives in Elgin with his wife Melissa, and twin girls Dusty and Drew. Coach Maedgen coaches throwing (shot,disc) during track season. He is excited about this year’s throwers as they have been off to a great start. This looks to be a good year for Elgin track, and we are ready to help the kids grow and develop in the offseason.
COACH BREUN CRENSHAW Coach Breun Crenshaw grew up in Del Valle Texas. Graduated from Texas A&m University-Commerce. He is in his first year of coaching Football, Basketball, and track (Long distance) and teaching here at Elgin middle school. Coach Crenshaw is a Chicago Bears and Texas A&M fan. He encourages his runners to be curious. To “Climb mountains, not so the world can see you, but so you can see the world.”
COACH SCHATTE Coach Schatte lives in Giddings with his wife and two daughters & expecting another in June! Throughout his time in education he has prided himself on building relationships with his students. Coach Schatte loves to spread his excitement and passion for sports with other students. He coaches football, basketball, soccer and track! In his free time, he enjoys going with his family to livestock shows, watching his daughters show cattle, farming and ranching with his father and watching Texas A&M Football!

Director of GIRLS Athletics COACH KIM JAMISON “I am from Center Texas, a small town in East Texas. I was recruited by Baylor University and awarded a scholarship. While at Baylor I played basketball and softball. After graduation I gained employment at Lovelady ISD where I coached varsity basketball, volleyball, and track. After three years there, I moved back to Waco and coached at University High School for three years. Since then, I have coached at various middle schools and now I am at Elgin. I absolutely love my job. My mission as the girls’ coordinator is to continuously improve our program. I want to ensure that our girls gain the self-confidence and motivation to excel in any endeavor they attempt. I believe all of that begins with respect and healthy relationships among the athletes and the coaches. I have been in education for 29 years and 16 years coaching experience. Basketball is my favorite sport to coach. When I am not at work, I love to camp, fish, travel, and hike. I enjoy spending time with family and friends.”
Track Coaches COACH “KAT” GARCIA “I grew up in the Washington DC area, and am an alumna of George Mason University. Prior to graduating from GMU, I was briefly enrolled at North Carolina Wesleyan University, where I was a starter for the volleyball team. I’ve been teaching for 3 years, and this is my first year coaching. I currently reside in Hutto, TX with my husband, 4 dogs, 3 cats, and rabbit.”
COACH BRIAN THOMAS “This is my 15th year in coaching and my 2nd year at Elgin Middle School. I chose education because I wanted to have a positive impact on kids in the classroom as well as in sports. When not at EMS, I enjoy staying active with my CrossFit gym. Taking the pups hiking and enjoy spending time with friends and family. Traveling the world is another passion of mine having traveled to 19 countries and 45 states and looking to add more in the near future. “
COACH JAMIE HOPKINS “I am originally from the Dallas area and moved to Austin, TX to attend Huston-Tillotson University, where I earned an athletic scholarship to run track and field. While at HT I studied Kinesiology and Education, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree and teaching certificate. I have now been teaching for 8 years, with this being my 2nd year in Elgin and first year coaching. During my free time, I enjoy spending time with my husband and two kids.”

The Elgin MS school band is under the direction of Alfred Medina and Melissa Anderson. “I am in my first school-year in Elgin ISD and at Elgin Middle School. I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and am in my 17th year as a band director. I have taught mostly in San Antonio and in Pasadena, TX and have experience with high school and middle school bands. Along with teaching the 7th and 8th graders at the EMS, Ms. Anderson and I teach beginner band classes at Elgin Intermediate School. This school-year the Elgin MS band program has returned to 100% in-person band classes while still taking precautions for student safety with COVID-19. Online distance learning caused limitations for bands, such as daily rehearsing of routines that increase skill levels, practicing with other students, and performing music in live settings. It is rewarding
to participate in many of the events that occur with a band program throughout a typical school-year, such as band concerts, performing at individual contests such as Solo & Ensemble and All-region tryouts, UIL Concert & Sight-reading evaluations, and school pep rallies and football games. We want to see the band program return to all these performances in the upcoming school year, so we are preparing for this goal. We want the band students to feel successful with their music skills, and to continue to excel these into the high school band. With the tremendous support we get from the administration and the school-district, I feel we will continue to see tremendous growth in the upcoming years of the Elgin ISD bands. I am excited to be joining the Elgin ISD band directors with these goals of preparing the students for excelling and performing.”

The end to another successful E.M.S. basketball season Corey Smith Sports Writer

y early February, the Elgin Middle School girls’ seventh and eighth grade basketball teams had concluded their respective campaigns. The girls seventh grade A team, which among its great collection of talent contained Crisbel Hernandez, Ta’Mayra Walker, Katelyn Anderson and Jennavie Giron on the roster, lost its season finale on the road to Tippit. “Although we lost this game, I am so proud of this group of young ladies,” said coach Kim Jamison. “They have come so far and I look forward to even more growth next season.” The girls seventh grade B team, led by coach Jamie Hopkins and players Mieryea Sauceda, Emma Lugala and Kimberly Garcia, also enjoyed a strong year, playing competitively both at home and on the road throughout the campaign. The eighth grade A team had a tough time building offensive momentum during their final game, falling 39-16. The group did, however, continue to show intensity throughout the contest while fighting for rebounds. Alaylah Martinez led the way with six points and Trinity Martinez pitched in five points during the finale, while De’asia Joiner, Bella Navejas and Jaliyah Price created second-chance opportunities with a flurry of offensive boards. The eight grade B squad, meanwhile, ended its season with a 35-20 home win against Tippit, as Legacy Williams scored a team-high nine points and Bobbie Fitzgerald tallied eight. Additionally, for the first time all season, every Lady Wildcat scored during the course of the game. For the Elgin Middle School boys’ teams, the season closed on the final day of January. PAGE 20
For the eighth grade A team, Tyson McFarlin continued to demonstrate traits of a soonto-be varsity player, stacking up a game-high 24 points during a 72-19 season finale win over Tippit. Nathan Perkins also scored 21 points, and Gary Jefferson 10, as the Wildcats wrapped up the season at a dominant 8-1 mark. The team’s lone defeat of the year came at the Bastrop Invitational, where Elgin placed third among eight competing programs.

he B team eighth graders nearly tripled up Tippit in their final outing of the season, winning 3012. Dagan Smith (seven points), Lewis Reese (six) and Leonardo Granados (four) were the top-scoring Wildcats there. In Georgetown, the
seventh grade A team secured a 55-38 win over Tippit to round out the season at an 8-1 record. Christian Gomez totaled 20 points, Dylan Owens piled up 16 and Xavien Rainbolt produced eight. The B team (6-1) took their first loss of the year

earlier in the same evening, dropping a 24-17 decision, as Andre Simmons scored five, Troy Collins collected four points and Ali Young gathered three. Given the degree of success coach Toraric Wade has fostered within the Elgin Middle

School boys basketball program, it’s fair to say the high school will be excited to begin a new era with this excellent group of up-and-coming players. For the eighth graders remaining for one more middle school campaign, it’s time to run it back. PAGE 21
