Comet girls pick up two big wins Take down Tunstall, Bassett, face Patrick Monday, district-leading MV Tuesday

The Halifax County High School varsity girls basketball team picked up two important Piedmont District wins last week, besting Bassett on Friday 50-20, and getting a lopsided 6122 victory over Tunstall Thursday.

The Comets are 12-3, 8-1 Piedmont with their only district loss to Magna Vista. MV (18-2, 11-0) sits in first place. Patrick County, GW-Danville, and Martinsville hold third through fifth, in that order.

The Comets finish up their regular season schedule this week when they take on Patrick County tonight and end the season with a rematch with MV on Tuesday, both, in South Boston. Game time is 7 p.m.

The Piedmont District Tournament begins Friday according to the piedmontdistrictva.org website; with locations and times to be announced.

In Friday’s win over the Bengals, Ella Morrison’s 12 points along with KaWoody-Giggetts myria scoring 10 points paced the Comets. Saviana Bailey barely missed double digits, posting eight points.

Halifax scored 15 points in the first quarter while

holding Bassett scoreless. Bailey and Morrison knocked down six each.

The Comets added more separation in the second quarter, winning the frame 20-6. TyNia Carrington scored two treys; Syreeta Hunter had a deuce and went 1-2 at the line.

The 35-6 halftime score would be insurmountable for Bassett.

Halifax’s offensive output dropped dramatically in the third period, yet, they only lost the stanza 6-4.

The locals sealed the final quarter, 11-8, for the 30-point win. WoodyGiggetts had four points and Cordaiza Brandon added a three-pointer.

Morrison missed the double-double by one rebound, finishing with nine. She added a block. The team recorded 10 steals.

Massive rock concert set at VIR

Four-day Blue Ridge Rock festival expected to draw tens of thousands to Alton track The Blue Ridge Rock Festival — a fourday event that landed last year in Pittsylvania County and drew daily crowds of some 33,000 people for hard rock and rap music acts — is coming to Virginia International Raceway in 2022.

The event will take place at the Alton track Sept. 8-11 with a lineup of performers to be announced. Last year’s event was described by Pittsylvania County officials as the largest in the county’s history, and

featured more than 180 bands spanning a variety of genres — heavy metal, thrash metal, hip-hop, rap rock — with acts including Rob Zombie, Megadeth, Limp Bizkit, Seether, Ludacris, T-Pain and Lil John.

In a statement to the Danville Register & Bee, Virginia International Raceway President Kerrigan Smith said, “This event is very unique to VIR as we have never hosted a music festival of this scale.
