The Town of Clarksville’ s proposed 2021-22 budget comes with tax and fee increases to make up for lost revenues from the pandemic and needed infrastructure projects. to cover the costs of “Revenues were better than from pre-pandemic levels,” projected, but still down said Clarksville Town Manager Jeff Jones.

The nearly $5.8 million dollar budget, unveiled

by Jones at the Tuesday night meeting of Clarksville Town Council, comes with a one percent increase in the meals tax and lodging tax in water, sewer and garbage and a 3 percent increase rates.

The general fund budget comes in at $2.041 million, down nearly $3,000 from the current fiscal year. The water and sewer budgets top $3.7 million, which is nearly $2.3 million higher than current expenditures.

The three percent increase in water, sewer and gar garbage fees equates to $2.55 monthly for most in-town customers and $4.92 monthly for most out-of-town users.

Jones explained that the jump tures is tied to an improveme in sewer fund expendint town’s wastewater treatment project planned for the plant and the elimination of an existing pump station near Kinderton.

Clarksville has received a Rural Development grant/ loan to cover the cost. Of the $2,270,000 projected expense, 73.5 percent will be paid from the grant award and the remaining 26.5 percent will be borne by the Town, financed through a 40-year loan that carries an interest rate of 1.25 percent.

Because the grant-money is a ville must do its own interim reimbursement, Clarksfinancing. For that reason, Jones said he included the total cost of the sewer project in the town budget for fiscal year 2022.

March 13 was a fairly normal day for Chase City 11-year-old Kinley Jackson, aside from the fact that she was getting ready to face a fierce audition among talent from across the nation for a part in North Carolina’s Tony award-winning outdoor drama, “The Lost Colony.”

Jackson, daughter of Kelsey McCluster, arrived at the Waterside Theatre in Manteo, N.C. and was whisked away for a three-hour audition by the Kinley Jackson production staff of “The Lost Colony.”

Auditions consisted of singing, acting, dancing and puppetry skills.

“The Lost Colony” is America’s premier and longest-running outdoor symphonic drama, with a cast of 120 members from all parts of the U.S. In 2013, “The Lost Colony” received the Tony Award for excellence in theatre and is the only organization in North Carolina to receive the prestigious stage award.
