wenty twenty-one was a crazy year. You may have noticed this magazine was a little later than normal. After two years of no quarantines, my youngest got sent home from school for close contact. That same day, she tested positive for COVID. Two days later, my husband did, as well. I felt good knowing that I am fully vaccinated. The universe has jokes. I tested positive a week after my daughter. My oldest did, too. I felt fine, right up until I didn’t. I was eating dinner and every bite tasted a little more bland. Then I realized I couldn’t taste anything at all. I literally stuck my nose in a bottle of garlic and smelled nothing. My head hurt too bad to lift it. Standing made me dizzy. I had no appetite and couldn’t sleep at all. My husband had been sleeping on an air mattress in the living room (hoping to contain the virus), so I couldn’t even blame his snoring. I didn’t get it bad, but I understand now how it gets so bad. Like I said, I was fine right up until I wasn’t. It hit me like a ton of bricks. I’m finally on the mend, as is the rest of my family. I actually got almost a full eight hours of sleep last night AND ate lunch today. That’s progress! So, I’m a little late. Besides being seriously sick, COVID brain is real. I feel like I’m in a fog. It’s getting better, but still there. Now, let me reflect on the rest of the year instead of just the last month. This year, I was able to take an amazing vacation with my best friends to see one of my favorite people. I got a brand new kitchen. I watched my daughter put down her bat for the final time. There was a lot of laughter, a few fights and many memories made. We officially gained a future son-in-law, too! He became a Marine this year, too. They’ve been together for almost four years and we absolutely love him. I can’t say that 2021 was as bleak as 2020, but can we all agree to make 2022 good? Not good in comparison, just simply good in its own right?

am Trickey didn’t set out to open a business on the square. In fact, she was really just looking for a new home. She has family in Boonville and Newburgh and wanted to be near both sides. So, she began looking at homes in Boonville. She wasn’t super excited about the prospects. She was looking at 1,200 square foot homes in the $70,000 to $80,000 price range. “We just started looking at homes in Boonville area,” she said. “As soon as I saw this building, my husband said he saw my face as soon as I walked in and he said, ‘Yep, that’s the place we’re buying.’ We were really just looking to relocate and get closer to the kids and back in either the Newburgh or Boonville area.” The building they bought, 120 W. Locust, is three floors - each totalling 3,300 square feet, plus a basement. Pam also liked the historical significance of the space. “The price that was available on this one, it was a no-brainer for me,” she said. “It was a historical place, as well as lots of space to do something in.” All that unexpected space - and the prime location on the square - gave Pam another task, deciding what to do with it. “I bought the building in October 2019 and our goal was to renovate the second floor for our residence first,” she said. “Then the goal was to renovate the first floor into our shop. We had not decided at that point what kind of shop. So, from the time we did renovation on the second floor - which is still not complete, by the way; it’s liveable because we redirected our attention.” Then, there was a pandemic. Instead of hastily opening something during a dire economy, Pam spent 2020 planning. She networked and asked people in the community what they’d like to see in the space. The answer was resounding - a coffee shop. So, she had her “what,” now she just needed to fill in the “how.” She visited many of the local coffee
shops in the tri-state. One of her research trips took her to New Harmony’s Black Lodge Coffee Roasters, where she met Alex Gale. “From the moment I met Alex, he was just a joy to speak with, to engage with,” Pam said. “He was a wealth of knowledge from the coffee business standpoint. He had been in business almost 20 years himself. So, I just started asking him questions and he has unofficially become my mentor in the coffee business. He’s also our coffee roaster, so all of the beans that we have that we use for the coffee shop and the beans that we sell, Alex has roasted.” In June, demolition on the business space officially began. Just before Christmas, Trickey’s Brews and Bevs officially opened its doors. “It has gone fast! A lot of places and businesses that are just starting up and so forth, they’ve run into supplier issues and contractor issues. I’ve truly been blessed on being able to get this turned around within six months.”

Pam said her job was to get the space functional, but she assigned the “make it pretty” portion to Greta Harker. Pam’s only request was some eyecatching bathrooms. “I’m not a designer by trade,” Greta said. “I retired, with Pam’s encouragement, in October after 40 years at Meade Johnson. I’ve always been in marketing, but I’ve always had a passion for interior design. Pam told me first, ‘I want some wow bathrooms.’ I said, ‘How wow?’ She said, ‘Over the top.’ One of them is a bicycle for the sink and vanity. The other is an actual 1941 Jeep grille. Pam and I have been all over - we’ve been to three or four states - just sourcing everything. Everything is used, with the exception of (the coffee and kitchen equipment). Even our Christmas trees and a lot of the ornaments I got off Marketplace. It’s just been fun.” Both Greta and Pam got their husbands involved, too. “We tell them an idea and they’ve built tables for us,” Greta said. “We reused all the wood that was

in the basement. My neighbor, Dennis Mattingly, actually built all of our cabinets for us... They’re designed after the Magnolia Bakery in Waco, Texas. Everything has really come together at the end.” One of their favorite features is a garage door on the front. It has a screen, so it can be opened on nice days to allow guests a bit of fresh air. “That’s one of the unique attributes of the building,” Greta said. “We have a bar right up front where people can sit right in front of the screen and drink their coffee with a view of the courthouse. That’s a great feature, as well.” As the name implies, Trickey’s offers a selection of coffee and teas, along with Derr’s Soda. They have a soup option and a light “graze box,” which is based off a charcuterie board. Pam said their hours are somewhat limited right now so they didn’t “flex” too soon. They’re already formulating new ideas for the future,
though. Spoiler alert - there may be a coffee truck in the making. “We always like to say that we’re fine where we are right now, but look for other things to come,” Pam said. “We’re not content to stay where we are. We want to grow. Things are bubbling behind the scenes.”

he name Posey has been synonomous with groceries in Boonville for nearly 50 years. Wes Posey started the Little Giant grocery store in Boonville in 1974. Six years later, he decided to purchase the building he was renting and rebrand as Posey’s Supermarket. On Christmas 2010, Wes’s family convinced him to retire. He decided to sell the business to his daughter and son-in-law, Trish and Rick Draeger. Rick started working at Posey’s in January 1979. In June, he finalized the sale of the store. It wasn’t an easy decision, but it was time. “My wife had retired two years earlier than me,” Rick said. “It was just time to enjoy what time I’ve got left, I’m glad I did. I’m enjoying it so far.” Fernando Zepdda, the new general manager, said his boss had been looking at the Boonville area for awhile. Fernando is from Evansville and had never been to Boonville before he started running Posey’s. He said he wasn’t sure what to expect coming into a longtime community staple business, but he’s been pleasantly surprised. “When I first came over here, there were people that stopped coming in because of the sale,” he said. “A lot of people see that as a bad thing, but I don’t. It’s just loyalty. They’re loyal to their people. I’ve been here six months and I’ve got people. I’ve been gaining their trust.” Rick said the decision to sell a family business was extremely difficult. While owning a small business can be nice, it’s also very time-intensive. “I kinda felt like I let down Mr. Posey’s legacy,” he

said. “But still, I have to do what I have to do.” While his day-to-day life is a little less structured now, Rick still makes it a point to support the business that supported him for more than 40 years. “As much as anything, I really miss seeing everybody, all the customers,” he said. “Every time I come in, what should take me 20 minutes may take me an hour and a half or two hours because of talking and visiting with all the people.” And while his gift for gab hasn’t changed much, going through the check out line is a new experience for Rick.
“It was strange,” he laughed. “I bought the groceries. When the trucks came in, I paid for them. But it was really strange to really pay for them. That was a hidden cost. It didn’t hurt as bad as this.” While Fernando is making plans to possibly move to the city he’s grown to love, Rick - a transplant himself - is reflecting on a career that was more than he could have imagined. “I thank Boonville,” Rick said. “We’ve gotten great support all the years we’ve been here and that is wonderful. This is home to me. I’m from Owensboro, Ky., but having been here since ‘79, this is home. I love Boonville,”

The Coal Museum was founded in 1985 with the mission to serve and educate the public on the history of coal mining. The museum was built on land previously mined for coal and serves as an example how land can be put back to use after mining and reclamation. In addition to basic coal mining history, you can get a glimpse into what a company store and a company house would look like back when they were popular. See a real locomotive that was used in the county. There is also an ongoing restoration project of the first electric rope shovel built by the Bucyrus Erie company in Evansville. Everyone is welcome to visit the Museum to learn about coal mining and its history. The building is full of memorabilia, artifacts, and books on coal mining. No admission is charged for entry; the Museum operates on donations. Organizations and groups are also welcome, and tours can be arranged in advance. You can visit the museum Monday-Saturday from 9-4pm or Sunday from 12-4 p.m., although hours in the winter do vary. You can also visit their website at www.lynnvillecoalmuseum.org?utm_ source=hootsuite.
