fter a year apart, Danville once again held their BrewFest festival at the Carrington Pavilion. Danville Harvest Jubilee Committee Chair Amanda

Schlichting says due to the event being canceled last year, people were more excited and attendance numbers should rival with what is normally set. “I think people are more excited because people have been cooped up for so long, but we expect it to add up what we had inside the Community Market,” she said. Schlichting said with the additional space the Carrington Pavilion provides, it encourages more to attend and more vendors. She states in the Community Market, it’s difficult

to tell who is where. She summarizes it as drawing in traffic, better flow and making a better experience. Volunteers were also wearing “Reunited” shirts and Schlichting explains because everyone was physically apart last year. “We skipped a year, and we’re happy to be back,” she said. The event had live music entertainment and offered full pint pours for any drinks under 8 percent alcohol level. Schlichting detailed what sells the fastest. “Cider goes immediately and our home brewed stuff, Train Wreck, goes immediately.” She explained why this event should be a go-to for anyone

who wants to try different brews. “There’s a great amount of beer, but this is the one time a year you can get all beer and drinks in one area without having to drive two hours to get it. It’s your only chance to try it in the city of Danville. Breweries save you hours of driving accessible at your fingertips.” Other breweries that were present include: Port City Brewing Co., Firestone Walker Brewing Company, Foothills Brewing, Stone Brewing, New Belgium, Sycamore, Parkway Brewing Co., Devils Backbone Brewing Company, Star Hill Brewery and Chaos Mountain Brewing.•

THINGS T0 KNOW BEFORE GIFTING A PET

WRITTEN BY PAULETTE DEAN

1.

Do I have the time for a pet? It may sound fun to have a cute little dog waiting for you at the door each evening, but busy schedules may not be in the best interest of that dog. There is no such thing as a no-maintenance pet. Even fish in tanks require daily feeding and care to meet their physical needs.

Bringing a new pet into a home is life changing and usually comes with a degree of stress and anxiety for the animals as well as the humans. During the busy holiday season, the level of stress can skyrocket. In the past, most animal welfare organizations discouraged holiday pet adoptions. Some shelters now encourage adoptions if a family or individual wants a new pet. The general exception is that animals should not be given as surprise gifts. A gift certificate accompanied by wrapped presents of toys, treats, collars, cages, etc. would be a much better option. When thinking about bringing a new animal into a home, it is urged that people consider the following questions, as well as others that may pertain:

3. 2.

Can I afford this pet? Beyond the initial cost of adopting or purchasing a pet, it is wise to consider the monthly cost of food, routine and/or emergency veterinary care, and other supplies. All pets come with a financial obligation. 10 | DISCOVER MAGAZINE | SOUTHSIDE

What kind of pet would be the best match for me? If you lead a more sedentary lifestyle, it would not be wise to adopt a young, large, active puppy that needs long walks and romps in a fenced area. If someone in your household is allergic to cats, do not think that the cat will be happy living in a small room away from people for its entire life. Large birds are beautiful; they are also very social and messy. Even small companion animals like hamsters, guinea pigs, and rabbits have very specific physical and emotional needs.

4.

Does everyone in the household want this new pet? Children may want a pet and may make promises about how they will take care of them; however, the care of the pet will ultimately rest on the shoulder of the parents. Are all of the adults in the household in agreement with adding an animal to the family?

4.

If after all of these questions are answered honestly and the decision is made to bring in a new pet during the holidays, things may go more smoothly if the following steps are taken:

1.

Understand that a new pet, especially dogs and cats, may take a few weeks or more to “decompress” and feel comfortable in a new environment. Patience is a very good virtue to develop before, not after, you face that situation. Make sure they have a safe, quiet place they can retreat to on their own terms. The goal or mission of any animal welfare organization is to help animals lead long, happy lives in responsible, loving homes. With a lot of thought, advance preparation, and patience, bringing a new pet home, even during a busy holiday season can make that a reality. •

Purchase all supplies before bringing the animal home. Do not make small animals stay in a box until you go to a store to get supplies. Have their new home ready for them.

2. 3. Introduce the new pet to existing ones slowly. Do not open a cage with a new kitten in it and expect the adult cats to be happy. When introducing dogs and cats into a household with other pets, it is suggested to keep the new one confined in a room and let them sniff each other through the door for a few days. Dogs may be introduced while keeping both on a leash.

Think twice or three times or twenty times before letting Santa Claus put a new animal under the Christmas tree for the children to find. That new pet is already stressed and confused about the change in their life and simply does not understand that they are with a new family. The excitement of the holidays with company coming for dinner and gift exchanges can be the recipe for disasters in housebreaking! SOUTHSIDE | DISCOVER MAGAZINE | 11

TREE SAFETY No one wants to spoil the holiday season, but Christmas trees in the home can present a fire safety issue. A primary concern with a Christmas tree is fire danger, often brought on by the combination of electrical malfunctions and, in the case of a real tree, a drying tree.

IN THE UNITED STATES, CHRISTMAS TREES START APPROXIMATELY 210 HOUSE FIRES PER YEAR. According to a National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) report issued in 2015, U.S. fire departments responded to more than 200 home structure fires annually between 2009 and 2013 in which Christmas trees were the first item to catch on fire. Each year, fires occurring during the holiday season injure 2,600 individuals and cause over $930 million in damage, according to the United States Fire Administration. Sadly, Christmas tree-related fires have a higher incident of fatalities than typical house fires, according to the NFPA report.

ELECTRICAL MALFUNCTIONS ARE OFTEN TO BLAME FOR CHRISTMAS TREE FIRES. Electrical failures or malfunctions were involved in nearly half of the fires, igniting the tree with sparks or small electrical fires. Decorative lights with live voltage were involved in more than 20 percent of the instances. However, putting trees too close to open fires or heaters caused a significant number of fires as well: nearly a quarter occurred because a heat source was located too close to the tree. It isn’t just real trees that are a problem. Electrical malfunctions can also ignite plastic artificial trees, and homeowners should take the same precautions in terms of tree placement and decorations as they would with a real tree.

16 | DISCOVER MAGAZINE | SOUTHSIDE

BE CAREFUL WITH HOW YOU DISCARD YOUR TREE. You should take care with trees that are left outside as well. The NFPA report revealed that an annual average of 90 outside and other non-structure fires on residential properties occurred because of Christmas trees stored on the property, the report indicates. Two-thirds of these fires occurred in January, with 64 percent of them being set intentionally. This suggests that discarded Christmas trees may be an attractive target for arsonists. But, arson concerns are not an excuse to leave your tree up after the holidays. According to the NFPA, even a wellwatered tree should be taken down within four weeks of being brought into the home. If you decorated your real tree right after Thanksgiving, it should be discarded the week after Christmas, not New Year’s Day. This is because by the end of the holiday season, Christmas trees are extremely dry, and present a heightened fire hazard.•

MARRIED COUPLE AS SANTA & MRS. CLAUS FOR THE HOLIDAYS ARTICLE & PHOTOS BY ZACH MCKNIGHT

C

arl and Anne Burke might be your average retired couple during normal times of the year, but every holiday season, they dust off their Christmas gear and dress up as Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Going into 22 seasons, Carl taught at Hargrave for 34 years, teaching chemistry and physics as well as being chairman of the science department. After retiring in 1999, he bought himself a Harley motorcycle as a retirement present. However, it didn’t last because as he was riding, he hit some gravel, dropped the bike and broke his foot and elbow. It would lead to something else, however. After rehab, everybody was saying, “you look more like Santa everyday.” because of how he was walking. So, he went to a costume shop and rented a Santa outfit, and it grew and grew. Anne was a music teacher with Pittsylvania County schools for 25 years before retiring in 2001, two years after Carl. Becoming a professional Santa

isn’t as easy as many would think, however. According to Carl, you have to train a lot, go through background checks and other stuff. “It is very complicated. I belong to the International Brotherhood of Real Bearded Santa’s,” he said. Carl shared he has done the Chatham Christmas parade for a long time and made some funny experiences in that time. He also shared he is doing an event in the River District for the first Saturday in December where they sit on a bench, and other people take pictures. He explains how people know where he is going to be. “COVID shut everything down and people are just getting back out. I don’t have a website, everything is word of mouth. We help businesses locally.” Carl shared what makes dressing up worth it every year. “Being with the children and seeing the smiles,” he said. “Mrs. Claus (Anne) has been a real asset since they’ll go to her sometimes.” Carl shared one experience

that sticks out above the rest. “We like to work with special needs children as much as possible. At the Danville Science Center, there was a little girl that was nonverbal and couldn’t talk. She communicated through hand gestures and eye blinks. She smiled all the time. She had her two brothers that were right there with her. Just to see the mother and her expression all the way from Martinsville, that was an outstanding event.” Carl and Anne have also done Christmas Stories in churches to promote the real meaning of Christmas as well as for a number of years visiting hospice in Danville and give them a Gideon testament and sing. For Carl and Anne, they’ll be looking to continue doing what they have been doing. “We used to do Toys for Tots; we had many costumes. But people have been very appreciative of what we’ve done. It’s been so worth it,” Carl said.•
