A
wide range of ciders and a warm, rustic ambiance are just a small part of the attraction of Bold Rock Cidery and Taproom in Nelson County. Located on Rt. 151 in Nelson County, Bold Rock’s Nellysford location is just under two hours away from Danville and roughly one hour and fifteen minutes from Lynchburg. The Nellysford Cidery and Tap Room provides a major attraction for residents of Southern and Central Virginia, as Bold Rock became the largest independently-owned cidery in the country in 2017, and has won hundreds of awards since the company first started selling cider in 2012. 8 | DISCOVER M AGAZINE | SOUTHSIDE
Concord resident Chuck McKee has been coming to Bold Rock for years. “The atmosphere is great for just relaxing and enjoying family and friends. And we’ve even had a bachelor’s party here,” he said. “It’s a good time and kind of low key, but a good atmosphere.” The Nellysford cidery is one of Bold Rock’s five locations. The cider barn on site serves as a tap room for guests, and is known as the “Chapel of Apple.” Built with 600 reclaimed oak beams, the spacious facility has a bar, souvenir and drink shop, patio, fire pit and touring areas for guests to learn
Nellysford location’s greeter each time she visits, and also likes the location’s lodge-style facility. “It’s just beautiful all the way around,” she said. She said she thinks the crispness of Bold Rock’s ciders pairs especially well with crisp fall air. Bold Rock’s hard ciders include a classic apple flavor, pear, blackberry, pineapple, premium and vintage dry ciders, a rotating selection of seasonal ciders and more. Bold Rock’s small batch selection includes Roast, a cold brewed, medium roast coffee infused hard cider and Pearadise IPA, made with pears, apples and ekuanot hops with tropical floral notes of passion fruit and pineapple. Bold Rock’s craft food menu includes various appetizers, sandwiches and burgers. Bold Rock also offers alcoholic teas and lemonades and hard seltzers with flavors like grapefruit and cucumber melon. “Everybody can find something that they like from Bold Rock,” McKee said.•
Bold Rock’s Nellysford tap room is a little over an hour’s drive from Lynchburg. about the cider-making process. Bold Rock has steadily expanded since it was founded nine years ago. In 2010, John Washburn, a farm owner in Virginia, reached out to New Zealand cider maker Brian Shanks to see if the pair could make cider together. The company’s first location was established in Nellysford in 2011. Bold Rock began selling cider in 2012, and in its first year alone sold 48,000 cases of cider in Virginia, six times more than expected, according to the company’s website. The company continued marking milestones, like expanding distribution to 10 states in its first four years, opening locations in Mills River, North Carolina, Charlottesville and Asheville, North Carolina and launching new products like their ready-to-drink craft cocktails, including the Bold Fashioned, a canned cocktail made with premium American Whiskey. Now a part of the Artisanal Brewing Ventures family of brands, a designation that has offered much wider distribution than before, Bold Rock has maintained a certain amount of personal charm in the eyes of its customers. s autumn winds down into winter and the trees become bare, the waterfront resort of Lake Gaston offers a front row seat to see the seasons change. At Lake Gaston Resort, one can become a member of The Club and experience bringing a peace which stems from being surrounded by natural beauty. Director of Lake Gaston Resort Operations, Missy House, describes The Club further. “We are a private membership resort,” she said. “We offer the experience of home away from home on Lake Gaston.” According to House, the idea of home comes from a freedom to do many different things. “We have a lot of amenities that our members can enjoy,” she said. There are all sorts of activates for people of all ages to enjoy. “For the resort as a whole, it is a family experience,” she said. “We have activities for kids and adults year round.” “We have a ten-lane bowling alley, restaurants, indoor and outdoor pool, a marina and much more,” House said. The resort itself can arguably be equated a cozy small American town. The resort is a place for members and guests to have space to breath, but also have space to explore for themselves. “Our purpose – our goal is to be able to provide somewhere 10 | DISCOVER MAGAZINE | SOUTHSIDE
for members to experience the lake and enjoy themselves while they’re here,” House said. House attributes the resorts success to its location. “We are on the lake. We have plenty of shoreline around the facility,” she said. “If you haven’t been here, you are definitely missing out. It’s a beautiful location.” If thinking about visiting Lake Gaston, then be sure to book ahead. The resort is often busy. “From May to September is our busiest season. But I will say our busiest holiday is Halloween,” House said. “[It would be best to book] well in advanced. Mainly because we book up in the summer. Our members can make reservations one year out. So, most of them try to book up for vacations and the holidays.” Whatever effort it takes to go to Lake Gaston will be well worth it, according to House. “Once you come out to Lake Gaston Resort you are going to feel that home away from home experience and all the amenities that the resort offers is going to make you want to stay here. You’re going to want to become a member.” House doesn’t emptily praise The Club at Lake Gaston Resort, she herself has a deep history with the resort “When this resort used to be open to the public… I spent a lot of time here as a teenager,” she said “Shortly after it became a
membership resort I came to work in the reservations office. I was young, I was eighteen.” These many experiences within what has now become The Lake Gaston Resort has been impactful in House’s life. “I love this place. I absolutely love this resort,” she said. “Matter of fact, me and my husband had our wedding in the club house. It’s a multimillion dollar, nice – beautiful club house. Not only do I enjoy working here, and have worked here for twenty years, I just love the memories that have been made here.” For House, her aim is to create a place where others can feel the sense of love at Lake Gaston as she does. “That the goal is for our members not only to enjoy themselves, but to make memories. Have you wondered how some of your favorite foods around the holidays became traditions? Here are seven of the most notable to Virginia and the south.

The origins of country ham can be traced back to 12th century China when General Zong Ze is credited with popularizing dry-cured ham. Jinhua becomes the epicenter of an Eastern Ham tradition. In 1607, English colonists and their pigs settled in Jamestown, Virginia and combined Native American and European techniques to preserve their hams. Due to the latitude placement of Jamestown, it was considered the Ham Belt, a strip of climate zones including Western Europe and southeastern China conducive to preserving meat.
Jowl is the “cheek” of a pig. It taste is similar to thick cut bacon. On New Years Day, hog jowls are traditionally eaten in the south to ensure health, prosperity and progress. Plus, in the south and other poor areas, pigs were considered symbolic of both health and wealth. Plus, in the winter, hog jowl stores well for long times.

Virginia style barbecue can be traced back to colonists and slaves. Joe Haynes, publisher of Virginia Barbecue: A History, says Southern barbecue got its start in Virginia, when English colonists and African-American slaves added their own seasonings to an indigenous Powhatan method of slow-cooking meat on wooden platforms called hurdles positioned over coals.

Fried Green Tomatoe
Fried green tomatoes was brought to the US in the 19th century by Jewish immigrants and later appeared in Northeastern and Midwestern cookbooks. Fried green tomatoes only became popular in the South after the release of the Fried Green Tomatoes movie and book duo featuring this dish at the Whistle Stop Café.
Sweet Potato Pie
This dessert has been a staple of African-American communities since the 16th century. Europeans introduced Africans to pumpkin pie when said people traveled to West Africa. They loved it, but because of the crops they had on hand, they used sweet potatoes instead.
Cranberry Sauce
This popular side dish can be traced back to the original Thanksgiving feast, as Native Americans have been known to use cranberries not only to eat but also to use them as a natural dye for clothing. Canned cranberry sauce did not come until much later, however.

Cider was once the national beverage of America. Massachusetts’s colonists in 1767 drank about 35 gallons per person

he Danville Regional Airport held an open house on Saturday for future and aspiring aviation personnel. Director of Transportation Marc Adelman said last open house in 2019, 200 kids registered, but due to many not showing up, but there were 135 who attended. The airport did not hold one in 2020 due to COVID. This year, Adelman said they were fortunate to hold it this year at all, but there were restrictions including masks, temperature checks and a limit of 86 spots open. Another one is only one kid was allowed with the pilots at a given time. “Only if they were siblings were they allowed to fly together,” Adelman said. In addition to free flights, there were three tours going on. One was sponsored by Averett University, and it was a tour of the flight center. The second was part of the Civil Air Patrol, and the third was a tour of the airport’s Operations Tower. The Danville Science Center gave demonstrations concepts of flight including lift, drag, thrust and rocket and rotary wing design. Adelman gave what he hopes the open house will convey. “I hope this is a special experience for the children to be exposed to aviation to become a pilot, airport manager or student at Averett.
