Imagine you and your spouse receiving a gift on your wedding day that can improve both your mental and physical well-being for the remainder of your lives together. This gift would not only have research to support that it promotes lifelong mental health and reduces overall stress, but it also has the ability to lead to more robust cardiovascular health, including lower blood pressure, over your life span. Whether your ceremony is large or small, this gift will be surrounding you throughout your special day, and is one of the most lasting treasures you’ll move forward with on your journey together. It’s your support system, and research has shown it to provide all of the benefits above and more. While your wedding day and the events leading up to it will undoubtedly be filled with countless details that reflect your personalities, hopes, and desires, they likely wouldn’t hold nearly as much value if you weren’t able to celebrate them with your favorite people. ou and your spouse will look back fondly on the fun and festivities for many years to come, but when it comes to getting through those years, the support system you foster together will play an invaluable role in both celebrating your highest points and helping you through challenging times. With so much to be grateful for on your special day, remembering to cherish and hold space for these connections could be the greatest investment you’ll ever make together.

Vendors may be in the background during a wedding, but the roles they play are vital to making ceremonies and receptions memorable for couples and their guests. It’s customary to tip wedding vendors who provide great service. Creative Solutions to Wedding Planning Commitments are stronger at the Lake.
BY CATHERINE MCLAUGHLIN FOR THE LACONIA DAILY SUN
Though the upcoming weddings season is slated to be one of the busiest on record in the akes egion, couples and planners must still navigate the financial, logistical, and emotional challenges of organizing a wedding during . a pandemic. ccording to wedding planner Sherri Collis, owner of Creations by Collis, the early days of pandemic weddings had a clinical feel to them. Though there remain high levels of uncertainty in the planning process, there were more unknowns around how to hold a large event safely in previous years, and it took time for a system balancing state restrictions with the policies of vendors and the preferences of the couples to take shape. lanners, helping couples find and make a contract with the right vendor for their needs, found themselves at the center of that. Now that pandemic risk management is more ingrained and habitual for wedding vendors, staff, guests, and couples alike, weddings are able to have a relaxed and normal atmosphere. The progression of the pandemic also affected the way couples participated in the planning process. In Collis’ experience, couples wanted to be more hands-on in the planning process during the earlier stages of the pandemic. I think they liked the feeling of having things within their control, Collis said. Because everything else going on felt so uncontrolled. These days, Collis said, it is the opposite. er clients enjoy having a hands-off experience and being able to enjoy their event without being too weighed down by the details. It was just an exhaustion with lockdown, I think, Collis said. eople have a new appreciation for their freedom. Give Your Wedding a Modern Touch
No two weddings are the same. Some couples go to great lengths to personalize their weddings, while others make a few minor tweaks to traditional components to make ceremonies and receptions more reflective of their style and the sentiments they hope to convey. Embracing modern trends is one way couples have looked to set their weddings apart from traditional ceremonies. There are no rules governing weddings, and that affords couples certain freedoms as they seek to incorporate a modern sensibility into the festivities. For example, couples can modernize certain components of their weddings while remaining loyal to more traditional elements, or they can fully embrace a modern aesthetic. That choice of how modern to make a wedding is up to the couple tying the knot, but the following are some ways to give weddings a modern touch. • Leave a small carbon footprint. Eco-conscious couples can embrace an environmentalist ethos when planning their weddings by doing everything they can to eliminate waste and promote conservation. Send electronic invitations and save-the-date cards in lieu of paper alternatives and choose a reception venue that serves only locally sourced food and beverages. In lieu of wedding favors, which tend to be individually wrapped, make a donation in guests’ names to a local environmental group and share that information with loved ones. When picking a hotel for guests, find lodging that incorporates sustainability into its day-to-day operations. • Retire certain traditions. Couples need not feel pres-
Weddings
sured to incorporate traditions that no longer reflect modern sensibilities. It’s up to couples to determine which traditions to retire, but customs like the garter toss and bouquet toss may no longer resonate with modern couples or their guests. In addition, brides who want to be walked down the aisle by both of their parents, as opposed to just their father, should not hesitate to do so. • Look for a modern venue. One of the most awe-inspiring ways to give a wedding a modern touch is to choose a venue that reflects a modern aesthetic. Vaulted ceilings, white walls and floor-to-ceiling windows can create a clean, modern feel. Outdoor ceremonies also can create a modern ambiance. • Adjust your attire. Black tuxedos and white wedding dresses are among the first things to come to mind when imagining traditional weddings. Couples can stay formal but embrace a more modern look by choosing more colorful tuxes for grooms and groomsmen and picking a wedding gown with a flair of color. Brides also can allow bridesmaids to pick their own bridesmaid dresses to expand the modern look even further. There’s no shortage of ways for couples to give their weddings a modern touch. — Metro

Sometimes people are glad to have a reason to reduce their numbers, said ary nne Baron, owner of Birch ill Farm in ilford. In the current environment, many couples are motivated to go ahead with their wedding, even if not everyone can be there and if they must make some small sacrifices to make their wedding happen. Conversely, the inability for specific people, such as members of the wedding party and close family members, to be at the wedding is the most common reason that post-shutdown weddings are postponed. Tara Shore, who works with couples at the Belknap ill, has committed to working closely with every couple who delays their celebration to make sure everyone gets a new date. Nevertheless, for Shore, the most heartbreaking and difficult conversations she has with couples are those surrounding what to do when a parent or best friend is unable to be there. llison Brown, who grew up in
eredith, became engaged in . She and her fianc waited to plan their wedding, hoping that they would be able to celebrate in a post-pandemic world. We wanted COVI to be over with, Brown said. nd we did our planning for everything to be normal. For Brown, the continuing, if manageable, risks of the pandemic are disappointing. But, she said, she wants her guests to have options to participate in a way that makes them comfortable. We’re pretty laid back about it. Illness risks are not the only pandemic-related challenge posed to couples. The pent-up urge to get married, among young couples now means that vendors are more in demand than ever, Collis said. Because of this demand, price increases, and staffing shortages, this means that the cost of getting married is also at its highest ever. Caitlin ouston of ilford, who became engaged last month, said that even in the early stages of the planning process, the quotes she was getting from vendors were far higher
than she anticipated. She said she is more concerned about availability than the pandemic. ouston said it is daunting, both from a financial and pandemic-related standpoint, to plan a wedding with so much uncertainty in the future. nything could happen to complicate plans. espite this, ouston said she would rather make her wedding more intimate than put it off due to either availability or the pandemic. No matter what happens, it’s still your day, she said. Brown also said that she keeps in mind the importance of celebrating her nuptials no matter their form. Whatever happens, happens, she said. t the end of the day, Sam and I are getting married, and that’s really all I care about.

BY JANICE BEETLE FOR THE LACONIA DAILY SUN
TAMWORTH — Whiteface Hollow in Tamworth is a perfect venue for brides and grooms who want to hike and enjoy nature by day and then watch the sun set behind the mountains and over the pond as they dine in rustic elegance. “It’s a very relaxing place,” said John Ferreira, who developed and runs the breath-taking venue with his wife, Jennifer. In addition to its natural beauty and 1820s charm, Whiteface Hollow offers couples the chance for an extended stay with friends and family, with multiple indoor and outdoor settings for the rehearsal dinner, brunch and everyday relaxation. “We’re seeing people come from many parts of the northeast,” says Jennifer. “There’s a special connection to this beautiful area. Many want to get away and get back to nature, back to New Hampshire and the mountains and lakes.” The Ferreiras are retired and live Page 18 — Lakes to Mountains Weddings 2022
in Moultonborough. They purchased the 25-acre property in 2016 and spent a year applying their sensibilities as well as their collective knowledge of business and customer engagement. “Providing that customer experience is something that has been very important to us,” Jennifer said. “We had a vision of being able to offer a beautiful premise with really wonderful vistas of the mountains here. We wanted to share that.” The property is home to a farmhouse that sleeps 12, a 200-yearold barn that accommodates 200 guests—which the Ferreiras have painstakingly restored—and the brand-new winery that seats 40. The wine tasting room is used as one of the many gathering spots for brides and grooms, and when the first batches of vino are ready to be unveiled, the room will open to the public, when no private events are scheduled. Outdoors, the property features patios and green spaces that also can be used for cocktail parties and dining. “Couples can have different events on site during their extended
stay without having their guests feel like they’re always in the same place,” John says. Another plus for Whiteface Hollow is it hosts only one wedding per weekend. “Brides and grooms have the entire property,” John said. And the couple created a three-mile nature trail on the expansive grounds to add to guests’ enjoyment. “A lot of our guests get good use out of that,” John says. Guests at Whiteface Hollow enjoy the quiet of the dead-end road, the on-site vineyard, spectacular sunsets and views of dozens of peaks, including Mount Whiteface—which gave the place its name. “The lead up to a wedding can be chaotic,” John says. “Our venue offers a great location and an extended period to relax before the wedding, to decompress and have fun with that immediate group of people and really take the edge off and fully enjoy things, and to get to do that in an outstanding beautiful scenic environment that is classic and reminiscent of New Hampshire.”

Congratulations! Getting married is a wonderful milestone in life. Getting ready for a wedding can be full of many anxiety provoking issues — but there is one thing that doesn’t have to be stressful: your pre-wedding beauty regimen. There are now NUNEZ more minimally invasive beauty treatments than ever to help you look and feel your very best on your wedding day, and beyond. When planning your dream wedding make sure you know how long it will take to achieve the look you want for your special day. Many brides don’t realize it can take months for procedures like photofacials,
laser hair removal and microneedling to take effect. In an ideal world, I would have people come in as early as one year before their wedding to create a plan — that way we can discuss what you’d like to achieve and work together to ensure that you will have the best results on the day. Ultimately, more time equals way more options for you, not only just in terms of procedures, but, importantly, in terms of downtime and cost. Visit Jennifer Nunez at Lakes Cosmetic Institute in Gilford to learn what you need to know to be anxiety-free for this part of your preparations.

Wedding Planners and Venues Now Ready for Anything BY CATHERINE MCLAUGHLIN FOR THE LACONIA DAILY SUN
Thanks to now-established adaptations to ongoing pandemic risks, preparations by local businesses for the upcoming wedding season are full steam ahead. Many vendors are the busiest they have ever been, still catching up from the postponements of the 2020 season and facing additional demand increases from couples who became engaged during the pandemic. “By the 2021 season people were itching to get out there, to get married,” said Tara Shore, program and operations manager of the Belknap Mill. The Mill, whose indoor space holds about 120 people
at full capacity, saw all but a small handful of its scheduled weddings for 2020 postponed by couples until 2021. After managing those reschedules with new bookings last season, Shore said that this year, “It feels like we’re back in a normal pattern.” Mary Anne Baron, owner of Birch Hill Farm in Gilford, said that the upcoming wedding season feels like it will be more positive and celebratory than ever. “It’s almost like the sky has cleared,” Baron said. Birch Hill, from the first weddings it hosted during the pandemic, was able to utilize its large barn and tent spaces to socially distance guests and provide an outdoor setting. Because of this, Baron said, her venue was not as impacted by delays see VENUES page 26

VENUES from page 24 and cancellations as some others. What a wedding these days actually looks like, and how tight its restrictions are, is a balance between the vision of the couple and the policies of the businesses serving them, from venues to caterers to shuttle services to musicians. Often, COVID precautions are written into the contractual agreements couples make when they book a vendor. Many venues will implement whatever accommodations and precautions couples wish to have at their wedding in addition to minimum state guidelines for large events. Having established and smooth, but also flexible, safety provisions not only helps keep guests and staff alike protected but also benefits the planning process for clients. When venues have clear communication with couples and standard practices, it can help relieve stress on couples about how to make their event safe and enjoyable. “Outside of any mandates, we work closely with our guests to understand their needs on an individual event level,” said Joe Oullette, Director of Sales and Marketing at Mill Falls in Meredith in an email to the Laconia Daily Sun. “It’s our responsibility to act as a rudder for their event. By remaining consistent with our policies and procedures and remaining in lockstep with CDC guidelines, we are best able to calm [their] concerns.” Birch Hill Farm takes a similar approach. It can be easy, Baron said, for couples to get caught up in things out of their control. Birch Hill is prepared to make any accommodations requested, Baron said, but they also seek to have smooth-running and practiced precautions to “take that challenge away from [couples]” and allow them to focus on other things.
Alongside the success of these adaptations, many wedding-oriented businesses continue to face financial burdens related to the pandemic. Wedding planner Sherri Collis, owner of Events by Collis, said that the costs of masks, sanitizing stations, and other protections for staff often fall on planners or vendors, adding to their overhead expenses. Additionally, contracts made between couples and vendors a year ago are not readjusted for rising costs of materials, further exacerbating the problem. When many venues made sure that all couples who had to reschedule their wedding still got a date, those dates were no longer available to new couples looking to book their wedding. Shore said she was proud that her venue was able to do right by all their couples, but, at the same time, “that’s still lost business for us.” Rising cases mean that already-present staffing shortages in the service industry are exacerbated, as more and more people become sick and must isolate. Looking forward, even though venues feel like they are trending towards a sense of normalcy in their event planning, the future continues to be occupied by challenges posed by the pandemic — including everything from changes to the economy to new variants and beyond. “I honestly don’t think anything surprises us anymore,” said Jennifer Tower Whitfield, director of sales for the Common Man. Tower Whitfield said that, after weathering several stages of the pandemic, flexibility and communication drive how they work with couples to manage pandemic risks. Oullette expressed a similar outlook at Mill Falls. “If we’ve learned anything from this, it’s that you have to be ready, willing and able to shift at a moment’s notice,” Oullette said. “Nowadays, you just have to be prepared to hit the curve.”

BY JANICE BEETLE FOR THE LACONIA DAILY SUN
During the pandemic, brides and grooms have been all about outdoor venues, and in a scenic state like New Hampshire, they are plentiful. Spots like Whiteface Hollow in Tamworth, ColdSpring Farm in Alton Bay, Castle in the Clouds in Moultonborough, Belknap Mill in Laconia, Currier Hill Farm in Loudon and The Barn at Whitney’s Inn in Jackson have all reported an uptick in requests for outdoor weddings. This has prompted many to create more natural spaces. “I love the outdoor trend,” said Diane Loudon, owner of ColdSpring Farm, noting her family-owned venue will be constructing more spaces to guard against the weather but still leave you feeling like you’re outdoors. She noted, “There’s nothing more elegant than nature.” Last season, a couple from Austin, Texas, held their wedding at ColdSpring Farm and arranged for their bridal party to camp out on the venue’s 300-acre property for the week preceding the wedding. “This was one of our most elegant weddings this year,” Loudon said. “We think this is going to be something that our couples want to enjoy more and more—a true break from the daily grind, and, luckily, we can provide it.” Tara Shore, programs and operations manager at Belknap Mill, said her organization will unveil the Powerhouse Patio in spring 2022 at the back of the building, Page 30 — Lakes to Mountains Weddings 2022
just outside the Powerhouse and adjacent to Rotary Park. “It will be an ideal space for outdoor cocktail receptions following ceremonies at the gazebo or the perfect space for a small outdoor wedding,” she said. Venue owners also said that in the past few years, since COVID-19 was unleashed on the world, they are seeing couples opting for smaller weddings. Charles Clark, executive director of Castle in the Clouds, said, “Some people have also been asking about offering a way for some guests to observe their wedding virtually, although we have not implemented that as an option yet.” At The Barn at Whitney’s Inn, co-owners Don and Maria Bilger have added farm-to-table menu selections for weddings as an attraction. Don noted that they are seeing couples who have already been married holding wedding celebrations at The Barn. With its 25-acre property, multiple settings and patios and greenways, Whiteface Hollow has been a popular wedding space. “We’re certainly seeing an uptick in inquiries,” said John Ferreira, who co-owns the venue with his wife, Jennifer. “We had an extremely successful 2021. We will have an even more successful 2022, with bookings into 2023 and ’24.” Many venues are filling up for 2022, so if you’re planning to take the leap, and you want to be in the great out of doors, it’s time to act! TIPPING from page 8 band playing can tip between $25 and $35 per musician, while DJs generally receive a tip between $50 and $150. • Drivers: Many transportation firms also include gratuities in their contracts, so couples should check to see if they’ve already tipped limo or bus drivers before paying them a little extra. If the tip is not included and the drivers arrive on time and get guests to the wedding on time, then a tip that’s between 15 and 20 percent of the total bill is standard. • Delivery personnel: Individuals who deliver items like cakes and flowers are typically given a gratuity upon delivery. A tip between $5 and $10 per person is standard, though individuals who deliver items like tables, chairs and portable restroom facilities and then set those items up may be deserving of a little extra. • Officiants: Officiants who are affiliated with a church or synagogue where the ceremony will take place are not typically given a gratuity. However, The Knot notes that a donation to the place of worship between $100 and $500 is standard. Couples who still want to give the officiant a little extra can tip between $50 and $100. Independent officiants who receive fees directly from the couple need not be tipped. These figures can serve as guidelines, but couples also can give a little extra if they feel their vendors have gone above and beyond. — Metro (Courtesy photo/Mitch & Rachel Visuals)
