Base H story Whiteman has a history dating back to the years during World War . irst, the base is named in honor of 2nd t. George A. Whiteman, a Sedalia native who was one of the rst American airmen killed in combat during World War , when his P-40 ghter, the ucky Me, was shot down during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. n October 19 , members of the wing saw the base name change to Whiteman A , in honor of 2nd t. Whiteman. Second, .S. Army Air Corps of cials selected the current site of the base to be the home of Sedalia Army Air ield in 1942. he base was one of eight sites dedicated to training glider pilots speci cally, those ying the Waco CG-4A for combat missions performed by roop Carrier Command. or a brief time following the end of World War , the air eld remained in service as an operational location for Army Air orce C-46 and C-47 transports. n December 1947, the base was placed on inactive status and the

name changed in June 1948 to Sedalia Air orce Au iliary ield. After initially being considered as a possible site for the Air orce Academy, in August 19 1, Strategic Air Command selected the base to be the site of one of its new bombardment wings. he base was re-designated Sedalia Air orce ase, and in October 19 2, SAC activated the 340th ombardment Wing with both -47 Stratojet bombers and KC-97 Stratotanker air refueling aircraft assigned. As -47s were phased out of the .S. Air orce in the early 1960s, Whiteman A s mission shifted from aircraft to the Minuteman intercontinental ballistic missile. n June 1961, of cials selected the base to become the command s fourth Minuteman missile wing, the 3 1st Strategic Missile Wing. he 340th was inactivated in September 1963, and the missile wing went on full operational alert in June 1964. n the late 1980s, the 3 1st elded the rst female Minuteman missile crew, the rst male and female Minuteman crew, and the rst s uadron commander to pull alert in the Minuteman system. or more information, visit Whiteman A at www.whiteman.af.mil.

HISTORY & HERITAGE

Warrensburg s e citing future remains anchored to its colorful western frontier past. he town s history dates to 1833 when Martin Warren, American evolutionary War soldier, and blacksmith arrived from Kentucky and settled along the Osage ndian rail at College and Gay streets. n 1834, the County of Johnson was designated, and the town of Columbus was the center of county government until 1836. n 1838, a group of early Missouri leaders including Daniel Morgan oone, son of Daniel oone, chose the site for the county courthouse in the growing community that was to become the City of Warrensburg. he county court commissioned the building of the courthouse in that same year, and it took four years to complete. ncorporation as a city came in 18 , and the railroad arrived July 4, 1864, after it had stopped at Sedalia during the Civil War. A thriving new commercial district sprouted along the tracks, ve blocks southeast of the original town or town s uare , and nearby sandstone uarries helped spur growth. he arlow Sanderson Overland Mail company started here. Established by ermont men Jared . Sanderson and radley arlow during the Civil War, the arlow-Sanderson Overland Mail Company rst carried the mail and operated a stage line

between Sedalia and Warrensburg, Missouri. y 1863, was also operating a line from Kansas City, Missouri, to ort Scott, Kansas. n 1866, they began to e pand westward and transferred their head uarters from Kansas City to Junction City, Colorado. y 1867, the two entrepreneurs had established a route from Missouri to California over the Santa e rail and changed the name to the arlow and Sanderson Company. One of the city parks, located in the historic area, has been restored and is today named lind oone Park. he completed restoration includes a ga ebo for public musical events, a picnic area, and a statue of lind oone. John William lind oone May 17, 1864 Oct. 4, 1927 was a highly successful American pianist and composer of ragtime music, giving over 7,200 concerts in North America. he JCHS is also hoping to restore the Old Davis Store, established in 189 , and is located across the street from the Old Courthouse and the only historic commercial building left in the area. Old Drum, a hound dog, was shot dead in 1869 by Samuel Dick erguson, nephew and ward of eonidas Hornsby, an irate neighbor who thought Drum had been killing his sheep and is one of the most celebrated gures from Warrens-

burg s past. When .S. Senator-to-be George Graham est delivered his eulogy to the dog in 1870 in a Johnson County courtroom, he had no idea his words would make him famous. His words, coining the phrase Man s best friend is his dog, uickly won him fame across Missouri and beyond. est made the speech while arguing in court on behalf of Charles urden, whose favorite dog was shot by the ward of eonidas Hornsby. urden sued and the case eventually wound up in the Missouri Supreme Court where the plaintiff was awarded 0. he trial advanced est s political career, and in 19 8 his ribute to a Dog was cast in bron e beneath the statue of Old Drum on the courthouse lawn. est s eulogy has won world fame and has been cited as one of the greatest speeches given during the 19th-century. he story of Old Drum is known and loved the world over. Preserving our past and sharing this for our community is a prime objective for the volunteer-based Johnson County Missouri Historical Society and sister organi ation, he West Central Missouri Genealogical Society, both supported by the generosity of donors and its members. ou can follow the JCHS at www.facebook. com jocomohistory.

THE ORIGIN OF MAN’S BEST FRIEND By

eor e raha est Gentlemen of the jury: he best friend a man has in this world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. hose who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name, may become traitors to their faith. he money that a man has, he may lose. t ies away from him, perhaps when he needs it the most. A man s reputation may be sacriced in a moment of ill considered action. he people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us may be the rst to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads. he one absolutely unsel sh friend that a man can have in this sel sh world, the one that never deserts him, and the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog. Gentlemen of the jury: A man s dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold

ground, when the wintry winds blow and the snow drives ercely, if only he may be near his master s side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer, he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens. f fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard against danger, to ght against his enemies, and when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death.
