WELCOME TO THE RANCH HAND BREAKFAST Enjoy an authentic cowboy breakfast on the legendary King Ranch

F

or more than over 30 years, the legendary and historic King Ranch has hosted the annual Ranch Hand Breakfast.

It is one of the most special events of the year in Kingsville, as it is the only time of the year the general public is allowed to drive inside the gates of the historic King Ranch.

At the Ranch Hand Breakfast, visitors and locals alike will enjoy an authentic cowboy breakfast featuring everything from eggs, sausage, and refried beans to biscuits and gravy and homemade tortillas. The year 2021 will be the 30th Annual Ranch Hand Breakfast, even though the first event was held in 1990. Last year, due to the COVID situation, the Ranch Hand Breakfast was postponed out of a concern for public health and safety. This year, however, the excitement and enthusiasm has returned as the Ranch gears up for hosting the annual breakfast at the King Ranch arena on Saturday, November 20 from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The Ranch Hand Breakfast is always held on the Saturday before Thanksgiving weekend, with all the proceeds going to the La Posada de Kingsville illuminated holiday parade, “I firmly believe there is a lot more excitement this year, both on the Ranch and in the community, for holding the Ranch Hand Breakfast,” said Bob Cleek, the area manager for the King Ranch. “With us having to postpone last year’s event due to the pandemic, well it was very disheartening to everybody here. So yes, I believe everyone is excited for the return and to host this year’s event.”

Preparation for the event begins months in advance of the annual extravaganza, as the Ranch works with numerous organizations and volunteers in order to prepare for all the events that are held in the morning.

“In the past, we have had hundreds of volunteers from such organizations and entities as Naval Air Station-Kingsville, Texas A & M-Kingsville, the Chamber of Commerce, all the local school districts, various service groups and regular volunteers who come from around the community to help serve everybody that comes. “Not only do we need volunteers to serve the people who attend the Ranch Hand Breakfast, but we also have to coordinate and plan the other activities that are going on at the Ranch while the Breakfast is underway.”

According to Cleek, people who attend the event can expect to see pan de campo demonstrations, cowboy storytelling, cowboy poetry and readings, a team-roping competition at the arena, and authentic cowboy cooking demonstrations.

“We’ve already begun to clear the fields and areas where everyone will park, and we expect ta great crowd to come to the Breakfast.”

Cleek said up to 6,000 people could attend this year’s event, but he did offer a special word of advice.

“I strongly advise people to get here early, as the crowds come early and we want to make sure everyone gets on the property and enjoys all there is to offer here during the event,” Cleek said.

Tickets to purchase a plate of the authentic cowboy breakfast are $6 a plate, but children the 3 and under are free.

There is another wonderful side to the Ranch Hand Breakfast, as all the proceeds from the event will benefit La Posada de Kingsville held in historic downtown Kingsville.

Tickets will be available the day of the event at the Ranch for purchase, but early birds can pick theirs up at the Kingsville Visitors Center, the King Ranch Visitor Center, the King Ranch Saddle Shop and the King Ranch Museum. Cleek also invited all visitors to attend the other activities being held in Kingsville after the Ranch Hand Breakfast is over. Guests are also able to cater a free shuttle to the breakfast from the 1904 Train Depot downtown. Shuttle service begins at 7 a.m. Breakfast tickets can be purchased at the Train Depot Saturday morning.

Ranch Hand Weekend Festival is packed with fun!

What a weekend we have in store for you!

The 30th annual Ranch Hand Breakfast has evolved into a weekend full of fun-filled activities, shopping, dancing and live music.

“It’s the best weekend to come to Kingsville because there’s so much going on,” said Janine Reyes, the Director of Tourism for the City of Kingsville. On Friday and Saturday, there will be King Ranch historic tours all day long, Just call (361) 592-8055 for tour times and information.

Beginning on Friday evening, November 19 the Ranch Hand Weekend kicks off with a flurry of activities in historic downtown Kingsville. Beginning at 5 p.m., enjoy the Holiday Sip and Shop Wine Walk. Participants can sample from 18 different wines, five craft beers and a special holiday rum concoction made by our local Wild Horse Distillery while shopping at many of our fine downtown

merchants. Non-Alcoholic Sip & Shop options are available. Non-Alcoholic passports feature at least six sparkling beverage options with a keepsake glow in the dark cup. Both options offer guests opportunities to win great prizes and a passport packed with savings. At the Kleberg Bank, located right across the street from the historic 1904 Train Depot, student art from Texas A&M-Kingsville will be on display.

At 7 p.m., the annual lighting of the Christmas tree takes place and there will be plenty of caroling in this festive atmosphere. On Saturday morning, it’s the 30th annual Ranch Handbreakfast at the historic King Ranch. Starting at 7 a.m. and running until 11 a.m., the Ranch Hand Breakfast is a morning filled with authentic Cowboy breakfast food, roping, and a plethora of other activities on the legendary King Ranch. It is the only time all year that visitors are allowed to drive on King Ranch property. Admission for everyone over 3 years old is just $6 to see and experience an authentic cowboy breakfast and events.

Vendors come from far and wide to attend this festival and there is no shortage of Christmas shopping opportunities!

Country music fills the air Saturday night at the JK Northway Expo Center with the Ranch Hand Weekend Country Concert. This year’s headliner is Grand Ole Opry member Steve Wariner! In his five-decade career, Wariner has released 20 albums, won four GRAMMY Awards and produced many songs that are still fan favorites. Some of his top tracks include “Holes In the Floor of Heaven, Lonely Women Make Good Lovers, Some Fools Never Learn and Two Teardrops.’ Wariner will share the stage with Lauren Corzine and Isaac Jacobs Band who will open the show.

Christmas tree lighting on Friday night A great way to kickoff Ranch Hand Weekend

ne of the things that makes the Ranch Hand Weekend so exciting for adults and children alike is the lighting of the traditional Christmas tree in downtown Kingsville.

The lighting ceremony takes place on Friday evening, November 19 and is held at the 1904 Train Depot Museum. The Train Museum is located at 102 E. Kleberg across the street from the main Kleberg Bank Building and the United States Post Office. Big Frank from K-99 and Katia Uriarte with KRIS 6 News will help kick off the festivities. “This is a great event for our community, because it not only kicks off the celebration for the Ranch Hand Breakfast and Ranch Hand Weekend festivities, but it is also the start of the Christmas season,” said Janine Reyes, Director of Tourism for the City of Kingsville. “I guarantee the festivities, the caroling, live music, the lighting of the tree and street dance will get everybody in the holiday spirit.”

There are lots of goodies and refreshments available at the Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony. There is hot cocoa, coffee and delicious cookies inside the 1904 Train Depot and in the lobby of the Kleberg Bank building. In addition, there will be artwork on display inside the Kleberg Bank lobby created by artists in the senior class at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. For those looking for something a little more festive among the adult crowd, he Holiday Wine Walk Sip & Shop with 18 varieties of wine, an array of craft beer – to include local options from Bray’s Smokehouse the award-winning local Wild Horse Distillery will concoct a special beverage. For those seeking a non-alcoholic option, there will be a variety of sparkling beverages to choose from, complete with a glow-in-the-dark stadium cup. A variety of Food Trucks will also be on hand to keep the hungry satiated with different types of foods and snackables. Downtown merchants will also be getting into the spirit of the evening, as many of the merchants will stay open later than normal to accommodate all of the downtown guests and visitors.” A few years ago, many of our merchants had planned to stay open until 8 pm, but due to the size of the crowd and the festive atmosphere, many stayed open later then that,” said Reyes. KIDS CORRAL

The Kingsville Parks and Recreation Department is a major part of Ranch Hand Weekend, as they host the Kids Corral in historic downtown Kingsville. This family entertainment is provided for kids to have while they celebrate the holiday season.

Co-sponsored by the Healthy Family Event Partners, the Young Performers’ Stage has been a part of the Kids Corral for many years and highlights the talents of young entertainers from Kingsville and surrounding area.

The Sound Services are assisted by Music Time Productions and Rene Canales. Make sure you take the kiddos and stop by the Archery Turkey Shoot.

The cost is only $3.00 for three archery shots at a target.

If you hit the bullseye you get to take a frozen turkey home with you. Right next to the Turkey Shoot is the TPWD Angler Education booth. There you will learn some casting, knot tying and fish identification.

Lowe’s Home Improvement Center staff will be on hand doing succulent planting with kids as well. You can paint a rock and take it home, or leave it somewhere for someone else to enjoy. Four-time GRAMMY winner to play at J.K. Northway

Four-time GRAMMY-Award winner Steve Wariner is the headliner for this year’s 2021 Ranch Hand Weekend concert, and man, has this performer played with--and written for--some great musicians. After starting early in his career with Dottie West and Chet Atkins,Wariner moved out on his own and started climbing toward the top of the various country charts. He has been nominated for over 25 GRAMMY, Academy of Country Music and Country Music Award nominations, including his win in 1987 for “Restless” and vocal event win with Mark O’Connor, Ricky Skaggs, and Vince Gill. Wariner has played with some of the top names in the business, and is a current member of the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. Besides performing with or writing for performers like West, Atkins, Skaggs and Gill, Nicolette Larson, Glen Campbell, Diamond Rio, Brad Paisley, Asleep at the Wheel, and Mark O’Connor among others. Wariner can also boast names like, Nicolette Larson, Garth Brooks, Clint Black, Barbara Mandrell, Glen Campbell, Steve Earle, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams, Jr., Reba McIntyre and a host of other legendary names in the music industry. Through his performances, writing and singing, Wariner was named a member of the Opry in 1996. Steve Wariner is an Indiana native who grew up in Kentucky. His career as an American country music singer, songwriter, guitarist, and record producer is extraordinary. He has released eighteen studio albums and over fifty singles for several different record labels. History records Wariner experienced his greatest chart successes in the 1980s, sending a number of singles into the top ten of the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. He experienced a second wave of success in the late 1990s which was spurred by co-writing the number-one singles “Longneck Bottle” by Garth Brooks and “Nothin’ but the Taillights” by Clint Black.

These songs led to him signing with Capitol Records Nashville and achieving two more gold albums with Burnin’ the Roadhouse Down and Two Teardrops by decade’s end. Ten of Wariner’s singles have reached the number-one position on the Hot Country Songs charts: “All Roads Lead to You”, “Some Fools Never Learn”, “You Can Dream of Me”, “Life’s Highway”, “Small Town Girl”, “The Weekend”, “Lynda”, “Where Did I Go Wrong”, “I Got Dreams”, and “What If I Said” (a duet with Anita Cochran). .

He has also won four Grammy Awards: one for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals, and three for Best Country Instrumental. In addition to these he has won three Country Music Association awards and one Academy of Country Music award, and is a member of the Grand Ole Opry. Wariner’s musical style is defined by his lead guitar work, lyrical content, and stylistic diversity. Twenty albums into his five-decade career, Steve Wariner still has plenty of musical tricks up his sleeve. On All Over The Map, his latest album, his fans will hear him like never before. For the first time, Wariner

displays the astonishing breadth of his talents on one album. All Over The Map, on Wariner’s own SelecTone Records, showcases not only the dazzling, innovative guitar work for which he’s so well known, but his command of other instruments as well. “People know me as an artist and a guitar player, but I don’t think they know the full musician side of me, including playing steel, lap steel, drums and even upright bass,” Wariner says, all of which he tackles on the new set. “This album pulls back all the layers. This album is me. It is what I do,” the four-time GRAMMY Award winner said. “This just shows off everything that I love and what I’m about—not only the writing, but the musicianship and where I come from, my roots and my blood.

This is me right here.” It’s so thoroughly him, that Wariner, an accomplished artist, even painted the cover artwork. Top among Wariner’s collaborators is the late, legendary Merle Haggard. The pair co-wrote heartbreaking, traditional country ballad, “When I Still Mattered To You” in 1996 and Wariner revisited the track after Haggard’s death earlier this year. Forty years after signing his first record deal with RCA, Wariner’s passion for writing, playing and singing music remains undiminished. “I was every bit as enthusiastic about recording this project as I was the very first day I went in with Chet Atkins in 1977 and recorded my first stuff. I still get as excited, especially when the room is full of great players. The joy is in creating for me, and it never goes away.” Wariner will share the stage with Lauren Corzine and Isaac Jacob Band who will open the show. “We started the Ranch Hand Weekend Country Concert in 2018 to keep visitors engaged all weekend long,” said Kingsville Director of Tourism Janine Reyes.

“We’ve seen tremendous success with these events thanks to the strong foundation the Ranch Hand Breakfast has built for decades.”

The Ranch Hand Weekend Country Concert will benefit Toys for Tots of Kleberg and Kenedy Counties.

“These events will help ensure that every child in need in Kleberg and Kenedy County will receive something under the tree on Christmas morning,” said Stephanie Perryman and Rebecca Sanchez who run Toys for Tots. Steve Wariner has donated some autographed lithographs and merchandise that will be raffled off at the concert.

“You just have to feel good about being able to attend a fabulous event that also benefits an awesome cause at the same time,” Reyes said, “everyone is encouraged and invited to attend.” General Admission concert tickets can be purchased on-line. King Ranch Celebration Concert set for November 20th Kingsville Symphony Orchestra announces that artistic director and conductor Dr. Colleen Ferguson will lead the King Ranch Celebration Concert scheduled for Sunday, November 20, 2021, at 3 p.m. in Jones Auditorium on the Texas A&M University-Kingsville Campus.The concert is sponsored by the King Ranch Family Trust. Dr. Ferguson is the assistant professor of strings at TAMUK. She is an active performer and teacher of violin, viola, and orchestral conducting. She holds both a Bachelor’s (2002) and a Master’s (2004) degree in Music Education from The University of Texas at Austin, where she was also a faculty member of the UT Austin String Project. Subsequently, Dr. Ferguson earned both an MM (2012) and DMA (2015) in Violin Performance from the University of Iowa. Dr. Ferguson often performs as an orchestral and chamber musician and has played professionally as a member of several orchestras including the El Paso Symphony (TX), Las Cruces Symphony (NM), Ottumwa Symphony (IA), Orchestra Iowa (IA), and Johnstown Symphony (PA). Additionally, Ferguson has played in the orchestras of Mannheim Steamroller and the Transiberian Orchestra. She has been an active participant at several international music festivals throughout Europe including festivals in the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Russia.

TAMUK Senior Art Exhibit at Kleberg Bank

or almost a decade, the art students at Texas A&M University-Kingsville have produced a wonderful art show on Ranch Hand Weekend.

This year the tradition continues, as approximately 12 different students will be displaying their art in the lobby of the Kleberg Bank on Friday and Saturday, November 19 and 20. It is estimated about 36 different pieces of art will be on display for the public to see. Todd Lucas, Chair of the Art, Communication and Theater Department at TAMUK, said the Ranch Hand Weekend is a teaching lesson for the students in putting on an art show.

“We want them to work together in planning the exhibition so that one piece doesn’t dominate the entire show,” Lucas said. “We want it to be diverse while at the same time have each piece stand out on its own merits. There is an art to it, and it’s a good learning experience for the students who will be getting their Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts.”

In addition to the art exhibition at the Kleberg Bank, Saturday, Nov. 20 will see another art tradition continued as other art students will participate in the Steamroller Relief Art printing. The Steamroller Relief event is on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and will take place at the corner of 7th and Kleberg. “Relief printing has been around for a long, long time,” said Professor Omar Gonzalez. “We take large wood cuts about 32 inches by 48 inches and then ink the cut pieces up. We lay paper over the wood cuts, and then the Steamroller runs over the pieces to create the relief art.’’

De La Rosa. “The steamroller printing is really an event; it is designed to be different to draw attention to the art that is being created,” Gonzalez said. “It is probably the most social of art forms, as it is very labor intensive and there is a lot of collaboration in the community that does this type of art.” As for the art show at the Kleberg Bank, a number of students were interviewed to discuss what they are going to display. Kevin Kaizer, a senior from Kingsville, said he intends to display what he calls “expressionistic” self-portraits done in water colors.

Homer Ramirez, a United States Navy veteran who hails from Bishop, said most of his work will be ceramic.

“I was in the United States Navy and was fascinated with the water and sea creatures,” Ramirez said. “So I’ve developed some underwater creations using earth tones to express myself. It takes about two and a half weeks to do one piece.”

Kaitlynn Garza, from Monte Alto, said she will be displaying some sculptures made out of metal and possibly some ceramic pieces as well. Alexa Ruiz, a senior from San Antonio, intends to show mostly acrylic paintings.

Jason Almaraz from Hebbronville will be displaying contemporary paintings and ceramics. He said most of his inspiration comes from his life experiences, usually people celebrating birthdays or musical experiences.

Kamryn Solres is going to focus on photography. She said her photos deal with people who have suffered loss, and her photography tries to capture how people deal with grief. Isai Garza, who hails from the Rio Grande Valley, deals with portraiture pictures and paintings that memorialize family and friends.

Evan Hernandez from Houston will display portrait paintings and abstracts.

Marissa Gomez from Robstown will be showing her ceramic art.

“I try to be inclusive in my work,” Gomez said. “I’ll have lots of floral pieces in my display.”

Hunter Caroll from Mathis is going to display pen drawings and a painting “because I like the one I have chosen.” Bryson Olivarez from Kingsville will also have work on display involving media, sculptures and ceramics.

“As you can see, the students have put a lot of thought and effort into this so that the exhibition will have a diverse and robust display of various forms of art,” said Lucas. “This is a good event for them as they begin to prepare for their senior exhibition at the BFA show at the Bailey Art Gallery on campus.”

4th Annual Event invades historic downtown Kingsville Roundup Car and Truck Show is Saturday

By Terry Fitzwater Publisher, Kingsville Record The Fourth Annual Ranch Hand Roundup Truck and Car Show will be held on Saturday, November 20 in historic downtown Kingsville. Organizers Tony Morales and Tres Guerrero have put together another great event, featuring at least seven different categories of hot rods, cars, trucks and motorcycles. The event is being put on by the Texas Rides Truck and Car Club.

“We’re excited to be back in downtown Kingsville,” said Tres Guerrero. “We love showing off all of our cars in the historic downtown area, and it looks great to see all of the machines parked there. It’s a must-see for everyone who comes to the King Ranch’s Ranch Hand Breakfast and the festival.” According to Guerrero, more than 60 machines have already signed up for the event, and more are expected on the day of the event.This year’s Ranch Hand Roundup Truck and Car Show will have judging in the following categories: Hot Rods, Classic Cars, Low Riders, Motorcycles, Lifted Trucks, Trucks, Muscle Cars and Best in Show, which will be voted on by participants in the show. “I’m sure we’ll even have some Rat Rods in the show as well,” Guerrero added.

Tony Morales, the vice-president of the Texas Rides Truck and Car club, promises some new surprises.

“We’re going to have a surprise special guest this year at the show,” Morales said. “I’m not going to announce who it is in case something happens, but we do have a surprise guest coming.

“In addition, Billet Pros out of the Rio Grande Valley will be on hand to sell merchandise like wheels, steering wheels, T-shirts, lanyards and a whole bunch of things.”
