T
he Richmond-based Cameron K. Gallagher Foundation hosted its first ever karting event at the VIRginia International Raceway in October. Also called the Speak Up 5K, an annual race in Richmond, the event was inspired by the late Cameron Kathleen Gallagher. She loved the idea of people participating and attending wall with their own story come together for one common goal: to reach that common goal. Plus, she loved the race environment. Tragically, Cameron would pass away from sudden cardiac arrhythmia after running a half marathon on March 16, 2014. She was 16 years old. The event is used to raise awareness for teenage mental health as Gallagher struggled with anxiety and depression. On the foundation’s website, they said most of Cameron’s struggle was done in isolated silence due to the stigma associated with depression and anxiety. Cameron’s mother, Grace, said she used the running to cope and recalled the events of what happened. “She crossed the finish line and fell into mine and my
husband’s arms,” she said. “Once she went down, they tried to get her heart restarted and couldn’t.” Grace said their board member, Sandy Wiggins, saw a similar event in Tampa, and said it would reach a lot of people and bring in a lot of money. Grace went on to say Cameron had five siblings, one sister and four brothers: Andrew, Tyler, Sydney and Mitchell, and explained it was hard when they saw her struggle. Grace said all of Cameron’s siblings wish she were still here, so they could help her. Now, her siblings are involved in spreading the word. Grace said if Cameron were still alive today, she would be blown away by the support. “She would be blown away. There was a time in her life she thought no one cared, and to see all these people come together and support something she struggled with, her heart would be full. The more work we do the more she stays alive.” Professional drivers Patrick Long and Katherine Legge participated in the event as well.•

ince the beginning of the century, Halifax County draws older gentlemen from the region to reignite their flame for baseball by playing in the Old Timer’s League. Spearheaded by Tigue and Kenneth Day, the league hosts several teams of men ages 40 and older to compete in America’s pastime. While COVID-19 has slowed the season down, the league as a whole is still going strong. Junior Hunt stands as a testament of loyalty to the league. “I’ve been playing this kind of ball for 27 years,” Hunt said. “It’s just a lot of fun. That’s what I think about it.” Hunt is a native of Halifax County and loves himself some ball. “If I wasn’t playing it, I would be watching it,” he said. “I 10 | DISCOVER MAGAZINE | SOUTHSIDE
wouldn’t know what to do with myself If I didn’t play.” Manager and player of the blue team, Tim Alderson, himself is a seasoned participant of the Old Timers. “I’ve been playing about eight years, but the league’s been going on for 21 years,” he said. Alderson noted that COVID-19 has affected the rhythm of the league somewhat. “Last year would have been our [formally] 20th year if it wasn’t for COVID-19,” he said. After a one year break, the league was ready to start back up again. “We have a board of ten people it’s those ten that met early and decided we we’re going to try this year,” Alderson said.
Starting the season, there was a small huddle to overcome. There were too few members of the league for the usual four teams. “This year we had 42 guys come out. We really need 52 for a solid four teams for this league,” Alderson said. He went on to say that having 13 people on a team allows for absences to minimally affect a team’s ability to play a game. This year every team had around 10 players. With players living active lives outside the league, every so often they would be unable to attend their teams game. This would leave a team with too few players to complete a game. To fix this issue the league dissolved one team to better bolster the other three to prevent a shortage of players for a proper game. In spite of the upset, it seems that this year’s season is heading in a strong direction. “We’ve struggled to get back playing this year with the COVID-19 stuff. We started with barley enough, but it looks like we’re finishing now with a pretty good play-off,” Alderson said. Alderson is thankful to those that help make the leagues operation’s possible. “It’s been fun. Thanks to Halifax County High School and Kenneth Day for making the field available. Really without that, we couldn’t play. I’m really happy about that. I’m happy they let us do it in light of COVID-19,” he said. A veteran of over a decade, Rick Dixon, is fond of the Old Timer’s League. “I’ve been playing for 13 years, since 2007. I was rookie of the year,” he said. Currently the only Chathamite on the team, Dixon was brought on board by a friend of his. “Jim Slaughter of Chatham brought me to the Old Timers. Who himself was 75 when he told me about it. He finally had to be asked to retire. He would not quit until finally people were worried about his health and safety,” he said. Like Slaughter, Dixon enjoys the game for the games sake. “Just playing, that’s the most rewarding thing,” he said. “We have a lot of fun. We don’t care about winning. Winning is nice, but it’s not the only thing.” Even though just playing is enough, doing well does feel pretty good too. “The icing of the cake is getting a hit or pitching a complete game. My last complete game I pitched at age 65 was a seven-inning complete game and

O
nce, baseball was known as the Great American Pastime. Softball was not too far behind, either. Across the land, boys and men, girls and women alike played, watched, and discussed these two games which came to symbolize the quintessential American sports. While today baseball and softball must share the limelight with numerous other sports, nevertheless they both are still alive and well. In Southside Virginia, Diamond Fever Sportsplex offers topnotch softball and baseball facilities and a club that excels in coaching youth in both the finer points of the game and the finer points of great character. The complex is located in Ringgold, at 5147
Kentuck Road, on a 10-acre property. The sportsplex includes three fields and an indoor, heated practice facility. The 6,000 square foot building has an artificial turf surface, allowing for year-round practice. The sportsplex also “offers two batting cages, six pitching stations, and multiple hitting nets and tees,” according to the organization’s website. The Diamond Fever organization has been around since 1997 and has developed a reputation for excellence in coaching and competitiveness among its teams. The teams are understandably proud of their tournament-winning tradition (“earning more tournament titles and points than many of our competitors,” as stated on the website).

The strong reputation of the program and its coaching brings players from all over Southside and Central Virginia, as well as from North Carolina (from as far away as the Raleigh area). Back when the club began, it started “with one 12U team,” noted board president Tim Bray. “Over the next few years we added a 14U and a 10U team, followed by a 16U. Several years later we added the 18U team and an 8u group. We added baseball in 2016.” Currently about 60 softball players on five teams (U12, U14, U16, U18) and 30 baseball players on two teams participate on the Diamond Fever travel teams, reported Bray. In 2020, Diamond Fever added T-ball for younger players. Many
players, once they join the organization, stay with it and with their team throughout their grade school years. The instruction they receive from the coaches and the camaraderie they enjoy with their teammates keeps them coming back. “Diamond Fever was established to improve the level of competitiveness in our area for female athletes to be able to compete both in high school and becoming college athletes,” Bray explained. “We have had over 100 college athletes come from our organization since 2001.” And the organization has proven itself to be competitive. “All Diamond Fever teams are travel teams and compete in local, regional, state and national events,” Bray stated. While participating on a winning team provides enjoyment, it is not the ultimate goal of worthwhile youth sports programs. Diamond Fever is not just a program that produces great softball and baseball players; it is an organization that helps develop its players into great young women and men. The organization’s website avers,“to our players, Diamond Fever is so much more” than tournament wins. “With their teammates and coaches, players have learned skills beyond the softball and baseball fields. They have learned the value of teamwork, the meaning of the words ‘Never Give Up,’ and the integrity of bringing good sportsmanship to every part of their lives.” Diamond Fever has a remarkable track record of its alumnae making it onto collegiate softball teams, often with scholarships. The organization boasts, “Our 18U team works hard, plays hard, seeks the best competition-- all while striving to become the best players we can be on and off the field. But what makes Diamond Fever stand out from all the rest? We get our players noticed by college recruiters. All of our recent graduates are playing college ball. That is a 100% success rate!” Now that the organization has been around for over 20 years, it is starting to see its former players returning -- as parents of the next generation of young Diamond Fever athletes. The first T-ball team that the club fielded included five youngsters whose mothers had played in the organization. Diamond Fever’s Sportsplex is available for not only the players on the club teams, but for individuals and other teams, as well. Individual players can obtain private lessons, college students on break can use the facilities to stay in form, and teams can lease the practice facilities. In addition to local rec teams and other travel teams not in the Diamond Fever organization, “We have had league teams, middle school and high school teams use our facility to practice and train. We have partnered with Averett Softball as well prior to their indoor facility being built,” Bray remarked. Private lessons provide another level of softball instruction at the Sportsplex. Two veteran softball players with considerable
Currently, Diamond Fever includes around 60 softball players across five teams and 30 baseball players between two teams. playing, teaching, and coaching experience -- Taylor Trowbridge and Allie Reid -- offer lessons in pitching, fielding, batting, and catching. Trowbridge was a standout, multi-record holding member of the Houghton College (Houghton, NY) softball team, and she coaches collegiate softball as well as offering private lessons at the Sportsplex. Reid likewise set records in college, playing at Concord University (Athens, WV). She has previously coached at the college level and now coaches the Lady Cavaliers of the Chatham High School softball team, in addition to offering lessons at the Sportsplex. Approximately 80 students are taking private lessons at Diamond Fever. The families whose children play in the Diamond Fever organization (and the players themselves) work together to maintain the facility and keep it in pristine condition. They collectively have a facility of which they can be proud and which is an asset to Pittsylvania County and the whole Southside SOUTHSIDE | DISCOVER MAGAZINE | 13
What better way to spend an early summer evening than at the ball field? The Diamond Fever Sportsplex offers an idyllic setting for the club’s games. region. Not only does the facility look good, it helps the local economy as visiting teams come to the area to compete and often spend money at local restaurants, gas stations, and stores. The facility also serves as a venue for various community events. “The Sportsplex has been used for community fundraisers, yard sales, special events and even estate auctions,” Bray stated. While the Sportsplex is relatively new, a little over a decade old, the property has long served as a softball venue, explained Bray. “The original facility, “Triple C” was built in the 70’s and used for men’s and women’s slow pitch league and tournament play. One of the owners was also the founder of Diamond Fever, Jimmy Collie. When the Collie family retired, the facility was sold to Diamond Fever through community fundraisers, donations, and grants. The name was changed to Diamond Fever Sportsplex at that time,” Bray narrated. The club and the quality of instruction it offers its players has made a positive impact on numerous youth players from Pittsylvania County over the years. Student athletes from all four Pittsylvania County high schools, as well as Danville City Schools, Westover Christian Academy, and schools in the surrounding counties (and into North Carolina) have benefited from participating in the club.”My daughter just graduated from college, where she played softball for Emory & Henry,” one parent reported. “She owes a ton of her success to Diamond Fever.” Numerous former players now coach travel and/ or scholastic softball. “They understand the invaluable skills Diamond Fever has offered, and in turn, they want to give back and help those younger athletes from our area,” the organization stated. 14 | DISCOVER MAGAZINE | SOUTHSIDE
The Diamond Fever Hall of Fame includes over 65 former players who have continued at the college level on a softball scholarship. Several hailed from within the county. “All of Diamond Fever players who wanted to play softball in college have been able to live that dream— and that is a testament to the Diamond Fever mission, the parents, and the coaches,” according to the organization. “Diamond Fever has given immeasurable confidence, athleticism, and motivation to every girl who has dedicated her time to the sport.” It is not uncommon to hear adults bemoan the lack of involvement among today’s youth, distraught that kids today only have interest in social media and video games. “When I was their age, I played outside…” the familiar lamentation goes. Diamond Fever Sportsplex and its softball and baseball teams provide proof that there are still many kids in the Southside area who still get outside and play sports. And softball and baseball, “America’s pastime,” remain popular among many of today’s youth.
