Benton County History One of the original twelve counties created from Dubuque County, Benton County is named in honor of Thomas Hart Benton. Benton was a lawyer, colonel in the War of 1812 and senator from Missouri. The county was established in 1843. The first Benton County courthouse in Vinton was a log structure. However, it had no roof and no floor. Since this made court particularly difficult when it rained, residents of the court eventually moved to a local log home for the sessions.
The second courthouse stood unfinished for many years because of a dispute over the location of the county seat. It was finally completed in 1852, but was destroyed by fire in 1853. The county records were rescued by three courageous men who were seriously burned and died from their injuries three months after the blaze. In December 1856, a courthouse dedication was held to celebrate the completion of the third courthouse. This $13,000 building would be replaced by
a $105,000 courthouse in 1906. This fourth courthouse stands today with its 112-foot high tower containing an illuminated clock and a 1500-pound, B-flat bell. Paul
Correll was a local merchant that donated the tower clock and bell. The exterior is made of Buckeye gray sandstone. Extensive repairs were done on the roof and other
areas of the building in 1974. It is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. County population, census April 1, 2020, 25,575.

Bringing Top-Notch Healthcare Services to Rural Iowa About Virginia Gay Hospital, Clinics, Home Health, Nursing and Rehab
As a leader in rural healthcare, Virginia Gay Hospital and Clinics has served families in the greater Benton County, Iowa area since being founded with a gift from Virginia Walcutt-Gay in 1914. With extensive community support, VGH has opened family medical clinics in Atkins, Van Horne, Urbana and Vinton. The hospital provides a wide array of services, diagnostic testing, and clinical expertise in acute care, skilled and private pay care, behavioral health, home health, imaging and laboratory services, nursing and rehabilitation, respiratory therapy, sleep studies, surgical services, therapy services, well-child care, wound care and weight management. The healthcare providers at VGH develop meaningful ongoing relationships with their patients, and their focus is treating the well-being of the whole person. family in mind. Additionally, patients stay within the VGH system, which maintains continuity of care and a strong patient-provider relationship. The providers at Virginia Gay include physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. The physicians work in close consultation with experienced physician assistants and nurse practitioners to assure the best care for the health needs of every generation. Diagnosing and treating illness isn’t the only work VGH providers do. They are also responsible for routine checkups, immunizations, health risk assessments, screening tests and providing advice for improving overall health. Choosing primary care as your first stop for health needs results in better health outcomes, fewer tests and procedures and reduces the cost of specialty care. With an emphasis on prevention, primary health for the family helps prevent illness due to chronic conditions.

Nathan’s Miles Glow Trail - America’s longest glowing trail Nathan’s Miles Glow Trail has already made headlines across Iowa and attracted attention from across the globe. The journey to building the longest glow-in-the dark trail in the country was a long, challenging path for the Vinton Parks and Recreation Department. The idea was approved by the Vinton City Council and work began in 2020. Dirt work was completed later in the year, setting up for the trail to be paved in early 2021. The glowing rock embedded Nathan’s Miles Glow Trail. in the trail was produced by a Canadian company, Ambient Glow Technology. The rock collects sunlight in the day and is charged enough to shine through the night. The glow will effectively last for approximately 20 years. Baker Enterprises installed the trail while Shive-Hattery served as engineering consultants. Nathan Hesson, a Vinton city councilman and former Director of Vinton Unlimited, passed away in January 2021 following recovery from his fifth open heart surgery in Boston at the age of 37. Nathan was “a big champion” for the Vinton Cedar Valley Nature Trail. Parks and Rec department and as Continued to page 13

The Cedar Valley Nature Trail: (Urbana to Brandon) The Cedar Valley Trail is a 51-mile trail that connects the metro areas of Cedar Rapids and Cedar Falls/Waterloo. Opportunities on this trail include: walking, biking, running, photography, nature study, and snowmobiling (allowed in the winter, north of County Home Rd.). Established in 1977. The Hannen Park Nature Trail: (Near Blairstown) The Hannen Park Nature Trail has several miles of trail around the campground and lake. Established in 1957. The Old Creamery Nature Trail: (Vinton to Garrison to Dysart) Email: info@bentoncountyparks.com https://www.facebook.com/OldCreameryNatureTrail The Old Creamery Trail is approximately 15 miles in length. This trail connects Vinton to Garrison, and Garrison to Dysart. While portions of this trail are a rougher limestone surface, the following activities are available on this trail: walking, biking, running, photography, nature study and snowmobiling. Established in 1995. (Continued Improvements) The Rodgers Park Nature Trail: (Near Vinton) The Rodgers Park Nature Trail has several miles of trail around the campground and lake. This scenic trail shows ecological diversity and allows the hiker the ability to realize what type of damage can occur with straight line winds that hit during the summer of 2011. Trails are a mixture of mowed, mulch, packed lime, and seal coat. The Roundhouse Trail: (Near Atkins) The historic Atkins roundhouse trail was originally a rail to trail like the OCNT & CVNT. This trail held a large roundhouse, and helped to establish the city of Atkins. Established in 1988. The Winegar Equestrian Trail: (Near Brandon) The Winegar Equestrian Trail is located at Winegar Park. This 500 acre preserve is open to hunting and thus closes the horse trails during all deer shotgun seasons. There are several miles of groomed trail that extend within Winegar Park from the Mt. Auburn boat ramp to the Tobin’s Cabin area. Established in 2014.

The Tudor Revival building was built in 1931 by Joe Young on his pasture land for his widowed daughter Lizzie Wheeler to support her and her children. The main building also contained residential space where the family lived. It is located on U.S. Route 30, which at this point had been the Lincoln Highway. The café/station also served as a bus depot for the Greyhound and Jefferson bus lines. When Wheeler retired to Cedar Rapids, she rented out the business to others to run. She returned to the café/station in 1967 after the lease ended, but it closed that year because it didn’t have enough parking and vehicles could no longer park along the highway. The building was used as a residence into the 1980s, when it was abandoned. The Benton County Sesquicentennial Commission acquired it as a restoration project to celebrate Iowa’s 150th anniversary of statehood in 1996. It is now owned by the Youngville Highway History Association and open as a café on a limited basis. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. Highway construction and the COVID-19 pandemic led the establishment not to open in 2020. Youngville Cafe was also impacted by the August 2020 Midwest derecho, which topped off two pine trees and collapsed the garage onto the information kiosk. The damage prevented reopening in 2021. The board has set the 2022 schedule: Youngville will reopen June 2, 2022. More information will be posted on days, hours, menus and groups. The 2022 season is slated to run through Thurs. Oct. 27, 2022. See the Youngville Highway History Association Facebook page for updates.

He has been creating chain saw art for over 10 years. After the Derecho wind storm of 2011, Brian added several sculptures throughout Vinton by creating works of art from tree trunks that would have otherwise been destroyed. They can be seen from the comfort of your car. CORN STATUES 20 – 7-ft. tall ears of corn have been placed throughout the Vinton community. Each ear of corn has been painted with a different theme to reflect the community and history. This project was brought to the Vinton Guild of Fine Arts by member Brian Parr in 2015. Art Guild members painted the statues which were put up for auction and are now placed throughout the city for all to view. 1927, having already been paying close attention to the auto industry’s metalstamping technology and assemblyline manufacturing, he decided to design a coaster for mass-production with these features. Enter: The Radio Flyer! He chose the name because of his innovative heart and his focus on dreaming. “Antonio Pasin's wagons captured the spirit of the times. The first steel wagon was named Radio Flyer, by combining his fascination with the invention of the radio – by fellow Italian, Guglielmo Marconi – and his wonderment of flight.” The SINCE 1977 • $3.00 main reason for his switch to the metal coasters and the new assembly was his determination to make a wagon affordable enough, “For every boy. Lil’ Red Hill Coaster 100 years of the classic, iconic, ‘Radio Flyer’ Part One By Amy Stourac The Radio Flyer wagon company celebrates giving a century of children their “first flight” this year. Multiple 100th Birthday celebrations and events have been planned throughout all of 2017 to help signify the customer’s importance to the success of Radio Flyer, and to remember the amazing man that started it all with a dream to make children ‘fly’ and most importantly...to dream. If Antonio Pasin could witness the giggle ‘The Ziggle’ brings out of a child, I imagine he would giggle too. No doubt, he would nod his head at the cutting-edge, employee-focused leadership his grandsons have taken with the company he started 100 years ago. Robert and Paul Pasin took over the company in the late 90s, and largely due to their business tactics, and new innovative products like ‘The Ziggle,’ Radio Flyer Inc. has rolled right up to the century landmark in their little red wagons. When founder Antonio Pasin began the journey 100 years ago however, the wagons were not red, or even metal. The ‘Radio Flyer’ name had not yet been considered, let alone had a song written about it with so many version even a ‘Willie Nelson’ one. The ‘lil’ red wagon’ that took

Atkins boasts a thriving and diverse main street, excellent school system, local community services and close proximity to Cedar Rapids. New, exciting developments are always underway in Atkins. BELLE PLAINE
The city of Belle Plaine.
The city of Atkins.
www.belleplaineiowa.us www.belleplainecommunitydevelopment.com A Main Street Iowa town since 2008. Proud of its past and focused on the future, Belle Plaine is Benton County’s second largest city and a Main Street Iowa community. Offering amenities seldom found in a community its size, Belle Plaine is a slice of Americana alive and well in the heartland. Located in the southwest corner of Benton County just seven miles south of Highway 30, Belle Plaine boasts its own public school system featuring two attendance centers for preschool through senior high students. The Tippie-Mansfield Kirkwood Center provides dual and college credit classes for high schoolers as well as high school completion classes and other offerings for adults. Named a Main Street Iowa community in 2008, Belle Plaine made history when three years later it embarked on a year-long, $4.5 million downtown revitalization project. At the time, it was the only city in Iowa to have simultaneously tackled green streetscape and facade projects using a single general contractor. Twenty-six of 50 storefronts saw improvements, all done in the context of historic preservation. Main Street Iowa awarded the revitalization effort its top honor in 2013, Signature Project of the Year. Belle Plaine businesses provide a wide range of goods and services, including restaurants, a grocery store, convenience stores, pharmacies, gas stations, a medical clinic, law practices, and other professional services. Other feathers in Belle Plaine’s cap include the Tippie-Mansfield Airport with a 4,000-foot concrete runway and industrial park; seven parks, including the 7-acre Beautiful Plaines Prairie Park; a new aquatic center; the Belle Plaine Area Museum and Henry B. Tippie Annex; the King Theatre, a state-of-the-art movie theater in a 1930’s setting; and Belle Plaine Community Library. The Belle Plaine Country Club offers a nine-hole golf course and a community center is home to Belle Plaine Senior Dining. Many churches meet the spiritual needs of the community. Service groups such as Rotary, Lions, Belle Plaine Partners for Beautification, as well as school organizations and women’s groups Athena, PEO, Sorosis, and others, provide Belle Plaine residents bountiful volunteer opportunities. Belle Plaine pulls out all the stops every July to celebrate our country’s independence. The fun kicks off July 3 with activities during the day followed by a street dance. The Lions Club hosts an Old Fashioned Fourth of July celebration complete with a parade down the main street followed by a full day of fun and fireworks at Franklin Park. Founded in 1862 and nurtured by the growth of the railroad, Belle Plaine today is proud and optimistic about its future. Come check us out - you’ll see we’re more than a whistle stop.
