ast year, I outdid myself with my brother’s Christmas present. To understand, though, you have to kind of know my brother. First, he’s super smart. He didn’t do well in school, but he managed to retain so much from it. Second, he’s kind of quirky. He went to college to be a mechanic, but usually doesn’t do anything that involves mechanics. He loves video games, but would rather watch someone play them than actually play them himself. Third, he’s very proficient in very weird subjects. He knows politics, but he also can quote the original Dark Shadows series. He knows all there is to know about WWE - and nothing about Kentucky basketball like a normal person - but loves to debate about religion and taboo political subjects. Basically, he’s a weird dude. He was bullied in school until he stood up for himself. I went to bat for him a couple times, but we didn’t go to the same high school (we live in Chandler, so we had the choice; I chose Castle, he chose Boonville). He’s a dork, but only I’m allowed to call him that. I made sure people knew that. Shopping for a single guy who pretty much has everything he wants isn’t easy. But, I know my brother. So last year, I made him a Lord. It’s this silly website that you can go purchase a square foot of land in Scotland and earn Scottish nobility. I had never seen my brother speechless until that moment. We got him a little scepter and crown. We had the certificate framed. I made him a hoodie that says, “That’s Lord Andy to you.” It was absolutely perfect. It was the best money I’ve ever spent on pretty much nothing in my life. Which leads me to my current debacle. How in the world do I top that? I’ve been able to piggyback off of the lordship for birthdays and other gifts, but I need to top it for Christmas. Total first world problems, I know. On another note, I wanted to take a moment to thank you for another year of support for this magazine. Every time I see someone stopping to pick up a copy, I get little butterflies in my chest - partly because I’ll always wonder if you actually like it and partly because you actually took the time to pick it up. We are a small business and we appreciate each and every one of you. All of us here at Boonville View hope you have a wonderful holiday season!

MUSIC THE MAN behind THE
Jacob Harper is Boonville’s most famous citizen that you’ve probably never heard of. When Jacob moved to the city more than a decade ago, he didn’t have any ties to it. In fact, he still doesn’t have many, besides a couple of neighbors, school teachers and local proprietors. His ties and connections are more of the Hollywood and Nashville variety, thanks to his business, Harper Guitars. Jacob grew up around Lake Barkley, Kentucky. His family was one part musical and one part tactically creative. Of his dad’s eight brothers, five of them are musicians. His mom is a musician and songwriter, as well. “I was just around it from an early age,” he said. “It seemed like a normal thing.” So, he joined the school band. As he got older, though, he realized that the saxophone wasn’t attracting the girls. That’s when he picked up a guitar. To make a living, though, he tapped into the other side of his creative family. His dad was a contractor and by age 17, he was desigining houses for him to build. Naturally, he went to school to be an industrial engineer. The part of him that needed to build things with his hands wasn’t satisfied, though. He started building furiniture, something several uncles and his grandfather already did, but it wasn’t as rewarding as he thought it would be.
“I’d build something and it would go to somebody and it’d sit in a house and I’d never see it again unless I was invited over,” Jacob said. He’d already racked up credit card bills outfitting his woodshop. When he found a guitar he wanted and couldn’t afford, he put all those tools and skills he already had to use. “So, I bought the plans of one and bought some more tools and made my first guitar,” he said. “It made sounds, it played. It wasn’t perfect at all, but I had the itch after that. I built about eight guitars. Somewhere six or seven guitars in, I got married and I had to start being financially responsible

and sell these things. It was an expenisve hobby. We sold the ninth one, I believe, to Alonzo Pennington. I endorsed him as an artist. The 10th one went to Uncle Kracker. So, I had great friends in the music industry and they helped me network. I got really lucky. It’s kind of like a band that is really good, but you’re kind of like, ‘Why doesn’t that band ever make it?’ It’s just the right place, right time, right network of people.” That network started with Scott Hamrick, who helped him form a business model and corporation and get investors. That helped him get bigger and better equipment. Harper Guitars was officially official and Jacob had gone from architect to luthier, or a “guitaritect,” as he likes to call it. He called Jet to look into getting more tools. The person he spoke with at Jet said that he actually knew Jacob - they’d gone to Murray State together. So, they worked out a deal. Jet endorsed him, and part of that endorsement included free tools. They also sent a film crew down for three days to film a segment for their “Jet Masters” series on YouTube. “I went down there and picked out equipment and
felt like I was stealing,” he laughed. “They were good to me.” Everything Jacob produces is handmade. He quite literally takes dry logs of both domestic and exotic woods, mills them down and starts from there. Some are laminated - wood pieces glued together to make the slab bigger and increase strength - and some are solid. Some are dye stabilized. Some have intricate abalone or mother or pearl inlays. Every piece of each guitar is custom. Talking to him, he gets as excited about the process as he does the finished product. “Nothing is not handmade. Everything is handmade... All these complex curves on the neck, that’s all machined, but I have to be able to create that 3D surface,” he said. “My college career and working in architecture, I think 3D and have used that kind of software all my life. So when I had to switch from just traditional tools to using more modern tools, I already had that background, I just had to pull out some old books and relearn. And I consult for a lot of people... I’ve created different hardware and had it machined and chromed.”

BoonvilleView.com 11 With the help of his apprentice, Jacob has designed an acoustic guitar. The process is pretty intricate and wood choice plays a huge factor in how the finished product will sound. He actually designed a fully-adjustable bridge that will allow a change in sound without a change in guitar. “If you watch them, they’ll switch guitars (during sets) because of the different accoustics,” he said. “With accoustics, you can’t intonate everything like you can on an electric.” The first model was set to go to the Avett Brothers, but COVID put a damper on that. He had to lay off the apprentice, his contact is no longer with the Avett Brothers. That’s not to say, though, that he hasn’t worked with some pretty famous names. The stairwell in his shop is lined with VIP passes to shows featuring artists playing his guitars. His first big sell was to Kentucky artist Alonzo Pennington, and it all just kind of snowballed from there. “We’ve built for 3 Doors Down, Cage the Elephant, Vince Gill, Warren Haynes, Almon Brother, Gov’t Mule, lots of others,” he said. “A lot of country groups Chase Rice, Thomas Rhett, Blake Shelton. Most peo-
ple around here don’t know what’s going on. Some people probably think I’m cooking meth because I’ll walk from the garage to the house in a paint suit looking like Breaking Bad.” He’s in talks now of offering models at a dealership. He plans to still offer a custom experience. “That’s the hard part about having a dealership for a store,” he said. “We’re going through that right now. It’s fun because the people helping me design a guitar, I have a feeling that they have no limits. They’re like, ‘I can do this, I can do that,’ stuff that’s not really possible with the bigger brands. When they get the guitar in, they’ve got a stake in it. There’s a part of them in the design of it. Hopefully, that’s the way they feel.” Jacob has had several of his own guitars through the years. His favorite changes with each new build. He’s never been able to figure out what he wants to keep. “Sometimes when times are tight, someone will be like, ‘I really like that one you’re playing.’ ‘Ok, you got it.’ They’ll buy it even though I’ve been playing it for awhile,” he said. “I’ll soup it up and clean it up. But, I guess everything is for sale. Someday I’ll build my guitar. What do they say? The shoe maker never has good shoes.”

oonville’s new Sweet Street Salon came about almost by happenstance. Tara Carrero graduated from Roger’s Academy of Hair Design in 1998. She had four kids in quick succession and decided she needed a career that would help her stay at home a little more with them. So, she went back to school to become a nurse. “My husband is a nurse, too,” Tara said, “so we worked opposites for years. My kids never had to go to daycare. It worked out great. Now, they’re all in high school.” When her daughter, Abi, came to her and said she’d like to find a job that wasn’t fast food, Tara thought about opening a little boutique. “She was going to answer the phones; we have a tanning bed, so she was going to do the cleaning and all that good jazz,” she said. Her original plan was a boutique in the front and a twochair salon in the back. “This was actually just going to be a boutique,” she said. “That’s a lot. They have a few boutiques already here. We were going to put a two-chair salon in the back and make (the front) a boutique, but (was told that wasn’t possible).” Instead, she has five chairs in the front and a rack of boutique clothing. Between Tara and her two stylists, Skyler Shae and Linzee Green, they offer all the basics - cuts, color, perms, highlights, straightening treatments, along with gel polish, manicures, eyelash extensions, facial waxing and spray tans.

They’ll offer a tanning bed in the near future, as well. “This is totally my passion. I’ve been doing this since I was like 12, standing in the bathroom braiding everyone’s hair,” Tara said. “This is therapy for me. I come in and this is therapy for me.” Tara is still working as a nurse in addition to running her salon, so she recommends appointments for the time being. When she’s not nursing, she is generally there from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., but has been known to stay late to accommodate

People are still surprised when they discover Sweet Streets Salon nestled right in beside Funxion. “I even had two police officers come by and they’re like, ‘I didn’t even know you were here.’ I’m like, ‘You drive by this building every day. What?’ So, it’s growing,” she laughed. “Of course, we’d like for it to grow even more.”

im Cron was born into the automotive business. His family owned a junk yard while he was growing up. There, he would watch the guys tear apart vehicles and rebuild them. Tim said he thought the process of making junk look new again drew him into body work. “They told me I was crazy, and they didn’t actually teach me, they just said, ‘You better do it yourself.’ I’m self-taught, I guess,“ he said. After getting his start in the junk yard, Tim joined the Army. When he got out, he went right back to the junk yard and started working again. “I built totals most of the time for the junk yard,” he said. “It was cool. It was something different.” In 2009, Tim and his wife, Bridget, made it official. They purchased the building behind Pizza Hut and Dairy Queen on Main Street and opened

Cron’s Body Shop. While there wasn’t necessarily a shortage of work in their little hidden shop, Bridget said they really wanted road frontage. So, they purchased the land next door, built it up and built a bigger and better shop. “When we bought that building, we thought we were going to be able to put a sign on the road out there,” Bridget said. “Once we got into it, the ground that we would put the sign on was actually Pizza Hut’s, so they were like, ‘No, we’re not going to authorize you to put a sign out there.’ So, we still don’t have road frontage. That’s what started this building in motion.” Cron’s Body Shop offers everything you’d expect from a standard body shop - collision and dent repair, paintless dent repair, frame repair, expert color matching, quality auto glass repair or replacement. They’re known to deliver cars or give rides in their personal vehicles. Both Tim and Bridget said being a part of the community is important to them. They donate to sports teams and volunteer for different events around the community. “They support us, we support them,” she said. In the beginning, Bridget decided to do a weekly giveaway on Facebook. She’d go to a local business and purchase a $50 giftcard and give it away on Facebook. While it was good advertising, it was also her way of paying it forward. Those giftcards helped support another small business - they never did corporate stores and helped fuel the local economy. “I read a thing that was talking about if every person in the community put back into the community $50 a month, it could generate up to $3 million back into the community” she said. “So I thought if we all did that, it would help. Boonville is a small community. So, I thought every week, I could put $50 into another small business here locally.” Their Facebook page recently got hacked, though, so the giveaway has been put on hiatus. The pandemic also made it difficult. “Right now, we don’t know who is going to be open and who isn’t going to be open,” Tim said. “That’s the big problem because we’ve got a bunch of (giftcards) and people come back, ‘They’re closed.’ So, we went to Dairy Queen and got (giftcards). That was another reason we quit, because we weren’t sure who was going to be open.” For Cron’s, though, the pandemic itself wasn’t all bad. Tim said they were able to stay pretty busy. “We’ve been busy through it all,” he said. “It seems like everybody who was off - I was scared to death. I took on every rush job I could so we could stay busy. People started bringing their cars
in, ‘Well, I’m going to be off for a month. Schedule me in.’ It was an ungodly mess.” Now, though, it’s proving a little more difficult. “Now, it’s become a parts issue,” he said. “We can’t get parts. The parts, getting parts for cars, is ungodly impossible.” Tim can usually be found working on cars right alongside his crew. “I want to be a part of the operations,” he said. “If everybody is here at work, I want to be here. I believe if you own something, you need to be here. Just because the guys show up, the owner needs to be here too.” At the end of the day, though, he’s doing what he loves. “It’s always been exciting for me, to make something come back from the grave,” Tim said.
