The Bandera County Chamber of Commerce was established in 1959. It is a membership-based marketing cooperative made up of area businesses, non-profit organizations, and individuals that realize that by combining their money in the form of membership dues, they can increase their promotional powers and strengthen their economic impact.

In other words, if they all work together they can get a lot more bang for the buck than if they each work alone.

Ribbon Cuttings mark the opening of a new business or a change in ownership or management, location, or expansion. They are photo opportunities held at no charge to the Chamber member. We provide the ceremonial scissors and ribbon that are used, and we invite local media, Chamber directors, and members.

The member being celebrated is encouraged to invite friends, family, and anyone else they’d like to have. These are brief picture-taking sessions, and the photographs and captions appear in the local newspaper(s) on a space-available basis, as well as on our Chamber website.

Mixers are held as hosts are available, generally at least 6 times a year. Chamber members and the general public are usually invited. The after-hours (gettogether) gives people the opportunity to meet new business owners, visit locations they may not otherwise

ABOUT US shop, and network with their peers in a relaxed, casual atmosphere. The mixers generally include food, drinks, music, and most importantly the chance to make casual acquaintances into friends. All Chamber members are encouraged to host mixers at their own place of business.

Fundraiser

The Bandera County Chamber of Commerce holds its Major fundraiser on the opening weekend of deer season. The 61st Annual Event now called Buckfest, will be held November 4, 2022. Historically, Bandera County has played host to hoards of hunters during the first weekend of deer season. In the past, local ranchers put out the feed bag for hunters hungry after a day of deer stalking.

After the Chamber was organized, it took over the task to raise money and host a great time for hunters and community members. Over 60 years the event grew into one of the most anticipated celebrations in the county.

The Bandera Chamber is still hosting hunters and the community on the opening day of deer season.

Other chamber programs

The Bandera County Chamber of Commerce is always on the lookout for ideas on how we can benefit member businesses and non-profit organizations.

A long-term event (we’re not sure how old) is our Breakfast Taco Sale.

Every January we get up before daylight one Friday and sell breakfast tacos for donations to raise money, which we use to buy animals at the Bandera County Junior Livestock Show and Sale. We owe the origin of this wonderful idea to Patricia Moore.

Why is the chamber important?

The chamber works with the city and EDC to leverage opportunities to promote local businesses.

Bandera County Chamber of Commerce invites you to our Buckfest, the old Hunter’s BBQ that was held the night before opening day of hunting season. Bandera has been celebrating this event since 1962.

Buckfest includes an upscale dinner, dance, open bar, live/silent auctions, and entertainment for the night!

Your membership includes a listing on the Chamber website, with a link to your site, as well as inclusion in the Membership Directory, which is printed once a year. Chamber of Commerce members are encouraged to leave business cards, brochures, posters, and other printed materials in the Chamber o ce for the scores of weekly visitors to pick up and for us to include in our mail response to telephone and e-mail inquiries.

Members may e-mail information to the Chamber office about their upcoming sales, promotions, and/or events to be forwarded to other members (approximately 400 addresses) via mass e-mail.

Members also have access to the mailing addresses of Chamber of Commerce members for a low processing fee. Mailing lists are ONLY available to Chamber members; this information is not distributed to any other individual or group. Lists of e-mail addresses or telephone numbers are not available in order to respect our members and their often-limited working time.

The Chamber offers resource materials on business building and expansion through a liate members. It also provides periodic training on topics of interest to area business owners and managers.

We will hold a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, with media coverage, when you open your business, reopen, go under new management, etc.

The Chamber also encourages its members to host mixers, which bring people through your door that may never otherwise see what you have to offer. But it’s also up to you: You get out of it what you put into it!

The Chamber directors and staff will do all they can to assist you, but remember, this is a memberdriven organization that is only as strong as its members. We welcome all questions and feedback from our members, as we don’t know what you want from the Chamber leadership unless you tell us. Your involvement is critical to the economic success of the Chamber and so to the economic well-being of Bandera County

The history of Bandera A unique combination of settlers, cowboys, camels and barbeque!

C

attle drives, rodeo cowboys, cypress shingles, camels and barbeque all contributed to Bandera’s colorful free-wheeling past - a past that has inevitably shaped the present.

Cowboy capital of the world

Bandera is o cially the Cowboy Capital of the World.” Some say this is because of the tremendous number of cattle that came through the area during the cattle drive era - Bandera was the starting point for many of the drives to Dodge City, Kansas. The Western Trail Heritage Park in downtown Bandera commemorates this role.

Others attribute the moniker to a large number of dude ranches in the area, while some suggest it is because Bandera boasts a high per capita of world champion rodeo cowboys.

A monument on the courthouse lawn, designed by the late artist Norma Jean Anderwald, pays homage to these champions from Bandera County. Toots Mansfield, inducted into the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in 1981, was World Champion Calf Roper in 1939, 1940, 1941, 1943, 1945, 1948, and 1951.

Other local honorees include 1956 World Champion Calf Roper Ray Wharton, as well as Buddy Groff, Todd Whitewood, Scooter Fries, Clay Billings, immy Adams, and Clint Singleton.

Early settlers

Thomas Odem, A.M. Milstead, and P.D. Saner brought their families to the area in the spring of 1852 and camped along the Medina River, where they engaged in turning cypress trees into roofing shingles.

Montel acquired land and laid out a townsite, a survey that established Bandera’s bonafides. The pair also built a horse-powered sawmill to mill cypress lumber.

Celebrated as Bandera’s first permanent settler, Amasa Clark lived to 101 and along the way fathered 19 children. He survived an attack by robbers and a traumatic drought and ood.

Due to his successful business, Elmdale Nursery, hundreds of pear trees still stand today. His ranch has been recognized in a Texas Family Land Heritage Program.

“Old Man Clark” attributed his life to the healthy climate of Bandera County and to his healthy lifestyle he eschewed the use of tobacco and alcohol. At age 101, he rode his horse to town to vote and still worked his farm. lder Lyman Wight arrived with a colony of approximately 250 Mormons in Bandera around March 1, 1854. After only a few months in the area, the group of Latter-Day Saints moved 12 miles down the Medina River to set up their camp.

Although the site is now covered up by Medina Lake, it is still known as Mormon Camp.

Banderas Polish settlers arrived in Bandera in 1855, only six weeks after the first Polish church was founded in Panna Maria in Karnes County.

The settlers organized St. Stanislaus parish, the oldest Catholic parish in the United States.

The history of

T

he community of Lakehills, nestled into the dragon-like folds of Medina Lake, is growing by leaps and bounds, The Lakehills Civic Center draws the community together and provides comfortable facilities for every activity from serving as a polling place to hosting the Medina Lake Cajun Festival.

Three miles across at its widest point, Medina Lake covers 18 miles and spreads out along 110 miles of shoreline. With its water running an average depth of 75 feet - and 152 feet at its deepest point - fishing in the lake, by all accounts, is excellent.

Medina Lake was formed by a dam built in 1912 at a cost of 1,550,750. Materials were hauled across the rugged terrain by wagons pulled by 16-mule teams.

Handheld pick and shovels, along with mule-pulled scoops, cavated the foundation.

The gravity- ow measures 125 feet wide at its base, Steet wide at the top and rises 164 feet above the bedroc of the Medina River. The structure, held in place by holes drilled into the solid bedrock and filled with concrete, is historically significant because it relies on its bulk of solid concrete for strengt and durability rather than concrete and reinforcement metal. At its completion, it was the largest dam in Texas and the fourth-largest dam in the United States.

Until the arrival of a post o ce in 1961, Lakehills was a community with a name. Community residents were asked to submit potential names and the one that garnered the most votes was Lakehills an appropriate moniker for an area whose hills seem to cup the sparkling lake water.

Organized after the post office was built, the Medina Lake Betterment Association mustered su cient community-minded volunteers to construct the civic center in 1973. Then, armed with a unique fundraising idea from Bob Caswell and wife Barbara ngel, the inaugural Great Gumbo Cook-off was held in 1981. It proved so successful that the Cajun-style celebration became an annual event and evolved in o the Medina Lake Cajun Festival. It is traditionally held on the fourth Saturday in September. The event has paid off the interage and funded improvements to the civic center.

Following the completion of the irrigation lake, the community of Lakehills attracted more and more residents to its shores. Once a fish-camp community with small lots selling for ridiculously low prices, Lakehills has morphed to a township boasting a stateof-the art library and medical clinic, several churches, multi million dollar lakefront homes, shops, restaurants, a county park, RV parks and commercial businesses.

MEDINA HISTORY

Indian raids, armadillos and apples

The history of Medina Slowly written history

Partly due to the threat of Native American raids, between 1871 and 1879. land around Medina was swapped as frequently as family recipes and tall tales.

Bandera County Deputy Sheriff ack Phillips was the last person in Bandera County killed by Native Americans. He died in Seco Canyon, near what is now Medina, in 1876.

After the deputy’s death H.H. Carmichael decided that his recently purchased property had become a liability. Fearing the location was unsafe, he demolished his nearly completed residence and moved his family to Bandera. After Carmichael sold the tract, a house was built on the property in 1878. Called “Nesting Place,” the house still stands and received a historical marker in 1965.

But when word spread that Native American raids had stopped, Medina experienced a rush of new settlers and businesses. A post o ce opened in 1880.

Tom Sheppard, the “father of Medina,” opened a store there by 1881, and the rock building that now houses Hatfield Realty was built in 1888. By 1900, Medina boasted a cotton gin, corn mill, hotel, private bank, two churches, three general stores and 150 residents.

Ranching was the primary occupation.

With the promise of motorized transportation, the area’s population climbed to 400 by 1914, then dwindled during the Great Depression as residents moved away in search of jobs. Although the community’s population has uctuated ever since, it once again is on the upswing as people ock to the Texas Hill Country.

‘Diller’ baskets

Women helped write the history of Bandera County and Medina supplied its share of colorful female characters. One was “Granie” Walters, who was born in 1888. To support her six children and invalid husband, she began a cottage industry of sorts.

She fashioned and sold armadillo baskets. When her diller dog ant barked at night, Walters raced outside and caught the armadillo by its tail, ipping it over on its back and bopping it between the forelegs with a 18

rock or hammer to kill it without damaging the shell.

She then skinned the critter and scraped out its shell, which she dipped in aresenic to protect it from insects.

Walters attened the shell by stu ng it with rocks or bricks. After it dried, she lined the inside with pretty fabric and fastened the nose and tail together with wire to form a handle. The early entrepreneur sold between 2,000 and 3,000 baskets around the world.

She also made dozens of quilts during her lifetime.

When she was in her 70s. Walters dug a septic tank with a towbar and shovel. Stating, “God invented legs before cars, she walked everywhere she went. Walters died in 1987 at the age of 99. At that age, she could still crack a pecan with her teeth.

The apple cometh

Baxter Adams brought apple farming to Medina in 1980. His experiments with orchards of dwarf apple trees were so successful that other Hill Country residents cleared cedar and planted apple trees. The dwarf trees produced regular sized apples that were sweeter than varieties from larger trees. Between 1,000 and 2,500 dwarf trees could be planted on one acre.

And so an industry was born and apples revitalized Medina. The first commercial apple crop was in 1984.

In 1989, the Texas Department of Agriculture declared Medina the “Apple Capital of Texas,” and the following year 300,000 trees in the area produced a total of 100 tons of fruit. Although the industry has since died down in the area, Medina still boasts the state apple title.

Recently, Medina has experienced a second revitalization that has included an art gallery, upscale western d cor shop, a bakery, several restaurants and a wonderful library that also serves as a community center.

Medina takes its name from the Medina River, which historians believe was named in 1689

by Spaniard Alonso de Leon in honor of noted engineer and scholar Pedro Medina. Even in today’s technological age, the river overlows its banks during heavy rains, cutting the community off from the rest of the county.

PIPE CREEK HISTORY

Indians, a lost smoking pipe and a town

The history of Pipe Creek

P

ipe Creek’s first inhabitants were Lipan Apache Indians who settled near the area’s flowing streams and bubbling springs. Some tribes specialized in making arrowheads, while others crafted beads, blankets or pottery. From studying Indian mounds in the area, it is believed that tribes traded with each other to meet their respective needs. Native Americans living within a mile of where the Barrel House is now located on Highway 16 used mussel shells for arrowheads.

Pipe Creck takes its name from a stream that ows through the area. According to local historian . Marvin Hunter, Bandera’s first white settlers, Thomas Odem.

AM. Milstead and Pat D. Sane, traveled through the area in 1852. Odem supposedly lost his pipe in the creek, and the community’s name was coined. A second account, however, claims Odem later found his pipe in a creekbed, which was dry as a bone courtesy of a continuing drought.

During Pipe Creek’s early years, jobs were scarce due to the community’s relatively isolated location. Settlers made do’’ and hand-fashioned needed implements,

even hewing livestock watering tanks out of solid rock.

Some, discouraged with the hard-scrabble existence, soon packed it in; others stayed and came up with innovative ways to supplement their meager incomes They made charcoal and hauled it by horse-drawn wagons to sell in San Antonio. They also sold firewood fence posts, molasses, milk, butter, eggs and handcrafts.

The Homestead Act, enacted in 1839, encouraged settlers to acquire land abundant with wild game, including bears, making it possible for them to feed their families. The act also protected wives and children of early settlers from losing their homes should the man of the house be lured into a not-so-honest game of chance.

Widows and children of deceased breadwinners were secure in knowing that their homesteads could not be removed because of some improper or manufactured claim of debt.

An 1870 census reported only two houses in Pipe Creek, and by 1876, Native Americans could no longer be found in the area.

TARPLEY HISTORY

Canyons, silver and good eating!

The history of Tarpley

T

arpley was originally known as Hondo Canyon; “hondo” is the Spanish word for “deep.” The first human footprints made in the canyon were from the Native Americans who had settled along the banks of Hondo and William’s Creek.

As evidenced by a date carved on the ledge of a small rock cave, Spanish explorers apparently hit the region by 1577 - the oldest recorded date found in the State of Texas. The first Tarpley landowner is believed to have been Louis de Carvajal de la Cueva, who was granted a large tract of land by the king of Spain for capturing nglish pirates. However, records show that the pirates were actually starving and Carvajal was a slaveholder, which may question history as to the integrity of his brave deed. A native of Portugal, Carvajal may have been involved in the 1577 silver-finding expedition to Hondo Canyon, the memory of which, even now, remains etched in stone. Carvajal’s land grant was lost when he was burned at the stake for pretending to be a Catholic.

A Spanish map of the area became available in 1768, and by 1775 a published nglish map accurately rendered the Hondo River and other landmarks.

Although five tracts of land were granted to settlers in Bandera County in 1841, settlers are believed to have been in the area as early as 1830. Bandera County was shaved off Uvalde and Bexar counties into a separate 22

county in 1843. The first abstract of the Tarpley valley of 4,428 acres was granted to Antonio Gomez in 1847.

Family cemeteries indicate settlers were present in the Tarpley area prior to the Civil War. A U.S. Post Of established for Hondo Canyonin 1878, with M.C. Click, ohn Gates, and George Prickett serving as early postmasters. The last Native American in the Hondo Canyon was forced from the valley by uropean settlers in 1880.

The post o ce moved to its present location in 1897 and was renamed Tarpley after George Prickett’s infant son, Clarence Tarpley Prickett. In the 1895 census, 78 people were recorded in Tarpley. Wood-frame homes and the post office were soon joined by a church, blacksmith, school, general store, and cemetery.

Prior to a later expanded version, a private home served as Tarpley’s first school. The two-room school, constructed in 1921, closed in the 1950s but is being restored by the community for use as a civic center.

Before boll weevils put an end to King Cotton, Tarpley also sported a hotel, drug store, telephone company, general store, and physician. By 2000, the census recorded a mere 20 people in Tarpley, yet the community offers an RV campground, a new general store, a bed and breakfast, and two restaurants. The post o ce continues to operate.

VANDERPOOL HISTORY

Isolation, ranches and California migration

The history of Vanderpool

bviously ahead of their time pioneers Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Vanderpool relocated to Bandera County with their children, products of former marriages by both parents. The couple opened a post o ce on Feb 10, 1886, with L. B. named as postmaster.

The post o ce also served as a small store and despite her husband’s official designation, Mrs. Vanderpool actually ran the post o ce and store while her husband traveled to San Antonio for supplies, trips which took up to a week. The mail was carried on horseback over the mountains from Medina to Vanderpool several times a week.

Both Vanderpools died within six months of arriving at the location and are purportedly buried in unmarked graves in the Vanderpool and Waresville Cemeteries.

Henry Taylor arrived in the Sabinal Canyon around 1871. He purchased a large tract of land with Gid Thompson, and the men began ranching. Taylor deeded acreage for a burial ground and school. The Taylor School was open until about 1949; according to a local resident, the school bus would come from Utopia, and families within a 30-mile radius would take their children to Vanderpool to catch the bus. The former Taylor Schoolhouse now serves as a community building

In her book, “All Around the Canyon,” Annalee Burns noted a severe drought in 1917 and 1918 forced families to leave the Vanderpool-Utopia area and move to California.

“Absolutely nothing was being raised on the farms and ranches in the area, she wrote. Living directly off the land as folks did in those days, the two-year drought was far more critical than the ones suffered now when foodstuff and commercial feed can be easily acquired.

According to Burns, so many Vanderpool families settled in Selma, California, that the town eventually became known as “Little Vanderpool.”

Members of the Upper Sabinal Missionary Baptist Church of Christ built the Vanderpool Tabernacle in 1929 on land also purchased from Taylor in 1901. For approximately 20 years, the tabernacle sat idle. Cedar and weeds encroached the open-sided building and it fell into disrepair. The Vanderpool Community Cemetery Association cleared the area and served an old-fashioned barbecued supper. That event sparked interest in renovating the building. After the property was deeded to the Vanderpool community, the tabernacle was restored and is still used by the community today.

Government

The county is governed by the Bandera County Commissioners Court, which includes one elected commissioner from each of four precincts and the county judge. Commissioners are elected on staggered four-year terms. The judge is also elected on a four year term. Commissioners Court meets on the second and fourth Thursday of each month at 10 a.m. at the Bendera County Courthouse. The agenda is posted at the courthouse 72 hours in advance of each meeting.

Water/Sewage/Garbage Inside the city limits of Bandera, the Municipal Utilities District (MUD) provides water, sewage and garbage pick-up. The district also serves some adjoining residential areas outside the city limits.

HELPFUL INFORMATION Medina has its own water supply, furnished by the Medina Water Supply Company, which is only available to the immediate town area. There is no central sewage system or garbage pickup.

Some subdivisions also provide their own water supplies. Others, and most homes in rural Bandera County, rely on private wells for water and have private septic tanks. Home buyers should always inquire about water and sewage systems during the purchase process.

Garbage pickup may be provided by major corporations based in San Antonio or by private local companies.

The Chamber of Commerce can assist with information on local service providers, but has no information on outside companies.

Wanna be a cowboy?

That’s an easy order to fill in Bandera, Texas, The Cowboy Capital of the World. In this community, you can’t toss a horseshoe without hitting a dude ranch, rodeo ground, western store, or dance hall. Whether you’d like to cowboy up for a few days at a dude ranch or just grab some boots and dance to Western tunes, Bandera has plenty of opportunities to get in touch with your inner cowboy.

Dude Ranches: Bandera is well known for its many dude ranches, the perfect way for you and your family to experience life as a cowboy for a few days. Properties like the Dixie Dude Ranch, Flying L Guest Ranch, Mayan Dude Ranch, Rancho Cortez, Silver Spur Guest Ranch and Twin lm Guest Ranch will keep you busy with horseback rides, hayrides, fishing, cookouts, and more. You don’t have to have any previous riding experience to enjoy the ranches. Typically the guest rates include three meals a day as well as Western entertainment and even supervised kids’ programs. During the peak summer months, expect a minimum stay at many ranches.

Rodeos: Bandera is also synonymous with rodeos.

During the summer season, the Twin lm Guest Ranch has a rodeo every Saturday night. For professional action, check out the Bandera Pro Rodeo Association’s annual PRCA Memorial Day Rodeo at Mansfield Park Arena.

Honky Tonks: Another city might call them nightclubs, but there’s nothing fancy about Bandera; this town proudly calls their downtown bars honky tonks. Live country music can be found most nights.

Bandera honky tonks often host many big name acts. Don’t miss tonight’s band at 11th Street Cowboy Bar, grab a beer and burger at the Chikin Coop or listen to local pickers at Arkey Blue’s Silver Dollar Saloon.

Cowboys on Main: During the warm weather months, downtown Bandera is transformed with a Saturday event called Cowboys on Main. Scheduled from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. right on Main Street, the event features horseback riding cowboys, storytellers, trick ropers, musicians and a lot more. The event is sponsored by the Frontier Times Museum’s Living History Project. Save some time for a stop at the Frontier Times Museum. The museum dates back to 1927 and is a good place to learn more about Bandera’s early days through cowboy paraphernalia, Native American arrowheads, and prehistoric artifacts.

Schools in the Bandera area Bandera ISD

Bandera Independent School District comprises four campuses: two elementary, one middle school and one high school. Alkek Elementary School is located at 1798 Highway 173 South in Bandera, and Hill Country Elementary is at 6346 FM 1283 in Pipe Creek. Both campuses are open to students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Bandera Middle School, which houses grades six through eight, is at 1005 Cherry Street, and Bandera High School is located at 474 Old San Antonio Highway, both in Bandera. There is also a central administrative complex at 815 Pecan Street in Bandera.

The school district serves more than 2,200 students and employs more than 300 teachers. It includes over 400 square miles encompassing the eastern half of Bandera County, which includes a number of rural communities including Bandera, Wharton’s Dock, Tarpley, Pipe Creek and Lakehills.

Medina Independent School District serves approximately 270 students with two campuses. The elementary school houses grades pre-kindergarten through six, with seventh through 12th grades at the secondary school. Both are locatie Bobcat Lane. The mascot for the 1-A w ich is the bobcat and school colors are blue and gold.

Medina High School was named a bronze winner in U.S. News & World Report’s Best High Schools 2008.

The school was also included in the 2007 Texas Monthly list of Best Public High Schools.

Pipe Creek Christian School

The non-denominational Pipe Creek Christian School provides a challenging academic nrogram for children from age three through middle school.
