Growing Up Jefferson: Birthdays, Breakfast, and the Funny Papers
By John T. Taylor It was a typical hot, muggy August afternoon that Sunday at Marshall’s Kahn Memorial Hospital. Or so I was told. It was my birth day, or put another way, the day of my birth, many years (decades) ago. And it has been celebrated many times in many ways by my family and friends. I’m also told when Mama asked the sex of her baby, the doctor told her I had her features and my Daddy’s fixtures. She probably wasn’t amused. It later became my experience that she had a less than cavalier attitude towards crudeness, especially when it pertained to “matters of the flesh”. But, back to those birthday celebrations. There were parties, of course, and
those parties were a whirlwind of Army, cowboys and Indians, coonskin caps and Cub Scout uniforms. There were birthday cards, money from my grandmother and back-to-school shirts and jeans, then one lollapalooza of a party on my sixth birthday. It seems there were three Johns born on successive days that August—John Holcombe, myself and John Thornton. I can’t imagine why, but our mothers must have thought it would be a good idea to have a joint birthday celebration. So we did. At the newly constructed American Legion Building on West Broadway. It was attended by 60 children, there being a post-war boom in children. I don’t know the reason,

although the word cacophony comes to mind, but that was the last joint birthday party in my party career. But then a new tradition was generated—slumber parties. My childhood friend, Bill Ford, and his parents were the originators of this revelation. Bill, his older brother Jackie, David Clark and myself piled into the back of future Judge Bill Cornelius’s 1957 Plymouth station wagon. Bill’s dad, Jack, had apparently borrowed it for this occasion. This would have been about 1958. Our destination—El Chico’s Mexican Food Restaurant in Longview. Now being a somewhat sheltered lad raised on meat, potatoes and peas, I had never had Mexican food. I didn’t know a taco from an enchilada. Truth be told, I still struggle to describe a chalupa or
taquito. But, on the recommendation of someone in the Ford family, I had the Saltillo dinner. For those non-El Chico alumni, that was a beef enchilada, a cheese enchilada, refried beans and rice. I was hooked and thought this must be the Omega of all epicurean adventures. Perhaps it wasn’t, but Mexican food is still close to the top. Then back to Bill’s house, for an all-nighter, mattresses on the floor, joke-telling, baseball talking, Sea Hunt watching, the television channel signing off with the Star Spangled Banner and then a test pattern. Of course, we all stood as they played the National Anthem, watching our Army, Air Force and Navy weapons displayed on the screen. Now I mentioned Sea Hunt with Lloyd Bridges (Mike Nelson). He

to start their day. Daddy had a business to open and my mother would sometimes have early duty at school. So it might just have been cereal on some mornings, my personal favorites being Sugar Crisps and Rice Krispies. Those Rice Krispies always went down better with sugar on them so it wasn’t a health thing for me. And I drank the cereal milk. We didn’t waste milk. On cold mornings, my dad liked oatmeal. And what Daddy wanted is what we had. Now I have come to like oatmeal as an adult, but when I tried to eat it at home, it seemed to just swell in my mouth and choke me when I swallowed. And it looked like wall paper paste. Might have tasted like it also, although I admit to never having tasted wall paper paste. You need to know that this was an early 1950’s style kitchen. There was no automatic dishwasher, no microwave oven, no garbage disposal, and a gas stove instead of a countertop range and separate oven. We had some sort of laminate countertops and a rectangular table with metal edging and legs, also with a yellow laminate top and four vinyl chairs. One other common fixture in today’s kitchen that we were missing was a toaster. Mama made toast in
wasn’t our only favorite in this Golden Age of Television, although it was more black and white than golden. We also favored Maverick with Brett and Bart (Jack Kelly and James Garner) and Highway Patrol with Dan Mathews (Broderick Crawford). Then we’re up early to more television hits like Roy Rogers, Fury, My Friend Flicka and our Saturday morning favorite, Sky King. This slumber party innovation, or as my dad always called them slumber less parties, became de rigeur on the Jefferson birthday party circuit. And it wasn’t always just for birthdays. Now these usually took place on a Friday night, because Sunday morning and Sunday School came early and it was always a rush to get dressed and have breakfast before that 9:30 a.m. start. And breakfast was not to be missed. We always had breakfast of some sort. My Aunt Gladys, a school teacher, as was my mother, always said a child can’t learn if there is no fuel in the furnace. I know now how blessed I was to have breakfast every day. I’m sure many of my classmates at Jefferson Elementary School did not. But it seems like professional educators have come around to my Aunt Gladys’s way of thinking and provide breakfast at school for children

the oven broiler, pats of margarine on the bread and in it went. We also didn’t have a timer, so many times that toast was, at best, crispy. I can remember many mornings her scraping the burned layer off the toast into the trash can. We didn’t waste bread either. One morning on the way to school my dad passed a gas sub-station and told me that’s where mama burned the toast. I didn’t get it and when I repeated it to her she said she didn’t get it either. But I expect that daddy did later. When I eventually had breakfast at someone’s house who used a toaster, I found it to be toasted on both sides, not just the top. I expect I might have appeared like an archaeologist examining some newly found relic. I mentioned earlier the rush we always
had to get ready for Sunday School at the First Baptist Church. Not Daddy. He was raised a Methodist and was active at the First Methodist Church although occasionally he would say that “the ox is in the ditch” which I learned later was a Biblical reference. I knew that we didn’t own an ox. But we always had big breakfast on Sundays—the full Monty of waffles, eggs, bacon or sausage and perhaps the aforementioned scraped toast. In many ways it was the best meal of the week and I still look forward to our Sunday breakfast at our home today. The other big treat for me on Sundays was the “funny papers” or the comics that came with the Sunday edition of the Shreveport Times. Before I was old enough to read proficiently, there was

Growing Up Jefferson: A Lifetime in a Park ...Continued From Page 38
a radio show on Sunday mornings that read the comics to kids, serial by serial, frame by frame. It was great for us kids and parents alike, freeing them for other things and probably increasing my reading ability. Just an historic factoid here (I know, I know, but it will only take a minute). That radio station was probably KWKH in Shreveport, 1130AM on your radio dial. The WKH stands for W. K. Henderson who started that radio station in 1926. Mr. Henderson grew up in Jefferson and coincidentally lived in a large, three story Gothic house located across Line Street from where I grew up at the intersection of East Walker and Line. No, I wasn’t there then, kids. That house was built in the 1870’s by Col. Enos Ward Taylor, a distant cousin and druggist, who moved to Fort Worth when Jefferson began to decline. Later, the Henderson family acquired that house. When it burned, they moved to Shreveport. I wasn’t there then either. Okay, history lesson over and back to the comics. Now I wasn’t a fan of every strip, but Dick Tracy, Prince Valiant, Hopalong Cassidy, Nancy and The Lone Ranger stood out. Mary Worth and Pogo not so much. Comics still ap-
pear in many newspapers today and I read them every Sunday still, although I do my own reading now and I’ve gravitated more to Blondie, Peanuts and The Family Circus. I think they’re still important. I read one newspaper publisher said that omitting the comics and crossword puzzle from his newspaper would get him in more trouble with readers than any other act. Breakfasts were always fun for me at my 702 E. Walker home. The family was together at the table, almost always in a good mood, we had real conversation and the television was off. But the Sunday breakfasts were the best, and the “funny papers” just made it that much more so. It’s still that way for me today. Daddy told me one time that one day I would make a decision about who I would marry. And, when I was making that decision, he said to picture looking at that girl over the newspaper at the breakfast table for the rest of my life. That would make the decision easier. I didn’t always listen, but that was a time I’m glad I did. I have been looking at that girl over my newspaper at the breakfast table for 48 years. And our Sunday breakfast is still the best meal I’ve ever had.
