On Sept. 22, 1944, Adams enlisted in the USNR (WAVES) during World War II, Class V-10. She met her husband, Vol L. Adams, USMC in the service and they were married in April 1946. She was honorably discharged March 18, 1946. She was a Marshall native.

Dr. Aiken Lt. jg (MC) USN, USNR is 24 in this photo. He served from 1942 until 1946, during World War II. He joined the Navy upon graduation from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. He served as a medical officer in the Pacific Theater, specifically Guam, Okinawa and Guadalcanal. He did his medical residency at the US Naval Hospital in San Diego, Calif., in 1944. Upon detachment in 1946, he returned to Marshall and practiced medicine until his death in August 1968.

He is retired Chief Warrant Office 2nd Class. Service dates: 1952-1975. He and his wife have lived in Sweet Springs for approximately 20 years.

Barr was attending Rockhurst College in Kansas City, Mo., at the beginning of World War II. After graduation, he was sworn in to the USNR on Feb. 3, 1942.

After Midshipman training on the campus of Notre Dame University, he was assigned to the Landing Craft Group, Atlantic Fleet in Norfolk, Va. His active duty included time in the European Theater, where he participated in the invasion of Sicily on July 9, 1943. He was later assigned to the Pacific Theater, where he took part in the Battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines on Oct. 20, 1944, as Commanding Officer of a LCC vessel.

At the war's end, he had temporary command of an LST. He was Honorably Retired with the rank of Lieutenant on April 1, 1947.

Pat grew up in Slater and graduated there in 1966. He entered the U.S. Air Force in 1971, and was discharged in 1974, achieving the rank of Sergeant. He served as a medical corpsman, and was attached to the Air Force Hospital in Danang during his time in Vietnam. He was laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery in February of 2017.

"I was inducted into the U.S. Army January 1952 and sent to Camp Roberts, Calif., for 16 weeks of Advanced Infantry Training. In July, I was assigned to Camp St. Johann, Austria, to the 350th Infantry Regiment as a Wheel Vehicle Mechanic and part-time Company Clerk. The 350th was on border guard between the Russian and American sector of Austria. After 12 months, I was rotated to Ft. Sheridan, Ill., to finish my tour of duty." Bentley is a Marshall native.

Beilsmith grew up in Slater and graduated from Slater High School in 1961.

Beilsmith entered the Navy in 1967.

He was discharged in 1970, achieving the rank of Lt. J.G. During the Vietnam War he served as a communications watch officer on both the USS Kitty Hawk and USS Constellation in the Tonkin Gulf. Age 24 in picture.

Bierbaum served in the United States Army from 1945-1946 during World War II. He was a Private First Class at his honorable medical discharge in 1946. He lived most of his life in and around Grand Pass. He graduated from the Grand Pass High School and was a farmer's helper most of his life. He died in 1973 at the age of 52.

Slater area resident Blumhorst was a Lance Corporal (E-3) in the Marine Corps. He received an Honorable Discharge Feb. 10, 1963.

Bolton was a Marshall boy who was the first drum major for the high school in the early 1940s. He enlisted in the Navy after graduation in 1942. He was discharged in 1946 after World War II service and in 1952 after serving in the Korean War.

Butler is a Slater native. He was an SP/5 in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. His basic training was at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., AIT training at Army Security Agency at Ft. Mammoth, N.J. Service dates: June 21, 1970, to June 21, 1972.

Slater was Burnett's hometown. Burnett was 21 when inducted into the Army in 1942. He was a Pfc with the 3597th and 3592nd Quartermaster Truck Company. He was part of Patton's Third Army. He served 22 months in England, France, Luxembourg and Germany. Burnett drove a 6x6 2.5 ton army truck, hauling gasoline, troops and ammunition. He was part of the following battles and campaigns: Rhineland, Central Europe, Ardennes, Normandy and Northern France. He earned five Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Medal. He was Honorably Discharged on Dec. 17, 1945.

Timeline: 20th World War II Sept. 1, 1939 - Sept. 2, 1945

World War II was the biggest and deadliest war in history, involving more than 30 countries. Sparked by the 1939 Nazi invasion of Poland, the war dragged on for six years until the Allies defeated Nazi Germany and Japan in 1945.

World War I began in 1914, after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and lasted until 1918. During the conflict, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire (the Central Powers) fought against Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Romania, Japan and the United States (the Allied Powers). Thanks to new military technologies and the horrors of trench warfare, World War I saw unprecedented levels of carnage and destruction. By the time the war was over and the Allied Powers claimed victory, more than 16 million people—soldiers and civilians alike— were dead.

On June 25, 1950, the Korean War began when some 75,000 soldiers from the North Korean People’s Army poured across the 38th parallel, the boundary between the Soviet-backed Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to the north and the pro-Western Republic of Korea to the south. This invasion was the first military action of the Cold War. By July, American troops had entered the war on South Korea’s behalf.

As far as American officials were concerned, it was a war against the forces of international communism itself. After some early back-and-forth across the 38th parallel, the fighting stalled and casualties mounted with nothing to show for them. Meanwhile, American officials worked anxiously to fashion some sort of armistice with the North Koreans. The alternative, they feared, would be a wider war with Russia and China– or even, as some warned, World War III. Finally, in July 1953, the Korean War came to an end. In all, some 5 million soldiers and civilians lost their lives during the war. The Korean peninsula is still divided today.

century war eras Gulf War Aug. 2, 1990 - Feb. 28, 1991 The Persian Gulf War was an international conflict that was triggered by Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait in 1990. Iraq’s leader, Saddam Hussein, ordered the invasion and occupation of Kuwait. The potential threat Iraq then posed to Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest oil producer and exporter, prompted the United States and its western European NATO allies to rush troops to Saudi Arabia to deter a possible attack. Egypt and several other Arab nations joined the anti-Iraq coalition and contributed forces to the military buildup, known as Operation Desert Shield. A sustained aerial bombardment, named Operation Desert Storm, destroyed Iraq’s air defenses. Operation Desert Sabre, an allied ground offensive, was launched on Feb. 24, and within three days, Arab and U.S. forces had retaken Kuwait City. Meanwhile, the main U.S. armoured thrust drove into Iraq and attacked Iraq’s armoured reserves. By the time that U.S. President George Bush declared a cease-fire for Feb. 28, Iraqi resistance had collapsed.

Vietnam War Nov. 1, 1955 - April 30, 1975

The Vietnam War was a long, costly and divisive conflict that pitted the communist government of North Vietnam against South Vietnam and its principal ally, the United States. The conflict was intensified by the ongoing Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. More than 3 million people (including over 58,000 Americans) were killed in the Vietnam War, and more than half of the dead were Vietnamese civilians. Opposition to the war in the United States bitterly divided Americans, even after President Richard Nixon ordered the withdrawal of U.S. forces in 1973.

Communist forces ended the war by seizing control of South Vietnam in 1975, and the country was unified as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam the following year.

This is a picture of me then, an infantryman known as P.F.C. (E-2) Theodore Byers, 18 years old, after my first tour in Vietnam, as it was known then, with D Co., 1/9, 3rd Marine Division, FMF Pacific. I served from July 1962 to December 1966, including a sixmonth extension so I would have enough time to serve to return to Vietnam. I was in I Co., 3/9, 3rd Marine Division, FMF Pacific, and mustered out as a Cpl. (E-4) having been busted once losing technically two stripes, one that I was to get the next day, plus one that I had, and turning down a battlefield promotion. I was in Security, Headquarters Company, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, FMF Pacific for the last six months of my enlistment and second tour of duty in Vietnam.

During the first half of 1966 there was an article in the military newspaper "THE PACIFIC STARS & STRIPES" about an all Negro (U.S.) Marine Squad that was assigned many suicide missions, and they were successful in pulling them off.

According to the article, they were so successful that the VC (Viet Cong) put out a $10,000 Piastres — Vietnamese dollars, which were almost the equivalent of the coupons that we were using for money while serving in country — reward for any Vietnamese who could prove that they had killed a Negro trooper. The proof would be a witnessed killing, or a body part: a finger, an ear, a nose, etc. That was part of my reasoning on turning down the battlefield promotion. I was a Fire Team Leader, with most of my missions being reinforced to almost

squad size, and many of them being suicidal. I made mention of that as I turned down the promotion, telling the Sgt. that I had enough people to be worried about and that I don't want more suicidal missions to be looking forward to.

NOTE: this was at a point in time when we were being lied to — the Viet Cong (VC) are not trying to kill Negroes. They had a lot of literature trying to get us to not fight because they said that they were fighting to get the same rights that we were fighting for in the USA at that point in time. On my first tour, we were doing Special Ops with Navy Seal Team 1 in the Cape St. Jacques area (Vung Tau — may be misspelled) from just before Christmas of 1964 to mid-February of 1965. My second tour was from November 1965 to December 1966. On my R&R I had chosen to go to Thailand, but my orders were cut for me to go to Penang. I asked about "Penang,” and no one in the office had any answers for it. For the five days when you are on R&R, you are on your own, and if you needed extra funds there was a place one could go to take a draw off of their next paycheck. Before we are disembarked in any country, they let us know about the customs of that country, the value of that country's money against our American money, and

things not to do in each country, etc.

Immediately I knew that I did not have enough money to be in Penang, Malaysia, an island, tourist hot spot, of which I was in the third contingent of American veterans to be allowed to go there on R&R. I had more than enough money for Thailand, but only enough for a couple of days at the most in Penang. There were three other Negro Marines in the same situation that I was in.

None of us got an advance on our paychecks, and we decided that we would each get our individual motel bill paid for in advance in the cheapest air conditioned hotel on the island, and call home for some more money to be wired to us. We laughed as each of us tried to convince our relatives that it was really us, and that we were not in Vietnam at that point in time but on R&R, and then trying to get them to understand what R&R is. None of us got any money wired to us. On the second day, we ran across some Malaysian Muslims, of India origin, who took us under their wing and made sure that we had one free meal a day provided by a Muslim restauranteur. We got free tours via Muslime Tri-shaw (spelling) owners, and we got one free ticket to the movies. Knowing a lot about the Bible and how it says that we are to be, I was intrigued by the behavior of this group of Muslims, and later in life became one formally and had my name changed to Tadar Jihad Wazir.

I moved my household from Kansas City, Mo., to Marshall, Mo., in 1983. I retired from the State of Missouri, Department of Corrections, Division of Human Services, as a chaplain in Y2K on call, and was called back almost part time 1K hours annually maximum, and fully retired on July 4, 2014.

Cook was from Blackburn. During the Korean Conflict, he was inducted into the U.S. Army and took his basic training in Camp Pickett, Va., as a Medical Aid man.

He was sent to Medical Technician School in Fort Sam Houston, Texas, and did his internship at Fort Benning, Ga. hospital.

After a 30-day furlough, he was sent overseas and stationed in the 8th Medical Ambulance Company as a Squad Leader and ambulance driver in Karlsruhe, Germany, for 13 months. He was released from service in Fort Knox, Ky., in 1954 into the inactive Army Reserves until his Honorable Discharge in 1960.

Slater native Drummond was a Staff Sergeant during World War II. Shown at 18 years old.

R.V. Drummond, a Slater native, joined the United States Army Air Force in December of 1943 at the age of 18. His occupation was the bombing of Berlin, Germany, on Oct. 6, 1944, in World War II. R.V. continued on, aiding the United States in 34 more bombing raids over Germany, and seeing action on the ground, as well as in the sky, at the Battle of the Bulge — the largest battle in World War II. Mr Drummond stated that in the Battle of the Bulge, the forces that combined together to break the German defensive was a total of over 1,140,000 soldiers.

Drummond remembers when General Patton’s forces met with the Nazi General’s at the national line at the Battle of the Bulge. He recalls two flares

SRA (E-4) Drummond was in the U.S. Air Force during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He was 19 when he enlisted and is from Slater. being shot into the smoky, cloudy night sky, and his squadron dropping bombs between the flares. This act enabled General Patton’s forces to enter Germany.

At 19, Staff Sergeant R.V. Drummond, Eighth Air Force top turret gunner, saved his B17 Flying Fortress from serious damage and his crew members from injury.

After a successful bombing run over marshalling yards of Hannover, Germany, at 24,000 feet, the bomb bay doors failed to shut. At great personal risk, Staff Sergeant Drummond took off his parachute so that he could squeeze into the narrow bomb bay and creep carefully down the narrow catwalk suspended above the open doors.

Viewing the city below (a five mile plunge if slipped) and with a strong wind swirling around him, he stooped and calmly hand cranked for approximately 10 minutes. Finally the doors shut.

In the same year, 1944, Sergeant Drummond was

awarded the Air Medal for “Meritorious achievement while participating in heavy bombardment missions in the air offensive against the enemy over Nazi, Germany.” He received his medal from his squadron commander, Major Howard C. Todt of Audubon, N.J. After returning to the states and being discharged in the latter part of 1945, he attended mortuary school in St. Louis, from 1946 to 1947, and the University of Missouri for approximately four years. As a part of the mortuary school, he and his class traveled to Illinois

to help one of Illinois’s mine disasters.

Our Slater native R.V. Drummond, has witnessed and participated in victories and experienced tragedy while defending the freedom of the United States and its citizens.

Sweet Springs was hometown to Duffey. Shown at 25 years old. He earned the rank of T/5 in the 174th Field Artillery Battalion in the Army. He left New York City in February 1944 by ship, heading to Europe. He was at Normandy Beach for D-Day Invasion. He also fought in Germany.

Marshall resident Duvall has been a member of the Missouri National Guard for over 45 years.

Elsea, a Marshall native, is 21 here. He was in the U.S. Navy, reaching the rank of Lieutenant. He served aboard USS Macon (CA-132) from 1955-1959 as gunfire control division officer. At this time, they were the flagship of the 6th fleet and were involved in evacuating American civilians from Haifa during the 6-day war and then were seaboard platform for testing the Regulus surface to surface missile. They also took part in two Midshipmen training cruises and moved homeport from Norfolk to Boston.

Fischer, from Sweet Springs, was a Sergeant in the Army during Word War II. He was a medic stationed at air bases about 400 miles behind the front lines. These bases would be where they would load the planes with bombs.

His service was from Feb. 5, 1942, to December 1945.

Fisher grew up in Marshall. In this picture, he is 23 years old.

He was a E-5 (Petty Officer 2nd Class) in the Navy. He served from September 1993 to August 1999. Fisher was stationed on the USS Emory S. Land sub-tender as a data systems technician. Since being discharged, he has worked in computer engineering and training for the federal government and state and local governments. Now, he owns his own Internet technology training business and travels worldwide.

Fisher's hometown is Marshall. He earned the rank of E-4 (Petty Officer 3rd Class) in the U.S. Navy.

He was stationed on the USS Independence aircraft carrier as an aviation store keeper and traveled to France, Spain, Italy, British Malta, Turkey, Germany, Israel, Lebanon and was stationed in Puerto Rico for one year. Upon being discharged, he was a police officer in Marshall, reaching rank of Detective Sergeant. He was one of the first canine officers for the Marshall Police Department in 1970. He also joined the Missouri National Guard in 1970.

Flynn was from Slater. He was inducted into the Army on Oct. 30, 1943, when he was 28 years old and did his basic training at Fort Leavenworth. He was Staff Sergeant in the 106th Infantry Division and participated in the Battle of the Bulge in Eastern Belgium. After the “Bulge,” his unit was moved to Bad Ems, Germany, to guard prisoners. Flynn was 31 years old when honorably discharged on Nov. 25, 1945, at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis.

He served in World War II in the U.S. Army as a Technician 4th Grade with the 25th CAV RCN SQDRN from Jan. 25, 1942, to Oct. 21, 1945. He received five Bronze Stars in battles in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He died in Marshall in 2009.

Hayob, a Marshall native, served in the Army Air Corps. “He was a Master Sergeant stationed at the air base in China, which was the headquarters for the P-40 Flying Tigers squadron. He was responsible for coordinating the supply flights flown by C-47 crews in China and the Far East. He told the story about a local young man who worked on the base who became a close friend. The young man’s mother lived in a remote area of China, and Hayob arranged for him to hitch a ride on a cargo flight to see his mother. In appreciation, his mother made a beautiful silk screen, which the family still has.”

Herrmann called the rural Miami/Slater area his home. Photo is of Herrmann later in life wearing his war medal. He was born in Germany in 1820, and came to America in 1854. He served in the Civil War in the Union Army as a Private in Co H, 18th Regiment, MO Infantry from 1861-1865. Herrmann severely injured his left leg in swampy country when marching in the dark between Atlanta, Ga., and Columbia, S.C., with General Sherman’s “march to the sea.”

He set sail for France on Aug. 23, 1918, and landed at Liverpool, England, Sept. 5, 1918. He served in Battery A, 339th Regiment, Field Artillery. The war came to a close on Nov. 11, 1918, and he started for home Jan. 25, 1919. He received his honorable discharge on Feb. 5, 1919.

Hinnah was from Slater. He was part of the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a POW, captured near Stettin Airfield in Germany or Poland. On Feb. 6, 1945, they began “the black march.” He and others continually walked, sleeping in barns and forests until May 2, being liberated at Elbe River.

Hisle enlisted in the Army at 30 years of age, on May 28, 1918, and trained at Camp Dodge, Iowa. He was in the 351st Infantry Company H and served in France from Aug. 6, 1918, to May 31, 1919.

He received his honorable discharge on June 7, 1919.

Hisle is a Miami native. He joined the Marine Corps in April 1943 at the age of 18.

He was based at Fort Pendleton in San Diego for basic training. Then Hisle was sent to Camp Elliot, Calif., for advanced training in Combat Intelligence and rudimentary Japanese. Stationed at Marine Barracks, Honolulu, Hawaii, in November 1943 in the 2nd Marine Division Amphibious Reconnaissance Company. He was discharged at Great Lakeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Training Center, Ill., Jan. 16, 1946. Hisle rejoined the Marine Corps; commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, March 20, 1950. Marine Corps Officers Training, Quantico, Va., June 15, 1951. Camp Pendleton, Calif., November 1951 (Platoon Commander). Cold weather Training, Pickle Meadows, Nev., February 1952.

Marshall resident Latimer was a PFC in the Army at the age of 21.

He had Basic Training for 16 weeks at Fort Bliss, Texas. His “purpose: to protect the city of Chicago from foreign attack. We had to go to upper Lake Michigan two times per year… to fire the guns for practice. Two kinds of targets were provided.

One was a sleeve (a long net) pulled by an airplane, another was an R-Cat (radio controlled), a small 10’ airplane. Ear protection was not provided at the time.

Damage to our hearing was not noticed at the time.”

Lawless (Col USAR Retired), and my mother, Delia M. Lawless (Lt USAR Nurse Corps). I left the Women’s Army Corps in July of 1971, having served my country in a manner in keeping with the highest traditions of military service in the United States Army.”

Lawless Fetter is a native to Marshall. “I spent 8 ½ years in the United States Air Force, entering basic training in June 1992 as an Airman (E-1) and separating with an honorable discharge in January 2001 as a Staff Sergeant (E-5). While in the service, I also was pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. I graduated from Regis University in May 2001 with my degree. I spent six weeks in Basic Training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas, where I learned all the basics of being an airman. I then spent another six weeks at my Technical Training School at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Miss., to learn about my job; Information Management Specialist. After technical training, I was stationed at Plattsburgh AFB, N.Y., from 1992 to 1995, Vandenberg AFB, Calif., from 1995 to 1998 and Peterson AFB, Colo., from 1998 to 2001. I worked in various jobs within the Information Management field; including being a mail clerk in New York, supporting the entire KC -135 base, assistant to the Chief Master Sergeant at the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile unit in California, and, finally, as the NCO Academy’s event coordinator at Peterson AFB in Colorado Springs. I received many honors while I was in the service, and look back on my time serving my country fondly. I am especially proud of the receiving the John L. Levitow award during Airman Leadership School. Overall, I am honored to have served our nation with my service and with so many honorable people.”

I had assignments that gave me experience in the support area of Logistics, Chaplain Service and Special Services. While assigned to the Marine Corps, Headquarters in Arlington, Va., I did everything from warehouse support to post lifeguard.

Leimkuehler, a Slater native, served in the Army. He was at the Battle of the Bulge in Bastone, Germany. His rank: Sergeant E-5, 10th Mountain, 3rd Armored Division. He is shown here with his grandson, William Troy Jacobson.

Miami is hometown for Lemmon. During World War II, Lt. Lemmon was the co-pilot of the B-29 Bombers, named Skyscrapper II and Skscrapper III. He was stationed on the island of Saipan in the Mariana Islands and flew 35 bombing missions over Japan. The missions were 3,000 miles round trip and took 13 to 18 hours depending on the target and weather. The missions were at night, over water, and in the cold since the planks have very little heat. He completed his last mission on July 17, 1945. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, three Air Medals and several Silver Stars. He retired with a rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Lemmon lived in Saline County his entire civilian life. Much of his military memorabilia is displayed at the Nicholas Beazley Aviation Museum in Marshall, Mo.

Murray, a Slater native, was a POW in the Army. During World War II, Murray was stationed in England and was a ball turret gunner on a B-17. He was temporarily blinded when the plane was flying through heavy flak, and broke the plexiglass and gears. After a short hospital stay, he was released with no permanent eye damage.

On his 14th raid, his plane was shot down. His chute was smaller than the others, so he fell faster and away from the rest of the crew. When he landed, a woman and young girl who spoke English took his money and told him to walk with them.

They were trying to help him escape and

Slater native Murray was a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Shown here at about 28 years old. He achieved a rank of 2nd Lieutenant. take him underground. They passed one German soldier, but the second soldier realized he was an American, and the woman said she was turning him in. Murray was taken to the city hall, sat on the floor while the public filed past to shake their fists and yell at him. Other American war flyers being hung at this time, so he was extremely uneasy. After interrogation, Murray was loaded into a very crowded boxcar. They had nothing to eat, very little water, and did not get on or off for three days and two nights.

He arrived at the Stalag 17-B POW camp in Krems, Austria, in pretty rough shape after the long ride. As the men walked up the hill to the prison camp, the Austrain people threw rocks at them. Living conditions were very poor. The men slept eight men to a bunk. The mattresses were made of straw and became infested with lice. They ended up burning the mattress. The camps were also infested with fleas, other bugs and rodents. The showers were located up the hill in the building where the Germans were. Bo had only three showers in the 13 months he was there. Each time the men showered, their heads were shaved. They did receive “three hot meals,” but maybe two were just hot water.

The war was over May 8, 1945. Most of the American prisoners were marched out

of the camp in April 1945. Bo’s right leg was paralyzed, and he stayed with the 110 men who could not walk and were left behind at the camp. On May 12, the Russian troops came in and offered to take the Americans back to Russia. The men did not accept the offer, and on May 13, General Patton's 11th Armored Division entered the camp and took the 110 airmen to the American line in Linz, Austria.

Bo’s brother, Roger Murray, was with the 11th Armored Division, and Bo found out Roger was looking for him. When the last plane was being loaded, there was not enough room for five men. Bo volunteered to wait another three days because he knew his brother was looking for him. After learning Bo was at the airport, Roger drove down the railroad bridge in his jeep and got there just as the plane was taking off. The brothers had three days together before Bo was flown to a Paris hospital for a six-week stay to partially regain the weight he had lost.

During Bo’s stay in prison camp, he read the New Testament four times. Difficult times can be a blessing as we see God working on our lives to fulfill our hopes and calm our fears. Bo said, “I would never want to go through this experience again, but it was all worth it because of freedom for future generations. I would never have lived through all this without God watching over me.”

From then he was dry docked for a month in Boston, Mass., before sailing to Newport, R.I., where he was stationed. His tour included Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Hamburg, Germany and Amsterdam, Netherlands on the USS Davis Diesel Destroyer. The white uniform is summer and the navy blue is worn in the winter.

He served in central Eurpoe, Rhineland, Southern France, Rome-Arno, Naples-Foggis, Sicilian, Tunisian Campaigns. His job was truck driver in the 3rd infantry- 9th, 10th, 15th Artillery & Headquarters.

He hauled rations and water, delivering rations at the Battle of the Bulge and Anzio.

Scott was from the Marshall Junction area. He enlisted Nov. 28, 1942. He was inducted into the Army at Fort Leavenworth; had Basic Training in Sheridan, Calif. He traveled to Algeria, Casablanca, Italy and the Alps.

He was discharged in September 1945, joining the Army National Guard. In 1950, he was called back into service and discharged in 1952, stationed in the United States during this time.

Sims, long time Marshall resident, was a Corporal in the Korean Conflict.

"May 29, 1950, I turned 18 and signed a paper signifying I had reached this age — now eligible to be drafted into the service of our country.

This did not thrill me greatly. America was at war with Korea. I was working on the farm for my dad and often for others who were in need of farm help. One of my main employers was John Viets of the Sweet Springs area. I was very independent, and the thought of giving up my freedom did not thrill me too much.

However, when the official letter came inviting me to go to Kansas City for a physical, I, of course, willingly complied. Of course, I passed with flying colors and soon received a letter to report for duty with the U.S. Army. In other words, I was drafted.

Camp Polk in Louisiana became my home for the next year as I entered into my basic training. It was very difficult, but as a farm-raised boy, I was able to sustain it.

I was part of the motor pool and became the secretary through my time in the service.

The motor pool consisted of putting Army vehicles together.

As secretary, I kept records and served as parts man.

Having good friends like my employer John Viets; he, his

wife and daughter came on holidays and weekends to visit with me at Camp Polk. It was a great joy to be with home folks and learn about home. What great friends they were and how much they meant to me!

The big event happened when the sergeant, who was a bit imbibed, bawled me out unmercilessly — for what, I did not know.

A paper was circulating to volunteer for service in Europe.

I signed up. The transfer was completed and I was to go to New York to board the ship, which would carry about 400 across the Atlantic Ocean to Germany. What an experience!

Many of us were hanging our heads over the edge of the deck as the ship rocked sometimes in a turbulent sea.

A friend, Speck Langewisch, his wife and Betty Viets transported me to New York.

As I remember, it took about a week for us to travel across the ocean on the crew ship. It was a very new feeling to be on a ship where all you could see was water. The most water I had boated on was the Blackwater River; quite a change. Although the trip was scary and stomach churning, it was also thrilling and exciting, an experience never to be forgotten.

We were in Germany about a year. We lived in motel-like rooms — two to a room. Our motor pool continued to work

about the same. It was a bit awkward to be in a country where people spoke a different language, but some of the Germans spoke a broken English, and we were able to piece up enough German to get by. Of course, many German wares

were for sale. I bought a German cuckoo clock.

While at Camp Polk, I had earned my PFC rank, and while in Germany, I earned my Corporal rank. My time in the service ran out before I could get a Sergeant rank.

My time in the service was 1952-1954, and since the war began June 23, 1950, and ended July 27, 1953, our group was not involved in actual combat.

On leave, we were able to visit great places of interest. Of course, Paris, France, was a sight to behold, and the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe, two famous structures, were joys to visit. I went to the top of

each of these structures.

The country I enjoyed visiting most was Holland (now Netherlands). The windmills were a sight to behold. The people were so friendly and clean; I loved seeing them scrub their sidewalks!

The trip back over the ocean seemed less turbulent and passed quickly.

While I enjoyed my service, I realized how lucky I was not to be sent to Korea for combat. We all thought of those of our forces who were involved in the fighting. We respected and thought of them, and hoped for their safe return.

I realized how lucky I was to have gotten in the latter part of the war and to be able to profit from my two years as a part of the U.S. Army, but I was happy to complete my duties and once again to return to my regular life.

I returned to my farm work at the Viets. Then in 1958, I married a school marm and have enjoyed 60 years of another adventure. For almost 50 years, we have lived on our little 20 acres on Wildcat Road with nice neighbors and close to Marshall.

Our two children attended the Marshall schools and were happy in FFA and 4-H. Years have passed quickly, but I treasure my memories and my adventures with the U.S. Army, and am happy to be a veteran.

Smith is a Slater native. She was part of the Army Women’s Army Corps. “Women made a lot of strides since the time my sister served in the Marine Corps. At least my pay was based on rank only, not gender. Basic training has gone co-ed and is not just limited to Fort McClellan, Ala. The pregnancy clause has been taken out of the enlistment contract. More career fields were opening up to women. But a lot of ground is yet to be covered. My experiences in the Army are best summarized as a reflection of the times. My period of service brings to mind such things as the constant struggle to fight against an antiquated stereotype of being less than a lady because I wore a military uniform. I recall a newspaper article my mother mailed to me while i was in basic training, reflecting the recently discontinued practice of allowing the Air Force regional representative the authority to review and reject female applicants based on untouched photos. I think of the box of plastic toy weapons, that we spent a half day discussing, instead of being allowed to go on the week-long field duty scheduled for trainees when it rained. I recall the racial riots at McClellan that put two women from my unit into the hospital and the security measures enforced for weeks afterward. Thank God we had gas masks at our fingertips and had just learned to use them.”

Sprigg, a Marshall native, served in the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.

“Juicy was playing for the Green Bay Packers when he received his draft notice letter telling him to report to Kansas City. Coach Gene Ronzani purchased his bus ticket to Kansas City, where he joined the United States Marine Corps. He was sent to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, Calif.

As a result of a letter from Coach Ronzani to his Officer in Charge, a captain came down to the training area and he was taken out of boot camp training and moved to Special Services.

While playing football for the Marines, Juicy suffered a derangement of the left knee and had major surgery. This meant he would never be able to return to Green Bay to play football. He spent two months at Balboa Hospital in San Diego.

After a great deal of therapy, he was assigned to teach swimming at the Camp Pendleton Training Facility. He saved the lives of many Marines in training when they were instructed to jump in deep water wearing heavy gear. In the news just recently, there was a Marine who drowned doing this very thing as

those in charge did not recognize he was in trouble. Juicy refereed football and basketball and was sent to the Aleutian Islands. The Navy flew him all over to referee their games. Although he never was sent to Korea, the Marine Corps Special Services kept him busy with entertainment for the troops. He also had a desk job that consisted of typing up orders and was thankful he had taken typing classes at Marshall High School.”

Windmeyer, a Grand Pass area native, joined the Army in December 1942. He served during World War II as a Medical Technician 5 with the 727th Amphibious Tractor Battalion in the South Pacific. His awards include the Army Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Arrowhead, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star.

Grand Pass area native Windmeyer is shown at 42 years old. He served in the Air Force from 1974-1999 as a Loadmaster on C-141 transport planes out of MChord AFB, Wash., flying missions primarily in the Pacific and Asia. His missions included Operations: Just Cause in Panama, Deep Freeze to the South Pole, Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Desert Calm in the Middle East, and Upload Democracy in Haiti. He retired after 25 years of honorable service attaining the rank of Master Sergeant. His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal with two Leaves, Aerial Achievement Medal with one Leaf, Air Force Commendation Medal with four Leaves, Achievement Medal with three Leaves, Combat Readiness Medal with six Leaves, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with seven Leaves, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with three Leaves, Humanitarian Service Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabian Govt), Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait), and ribbons.

Marshall native Winning served in the Army during World War II. He was a Technician fifth Grade, D Troop, 90th Calvary Reconnaissance Squadron.

Winning drove an armored Reconnaissance car with 10th armored division in the ETO 15 months. He maneuvered the vehicle in combat so as to bring maximum amount of fire power against the enemy and have the least amount of exposure of main body as possible. He went ahead of the troop to determine the best route to travel. He was awarded three Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal and Presidential Citation awarded to units of the Uniformed services of the United States, and those of allied countries, for extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy.

Slater native Wood was in the Army during World War II. Campaigns included: Aluetian Islands, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central European African Middle Easter Theater, earning three Bronze Stars.

Veterans Day

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning

in 1938. Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans—living or dead—but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.

What is Veterans Day?

Veterans Day occurs on Nov. 11 every year in the United States.

In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day. In 1968, the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed by Congress, which moved the

celebration of Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. The law went into effect in 1971, but in 1975 President Gerald Ford returned Veterans Day to Nov. 11, due to the important historical significance of the date.

Great Britain, France, Australia and Canada also commemorate the veterans of

World War I and World War II on or near Nov. 11: Canada has Remembrance Day, while Britain has Remembrance Sunday (the second Sunday of November).

In Europe, Great Britain and the Commonwealth countries it is common to observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. every Nov. 11.

Veterans today

The military men and women who serve and protect the U.S. come from all walks of life; they are parents, children, grandparents, friends, neighbors and coworkers, and are an important part of their communities. Here are some facts about the veteran population of the United States: •16.1 million living veterans served during at least one war.

•5.2 million veterans served in peacetime.

•2 million veterans are women.

•7 million veterans served during the Vietnam War. •5.5 million veterans served during the Persian Gulf War. •Of the 16 million Americans who served durPAGE 82 — SALINE COUNTY VETERANS 2018

ing World War II, about 558,000 are still alive.

•2 million veterans served during the Korean War. •As of 2014, 2.9 million veterans received compensation for service-connected disabilities.

•The VA health care system had 54 hospitals in 1930, since then it has expanded to include 171 medical centers; more than 350 outpatient, community, and outreach clinics; 126 nursing home care units; and 35 live-in care facilities for injured or disabled vets.
