No, Iʼm from Meridian. I moved here 32 years ago with my then husband.

Where do people recognize you from?

I am a loan officer with BankPlus in Quitman.

I have worked there 37 years.

What do you enjoy outside of work?

I love to read and spend time with my grandchildren. I volunteer with different churches, Relay for Life, and have volunteered at the Clarke County Wildlife Festival through BankPlus. I also attend White Oak Springs Baptist Church.

Tell us about your family.

I have two daughters, Lynchelle King, who lives in Tupelo, Miss., where she is a team leader at the Toyota plant, and Dr. Keisha Konradi, who lives in Huntsville, Ala., where she is a dentist. I also have one grandson, Trace, who is 14, and twin granddaughters, Leiannah and Levannah, who are three weeks old.

Why Clarke County?

I came to Clarke County when my ex-husbandʼs job transferred him to Quitman.

I chose to stay here for the past 32 years because of the people that I have met in the community. I have met some of the sweetest people here that make me feel just like I am a part of family. I know that Quitman is not shielded from crime, but thereʼs less crime here compared to some of the other cities. C C LA

BEAR BRYANT AND FOOTBALL Back in his prime, Rick Rozzell flourished in sports, in particular football. Although he didnʼt spend his childhood in Clarke County, he landed here. His love of football started in high school, and he went on to play for Bear Bryant.

Q: Tell me how you got started.

A: I played at Pascagoula High School and was top recruit out of high school and second recruit in Mississippi. We were 12-0 my junior year. That was the most fun Iʼve ever had. We won state that year. We still have reunions every five years. Thatʼs what football is all about, making a family out of the team.

Q: How did you get chosen to play for Alabama?

A: Coach Bryant recruited me - came to my house. He was always a gentleman.

My parents liked him more than anything. Dad was more about me going to Alabama than I was. I really wanted to go to Ole Miss. Bryant picked up everyone that was good out of state so they wouldnʼt go to Ole Miss, but I already had my mind made up to go to Alabama anyway because of the National Championship.

When you show a boy a ring, they decide thatʼs not a bad program to be in.

Q: How was your experience at Alabama?

A: Football is fun in high school, but in college, it becomes a sport. You earn your scholarship, and you practice hard. Itʼs not all fun and games.

I spent the first three years at Alabama red shirted. All I

did was practice and learn those years.

We won the National Championship in 1978 and 1979. I either lost my ring or it was stolen.

When we had meetings before practice and Coach Bryant came into the meeting room, the boys knew not to be late. When he walked in you could hear a pin drop. Thatʼs how much respect he had. He would go over the game plan and basically get down to our life stories. He wanted each one of us to have a great life after football. He tried to build his players up and be successful in life, not just football.

He taught me what football was really about. All I knew in high school is go getʼem. In college, you have a position, and you are part of a team.

Q: What happened after you left Alabama?

A: I got to where I wasnʼt happy. Some of the boys were on the team for five years but didnʼt get to play until their fifth year.

I wanted to play then, so I transferred to Delta State my sophomore year, and it gave me my junior and senior years to play. Some went pro, some didnʼt. I was close but didnʼt make it. I did play with LA Express back then, but it didnʼt last long.

Resurrected hope

“To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified” (Isaiah 61:3 KJV).

While this verse may simply be inspiring for some, it is the anthem for a new ministry in Clarke County: Resurrected Hope Womenʼs Ministry. Krystal Dearman has had her own ministry for years and would speak at various churches or events, but she always dreamed of doing womenʼs conferences because she has a heart for women and helping them find the Lord in different ways.

While she initially just thought of the womenʼs conferences as a dream, the Lord saw more for her and used a close friend to move her to action.

“I had a friend call me, and her team was coming here from Oklahoma. She asked me that if she could make anything happen for me in my ministry, then what would I want it to be. I said it would be awesome to have a womenʼs conference,” recalled Krystal. “We only had three Fa l l

or four weeks until they were supposed to be here, and I didnʼt think we could plan a conference in that time. She told me that the Lord told her to let me know to take the lid off and dream bigger than I ever have.”

She followed what she felt the Lord calling her to do. She knew she wouldnʼt be able to do it on her own, but she was able to link up with someone else who had her own ministry.

Together, the two of them did what she originally thought was impossible and organized their first womenʼs conference in three or four short weeks. The turnout for the event confirmed that they were doing exactly what God was calling them to do.

“The next day, I met with a friend, Taylor Skinner, and she is the other half of Resurrected Hope. She had her own ministry, and sheʼs done some things for grieving mothers and women who have trouble with miscarriages and carrying children. We met for lunch. I told her about the conference in my heart, and we both knew right then that we were supposed to do it together. We just combined our ministries,” stated Krystal. “We wanted women to see a different way

of living and have a freedom and joy like theyʼve never found. We planned our first conference in March 2021. That was before we were officially Resurrected Hope Womenʼs Ministry. We just did it together, and it was absolutely incredible. We were supposed to have a limit of 100, and I think we had 130 people there. It sold out and confirmed to us how hungry women are for more community and ways to dig deeper in the word.”

It was after this first event that they officially started Resurrected Hope Womenʼs Ministry. They thrived on the verse in Isaiah and knew that it would help them as they fulfilled the mission of the new ministry.

“Our mission in general is really to equip women with scripture and truth to believe that God can and will use every situation for His glory and our good.

The Lord gave us a scripture, and we know that He tells us He brings beauty from ashes,” explained Krystal. “We use that to explain to women that even through the hard and painful seasons that God can bring something beautiful from that, and because of that, weʼre able to walk out our purpose.”

In order to live out their mission, Krystal and Taylor make sure that they are as transparent as possible about their own lives. They want others to see that although they do not have perfect lives and go through hardships, God is still able to use them and has a plan for them.

“We have really tried to be very transparent about our own lives. We were both just walking out of a season of pain in our own lives and trying to figure out what we could do with that and what our purpose was. God took all of our pain and doubts, and He really resurrected our hope that we thought was lost,” expressed Krystal. “The general idea is just that when you think that all hope is lost, the resurrected God can resurrect your hope and turn it into something beautiful, and we feel like you find

your purpose.”

They didnʼt stop with just their first conference in March. By June, the new ministry had already arranged its second conference, and the Lord blessed it by multiplying the number of women who took part in it.

“We had a second conference in June. We had it at North Park in Meridian. We sold 400 tickets for that one. The Lord just quadrupled the number of

women. We had about 350 who actually came, and it was an incredible time. Weʼve had testimonies from multiple women after that who were set free from shame, bondage, and sin and those who just found such a deep joy,” declared Krystal. “The name of that conference was Seasons of Still. Taylor, Heidi Clearman from Florida, and I spoke at the event. The Lord gave us all messages that were different but the same in that they were all about the seasons of still and what to do in those seasons that are just so hard or confusing.”

Although it originally started with just Krystal and Taylor, they had more volunteers and team members by the time they did the second conference.

“We have two other ladies that are heavily involved and part of Resurrected Hope. One of those ladies is Wendy Stephens, and she does a lot of behind the scenes work and is our accountant. My mom, Cindy Garrett, is the other lady involved, and she has a long history of helping in ministries in general,” said Krystal.

“We have a list of volunteers who have helped at both of the conferences weʼve done, and we consider them part of our team as well.”

As much as they love hosting the different conferences and making an impact on the lives of women, they are also aware that sometimes it may become difficult for women when they enter back into their day to day lives and are no longer surrounded with likeminded individuals with the same goals and needs. This has caused the ministry to organize another type of event just so they can equip women with what they need to be able to grow closer to Christ and experience life in a different way every day.

“Weʼre actually having what we call an equip day where there are breakout sessions on certain topics—marriage, prayer, faith, joy, etc. Itʼll be from 8-3 on a Saturday where youʼll come in and have breakfast with us,” informed Krystal. “There will be six sessions, but you can choose four of them to go to. We want to equip women more and give them things they can implement in their

lives on the different topics.”

With the success the ministry has already seen since its whirlwind start at the beginning of the year, Krystal can only attribute it to Godʼs perfect timing and knowing exactly what women really need right now.

“I think God is stirring a lot of this up because over the last year we lost a lot of community, and a lot of people fell between the cracks and struggled; everybody was keeping to themselves and may not have even noticed or just stayed to themselves if they did notice,” declared Krystal. “I feel like the Lord launched this at the right time to say that He has a plan for you and that there is nothing that you have done or can do that can mess that up.”

The ministry group is for women everywhere, and they have multiple goals that they would like to accomplish to continue to help women all over the area.

“We cross all denominational borders because weʼre not a denomination. We each have our own home churches, but we arenʼt affiliated with any church. Our main goal is just to focus on what is really important,” explained Krystal. “Our goal is to do conferences about three or four times a year. Weʼd like to do a couple of equip days a year. We just released our first table talk, which is a video where we sit around a table and discuss different things. Eventually, we will release a few of these series.”

Krystal and Taylor are also willing to come speak with individual churches on a smaller basis if they are asked.

They simply want to help women have a closer relationship with God. By simply following His will and guidance, Resurrected Hope Womenʼs Ministry will definitely make a change in the lives of women everywhere in the upcoming months and years.

Catfish Ingredients • 2 lbs fresh catfish filets • 1 bag of Louisiana Fish Fry • canola oil for frying Directions • After rinsing catfish, pat dry with paper towels to remove water. • In a shallow bowl add desired amount of Louisiana fish fry • Heat oil in a deep fryer to about 350 degrees F • Coat each fish filet in the Fish Fry mixture and shake off the excess. • Fry the catfish for 3-5 mins per side (or total if deep frying), or until it's as crispy as desired • Drain on paper towels.

Recipe Catfish, Cajun Rice and Potato Salad

Potato Salad Ingredients • 3 lbs Russet potatoes, peeled, cubed, and cooked until tender • 8 large eggs, boiled and peeled • 1/2 cup onion, diced • 3 cups Miracle Whip • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard • 1 teaspoon paprika • 1 teaspoon onion powder • 2 tablespoons sugar • 1 tablespoon lemon juice • 1 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper Directions • In a bowl, chop eggs until separated • In a separate bowl combine miracle whip, mustard, onion, lemon juice, sugar, and all other seasons. • Add dressing to cooled potatoes and mix gently. • Lastly add in chopped eggs.

Cajun Rice Ingredients • 1 lb ground beef • 2 tbsp worcestershire sauce • 1 md. green bell pepper, diced • 1 lg. onion, diced • 2c long grain rice (Zatarain's or Uncle Ben's) • 3 cloves of garlic/or minced garlic • salt, black & cayenne pepper to taste • 1 can (14.5 oz) beef broth • 3-4 oz water or as needed • 2 tsp cajun/creole seasoning, or to taste • 2 bay leaves Directions • In a saucepan, sauté the beef until no pink remains. Drain all but 3 tbsp from the pan. • Add the bell pepper and onions. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Cook for 5-7 minutes until the veggies begin to soften and brown. • Add the rice, green onions, and garlic; continue to stir for 1-2 minutes until the rice begins to toast or turn brown. • Add in worcestershire sauce, beef stock, creole seasoning, and bay leaves. • Mix well, turn the heat to low, cover and simmer for 20 minutes. • Cook until the rice is fully tender, and the broth has been absorbed. Stir well and remove from heat.

Residents all over Clarke County love coming to eat the amazing Mexican food at Los Totopos. Owners Miguel and Javier Oregon, love their restaurant and the community. Miguel opens up about the beloved restaurant.

Q: What is your favorite dish on the menu?

A: My favorite dish is the Special 50, and itʻs also my customersʼ favorite. I like the spice effect of the rice, grilled chicken, shrimp, steak, and pico de gallo all cooked together on the grill, and the cheese sauce on top. It just has everything all combined together.

Q: What is your inspiration for the restaurant?

A: It runs in the family. My mama and papa had a restaurant back in Mexico. Iʼve been in the business with them and cooking all my life.

Then, my oldest brother, Antonio, started this restaurant. We came over from Mexico to work for him. My brother and I bought it from him. Iʼve just always been involved in the food business.

Q: What’s your inspiration for the menu?

A: Iʼm just trying to make people feel like theyʼve gone to Mexico but on a different level so that they will feel more comfortable. Everything is a lot hotter in Mexico as far as spicy hot. We try to calm it down a little bit so that people can handle it and actually enjoy the flavor.

Q: How do you cook the food?

A: We make everything from scratch. We even batter the fried chicken by hand. Nothing is pre-cooked. We make everything fresh every day.

We even make our seasonings from scratch. It just makes everything taste better!

Q: What’s your favorite thing about the restaurant?

A: My favorite thing is doing the cooking and people letting us know that they enjoyed what we cooked. It makes me feel good. Itʼs all about keeping everybody happy.

Q: Are there any new dishes at the restaurant?

A: We now have some street tacos. Those are a corn tortilla with chicken, steak, or shrimp, and it has cilantro, onions, lime, and hot sauce. Itʼs something that comes from Mexico. We also have the Mexican burger now. You have a regular burger and then add eggs and chorizo sauces, guacamole, and jalapenos. We have the shrimp diablo, too. Thatʼs grilled shrimp with grilled onions and hot sauce. We cook it in hot sauce and put it with rice and beans. Weʼre trying to bring some different items.

Q: What are your future plans for the business?

A: Hopefully in the near future, Iʼm going to bring in some new chairs and new tables. Some that I like have a lot of Mexican features. I just want to remodel it a little and keep it clean and well kept. I have a lot of ideas, but it just takes time.

Finding Our Person

How We Met

When Shecori Finley and Maurice Sanders first met, it was an unexpected meeting that ended up being love at first sight. What started as a fun night of karaoke turned into a whirlwind love story where they didnʼt even have to formally acknowledge that they were a couple. They just knew and enjoyed every moment together.

“It was two weeks after I graduated from MCC in 2018. We met in May 2018 at a place in downtown Meridian. I met with some friends there on a Thursday night for some karaoke. No one was meeting for dates or anything, but Maurice and I had some mutual friends. He ended up walking over to tell me congratulations on my graduation, and I told him thank you. We ended up sitting and talking throughout the night,” remembered Shecori. “Then, he somehow got my number and gave me his and told me to text so he could make sure I got home safely. We just started texting back and forth after that and wound up a couple without actually saying that we were together. Things just happened so fast.”

The Proposal: When Maurice decided he was ready to propose, he came up with the perfect plan by going back to how their relationship first started. Karaoke was an important part of their relationship from the beginning, and he made sure to use karaoke to take the next step in their relationship.

“On New Yearʼs Day in 2020, he proposed at his home. Since we met at karaoke night, he did a night of karaoke. He sang my favorite song, Happily Ever After. He was singing that on karaoke and then proposed last thing in his song. I thought he was just singing, but he proposed during the song,” reminisced Shecori. “All of my family, his family, and our friends were there. There were a lot of people there, and everyone knew what was going to happen except me.”

The Dress:

Shecori had the dress of her dreams special made by someone in the Phillipines. She described every detail of what she wanted, from the color, length, and amount of sparkle she wanted it to have. She ordered her gold gown for the wedding itself and a white dress to change into at the reception. While they were able to make the gown of her dreams, not everything was going to plan, and Shecori had a moment of crisis when it appeared her dress would not arrive in time for the wedding.

“On Tuesday, the week of the wedding, I saw my dress on a video. To add more flame to the fire, my dress didnʼt arrive until 6:28 a.m. on June 26. I did not physically see the dress until Saturday, June 26, about 4:20 p.m. I lost it a little Friday night and just sat there and silently cried. I was hurt more than anything. I had been told that my dress wouldnʼt make it until Monday afternoon. I F a l l 2 0 2 1

didnʼt have another plan for what to do. I had two wedding dresses: one for the wedding and one for the reception. Both dresses were in the same package, so I did not have a backup plan. This was the day before the wedding, and all I could do was cry. Not many people knew any of this was going on because I didnʼt want to make people panic.

My wedding coordinator was there with me for the whole thing and was calling and trying to see what he could do, but they couldnʼt even find the package at the time. My friend called and asked what I was going to do, and I told her I was just going to find some nice jeans and a shirt.

I was still going to get married, regardless of what was going on. My friend told me no and told me to get up right then and go to a bridal shop and find a dress,” recalled Shecori. “I went to Mimiʼs Bridal in Laurel and asked to look around even though I didnʼt have an appointment. I told them I needed to buy and walk out with the dress that day because I was getting married the next day. I found a beautiful gown that I would have worn if mine didnʼt come in. In the process of all this, my friends, families, and coworkers stepped up and offered to buy me the dress. I was just blessed all the way around. Before I made the final purchase on the dress, my coordinator called and said to please not buy the dress. He said he was going to do whatever it takes to get my wedding gown. He told me he had people at the warehouse searching for my wedding gown and not to buy a new dress. Mimiʼs told me that if I donʼt have it by the next morning that I would need to call them by 7:30 a.m. so they could quickly do the alterations I needed on the dress and someone could come pick it up. I ended up getting a notification at 6:28 the morning of the wedding saying my package would be delivered between 10:30-2:30. My aunt went to Quitman and picked up my dress.”

The Wedding:

Other than starting a little later than anticipated, her wedding went flawless. True to her nature, she made sure to incorporate different things into her wedding that made it a little extra special from the beginning.

“Because I didnʼt get married in a church, I wanted the atmosphere to be blessed; therefore, we started off with a devotion, a gospel song, and a prayer,” said Shecori. “I just feel like we have to have God in the midst of it before we can prosper.”

She also included a surprise for Maurice during the wedding by doing something big to honor his mom who passed away before the couple met.

“Mauriceʼs mom passed away prior to us meeting, and his only request was to have a picture or something to honor her. My girls have been dancing with Kaila Lawson since they were little, and I asked Kaila if she would mind doing a surprise tribute, and she said she was honored to do it. She did a praise dance tribute to a dedication song called ʻMama,ʼ and I chose the version Mama in Heaven,” informed Shecori. “I had a surprise painting of his mom done on a big canvas and had our children walk that down. Kaila came in behind them and did her tribute dance. She was dressed in all white and some angel wings.”

She also made sure to include everyone in the families since they would now be blended together as one.

“Since we are a blended family, at the end of the wedding, we did a family prayer over all of us,” declared Shecori. “One of my bridesmaids actually said the Lordʼs Prayer over our entire family. It was beautiful.”

“We started looking at the house when we were dating. We had driven by it a couple times. When we got engaged, we seriously started looking into it. The only way we were able to do it was to do the work ourselves. My dad came down a few times to help us,” added Sasha.

The house was built in 1972 or 73 and was owned by the Gay family that owned Gay Doors. The house had not been lived in since the 80s. They listed it for sale in 2016, and it basically had been sitting there empty.

“It was in pretty bad shape,” stated Sasha. “My dad is a contractor, so he came and inspected the house, along with the foundation to see if it was worth flipping.”

Josh - Itʼs still a work in progress. We have about three more years of renovations, including the mother-inlaw suite, outside painting, building a screened in porch and outdoor kitchen, screened in balcony, coffee bar, changing windows out upstairs, and adding bookshelves to make a library.

DOING WHAT YOU LOVE Space Cowboy by Steve Miller

Iʼve been singing since I was real young, around 5-6 years old; not professionally, but like riding in the car. I remember that was some really good times and remembering I was really good at it. As far as playing, I got my first guitar at 13.

Iʼve got an on-line service that I use to help me called Distro Kid. I have a studio Iʼve put together in there. Itʼs not professional, but I think itʼs pretty descent. Iʼve been putting stuff on Itunes and Amazon Music.

Itʼs the one thing that when I do it, itʼs natural. I still work really hard at it. Itʼs the only thing I can say that Iʼve done that just feels right, and I donʼt have to force it. It comes easy to me, and at the same time I still want to do it.

Song writing - I like hearing stuff like funny little sayings that kind of sound like they should go together but you donʼt normally hear, and writing a story around that - like 12 Gauge and Jesus. Basically, I saw a sign that says, if you break in my house, you should stand outside and get right with Jesus first. That was kind of the inspiration for that one.

I love what Iʼm doing. Being able to write the songs that Iʼm writing, thatʼs some kind of legacy. Maybe someday the kids can show their friends.

An Aerial Small children, and even adults, will stand still while looking straight up at the sky, enamored by the airplane flying overhead. Over the years, that fascination with planes can continue to grow. Some build on their captivation with flight and make flying either their occupation or a hobby.

For Dr. Blake Thomas, he took on a new hobby with planes by building and flying small remote control planes of his own.

“Iʼve always been interested in little mechanical things like this, and it was fun building them.

The technology of being able to stand on the ground and watch something fly around and be able to control it was always interesting to me,” expressed Blake. “I started doing this in about 2005 and was really involved with it for about seven years, and then I got real busy with life.”

Like learning to fly a real airplane, most start out with a friend or instructor. They allow the more experienced person to link up a master remote control so that the other person can take over if something were to go wrong during the flight. Blake chose a different route, though. He invested in a starter plane that could withstand crashes more and trained himself how to use it.

“I learned on my own. I never had a buddy system. I just learned and crashed and built and re-glued and got them back up and flying,” explained Blake. “I started off with a trainer.

The trainers, for the most part, are ready to fly.

You take them out of the box, and they have minimal, if any, build required. A rubber band holds the wings on, and it comes with its own radio. Itʼs pretty much set to go.”

Once he was used to flying the planes, he decided to purchase kits to build his own. Now, he has a variety of planes that he is able to control.

“More than flying them, I enjoy building them. I enjoy the process of building. These are considered an ARF, or almost ready to fly. You still have to put them together. You still have to mount the motor. You still have to mount the little controls that function the ailerons, the stabilizer, and the rudder. All of that has to be put together. It usually takes me about a week working on it every night to put one together. Itʼs about 15-20 hours to put together,” informed Blake.

“Most of my planes are little two cycle engines, but I do have one four cycle one. Some of these Iʼve never flown, but most of them I have. I do have one or two electric, but most of them are nitromethane. You put the fuel in the engine, crank it, and then the remote control takes over. The remote controls the throttle, the ailerons, and the stabilizer.”

Although all of his planes are remote controlled, each plane tends to fly differently. Some of his planes are more acrobatic, while others tend to fly more leisurely. No matter what, he makes sure to pay attention so that he can fully control the plane and land it safely.

“You can do tricks with them, and each one flies differently. My blue and white plane is more of an acrobatic plane, and the yellow one is a little slower. If I input for the yellow one to turn, it does it more slowly. If I barely mash turn on the other one, itʼll go on its side and then turn upside down,” stated Blake. “If you turn your head and arenʼt paying complete attention to it youʼre going to crash, lose it, or both. Theyʼre fun to fly, though. Even if you run out of gas or the power is cut, itʼs not an automatic disaster. I have run out of gas before and was able to use the controls to help it glide in and land it. Some planes glide better than others.”

While he does love his planes, he has also discovered something he loves even more: helicopters.

“I enjoy the helicopters more. Theyʼre more difficult to learn to fly and manage. An airplane tends to be a little more stable than the helicopter. I never got really

adept at it, but I could get them to hover and could fly them around a little bit. You donʼt really want to crash something like this,” declared Dr. Blake. “Everything about a helicopter is more time consuming and labor intense. The technology on them is the same as a Blackhawk helicopter. They even make jet engines; these things can be jet powered.”

While there are clubs and groups who get together to fly their planes and helicopters together, Dr. Blake has always preferred to fly on his own.

“There are groups who get together to fly. Typically I would go and watch them, but I never really felt comfortable flying in front of them,” stated Dr. Blake. “I would just go to my own land and fly and have fun. At one time, I had some land out east of Quitman, and I did have a little landing strip that I kept. I would go out and fly it there.”

While he hasnʼt been able to thoroughly enjoy his hobby over recent years from an intense work schedule, Dr. Blake does hope to be able to take his planes and helicopters back out for a flight again soon and build some more of his amazing airplanes.

Enterprise has a richer history than most can imagine.

From starting out as an Indian Trading Post, being a Prisoner of War Camp during the Civil War where the north actually fought alongside the Confederates, and even being the Capitol for a day, it has played an integral part of the stateʼs history. Evidence of its glory days can still be found all over Enterprise, allowing anyone who finds some of the remnants to catch a glimpse of what it was like to live in Enterprise from the beginning.

Information was provided by Laurence Buckley, Christine J. Buckley, and the Historic Clarke County book.

•1699: A Jesuit priest was sent by Dʼiberville to visit the famous (Enterprise) Indian Trading Post. Jesuit Fathers were placed in charge of a mission, which was in operation until 1733.

•1801-1832: The U.S. Government began to purchase areas from the Indians, finally acquiring the title to the area of Alabama and Mississippi.

•1830: Dancing Rabbit Creek Treaty was signed.

•1834: Enterprise was founded by John J. McCrae who later became governor of the State of Mississippi.

•1839: Enterprise was incorporated with streets and alleys laid out and named. The town was on the West side.

•1840: The Baptist Church was built.

“Back in the days, they used to have ceremonies where they would celebrate July the Fourth and everything. They would have a band that rode the railroad from Mobile to Enterprise. They would bring their military band up, and it was the Mobile Volunteers,” stated Laurence Buckley. “A person sent me an article from a newspaper in Alabama that mentioned that the band members sat under the trees in the grove in Enterprise off of Front Street. A guy in Enterprise, Todd Corbitt, found a belt buckle from 1840 that most likely belonged to one of the band members of the Mobile Volunteers.”

•1856: The Mobile and Ohio Railroad came to Enterprise.

With the new railroad on the East side of town, the Enterprise Academy School was built.

•1863: When Sherman captured Jackson, the Capitol was moved to Enterprise for a day and then on to Meridian.

This happened in May. •1864: In February, Shermanʼs troops entered Enterprise and destroyed most of the town. Then, he sent his troops to Quitman.

“When Sherman sent his troops through Enterprise, he told them not to burn the private homes. We had a lot of warehouses because it was a central location for river traffic and the railroad came right by it. He told them to only burn the warehouses and stuff like that,” informed Laurence. “They had about 3,000 bales of cotton that were in a warehouse that they moved down to Mobile by train to get it out before Shermanʼs troops came in. There were no troops in Enterprise by the time Shermanʼs troops came in. They were all gone to Mobile or Demopolis.”

The Quitman courthouse was burned by Shermanʼs troops, and the county courthouse was moved to Enterprise for six years.

The courthouse was located near the Mrs. Billy Mitts home.

•1867: The town was very large and flourishing at the time. They formed a large brass band and had a big Mardi Gras celebration each year.

“For Mardi Gras, they would always have a parade in Enterprise on Front Street, and it was a big thing. My grandfather was the Krewe King,” expressed Buckley.

•1871: A great flood at Enterprise •1874: The business district was destroyed for the second time by fire.

“Bedbugs were to blame. A family was trying to get rid of bedbugs by fire when the fire escaped due to a strong wind. The fire burned the familyʼs store and most of the other stores,” (Historic Clarke County).

•1900: A flood destroyed the school on the East side. A mass meeting was held to vote for a new location for the Enterprise School on the West side of the river.

•1910: The first golf course in Mississippi was built at East Enterprise in the sand flats.

•1913: The Enterprise Bank closed when the sawmills went out of business.

•1929-1930: A new iron bridge was built over the Chickasawhay River.

•1940: Old Enterprise businesses on the East side burned, except Bass Brothers and the U.S. Post Office.

•1982: The last store on the East side was sold to the state for the river bridge expansion. Laurence B. Buckley, Sr. was the store owner.

With the abundance of history that Enterprise possesses, there are many artifacts from over the years that many enjoy finding. These treasure hunters have different methods of finding the different pieces of history, but one thing they have in common is a deep appreciation and love for the history that each artifact represents.

Todd Corbitt has loved treasure hunting since his dad introduced it to him when he was a teenager. While some search for the different pieces in order to make a profit, Todd is more enthralled with the historical significance of each thing he finds.

“Iʼve been treasure hunting since I was about 14 years old. My dad got me into looking for the different artifacts,” stated Todd. “Itʼs worth more than money to me. Just know-

ing that someone in the past was the last one to touch it and that it came from here in Enterprise is enough for me. I generally keep anything I find from here just because of the historical meaning of it.”

He has found a variety of items that reflect the different times in history. Sometimes based on what type of item and how many he has found, he can even deduce what was most likely around a certain area at the time.

“Iʼve found arrowheads that are probably 800-2,000 years old. The forts had an Indian trading post. The Indians were here first, and then settlers came and started making towns,” expressed Todd. “In one place, I found over 100 horseshoes, marbles, and blacksmith tools. That gave me the idea that there was a livery stable in that area.”

He has found many things in the creeks and river in Enterprise and uses his knowledge of history to piece together plausible reasons for some of his finds.

“I always look in the creek for dumps, and in one creek I found over five sewing machines. What I think happened was when the Yankees came through this area, they burned anything the Confederates had that would help them because they didnʼt want them to be able to make clothes and everything. I think they burned the sewing machines and dumped them in the creek when they came through,” informed Todd. “I also found my oldest coin on the river. It was an 1834 silver quarter stuck in the bedrock.”

Although Todd prefers to keep anything he finds, he has had a rare occasion of selling an item so that he could purchase new equipment. What he sold was actually his favorite item that heʼs found so far.

“I donʼt usually sell anything that I find, but I did sell one thing so that I could get some money for better equipment. It was a pre-militia belt buckle that had MR on it. I was hoping it would be Mississippi Rifles, which Jefferson Davis started, but it was Mobile Rifles,” declared Todd. “Iʼm proudest of finding that buckle. It was dated 1840, and Enterprise became a town in 1834.”

Todd is very respectful of any family who allows him to treasure hunt on their land. He makes sure to leave the land without any holes and doesnʼt keep anything he finds a secret. He allows the family to see what he discovers and even allows them to keep it if they want.

He only wants to discover and share different things from history.

“When Iʼm asking permission to search on someoneʼs property, Iʼll usually tell them that I will show them what I find, and they can keep it if they would like.

I just want to be the person who found it,” conveyed Todd. “If they want to look with me, Iʼll show them how.

I do it to save history and learn, and I like to share it with people.”

He loves to be able to go out and treasure hunt, and he hopes to continue to uncover remnants of Enterpriseʼs past to share with others as the years go by.

Like other treasure hunters in the area, Dean Siebert loves to find and preserve different historical artifacts. He has been treasure hunting for many years, and his interest was sparked by simply trying to find something to do after experiencing a loss in his life.

“Right after my mother died, I had to get out of the house,” recalled Dean. “I went swimming one day and found a scuba mask in the river. I went diving and found a coin. Thatʼs what triggered my treasure hunting.”

Dean doesnʼt rely on technology to find his different treasures. Instead, he simply uses his eyes and an old pioneer method.

“Like the pioneers did back in the 1800s looking for gold, I use the same principle in the creek. I use a cooking pan for grills that has hundreds of holes in it. I just shuffle the pan for the sand to get washed out, and I dig out the big rocks. Iʼve dug up giant shark teeth and a silver button.

dug up a whiskey bottle and a civil war button. The button has gold on it and has MVC on it. Itʼs Mississippi Volunteers.”

Despite being hard work, his methods have produced some big results over the years. He has found a ton of things that span thousands of years: arrow heads, shark teeth, cannon balls, money, gold needle trapped in rock, foolʼs gold, Indian axes, spear heads, whiskey jugs, unidentified item that is possibly a saber tooth tiger tooth or claw, Indian clay pipe, metal tools and objects, handcuffs from the 1800s, amber, Civil War bullets and ammunition, guns, etc.

He has also discovered some truly unique items on his searches.

“I found a ceramic Buddha temple in the Chunky River. Itʼs old and probably came from India. We heard stories from people that they had a trading post up there in Chunky, and people would come by and spend the night, and the owner of the hotel would kill them: Stuckey. Thatʼs where thatʼs from,” stated Dean. “Iʼve even dug up a dinosaurʼs toenail.

Weʼre not sure what the specific dinosaur is, but itʼs one of the herbivores. Iʼve also found Megalodon teeth.”

His finds have allowed him some great memories and stories to tell when he sees each piece that he has collected.

“I was diving one day, and I came across a coin that was a Mexican Peso. I dug up over 1,000 of them,” Dean reminisced. “I found a whiskey jug in the creek, and it came from God. My friend Danny and I were walking in the creek one day, and I looked up at the sky and asked God to give me a whiskey jug. Two weeks later, God granted my wish. I walked out in my yard and heard this voice saying to go check out the creek, so I went and checked out the creek. I walked around the bend, and there sat a perfectly good whisky jar full of sand and rocks and water just sitting on a stump.”

With the great memories and history he has found over the years, Dean gladly continues his favorite hobby when he is not busy helping others or working around the house. Like other treasure hunters, he will continue to go out and collect as much history as he can to preserve and use to teach others.

WINDING DOWN THE

Chickasawhay River “Rivers are places that renew our spirit, connect us with our past, and link us directly with the flow and rhythm of the natural world” (Ted Turner).

This has definitely been the case with the Chickasawhay River that goes through Clarke County. Many have found the river to be a place of respite and visit it to escape the turmoil of life.

It also carries history in its waters, and many who swim, FISH, and float in the river have discovered various treasures in its waters and along the banks. Many are able to say they have found shark teeth in the waters, particularly around Doby’s Bluff. BROTHERS Jeffrey and Steve Glass have even managed to find civil war history and evidence of those who have passed away in its waters.

“When Sherman did his famous march through Clarke County, one of his targets was the railroad bridge. They would heat the metal from the tracks and wrap them around trees so that they couldn’t be used again.

They were called Sherman bowties. We found a Sherman bowtie while swimming and donated it to the Clarke County Historical Society,” stated Jeffrey. “I’ve also found a headstone in the river, but I wasn’t able to get it out of the sand. I just know it had the last name Chancellor on it.”

Although the river is rich in history, most people just enjoy being in its waters to fish or simply float down it. Many have even grown up with the river and have great childhood memories from it. Robert Donald, Jeffrey, and Steve are three individuals who have always loved the river.

“We grew up on the Chickasawhay. When we were kids and Friday afternoon came, if it was camping weather, we would get Archie Duke’s boat and no one would see us again until Sunday evening,” reminisced Robert. “We’d get us some Vienna sausage and just something to live off of if we didn’t catch any fish, and we’d spend a weekend on the river. We’d pitch a tent and camp out, probably never in the same place twice.”

At one point, Robert even tried to share his love of the river with others by opening his own canoe business.

“I’ve owned a canoe rental business, BUT I sold it about eight years ago. I would put them in over here on the boat ramp, and they would flow from here to DeSoto or Shubuta,” stated Robert. “I’d meet them down at those places and pick them up and haul the canoes back. I did that for about two years and then quit.”

Like Robert, Jeffrey and Steve’s love of the river started when they were young boys just helping their dad.

One of the best ways to relax after dealing with constant stress and worry is to simply hop in a boat and float down the Chickasawhay River. The soothing sound of the swift current is enough to make people relax as they are gently carried around countless bends and turns.

Sunlight breaks through the branches of the many trees lining the riverbanks and reflects off the muddy brown waters like diamonds, creating a dazzling sight. The banks of the river seamlessly transition from steep banks covered in greenery to bright white sandbars beckoning for someone to rest on their sandy beaches.

Anyone with a sharp eye and knows the river watches for the gentle rush of swirling water in the middle of the river, indicating some form of debris beneath the surface. Small creeks branch out from the mighty river at different intervals, creating a small haven to explore.

Along the way, trees are draped over the water or have fallen in, allowing their branches to provide a home for many of the fish in the river. Birds joyfully sing as they dart around, seemingly racing the fish beneath the water.

It doesnʼt take long to begin going under different bridges, most of which tell the history of the county. The old railroad bridge stands proudly after being rebuilt following Shermanʼs march through the area burning down everything in his path during the Civil War. Other bridges bear record of years gone by when locals took advantage of flood stage waters to paint initials and dates on the bottom of the bridge, such as 7/21/41.

Beautiful cabins are perched along the upper banks, and some of them have created their own boat ramps leading down to the waters.

Further down, Dobyʼs Bluff appears with its high white walls. The smell of fish grows even stronger since the area is well-known for having an abundance of fish. There is a metal rod placed in the center that is able to be seen when the water is down, and its primary purpose is to hold fishing nets to catch the many fish that are swimming through the area.

The languid trip and beautiful sights and sounds are enough to create tranquility in even the most anxious person. ~ Brittney

trotlines, and he took us out a lot,” recalled Jeffrey. “We just never quit going.”In fact, their love of the river was so strong as children that they would sometimes go and enjoy it when they weren’t supposed to. Jeffrey did make sure to take different precautions and try to be responsible when he was getting into a little mischief.

“Steve is two years younger than me, and Bill is eight years younger than me. Bill was about four at the time, and mama and daddy were both working. There was a lady who stayed with us, and as long as we stayed out of her hair, she didn’t really care what we got in to,” remembered Jeffrey. “Bill was one who would say if we didn’t take him then he would tell mama. I got daddy’s dog lead and clipped him to my belt and took him down the river. I put a life jacket on him. The next year when we went camping, we went out to the swimming area. Bill started heading toward the water, and mama was screaming. He jumped in the water and started swimming, and mama asked me how he learned how to swim.”

Although they are no longer mischievous boys helping OLE Gappy with anything he needed at the river or using the river to get into trouble of their own, Jeffrey and Steve still enjoy fishing and even just floating on the river. This past spring, the two brothers proudly made their longest trip on the river.

“Steve and I actually went from Gappy’s Fish Camp to Ingall’s Shipyard in Pascagoula on the river this past spring. We usually camp out on sand bars, but the river was so high this spring that the sand bars were covered up. We slept in the boat,” expressed Jeffrey. “We stopped at a marina just before we got to Pascagoula and gassed up and then went on out to the shipyard. We got someone to pick us up and bring us back.”

Although they ended up sleeping in the boat, both men enjoyed the trip down the river and had everything worked out so that they could still be comfortable on their trip.

“I’d do the trip to the coast again. That was fun,” declared Steve. “We had a piece of plywood we put on the boat to extend the deck and then just put our air mattresses on that. We had the top that is put on it when we put it in the shed, and it has elastic on it. We put that cover over it, and it held everything real tight, so we didn’t have to worry about bugs or mosquitoes or anything. We slept well. It was a little warm getting to sleep, but it wasn’t that bad. I’d do it again.”

The river changes constantly, but after frequent use of it over the years, the men are familiar with the different turns and surprises the river can throw at them. They enjoy being able to drift and just watch nature do what it does.

“My nephew and I were out here fishing one evening, and I pointed out an owl to him. That owl was in that spot every time we would come,” stated Steve. “There was a fish that knocked a shad up on the bank. That owl scooped that shad up and carried it into a hollow tree across the river. I guess she was feeding some little ones. She was fishing too. I could never figure out why she was always here, but I found out that evening.”
