LOCAL MAYOR IS SHINING BOOTS AS HE GEARS UP FOR HIS PROFESSIONAL ROLE AS SANTA CLAUS

When the mayor of Cottageville is not working in the town’s municipal park or overseeing town business, he is busy working at his second job – at the North Pole.

Tim Grimsley, who is the elected leader of the Town of Cottageville, has been working as a professional Santa Claus since 1985. “It was a bigger deal back then. I had black hair and my hair was shorter,” he said, saying he used to put white shoe polish in his beard to make it white. Now, in his older, wise years, he doesn’t have to add the shoe polish. “I’m naturally looking the part now,” he said, laughing.

Grimsley began his Santa Claus career at the former Charles Towne Square Mall in Charleston. His Santa Claus work has taken him to several locations throughout the State of South Carolina. He mostly stays close to Charleston and Hilton Head. “For almost 20 years, I was one of the Santas at the James Island Festival of Lights,” he said.

“Being a Santa takes time. You can’t kick a 4-year-old

off your lap,” he said, laughing.

When asked about the most interesting wish he has ever been given, he said “cleaning supplies” tend to top the list. “Every year, I get a child who likes to clean. Last year, I had a little boy ask for a broom,” he said, with a hearty laugh. “You’d be surprised at how much these kids take to heart what their parents are going through, what they ask for to give to their parents.”

He’s also had children ask for more random gifts, like for a puppy or Lysol.

Other times, it’s a heart-breaking request for family members to get better or for dads to return home from deployment. “You can see the sincerity in their eyes, even if they are asking for something silly. You can see they really want that. It breaks your heart sometimes,” said Grimsley. “Sometimes, they ask for their puppy back, and that’s really sad, too. But I try to steer them back to the joy of Christmas, of what they have.

“I would much rather talk to these children any day.

They are so sincere and so loving and honest. Being Santa is the best job in the world because they are on their best behavior with me and I take credit for what all you parents do for Christmas!”

This year, Grimsley is the Santa Claus for the Dorchester County PAWS Animal Fundraiser. He is also the professional Santa Claus at the S.C. Aquarium in Charleston. Of course, Grimsley also participates in weekend holiday parades, held throughout the Lowcountry.

When it comes to Cottageville, though, Grimsley stays in his mayoral role even while making holiday wishes come true for local children. “I’m Santa, but I have a gavel,” he said, laughing. “I never even get to see the parade, because I’m always last in it.”

Safety tips are designed to keep your decorating, cooking and gatherings safe during the holidays.

The holidays are a time to reconnect with family and friends, but they also can present seasonal safety hazards.

Here are some tips to help you keep your home safe this holiday season.

Proven need for holiday safety ‘Tis the season to trim the tree, and watch the ladder step while you’re at it. The winter holiday season is traditionally a festive time of year filled with colorful decorations and family gatherings. But it is also too often a time of tragedy and loss.

Electrical safety Between 2011 and 2015, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) indicates an average of 200 home fires, per year, started with Christmas trees. Those fires resulted in six deaths, 16 injuries, and $14.8 million in property damage.

• Avoid electrical fires by purchasing lights from reputable retailers and only those approved by nationally recognized testing labs like US, Intertek or CSA.

• Inspect both indoor and outdoor lights for broken sockets, frayed wired and loose connections.

• Don’t overload outlets with too many electrical devices — this could cause a fire.

• Don’t use cords with exposed or frayed wires.

Holiday decorating tips People falling is a serious concern this time of year. Annually, hospital emergency rooms treat about 5,800 people who are injured from falls involving holiday decorations. And about 4,000 people are treated for injuries that are associated with extension cords. These injuries include contusions, lacerations, fractures or sprains as a result of tripping over the cords. Here are some tips to make your holiday decorating safer: • Never use furniture as a ladder.

• Follow the 1-to-4 rule for extension ladders: for every four feet the ladder rises, move the base out one foot from the structure.

• Always keep three point of contact on the ladder: two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand.

A little fire safety can go a long way Even with all those Christmas tree fires, cooking equipment is the leading cause of home fires and injuries. Most fires occur on Thanksgiving, followed by the day before Thanksgiving and then Christmas day. Here are some holiday fire safety tips: • Avoid using candles if possible. Consider using batteryoperated ones.

• Mantels are beautiful when covered with stockings and greenery. But these items are flammable. If you use your fireplace frequently, consider hanging these decorations somewhere else.

• Be sure to check the Christmas tree — make sure it’s got plenty of water and it isn’t near heat sources.

• Choose an artificial tree with a “fire resistant” label.

• When cooking, pay close attention to what you’re doing and your surroundings.

• Keep a fire extinguisher close by.

• Be sure you have smoke detectors at least 10 feet from your stove, and test them monthly.

Shopping • Park in a well-lit area.

• Don’t leave purchased gifts in plain view; lock them in your trunk.

• Avoid carrying large amounts of cash; use credit cards that have “Ask for ID” written on the back.

• Check your bank statements frequently during the season for suspicious activity.

• Avoid angry, aggressive driving.

Preventing poisoning, and a few other tips, during the holidays The risk of poisoning also increases during the holiday period, resulting not only from common household items, but also carbon monoxide (CO). The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reports that the majority of CO deaths occur in the colder months of November through February. Here are more tips: • Be sure your child doesn’t have access to dangerous plants. Mistletoe, holly berries and Jerusalem cherries can be poisonous if consumed in large amounts.

Those small button batteries found in toys, remotes and the like, are VERY dangerous so make sure children don’t swallow them.

• Tiny magnets are also dangerous if swallowed.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU RECEIVE A GIFT YOU DON’T LIKE The holiday season is usually filled with presents of all kinds. However, you may not like some of the gifts you receive. Here’s what you can do if you find yourself in this situation.

Say thank you. Presents are usually given with good intentions. Therefore, whether you like what you receive or not, it’s important to be polite and thank the person for thinking of you.

Keep it. If the person gifted you a personalized or handmade present, it’s probably best to keep it. Unless the item doesn’t fit, as may be the case with clothing, it’s hard to turn down this type of present. Instead, keep it in a safe place and bring it out on occasion.

Exchange it. If you’re given a receipt for the item, you don’t need to say anything. Simply exchange the gift for something you like. Editor’s Note: This holiday season is more important than ever. It’s a time to hold our loves ones close, and to be with friends and family. It’s also a fun time to embrace traditions, new and old. To help remind us of those fun traditions that we may have missed recently, here are a few “how to” steps on some basics. Enjoy and don’t forget to do your own favorite tradition this holiday season!

HOW TO MAKE A FRESH GARLAND WREATH (Courtesy of Delia Creates)

What you will need: Floral wire Gardening/pruning shears Wire cutter Optional: Embellishments and Battery Operated Lights Material notes: Use a wire wreath form found for about $2 at any craft store.

Smaller ones are preferred.

1. Cut 8-10 inch sprigs of evergreen needles and group them together into small bundles. The thicker your bundles, the thicker your wreath. Try to keep the sizes of the bundles consistent, so that your wreath will be even.

2. Lay your first bundle, inside the concave groove of the wire wreath form.

Wrap and twist floral wire around the base of the bundle and the wire wreath form about five times. Do not cut the wire yet.

3. Lay another bundle on top of the first bundle, staggering the spacing a couple of inches. Wrap floral wire around the base of the next bundle about 4-5 times.

4. Continue around the wreath, repeating step three.

5. When you come around to where you started, simply lift up the top of the first bundle, and keep adding more bundles underneath it, until the wreath looks full and complete. Cut the wire and secure the cut end by twisting it to the wire wreath form.

6. Optional: Add embellishments, other varieties of evergreen and/ or some twinkle lights, such as battery-operated LED lights.

HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE POPCORN GARLAND Step 1: Make or buy popcorn and discard any broken or burnt pieces.

If using microwave popcorn, just make sure it has no butter or salt! Leave the popcorn out for 1 to 2 days so it hardens and becomes strong enough to thread.

Step 2: Measure out about an arm’s length of sewing thread, fishing wire, or waxed dental floss. (You can tie multiple garlands together later).

Thread the needle with the wire, and tie a knot at the end of the thread. A plastic needle is a good idea if you’re doing this project with kids!

Step 3: Push the needle through the center of a popcorn kernel, and pull it through to the end of the thread. Alternate popcorn with fresh cranberries and whatever else you please—some fun ideas include cinnamon sticks and dried orange slices! Repeat with more garlands and tie them together to make a big one. Note: The fresh cranberries won’t last longer than a day or two, but you can spray the garland with shellac to preserve it.

Step 4: When decorating your tree, string any lights first. Then, starting from the top, drape your popcorn garland loosely around the tree. Add

SMART TIPS FOR WELL-WRITTEN HOLIDAY CARDS The time has come once again to send out holiday cards. If you’re not sure what to write to your friends and relatives, here’s some advice.

Give yourself plenty of time Whether you want to send your cards by mail or electronically, avoid waiting till the last minute to get started. Not only do you risk forgetting someone, but a rushed card won’t have the same sentiment as a message you took the time to reflect on.

Craft a personalized message The standard greetings that appear in most store-bought cards or online templates can be a good starting point. However, regardless of whether the cards you choose include text, be sure to add a personal touch so the message reflects your relationship with the recipient.

If you’re very close with the person, don’t hesitate to mention recent or upcoming events such as their plans to buy a house or a trip they just took.

Has it been a while since you caught up? Consider extending an invitation for a phone call or coffee date after the holidays. The most important thing is to be sincere.

Be optimistic about the future In addition to wishing the person a happy holiday, include a positive message about the new year. While you shouldn’t disregard any recent hardship the person may have experienced, the idea is to share some hope for the future.

Remember, you can be as creative as you want with your holiday cards. Just be sure to write from the heart.

THIS HOLIDAY SEASON BRINGS LOTS OF LIGHT TO DAZZLE SILVER AND WHITE

This holiday season, traditions are back as some of the top decorating trends of 2021 include classics, such as linen napkins, natural pine needles and, you guessed it, candlelight.

“Here’s the nice thing – cloth napkins and tablecloths are back in a big way,” said Rocki Hovenga, owner of Simply Yours Interior in Walterboro. “We are going back to the basics with our family, and adding some more formal flare and more formal décor this year.”

As for those centerpieces, you can fold the napkins or use interesting napkin rings, such as beaded rings spray-painted in white or silver. You can also use faux garland for smaller napkin rings.

“People need to think about what they already have and what they can build on,” she said. “This year, the most important thing to remember is a woodlands-theme and keeping it simple.”

Some of the classics, however, are getting more of a modern twist. “There is a definite facelift happening with a bold black and red checkered pattern or the buffalo check pattern in white and black,” said Hovenga. “You can incorporate it into anything.”

Of course, there is always something new. This year, one of the top decorating trends is to have everything in silver and white.

“Whites and silvers are a big rage,” she said. “Trees, mantle décor, centerpieces … silver and white.”

No matter what you choose to decorate with, remember to keep centerpieces low so that everyone’s eyes can still meet. Also be sure to use a long, linear centerpiece that attracts attention from all sides of the table.

Lastly, consider using LED candles with timers. They are safer, especially for a hostess with a lot to do. “Candles are huge this year. It’s adding a formal, traditional touch. But the LED candles are safer with children and seniors, and the timer just makes it easier for the hostess,” said Hovenga.

And, what’s the biggest accessory this holiday season? Gnomes!

“They are fun and they are everywhere,” she said. “Pillows, standing gnomes, guest place cards…they are certainly a hot trend.”

Top Trends • Use natural pine branches to create centerpieces and drapery for your mantle.

• Woodlawn Themes are all the rage. Use pine needles, pine combs, evergreens, holly berries and accent with fluffy woodsy creatures. “Stuffed white bunnies, foxes … woodland theme and woodland creatures as accessories are big this year,” said Hovenga.

• Gnomes are the fun holiday decorating trick this year.

• Candlelight is a must. Consider using LED candles to be safer around larger crowds.

• Silver and White are the top colors for trees and accessories.

HOLIDAY DRINKS

HOMEMADE EGGNOG Ingredients 2 c. milk 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon, plus more for garnish 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg 1/2 tsp. pure vanilla extract 6 large egg yolks 1/2 c. granulated sugar 1 c. heavy cream 1 c. bourbon or rum (optional) Whipped cream, for serving

GRINCH PUNCH

Ingredients 1 (0.13-oz.) packet Kool-Aid Lemon Lime mix 4 c. water 4 c. ice 3 c. lemon-lime soda 2 c. pineapple juice 2 c. vodka 1 c. ginger ale Lime wedges, for rimming Red sanding sugar, for rimming Return mixture to saucepan and cook over medium heat until slightly thick (and coats the back of a spoon) but does not boil. (If using a candy thermometer, mixture should reach 160º.)

Remove from heat and stir in heavy cream and, if using, bourbon.

Refrigerate until chilled.

When ready to serve, garnish with whipped cream and cinnamon.

Directions In a small saucepan over low heat, combine milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla and slowly bring mixture to a low boil.

Meanwhile, in a large bowl, whisk egg yolks with sugar until yolks are pale in color. Slowly add hot milk mixture to egg yolks in batches to temper the eggs and whisk until combined.

Directions In a large pitcher combine Kool-Aid and water.

In a large punch bowl, combine ice, kool-aid, soda, pineapple juice, vodka, and ginger ale.

Use a lime wedge to rim glasses and dip in sanding sugar to coat. Pour punch into glasses to serve.

HOMEMADE APPLE CIDER

HOW TO:

Ingredients 10 apples, quartered ¾ c. white sugar 1 tbs. ground cinnamon 1 tbs. ground Allspice

Ingredients (Makes One Drink) 5 oz hot brewed coffee 1 tbsp whiskey 1 and ½ tbsp Irish Cream Liqueur (like Baileys) Whipped Cream

Directions Place apples in a large stockpot and add enough water cover by at least 2 inches. Stir in sugar, cinnamon, and allspice. Bring to a boil. Boil, uncovered, for 1 hour. Cover pot, reduce heat, and simmer for 2 hours.

Strain apple mixture though a fine mesh sieve. Discard solids. Drain cider again though a cheesecloth lined sieve. Refrigerate until cold.

Directions Stir hot coffee, whiskey and Irish Cream to combine.
