e want to first start this month out by saying we are terribly sorry for the delay in our September issue. Our printers were affected by Hurricane Ida, delaying the printing and delivery of Avenues. Our October issue was another fun one to put together for our readers. The home tour this month is technically a “condo” tour in Cherokee Village. The vacation home belongs to Memphis, Tenn. couple Michael and Tammy Dumas. When they are not enjoying the beautiful Ozarks scenery from their South Fork River condo, they rent out the property, allowing others to enjoy their tranquil oasis. Tammy was introduced to the area 30 years ago and fell in love. Plus the Cherokee Village Townhome Association’s heated indoor pool was a deciding factor for the second property they’ve owned in Cherokee Village. I always love hearing why individuals not from here love visiting the place I call home. Renee dove into the history of car shows. It is a popular event all across the country and locally, we have quite a few car clubs or organizations. She most recently attended the record breaking event held by the Mammoth Spring Chamber of Commerce, where she was able to meet some members of those groups and learn more about their interest in cars. I got the privilege of visiting with Joe and Monica Summers and Mike Frieman. The Summers own Summers Taxidermy & Wildlife Studio in Bakersfield, Mo. If you’ve ever wondered how one gets into the trade of taxidermy, it takes a special set of skills and an amazing teacher, which Joe had in Mike. Be sure to check out the Halloween safety tips and stay tuned to Areawide Media products for events happening at the end of the month. We’ve also included photos of the Labor Day rodeo held by J & H Rodeo Co. in Caulfield, Mo. We hope you enjoy this October issue!

Gardening in the Ozarks Doctor Thompson Park…the heart of the Quad Cities…

verything in gardening is a learning and growing experience. Doctor Thompson Park in Hardy is just such an experience. For a little over three years, Rob Smith and I have had the pleasure of helping to make this “hidden gem” shiny, showy and inviting. Doctor Thompson Park is right on Main Street. It used to be the Dulcimer Shop that sadly burned down. Later that lot was donated to Hardy by Jeff Kamps and has evolved into the park it is today. You can still see the remaining wall from the old shop next to the building on the right. If you notice, the flower beds at the park change out twice a year. This strategy is good for the park (or your own garden) so that there is year round interest in the garden. Over the years we have trimmed back some of the larger shrubs to make them more manageable. The “bones” of this garden are strong and they were well thought out by Betty and Bud Holm as they lovingly took care of the garden for so many years. As I said, the garden changes twice a year. This time of year, all

the summer annuals are full of blooms and absolutely beautiful. But with the first frost, they will die back. So now is when we will be pulling up those plants and replacing them with winter hardy annuals like pansies to give color during the winter. We are also planning on adding some spring blooming bulbs here and there to add little surprises when they pop up. As soon as you see pansies show up at the store is when you should plant them. This gives them time to develop roots and start to grow before winter hits. These flowers will be blooming when you are sitting on Santa’s lap in the gazebo telling him what you want for Christmas. They will bloom all winter, even with snow on them. Come spring, the bulbs will give such amazing display and the pansies will be magnificent, but sadly when it gets hot, they will die out. So, around April, we will remove the pansies and replant with the summer annuals and start all over. Over the years I have noticed so many people using the park. There was a wedding in the gazebo. Several senior class pictures were taken there and shared on Facebook. Not to mention the tons of prom pictures taken there. All summer long there is music playing on Saturdays in the gazebo and it has become a meeting place for those visiting Hardy.
Rob and I have some amazing plans for Doctor Thompson Park in the future. Some of them involve painting and building up the soil so we can add more interesting plants. The best thing about Doctor Thompson Park is, because of everyone who over the
years has helped to take care of it, no matter when you go there, there is always something interesting blooming. The one thing we can all say, “Doctor Thompson Park IS the heart of the Quad Cities.”

The Dumas’ bought their first property in Sharp County in 2008, which was a cabin, “Grizzly Hill” is its official Air BnB listing, in Cherokee Village with views of Lake Sequoyah. The couple is a blended family with four children between them and enjoy hosting their friends and family, so a larger property became a must-have. Tammy loved her neighbors and the area so much,

Though rented out for others to enjoy, the Dumas’ are certain to block out special times throughout the year, such as during the 4th of July. “I love Thunder on Thunderbird. This story is the perfect example of why Tammy fell in love with the area 30 years ago. She had friends who brought her to visit the Ozarks and she has been visiting ever since from Memphis. “I fell in love with it. It is only three hours from Memphis, which is perfect if you don’t have time to go to Gatlinburg, Tenn. or the Great Smoky Mountains. The Spring River area has moun-
tains, rivers, lakes, wildlife, nature .. you can’t beat it,” said Tammy. The tranquility of the Ozarks leaves Tammy with a rejuvenated feeling. “I’ve always lived in the city and work full time, it is just a place to go to re-charge your batteries and I always felt really renewed … I like to leave my troubles behind at the bridge,” she said about crossing the Mississippi River into Arkansas. She originally hadn’t planned to list the property on Air BnB, but once she did, “it has been going gangbuster ever since”, which also means the property has been rented nearly

ACNA October Artist of the Month: Kay Vanderputten By Cheri Lynn Quattrochi
T
he Arts Center of North Arkansas’s October Artist of the Month is Kay Vanderputten, who creates unique jewelry, using Swarovski crystals, wire-wrapping, and polymer clay. Hailing from Seoul, Korea, Kay’s creative journey started one day while she was making rosaries. Since that time, she has constantly experimented with various media, learning which ones can be incorporated into her jewelry and which ones work best in other artistic endeavors such as sculpting and décor. Kay’s venture into polymer clay began in June 2020 when her son, Pius, wanted to learn about making a polymer clay model. They gathered all the materials. After their first attempt, he lost interest, but Kay was hooked. This media can be very challenging at times, but the creative aspects are never-ending, at least for someone with Kay’s creative instincts. When she realized that the newer keyboards, those used by gamers and keyboard enthusiasts, have removable keycaps that can be customized, an idea formed. Hoping to tap into her son’s creativity, Kay and he will be creating a custom line of keycaps with polymer clay and resin—something especially for the people who are serious about their keyboard caps! While making jewelry is still just a hobby, Kay would like to go into it fulltime. Painting and other media are also of interest to her, and someday, when time “stands still,” she would like to resume that as well as guide her son in his drawing and painting skills. These activities will be a far cry from the days when Kay did research in the U. S. Army laboratory at Walter Reed. Another hobby of Kay’s is baking. She had a booth, Mt. Carmel Bakery, for three seasons at the Farmer’s Market in Cherokee Village. She continues to bake for special occasions or just for fun. Kay has already conducted several classes at ACNA. Watching her students work and witnessing the “light bulb” going off in their heads is very rewarding. Her next classes involve learning first about the texture and dimension of polymer clay, then experimenting with various media in conjunction with polymer clay in the advanced classes. L
ocated in Bakersfield, Mo. is a pair of gifted taxidermists at Summers Taxidermy & Wildlife Studio, owned by Joe and Monica Summers. The studio opened in 2018, hit the ground running and though the COVID pandemic has provided some challenges, the business hasn’t looked back. What was supposed to be a much shorter “school” turned into a year long course, followed by a lifelong friendship and mentorship. Joe Summers worked approximately 15 years as a union boilermaker before he decided to chase his lifelong dream of doing taxidermy full time. He started learning the trade from Mike Freiman, who has 52 years experience of doing taxidermy for the public, but even with the occasional disagreement, the pair of men work so well together, Freiman has joined Summers at his studio once he retired from his own near Pomona, Mo. Frieman’s son was still alive

when Summers built his own studio and Mike’s was still open. Three months after the studio was built, their son and friend passed away. Little did Summers know, but his connection to Frieman started when he was 14-years-old. “I didn’t know it, but [Mike] mounted my first deer,” said Summers. When it comes to Summers’ education, he feels he has learned from the best. “He has a method to fix everything. He has taught me so much. I learn something almost every day. It has been blessing to have him,” said Summers. The two even have a tradition of shaking hands before one leaves for the day. “As far as our business, we do everything in taxidermy. We do hides, birds, fish, snakes, replicas, artificial horns, exotic animals, life size stuff; I’ve got some deer in the back we have been working on together,” said Summers. Summers and Frieman each have their own set of skills and things they are better at, but don’t let that fool you, each individually has the skill set to do an amazing job from start to finish on a project. The end results are immaculate and that is easy to see by the animals on display at the Bakersfield studio. When it comes to accepting an animal for taxidermy, the first step is making sure it is a legal animal and all proper paperwork is provided. “We work with the game and fish, we keep them on our side. me that too, he said to always do what is right,” explained Summers. From there, the individual bringing in the animal decides what kind of mount they want. “We offer three different types of mounts, but you can get any kind of form. We have a regular commercial mount, signature series deer and we offer 40 hours on one deer,” said Summers. They also make artificial rock, the stands and habitats for their mounts. The detail and true artwork that goes into a mount isn’t something hunters always think about or appreciate, but any project Summers or Frieman touch is going to to be a piece of wildlife art. Each of the taxidermists have their own mounts on display in the studio showcasing some of their most favorite pieces. “Anything in here you see, we mounted. It is not bought,” said Summers as he talked about the studio’s showroom, which is a beautiful sight as well. Artificial horns, eyes, etc. will sometimes be used, but Summers said they are always responsible for the mount. “It’s not a bought in brought in type of deal,” he added. Frieman mounts all of the fish that come in. When asked if any of the mounts on display

in the studio were for sale, Summers said the studio will sell anything that isn’t federal, such as ducks. “We will stuff that is ours, or stuff that people won’t come pick up,” which is something they’ve had happen during the pandemic. Frieman enjoys seeing what mounts people can dream up. After 52 years in the industry, there isn’t much he hasn’t seen. Driftwood was brought in by a customer and Frieman said he told Summers, “This is going to make the neatest fish scene you have ever seen.” He has even mounted animals for celebrities such as country star Mel Tillis and NFL Quarterback Mark Rypien. He is very humble when it comes to his work, but Summers didn’t mind bragging

on his mentor. “It is an honor,” said Frieman of his recognition over the years. “A little kid came in today and got his fish. That little boy came back to Mike and thanked him,” said Summers. It is having clients like that come in that makes them love what they do. Yes they do it for a living, and even though the pandemic has made things difficult, Summers is proud to be doing what he loves and faces the challenge with optimism. “We will get through it.” The metal building has a welcoming custom front porch and more custom work on the inside. Monica and Farrah (one of their children) spent a lot of time customizing the wood which lines the walls of the studio. The decorative tin use came from Summers’ family farm. Her husband also credits her for the overall plan of the studio. Monica is also a big part of the day to day operations. She is also their professional photographer when it comes to showcasing their mounts, she has an eye for great photos, as you can see by the photos in-

Grandma Bell’s Famous Candied Yams Submitted by Erica Frazier Ingredients 6 medium sized yams peeled and sliced 1 stick (8 tbsp.) butter 3/4 cup dark brown sugar 3/4 cup granulated sugar 1 tbsp. cinnamon 1/2 tsp. ground ginger 1 tsp. ground nutmeg 1 tbsp. pure vanilla extract 1-1/2 cups mini marshmallows Instructions Place the peeled and cut yams into a large pot, and cover the yams with water. Place the pot on the stove top, turn the heat to high, and let the yams boil for about 5 minutes. Then drain the yams, and set the to the side. In a separate pot, add in 1 stick of butter, and begin to melt it over medium high heat. Once the butter is melted, reduce the heat to low, and add in the granulated sugar, and the brown sugar. Stir, and cook for 1 minute, then turn the heat off. Sprinkle in the ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and ground ginger. Stir, and add in the vanilla extract. Place the yams into a buttered baking dish, and pour the candied mixture all over the yams. Fold in the ingredients. Make sure the yams are well coated with the candied mixture! Place the yams in the oven, Uncovered, on 375 F for 20 minutes. Remove the yams from the oven, and add the marshmallows on top. Place the yams back into the oven for 5-7 minutes.

A love of cars, driving force of events and clubs

A
ttracting visitors from near and far, a love for vehicles drives interested individuals to car shows every year throughout the region and
country. Held by Mammoth Spring Chamber of Commerce, this year’s show, the 37th annual, surpassed its previous record-breaking year with 167 vehicles. In 2019, the event featured approximately 130 vehicles, which set

its previous record. The trend of holding car shows began in the early 1900s and quickly gained popularity. Members of car clubs often participate and attend these popular events. When visiting the annual Antique & Classic Car Show in Mammoth Spring it is hard to miss the collection of Corvettes that are usually displayed along
the fence line including ones from Jonesboro club, Fast Glass Corvettes. A love of cars, particularly the Corvette, inspires this club. Now in his 70s, club member Dave Beustring owned his first Corvette when he was in his 20s. “I had a 1964 Stingray Convertible,” said Beustring, stating he wished he had it back. He also has owned a C4 and two C5s. “I have enjoyed my Corvettes,” said Beustring. A love for their Corvettes may bring members of the club together but fellowship helps the club to thrive. With approximately 75 to 80 members, the club holds meetings once a month at a restaurant in Jonesboro. Some of the members own one Corvette and others own multiple of the sports car. Beustring stated there is a lot of fellowship, a lot
of getting together and everybody there has the same thing in common, cars. Once a month, the club holds a dinner cruise during which they will pick a location to drive to for dinner. The last dinner cruise the club participated in was to Bigger’s Bluff in Hardy, Ark. The club also holds special events such as Christmas dinner and a club picnic at the

president’s home every year. At every meeting the members donate money to give to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Members also collect new toys and donate them to different places at Christmas time. Fast Glass Corvettes does not host any shows, but members attend car show events throughout the year including in Mammoth Spring, Ark., Dexter, Mo., Kennett, Mo., Eureka Springs, Ark., and a large weekend event some members attend in Effingham, Ill. to name a few. Beustring stated people are welcome to come to the meetings, join the club and join in with all they do. Many of the members are also members of other car clubs.
Another local car club, located in Mountain Home, Ark., is Cruisers of Mountain Home. “We don’t really have members…because we kind of just hang out and we invite everybody. If you like cars, you can come hang out. If you drive a Chevy Cavalier, it doesn’t matter. If you like cars, come hang out with us,” said Bobby Pavey. They gather usually on Saturday, with the time varying on what time of the year it is. For instance, in summer they meet around 6:30 p.m. and in the fall will be around 4 p.m. They will meet in a parking lot like at Hobby Lobby, then cruise for about an hour, go back to the parking lot and hang out. “The first meet we ever had that I advertised,

we had 155 cars show up,” said Pavey, stating it was held in a small parking lot and filled up in seven minutes. Pavey stated they have close to 1,600 people who have joined their Facebook page. Cruisers of Mountain Home enjoys being involved in the community. Recently, they attended a car show so people in assisted living could check out their cars. Pavey stated it is something to do with all the craziness taking place in the world. “It kind of adds some peace to everybody’s mind to go hangout and talk about cars and look at them. It is a break away from the craziness of life,” said Pavey. Cruisers of Mountain Home has held their own car show which was held in June. They partnered with a local Ford dealership that helped sponsor and provide trophies. Pavey stated there is a mixture of vehicles owned by those that join the gatherings including cars, trucks, motorcycles, side-by-sides, etc. as well as a common interest of vehicles for those who gather no matter the age group. “You should be able to love anybody’s passion just
the same no matter if they like the classics or like the new stuff,” said Pavey. The next car show to be held locally, will be Saturday, Oct. 9 during the Salem VFW Post 9777 and Auxiliary’s Community Fun Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The facility is located on Hwy. 395 at 105 Veterans Way in Salem, Ark.

Time and Nature By Dewayne French Do you have time for the outdoors? Our time is often based on hours in a day and is vastly different than that of nature. The “outdoors time-line” is based on the prevailing seasons and the ebb and flow of the natural surroundings. While we are hustling around trying to make a football game for our kids or hurry to get to the mid-week bible study at church after a long day of work, time is hurriedly flying by. Just so we can do it all over tomorrow after we get a few hours of sleep. Time in nature is so totally different and not based on life’s timeline of 24/7/365. Take a short walk around your farm or local state park. Maybe go sit by a slow moving stream and just take it all in.
Time is different when we are not pushing life along everyday just trying to making a living. Fish in a stream just chill behind a current break until food drifts by, then they eat. A buck deer on a crisp, cool, fall morning is looking for some acorns to eat. The birds and squirrels we see in the leaves are getting nests ready for their “little ones”. Life in nature is not led by the all mighty dollar, far from that. Instinct is the name of the game in the outdoor world, not hours in the day. We, as humans, live by reason and that controls our daily activities. Everything from our jobs, family time, and even when we get to fish and go hunting. We are so caught up in making a living that we often times forget to have our outside recharge time. Fish, birds, and animals live by instinct, no reasoning involved there. They eat, sleep, defend, and reproduce for just one thing, life. They have
no mortgage to pay, no monthly bills, they simply live life. I don’t get to be in the outdoors as much as I would like to be. As we mentioned earlier, we have bills to pay and we must work a job to pay our bills. Nature’s time has been going on since the earth was set in motion and will continue until it, well just don’t anymore. Our life starts out and is over in a relatively short span. What we make of it and who we interact with along the way is our life story. If we go fishing, go hunting, go shoot some targets, or just sit and enjoy nature we will be better off for it. So as you’re planning your days, weeks, and months out, remember, you’re only allotted so much time. So try living your days not just plodding along the same path. We all have to live and survive, but actually try to live them. Follow Abe’s famous line at the end of this

Hometown Strong is a way for GTS as therapists and member of community to give back to the communities that we love and live in. Each month employees of GTS donates a portion of their paycheck and GTS rounds that amount up to make a donation to a local charity. Each staff member that donates to this fund is entered into a drawing and once per month we draw a staff member name. Angie Cadenbach chose the Viola Backpack Program to receive $1,000.

The Viola School Backpack Program started in 2016, when two students were looking to address a community/school need for a FCCLA competition. Since then the program has tripled in size. The program has solely been funded by community donations, both food and monetary. High school students in Mrs. Walker’s Leadership class are in charge of packing backpacks, shopping and organizing the food room. Backpacks are sent home with students in need each Friday.
