SHADOW CREEK SHARKS Sharks enter reinvention territory after bit with biggest graduation losses

W

hile Shadow Creek experienced its share of ups and downs during a 6-4 campaign in 2020, Brad Butler’s squad still managed to gain a trip to the Division 2 regional semifinals to complete their first year in the Class 6A gridiron ranks.

Combined with last year’s playoff journey, Butler’s Sharks have delivered a much impressive 37-5 start during their first three years of varsity existence, which also include a 5A D-1 championship in 2019 and a

runner-up state finalist finish in 2018.

“We’ve just been blessed with an incredible group of talented athletes and gotten off to fast starts, which has built the kids’ confidence of expecting to win,” Butler said.

The above swagger may be put to a stern test this upcoming fall, though, with the Sharks facing their biggest turnover rate ever with 32 lettermen lost to graduation.

We are kind of trying to reinvent ourselves right now,” Butler said. “Unfortunately graduation comes along once in a while. This is the biggest turnover we have ever had in our program. We’re going to have a bunch of new faces.

“The key for us is staying together as adversity strikes. If these guys can stay together through some difficult times, then I think we have a chance to mature into a really good football team. As long as everybody in the locker room believes in each other, we got a chance.”

Shadow Creek scrimmaged CE King on Aug. 19 at Freedom Field, while also hosting No. 4 state ranked North Shore in a highly anticipated Aug. 27 season opener.

The Sharks then played at Bridgeland on Sept. 4 and also play Cypress Woods the following week on Sept. 10 on the road.

SHADOW CREEK SHARKS edged sword with North Shore, Bridgeland and Cy Woods,” Butler said. “But with this schedule, we will also find out the areas we need to improve on once district play rolls around.

“We will be young and inexperienced. But I’m confident once district play rolls around, we will have our feet on the ground and will have matured as a football team. We just need some guys who haven’t played a whole lot of snaps to step up and be leaders for us.”

Once 23-6A play rolls around, Shadow Creek will be contending with the likes of Pearland, Dawson and Strake Jesuit for playoff spots according to DCTFM. Pearland coach Ricky Tullos likened the field in 23-6A to a smaller version of the SEC.” “It’s definitely a difficult stretch,” Butler said. “If you come out of our district as a playoff team, I think you’re going to be pretty seasoned and ready for it. If we can keep from beating each other up, then we all have a pretty good shot once the playoffs roll around.”

Butler said the Sharks’ offense starts up front in the line with the senior duo of guard Dillon Hughes and center Meyson Colbert, who will be joined by Stewart Harris, Marcus Kemp, tackle Zach Rymer (6-3, 300) and Marquise Yancy.

After seeing limited action under center when Kyron Drones (now at Baylor) got hurt early last season, Dave Campbell Texas Football Magazine’s 23-6A preseason offensive MVP Duke Butler (6-1, 170, 4.6) takes over the signal calling duties for Butler and company, while running backs Felix Buchanan and Jacob Washington will also be newcomers in the backfield.

Duke Butler’s outside receivers include Lawrence Armstrong (61, 175, 4.5) and Jo`qwan West on the outside with Josh Best (5-10, 175, 4.6) and Caleb Washington taking up the slot stations. Armstrong hauled in six TD receptions last season.

“Duke has some big shoes to fill. We have had some great quarterbacks,” Butler said. “He’s going to be under the gun a bit, but we’re excited. He’s an extremely hard worker and we’re excited about what he can develop into.

“Between Buchanan and Washington, I think we have a chance to be real solid at running back. Jacob is more of a pounder, while Felix is a shifty guy that can be hard to handle.”

Place kicker Matt Allison also returns for the Sharks with Butler expecting the senior to have a major impact on his special teams unit. Allison converted 34 of his 36 PAT attempts last season and added five field goals.

The Sharks’s defensive line consists of ends Josh Diaz (6-2, 250, 4.9) and Theo Randle (6-2, 240, 4.9) and nose guard Jayden Madkins, while the linebackers corps includes Robert Luddington, Robert Edmonson on the inside and outside backers Scott Koumado and Sean Gilbert.

DeJuan Lewis (5-11, 180, 4.5) returns at safety after a 66 tackle season in 2020 and will be joined in the secondary by corners Nick Hudson, Brian Nelson and Jaden Beck.

“We still have a few questions on both sides of the ball,” Butler said. “Our guys aren’t young grade wise, but just as far as field experience. The biggest thing that stood out for us last year in making the jump to 6A was depth, because we’re on the smaller side of 6A and there are schools with much bigger enrollments.”

ALVIN YELLOWJACKETS 2020 finale victory carried stinging momentum for Yellowjackets into offseason

By Stephen Collins Sports Editor Beating Dulles 21-10 to close the 2020 football season accomplished a lot more than breaking a 30-game skid for the Alvin Yellowjacket football program.

It gave new head coach James Gage and company a positive note to build on towards this upcoming campaign. The Yellowjackets promptly seized upon the opportunity and delivered a solid offseason workout program both during spring training and the summer, Gage said.

“Winning the last game of the year was real big for us and it carried a lot of momentum from the time I was named head coach (last spring), to now” Gage added. “The kids bought in and had a great summer.

“With the UIL changing the rule that you can do football specific stuff in the summer, we felt like we were much further along from where we were at any point last year. It will be brand new to some people and it will be a different atmosphere. But when you start talking X’s and O’s, the kids should know what we’re doing based off spring ball and everything we did during

the summer.”

Having seven starters back on offense certainly helps the cause for Alvin, who will continue to run from the flexbone formation. Sebastian Cisneros (6-3, 260) returns at center, while Trevor Bockel (5-11, 175, 4.8) takes over as the starting quarterback after splitting time with Cody Smith last season.

“Cisneros is a three-year starter, who’s a bigger kid, but a real athletic one for his size,” Gage said. “Trevor has got some good varsity experience by rotating in with Cody. We’re excited that he’s going to be

Joining Bockel in the backfield will be running backs Daniel Blume and Jordan Torres (6-0, 190, 4.6) and fullbacks Cole Erndt and Dayshawn Peterson. John Hoffman also saw action in 10 games at receiver last season.

Blume and Torres have both seen action in several games over the last two years, as did Erndt in ‘20.

“We feel good from an experience stand point at running back,” Gage said. “Overall offensively, it should be an exciting year for us, I hope. We have seven starters back technically, but also several other kids who played a whole bunch of games last year and got a lot of snaps.

“We will see what that experience does with year three in the system.”

With a lot of Alvin juniors also seeing several minutes of playing time on the other side of the ball, it ultimately led to the Jackets returning nine defensive starters.

Cade Bingham (5-11, 170, 4.7) and Gage Johnson are both back at the safety spots and join Matthew Chavira, Maison Garcia and Carson Robl in the secondary. At the linebacker spots, Braedon Sobeck started eight games last year from the inside and Wyatt Stinson is coming back after missing action in ‘20 from an ankle injury.

“Darius Wilson also had an unbelievable offseason and will rotate in with the other guys on the inside,” Gage said. “The outside linebackers are probably going to be the strong point of our defense. We feel good with Gavin Guthrie (6-2, 205, 4.7) on one side and Easton Winfield (6-0, 205, 4.7) on the other side as anchors.

“Easton started eight games for us last season at inside linebacker, so we bumped him up and will have him play on the outside this season.”

On the defensive line, Jimmy Beasley and Larry Vojacek are each back for their third seasons. Charlie Fox also saw action early last season before being sidelined by injury. Marshall Garcia was moved from linebacker to the DL and will continue to see time on the line this time around, as well. Christian Montalvo, who played on the junior varsity squad, also has a shot at a starting spot after turning in a solid offseason.

Caleb Reed’s progression at place kicker has also made a huge impression on Gage.

“I tell other people that you always hear that thump of the ball with the good kickers and that’s exactly what you hear with Caleb and he’s got a strong leg to go along with that,” Gage said. “We feel like when he’s on the field, he’s a weapon for us whether it’s for kickoffs, punts, field goals or PAT’s.”

Alvin will be competing in 23-6A once again with Shadow Creek, Pearland, Dawson, Strake Jesuit and the Alief schools (Elsik, Hastings, Taylor). Gage agreed with Pearland’s Ricky Tullos assessment (during July’s Alvin Lions Club’s Pigskin Preview Luncheon) that the district resembles a smaller version of the SEC. “If you can survive this district, you have a chance to make a deep run in the playoffs,” he said. “The tough part about our district is that it’s a physical district, so being healthy and injury free will be a key for us.

“We don’t have the big kids they have at Pearland, Dawson and Shadow Creek, so we’re going to have to do things differently. It gives us a chance to close the gap on those guys.

We know we have our work cut out for us. My goal as a head coach from the first day of practice to the last game is (for the team) to get better each day. If we do that, then we feel we have a chance to compete with those district teams later in the year.”

MANVEL MAVERICKS Mavericks seek healthy path towards another deep playoff run

By Stephen Collins Sports Editor Kevin Hall has plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the Manvel Mavericks’ upcoming 2021 football campaign.

For the first time since he took over the sideline reins in 2018, Hall will field a squad which won’t be going through a huge turnover rate.

“During the previous three years, we had to replace 19 or 20 kids,” said Hall, who’s entering his fourth year as the Mavs’ head coach. “The good thing this year, though, is we have 12 or 13 guys coming back. They don’t have a ton of field experience, but have maturity, which comes with being a year older.”

Hall cited the “injury bug” as the number

one culprit keeping his players from receiving that much needed field experience in 2020. A total of eight Mavs were forced to have surgery, which cut their seasons short.

“I think Houston Methodist probably had to add a new wing to their hospital, because of all our kids they had to fix,” Hall said.

The Mavs managed to fend off the above obstacle for the most part and delivered a solid 9-2 mark, featuring a 10-5A championship and a trip to the 5A Division I State Quarterfinals. Manvel also enters 2021 as the No. 2 ranked Division I squad in the state by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine.

That being said, Hall doesn’t want to press his luck on the injury front a second time with the brutal lineups both 10-5A and Region III have to offer.

“The injuries absolutely decimated us last year, so hopefully we got that out of our system,” he said. “We have some real quality people back, but we have no depth, so we got to stay healthy.

“Out district is murder with the teams we have to play and the region is the same. If you don’t play every week, you are going to go home sooner than you want.”

The Mavs return five players on offense, which include running backs Ty Harris and De’Monte Seymour (5-9, 195, 4.5), linemen Tevin Shaw (6-5, 310) and Jaden Edmonson (6-1, 285) and place kicker Antonio Rodriguez.

Harris rambled for 1,175 yards on the ground and 13 touchdowns last year, while Seymour added 1,004 rushing yards and 14 TD’s. Rodriguez coverted 61 of 63 extra

Despite losing the likes of Jalen Walthall and Dayvon Henderson to graduation, Manvel brings back another strong receiving corps, which include Kelby Williams, Isaiah King, Andre Thompson and Trey Weary.

Hall tabbed Harris and Seymour as selfless players, who both don’t care who’s carrying the ball or who receives the credit and also called Shaw and Edmonson “leaders on and off the field.”

Juniors Byron George (6-2, 180) and Kaiden Smith (6-1, 175) will be vying for the signal calling duties, as well.

On defense, the Mavs return linebacker and University of Miami commit Justin Medlock (6-1, 220, 4.6), along with linemen J.P. Deeter (6-3, 265, 4.9), Xavier Potts and Kivon Wright, linebacker Tyree Scranton and safeties Collin Wright (6-0, 190, 4.6) and Jaqai Neal.

Scranton delivered a team-leading 101 tackles in 2020.

After missing most of last season with an injury, Medlock enters the 2021 campaign making both DCTFM’s preseason Super Team and their Class 5A All-State Second team on defense. Medlock compiled a team-leading 117 tackles as a sophomore in 2019.

Wright, a Stanford commit, earned second team all-state honors after compiling 59 tackles and intercepting four passes. Deeter was also a second team all-state pick for the Texas Sportswriters Association.

The fourth-year head coach also sees junior punter Brook Honore once again as a potential weapon on the Mavs’ special teams’ unit.

Honore is also slated to see time at receiver. Honore averaged 33.5 a kick in 2020 with a long boot of 55 yards and five kicks inside the 20-yard line.

“We’re fortunate to have a great punter and a really good kicker (Rodriguez),” Hall said. “I think people sometimes forget the importance of that (special teams). Brooke is one of the hardest working athletes you will ever see. He spends hours and hours (practicing) punting.”

Manvel scrimmaged Clear Creek Aug. 19 in League City, before opening its season Aug. 27 at Dickinson. The Mavs’ home opener came a week later on Sept. 3 with Crosby at AISD Freedom Field.

Manvel starts their league slate with Houston Wisdom, Sept. 10 at Freedom Field.

“Between the Creek scrimmage and the final non-district game with Crosby, we are going to find out where we are and what we need to correct heading into district,” Hall said. “Dickinson is a real good powerhouse 6A team and Crosby went to the state championship game last year.”

Manvel advanced to the state quarterfinals for the second straight season and the 10-5A D-1 Champions posted playoff victories over Beaumont United (63-0), Dripping Springs (38-21) and Hightower (31-7).

The Mavs also led Cedar Park late in the second half of the team’s state quarterfinals contest, before the Timberwolves pulled away for a 52-42 triumph.

Seven area players earned TSWA all-state gridiron honors in 2020

By Stephen Collins Sports Editor A total of seven players from AISD playoff teams Manvel and Shadow Creek were named to the Texas Sportswriters Association’s All-State Football Teams.

Sharks’ linebacker Terrence Cooks made the second team cut on the Class 6A list, while honorable mention teammate nods went to quarterback Kyron Drones, kick returner C.J. Guidry, defensive back Jaylen Lane and linebacker Byron Robertson.

Both kick returner Davyon Henderson and defensive back Collin Wright received honorable mention recognition on the Class 5A for the state quarterfinalist Mavericks.

Also an All-Greater Houston first team selection and University of Texas signee, Cooks (72 tackles, five sacks, seven hurries) helped the Sharks advance to the 6A

regional semifinals.

Austin Westlake quarterback Cade Klubnik was named the TSWA’s 6A offensive player of the year Denton Guyer lineman Cooper Lanz collected the defensive award hardware. The 5A awards went to Aledo running back DeMarco Roberts (offense) and Aledo cornerback Bryan Allen (defense).

Westlake’s Todd Dodge was named the TSWA coach of the year in 6A, while Denton Ryan’s Dave Henigan and Liberty Hill’s Kent Walker shared the 5A COY accolade.
