W

hen you become a parent, people line up to give you advice. I was prepared for every stage of parenthood, or so I thought.

Babies are totally dependent on you, but it’s kind of easy. It’s easy to anticipate their needs. Eat, sleep, poop, that’s the routine. Then you add in walking and talking. Then school. Then friends. Those stages are pretty much pre-planned.

Each of those steps, though, means they need you a little less. Eventually, you realize that they don’t really need you at all.

That realization slapped me in the face.

My youngest just got her license. I no longer get the, “Hey, mom, I want Starbucks. Will you take me?” She drives herself to school and to her friends’ houses. It was kind of a slap in the face.

I know that my job as a mom is never really done, but this transition into more of a mentor than a manager/tour guide is tough. I feel weird not being needed.

Of course, as I say that, I’m planning a trip to North Carolina with my oldest to watch her boyfriend graduate from the Marines School of Infantry. She still needs me a little, I guess.

My youngest still likes to come downstairs, plop down beside me and spill all the tea (for those who don’t have teenagers, that means gossip). She still asks for my advice. Sometimes she just seems to need some mom/daughter time.

With that being said, it’s truly amazing to know that you’ve created these wonderful, hilarious, smart, beautiful humans. I’ve truly enjoyed all stages of being a parent, but I have to say that this is the most fun. They may not rely on me for their every need, but they want to be around me. That is so much more rewarding.

Take a moment to appreciate the stages of your life. They’re just moments, but those moments can turn into the best memories.

For Katrina Sizemore, that meant leaving a comfortable life in California for the rural landscape of southern Indiana. That whole process started with a phone call.

John Sizemore’s lifelong friend moved to the area several years ago and opened an Honest Abe’s Roofing franchise. One day, he FaceTimed John to show him a deer. He told him it was on his property.

“We came out and we had a list of houses we wanted to look at,” Katrina said. “We ended up seeing that house and we put an offer on it. We were here for like a week and we ended up putting an offer in and that was it. We sold all our stuff and moved out here.”

John owned and operated a business in California’s central valley oil fields. Katrina had worked in education administration for 21 years. But, they headed to Indiana with just an idea of what they

wanted to do.

A little sooner than expected, they started Sizemore Outdoor Solutions. John said his ultimate goal is to be the premier outdoor builder in the area.

“We weren’t even really going to start a business at that point,” John said. “We were getting everything at the house done - getting carpet put in, paint put in, the yard was two foot tall when we moved in.”

That same friend that started the process of the Sizemores moving to Indiana got them their first job. John said he jumped in with two feet, even if Katrina was a bit more cautious.

“We really haven’t slowed down since,” he said.

“Being a small company, it has its ups and downs.

We don’t have that employee history that people can see, hey, we are growing and the quality of our work is top-notch. That’s not to sound cocky or arrogant, but that’s what we pride ourselves on. It

takes us a little bit longer than some of these bigger companies that have a lot of employees, but our product at the end has been worth the wait for our customers.”

John said finding work hasn’t been the difficult part. Finding employees has, “Our downfall is timing,” he said. “We just don’t have the manpower to stay on (a faster) timeline. It’s starting to turn around now. It’s getting better, but that is just part of the difficulty of being (a new busines). At home, I could make three phone calls and have 10 employees that are experienced. We did that a lot.

Here, I don’t have that connection.”

Even with a small-town feel, Bakersfield had the amenities that made life a bit more comfortable.

Katrina said she doesn’t necessarily miss those because she’s found what she needs in her adopted small community.

“I really thought I’d be in Evansville more,” she said. “I guess just because it has all the amenities that our old town had, but honestly, not to say anything bad about Evansville, but I don’t like to go there. I would prefer to give my business here locally because I would hope that people would do the same for us. I think probably Boonville and Newburgh are where (we shop). Boonville and Newburgh seem to be where our biggest base is. We try to stay here local when we’re shopping or when we’re doing like our shirts. We try to use local people. It’s kind of been good because you establish a relationship with people. Then when they hear, ‘Oh, so-and-so wants this done,’ they’re a little bit more quick to recommend us. That’s been kind of helpful, too.”

That word-of-mouth has been their best advertising.

“Gary and Debi, they called and we did their deck upstairs,” Katrina said. “Then, Trickey’s down the way, she’s getting ready to open all her stuff, so they referred us to her. So she’s called and wants us to do the work. I do like our social media and advertising and stuff through social media, but it’s really been word of mouth and that only happens in small, close-knit (communities) like this.”

And that pretty much describes Boonville and the rest of the community to John and Katrina.

“The town we’re from, Bakersfield, it’s an hour and a half north of Los Angeles, about three hours south of the San Fransisco area,” John said. “It’s a farming, oil field community. The whole central valley is. It’s all agricultural and oil fields. You have your businesses, but the driving force is oil fields.

I’ve been in the oil field my whole life and did construction off and on. When we were growing up, Boonville was kind of like what we grew up in in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Everybody kind of knew everybody. It was a small town. It was big enough that we had eight high schools in a 20-mile radius, but everybody knew everybody. When we moved out here, that’s what was a shocker for us. It sounds awkward, this is more of a home to me than where I grew up. The people are just genuinely accepting. We really haven’t ran across bad people.

That’s weird.”

It also helps that all their work is completely custom. John builds each element of his installations; he doesn’t use kits.

“We’ve had fireplaces where they start out saying, ‘We want it this tall.’ He gets it up there and gets it done and then they say, ‘Oh, maybe we want it taller than that.’ He’s done that, as well,”

Katrina said. “It’s custom. If it needs to fit into a tiny little spot, then he’ll make it fit in that tiny little area.”

Working together isn’t always easy, especially for a couple that has spent their marriage seeing each other on nights and weekends. John jokes that his boss is “mean.” Katrina prefers the term “organized.”

“I didn’t think twice about (agreeing to run the office),” Katrina said. “Then I remembered that I am organized and he is not. That’s where the difficulty is. We really don’t spend that much time together. Our office is in the house and he’s really not home. He’s gone almost all the time. It’s not like spending too much time together or anything like that. It’s I want things done a certain way and he’s more of a fly by the seat of his pants kind of guy.”

John took his birthday off. It was the first day off he’s taken in months, including when his granddaughters were in town.

“We can’t do it by ourselves,” he said. “Now that we’ve picked up a couple guys that are really starting to buy in to what we’re doing, just in the last few weeks (it’s gotten better)... I’m not going to be successful if they’re not successful. We want them to be part of this and be rewarded for the job they’re doing.”

Not long after John and Katrina moved to the area, their parents did, as well. They’re all building on the same property. Their daughter, son-inlaw and grandchildren are still in California, but Katrina said she hopes to see them move over eventually, as well.

“It’s become kind of a family affair,” John said. “They’re backing us 100 percent.

They’re doing what they can, we’re doing what we can. It’s becoming something I want it to be.”

John said the ultimate goal is to become the premier outdoor builder in the area. He often tells his clients that he’s setting up for tomorrow, but that’s kind of what he’s doing in his business model, as well.

“I enjoy doing what I’m doing,” he said. “I started over at 52 years old. We walked away from great paying jobs. But, I’m happier than I’ve ever been.

It’s stressful doing what we’re doing, but I stress more for her than I do for myself. She walked away from a very comfortable life. She threw everything in and said, ‘I’ll go with you.’ I don’t know if that made her smart or what it made her. It’s been very trying, but at the same time, it’s been very rewarding. But, in five or 10 years, I’d like to be two or three of what we are now. Of course, we’d still be maintainable and still have the same quality of work, just at a better pace.“

A flowery past

hilip Lutz Jr. was lawyer in Boonville. At the time of his death, the family had been in the area for more than 50 years.

According to his obituary, his professional career as a lawyer wasn’t what he was known for.

Philip was a quite accomplished horticulturist. He founded Phil Lutz Peony Farm on Maple Grove Road in Boonville and dedicated 60 acres to growing Indiana’s state flower. It was said to be the largest of its kind in the country.

In order to run both a successful law career and farm, he had have to have people. That’s where Ellis and Ada Clark Bratcher came in. The couple lived and worked on the farm. Their children, Lillie Everett, Robert Bratcher, Iva “Ivy” Criag and Mabel Carter, worked there, as well.

They weren’t the last generation to work at the farm. Ellis and Ada’s grandchildren and

greatgrandchildren also did stints in the peony fields.

“helped” their parents and grandparents cultivate peonies and other flowers. When they were old enough, they were put to work.

Charles Craig and James Carter farmed and packaged the flowers by the time they were 14 years old.

Then, of course, came great-grandchildren.

Judy Payne Davis said that she remembers working with her cousin, Annetta Baker Curl, as young girls. Their job was to package the flowers to be sent to florists all over the United States. They were to place a dozen cut peony stems in long flower boxes. The flowers were not in bloom, but the petals were still in tight

buds. Judy said she and Annetta were not yet teenagers and would spend their earnings at a local department store, The Model, on flowered dresses.

Cheyenne Craig Whitehead was too young to remember the actual farm, but said she would hear her dad speak of it often when they passed the spot on Maple Grove Roadß.

“Dad would always comment and tell stories about his family’s time working and visiting the peony farm,” she said. “As you can see, it was multi-generational for our family during the Depression and afterwards.”

hannon PaytonLindsey had been cleaning houses for people for several years while her son was growing up. She had spent years taking him to and from different activities. When he turned 16, she found herself with a lot of time on her hands.

“I was just looking for something else as a side gig,” she said. “We loved the signs. All of my family had been ordering through the Evansville location.”

She approached the Evansville franchise owner and asked if she’d ever considered letting someone else buy into the surrounding area. She was.

She wanted to limit herself to just Evansville and wanted someone to take over the outlying areas.

“It just kind of all fell in place,” Shannon said.

“I was wanting something like that and she was wanting to get rid of this area because it was far for her. We go twice - we go and set it up and then

we go the next night or the next morning and pick it up. It was just perfect.”

Shannon said it’s a family business. Both her husband and son will pitch in when they’re needed. All the local franchise owners are close enough to offer inventory help, as well.

“It’s nice that there’s more locations now to help each other out,” she said.

Warrick County, business has picked up since Shannon started her local franchise. Shannon services most of Warrick County, with the exception of Newburgh and Lynnville.

“When you buy into the franchise, you basically buy ZIP codes,” she explained, Shannon said she enjoys celebrating the good things in life.

“The signs are just so fun,” she said. “Normally, you’re dealing with happy occasions like anniversaries and birthdays and people are celebrating.

When you find people like it, it’s just an uplifting job.”

Yard size doesn’t matter, either. Shannon said she has setups for any space.

“Even if you have the smallest yard - and there are some in Boonville, especially down around then courthouse - we can usually make it work.”

The first step is filling out a booking request online. That doesn’t obligate a booking, but it starts the inquiry process.

“I just respond through there and they give me some ideas of what they’re looking for,” she said.

Starting a business during a pandemic is a scary undertaking, but Shannon said this business was perfect for the times. Not only was the buy-in

reasonable, it’s a non-contact thing. It offers the perfect way to celebrate without putting anyone at risk.

“I was scared, but I knew that this was the perfect thing to do during the pandemic because there’s no contact with anybody,” she said. “The whole thing is basically done online.”

The majority of her business has been in Boonville. It’s been harder to get the word out to the outlying areas.She recently had a local order from Texas, though.

“They said they usually come in, but can’t come in this year,” she explained. “So, they wanted to do the sign... I just think it’s exciting that way. If you have relatives out of town, you can order a sign as a surprise.”

Sign Gypsies celebrate many milestones in the lives of their customers. Shannon said she has yet to do a new baby sign, but it’s something she’s looking forward to.

“That would be a nice surprise whenever you’re coming home from the hospital,” she said. “I’ve been anxiously waiting to do a new baby sign.”

As a general rule, Shannon said she needs a couple weeks to make sure she has the correct supplies for a particular celebration. She’s put things together in as little as 24 hours, though.

More notice is always better, though.

“Those kinds of occasions are last minute because they’re not planned,” she said. “You can’t plan days ahead that they’re coming home (from

the hospital).”

Shannon is very active with the schools. She’s donated several - including when the Boonville softball team was heading to their second state championship.

“I’ve done donated signs in the spring when I started,” she said.

“It was all new to the schools... It’s always fun to do those non-for-profit organizations because they’re so excited about the sign. Those kinds of things are fun.”

Shannon has lived in the area for 12 years. Her husband is originally from Newburgh, but they wanted the smaller schools that Boonville offers.

“We just heard really good things about (the schools),” she said. “We were in Evansville on the north side... This has really worked out perfect. He’s done fabulous in all the schools. I cannot say enough good stuff about Boonville schools.”

Prices begin at $65 for a mini setup. A regular setup is around $85.

Come one, come all to the

big

Boonville

fair

F

or just shy of a century, the Big Boonville Fair was a fixture in the county. It all started in December 1856 when a group of prominent men got together and founded the Warrick County Agricultural Society.

Within just a few days, the men purchased property and began building an amphitheater, a barn, a wooden fence and a race track.

The Warrick County Fair was born.

In the early years, everyone who was anyone was seen walking the midway. Women donned their fan-

ciest dresses and men wore their Sunday best. The advertisements in local newspapers offered discounts on permanent waves, hats and other clothing items.

People came - by horse and buggy on muddy, narrow, rutted roads - from all over the county to participate in the festivities. The heavily-wooded road made the perfect hiding spot for thieves and robbers and may fairgoers fell victim. Eventually, stones were hauled from the courthouse and county workers cut down the trees to make

26 September/October 2021 the road safer for buggy travel.

In the late 1880s, Americans had recovered from the financial hardships caused by the Civil War and began to crave more big-time entertainment. So, the Big Boonville Fair began to feature variety shows.

As the years went by , the acts that were featured at the fair became more and more exciting. For a time, a big draw was the traveling circuses that performed under the three huge tents on the fairgrounds. The circuses came into town in a flurry of trumpet blasts, crashing cymbals and music from the calliope. The elephants were quickly put the work, helping the roustabouts raise the tents. After a long day’s work, the elephants were treated to a bath in City Lake and given all the cool water they could drink, supplied by local boys in exchange for free tickets to the performance.

According to an audit done for the 1952-1953 fair circuit, it cost the board of directors $17,190 to put on one fair. That year, they actually took a loss of $75.

Part of that funding came from selling shares of the organization. Among the shareholders were Derr, Roth and Weyerbacher. Dick Johnson, who Johnson Park is named for, and his father were also shareholders. Many of those same people served on the board of directors.

Like the present-day Warrick County 4-H Fair, the Big Boonville Fair featured exhibits by residents. In

addition to bragging rights, though, many exhibits paid dividends to the winners.

The final Big Boonville Fair was held the week of Sunday, July 31, 1955. It featured more than 1,500 exhibits, Jack Kochman’s Hell Drivers and countrywestern singer Ray Price and his Cherokee Cowboys.

Even former president Bill Clinton campaigned for his wife, Hillary, where the midway once bustled. The fairgrounds was sold to the Warrick County School Corporation in 1955. Boonville High School was built on the site in 1958.

fter more than a year, the Warrick County Council on Aging is back open!

The local senior center reopened June 1, but with a few restrictions. Carry-in dinners are on hold until further notice, but social eating of your own bagged lunch is allowed. Hand sanitizer stations are available at each entrance. Masks are optional. Officials do ask that if you are sick to please stay home.

WCCOA’s first fundraiser of the year, selling blackberry cobbler at the Warrick County 4-H Fair, was a success. The center is currently selling raffle tickets for a sunflower themed wall hanging. Tickets are $2 each or three for $5. The drawing will be held Sept. 23.

The senior center recently hosted a painting party fundraiser. Twenty-two people attended, and another is scheduled for September. Follow Warrick County Council on Aging on Facebook for more information.

The Browne Sisters, along with Monte Skelton, Bob Green and Dave Mathews, will provide three hours of music on Saturday, Sept. 25 from 7 to 10 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $30 each and include appetizers. A cash bar will be available. Tickets available at Miller’s Five and Dime on the Square or at the Warrick County Museum. Call the Museum at 812.897.3100 for details.

The Browne sisters are local treasures. They got their start more than 30 years ago in a production of The 1940s Radio Hour at the Evansville Civic Theatre. They shared a role in the production and have been entertaining audiences together ever since.

This is a fundraiser for the Warrick County Museum. Be sure to follow them on Facebook for information about the latest special exhibits. This summer featured a 50’s display.

The museum is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 1 to 4 p.m. and the first and third Saturday of the month.
