Taylorsville Lake State Park

One of Spencer County’s biggest draws is the beautiful Taylorsville Lake. Surrounded by undeveloped wooded shoreline, the lake is the perfect getaway for a day on the water.

Boaters of all kinds launch their crafts into the lake at one of four ramps on the lake, and on a warm Summer day, you can find houseboats, pontoon boats, jet skis, runabouts, bass boats, speed boats, kayaks, canoes and virtually any type of recreational watercraft imaginable.

The fishing is known far and wide. Various fishing tournaments are held on the lake during the year.

Whether you’re hoping to net your limit of crappie, land that trophy largemouth, or pull up a 30 pound or larger catfish, Taylorsville Lake has it all.

The lake was designed and built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers under the Flood Control Act of 1966. Construction began in 1974 and the lake was opened in 1983, at a cost of $103 million.

The purpose of the lake was primarily flood relief, as it dammed up the Salt River a few miles above Taylorsville to help prevent catastrophic flooding. However, the economic benefit from tourism and recreation was another real boost to Spencer County.

The lake, dam and spillway are operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, while the Kentucky Department of Parks operates 4,282 acres around the lake, which includes Taylorsville Lake State Park.

The park offers camping, horse and hiking trails

and other activities.

The four boat ramps on the lake are: Possum Ridge, which is located within Taylorsville Lake State Park, Settlers Trace, which is adjacent to the privately-owned Taylorsville Lake Marina, and two smaller ramps, one on Chowning Lane in extreme southeastern Spencer County, and Van Buren, located just across the Anderson County line.

The Spencer County Public Schools Preschool program is available for 3- and 4-year-old children who are determined eligible for services according to the Kentucky Department of Education guidelines based on an identified developmental delay and/ or economic status. The Spencer County Public Schools Preschool program also accepts children on a tuition basis as spots are available, who do not qualify based upon KDE’s guidelines. The goal of the program is to make the most of children’s early learning capabilities and prepare them for continued success in elementary school. All children must be screened to determine eligibility for the program.
