As the president of the Chamber of Commerce, I see so much every day that most people do not know about. At the Turner County Development Authority meetings, I see the work a core group of people are doing to make this county a better place for industry, business and residences. Like every county in Georgia and the rest of the nation, Turner County faces challenges. Where some people see obstacles, we see a way to grow stronger, more durable and a way to learn something new. “The impediment to action advances action. Spend some time here talking to the people and you will find out we are rich in history and our plans for the future use proven strategies to reach our goals. Talk to our industries. Ask them why they stay here. Ask Phoenix Wood Products why they have expanded several times. Talk to Bird Song Peanuts to learn why easy access to Interstate 75 is so important. The people at Golden Peanut will be glad to tell you about their history in the middle of Ashburn. Our home-grown retail shops like Keith-A-Que, Piggly Wiggly and Carroll’s Sausage are vital parts of our community. They can be counted on to support what our community is doing. Here are just a few of the great things we recently accomplished and what we are working toward. A Class 3 County Fire Department - The County Commission approved a plan to take the County’s fire department from a Class 9, which means a fire department is in place, to a Class 3 which will put Turner County near the top. Few rural communities can boast of a Class 3 rating. This translates directly into lower property insurance costs. The City of Ashburn already has a world-class fire department and is ranked in the top three percent in the nation. Work Ready - The school system is embracing a ready-to-work education program for students who want to enter the workforce directly after graduation. We have dual-enrollment in place now. Students can graduate with a high school diploma and a technical college certificate in several different fields. More Retail - Currently, our retail base has expanded greatly and there are future plans for even more businesses, especially in our downtown area. But even outside of our downtown we are seeing immense growth. The County Commission and the Development Authority partnered to finish Sedric Carithers Drive which will expand our Interstate presence. Several business owners are already planning on opening new locations in this new area. Airport Funding - More than a decade of work is finally paying off at the Turner County Airport. The mile-long runway can handle most modern planes. Several private planes are now based there, which means the Airport Authority can apply for federal aviation grant money to continue to expand the airport. Current plans call for more hangars and a self-service fueling station. Community Events - After a 2-year break because of COVID-19, the Fire Ant Festival returns the 4th weekend in March each year. Wanee Lake Country Club hosts several charity golf tournaments each year. The annual Christmas Parade in December draws people downtown to kick off the Holiday Season. The Chamber of Commerce is involved in so many things in the community. Our board of directors is a working board. They roll up their sleeves and pitch in. The board works hard to promote and support the business community here. I could list so much more, but my space is limited. Just know the Chamber of Commerce is here to help. Some, like Blue Ridge Mountain EMC and Habersham EMC, have created affiliates and are already providing highspeed service to members and many are exploring or have formed partnerships with broadband providers. In addition to todayʼs news, other EMC partnerships and projects were announced recently by Amicalola EMC, Carroll EMC, Central Georgia EMC, Colquitt EMC, Diverse Power, Middle Georgia EMC, Satilla REMC, Southern Rivers Energy, Tri-County EMC and Washington EMC, resulting in expanded access for approximately 187,000 Georgia homes and businesses. “The announced broadband project between Irwin EMC and Conexon Connect will have a significant impact

new grant program intended to activate Downtown Ashburn revitalize historic properties is offered by the Turner County Development Authority. The Stability and Improvement Matching Grant program is designed to encourage property owners to make property improvements. The TCDA hopes this will lead to more businesses in downtown. This program provides 50% of the project's costs up to $3,500 once all work has been completed and approved by the TCDA. To receive the full amount of the grant, an applicant must spend $7,000 working on the building. The $3,500 reimbursement is for approved work. “The matching grant funds are designed to finance interior and exterior improvements to a property owner or tenantʼs commercial building that will be pleasing and complimentary to local design guidelines or concepts acceptable to the Turner County Development Authority,” said Sam McCard, Executive Director of the Development Authority. The program is designed to retain and attract businesses, strengthen the Business District, increase utilization of downtown buildings, restore economic vitality and enhance property values. The program is adminis-

tered on a first come first served basis. “The grant covers mostly exterior improvements, but there are some allowances for specific interior work to be done as well,” said McCard. Some of the exterior uses include signs, awnings, painting, outdoor lighting, restoration of façade or historical features. Substantial changes to the front of any downtown building must be approved by the Ashburn Historic Preservation Board as well as the TCDA. Interior uses are limited to painting, carpeting, ceiling tiles, restroom fixtures and the new design of office or retail spaces. Other improvements may get special permission by the TCDA, which meets monthly. A copy of the grant and stipulations are provided at the Chamber of Commerce website, turnerchamber.com/incentives. Prospective applicants should contact the TCDA to get preapproval before beginning the process. The TCDA will accept applications until the money runs out. Employees Better Building

The Turner County Workforce Ready Pathway starts students on the road to career, college or both in the 9th Grade

Turner County is implementing a High School Workforce Ready Pathway and Courses program at the high school. "We are addressing the need for a better prepared workforce in our community. We are going to do our part in preparing our graduates," said Superintendent Craig Matthews. The new program puts an emphasis on

English, math and sciences, social studies to include economics and a Workforce Readiness pathway. Students also have a choice of 3 units of a foreign language, arts or Career, Technical and Agriculture Education (CTAE) instruction. "Beginning with the graduating class of 2025, our graduates will be required to complete the Workforce Ready Pathway. This three-course pathway will allow us to teach

our students the employability skills they need for success in their careers," Mr. Matthews said. The idea behind this is to make students ready to get a job after graduation. "The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World" is the official name of the Statue of Liberty. It was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the United States and is recognized as a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on Oct. 28, 1886. It was designated as a National Monument in 1924. Sycamore Park has a scale replica. The parks in Ashburn, Sycamore and Rebecca also have handicapped swingsets thanks to the County Commission. Turner County offers a full educational experience from PreKindergarten through 12th grade. Each campus has advanced student courses and placement. The middle school offers high-achieving 8th graders the chance to earn high school credits. At the high school, students can dual enroll with Wiregrass Technical College and graduate with a diploma and technical certifcate in several different programs. We have after school programs that offer academic tutoring and counseling. Our extra curricular activities cover a wide range of sporting, academic and professional development programs. The Turner County community is involved throughout the school system from reading programs at the elementary school to youth apprenticeship work study programs at the high school. Learn more at
