A letter from our Chamber President The year of 2021 has been quite a ride for everyone. Between Covid and our February blizzard, it has been an experience for everyone. But we are getting back to normal activities and look forward to seeing everyone again.

We will be having some chamber events coming this fall, including the Fall Holiday market, chamber luncheons, and chamber board meetings. One of the meetings will be to view the video that was done by Loaded Sound of the Heritage Festival. So stay tuned and check the chamber website for updates on these events.

Our 2021 Heritage Festival, which celebrated Groesbeck’s 150 year anniversary, was held Memorial weekend. This will be an annual event, but we are now discussing if the event should be moved to a different weekend. The attendance was not where we hoping, but the weather that week did not help. If you have opinion on when festival should be held, please feel free to contact the chamber and share your thoughts.

A RECEPTION SPOTLIGHT FROM THE GROESBECK CONVENTION CENTER BAGELS AND COFFEE

Beneath a canopy of pecan trees on a warm, sunny day, Victoria and Brennen would say, “I Do,” on May 15, 2021. The two love being surrounded by green trees so this particular location on Victoria’s grandparents property in Groesbeck, Texas, was absolutely perfect.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN… Victoria and Brennen began talking to each other through a dating app called Coffee Meets Bagel. Eventually they decided that they should meet and they did just that. They met at Black

Walnut Cafe and enjoyed fancy grilled cheese sandwiches while Brennen talked Victoria’s ears off! Afterwards they walked around the park at the Shops at Legacy in Plano, Texas.

On March 9, 2020 Brennen proposed to Victoria at Devils Bridge in Sedona, Arizona while they were on vacation with Victoria’s family. They had just hiked a four mile trail up a mountain and on the way back down, they took a break. During this break, Brennen got down on one knee and asked Victoria for her hand in marriage on the side of a huge rock that was overlooking the mountain valley in front of her family.

To this day, there isn’t a day that goes by where one of them doesn’t crack the other one up with some silly joke or gesture. Victoria says she’s constantly laughing and saying, “You are stupid!,” while wiping laughing tears out of her eyes.

They enjoy spending time together and often have date nights which typically include grabbing a meal curbside from a restaurant and going home to watch a movie with ice cream or going out to eat followed by exploring random stores on the way home.

Brennen loves that Victoria is supportive, caring, hard-working and nerdy. Victoria loves that Brennen is creative, has the ability to calm her down when she’s stressed out and tells great jokes which make her laugh.

THEIR WEDDING DAY…

Victoria and Brennen wanted a wedding ceremony that took place among green trees and a reception that was full of laughter, fun and memories. Their wedding day was all that and more! The ceremony took place on Victoria’s grandparents property with plenty of mature pecan trees. Brennen stood at the altar with the officiant (Victoria’s grandmother) and his best man, waiting for his beautiful bride to be escorted

down the aisle by her father. Victoria’s entrance was unique. She sat on the back of a Corvette convertible as her dad drove her to the beginning of the aisle. He put the car in park and proceeded to walk her down the aisle to Brennen to give away his little girl.

After the ceremony everyone traveled to the Groesbeck Convention Center for the reception.

As they made their entrance, the two immediately went into their first dance. You could definitely see how happy the two are together!

After they shared their first dance, it was the Father/Daughter Dance followed the Mother/Son Dance. During both of these dances, the newlyweds invited ALL father/daughter and mother/son duos to dance with them! There were so many smiles from everyone in the room!

The dancing continued throughout the evening and there was plenty of laughter shared! Memories were made.

Chamber of Commerce Structure and Organization Each chapter of a chamber is governed by a board of directors who advise the chapter on strategies and policies determined by the chapter's mission. The board manages day-to-day affairs and updates the chapter policies. Board members, also referred to as an executive council, are elected within each chapter. Most chapters have an acting president and CEO, for example. Members of the board are elected based on their leadership experience, business background, and ability to execute chapter goals.

In addition to a governing board of directors, a chapter will have at least one employee. Some chapters may have more than one employee and be structured like a business. Employees work to market the chapter, in overseeing memberships, and in tracking the chapter's finances.

In addition to the employees, a chapter has committees to focus on executing specific goals based on the chapter's mission — such as education, environment, or healthcare. Members of the chapter can volunteer for these committees to get more involved.

How a Chamber of Commerce Functions A chamber of commerce chapter is made up of a dues-based membership. Each chapter offers different levels of membership, along with unique volunteer opportunities and a dues structure.

80% of respondents in a Shapiro Group survey were more likely to purchase goods or services in the future from companies belonging to a chamber of commerce.

Each chapter is designated as a 501(c)(6) corporation under the federal tax law. This means a chapter is a nonprofit entity with the authority to represent its membership in matters of policy and debate (unlike charitable organizations that do not act on behalf of members).

Dues are required by each member to contribute to the overall operating costs. In addition to dues, a chamber can raise money to cover additional operating costs by holding fundraising activities and charging fees to chamber events. These costs help the chapter stay operational since multiple businesses rely on their local chamber for networking and resources.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE

A chapter can be found at the local, state, city, regional,

or national level. Some chapters are even associated with specific neighborhoods within a community. Still others are formed to represent a group of specific business interests. Examples of this include female business owners chapters or the National Black Chamber of Commerce.

Since each chapter has its own mission focused on economic vitality throughout a designated area, each can support different industries or initiatives. For example, some focus on economic development while others connect a specific community to local businesses. While each chamber acts independently, multiple chambers can join together to form a larger, collective group serving a similar interest. For instance, several county chapters can join together to form a larger regional chapter to pool together resources.

URGENT CARE WITH YOU IN MIND!

Summer is almost here. Please pay attention to heat advisory notices. When outside you can do everything is all right, but your body can still fail to keep you cool enough to live.

Signs or symptoms of getting too hot are headache, quit sweating, chills, stomach cramping, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, visual disturbance.

It takes at least 15-20 min to cool down inside air conditioning, before going back out into the heat. On a normal day, a person should drink at least 64-82 ounces of water per day.

Now if you are out in the heat sweating, drink 3 parts water to one part Gatorade, you need fluid volume with water, and the Gatorade supplies volume and electrolytes. The electrolytes let you know you are thirsty, but you still need your fluid volume with water.

As I said earlier you can do everything right. Take breaks, shade completely cool down in AC for 15-20 min. But if your body temperature rises and stays high after you ignored the signs & symptoms you are in serious trouble.

If someone has succumbed to heat prostration (awake) or heat stroke (out), call 911. Get their clothes off-cool them down. Removing the clothes lets the heat escape from the body. Next, put a fan on them, air convection will pull the heat away from the body. If you can move to a cool area of shade. If a shower is not available, use ice packs to the groin area, axilla area, and carotids bilaterally until EMS arrives.

Again don’t ignore your FIRST signs and symptoms.

Drink before you get thirsty. Take frequent breaks.

Wear light-colored loose clothing.
