Good afternoon graduates, staff, family, and friends. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to speak today. On behalf of the graduating class, I would like to take the time to thank all who have helped us through these past thirteen years. You all have been such a blessing to us through your continuous support of each and every endeavor we chose to take on. We thank you for helping us in anything that we struggled with. We appreciate everything you all have done for us.

Fellow graduates, 13 years ago we began this journey together when we walked into Huntingdon Primary School. It was then that we met those who surround us, those who we can now call our friends, and those we now know will always be there for us in times of need. And now, 13 years later, we prepare ourselves to cross this field one last time as a united class before we go our separate ways and begin a new chapter in our lives.

Our time at Huntingdon has taught us many lessons. We have had the lessons that everyone is taught, like being kind to others and it’s okay to make mistakes. We have learned the lessons that can help us through challenges like not being scared to ask for help because, despite what we may think, we do not

have all the answers. We have learned to persevere through challenges because, if this past year has taught us anything, it would be that nothing is guaranteed.

We have had anything but a normal year.

Despite this, we have taken what we were given, and we made the best of it which is exactly what we need to do whenever something comes up along the way. And we have learned the lessons that may not have been obvious, like don’t be scared to dream big.

Our time at Huntingdon has also given us memories that will last us a lifetime. We have taken field trips and had field days. We have had homecomings that lasted a week and others that lasted a month. We have had normal school years, and we have had a school year filled with uncertainties. These memories were just a sliver of all the great times that we shared as a class through the past 13 years.

So graduates, as we prepare to walk across the field and enter this next section of our lives, do not forget those who will be there for you no matter what. Do not forget the lessons Huntingdon has taught us because they will help us in the future. And always remember the amazing memories this school has given you.

I wish you all the best of luck on your future endeavors.

SALUTATORIAN - Adyson Shands

It is a privilege and great honor to stand here before you today. First and foremost, I would like to thank all of you on behalf of the class of 2021 for making this day possible: Our devoted teachers and faculty, our family and friends, and lastly each other. For we have shown great strength and drive to make it here. I want to personally thank our faculty for never giving up hope, even when the days were more challenging than you could ever imagine.

Your creativeness and innovative ways allowed us to successfully complete the school year.

Your kind and reassuring faces supported us through it all. If anything, I believe you have taught us all the importance of perseverance. Your continuous efforts did not once go unnoticed. This year has proven itself to be like no other. Each day was an obstacle. However, it was one we pushed through together. And today, we gather in Paul Ward Stadium, as a class and community to commemorate each of us on this journey.

The past twelve years of our lives have been spent as students. However, when I reflect on my time as a whole at Huntingdon High School, the academic lessons are not the first thing that comes to my mind, probably to my parents’ dismay. Instead, it is the life lessons I have learned that I choose to truly remember. It is the people who were kind when they did not have

to be, the teachers who taught me much more than how to solve logarithms, and the experiences I gained. It is the people like Mrs. Ginger and Mrs. Lott with their reassuring words of wisdom and constant motivation. As important as grades have been to my success, they did not define it.

The truth is, the kind of person we are is much more important. Character is important. When someone says character, we automatically associate it with certain words: integrity, honesty, loyalty and kindness and the list could go on. Because character is what defines us, it is who we are when no one is looking. Do you take the extra cookie if no one will ever know or do you do the right thing?

As young adults, we are constantly facing this question. Any school can educate you, but it takes a special one to take the time to better each of their students as a person. And for that, I applaud you Huntingdon Special School District.

I will leave you with a couple of quotes that my mom and I have grown to love…

“There are four things you can’t recover: The stone after it’s thrown. The word after it’s said. The occasion after it’s missed.

And the time after it’s gone.”

So I encourage each of you to live to the fullest. Always remember: others may influence your life, but no-one can control the destination of your future, but you.

Huntingdon High School graduates 73 Seventy-three Huntingdon High School seniors graduated on Sunday, May 16 at 2 p.m. at Paul Ward Stadium.

Carson Warman gave the invocation followed by the playing of the “Star Spangled Banner” by the Huntingdon High School Band.

The welcome speech was given by senior class president Carter Cary followed by the presentation of the top ten awards

by Huntingdon High School principal Dr. Jonathan Kee. The salutatorian address was given by

Senior Briley Lankford recognized the Beta Club members.

Dr. Jonathan Kee and several special guests passed out scholarships. Handing out the diplomas were Dr. Lee Carter, chairman of the Huntingdon Special School District Board of Education, and board member Dr. Tim Tucker with Director of Schools Pat Dillahunty presenting the graduates.

The traditional Passing of the Torch was done by a brother and sister duo. Senior class president Carter Cary passed the torch to junior class president Campbell Cary.

The Alumni Association introduction was done by Brooke Hodges.

Samuel Parish gave the benediction followed by the playing of the Alma Mater by the high school band.

The closing remarks were made by Dr. Kee.

VALEDICTORIAN Bethany Miller, daughter of Mike and Marcia Miller, is valedictorian of the class. She has been very active with extra curricular activities while in high school.

She served as secretary of both the Beta and Math Clubs. She is also a member of HOSA, Science Club, Mayor’s Teen Advisory Council, Mustang Mentors and is a color guard with the Marching Mustangs.

She says her favorite activity while in high school was performing in the band on Friday nights at the football games and at Saturday competition. She plans on attending the University of Tennessee at Martin and becoming a nurse. Within the next ten years, she expects to be helping children stay strong and fight through whatever life throws at them.

SALUTATORIAN Adyson Shands, daughter of Roger and Tina Shands, is salutatorian of the class. During high school she has been a member of the AB, Science, Beta and Math Clubs and is on the yearbook staff. She is a member of the Mayor’s Teen Advisory Council.

She has been a cheerleader and served as the cheer captain. She plans on studying kinesiology at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She says she has enjoyed her association with the faculty and football Friday nights. In ten years she says she hopes to see herself in a successful career that is changing lives and affecting the everyday lives of children and families.

Alli Reeves, daughter of Clint and Debra Reeves, ranks third in the class.

She has been a reporter for the AB Club and was a member of the Beta, Math, and Science Clubs. She has been on the yearbook staff. She has most enjoyed Friday night football games while in high school.

For college she will be attending UT at Martin and majoring in education. In the future it is her goal to be among those who are involved in shaping young children’s minds.

Grant Bartholomew, son of Shane and Julie Bartholomew, ranks fourth in the class. He is a Mustang mentor and has been a member of the Beta Club for four years, and is in the Math Club and is a Student Council member. He has excelled in sports as he has been a four-year member of the football, basketball and baseball teams. In 2020 he was All Region in football, a member of TN Football Coaches Association AllState team, Quarterback Club MVP and team captain. In 2021, he was an All District basketball player and team MVP and on the All District team, and MVP in baseball. He has much enjoyed playing football, basketball and baseball during his high school years, spending time with friends and participating in Huntingdon High School homecoming traditions. In ten years he hopes to have a career that he enjoys and be living in a community where he will raise a family.

Emma Raim, daughter of Bill and Julie Raim, ranks fifth in the class.

She is a member of the Beta and Math Clubs and has been the drum major for two years for the Marching Mustangs.

She says her enjoyment during high school has come from being the leader of the HHS Marching Mustangs and showing support to the other clubs and sport teams. She plans to attend UT Martin as a pre-veterinary science major in hopes of becoming a veterinarian.

In ten years she hopes to be a veterinarian practicing in her own clinic.

Anna Colette, daughter of Kelly and Paula Colvett, ranks sixth in the class. Her activities include being a member of the Beta and Math Clubs. She served as FFA vice president and is a distinguished scholar and Tennessee scholar.

She says that she has enjoyed her Ag class and working on the Ag farm during her high school years. She plans to attend UT-Martin and major in Ag business. In the future she plans on owning a business/farm.

Jayden McGee, daughter of Joey and Sherry McGee, ranks seventh in the class. She was involved in Teen Health and was in HOSA, Math and Science Clubs and Student Council. She was also active in many church events. She says she has enjoyed the traditions the class has done such as the homecoming parade and pep rally.

Her plans are to attend MTSU and major in either pre-pharmaceutical studies or in biology to become a physician. In ten years she sees himself as hopefully doing something she loves, working hard and being happy.

Matthew Jones, son of Mark and Miranda Jones, ranks eighth in the class. He says that most of his activities have evolved around church.

He has enjoyed hanging out with friends during his high school years. He plans on attending UT Martin and majoring in computer engineering.

In the future he would like to have a family and a meaningful career.

Madison Hughes, daughter of Melissa Cabler and Dennis Hughes, ranks ninth in the class.

She was a member of the Beta, FFA and Science Clubs and the Student Council. She was a cheerleader her freshman year.

She says she has enjoyed the Ag class and the fun she has had during high school. She plans on attending UTM and majoring in Ag-Science. In the future she wants to be successful and happy.

Carter Cary, son of Mike and Susan Cary, ranks tenth in the class.

During high school he says he has enjoyed being class president, playing football and being involved in church activities at First Baptist Church. He says he has enjoyed all the activities in school. He plans on attending UT Knoxville and majoring in biology.

In the future he plans on living in Carroll County.

Members of the Board of Education, Director of Schools David Duncan, Principal Joe Norval, faculty members, family, and fellow graduates: The day many of us have been waiting for is finally here. But, now that it is here, I find myself looking back on all the moments that are now memories to us.

One day as we look back, today will be a memory as well. With that being said, I encourage you all to make the best out of this short time you have left with the classmates who have been by your side for many years. As a class, we have overcome many obstacles. We have created a bond like no other. Graduating amidst a pandemic is a privilege many do not get to experience. I believe this has made us all stronger and more resilient. As fearful as it is, it has taught us many lessons that we will carry throughout our entire lives.

As each you go forward in your life, whether you’re heading to a trade school, a university or simply wherever the wind takes you, remember to do so with an open mind and a full heart. Be ready for whatever the world throws at you and always keep God first no matter where you end up.

Remember to thank your family, teachers, administrators, and friends for helping you to get to this special day.

Thank you to all of our teachers who have worked so hard to educate me and for never letting me give up. An educa-

tion is truly one of the most valuable assets a person can possess.

Thank you all for taking the time to help me reach this special honor. I truly could not have done it without each of you. Thank you to the board of education and administrators for making the past 7 and a half years of my life ones I will always cherish. And thank you for making today possible for the class of 2021.

Thank you to my friends for always being there for me and encouraging me throughout everything. Thank you for accepting me and treating me as any other student. I cannot think of anyone else I would rather have spent these years with. Thank you to my family for being my backbone throughout it all. I would not be where I am today without you.

Thank you Mom and thank you Dad, for always believing in me and pushing me to be the best version of myself. And thank you, class of 2021, for memories and friendships I will never forget.

Winston Churchill once said, “Success is not final, and failure is not fatal.” As we depart today, I pray all of you strive for a life full of success. If failure ever appears, keep moving forward until you succeed.

I have no doubt each and every one of you will do amazing things and leave a mark on this world.

To the members of the board of education, Director of Schools David Duncan, Principal Joe Norval, faculty members, family, friends, and fellow classmates: I think I speak for our entire class by saying that the question, “Why us” has been a constant thought of ours all year long. Why did a global pandemic have to occur during our senior year? Why did we not get to experience all the activities and events that would happen during normal circumstances? I wonder every day what it would have been like to have gotten a “regular” senior year, but this year has made me much more appreciative of the few things that we were able to experience as a class.

I want to give a special thank you to the teachers, coaches, staff, and parents who tried their absolute hardest to give us a normal final year of high school. Your

hard work and dedication did not go unseen. All of you people that make up this community have treated us like their own children since we have been on this hill.

You all have spent countless hours in the concession stands raising money for our organizations. We have spent many miles on the road together to play-off games, conventions, and field trips. And you have all given us a foundation of what a person of good moral character is supposed to look like.

The Class of 2021 is a group of young men and women who are ready to enter the real world. We are a diverse group, and I cannot wait to see what God has in store for each and every one of you. I pray that we all remember where we came from once we enter this big world.

Central graduates 34 seniors on May 14 Central High School graduated 34 seniors on Friday night, May 14 on the Joe T. Herndon football field at 7:30 p.m.

Senior Thomas Crews gave the benediction that was followed by the high school band playing the “Star Spangled Banner.”

The president’s welcome was given by Noah Hampton.

Central High School principal Joe Norval recognized the honor graduates followed by the presentation of the state distinction graduates.

Seniors who wore various color cords were recognized.

ACT senior awards were presented to students who earned 26 or higher on the ACT. The students were Anna Claire Batte, Nevaeh Davis and Zachary Gray.

Awards and special honors were presented by the principal.

Norval presented the class of 2021. Director of Schools David Duncan handed the diplomas to Board of Education member Michael Graves who passed each one on to a graduate.

The band played the “Alma Mater” followed by the benediction by Noah Hampton.

After turning their tassels and walking to the side of the field, graduates threw their caps.

VALEDICTORIAN Nevaeh Davis, daughter of David and Summer Davis, was valedictorian of the class with a GPA of 4.0. She was involved in a number of clubs in school. They included the clubs of FCA, Student Council, Beta, ACE, BLA, FCCLA, History, Math, Chemistry, Teen Health Council, Spanish and C. She has also played softball and basketball and served as the football manager. The honors she has received include HOBY, Carroll County Youth Leadership, 2020 Homecoming Queen in football and was All Academic in softball and basketball and All District in softball. She is a member of First Baptist Church in McKenzie.

She plans on attending UTM with career plans to be involved in Agriscience and business in the future.

SALUTATORIAN Anna Claire Batte, daughter of Marty and Lisa Batte, is salutatorian of the class with a GPA of 4.0. She is president of the Beta Club, FBLA, and FCCLA, and Student Council secretary.

She is a member of the following clubs: Math, Spanish, Chemistry, Drama, History and C. She has been CHS Cheer Captain, attended the Governor’s School for the Humanities at UTM and Volunteer Girls’ State, was a Miss CHS nominee, and was selected as Most Likely to Succeed and Most Intellectual.

She was accepted into the University Scholars Program, and received the Chancellor’s Scholarship, Dr. David O. Patterson Scholarship and J. Fred Engel Memorial H.I.S. Scholarship. Community activities include: four year academic and athletic letter recipient, over 100 community service hours with organizations such as the Lion’s Club, Eastern Star, Salvation Army, and Northwest Tennessee Economic Development Council. She plans to attend UTM, achieve a major in Civil Engineering and pursue a career in the Stem field.

Noah Lee Hampton, son of Jonathan and April Hampton, ranks third in the class with a GPA of 4.0. He is a member of the Health Club, FCA, Student Council, Beta Club, Math Club, Chemistry Club, Drama Club, Spanish Club and FBLA. He played football for seven years and basketball for six years.

He participated in the senior play and Beta Club activities for four years.

Honors and awards he has received include principal’s honor roll, citizenship award, and Wendy’s Heisman. He attended Carroll Co. Youth Leadership and was invited to attend Governor’s School. He attends Oak Grove Baptist Church.

He plans to attend Paris TCAT to study industrial maintenance. After he graduates from TCAT, he wants to start his career in Industrial Maintenance working with someone. After gaining experience, he wants to eventually work on his own, wiring houses and doing various work. In addition, he may do something other than following a profession. He plans to follow his calling to preach God’s gospel as he has been chosen to take part in.

Candice Maria McMackins, daughter of Mark and Dawn McMackins, ranks number four in the class with a 4.0 GPA. She served as Beta Club secretary and is a member of the following clubs: Math, History, Chemistry and Spanish, She has served as a cheerleader. The honors she has received include being an Athletic and Academic letter recipients. She attended Carroll Co. Youth Leadership and was offered a sport for the Governor’s School program. She is a Lion’s Club Volunteer and a volunteer for the Northwest Tennessee Agencies. She plans on attending a TCAT school and becoming a cosmetologist and one day opening her own salon.

Aiden Hester, son of Tami Jackson and Steve Jackson, ranks number five with a GPA of 4.0.

During high school he has been a member of the Beta, Math, Chemistry, History, Spanish, FCA and Drama Clubs.

His activities have included the senior play, Beta Convention and writing conference. He has been on the Principal’s Honor Roll for four years and has received an Academic Letter for four years. He plans on attending UTM and becoming a Civil/Computer engineer.

Kaleb Christopher Coleman, son of Kevin and Marsha Coleman, ranks number six with a GPA of 3.97. He has been a member of FBLA, Beta, Math, Chemistry, Spanish, Drama and History Clubs. He was a football manager his freshman year and was a sophomore year Drone, was in the senior play and was involved with Beta Club activities. He enjoys hunting and fishing and giving back to the community in any way that he can. He also likes to hang out with his family. He plans to attend TCAT in Paris and become an industrial maintenance technician and enjoy what God has to offer him.

Malorie Clements-Tillman, daughter of David Tillman and Rachel Clements, ranks number seven with a GPA of 4.0.

She has been a member of Beta, History, Spanish, Chemistry, C and Drama Clubs. Her activities include playing basketball for seven years. She was football manager her senior year and during her freshman and sophomore years she served as the softball manager. She was in the senior play and assisted in packing boxes. She was an All-District basketball player and was on the Principal’s Honor Roll. She volunteered to help run the concessions stand at the ballpark and assisted in running the scoreboard at basketball tournaments. She plans on attending Jackson State Community College and then transferring to UTM and pursue a degree in business.

He has received the Academic Letter award and was on the Principal’s Honor Roll. He plans to attend TCAT in McKenzie and in the future do HVAC work or be a locomotive engineer.

Mikayla Brawner, daughter of David Brawner and Denise Brawner, ranks eighth with a GPA of 3.9. She is a member of the Beta, C, History, Math, Chemistry and Spanish Clubs.

She has been a member of the basketball and softball teams. She has been an Athletic and Academic Letter recipient. She plans on attending TCAT Paris in the spring of 2022. She is undecided about her future plans.

Sophie Alexis Bratton, daughter of Rich Bratton and Jenny Bratton, ranks tenth in the class with a 3.77 GPA. She was in the History, Spanish, C, Chemistry, Beta and Drama Clubs. She was a member of the basketball team for seven years and was the softball manager in the ninth and tenth grades. She was in the senior play, senior fundraisers and helped pack boxes. During her four years in high school, she was a member of the Principal’s Honor Roll and was a four-year Academic Letter recipient. She has worked at Block City Pizza and has volunteered to help with concessions at local basketball and softball events. She plans to attend Jackson State Community College and become a Physical Therapy assistant.

I will keep this speech brief as I know many of you are ready to go home and get on with the next stage of your lives.

First thing, I would like to say thank you. Thank you to all the administrators, teachers, parents, and whoever else helped us during the past four years. You all were crucial for our development over the past four years and we would like to thank you.

Now thanks to McKenzie High School in and of itself. While it isn’t perfect, it is probably one of the best public schools that one can attend. This school, despite being small, has some of the best academic and athletic opportunities that a student can wish for. We have national winning BETA and DECA clubs, as well as sports teams that advance in the TSSAA tournament year after year.

Now onto my fellow seniors. You’re about to approach the next stage of your

life and I want to leave you with one bit of advice. While you may not remember mine, Lyndsey’s, or Kennedy’s speeches in 20 years, I want you to remember what I am about to tell you. No matter what you are doing, very little in life will be handed to you. Most of your success will come as a result of your hard work and actions. Later on in life, many of you won’t have me or people like me to help with your college homework or work projects. You will find that you will be solely responsible for many things that you will have to do.

After we go our separate ways, it is likely that we will not see each other for a while. Friendships will fade away as you make new ones and we will have to decide who we will keep in contact with. As for me, I will see most of you at project graduation.

SALUTATORIAN – Lyndsey Summers

McKenzie High School will always have a special place in my heart, and so will all of you. I remember getting ready for my first day of high school as a freshman and asking my sister everything there was to know about this school – I even made her draw me a diagram of the building so that I wouldn’t get lost. I was terrified. Even now, as I speak to you today, I’m terrified of what all is to come.

There is a quote from the series finale of The Office that I have always thought applied to this school, the staff, and all of the students. “No matter how you get there, or where you end up, human beings have this miraculous gift of making that place home.” Although I was terrified to no end of attending this school, you all, in one way or another, eased my tension just by being here. After these four years, McKenzie High School has become a second home of mine, and you all are like my family. I care so much about each and every single one of you, even if there are some of you I haven’t spoken to in a long time.

Growing up, I was always told that our class was the one to watch out for. I don’t know if that’s just something teachers always say about their students or if they genuinely believed it, but as I look at everyone in this room today, I believe whole heartedly that every single person in here is going to make a difference one day.

Who knows, A.J. over here might find the cure for cancer and Kennedy is going to make the fuel industry do a complete 180.

None of us would doubt that, but I am absolutely positive that every single person sitting in these chairs right now has the same capacity for success. You don’t have to leave town or go to a prestigious school

to see success. I see it right here.

I mean, look at us. We’ve been a part of history (not that any of us chose to be), and we have survived. We have endured online school and those annoying masks.

We have had to totally reorganize our lifestyles for the sake of the coronavirus, but we all still made it out on top. That is a success story right there, and I’ll never get over how proud I am of all of us for sticking it out and still making the most of high school while we could.

As Kennedy said, it feels like yesterday we were walking into this school for the first time, baby faced and nervous. I remember being scolded for walking out of school at the 3:00 bell instead of the 3:05 on the first day and being terrified. I remember seeing all of the new kids find their new places and thrive in this school.

It’s hard to believe we went to school for nine years without Chase Webb, Savannah Nesbitt, Matheu Eis, and Nathaniel Evans. It feels like yesterday, but it feels like forever too. We had some of our time taken away from each other through the big quarantine, and that will always be one of the saddest things in my opinion.

But here we are, stronger than ever, ready to see where life may take us in the future.

The future is ours. It is scary, but it is ours. I can’t wait to see everything we achieve in the next few years, and, even more than that, I can’t wait to see you all at our first reunion and hear all of your wonderful stories. The Class of 2021 will forever be the class to watch out for, because here we are despite nature itself holding us back. Nothing can stop us now but ourselves. I love you all; you’re my family. Now, let’s graduate.

76 turn tassels at McKenzie High School McKenzie High School turned out a crop of 76 graduates during May 16 commencement ceremonies in the school gymnasium.

The traditional graduation march, Pomp and Circumstance, was played as graduating seniors filed into the gym and took their places.

Salutatorian Lyndsey Summers led the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance, and senior Savannah Nesbitt sang the national anthem.

Senior Class President Kennedy Green delivered the welcome address, and then

MHS Principal Kelly Spivey thanked Director of Schools Lynn Watkins, MHS Guidance Counselor Sheila Ridley, school staff, and Board of Education members for all they have done to make graduation possible. Spivey also thanked senior parents and asked them to stand for applause.

Seniors graduating with various honors and distinctions were recognized, as well as those that have served in various clubs, provided community service, and are en-

tering military service.

Spivey pointed out that, altogether, the Class of 2021 has been awarded close to $3 million in scholarships.

As their names were called, seniors mounted the stage to receive their diplomas and congratulatory handshakes from Watkins, Ridley and school board chairman Jon Davis.

When all had received their diplomas, the new graduates turned their tassels, sang the “Alma Mater” and then tossed their caps high before filing out of the gym to meet with friends and family.

VALEDICTORIAN GPA: 99.75 AJ is the son of Rachel Murphy and Paul Murphy, Jr. AJ is the 2021 BETA Club Parliamentarian, a member of FFA where he served on the Student Advisory Council his junior year and Vice-President his senior year. AJ is a member of DECA and he has served as the Student Council Treasurer his junior and senior years, and he is the Treasurer of the Class of 2021. AJ is a four-year member of the MHS Rebel Soccer Team. He served as Captain his senior year and he has served as the Lady Rebels Soccer Manager his junior and senior years.

AJ is a member of the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce ACT Hall of Fame. He placed third in the Tennessee Mathematics Teachers Association in Geometry and first in Algebra I. He received the HOBY Presidential Bronze Service Award, and received the STAR Green Hand award his freshmen year.

AJ plans to attend Brown University and major in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Her club memberships and service includes: BETA Club serving as secretary her junior year and vicepresident her senior year, class treasurer her freshmen and sophomores years and class secretary her junior year, DECA president, FTA president, co-editor of the Rebel Yearbook all four years, Library Club secretary her sophomore year and vice-president her senior year, Student Council secretary her senior year, Carroll County STEM participant her freshmen year, SCOPE Delegate in 2020, a RYLA participant in 2019, student representative on the MSSD School Board her senior year, Carroll County Youth Leadership Program, and volunteer at the McKenzie Health and Rehabilitation Center through the BETA Club, the Rotary Club and the US Northwest Economic Development Board. She is a member of the McKenzie Church of Christ. She plans to attend the UT Knoxville majoring in Journalism and Electronic Media.

GPA: 99.5 Lauren is the daughter of Elizabeth Mansfield and Scott Mansfield. Lauren is the BETA Club Secretary, Class of 2021 Parliamentarian, a member of DECA and a member of Student Council.

Lauren is a four-year Academic Letterman at MHS. She volunteers at Henry County Medical Center and at the Carroll County Human Society.

Lauren is a member of First Baptist Church in McKenzie. She plans on attending UT Knoxville and major in Chemical Engineering.

GPA: 99.375 Kennedy is the daughter of Torey Green and Kendra Earnhardt. Kennedy is the Class President for the Class of 2021. She is also a member of the BETA Club, DECA and a Student Council Representative. Kennedy is a member of the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce ACT Hall of Fame, and a Distinguished Scholar. Kennedy is a member of Long Heights Baptist Church where is helps with Vacation Bible School and their food drives. Kennedy plans to attend the University of Kentucky and major in Chemical Engineering. Her dream is to work in a pharmaceuticals company or the oil industry.

GPA: 98.54 Allie is the daughter of Brad and Christie Chappell. She is the Vice President of the Class of 2021, a member of the BETA Club, DECA, MClub, FCA, Teen Health Council, and a Student Council Representative.

She is a four-year member of MHS Soccer TeamAll District four years, District Offensive MVP 2021, Offensive Player of the Year three years, Jackson Sun All West TN First Team, and four State Tournament appearances. She is a fouryear member of Track Team with one State Meet appearance. She is a three-year Basketball Manager and received the Andy Camp Sportsmanship Award 2021 and District All-Academic Team. She is Miss MHS, Football Homecoming Queen 2019, Girls State Representative, and a Rotary Scholarship Winner 2021. She attends First Cumberland Presbyterian Church and is a member of Younglife and Carroll County Youth Leadership 2021. She is a McKenzie City Soccer League coach, and plans to attend Bethel University to play soccer, majoring in Education and Sports Management.

GPA: 98.41 Olivia is the daughter of David and Elyse Henderson. Olivia is the President of the Library Club, Vice-President of FTA and a member of the BETA Club. Olivia placed fifth in the Portfolio BETA Competition in 2019 and placed second in 2020. She also placed second in the BETA Quiz Bowl in 2020. Olivia is a member of the 2021 Carroll County Hall of Fame.

Olivia works at Chickfil-A and is a member of Long Heights Baptist church where she plays bass in the Worship Band. Olivia plans to attend the University of Tennessee at Knoxville to major in Anthropology.

GPA: 98.20 Claire is the daughter of Keith and Andrea Cottrill. She is a three-year member of the BETA Club and a six year member of the McKenzie Rebel Marching Band where she serves as President this year. In 2019 Claire placed fifth in the Portfolio at the BETA Club State Competition and placed second in 2021. Clare has been selected as a member of the UT Martin Honor Band for four consecutive years. Claire is a member of Long Heights Baptist church where she plays the piano and helps with the Children’s Ministry.

Claire plans to attend the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and major in Architecture.

GPA: 98.08 Will is the son of Chuck Latimer and Jan Latimer. He is a member of the BETA Club and the McKenzie Maniacs.

This year he serves as the Student Council Class Representative. Will is a four-year member of the Rebel Football team and a three year letterman.

He has also received the David Long Academic Football Award, voted Best Defensive Back and he has made the AllRegion Team. Will is a member of First Baptist Church where he volunteers with Basic Basketball and has served on the Cincinnati Mission team for three years.

Will plans to attend the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and major in Electrical Engineering.

On behalf of the graduating class of 2021, I would like to welcome our family, friends, and faculty and staff to our commencement ceremonies. Those are some big words from a small girl. I think what I really mean is, “Hey, y’all! Thanks for coming out tonight!” I would like to give a huge shout out to everyone who sacrificed anything to help us be here tonight.

Whether you are family or a teacher, we appreciate it. I know that my grandmother has spent hours sitting in the parking lot waiting for me to get out of band practice. I know I have driven her crazy over the past four years. I’m so sorry Grandpa, and I love you Grandma!

To my classmates, Guys, we finally made it! Out of our class, 15 of us have been together since pre-K. In those 14 years, we have fought over crayons, survived horrible nicknames, made it through Mr. Cox’s boring lectures, remained monotone at most school pep rallies, and, to the dismay of our teachers, successfully pulled off our senior skip day.

Wade and I somehow survived Pre-Cal and proved that fysics is phake. Wade, I have had almost every class with you this year. You have proven to be a true friend, and I will miss you next year. In the past 14 years, I have learned a few lessons that I would like to share with you all.

Second, a wise man once told me, “Never let them win.” The older I’ve gotten, the more I’ve seen the truth in his words. In life, people will always try to bring you down. I knew this is easier said than done, but don’t let them. Know your worth. Every single person in this room is capable of greatness. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. You have no control over who tells

your story, so pick up the pen and write it yourself. You are the one thing in life you can control. Don’t let anyone tell you who you are or what you can accomplish.

Someone else has always told me to go far, far away. I encourage you to do the same. The world is a lot of bigger than Carroll County, Tennessee. Go experience life and travel as much as you can.

Life may be long, but it goes by fast. Take some time and enjoy all the little things.

Some day, you will see that they are the big things. We are lucky enough to have both of the men who told me to go on an adventure and taught me how to be brave here today. They have guided my life as my band directors. Mr. Randy and Mr. Nelson, I love you both so much. You have created a second family for me. Thanks for helping guide me through this chapter of life.

The final piece of advice I have is from my grandfather. No matter how far away you go, never forget where you came from.

After a while, come back home and make our community even better. We are from West Carroll, and we should be proud of that. We are lucky enough to come from a small town where our teachers actually care about us and we all know everyone’s name. I know that even within our school, we don’t give ourselves enough credit. We can do anything we set our minds to. We all have become outstanding young men and women because of where we are from.

I couldn’t ask for a better group of people to grow up with. In the past year alone, we have proven how strong we truly are.

Now, it is our time to show the rest of the world.

Good evening, welcome family and friends, W.C. staff, and elected board members and thank you all for joining us to celebrate this wonderful occasion. Each and every one of you has played a part in helping us reach this day and we thank you.

When I was about 4 years old I told my mom, “When I grow up I wanna be a doctor, a wrestler, a boxer, and a superhero.” I guess you could say I was ambitious child.

At that age, our imaginations run wild and we’re not afraid to dream big.

When I look back over my years at West Carroll, I have many memories of fun times and lessons learned. There were homecomings and ball games, play-

grounds and field days. We learned math and science, reading and English, and we also learned not to touch the duck eggs at the Discovery Park.

Another big part of my experience here has been basketball. I have learned many lessons in my time on the court, one of those being failure is unavoidable. Yes, there will be times when you win but also times when you lose. I have a sign in my room next to a basketball that says, “You miss all the shots you don’t take.”

So let me encourage you, class of 2021, as we leave here and venture out: Cherish the memories, and no you can’t win them all, but dream big and don’t be afraid to shoot.

WC graduates 68 on football field For the second year in a row, West Carroll High School conducted graduation ceremonies on the football field rather than the school gymnasium, where it had been held for many years.

A total of 68 graduating seniors walked the line in this year’s commencement on May 13.

After all of the soon-to-be graduates had taken their seats, Tennessee National Guardsmen Mike Mulligan and Evan Johnson with the 890th Engineering Company of Huntingdon presented the colors and all stood as the national anthem was played.

Senior Tyler Johnson opened the commencement with prayer, and WCHS Principal Kelly Todd offered opening re-

marks.

Speeches were then given by Senior Class President Kassidy Simmons, Salutatorian Luke Moore, and Valedictorian Lillian Neel.

Todd recognized those graduating with honors and/or distinction, Assistant Principal Shane DePriest recognized those receiving ACT awards and honors, and Director of Schools Preston Caldwell recognized all the graduates, including those entering the workforce; those planning to attend a two-year or four-year college, university, or technical school; and those entering military service.

Caldwell also offered a few words of advice and inspiration.

“Your lives are what you make of it, so

go out there and make it a great one,” said Caldwell.

One by one, graduating seniors came forward to receive their diplomas and congratulations from school administrators and school board members, and as they made their way back to their seats, each senior presented a rose to parents and other attending family members.

Todd declared the Class of 2021 as official graduates, and new graduates turned their tassels to signify this transition.

New graduate Hope Lynn Coleman closed the commencement with prayer and graduates tossed their caps high before exiting the field to celebrate with family and friends.

VALEDICTORIAN This year’s valedictorian, Lillian Neel, is the daughter of Sally Thompson of McLemoresville. Lillian is a member of the West Carroll Marching War Eagles Band, the Beta Club, Creative Writing Club, and Book Lovers Club. She is a recipient of the Bethel University Presidential Honor Scholarship, the Renaissance Scholarship, and the Jace Jones Memorial Music Scholarship.

Lillian plans to attend Bethel University and major in English with a minor in secondary education.

SALUTATORIAN This year’s salutatorian, Luke Moore, is the son of Natt and Kristie Moore of Atwood. Luke is a member of the Beta Club, Student Council, FBLA, Science Club, and the War Eagles basketball, golf, and crosscountry teams. Some of Luke’s achievements and awards at WCHS include: being the first WCHS participant in the state cross-country meet, earning first and second place awards in FBLA regional political science competitions; ACT Wall of Fame honors; All-District 11A Team, District 11A All-Tournament Team MVP, Region 6A All-Tournament Team, All-West TN Team and All-Academic Team, district and region championships, and a state tournament appearance in basketball. Luke is a recipient of the West Carroll Rebounders Club/Janice A. McClain Scholarship, UT Martin Chancellor Scholarship, and the Elam Alumni Legacy Scholarship. He plans to attend UT Martin and major in electrical engineering.

Wade Smith is the son of Albert Wade Smith of Atwood. He is a HOSA (Future Health Professionals), Student Council, Beta Club, yearbook staff, the War Eagle cross-country team, and the Science Club. A recipient of the Vanderbilt University Opportunity Scholarship, Wade plans to attend Vanderbilt in the fall and major in medicine, health and society.

Trey Browning is the son of Ricky Browning and Andrea Browning of Trezevant. He is a member of FBLA, Beta Club, a War Eagles basketball team manager, and a member of the War Eagles baseball and golf teams. Trey is a recipient of the UT Martin Dean’s Scholarship, and he plans to attend UT Martin in the fall and major in finance and accounting.

Kaleigh Wilson is the daughter of Gregory and Carrie Wilson of Trezevant. Kaleigh is the yearbook editor and a member of FBLA, Beta Club, and Science Club.

Alyssa Kerby is the daughter of Dayna Anderson of Cedar Grove. She is a member of HOSA (Future Health Professionals), Beta Club, Career and Community Leaders of America, Spirit Club, National Honors Society, and National Society of High School Scholars, as well as a member of the WCHS cheerleading squad, Lady War Eagles softball team, and the WCHS cross-country team. She plans to attend the Tennessee College of Technology (TCAT) in McKenzie and study welding.

Gabriel York is the son of Ben York and Silvia York of Cedar Grove. He is a member of the WCHS cross county team, Future Business Leaders of America, and president of the Book Lovers Club. Gabriel placed second in the FBLA’s regional computer technology competition. As of graduation time, he was undecided about his future educational and/ or career plans.

Jaycan Martin is the son of Jason and Daralyn Martin of McLemoresville. He is a member of the Beta Club, FFA, Fire & Safety Team, West Carroll Marching War Eagles Band, and the War Eagles crosscountry team. Jaycan is a recipient of the Jay’s Warriors Scholarship, Newman and Dorothy Walpole Scholarship, Bethel Renaissance Scholarship, and Trustee Honor Scholarship. Today is the day that the class of 2021 gathers to graduate. This is a proud moment for all of us - we have moved successfully through our four-year journey and are now awaiting the next exciting step.

I am deeply honored to stand before you today to express my appreciation to everyone that has helped us grow in this journey and those who supported our learning.

To begin, I’d like to thank my parents for raising me to be persistent regardless of the odds against me. I want to thank my mom first for teaching me to love myself when things got rough, and next, I want to thank my dad for teaching me wisdom and patience.

Thank you to our dedicated teachers for their passionate teaching, encouragement, and advice and the administrative staff for keeping us grounded. Ms. Malone and Mr. Collins have always gone out of their way to make things work for our class, and we will always be grateful for their efforts. Ms. Stokes has also gone out of her way to teach us life lessons and how we can be better people.

Lastly, I’d like to thank my classmates for supporting me and pushing me beyond my limits, including my nerves. (Love you guys.) I’d also like to acknowledge and thank Ms. Tina for making sure that everything was together and organized for us at all times. The class of 2021 will never forget these kind and caring individuals who prioritized us and gently pushed us to constantly be better individuals.

I’ll never forget that quite specific incident when someone sprayed pepper spray and we had to evacuate Ms. Stokes’s room. It seems that we’ll never know who did it.

Our class, school, and community have lost three golden souls in our last year. Today, I feel that Emily Peterson,

Ms. Marian Jones, and Ms. Rhonda Reed have come to celebrate this momentous occasion with us. These losses have impacted us heavily. Emily’s light, Ms. Jones’s quirky personality, and Ms. Rhonda’s sweet smile and gentle care for others will be sorely missed. I am so grateful for the impact they had on our lives.

We’ve come to the end of this stage of our lives, having survived everything from late-night papers, after-school jobs, and personal finance. We’ve worked together, grown together, and mourned together. We’ve seen a lot in these four years, and we’ve come together when our situation became tense. Through it all, we persevered, and we’ve strengthened our voices and our drive.

Going forward, we know there will be difficulties. We know there will be obstacles to overcome. But we also know that there will be adventures, and we’re ready to step out and take our place in the world.

To my classmates, go forth and forge your paths to success. We may stumble and even fall, but we will always pick ourselves back up. And if we ever see someone struggling, let us be kind and help them get back on their feet. We always have.

I am so proud of you all for making it here with me today despite the difficulties with loss and a pandemic. We’ve all fought silent battles, and the outcome of those is why we are here today. I can’t wait to see our generation change the world for the best.

Before I step down, I would like to leave a quote with you from Ralph Waldo Emerson: “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”

It is my honor to welcome family, friends, faculty and staff to the class of 2021’s graduation ceremony. I believe I can speak on behalf of my class when I say “thank you” for being here.

Personally, I want to begin tonight by expressing my thanks and gratitude to everyone who has helped and supported me throughout my high school journey.

You have shaped me into the person I am today. First and foremost, I would like to give my thanks to God. He has walked along my side every step of the way, and I would not be here today without Him. Secondly, I would like to thank my parents for always loving me unconditionally and having my back. My mom has always told me to give 110% in everything I do, and that advice has gotten me to this spot tonight. I also want to thank all of my family members for loving me and being there for me. Also, shout out to my friends for support, encouragement, and endless laughs. Last but not least, I want to thank my teachers for giving me a great educational experience. Thank you all for pushing me to be my best in the classroom and always encouraging me in everything I do.

Wow. When people tell you time flies, they really do mean it. It seems just like yesterday we stepped into the building as kindergartners, and tonight we will leave here as Clarksburg alumni.

To the underclassmen anticipating their senior year, please remember, do not take anything for granted. Do not wish your life away, because before you know it, you

all will be sitting here in this position. Yes, it is exciting, but it is also scary and a little sad, so enjoy the moments you have left here at Clarksburg School because it will be over soon.

This year has been nothing short of crazy. The pandemic has changed our lives tremendously. We all have tried to get used to the new “normal”. We have been through quarantine, social distancing, germ-xing our hands every five minutes, and wearing a mask. I have personally been quarantined four times this past year, and let me tell you, it is not fun. This year, everyone has missed something.

Whether it be a basketball game, cheerleading on the side, or even just sitting in a class with friends, we have all missed something. As we go forward from here, let’s not miss the important things.

To the class of 2021, I would like to remind you of a lyric from our class song, “Be the Light:” “In a race you can’t win, slow it down.” This verse means to slow down and enjoy the important and often simple things in life. Spend time with your family and friends. Smile and laugh every chance you get; learn and grow and improve. Go look at a sunset. Take that picture because memories are priceless, and you never know when it can all change. This year has certainly taught us that.

I pray for each and every one of you that God always blesses you. My fellow graduates, you all will forever hold a special place in my heart. Thank you.

26 receive diplomas at Clarksburg High Clarksburg High School conducted graduation exercises on May 14 in the school gymnasium, handing out diplomas to 26 graduating seniors.

The expectant seniors filed into the gym to “Pomp and Circumstance” as attending family, friends, and school staff stood in respect and recognition of these young people’s accomplishments.

Principal Lori Leasure welcomed all those in attendance, and then the lights were lowered for a senior tribute video and musical presentation prepared by Kellie Birdwell and Tonya Malone.

Class Historian Emily Reeves, Saluta-

torian Sarah Derryberry, and Valedictorian Perfect Lor all delivered their respective speeches.

Local awards and scholarships were presented to chosen seniors by representatives of the business community and civic organizations.

Reeves was awarded the Clarksburg High School Student of the Year Award.

Those graduating with various distinctions and honors were also recognized.

One by one, graduating seniors were called forward to receive their diplomas and congratulations from school board members and school administrators.

A diploma was also presented in memory of senior Emily Cary Peterson, daughter of Steven and Michelle Peterson, who was killed in tragic vehicle accident back in October of last year. Emily’s father and her niece, two-year-old Austin Ivy Parish, came forward to accept the diploma.

Graduating seniors were then given the opportunity to present roses to parents and other family members.

Members of the Class of 2021 were declared as graduates, tassels were turned, and caps were tossed in celebration.

She has been a member of the Lady Rockets Basketball team for four years earning All-Region, All-District, All-Academic, and the Lady Rocket Award, and Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year for Clarksburg presented by the Carroll County Sports Hall of Fame. She participated on the Lady Rockets Cross Country team and qualified individually twice for state competition. In the fall, Sarah, who received numerous scholarships and awards, currently plans to attend the University of Tennessee at Martin and major in Exercise Science.

Emily Shea Reeves is the daughter of Ricky and Pam Reeves. She is graduating as a Rocket Scholar, with State Distinction. She earned the Tri-Star Award, TN Scholar, TN Service Award, the Beta Award, JTG Award, Yearbook Award, Student of the Year Award, and AllA Honor Roll. She has participated in several extra-curricular activities including: Beta Club, four years; Carroll County Teen Health Council, six years; Skills USA; Jobs for Tennessee Graduates (JTG); treasurer of the student council, and a member of the yearbook staff.

She served as class president and participated in Carroll County Youth Leadership her senior year. Emily has also played softball for five years and was awarded the Lady Rocket Award.

In addition, Emily is Miss CHS 2021 and the 2020 Governor's Star Volunteer Award Honoree. In the fall, Emily, who received numerous scholarships and awards, plans to attend college and major in Nursing.

Myles Abram Rogers is the son of Vernon and Tamie Rogers. He is graduating as a Rocket Scholar, with State Distinction, and he earned the Tri-Star Award, TN Scholar, TN Service Award, and Beta Award. He has maintained all A’s all four years as a member of the Beta Club keeping a 4.0 GPA each semester.

He has been a member of FFA for four years, captain of the basketball team, a member of Carroll County Youth Leadership, and was voted most likely to succeed by his classmates.

Myles played golf for four years and placed second individual golfer at district. In basketball, he was awarded Rookie of the Year, Best Defensive player, Clarksburg Male Athlete of the Year, and Carroll County Sports Hall of Fame Outstanding Male Athlete. Myles’s scholarships include the TN Hope Lottery Scholarship, TN Promise Scholarship, Wildersville-Beaver Ruritan Scholarship, Clarksburg High School Alumni Service Award, Stokes Surveying Scholarship, and UT Martin Excellence Award. In the fall, Myles plans to attend University of Tennessee at Martin and major in exercise science.

Samantha Kae Roney is the daughter of Jeff Roney and Linda Roney. She is graduating as a Rocket Scholar, with State Distinction, and she earned the TriStar Award, TN Scholar, TN Service Award, State FFA Degree, and Beta Award. Her awards also include the Theater Award, Outstanding Speaker Award, and All-Academic Team Award. She has been a member of the Beta Club and FFA for four years, a member of the Student Council for three years, a member of Art Club for two years, and member of Yearbook for three years.

She has served as the Vice President of FFA her senior year and the Vice President of her senior class. In addition, Samantha has participated in basketball for seven years, softball for five years, cross country for four years, and scholastic shooting for three years. She even received Athlete of the Year her senior year. Samantha’s scholarships include the TN Hope Lottery Scholarship, TN Promise Scholarship, Emily Peterson Memorial Scholarship, and First Bank Scholarship. In the fall, Samantha plans to attend the University of Tennessee at Martin and major in dietetics.

Michael James Schaffer is the son of Mike and Jackie Schaffer. He is graduating as a Rocket Scholar, with State Distinction, and received the Tri-Star Award. He has been a member of the Beta Club, FFA, and a manager for the basketball team. He attended TCAT McKenzie during the spring semester with the assistance of the dual enrollment grant to jumpstart his training in Machine Tool Technology. Michael will continue his education at TCAT of McKenzie after graduation. His scholarships include TN Promise and the Wilder-Neifer Scholarship.

Danica Rose Follett is the daughter of Dale and Elizabeth Follett.

She is graduating as a Rocket Scholar, with State Distinction. She earned a State FFA Degree and received the Tri-Star Award. She has been a member of FFA for four years, a member of FBLA for four years, and a class officer for one year. Her scholarships include TN Promise and the TN Hope Lottery Scholarship. In the fall, Danica plans to attend Austin Peay State University to study Criminal Justice.

Nathan Michael Junior Yewell is the son of Eric and Alicia Yewell. He has earned the Rocket Scholars Award, was a member of the FFA for two years and played basketball. He attended TCAT McKenzie during the spring semester with the assistance of the dual enrollment grant to jumpstart his training in Welding Technology.

Nathan will continue his education at TCAT of McKenzie after graduation. His scholarships include TN Promise and the Wilder-Neifer Scholarship.

Ethan Kemp Lindsey is the son of Eric and Claudine Lindsey.

Ethan has earned the Rocket Scholar Award, was a member of FFA for several years and played baseball. Ethan has been enrolled in TCAT in McKenzie since January 2021. He is currently working towards a certification degree in Information Technology System Management Degree.

Ethan will receive the TN Promise Scholarship and Wilder-Neifer Scholarship.

Dawson Riley Marlin is the son of David and Dawn Marlin. He has attended TCAT McKenzie during the spring semester to get an early start in the Information Technology System Management Degree Certification. He has received the TN Promise Scholarship and the Wilder-Neifer Scholarship. He plans to continue his education at TCAT McKenzie.

One receives diploma, two honored as program graduates at Carroll Academy Students, staff, and visiting family members gathered in the hallway at Carroll Academy on May 14 as one senior student received his high school diploma and two students were honored as program graduates.

Receiving his diploma from West Carroll High School through Carroll Academy was Creadon Clear Waters Hays, 17, son of Lisa Hays and Ricky Hays of

Trezevant.

Coreyuna Norment, 13, from Lexington Middle School and Romyia Hart, 13, from West Carroll Junior High were both awarded with certificates showing they have completed the program at Carroll Academy.

Coreyuna is the daughter of Courtney Norment and the step-daughter of Velda Norment.

Romyia is the daughter of Stacy Hart.

Carroll Academy Principal DeAnn Spellings and Director of Mental Health John Roberts praised Creadon, Coreyuna, and Romyia for how far they have come and encouraged them to stay on a positive path in the future.

“This is a great day,” said Roberts.

“Now go do great things.”
