chool’s out for summer! How many of my teacher friends sang that lyric?

I hope everyone gets the chance to do something fun this year, especially since we are seeing more and more “normalcy” every day. I also hope everyone is still doing their best to be safe and be respective of others.

In this month’s Avenues we’ve taken a few pages to celebrate a “battle of the border” between Fulton and Izard county high schools, Viola and ICC, as they faced off in the state championship baseball game. By the time you are reading this, the winner of that game has been announced. We are proud of our local teams, especially given they didn’t have baseball seasons last year.

Our home tour this month features Bryan and Dawn Snow, of Myrtle, Mo. Though the inside of their house wasn’t quite ready for Avenues, there is so much to their story, we are doing it in two parts!

The reason for their move was very interesting, and as a Myrtle resident myself, found it very unique for their specific reason for choosing our small community.

Renee visited with an individual who is very well-liked and respected in our entire coverage area. Neil and Jill McWilliams are the ones who brought Spring Dipper Ice Cream to the area and are about to make some big changes, but don’t worry, luckily a local family, Ken and Amy McKenzie, have plans to keep the tradition going.

The Butler Children’s Park in West Plains recently made some improvements which included adding a splash pad. It is a unique feature that is new to the area and just in time for the hot summer months.

We’ve also included information about an upcoming hot air balloon festival going to be held in Ozark, Mo. As events and festivals start planning for their return in 2021, please contact Avenues and let us feature your upcoming event!

W

hen people talk about escaping city lights to enjoy a night in the country under the stars, not everyone is eager to make it a permanent escape. For an astronomer and outdoor lover, Myrtle, Mo. was the perfect move from their San Antonio, Texas life.

Bryan and Dawn Snow searched several states for properties in the country away from lights before they consulted an interesting website which locates the darkest skies for stargazing lovers. “It takes a Google map of the whole

world and it overlays that with the illumination maps from the cities. Myrtle, Mo. happens to be what is called a Bortle 2,” they explained. The Bortle scale is a nine-level numeric scale that measures the night sky’s brightness of a particular location. The lower the number, the darker the sky.

They bought their 60-acre (“give or take”) farm in 2016 and began building in 2017. While their home was being built, they resided on the property in an RV. Also during the construction of their home, Bryan was working on a construction project of his own … his observatory.

Though the home building process is complete, the couple is still working on finishing touches inside, with one of their most recent completed projects being the home’s library, which will definitely be worth the wait to see when the interior is all complete. Handcrafted rich wood cabinets with matching wainscoting, designed and installed by the talented John Wilson, gives the room a distinguished and polished look. The library houses many of Bryan’s favorite astronomy resources, most of which coincide with his construction project.

“I have a tendency to

overbuild things,” said Bryan, as he proudly discussed the building process of the observatory. To many, the structure might just look like a unique shed in the middle of a field by itself. He chose the building site he thought would give him perfect views of the sky and opportunities for amazing photos using the telescope installed in the observatory. It is 16 feet across and was constructed using 2x6 boards.

The telescope mount points to the north, as it must be

aligned on the North Star as everything rotates around it. In order to see something in other directions, the top half of the observatory opens up in sections and also rotates. There is also a full slit in the roof of the structure that opens for views as well.

He uses chains, latches and turn buckles to keep the structure secure from damage in high winds and heavy rains.

side, along with a solar telescope so he can capture images of the sun.

Having the observatory literally in his backyard is a dream come true for the astronomer. When he lived in San Antonio, he would have to travel to the country with his telescopes. He recalled one instance when he was traveling home at night and nearly fell asleep at the wheel. That is when the conversa-

tion about moving somewhere “dark” became serious.

Bryan graduated from Pan American University (now a part of the University of Texas) with an astro-science degree and became an astronomy educator. He ended up running the San Antonio College Planetarium for approximately 30 years, so when it came time for him to retire, “our big dream was to always find a dark place so he could build an obser-

vatory. Because frankly the question isn’t, to an astronomer, ‘do you have a telescope?’ it’s ‘how many telescopes do you have?’ so he always wanted the observatory,” added Dawn.

The desert is ideal for viewing the night skies, but after living in the Texas heat for so many years, they were not interested in a desert move, especially due to Dawn’s desire to continue gardening.

Dawn has always loved to garden and see things grow, so moving from Texas to Missouri, she has been very impressed with how quick it is to see the fruits of her labor.

Next to her garden sits two beehives, a hobby she prepared for prior to the couple’s move to Missouri.

“I took a couple courses [on bee-keeping] in Texas. I thought, ‘you know, I’m going to want to do something. I’m not going to be content just to be a housewife,” said Dawn. The couple hadn’t even bought their RV yet or put their home in Texas on the market, but she saw the information about the classes and knew she wanted to learn more. “I knew I didn’t want to do bees in San Antonio because of the Africanized bee problem they had,” she explained.

Once they made the move to Missouri, she began getting involved with local bee-keepers and attended her first meeting in Mammoth Spring.

She plants bee-friendly vegetation and also participated in “no mow May” for the bees.

decisions about what to do with issues that arise on their property are changes these “city folk” welcomed.

For example, an area of the yard holds water when it rains, “It is really pretty, but we’ve thought about sealing over to make a permanent pond,” but Bryan is curious to know what is below the area, thinking there could be a karst (collapsed cave). Though that would be a unique discovery, it could

potentially be dangerous for their house. “I can watch it [standing water] and see the bubbles come up as it gurgles down,” said Dawn. She does wish she would have had more information about “area” specific items like not being able to store paint outside during the winter months, gardening tips and other landowner advice.

She plants vegetables, fruits and plants all alike, a hobby

she began in Texas. “Growing is completely different here.

The first year I moved here, and I had just started going to the Myrtle Senior Citizens Center, I was so tickled because I got my tomatoes in in February, because that is what you do in Texas. They all laughed at me and said, ‘oh, you city girl’ and I’m going, ‘oh, please’. So I babied them and had great tomatoes that year, covered them and kept them warm.” She’s adjusted to the schedule of gardening in the Ozarks over the last couple of years.

“Everything grows in Texas too, but everything here grows exponentially more. Down there, we maybe mowed barely

once a week, maybe every 10 to 15 days and this is six days,” she said. She has one brand new garden area she started last fall that has sprouted this spring. “That would have taken five years to grow in Texas.” She transferred some Irises to the area and they have blossomed and are almost ready to bloom.

They are still adjusting to life in the Ozarks, but after five years, and help from one new friends, they are getting the hang of things.

Avenues will be following up later this year for a “part two” with Bryan and Dawn to showcase their beautiful home.

Gardening in the Ozarks “Can we talk”…weed control…

I

f you are reading this article then you are a gardener of some sort, whether in flower beds or vegetable gardens.

Because of this enjoyment of gardening, you look for anything that will help your garden chores more enjoyable. So, let’s talk weed John Norberg control.

Sharp County Mulch is a great way to help Master Gardener keep weeds under control along with protecting the soil from getting too hot or too cold during the summer and winter.

Mulch also helps keep in the moisture your plants need.

When mulching around trees and shrubs, keep it four to six inches away from the base to prevent damage to the trunks.

There are several types of weed control one could choose from. Organic mulch is made from pine, cedar and cypress woods, along with grass clippings, shredded leaves, pine needles or even newspapers and or cardboard.

Pine mulch, either finely shredded or in nugget form, lasts longer than other tree-based mulches, because it takes longer to break down and decompose into the soil.

A downfall with the pine mulch is it is light weight and wind and rain can make it move from where you want it to be. Pine needles are also good for mulch, especially for acid loving plants. They will release Aluminum into the soil making the plants lush and green.

Cedar mulch is a good mulch for any garden that is not 18 AVENUES • June, 2021

tilled regularly, so use it in a permanent flower bed or use on walkways through the garden/woods. Cedar mulch is not a good choice for vegetable gardens. Cedar mulch adds a great aroma in your garden and sitting areas, and it also can be used as a pest deterrent.

Cypress mulch is by far the preferred mulch of most gardeners. This mulch is the by-product of pond and Bald Cypress trees. This mulch is also generally less expensive than other mulches. The double and triple shredded cypress is a great mulch that seems to “interlock” together helping it to stay in place. It also will add nutrients back into the soil as it decomposes.

Newspaper (or paper products like cardboard) can be used as an inexpensive weed barrier. These two items are good for laying down between the rows of your vegetable gardens, keeping them clear of weeds. The following year you can just rototill them into the soil, which will loosen up your clay soil.

I get asked several times a year about using colored mulch. Basically, colored mulch is made from repurposed wood products. This can include but not limited to: pallets, crates, decks, etc. Some of these items maybe treated wood. Then they dye it to the color they want. This dye color can wash off and stain your sidewalks, your hands and even your pet’s paws. If it does come from treated wood, that “treatment” will leach into the soil and potentially kill beneficial insects and bacteria and possibly the earthworms.

So, with a little extra effort at planting time, you can save yourself the agony of weeding all summer long.

Serving up entertainment at Spring Dipper

The process of developing their successful

and popular ice cream hit some bumps in the road on the way to becoming established, but created the foundation for a sweet treat that is loved by locals and attracts tourists.

With the intention of moving from Chicago to “retire” and make ice cream, they purchased the failed business from a man named Sal. It’s a purchase Neil described as a mistake that turned out to be a nice AVENUES • June, 2021 21

mistake that has even turned into a monster.

“It was successful here. It was not successful in Chicago, maybe because a lot of things done wrong, but we corrected all of those by joining an ice cream organization, which taught me a lot of things,” said Neil, who was president of the National Ice Cream Retailers Association for 2016-2017.

“It has just been building on that knowledge since then, but I have always tried to maintain the same ice cream as I did in 2004 when we bought the business in Chicago,” said Neil.

Neil recalled Sal telling him he would not sell him the business unless he joined the NICRA. “We went to this convention to find out what it’s all about so we wouldn’t make the same mistakes his son did. I joined the organization. I went to their convention in New Orleans in 2003 and we met many people who were very interested in sharing their knowledge with a newbie so they didn’t make mistakes. I learned a lot from the first three to four months. Gosh, I made a lot of mistakes, but we learned a lot from it, and we just kept moving on. One person I met at this convention, provided a package of flavors and recipes and he said here are the ingredients, here is how we suggest you do it and it became a number of flavors,” said Neil, who planned to only have eight to 12 flavors. However, today the Spring Dipper has approximately 40 to 45 flavors. Some flavors are retired, and new ones created.

To further expand their knowledge of how to create delicious ice cream, the McWilliams’ bought tickets to a week long class in Raleigh-Durham. Due to inclement weather, the class was canceled the morning it was supposed to start, which they did not know until they arrived. The instructor, who had a PhD in chemistry with a specialty in milk product pathogens was called

in, resulting in a week of one-on-one class time and what Neil calls a great learning experience. However, they were not instructed on the art of creating waffle cones during the class, which led to what Neil calls mistake number two.

After trial and error they started making cones.

“They were not crunchy. They were just bad, and it turns out the machine was broken. Since I didn’t have any training on it, I didn’t know the machine was broken. I had no idea what it was supposed to work like, but it wasn’t supposed to work like the way it was,” said Neil, who ended up calling the manufacturer about the issue.

Neil and Jill first visited the area in 1990 to see what it was like. They stopped by a local realtor, who started sending them a flyer with available places every week. Then a place became available they liked. “We started coming down here every other weekend from Chicago,” said Neil, stating they traveled the 521 miles and stayed here in their pop-up camper. “We enjoyed it here.” So much so, Neil said it became home, where he would retire and make ice cream.

“When we came down here, we knew absolutely nobody and that quickly changed as soon as I put my 24 seats here. People started coming in, not in droves because we were on the edge of town, way outside of town, almost three-quarters of a mile and people wouldn’t come that little extra distance, but they still did come,” said Neil, who attributes Spring Dipper’s success to an invitation from a “generous individual” who allowed him to serve ice cream at games. “That was the difference between success and failure here.

I was allowed to get in there, people tried the ice cream, they liked the ice cream and they made the effort to come that extra three-quarters of a mile to see if it was any different,” said Neil.

cream shop. In addition, his wife had a restaurant for five years before deciding to close it as it all became too much to handle.

Expanding the business to road events, they began offering their product at the annual Old Soldier’s Reunion, which led to Neil traveling with the carnival, Kenny’s Funland, which he is thankful for as it helped keep the business alive. Neil would go to the shop, make more ice cream and go back to the carnival location. “You do a lot of things if you are trying to make it successful,” said Neil. This experience led to acquiring a concession trailer to help bring in more money instead of the ice cream cart and umbrella they had.

During this time, Jill was running back and forth at the shop helping to keep it going. She also rescued an abandoned kitten in poor condition found in an outside flower pot that they named Dippy. “All the time the ice cream shop has been open we have had a little cat called Dippy. It’s sort of been our little mascot,” said Neil of the cat that recently passed away.

that have come along with it. “Not all operations work correctly when you start trying to take your ideas and implement them. Plans usually fail after the first step. Step number two is a modification, and it goes from that point on and we had those opportunities. I have met all sorts of people we would have never known by being in this business. Suddenly, you become a face people recognize even if you are trying to get to the bathroom and they are stopping you to talk,” said Neil, stating this happened in Jonesboro.

When asked where inspiration for unique flavors such as Blue Moon comes from, Neil stated it is not a new flavor and came out of West Virginia in 1937.

“The actual ingredients that are in it, other than Smurf, has been kept secret by the family,” said Neil.

During the summer months, the shop makes as much Blue Moon as vanilla because children love it.

“Kids didn’t want it to begin with, but when you give a two-year-old Blue Moon and they grow up, for some reason, they indoctrinate their children to Blue Moon and now I have quite the following of Blue Moon,” said Neil of the flavor that is sold in just a few places in the United States, which include Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and “one goofy place in Arkansas.”

Sometimes customers’ ideas, as well as employees’, are considered or used as inspiration.

One flavor was inspired by the encouragement of local radio DJ, Mike Crase, known for The Redbone Show on KKountry95, when he asked Neil at the Fulton County Fair about making peach ice cream.

Neil acquired the ingredients and made three peach ice creams to be taste tested at the radio station to decide what they thought was the best, resulting in Redbone Peach.

Some of the most popular flavors have resulted from accidents such as Jamoka Almond Fudge, of which 35 gallons were made accidentally without chocolate. They named it Lacka Mocha and it has became a popular flavor.

Neil is a humble man and when asked about his contributions to the community, such as being awarded Hometown Hero, he replied, “I love people acknowledging that I might have done some things that are nice. Do I go seeking them out? No. In fact, I would much rather stay behind the scenes and provide opportunities…That makes me much happier than being spotlighted,” said Neil.

Recently, Neil, who is also a master plumber in Arkansas, started a scholarship to be offered to a high school graduate to go to trade school. It will be offered at Mammoth Spring to begin with, with plans to expand it to other area schools.

When asked what he hopes people take away from his presence, Neil said, “They get good ice cream and a place where they can gather and have little parties and fun…Entertainment from me.”

Recently, he was even told by a tourist that management should pay him more. “There has been one or two times of all the time we have been here that I have not been able to get people to smile or laugh or something of that nature. I was told you need to tell management, who owns this place, to pay you more money. I asked why. He said because you are so entertaining, people will come and just watch you and I had to tell him that is just the way I am. I am just happy they hire old people,” said Neil. He stated it was part of the fun because the local people in line knew what was going on and were all snickering and entertained by it.

Part of the entertaining shenanigans at the shop includes banter between individuals including Neil and longtime employee, Robyn Sanders. For instance, she is “fired” everyday, but keeps coming back.

Now, as Neil makes more plans to “retire”, there are plans to manufacture more ice cream.

“Part of the expansion is I have to free up some of my time because now, I have to manufacture more ice cream,” said Neil, who acquired a building located on Highway 19 in Thayer to have an operating manufacturing facility. However, this has been hindered by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“By freeing up some of my time here, in Mammoth Spring, I will be able to spend more time up there making ice cream,” said Neil, stating he will have to probably work harder at being “retired.”

“If I am going to be retired, I might as well work hard because there is no rocking chair in my future, but that is my expansion at this time,” said Neil. There were plans to open a Spring Dipper in Mountain Home but also has been hindered by the pandemic.

In the near future there will be a few new faces at the ice cream shop with Ken and Amy McKenzie purchasing it and taking over mid to late June.

“As far as any initial plans, we don’t really have any other than trying to learn what we are doing because we know nothing about ice cream other than it tastes

really good and Spring Dipper is the best we have had,” said Ken McKenzie.

Amy has already tried her hand at making waffle cones and Ken has gotten to scoop ice cream for a customer.

McKenzie stated the immediate plan is to learn about the business. “We know that Neil runs a successful business here. He provides a product that is quality that the communities around here love as well as people outside the community. If I have learned one thing through life, if something works don’t mess it up. Just continue what you are doing and if you can put little touches on it to kind of improve the process or something like that, you may want to do that.

For the most part, he has a good product, customers enjoy visiting here and we want to continue that tradition,” said McKenzie, stating that some eventual changes will include focusing on outside events and catering, etc.

Neil has not been able attend additional events in the last two years due to the pandemic.

McKenzie loved the Spring Dipper ever since he began visiting the business for more than eight years.

“From the first time I stepped in, I loved it. So, I have been making little offhanded comments and we never spoke about anything, we would just kind

of laugh it off and that would be it. Approximately a month ago, he contacted me while I was out of town and we started seriously talking about things,” said McKenzie, stating they have come up with a mutual agreement they are all happy with.

“This actually stemmed from an offhanded comment and that was it,” said McKenzie.

Neil will not be totally abandoning the business as he will still be active with it as will employee Robyn Sanders.

McKenzie stated Neil has also assured him that he will do what he can to help insure they succeed with the business.

“It has a good business model, it has a name that is known, it has a great product. With his expertise and mentoring, I expect to be successful,” said McKenzie, stating even though Neil will be at the business sporadically, and maybe not everyday, it will still be the same Spring Dipper Ice Cream and same great service.

“Nothing is is really changing other than a few faces,” said McKenzie.

Neil said part of the negotiation was that it would stay the same and the knowledge of making the ice cream will also be passed on to the McKenzie’s.

Beginning to Fish By Dewayne French One common question I get asked by parents is, I want to get involved in fishing or how can I get my child into fishing? Various reasons exist, but most want to get them or their child away from the “inside distractions of life”.

Some have never cast a rod and reel and they do not know how to start. If you’re just starting out here are a few things you need to put into your first tackle box that are basic and fundamental things you will need. There is a starting point just like in any other sport, all sports have fundamentals.

The first thing you will need depending on your age or your child’s age is a fishing license for the state you will be fishing in. That could be a resident or non-resident depending on where you live and your age.

Every state conservation agency has a website and multiple ways of accessing them for that information. Staying legal should always be the first step. Many for them have public fishing maps, fishing reports, and even how to items on their website to help get you and your family started.

Just getting into fishing can be mind boggling to say the least and then add in the expense, it is often way more than a parent

first perceives. The cost can be spread out of the course of the year and you don’t have to buy the most expensive tackle to get started. As a parent when getting started in any sport we all want the best for our kids or at least better than what we had growing up. But there is a limit to how much is too much to spend. Children change their minds weekly and even daily on life and sports are no different.

You can buy the most expensive equipment out on the market and then next month they change to another sport. As you get started building a tackle box for you or your child, always start out slow and build on it monthly or every couple of months as money will allow, just add a little to the tackle box as you can afford to and before you know you will have a well-stocked and manageable box of fishing tackle.

The first item besides you license is deciding if you want a spinning rod/reel or a bait casting rod/reel setup. Most anglers will have a couple of each to get started. I always tell it to parent like this, a car mechanic that works on your car will have many tools to do the job, as opposed to just a pair of pliers and a crescent wrench. Each rod/reel combo will have a specific job it is made for and you can also have a few that are usable in multiple applications. So after you get a couple of rod/reel combos and get comfortable casting them, you’re ready to get stated with the tackle box itself or in today’s terminology a tackle bag. Your

grandads old tackle box has been replaced by an actual bag. A bag that holds clear plastic trays that you can put a variety of lures and terminal tackle into. Most of these bags hold 4 large size clear boxes that have dividers in them to put your tackle in and maximize space. The bag itself has many zippered compartments on the outside to place bags of baits in or extra reels, line, sunscreen or even map pockets on some. A good starting point is 50-80 dollars for a large bag or 20-30 for the smaller sized bags that hold the smaller clear trays.

Let’s start out with the large tackle bag, the one with 4 trays and work form that as our startup point. I would label the boxes 1-terminal tackle (hooks, sinkers) 2-crankbaits, top water 3-spinner/ buzz bait, 4-plastic lures/jigs. This is just a start and my change based on what you a fishing for.

You will need some fishing line for your rod/reel combos, some line cutters/clippers, needle nose pliers, and a first aid kit for small cuts scrapes you may get.

Very few items can cross over and that is why the tackle stores are full of different tackle items. Start out slow and grow over time is my best advice and don’t go “overboard” with your first tackle box.

What’s Cookin’ in the Ozarks?

Chocolate Lasagna 30-40 Oreos (1 large package) 6 Tbsp. melted butter 8 oz. cream cheese 1/4 cup sugar 1 cup cool whip 1 large pkg. chocolate instant pudding 3-1/4 cups milk Cool whip Oreo crumbles or 1-1/2 cups chocolate chips Crumble oreos and mix with melted butter.

Pat in bottom of a 9x13 pan.

Mix 8 oz. cream cheese, 1/4 cups sugar, and 1 cup cool whip. Mix well and spread over cookie crumbs.

Mix 1 large package of instant pudding with milk. Spread over cream cheese mixture.

Cover with cool whip. Add crumbles or chocolate chips.

Refrigerate until serving.

ACNA’s June Artist of the Month: Rosa Gallardo

T

he Arts Center of North Arkansas’s June Artist of the Month is artist Rosa Gallardo. Rosa has a special predilection for oil painting but has also done some acrylics, many murals, and a few art restoration projects. At present, she has branched into the digital world after having been commissioned to do the illustrations for a children’s book.

Emigrating to the United States in 1994, Rosa was born in 1964 in La Chona, a small village in the middle of Mexico.

Many in Rosa’s family detected that as early as age five, she displayed a special inclination and ability to draw and paint.

Since age twelve, she has been primarily self-taught but has been blessed by several talented people who have influenced her creativity in some amazing ways.

From a young age, Rosa has seen herself as a portrait artist.

She loves to draw and paint faces. She also enjoys painting religious art. Her favorite creations are a portrait of Miles Davis and, from her personal collection,Jesus Camino Verdad y Vida.

More than a hobby, painting always was and will be a fresh spiritual enjoyment for Rosa. Before it became her second parttime work, she did some portraits from her home or a mural in a restaurant or in a church. After a long work day, completing her art projects sometimes extended into the early morning hours.

One night when she was working on an art decoration inside a church, the priest went to bed after promising to arise to open the fence gate when she was finished. At around three in the morning, she called him about ten times, but he never answered. She was totally exhausted, and the night was cold and breezy. Walking around the building, she searched for a low area where she could jump across the fence. Finally, leaping from a flower bed, she tried to use the iron decorations on the fence as steps to reach the top. Unfortunately, at that exact moment, the lights from a car scattered light along the street.

Scared of being mistaken for a thief, Rosa hid. She finally made it to the other side of the fence, breathed a deep sigh of relief, and drove home, arriving there just shy of five a.m.

Life for Rosa is completely different today. Thanks to her Creator and her husband, she now has the privilege of working as a fulltime artist. Her husband is her most enthusiastic and unconditional supporter. Under his influence, she has learned to love jazz and become familiar with jazz musicians.

To summarize her artistic experience, Rosa states, “Every artist will agree with me that a simple brush and some paint can be equivalent to a pair of powerful wings for the soul and

the spirit. All I can say is I was given the ability to understand color, and the awesome blessing that color understands me . . . . Doing art has been a challenge many times but an incredible journey.”

Butler Children’ Children’s’s Park Children launches splash pad The first phase of West Plain’s plan to improve Butler Children’s Park is officially open a splash pad.

Free to the public, the splash pad is music themed with the base painted like a xylophone as well as numerous instruments that spray water. Mallory Snodgrass, Public Relations Director and City Clerk of West Plains stated it is perfect for children of all ages to run around and

Hometown Strong is a way for GTS as therapists and member of community to give back to the communities that we love and live in.

Each month employees of GTS donates a portion of their paycheck and GTS rounds that amount up to make a donation to a local charity. Each staff member that donates to this fund is entered into a drawing and once per month we draw a staff member name.

Corinne Murphy, PTA chose Serenity, Inc of Mt. Home to receive the $1000.00 donation.

Our goal at Serenity Inc. is to help survivors of domestic violence heal and regain their personal strength and power. Since 1988, we have been bringing domestic peace to the families of Baxter and Marion Counties, in addition to the surrounding counties of North Central Arkansas by providing emergency shelter and advocacy services.

Since 2014, we are one out of very few shelters that allows pets.

Today, Serenity employs 12 professionals and a dedicated group of over 40 volunteers who provide emergency shelter services, assistance with protection orders, and advocacy toward independence (housing, education, employment and healthcare), support group programs, and client transportation. Serenity operates two resale stores, offering clients goods free of charge and utilizing general sales income to support operations. Serenity’s Safe Shelter is located in Mountain Home and services both Baxter and Marion counties.

Free to the public, the splash pad is the just the beginning of what is planned for the expansion of the park. If approved for a Land, Water and Conservation (LWCF) grant, an all-inclusive playground will be featured in the middle of the park where children of all abilities may play alongside one another stated Snodgrass. Workout stations and a new walking trail will also be added.

“The expansion of this park in particular in the middle of town is great for people coming to town for baseball, soccer, or other sporting tournaments during the year. It gives families the opportunity to stop by, let children run off some energy, while parents can sit back and relax,” said Snodgrass.

15th Annual Balloon Glow presented by Ozark Chevrolet

The 15th Annual Balloon Glow presented by Ozark Chevrolet is highly dependent on weather conditions. If there are high wind speeds or rain in the area, it is possible the balloon pilots will decide not to inflate. This decision will be made minutes prior to the scheduled event. Updates will be given on their Facebook event page as they become available. Watching the balloon glow is free, however there are fees associated with the festival.

The 15th Annual Balloon Glow presented by Ozark Chevrolet is located inside the grounds of the Sertoma Duck Race Festival located at Finley River Park in downtown Ozark.

Schedule 5 p.m. Festival and parking begin, grounds open. Due to the number of attendees in previous years, we recommend arriving early.

This is a night-time balloon glow exhibit and not a launch; hot-air balloons do not launch into the air when it is dark.
