ow in its eighth year, the CTR Rodeo continues to be a huge draw for Chisholm Trail Roundup visitors. The Lockhart Chamber, along with dozens of rodeo sponsors, is proud to partner with the Diamond Cross Rodeo Company to bring a full-scale, threenight rodeo to Lockhart. The rodeo is hosted in connection with the rest of the CTR events at Lockhart City Park, and ﬁnal preparations for the arena are underway this week. The rodeo arena will overlook the pond and parking area, in the old softball ﬁeld near the

pavilion on the hill at Lockhart City Park. The week kicks off on Wednesday, June 9 with the $6 cowboy chuckwagon breakfast from 6:30-9 a.m. on the Caldwell County Courthouse lawn. Lockhart City Park opens from 5 p.m.-midnight June 10-12 as the rodeo and carnival events get underway. Thursday, June 10 will have a different feel than previous CTR opening Thursdays. The kickoff party has been replaced by a sponsor appreciation meal hosted by Steele Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in the brandnew “watering hole,” which has replaced the VIP tent. Sponsors will get

access to the watering hole throughout the event, and the public may purchase day-passes to it at $10 per day. Access grants you the ability to sit in the shade and buy beer at a reduced cost from what you would pay at the beer tent. Children are welcome in the tent until 9 p.m. each day. The rodeo itself also kicks off on June 10 with the Rough Stock Rodeo (bull riding, saddle bronc and bareback riding) and live music from Mario Flores and the Soda Creek Band, who will take the stage at 9:30. The Chisholm Trail BBQ Cookoff will unofficially get underway Friday night when the

Wristbands are being presold for $15 for all three nights. If tickets are purchased at the gate, they’re $15 per night per person. Wristbands may be purchased through the little miss and queen candidates as well as at the Chamber office. Prior to each night’s rodeo, a “Stick Horse Parade” will take place, inviting children of all ages to take a turn in the rodeo arena on stick horses. Proceeds from sales of stick horses will benefit the Gaslight-Baker Theatre’s summer reading program. It’s not just the rodeo competitors who are in it to win it at Chisholm Trail Roundup. CTR’s Saturday slate of activities also includes the Barbecue Capital of Texas Championship cookoﬀ. Cooks set up shop at city park, with many of them lending a personal touch to their sites, with some regulars even setting up pop-up bars. Prizes will be awarded in brisket, pork ribs and chicken, as well as in beans and chili, with the winners receiving their prizes late Saturday afternoon. See the full judging schedule in our Schedule of Events, pages 4-5.

No saddles required T he presence of colorful hobbyhorses appears to be one Chisholm Trail Roundup tradition that is sticking around. The horses are the invention of longtime rodeo supporter Linda Haden, who used to be an avid competitor as a kid, along with her husband, Caldwell County Judge Hoppy Haden. Haden’s stick horses have been a big hit with the kids since she ﬁrst began selling them ahead of the 2016 CTR event. Now in its fourth year, the tradition continues at the June 10-12 rodeo, with the $15 horses for sale at Printing Solutions, Wendy R Gifts and at the rodeo arena. Each year, all proceeds from hobbyhorse sales support a diﬀerent local cause. This year, the stick horses will create a stable source of funding for the Gas-

light-Baker Theatre’s summer program. “I try to pick a different charity every year,” Haden said. The horses’ popularity was a bit of a surprise to Haden, who donated the proceeds to Caldwell County flood relief the first year. “It took off all on its own,” she said. “A Blanco County donor matched the money we raised that first year, and so the $4,000 we made really became $8,000.” Haden made all of the horses by hand herself the first two years, but beginning in 2018 she got some help from Chase Lore at Capital Farm Credit. Kids who find themselves in possession of one of the unique toys get an opportunity to horse around at the Chisholm Trail Roundup. Prior to the last day’s events, children get to participate in the hobbyhorse race. Beginning in 2019, the hobbyhorses began to include unicorns. But horn or not, one thing remains consistent. “Every horse is unique,” Haden said. “You won’t find any two that are alike.”

Giovannie & The Hired Guns take spotlight Giovannie & The Hired Guns is this year’s featured musical act at Chisholm Trail Roundup & Rodeo, taking the stage at Lockhart City Park Saturday night. This year’s headliner will take the stage after Carson Jeﬀery, who goes on at 9:30 p.m. In 2015, when Giovannie Yanez decided to put a band together, he wanted to form a band of brothers who could put on a high energy show and deliver a sound that the Texas scene had never seen before. Six years later, Giovannie and the Hired Guns have done just that. The group

out of Stephenville has made a name for themselves in the Texas music scene, where they’re known for playing thrilling shows that will always keep you on your toes. At a very early age Carson discovered artists such as Cross Canadian Ragweed, Ryan Bingham, and Chris Knight. He grew up in the ranching and western way of life, spending a lot of time at his family’s ranch in Dryden, Texas, as well as his hometown of Cat Spring, Texas. Most every weekend was spent going down the highway to another rodeo to another town. With the highway as his guide, he picked up a guitar and started writing songs in his high school years. It wasn’t until college that he began to play acoustic shows and realized that people actually listened to his songs. In the summer of 2019, Carson recorded his debut album “Muchos Sonidos,”and formed a band to start trying to make his mark in the Texas Music Scene.

Some of the rodeo’s biggest stars aren’t even tall enough to ride the biggest rides at the carnival. Children on each night of the rodeo will be invited to participate in the time-honored tradition of Mutton Bustin’, with all safety gear being provided by Diamond Cross. Two champions are crowned each night. Mutton busters should between 4-8 years by June 10, 2020, and weigh less than 60 pounds, and registration is available online at www.chisholmtrailroundup.com. At this time, all Mutton Bustin’ slots are full, but you can sign your child up to join the alternates list. Please note, joining the alternates list does not guarantee a ride. Everyone loves a parade While Lockhart City Park is your nighttime destination during CTR, downtown Lockhart is the place to be on Saturday morning. At 9:30 a.m. the floats will start rolling down the street as numerous businesses, organizations and other groups show off their creative sides during the Chisholm Trail Roundup parade, a long-standing tradition. Joining the float fun will be a number of past Lockhart High School graduating classes celebrating their 20th, 25th, 30th, 35th, 40th, 45th and 50th anniversaries.

sical entertainment, great food, fun events, a spectacular parade, unique exhibitors, and a large midway. In addition you can vie for a world record in the World Championship Seed Spitting contest, or take home a trophy in the melon eating event. The Thump got its start in 1954 when community leaders wanted a venue to honor the local agricultural producers, namely tomatoes and watermelons at that time, and went to the Elementary school with a contest to name the event. The Watermelon Thump came out as the winner and folks have been thumping in Luling ever since. Now 68 years later the Thump has transformed into one of the most entertaining small town festivals in the great State of Texas.
