WHERE IT ALL BEGAN!

Renovations to a building dedicated to the memory of the world’s most famous fried chicken and its creator began in November 2019.

The Sanders Café in Corbin is the birthplace of KFC’s Original Recipe, which was created by Colonel Harland Sanders more than 75 years ago.

Sanders moved to Corbin in 1930 after spending his earlier years working as a farm hand, streetcar conductor, steamboat ferry operator, railroad fireman, secretary, insurance salesman, tire salesman and furniture store owner.

Starting as a lunchroom in the back of Sanders original service station, the restaurant was eventually expanded and Sanders built the Sanders Café which seated 142 customers.

The café was destroyed by fire in 1939, but was eventually rebuilt to include both a restaurant and a motel.

Sanders owned and operated the restaurant and motel from 1940 to 1956.

KFC franchisees Linda and John R. Neal purchased the Corbin KFC in 1973, and reopened the location as the Harland Sanders Café and Museum on Sept. 9, 1990, which would have been the Colonel’s 100th birthday.

The restaurant underwent renovations prior to the reopening in 1990.

The restaurant is still owned and operated by JRN, Inc., which has its headquarters in Columbia, Tennessee.

After John R. Neal died, his sons became second-generation franchisees.

The renovations completed under the sons’ tenure as franchisees include an herb and spice room, a walkthrough model of Sanders Café’s original kitchen and a hotel room, several photo opportunities, and various displays of antique and/or unique merchandise.

“The Neals have been incredible partners and their commitment to maintaining the Harland Sanders Café and Museum in Corbin as a historical landmark is unwavering,” said Brian Cahoe, chief development officer, KFC U.S. “This renovation will give visitors from all over the world an incredible KFC experience, while preserving the historic integrity of the location. We are grateful to the Neals for their vision and for their dedication to preserving the place where it all began.”

The Sanders Café and Museum is located at the intersection of US 25W and Ky 830.

DR. THOMAS WALKER STATE HISTORIC SITE — Dr. Thomas Walker State Historic Site is named after the first frontiersman in Kentucky. Near the river, which he named the Cumberland, Dr. Walker built the first cabin in Kentucky, a replica of which stands on the site today. The cabin and surrounding grounds can be toured year-round. The park includes a miniature golf course, a basketball court, and yearround picnicking and playground.

INDIAN MOUNTAIN STATE PARK — Indian Mountain State Park is a 200-acre park located in Campbell County, Tennessee, near Jellico. There are 47 sites with paved pads to serve both tent and RV campers. All sites feature water and electric.

CUMBERLAND FALLS STATE RESORT PARK Known as the “Niagara of the South,” the waterfall forms a 125-foot-wide curtain that plunges seven stories into a boulder-strewn gorge, and is dramatic day or night.

The mist of Cumberland Falls creates the magic of the Moonbow, a unique phenomena which is only visible on a clear night during a full moon.

The park features a variety of other recreational activities that range from a relaxing dip to the excitement of rafting and horseback riding.
